The Ultimate Guide to Stevia Sugar and Other Zero-Calorie Natural Sweeteners
Tumblr media
The health-conscious world today has brought about a tremendous rush for zero-calorie sweeteners. Individuals seek alternatives to white sugar due to fear of weight gain, diabetes, and overall health problems. Nonetheless, there is a general perception that all sugar substitutes are artificial. Though synthetic sweeteners like aspartame and saccharin have controlled the market for decades, there are natural options that have been eaten for centuries in most cultures of the world.
Among these, Stevia sugar is very common as one of the most researched and utilized natural sweeteners. Prepared from Stevia leaves, it gives sweetness without the harmful health effects of refined sugar. But Stevia is not alone. Other plant sweeteners such as monk fruit, glycyrrhizin found in licorice root, and miraculin in miracle fruit also bring sweetness without additional calories.
Understanding these sweeteners, their benefits, and potential drawbacks is central to making a smart decision on reducing sugar intake without sacrificing the level of sweetness one wants in food and beverages.
Origins and Benefits of Stevia Sugar
Stevia sugar or natural Stevia is a Stevia rebaudiana plant leaf-derived product that has originated in South America. Stevia leaves have been used for centuries by Paraguayans and Brazilians for sweetening traditional medicinal brews and teas. The natural sweetness of the plant results from its unique compounds called steviol glycosides, which are responsible for its ability to provide intense sweetness without calories.
The most significant benefit of Stevia sugar is that it has zero glycemic index, so it does not cause a blood sugar peak. Hence, it is the best choice for those who have diabetes or who are under a weight control diet. Secondly, scientific research suggests that Stevia can be helpful in a number of ways, such as regulating blood glucose levels, reducing inflammation, and a healthy heart.
Unlike white sugar, associated with obesity, tooth rot, and metabolic illness, Stevia does not cause these negative health effects. Stevia has been approved for use as a safe substitute for sugar by regulatory bodies such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), further indicating that Stevia is an effective as well as safe sweetener.
Types of Stevia and Its Useful Applications
Stevia is found in different forms, each of which is most convenient for different methods of culinary preparation. Dried leaves of stevia are the most natural form, and they can either be infused in hot water or ground to powder for cooking and baking purposes. The commercial products of Stevia are, however, most commonly found in liquid, powdered, or granule forms.
Individuals primarily utilize stevia powder as a sugar alternative in baked goods, but they need to decrease the quantity because stevia is sweeter than sugar. Liquid Stevia drops can be used to sweeten beverages such as coffee, tea, and smoothies. Other Stevia items are blended with other sugar alcohols, such as erythritol, to create a texture and taste similar to white sugar.
While Stevia is a good sugar alternative, there is a slight aftertaste experienced by some individuals, which can vary depending on the brand and processing. To offset this, high-quality Stevia extracts with a high-purity level of steviol glycosides are suggested.
Other Zero-Calorie Natural Sweeteners
Tumblr media
Whereas Stevia is among the most popular sugar substitutes, there are several other natural sweeteners with similar advantages. Various cultures have traditionally used these, and they are gaining popularity in contemporary health-oriented diets.
Monk Fruit (Luo Han Guo)
Monk fruit, or Luo Han Guo, is a sweetener made from a small Chinese melon. It has been used by Chinese herbalists for millennia as a treatment for various ailments, from sore throats to digestive problems. The fruit gets its sweetness from compounds known as mogrosides, which are sweeter than sugar but have no calories.
Similar to Stevia, monk fruit is also a zero-calorie sweetener, hence the ideal choice for individuals who want to control their blood sugar. The heat stability characteristic of monk fruit implies that the sweetness is retained even when cooking and baking with it. Unlike certain artificial sweeteners, monk fruit does not leave a bitter aftertaste, hence its popularity among many people who seek a less artificial version of sugar.
Glycyrrhizin (Licorice Root Sweetener)
Glycyrrhizin is a sweetener that is naturally derived from the licorice root plant. It is a historic element of traditional herbal medications that is accompanied by strong sweetness and medicinal value. It is commonly used in herbal tea, herbal candies, and sore throat and cough medicine syrups.
Although glycyrrhizin is calorie-free, excessive intake is not good, especially in the management of blood pressure. High doses of glycyrrhizin have been reported to cause sodium retention and decreased potassium levels, thus resulting in hypertension. Therefore, patients with hypertension or cardiovascular disease should take licorice-based sweeteners in moderation.
Miraculin (Sweetener Fruit Miracle)
Miraculin is a new natural sweetener of West African miracle fruit. Unlike other sweeteners, miraculin does not directly provide sweetness but distorts perception. When consumed, miraculin is absorbed by the taste receptors on the tongue and, for a limited period, alters sour flavors into sweet flavors. Because of this incredible property, businesses have promoted miraculin as a novelty sweetener as opposed to a traditional sugar substitute. Scientists have also researched its potential to enable chemotherapy patients to overcome the taste abnormalities brought about by their treatment. Although not as well-known as Stevia or monk fruit, miraculin is an intriguing and natural way of experiencing sweetness without calories.
Why Natural Sweeteners Are Preferable to Artificial Ones
Tumblr media
For many decades, human beings have been utilizing artificial sweeteners like aspartame, saccharin, and sucralose as alternatives to sugar. Consumers are concerned that the sweeteners create unwanted health effects such as metabolic and gastrointestinal diseases. As an alternative solution, natural sweeteners ensure a chemical-free source of sweetness with no adverse effects on human health.
Different cultures have long employed natural sweeteners like stevia, monk fruit, glycyrrhizin, and miraculin for centuries because these sweeteners are plant-based. They do not cause weight gain, tooth decay, or insulin resistance, thereby offering a healthier option for those who are willing to cut down on sugar.
Choosing the right sugar alternative
The greatest natural sweetener is a personal choice and nutritional consideration. Stevia and monk fruit are great all-purpose sweeteners, complementing drinks, baking, and cooking. Herbal medicine and traditional confectionery especially appreciate glycyrrhizin, but individuals mainly utilize miraculin for its special property of changing taste.
For those looking to transition from white sugar, testing several natural sweeteners will enable them to find the best option for their distinct taste buds and health needs. It is also smart to use high-quality, minimally processed sweeteners to get the greatest flavor and nutritional value.
Conclusion
The growing awareness of the ill effects of sugar intake has been pushing individuals towards natural and healthier alternatives. Stevia sugar is one highly sought and well-studied natural sweetener that exists, offering the same sweetness for zero calories. Besides Stevia, the existence of monk fruit, glycyrrhizin, and miraculin means, one has more varied options with, to use less sugar for that natural sweetness.
By taking smart choices and incorporating natural sweeteners into daily lives, individuals can make a giant stride towards better health, reduced calorie consumption, and overall better well-being

Pumpkin Spice Black tea: Which one is best?
In my personal opinion Bigelow Pumpkin Spice Tea is better than Celestial Seasonings Sweet Harvest Pumpkin Tea.
Here are the differences.
Bigelow Pumpkin Spice tea: Black tea, natural pumpkin flavors with other natural flavors. Soy Lecithin (soy additive), Cinnamon, licorice root, clove, ginger, and dried pumpkin flakes.
Tumblr media
Celestial Seasonings Sweet Harvest Pumpkin Tea: Black Tea, Cinnamon, Ginger, Roasted Chicory, Natural Pumpkin Flavor with Other Natural Flavors, Luo Han Guo, Cloves, Nutmeg, Stevia Extract, and Pumpkin.
Tumblr media
The ingredients are very similar except Bigelow has no Luo Han Guo (Chinese medicinal herb that is supposed to be good for breathing and relieves coughs). And has no Roasted Chicory or Stevia. And Celestial seasoning has no soy as an additive.
You would think this would make Celestial Seasonings the better of the two but the recipe for the Celestial seasonings one has been changed over the years. It didn't used to have the Luo Han Guo or Stevia. And I found the roasted chicory gave it a bitter after-taste that sugar couldn't hide.
I can't help but feel they started to add the stevia to hide that bitterness.
In general I just stick with the Bigelow version, it's just simple pumpkin spice and frankly I think they put more dried pumpkin in the Bigelow version.
If you can't get a hold of either and want a tea that is Pumpkin spice-like, Chai comes close.
An interesting bit of history. Celestial seasonings was founded by Neo Pagan (possibly Wiccan) hippies in 1969 who sold herbal tea blends for medical purposes such as sleep aid (Sleepy Time tea being their biggest seller), and digestion aid (Mint Magic and Peppermint). In 1972 they officially became America's first company to make and sell herbal tea blends. (Strange that no one sold blended herbal teas in the US until 1972...)
I think the company is currently owned by Kraft foods. Edit: I forgot to mention that Bigelow has Licorice Root, which (in celestial seasonings) can ruin a flavor as they use it as a flavor filler, but thankfully Bigelow doesn't seem to use too much and appear to just be using it as a mild sweetener.

Round 1: Blackcurrant Date Cakes
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pay no mind to Star Anise. She’s a ho.
Sugar free chocolate cake experiment - a shameless amalgamation of multitudes of recipes and ingredients. Good base to begin, greater liberties shall be taken in their next permutation. I cannot believe how much sodding sugar people use in their desserts, no wonder there’s a meth market boom.
To adjust density & texture in future, can either vary 1) Baking soda amount, 2) Liquid ingredient doses, or 3) Baking time.
Wet - Largest bowl
2 eggs; 1.5 tsp vanilla essence; 3/8 cup coconut oil. Mix.
Measure in same cup 1/4 cup molasses; 1/4 cup full fat milk; 1/4 cup Luo Han Guo Tea (No Sugar). Mix, add to egg mixture then whisk.
Don’t expect anything particularly fluffy, because it is a lot of liquid with no white sugar for the egg froth to build upon.
Dry
1 cup plain flour; 1/2 cup Hershey’s 100% cocoa powder; 1 tbsp instant coffee; pinch salt;
Used 1/2 tsp baking soda because too little of this the first time is usually a more edible mistake than too much of it. The cakelettes domed, and were a weensy bit dense when eaten cold. Either will try a self-raising flour next time or attempt with more tea/jam/dates or reduce baking soda proportion.
Spices were cinnamon (1tbsp), cloves (1/2 tsp), star anise (1/4 tsp). The cinnamon can’t really break past the cocoa, so your choice to use. Judge amounts based on your flavour profile preference. ‘Similar’ recipes give a teaspoon of cinnamon and 1/4 of cloves but unless you have fresh, warm spices, go a bit higher.
Add dry to wet. Mix.
(It becomes so shiny!)
Flavour sweets
3-5 tablespoons sugar free blackcurrant jam.
1/2 cup date paste. The dates used had been annihilated prior, and it’s a consistency similar to honey. If using blended dry dates, certainly up the liquid ingredients for the same volume.
Add to the combined wet and dry, final mix. Have a taste and judge which sweetener-ingredient you might like more of, or to just keep them as low-grade aspects of semi-sweet chocolate cakelettes.
Baking
160 C, 12 butter-lined tart cases, 21-24 minutes for outer and inner circle of cakes respectively.
Possibly less than 19 minutes would be fine as a baking time. At this point the outer circle domes began to exhibit surface fractures.
As they cool, they helpfully peel their little bodies away from the sides.

SEE-HUM (sea clams) CKT // Monday means..that @uncleeddieperth is back open. Only Mondays to Wednesdays to help you chase the Monday blues away. Pictured are their special Char Kuay Teow with sea clams (aud18.90); Mee Goreng (aud13.90) and Herbal tea of the day: Luo Han Guo (aud4.50). Normal CKT is priced at aud13.90. Thanks Eddie for letting us try the sea clams! 🥰 It’s rare to find CKT with sea clams in Perth and this might be a first. Personally found the clams on this visit a bit too raw for my liking (they were good on another visit when my partner visited) and I prefer the normal CKT without sea clams. Their Mee Goreng is a winner always. You guys should know how much I love this place by the amount of times I’ve visited since they’ve opened. 😋🤤 #UncleEddie #UncleEddiePerth #VictoriaPark #Malaysian #PerthMalaysian #CharKueyTeow #SeeHum #SeaClam #MeeGoreng #LuoHanGuo #PerthFoodReview #PFR_UncleEddie (at Uncle Eddie Perth) https://www.instagram.com/p/CU4w7F3BJy6/?utm_medium=tumblr

Why Monk Fruit Sweetener is the Best Zero-Calorie Sweetener for Your Diet
Tumblr media
In today’s health-conscious world, reducing sugar intake is a top priority for many. Whether you’re following a low-carb, keto, or diabetic-friendly diet, finding a natural, zero-calorie sweetener that doesn’t compromise on taste can be a challenge. Lakanto Monk Fruit Sweetener, available at Pluugin Store, is a top choice for those looking for a healthier sugar alternative. Derived from the monk fruit, this sweetener provides a natural, delicious, and guilt-free way to satisfy your sweet tooth. Let’s explore why it stands out among other zero-calorie sweeteners.
What is Monk Fruit Sweetener?
Monk fruit sweetener is extracted from the monk fruit (Luo Han Guo), a small green melon native to Southeast Asia. The fruit contains natural compounds called mogrosides, which are responsible for its intense sweetness—nearly 200 times sweeter than sugar. Unlike artificial sweeteners, monk fruit sweetener is completely natural, free from harmful chemicals, and does not spike blood sugar levels.
Benefits of Lakanto Monk Fruit Sweetener
1. Zero Calories, Zero Guilt
One of the primary reasons people turn to monk fruit sweetener is its zero-calorie content. Whether you are managing your weight or looking to cut unnecessary sugars, Lakanto Monk Fruit Sweetener is an excellent choice that allows you to enjoy sweetness without added calories.
2. Blood Sugar Friendly
Unlike traditional sugar, monk fruit sweetener does not cause spikes in blood sugar levels. This makes it an ideal option for individuals with diabetes or insulin resistance. Lakanto’s formula ensures that you can indulge in sweetness without worrying about glucose fluctuations.
3. Keto and Low-Carb Approved
If you follow a ketogenic or low-carb diet, cutting down on sugar is essential for maintaining ketosis. Lakanto Monk Fruit Sweetener is a popular choice among keto enthusiasts as it contains no net carbs, making it perfect for sugar-free baking and cooking.
4. No Aftertaste
Many artificial sweeteners leave an unpleasant bitter or metallic aftertaste. Monk fruit sweetener, however, has a naturally clean and pleasant sweetness that closely resembles sugar, making it a great alternative for tea, coffee, smoothies, and baked goods.
5. Rich in Antioxidants
Monk fruit contains powerful antioxidants known as mogrosides, which have anti-inflammatory properties and may contribute to overall well-being. Unlike other sweeteners that offer no nutritional benefits, Lakanto Monk Fruit Sweetener provides both sweetness and health-boosting compounds.
How to Use Lakanto Monk Fruit Sweetener
One of the best things about Lakanto Monk Fruit Sweetener is its versatility. It can be used in various ways, including:
Baking: Use it as a one-to-one sugar substitute in cakes, cookies, and muffins.
Beverages: Stir it into coffee, tea, smoothies, or lemonade.
Cooking: Use it in sauces, dressings, and marinades for a touch of natural sweetness.
Desserts: Create sugar-free treats like puddings, yogurts, and ice creams without compromising on taste.

Your sweet tooth is sabotaging your health and fitness goals? Everyone knows not to use artificial sweetners now, so what are you to do? SOLUTION: Monk Fruit Powder A natural 0 calorie sugar alternative, derived from real monk fruit. Also known as Luo Han Guo, monk fruit is a small melon native to southeast Asia. The fruit is very sweet, due primarily to naturally-occurring antioxidants known as mogrosides which give a cleaner and more intense sweetness. Only a small amount is needed to sweeten food or drinks. Since luo han guo is very potent, you don’t need to use much. Just a teaspoon of monk powder provides the same amount of sweetness as one cup of sugar. The monk fruit packets sold in supermarkets often contain binding agents and fillers that dilute the product. That’s why it’s important to look for 80% pure extract monk fruit powder. 80% mogrosides, the main chemical component that gives the powder sweetness, but is made with 100% Luo Han Guo Fruit and no other carriers. Monk fruit powder is 200-250 times the sweetness of table sugar so a little goes a long way! This all-natural sweetener has a caramelized toffee fruit flavor, which makes it the perfect substitute for honey. Plus, there’s no bitter aftertaste. Sweeten your coffee, tea, or other beverages with 1/2 a teaspoon of monk fruit sweetener. It also works as an alternative to sugar or maple syrup in oatmeal, yogurt, and other foods. Feel free to experiment with the quantity to achieve the desired sweetness that works best for you. There is no negative impact to having more if you like! AVOID blends - often blended with sugar alcohols in some commercial brands that often cause gastrointestinal problems and inflammation (Ex. Erythritol) (at Quebecor Media) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9EnWDEnSfs/?igshid=1082areq9n3pu
