The Stolen Morning Star*
January 3rd
755 PCE
The Lightbringer and the rest of Lysander's fleet leaves Phobos for the Rim.
For an explanation of how this date was calculated, see this blog's pinned post for a link to my timeline notes on AO3.
#idk what was more annoying the massacration of the star or cassius trying to correct darrow when he called it 'the morning star'#justice for the star#maybe if darrow didn't allow cassius to get away with so much constantly this fandom would call it what it is 🤔

i think an underused trope is Not Found Family: when a group of people go through something but they still don’t even like eachother
#pierce used this trope in LB#lots of friends that were just coworkers at best and then there was devro real soulmatism#<- yeah if he wanted some fou d family he should have put in more effort not dunk it in the trash and called what remained a first draft🥰

The writing sets this up early on, because as you start reading Red Rising and as Darrow mentions Eo more and more, you also go through what a somewhat typical day looks like or him in the mines. The way he talks about Eo and other women, even his own mother has a reverence to it that is not healthy but it's understandable for the world he lives in. He is a product of his own society. And as you read, you see how Darrow sees Eo and you can figure out the whys. Even after she becomes a myth, Darrow's survival guilt will stop him from seeing her flaws and humanity - he owes her, he must see her dream come true, etc.
Darrow does love Eo for selfish reasons and the idea he made in his own head about how the idyllic life would be for him - the life Dale abandoned and scarred Darrow in the process because he had to see the pieces left behind Dale's death.
But Eo loves Darrow the same exact way, selfishly, although her society influences her differently than it does Darrow. Eo loves Darrow for what he could be. She chose him as her husband for his potential for the cause she always cared about. She tries to coax him into the role, she is very patient at first, she waits for the opportunity to see Darrow understand how things work in reality and when nothing breaks through, she even tries manipulation and guilt-tripping. She gives up that he will ever understand and takes things into her own hands, sparing him what she can.
The idea of Eo and the idea of Darrow were not the real deals, though. Each of them were way too young to be in a marriage anyway, but with life expectancy of max. 50 years old, that was their normality.
Their divorce would have been interesting to see though, if things panned out differently.
I have so many thoughts about Red Rising and how Darrow is in love with the idea of Eo he has in his head but not her and I want nothing more than to TALK about it but I am scared to get involved online because I do not want spoilers lol

Someone said that Light Bringer felt like fanfiction or fan service at some points and they were so happy about it.
It did to me too, but...derogatory:
#since people are agreeing vehemently in the comments#lb reads like the author is a fanboy and rearranges everything to suit one character the most#and does nothing to tie the knots properly#just fanservice with underdelivered plot#towards the end of the book the author is reminded that oh wait i actually have to get somewhere with this#offers some more fanservice but offa the character to seem like this is serious#and bails off into the sunset surrounded by yes man who lie abhorrently that 'this is his best yet. better than dark age'#and you know how much i adore this series and how obssessed I am with it#it literally hurts more to have something quite not good enough but what hurts the most is how disrespected the book was#pierce brown said that it took so long because he also focused on the live action that will prolly never happen or it will just fail#we quietly took so many delays thinking he is cooking something great#and all he does is play up nostalgia and fan service#i am sorry but i won't pretend this book is good when it's mediocre#are there worse books - absolutely!#this had no business taking 4 years to make and underdelivering so badly#just because the damn live action was prioritized over it

If Darrow and Virginia ever make a perfume ad for some reason, they would pose like this:
(Do take a moment to thank Henry Cavill for his slutty youth, when his Charles Brandon era got him slutty ads )

What is one line from any book you've read, that you feel like hits every single time? No matter how many times you read it.
“I would have lived in peace. But my enemies brought me war.”
No matter how many times I read it, it always gives me chills.

It's ironic Red rising is the series that got me out of a reading slump just to put me into another. I'm not able to read anything until Red god is out. Help.
#i would suggest iron widow for the emotional investment and violence#and the cool storyline obvs i don't rec badly written stuff 😅#not since lb came out 😮💨

Generational spin-off media is like “okay, what would be the most in-character way for the previous show’s protagonist to comprehensively fail as a parent?”
#darrow may be away mote often than indicated for kids pax's age but he did not raise lysander so that is a win 🥂#and he also did not commit treason or settle a cynical retirement and he did not become a cop
