Lunarethe is the kingdom of the moon, positioned northwest from Solaralia. They mainly focus on the deity Lunese when it comes to worship and values they practice.

A lot of their staple items are natural resources that can be featured in magical rituals with lunar properties, those things being main exports since they only grow on Lunarethe.

Most of their culture revolves around astrology and the night. Moon and stars being main motifs since they hold importance.

⋆☀︎｡ Solaralia

Solaralia is the kingdom of the sun, Southeast of Lunarethe and West of Verdaryn. They worship the deity Solarin, though a portion of the population includes fire spirits in their worship as well.

Much of their staple items are weaponry and technology, including solar based power sources. Main exports due to other kingdoms not being as technologically advanced or as large.

Most of their culture revolves around the day and the sun itself, but it should be noted that since Solaralia merged with another kingdom in past centuries, it’s also a mix of the two in some villages. Main motifs are flames and suns.

Verdaryn is the kingdom of forests and earth, located east of Solaralia, south of Galeistrin, and north of Evarium. Their worship focuses primarily on Natulia and earth spirits, having the largest population of Beastfolk out of the kingdoms.

Staple items are resources often used in construction, as well as crops due to their rich soil and plentiful forests. Main exports since other kingdoms usually have different terrain that doesn’t allow for different flora.

Most of their culture revolves around the forests and the creatures that roam within it, main motifs being woodland creatures and trees.

༘⋆༄.°⋆ Galeistrin

Galeistrin is the kingdom of wind, set north of Verdaryn. Their worship primarily focuses on Airen and the wind spirits.

Their staple items are instruments and crafts (art, jewelry, etc.) These are their main exports as well, since their kingdom holds many different craftsmen.

Most of their culture revolves around the sky and wind, main motifs being clouds and gust symbols.

ଳ⋆｡˚ Evarium

Evarium is the kingdom of the sea, south of Verdaryn and east of Solaralia. Their worship focuses on Mariner and water spirits.

Their staples items aquatic resources and seafood, seafood products being the main exports of the two. Main exports since Evarium is the only kingdom with large masses of edible fish close to its shores.

Most of their culture revolves around water and the sea, as well as the sea life. Their main motifs are waves and droplets.

IMBEKO:

Koi's planet, Imbeko is a big cat-dominant planet, with a small population of unusual cat-like creatures like Fossa.

There are three: Bhekithemba (knowledge), Bhekizizwe (protection), and Bhekumbuso (improvement). Koi comes from Bhekumbuso (improvement), which is the only province within the planet that has full-blooded royalty.

Bhekithemba - Scholars + Scientists. They were responsible for assisting inventors from Bhekumbuso with the forcefields that protect Imbeko as a whole. There are more scientists than scholars (73%-48%). Scientists request visitors of Imbeko and their province to stay out of contact from the laboratories, they are very stingy of their work.

Bhekizizwe - Guards. They are trained to not only keep watch over forcefield connections and sites within each province but to protect their own provinces. Guards from Bhekizizwe are trained from 19 up to 32, and are under one of Koi's older brothers (FangNight, or Fang for short).

Bhekumbuso - Inventors + Royal Family. Not only is this province the capital of the royal family's household but is also home to planet-famous inventors. Inventors are always improving (whether bi-weekly or monthly) and trying to make Imbeko more functional and adaptable to any situation thrown. On the other end, the royal family consists of:

FUN FACTS:

- All women are able to suplex other family members, they don't rough house with the little kids, only teens and young adults.

- Courting works as if you wear a fang necklace that a suitor gives you around after the 5th date, you are seen as a taken individual and are preparing for marriage.

- Visitors of Imbeko are given a poncho with symbols of the royal family's ancestors as a way to protect the individual.

- Imbeko's royal family is close friends with Eden's royal family.

Too many people on the Red Rising subreddit spend so much time trying to come up with the most out-there theories while not managing to absorb the most straightforward, surface-level information in these books. It's like they're trying to do calculus when they never mastered addition.

Agree completely. The sheer amount of conversations I’ve seen where people fail to understand the most basic RR facts astounds me.

The most obvious one we’ve talked about before: Lyria being pregnant. Makes me laugh. People are still debating it. What the actual fuck.

I also saw a post where people were arguing over whether Tactus would’ve supported Darrow after learning he was Red. Like, hon… PB flat–out said so.

Another arguing over the etymology of Darrow’s name, as if Reds aren’t blatantly and canonically Irish–coded. Endless ones fruitlessly debating Virginia’s mysterious source; it’s admittedly unknown, but Abom seems the obvious candidate.

Several over what strain of the Eidmi would affect Darrow, Pax, and Sevro, as if they aren’t canonically Gold to their core. Saw another discussing when Lyria was going to get a proper antagonist; they had to be reminded that Harmony and the Red Hand… existed? Another asked what happened to the Vox Populi, a Lunese political faction, on Mars, and if Mars had become an autocracy.

Do these people read with their eyes closed?

But ones that ask questions directly answered by the book bother me most. Whether Matteo/Quicksilver actually removed the parasite from Lyria, whether Lysander would’ve killed Cassius regardless, whether anyone will know Cassius killed Fear, what Lysander’s Evil Plan entails, etc.

Maybe… read the book? Lysander’s PoV at the end of LB is admittedly vaguer than necessary, but it’s not that ambiguous. Some things are pretty fucking clear.

Universe: Red Rising Series by Pierce Brown

Pairing: Darrow O'Lykos/Virginia au Augustus

Setting: Caragmore, Apollonia, Mars - a bit of a continuation of The Sea chapter from Golden Son

Sleeping felt like inviting a looming danger to serve up justice for the innocent blood I have spillt. It never felt safe to sleep in a bed, even after the Institute. But it was almost strange that I could be so at peace with Darrow next to me. It feels as though it is the safest here, always has been, always will be. I don't question it anymore, not after all we have been through. No one I know and love is innocent, this world does not allow it. But I wish to build a better one, together.

I raise my head from the nook of his shoulder to take a better look at his upper body. He's a patchwork of skin, bits of pink resSkin still at work healing him. They will be done soon, but I will never get used to the feeling of dread that crushed my heart when I saw him on that table.

He used to have a scar on his belly from the Institute, the lack of it is a bit staggering. It probably opened again and the Carvers used resSkin to stop the haemorrhage faster. It has healed with no scarring, as it usually does. Carvers know not to erase scars on the Peerless, unless there is no other choice. Between that and an open cord surgery, they made the best choice.

I trace the shape of the scar where it was suppossed to be and wonder if Darrow will dislike the lack of it. He never minded the scars, especially when I used to pepper kisses on them. There are plenty others on his arms and legs, from the Institute, from trainning.

His face bears the Peerless Scar my father made with his own razor during the winning ceremony of the Institute - it is a stark, almost oblique line under his right eye. It is lighter in colour tham his own skintone - it bled a lot back then, yet he did not even flinch, not before or during or after. He looked angry, like he hated everything happening, his own glory. He calmed down when I rejoined him after receiving my own Scar - similar to his, father liked the Martian Scar best - deep cut, not sworly, shallow and pretty like on Lunese Peerless made them.

I softly kiss the scar he gave himself at the Gala to gain my father's blessing. I have thought Darrow lost to me due to my father's influence, but I was wrong. Darrow knew all along that peaceful change is not possible, just like the Old Conquerors, we must make it our own. But unlike them, we must make it better for everyone.

' - 'Lo, Mustang!', he whispers before shifting his head to kiss my lips. I love it when he lingers a bit, as if breathing me in.

' - 'Lo, Reaper..., I manage to say before he moves on top of me and seals my mouth with his again.

His lips carve a path down my neck and stops at my collarbone to nip. He entangles his hand with mine and presses kisses to my palm, the back without touching the sigils...and down my freshly scarred arm. He frowns at it until I explain - 'It got crushed under some rubble, but it healed fast. No need to give the team of Carvers and Medici that saved you even more work.' I smirk at him, but he doesn't take my joke, he is pained as he starts kissing the little scars and lingers on the one where the bone pierced skin. They are barely there from scrapping, except the one caused by the fracture, nothing special and quite unsignigicant compared to his collection of old and new. But this behavior is extactly what defines Darrow, the way he loves.

It's intense, his love. He always gives so much love. That is when he allows himself to do so. I hope that the new world we're building, he can love as much as he can, no holds barred. But for now, I am grateful he loves me.

I bring his face to mine with my hands. I was going to say something about what I feel for him, but it feels blasphemous to word it. So I just stare in his eyes willing my feeling to unveil themselves. And they I kiss him again...

Author's note: Ok, please do not kill me, I did my best. It is wonky on the sides, but I hope the feeling got across. I was wiring Virginia kissing Darrow's scars and the changed my mind, because why not...and it ended up like this! Hope it's worth the wait!

According to Pierce Brown, Lunese Pixies pronounce Darrow as 'Dah-rrow', so by this logic, only Lunese Pixies pronounce Cassius as Casshews.

This is what I choose to believe. It’s the only way I keep my sanity. There’s no reason for the “Cash-us” pronunciation. Or, as my friend @catherdrashepard pointed out, there is also the occasional “Cash-ee-us” in the audiobook, which is somehow worse because that is so close to being right. Where does that phantom “sh” sound come from? The world may never know.

It’s so interesting that PB said this, because I’ve always imagined Octavia and Lysander with the super-posh, over-enunciated, stereotypical British royal family accent. There’s even some canon backing for this!

From Lysander’s first chapter in Iron Gold:

Born on the Palatine Hill of Luna, I have lamentably inherited the most egregiously stereotypical highLingo accents. Apparently others find it hilarious.

Or as Pytha puts it more succinctly:

“Sounds like the human encyclopedia’s got a turd up his nose.”

Definitely the type who would say “Dah-rrow.” 🙄

Different guy, but the way Lysander’s Dark Age narrator starts his chapters like “Chapter #, Ly-SAN-dah” always makes me giggle.

I wonder, has anyone ever asked PB if “Darrow” comes from Clarence Darrow? That’s always been my guess.

The Solar System in Doctor Who is crazy

If you’re a Doctor Who fan, you’re probably aware of a few intelligent species that call the Sun’s system their home.

There’s humans, of course, and Earth also has the Silurians and the Sea Devils. The Zygons are refugees on Earth. The Ice Warriors are on Mars. And the Cybermen were first shown to come from Mondas, Earth’s astrophysically-improbable twin planet.

That’s already six intelligent species who call this system home. But what if I told you that that’s barely scratching the surface?

Mercurials

Mercurials are tall, silver-skinned humanoids with pointy arms and flat, round feet. They are very much products of their time, underdeveloped peaceful creatures who manage to survive on Mercury and bear no ill will towards humans.

Mercurian Energy Beasts

The other sapient lifeforms on Mercury are the Mercurian energy beasts. As their name suggests, these creatures have quite a fearsome appearance. They are gigantic, made of lava, and have huge beard-like fronds. However, again, they are actively benevolent.

Venusians

With five arms, five legs, and twelve eyes on stalks, Venusians were masters of martial arts, and taught the Doctor a form of Aikido. They are capable of absorbing memories by eating brains. They are said to have gone extinct due to Venus’s global warming.

Wispies

These gaseous creatures are made of the Venusian atmosphere - perhaps they even are the atmosphere.

Cytherians

 Also known as Thraskins or Plinge, Cytherians look like lemurs, but they’re the size of humans and more intelligent. Cytherians were responsible for the climate change that killed the Venusians and birthed the Wispies. Unlike the Venusians, the Cytherians managed to survive the cataclysm due to their mastery of cryogenics. When humanity terraformed Venus, the Cytherians awoke and were enslaved, until the Doctor freed them.

Merpeople

Earth is home to multiple intelligent aquatic humanoids. The Third Doctor encountered the Carpanthans, who deliberately hide themselves away from terrestrial civilisations. But far more interesting are the merpeople. They prefer “merrows”, but humanity fixates on the image of the mermaid far too much for the preferred terminology to ever catch on. Merrows are the creatures of legend: half fish, half human. They can breath the air and have no difficulties talking outside of the water. A mermaid called Magda was the mother of the Time Lord known as the Doctor - he was, after all, half-human on his mother’s side.

Tuskens

Descended from pigs, Tuskens very rapidly evolved into a fully sapient species due to the intervention of the Doctor, who taught them how to speak English.

Dolphins

In the Whoniverse, dolphins are as smart as humans, and are capable of two-way communication with the help of assistive technology. They can also survive on land through the use of robotic spacesuits. Dolphins have colonised aquatic worlds throughout the Milky Way.

Sidhe

The Sidhe are multidimensional beings who resemble Tolkien’s Elves. They are responsible for most paranormal phenomena on Earth, but largely keep to themselves. Their greatest intervention in human history was fighting against the Nazis in WWII due to the threat that Nazism posed to their realm.

The Silence

Although they were originally a hostile invasion force, the Silence lived on Earth for generations. They were able to live on the planet undetected due to their antimemetic properties - they were wiped from a person’s memory as soon as they were outside their vision cone. The first Silence were genetically modified Catholic priests designed to hear confession. If we accept that white people can be Americans, we must surely accept the Silence as Earthlings?

The Forest of Cheem

At the other end of the scale, the Forest of Cheem are sentient bipedal plants. They evolved from Earth’s rainforests. They’re from Earth’s genetic stock, but they’re also aliens.

Terrae

Before the Moon became a moon, it was the planet Theia. Like the Earth Reptiles, the Terrae, who lived on Theia, were worried when they foresaw Theia colliding with the Earth. They hibernated beneath Theia’s surface, and were only disturbed when humans mined for helium on the Moon. Their corpses turn to a purple dust, which humans consumed as a recreational drug.

Lunaries

After the Reptiles made it to space, but before the humans did, the Lunese formed a colony on the Moon. They were an insectoid species who evolved on Earth and formed diplomatic relations with every nation of Europe in the late 16th century, bringing the ambassadors to the Moon, which was full of Earth life.  

Lizard Kings

What, you thought there were only sapient reptiles on Earth? No, no - Mondas has its own reptiles, both aquatic and terrestrial. The Lizard Kings were even thought to, paradoxically, have helped to bring about the Cybermen by sending an augmented ape forward in time to Mondas’s future. The Cybermen have an obsession with the Lizard Kings, but have never found any alive.

The Flood

“The Waters of Mars” introduced the Flood - a waterborne parasite that seemed to possess intelligence. It was able to operate machinery and successfully lay siege to a Mars base. It is thought that the Flood was buried in Mars’ ice by the Ice Warriors as a desperate final defence.

Cerulians

Now long extinct, the Cerulians lived on the dwarf planet Ceres between Mars and Jupiter. They had a two-caste society, divided between Masters and Scribes (slaves). Eventually, Masters trained Scribes to spend their whole lives flattering the Masters, and the Masters came to enjoy it. Neither caste noticed when Ceres was hit by an asteroid, eradicating life on Ceres.

Fendahl

History keeps repeating itself in the Solar System. Before Ceres, there was Planet 5 - a planet variously known as Minerva, Hestia, or Asteris, but usually just called Planet 5. In the early days of the Solar Sustem, this planet was home to the Star People, who created the Fendahl: a species where each individual contained thirteen separate parts with their own intelligence. Like on Ceres (and indeed Mars - the Ice Warriors were originally slaves), the Fendahl were intended to be a slave race, but they proved to have telepathic powers strong enough for them to consume the psychic energy of all non-Fendahl life on Planet 5. This caused a “rare” intervention in the outside world by the Time Lords, who feared that the Fendahl were threats to life in the universe. They were probably correct - the Fendahl were capable of making Great Old Ones like Fenric turn and run in fear. The Time Lords placed Planet 5 in a time loop, making it completely invisible and inaccessible. Some theorise that the planet broke up into the Asteroid Belt - which, of course, contains Ceres...

Europans

A race of amphibious insects evolved on Jupiter’s moon, Europa. Unfortunately, in the 20th century climate change nearly caused their extinction. Colony ships flew out to other worlds, but the only known success landed on Earth. The Third Doctor helped them form an Earth colony... but then time was rewritten, and the more cynical Seventh Doctor was sent to help UNIT instead. This unfortunately ended with UNIT killing all the Europans.

Vogans

The Vogans live on Voga, a former planet made entirely of gold. Early in their history, the Vogans were visited by a Vampire Hunter named Rassilon, and their society thus mirrors Gallifreyan society in many ways. They have grey skin, white hair, and high, domed foreheads.

Voga was of great interest to the Cybermen, who possessed a fatal weakness to gold. The Cybermen tried to blast Voga out of existence (which would not have destroyed the gold, but who said Cybermen were clever?). They only succeeded in sending Voga spiralling through space. The Vogans hid underground, and emerged when Voga settled in a stable orbit around Jupiter. I would point out that this makes Voga one of four bodies in the Solar System to dramatically change its orbit after evolving sapient life, and one of two to become a Moon of a larger planet. It also makes the Vogans at least the tenth species to go into hibernation following a calamity, most of which did it underground.

Waro

Aside from the Fendahl, the Waro were the solar species who were most hostile to humanity. Short goblin-like creatures with huge bat ears and terrible tempers, Waro were native to Neptune’s largest moon, Triton.

Siccati

Lastly, the Siccati evolve on Sedna. Never heard of Sedna? No, nor has anyone else. Sedna is a trans-Neptunian object which Gary Russell was sure would be named the Tenth Planet.

The Siccati were a race of bohemians, dedicated to art above all else. As Sedna is tiny, freezing, and has an irregular orbit, the Siccati relocated to floating cities in the atmosphere of Neptune.

The Solar System is weird. I have skimmed over some species, but there have been:

- Three instances of a species creating a slave race which leads to their destruction.

- Ten species who have hibernated (mostly underground) to escape a calamity.

- Four species who have been disturbed by humanity when hibernating underground, causing conflict between them and humans. One race, the Cytherians, were even enslaved by humanity.

- At least three different origins for the Moon (Theia colliding with Earth, Mercury’s twin planet that sent Mondas off into space/scared the Silurians, an egg).

- Four bodies being expelled from their orbits after evolving sapient life - the Moon/Theia and Mondas from within the Solar System, and Voga and Skaro (yes, that Skaro) from outside it.

- Multiple aquatic societies.

- Multiple species said to have inspired the human myth of fairies.

Earth’s solar system is weird. How weird is the rest of the universe?

Around the Three Continents | Luna

An illustrious city in the mountains of Eastern Vandelia, Luna prides itself on its proximity to their three divinities. The mountain it is built upon lifts them close to the moon and the stars, and the ocean at its base is just as sacred. The Lunese are easily distinguished by their white hair, which they believe is a gift to them for being children of the moon. They are birthed in the sea, and are returned to the tides upon death.
