ZoSan - Music and Lyrics AU
Musician!Zoro and Compositor!Sanji
ok, hear me out: musician!Zoro and compositor!Sanji, BUT they don’t know each other.
See, Zoro is an outstanding musician, he plays any kind of instrument and even can play three at a time if the methods are favorable, but even tho he has an angelic voice, he can’t write lyrics to save his life. He sucks at lyrics so much that he takes Luffy’s advice (who doesn’t know shit about music but somehow still has an opinion on the matter) and goes complete sound experience artist. He has become even more popular than before now that he focuses on the chords and not on the lyrics.
His manager, Nami (because of course is Nami), tries to persuade him to partner up with someone else, but Zoro insists on going solo.
He receives an invitation to a collab with the Soul King and it’s kind of fun at first but their music just doesn’t match, and even tho they stay in contact for future collabs Zoro doesn’t think he can pair up with the lunatic again. He had just too many ideas in three seconds and comes up with the weirdest instrument combinations and even tho it always ends up sounding good, it sometimes is a mess and Zoro can’t focus on which instrument to start playing at which time or compass.
In a social gathering Zoro doesn’t want to be at and Nami forces him to go, he meets the super rock star Franky and his (creepy looking) manager Robin, and after a chat, Zoro refuses yet another collab with the perverted big guy. But Nami butts in and has a lively conversation with Robin in which she tells her that there is this new compositor who keeps asking for a job and is being said he’s a great poet. Nami takes the initiative to search for the guy even when Zoro is reluctant of having a partner.
Zoro didn’t expect the guy to accept the job in less than one phone call, because Nami demanded so many things at the same time, like: the lyrics have to be impartial so Zoro can sing it freely and not start rumors; Zoro has to have entire freedom in the music matter; the guy can’t write about something they didn’t accord beforehand; etc.
Zoro isn’t convinced yet and asks for a test, and to his surprise the next day a long-nose black guy appears on their doorstep with the lyrics at hand. His name was Usopp and he was the compositor’s agent (actually his delivery guy) and he hadn’t read the lyrics either. Zoro, Nami, and Usopp read it together and it’s just awesome. Usopp goes in a proud mood since he has known the guy for a long time and hadn’t had any doubts about his talent (he had), Nami is awestruck at the magnificent writing, and Zoro is speechless. He doesn’t want to admit that the lyric is great, but also can’t take down a great compositor. Zoro asks Nami to request a meeting for the contract but the mysterious compositor refuses and requests to do their jobs through Usopp. Somehow this ended up with a friendship between Luffy, Usopp, and Chopper (Zoro’s adoptive younger brother). They just hang out bothering him in the studio doing nothing specific.
Zoro stays in close contact with the compositor, asking for requests, giving advice in chords, and trying to connect with the guy, but he keeps avoiding each question directed to him instead of the songs. The lyrics he sends are still amazing and sentimental, and Zoro can do whatever he pleases with the music because it just sticks with everything.
When he finally finished the recording for his new album, he thought he would finally get the compositor’s name, but instead, is hit by a pseudonym: Mr. Prince. And he’s confused because he was so sure he had heard the nickname before, but couldn’t remember where exactly. A very very long time ago, he heard that name, when he wasn’t so invested in music, when his parents and sister hadn’t died yet.
Zoro doesn’t hear of him in a long time, since Nami gave him a little vacation before going with the next job. Zoro goes to interviews and music channels to talk about his new album. Sometimes they would mention the compositor but return quickly to Zoro instead of asking more about the guy.
Zoro is stressing himself out because he can’t take Mr. Prince off his head and everyone starts noticing. So Usopp invites him, Luffy, and Chopper to a boys’ outing to this new restaurant that just opened a few months ago but is said to have the best cuisine in the entire city. Zoro is somehow bored at the time, watching the others eat like starved men. He knows, he just tasted the food ok, so he knows. The rumors weren’t exaggerating, they could be even underestimating the restaurant’s food. At some point in the night, he hears the light sound of a piano. He remembered seeing a piano somewhere inside the gigantic restaurant. Without noticing he got up and followed the sound of the piano, recognizing little by little the piece being played.
Zoro loses the sound about three times, and he’s praying that the music doesn’t stop. When he finally reached the piano, he finds a slick blond man playing it, with such concentration. The lounge is empty, and Zoro figures it was an event hall. The echo makes the melody even more mesmerizing, and Zoro can’t think straight anymore. The sensation of floating in midair ends abruptly when the blond notices him and stops playing.
“Hello,” says the blond with a surprised look, “if your last name isn’t Don Quixote and it isn’t ten-thirty, I don’t think I was expecting anyone.”
Zoro stumbled in his words when he tried to apologize, and the blond laughed a little. Zoro caught himself blushing for unknown reasons and changed the subject as fast as he could. The blond introduced himself as Sanji Black, without any further explanation. If he wasn’t one of the Don Quixote family himself, what was he doing in here, then?
“That was one of KingOfHell’s,” Zoro didn’t want him to know who he was, at least for now, “y’know, the one that you just played.”
“Ah! Yes! I’m a big fan of his! Do you know of him?” Sanji’s eyes just started to shine the moment they changed the subject to music.
“Have you heard the new album? They say is amazing.” Zoro never was so egotistical, but for just this fan, he would like to see how fans see him.
“Well, I haven’t. I don’t have enough money to buy it, and it’s eating me alive to not have it.”
Sanji continued to blab about how fantastic the KingOfHell was and how extraordinaire of a person he was, and how excited Sanji was about the new album release because he would start to sing again, and whoa he really knew about Zoro’s career so much, it almost creeped him out. But it was average for a fan to be so invested in his favorite artist’s life nowadays, he really couldn’t find anything creepy about the guy, anyways. The clock turned ten-fifteen and Sanji pushed Zoro out of the event hall. He accompanied Zoro to his table and offered everyone a dessert from the house, and that’s how Zoro realizes he’s a waiter if not a chef of the place, and he immediately has a crush on the dude. Like, damn, who’s this gorgeous man who claims to be my biggest fan, knows how to cook splendidly, it’s the fucking sous-chef of the place and knows how to play the piano so goddamn good. And because Zoro has big money he starts going almost daily to the restaurant and sometimes asks Sanji to play a piece in the piano. He’s just lovestruck by now and Luffy and Nami can’t hold the laughter at his dumbness. They became very close friends but Zoro is still reluctant about telling him he’s the KingOfHell so Sanji is still very far away from getting intimate with him because he just knows Zoro’s hiding something.
Zoro gets very conflicted with his two different lives, so he resorts to his sessions-like with his composer. The so-called Mr.Prince is a very understanding dude and listens to the whole story. He doesn’t answer right away, Zoro even though he didn’t know how to respond to his situation, then claimed he indeed was in a similar situation, but instead with a crush, it was with his family. For the first time, Zoro was the one listening and not talking, and it gave him a feeling of dizziness. Mr. Prince opened up to him, and that was a good sign they were getting closer. That would look good for future jobs, too.
Not too long after talking things with Mr.Prince, he sends the lyric of the song they were working on, and it is just astounding, like always. But there is something along the lines that keeps Zoro on his nerves. Mr.Prince told him that it would sound so cool with a fast rhythm, to make people dance and jump and shout the song, but Zoro didn’t find it proper to give a party song such an angsty lyric. Maybe Mr. Prince was avoiding the subject, because he would know what his own song was talking about. He would know that a lyric with a double (could he say triple?)-meaning would be forgotten the moment the rhythm strikes.
So Zoro denied the request and made his own music. The lyric of the song wasn’t just what Mr.Prince was feeling, about always being behind a screen, never having a chance to show the world what a great person he was, not having support from anyone, and being treated differently from everyone else because he couldn’t do anything more than use his hands in obnoxious hobbies. No, it was what Zoro felt, too. About his double life, about his crush on a normal almost poor guy (tho didn’t know why, he was the sous-chef after all), about his losses, about his career, and about the person he wanted to become. So no, Zoro wasn’t going to give it a poor, party dancer sound, but a nostalgic and unforgettable sound, that could move every single person alive. He didn’t care about the rumors anymore, as Nami warned him. He didn’t even care if the next album wasn’t related to it. He would just release a single, then.
He took the piano, an instrument he hadn’t touched in decades but the memories were still so vivid, and composed at his heart's content.
Even tho he wanted the melody to be amazing, to be melancholic, to be draining, to be heart-breaking, to be just perfect, he couldn’t find the right thing for the bridge. Like, everything else was literal fire, but the bridge? He didn’t know what to do with it. He wanted it to be the breaking point, where everyone started to cry his eyes out, but he couldn’t find the right fucking tone. So he goes to the All Blue, to visit his beloved friend and take a rest for a minute. If he was this exhausted, he couldn’t even start to imagine how tiring most have been to write such a poem.
Sanji’s father, Zeff, tells Zoro that the blond is taking his break and is probably playing the piano again. Zoro goes to Sanji and finds him just as Zeff said. Zoro knows by now that he can’t interrupt the cook’s concentration. The melody he’s playing isn’t a melody Zoro has heard before, so he pays close attention to the blond’s hands. The melody is full of melancholy and sadness, and Zoro can’t help but run again against Mr.Prince’s song. And then Sanji slows down and the world slows down too, and it hits Zoro hard. Sanji tells him that is one of his diseased mother’s favorite songs, and she would play it to him every night. They talk a little about Zoro’s frustration with the song (being able to not give away the secret he was a musician of course) and how that was draining him a lot. Sanji tells him to have a break and invites Zoro on a date, and Zoro wouldn’t let down such an offer. Sanji led him around the city at night, guiding him into sweatshops and bakeries, talking about how good it would be to own a tiny restaurant, in a tiny town, making sweats and pastries for the ladies in town, help out some old hag, live in the nature, away from all worries and burdens of the world, just… stay in a corner of the world with his own rules. Such a poetic future, Zoro thought. Sanji looked so beautiful he wanted to kiss him. And when it hits midnight, some crazy random decides it is a great day to fly fireworks even tho it wasn’t an important date (Luffy, Sabo, and Ace), and Sanji’s eyes just shine in the night. That stargazing blue eyes, looking amused and happy, and just so full of love, and… a very nostalgic view. Zoro indeed though it was nostalgic. The nostalgic type that could bring him thirteen years back to the town he lived before with his sister. The nostalgic type that recreated an exact moment but at different times. The nostalgic type that made him realize something so precious to him he was shaking with happiness. All made sense now.
He couldn’t say it to Sanji, yet. But he would, eventually. Zoro returns to his studio where Luffy is being sold by Nami for eating again in the control cabin, and finishes the partiture. He calls Usopp over, because he wants to pass on a message to Mr.Prince, and tells Nami he wants the radio on call. He tells the broadcasters that he is going to have a concert in three weeks (Nami convinced him because he wanted to do it the next Friday and that was impossible to assemble) and the money paid for the entrance will be donated to social care, but besides that, the entrance is free (in the sense it’s paid the same day when you get in).
Everyone is shocked but of course, no one denies it to him. Nami thinks is character development and Luffy thinks is funny to see Zoro so weak for someone. Usopp is just confused at this point.
In the concert he plays a lot of songs, some of his old songs, some of his new songs, and the crowd is just SO hyped and happy, and even Zoro feels good to see so many fans around him that love him and maybe it isn’t so bad to be a musician after all. Maybe I can interact with my fans more often like Nami said. In the middle of the concert, he reveals his true identity because he just got so bored of having different lives in different places and trying to get a balance but that balance was never going to happen. He feels free and starts having fun for the first time in a very long time. Luffy, Chopper, and Usopp are hyped and Nami is biting her nails. Turns out Zoro invited the Soul King and SuperFranky over, too, and now the three of them are having fun and oh wow social care gotta be rich by now. At the end of the night, almost midnight, the lights go slowly down, and there is just Zoro and a piano on the scenery. Nami doesn’t give a shit by now, expectant of what the bastard is doing. And so he goes, the first chords for his newest song. He talks on the mic while his hands follow an invisible music sheet.
“This is my newest single, so for obvious reasons, you haven’t heard of it yet. As you may know, I suck at writing lyrics, so I have a composer you always seem to forget about. He’s called Mr.Prince if anyone has heard of him before. He’s a very kind and comforting person. Has helped me in many ways I didn’t think I could be helped. And he brought me joy in my job. He composed this song, too, and it would be my pleasure to show it to you since is his best work so far.”
He plays the song, with Mr.Prince’s lyrics and his music. Everyone’s in awe. Backstage, Chopper, Usopp, Franky, Brook, and Luffy are sharing a cry. When Zoro gets to the bridge he only thinks of Sanji. His smile, his voice, his laugh, his food, his kind heart… and in Mr.Prince, who sold his heart to Zoro in every piece of writing. The song finishes and the crowd explodes in cheers. Zoro takes the mic again, filled with what he hopes is the courage to what he’s about to say.
“I have not enough words to thank all of you for being here. You don’t know how much it means to me seeing you here all gather up to see some sweaty bastard playing a lot of instruments at the same time or listen to great, yet weird music from two awesome, yet stupid rock stars. Or even just for the social care money, I don’t care what’s your reason to be here, I just wanna thank you. This isn’t just me, all the songs I sang tonight were written by my partner Mr.Prince, and I want everyone to know that. Even if he doesn’t, even when he tells me he doesn’t like fame and that he’s already busy with other things, I want you people to acknowledge his work. Because I do, and I don’t know where I would be without him.” He looks at the crowd, expectant, hopeful, nervous. “I know you’re here, Prince!” he finally shouts. “And I hope my words get to you, just as yours got to me. If there was ever a chance for us to meet, please, say something! I can’t write you a poem, I can’t compose you a song… just… let me give you a melody you can follow.”
The crowd is silent, expectant of what will happen next. Zoro was waiting for Mr.Prince to appear, to give him some sign, to give him something. Apparently, the crowd was waiting for it, too. Zoro was losing hope when he heard someone cry the name of Mr.Prince. Little by little, the shout got louder and louder as people joined the call. Even with all the crowd calling his name, the composer never showed up. The concert was over with Zoro’s last thanks. He got down and was met with his teary friends. Chopper and Luffy jumped to hug him, and he could see Robin passing tissues to Franky. Nami was smiling behind her hands with blushed cheeks and red eyes. Everyone was happy for him and the amazing show he just gave, and proud at how much he had changed over a year. But Zoro was nowhere near the feeling of satisfaction. He couldn’t see his composer. He got silent and didn’t express any emotion towards his friends. When they asked and he told them, gripping his hands with so much force they almost bleed, Usopp smiled.
“Well…I wouldn’t lose hope, yet.”
Then, Sanji appeared out of nowhere, trying to catch his breath with his messy hair and his messy clothes. He was a total mess.
“You can’t just say those cringy lines in front of the entire world, Marimo!” He looked exhausted from all he had to run. “Do you even know how embarrassing was to look at you on the stage? Damn, I was dying inside, and I wasn’t even close to it! I’m pretty sure you left your fans hanging on a cliff tonight. Let me tell you, it was a shock when I found out you were the KingOfHell, Usopp never told me anything related before. Now that I know it’s you I feel embarrassed of all the times I blab about, well, you. And,” he laughed, “where do those cheesy ass lines come from? I never took you off the romantic type-” Zoro didn’t let him finish, as he rushed to him and hugged him. He stayed there, embracing the blond, waiting for him to say something else, or to push him away, or just do something. Sanji returned the hug and asked in a whisper only Zoro could hear.
“How did you know? I tried hard so you couldn’t recognize me.”
“Making me fall for you not only twice but three times in a row makes me wonder” he chuckled.
“I bet that without me you had already gotten lost in who knows where.”
“Lucky me I have you.”

Curious to get your take on Freddie & Brian's songwriting partnership in comparison to Lennon-McCartney's. I was reading an article that said Lennon-McCarney tastes and personalities complemented each other, which is why they were so successful in writing together. Freddie and Brian not so much, we know they had very different personalities, but one could argue that they were closer and trusted each other more than John & Paul . (1 of 2 )
(2 of 2) At times, I think Brian doesn't realize how much Freddie cherished him. The early albums were really 50% freddie, 50% brian. Yes, Freddie was a musical genius but so is Brian. Crazy that Brian describes himself as an 'occasional songwriter'. Half of the Queen catalogue is him! And his guitar work is impeccable <3
-------------------
Yeah, those early albums really were Freddie and Brian’s work. I don't think Brian thinks highly of himself as a songwriter, which is funny, because people accuse him of being an egomaniac 🙄
It's also really funny that Brian and Freddie have this weird reputation for hating each other when Freddie wrote a song that was literally like, "Brian is my best friend, my champion, he can do anything, he's somebody you can love, he's my soul brother." Meanwhile, Lennon wrote a diss track about McCartney lmao
I think Freddie and Brian’s personalities were similar in ways that mattered. They both had quiet, reflective sides, were hopeless romantics (and total hot messes with love), and were pretty sensitive. They weren't shallow fuckboys, despite others in their line of work and what Phoebe people sometimes say about Freddie. I think that's why Brian was not only able to write serious emotions from Freddie's perspective ("Save Me", "The Show Must Go On"), but that Freddie trusted Brian to literally put words in his mouth about his own feelings, too. I'm sorry but McLennon's songwriting partnership has nothing on "Save Me" alone lol. Freddie started riffing, "save me" over Brian’s guitar, and Brian went, "Ahhh, gotcha, I need to write a song about how you rent out your soul in one-night stands and you're naked and far from home." Top 5 lunatic behavior (affectionate)

Test for Echo, Freud, and Elden Ring (Shadow of the Erdtree)
Thinking about how not all examples of fantasy stories come from books or film, sometimes they are found in song. Thinking about the lyricism of Canadian Progressive Rock band Rush.
If it wasn't obvious - the Shadowlands is a Freudian nightmare. The surrealism of Salvadore Dali was heavily influenced by Freudian psychoanalysis and the cocoon of the empyrean is staged to resemble Dali's work Geopoliticus Child Watching the Birth of the New Man.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Recently released Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon directly has an AC pilot named "Freud" whose emblem is a hand emerging from shadow holding a key (AC unit called "Locksmith").
Tumblr media
And as it turns out, Neil Peart - lyricist for Rush - also was drawing inspirations from Freud while writing songs for Test for Echo (1996).
"I've always been curious about all religions, and the Totem idea came from the Freud book 'Totem And Taboo', which I ran across at the Chalet studio where we were working just in the bookshelf in the living room. I had been kind of rediscovering Freud by way of Jung and getting to understand the really deep stuff he was dealing with as opposed to some of the pop psychology that we were fed growing up, and I thought Totem And Taboo was such a beautiful title because it's what we fear and what we worship. Totem being what we worship and Taboo being what we fear. What a beautiful, embracing metaphor. At one time, the song Resist was called 'Taboo' because I wanted to have the two little set pieces of what we fear, and in 'Totem' I was just trying to appropriate all religions because that's what I found looking around at different religions and different systems, is that they all have something good. So I thought why not have them all? The 'Buddha smile' is a nice thing, and I'd like to have 12 Apostles...it's all great. It was really just a kind of tongue and cheek, all the good things of different religions." Neil Peart, Jam! Showbiz, October 16, 1996
The lyrics to the songs can be found here: https://www.rush.com/albums/test-for-echo/
It's a fantasy that people of all religions and esoteric beliefs would get together to craft their perfect god to fear and worship. Fortunately, Elden Ring is a fantasy. From the song "Totem", how many of the faith systems here can you spot represented somewhere in the game?:
I’ve got twelve disciples and a Buddha smile The Garden of Allah – Viking Valhalla A miracle once in a while I’ve got a pantheon of animals in a pagan soul Vishnu and Gaia – Aztec and Maya Dance around my totem pole I believe in what I see I believe in what I hear I believe that what I’m feeling Changes how the world appears Angels and demons dancing in my head Lunatics and monsters underneath my bed Media messiahs preying on my fears Pop culture prophets playing in my ears I’ve got celestial mechanics To synchronize my stars Seasonal migrations – daily variations World of the unlikely and bizarre I’ve got idols and icons, unspoken holy vows Thoughts to keep well-hidden – sacred and forbidden Free to browse among the holy cows That’s why I believe Angels and demons inside of me Saviors and Satans all around me Sweet chariot, swing low, coming for me
And then there's Resist, which has some Miquellian themes:
I can learn to resist Anything but temptation I can learn to co-exist With anything but pain I can learn to compromise Anything but my desires I can learn to get along With all the things I can’t explain I can learn to resist Anything but frustration I can learn to persist With anything but aiming low I can learn to close my eyes To anything but injustice I can learn to get along With all the things I don’t know
But neither of these songs were the tip off for why I thought to look more closely at this album. It was the Crucible Knights and Bloodhound Knights. They've always had the odd quirk of being named for geological periods. That's a lyric from the song Dog Years:
I’d rather be a tortoise from Galapagos Or a span of geological time Than be living in these dog years
Ironic that the tortoises in Elden Ring have no text option allowing them to be labelled appropriately, so the community has decreed them "dog".
There are other songs from this album that I can see represented in Elden Ring. The title song Test for Echo is about how people yearn for connection, but what the mass media landscape delivers is sensationalism and acts of violence around the world. In 30 years this hasn't really improved. A picture of an inunnguaq was selected for the album cover from fascination for the way that the simple stone structure provides evidence of the existence of other humans having travelled before through a desolate landscape. And as I have mentioned before, Radagon's story has hints of Narcissus and Echo.
Tumblr media
This is bookended by the final song on the album Carve Away the Stone. The song suggests that like the Greek Sisyphus, all people are eternally rolling their own stones up a hill in the form of emotional baggage or other trauma. But people aren't static like a character from a story - they don't need to carry that weight forever. If you have the opportunity to shape your own destiny, why not take it? This would be related to the way that both Marika and Radagon appear to be carved of stone.
There's also the largely instrumental song that is second to last on the album and titled Limbo. It's implied to be vampire themed by one of the few vocal cut-ins being in a goofy vampire voice ("Whatever happened to my Transylvania twist?"). So like, Messmer the Impaler in the limbo-coded Shadowlands. His allusions to vampirism firstly being an epithet invoking Vlad the Impaler and also he has only false/closed eyes so he can't self reflect (one of the superstitions of vampires being that their reflection won't show up in a mirror because the mirrors in those days were polished silver). The archetype of the vampire in the Shadow is Jungian stuff and like I said - Neil Peart was thinking about depth psychology while writing this album.
For the rest of the songs the potential connections are more vague ("Time and motion / Flesh and blood and fire / Lives connect in webs of gold and razor wire" - Time and Motion) ("Gravity and distance / Change the passage of light / Gravity and distance / Change the color of right" - The Color of Right).
This isn't the only Rush album that I find possibly to have had some influence on the Radagon/Miquella/Mohg portion of Elden Ring. There's also the album 2112 (1976) back in Rush's earlier fantasy/sci-fi era, which introduces the Priests of the Temples of Syrinx - a kind of thought police represented by a red star - and mentions twin moons being in the sky. It was Rush's breakthrough album in America, followed the next year by A Farewell to Kings (1977), for which the notable songs include A Farewell to Kings, Xanadu, and Closer to the Heart. Also the album cover shows a puppet king slumped on a throne in front of a crumbling building. But again like with Test for Echo, one could imagine how all songs on the album might be combined to create an overall sense of time period.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm not making a case for FromSoft promoting Freudian pseudopsychology, for the record. All this psychoanalysis stuff is in the Shadowlands and nobody in the Lands Between cares about what's in the Shadowlands. It's in the past, dead and buried. You can no more decide the course of the future by replicating the past than you can create a sustainable global economy by learning economics through playing Elden Ring.

it's now time for...
music recs from beyond the grave!
a series in which i yap about my latest discoveries
Lunatic Soul
Solo studio music project of Mariusz Duda, lead singer of the Polish progressive rock band Riverside, Lunatic Soul's dark musical atmosphere evokes this intense feeling one can experience at twilight. There's something quite mystical about it, as if the winds and the mountains were whispering in your ear.
From the album Walking on a Flashlight Beam (2014):
Eastern High
This Swedish metal band's progressive approach can sometimes be reminiscent of Aether Realm's sound, although I feel it has a more mystique spirit — if that's even possible. Let's just say, as a Ghost fan: there's something in Swedish music that makes it impossible for them to make anything but bangers (I don't think this can be proven wrong).
Today's recs are from their first album, Garden of Heathens (2017). The first one, Afterglow, is the last song in the album (yeah, I like doing things the wrong way round). It is quite atmospheric, with almost ethereal vocals and clear acoustic guitar sounds.
The next one, Bottled Insanity (the first in the album, ha!), goes harder: with heavy guitar riffs and deep growls in the middle, it is quite reminiscent of melodic death metal. There is a notable contrast between soft and heavy passages, which I appreciate a lot. I find that the guitar solo is bleeding through very nicely. Side note: the chorus feels very solemn — which is a plus in my book, considering the vibe of this song.
Cellar Darling
A Swiss heavy progressive folk rock band! This trio was previously part of Swiss folk metal band Eluveite, and decided to embark on a different path — one free of any creative limits.
In their first studio album This Is the Sound (2017), vocalist Anna Murphy's powerful voice, combined with the rich sound of her hurdy-gurdy and heavy riffs, manages to throw you into a mystical experience. You'd almost expect Morgan le Fay to come out of the nearest bush, belting this song.
They also covered Queen's The Prophet Song (in 2018). Here, again, Anna Murphy's vocals are pure delight to the ears.
Zaho de Sagazan
This French singer-songwriter made a splash by covering Bowie's Modern Love for the opening of the Cannes Film Festival 2024, as a nod to Greta Gerwig's nomination as the jury's president. During this performance, she threw herself into the music — as she always does on stage — and invited us all into her world of electronic music.
She declared falling in love with the German language later, although she did study it in high school. From this, she decided to cover the famous song 99 Luftballons, by West German band Nena.
Zaho de Sagazan is hypersensitive, something that brought her a lot of trouble as a kid. But, “One day [she] discovered music, and [she] realized that by crying over [her] piano did [her] a lot of good, it didn't hurt anyone and above all it gave pretty songs. [She] realized that what [she] thought was [her] greatest flaw in life was ultimately [her] greatest quality”. From this discovery, the song La symphonie des éclairs (literally “The symphony of lightning”) was born.
Aaaand I've hit the hellsite's limit for Spotify integrations... Which means, without any surprise, that I'll continue these recommendations in another post (depending on this one's reception). I hope you enjoyed listening to all of these, as much as I've enjoyed writing about them!
Have a nice day, and don't forget to feel the music!

⋘ 𝑙𝑜𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑑𝑎𝑡𝑎... ⋙
0102am. I'm looking down at my BTS albums of the past, reminiscing about my childhood and remembering my days of youth. My newborn has finally fallen asleep and she will probably be awake again in 10 minutes or so. I'm honestly completely exhausted - drained out like a dead battery. But I'm happy. Adrenaline is the only thing keeping me going - it reminds me that I'm not alone anymore. I have a reason to keep going; my daughter and husband.
I remember the days when I would look at the night sky to fall asleep - thinking about how BTS and I will always be under the same sky, the same moon, and have the same respect for each other asserting that we had some connection beyond a screen. I remember the days when I would binge watch BTS videos all throughout the night, completely disregarding my piles of homework and assignments; laughing at the same video clips over and over and over again. I remember the days when I would have their posters all around the room - countless eyes smiling at me with influential empty happiness. But what I remember the most is loving them from the bottom of my heart.
I don't know when or how or why I fell for Jungkook out of the seven members. The first time I saw him was through the small screen of my phone - he was 17 and I was 9 years old. With his red hair, big nose, 'baby face', and in that awkward stage between a boy and a man. I chuckle writing this. He was so young, and so was I.
I remember trying to dream of him at night. I had read somewhere that people dream of their subconscious mind, so I would look at photos of him right before I went to sleep. And when I did dream of him, I would wake up smiling like a lunatic, bury my face into my pillow, and try to go back to sleep but with no avail. I remember printing and keeping a polaroid photo of him in my phone case, so that when I was crying alone in a bathroom cubicle at school, I would take out the image in futile hope that my pain would subside. I remember all of those fanfictions. Oh, those fanfictions. I need to stop laughing or my daughter will wake up again, but oh my lord. Wattpad was my home as a teenager. I would spend hours lying on my bed, reading those Jungkook x Reader fanfictions, the widest grin plastered onto my face. Looking back at it now, it was extremely cringey, but I understand that reading those stories were my way of zoning out of reality for a moment and taking a breather from the chaos that they classified as 'life'.
'Life' - so strange and so unpredictable. Sometimes I feel like there are several dimensions in this world, and which world you enter is based on what you truly wish for. Not a light wish like "I want to get full marks on this test," but a genuine, soulful wish: "All I want is to see him just once, that's all I want, that's what I need in the midst of tears and depression." And I remember making that desperate wish when I was younger - when I was fragile and sensitive, and wanting to disappear from the world. I made the same wish for years and years and years, to the point where my wish would naturally slip out of my mouth while blowing out the birthday candles. As these many years flew by, I felt like my wishes were pointless, that they were never going to be granted. But I made them anyway, because I deserved a life, I deserved to at least make a wish, to dream, to think. These albums that I hold in my hand, from over a decade ago, tell my story of suffering and pain and sadness, but they also remind me of my happiness, my hope, my reason to live all those years ago…my wish to see him just once
"Jagiya! She's woken up again and I can't get her back to sleep again! Come here quickly please!"
It was my husband.
"I'm coming Jungkook, I'll be right there!"

I'm in love with @ybcpatrick 's post!ybc au and I really need to scream my headcanons/silly little ideas into the void.
- one night the power goes out in the studio. instead of finding a flashlight, Pete goes "wait guys I got this" and just shakes Patrick until he gets angry enough for his eyes to glow yellow. they use him as a little nightlight. Andy, Joe, and Pete find it amusing. Patrick does not.
- Once Patrick got comfortable with walking around outside again, he constantly needs someone's hand to hold. Usually it was Pete's, Andy's, or Joe's, but sometimes when he was out with a manager or other members of the crew (when they eventually go on tour) he just. grabs their hand. and won't let go. and everyone around him just understands and if Patrick grabs their hand, they Do Not Let Go Under Any Circumstance.
-Patrick is a still considered the main suspect in Joes death and is wanted by the police, but since the major piece of evidence to convict him is a) Alive and b) Living with him, the police can't do anything about it. Doesn't stop Patrick from getting severely anxious anytime he notices a police officer around.
-Pete struggles with the things that he wants. He has essentially forced himself back into that old "protector" roll over the rest of the guys and because of that, he has a hard time conveying what he actually wants for himself. to help with decision making, Patrick gifts him one of those magic 8 balls as a sort of joke, and Pete becomes attached to it. now he consults the 8 ball on every decision
-during the production of save rock and roll, Joe dragged Patrick to their studio and helped him play guitar (joe played the chords while Patrick strummed). Patrick got over his apprehension of being alone with Joe pretty fast when he realized he got to play guitar again, and the two of them came up with the "Death Valley" riff together
- the day Patrick discovered that music no longer triggered him was the loudest the house had been in weeks. Patrick CONSTANTLY played music. his favorite albums and songs were always on repeat. he even put some quiet music on in the background while they slept. Patrick even took to singing along and dancing to his favorites and was the happiest he had been in a long time.
- Patrick has only one type of music banned in the house, and thats any song with Courtney Love in it. Joe also has banned Motley Crue from being played in the house.
-the four of them listen to at least one Elton John song a day. As a sort of thanks for bringing them all back to life.
-the first time the four of them went out in public together they met a small group of fans. Pete and Joe did the majority of the talking and allowed Andy and Patrick to stand back a bit. One girl asks if she can give a bracelet to Patrick and he says yes, and so she gives him a little Soul Punk friendship bracelet. After the fans left, Patrick nearly starts crying on the street. he NEVER takes that bracelet off.
-As a precaution, Patrick will wear sunglasses during interviews and occasionally out in public. Pete, Joe, and Andy will also wear sunglasses during interviews so that Patrick doesn't feel isolated or anything. When he eventually gets on stage, Patrick wears blue contacts.
-one time Pete and Patrick were being harassed by a street interviewer and it was really getting to Patrick, so he just took his glasses off and told the interviewer to fuck off. No one believed the guy when he started spouting about how Patrick Stump -- known by everyone to be such a nice, sweet guy-- had these crazy, glowing yellow eyes. Everyone thought the dude was a lunatic. Pete took the opportunity and mocked him on Twitter for it.
-Patrick changes the little LEDS on his hand to fit each album tour theme. for Save Rock and Roll, he uses his usual orange, but for AB/AP, he chooses blue (for Jet Pack Blues), purple for MANIA, and pink for Stardust.

what are your fave ee songs? i like making big playlist of "reset my music taste" to learn 🪲
THIS IS SUCH A FUN QUESTION OOOOOHHHHHH. if i was going to recommend a single album get to heaven is a good entry point and some of their best work, and very dense in terms of ideas put into a single album and it changed my life. in terms of specific songs much deliberation is required so i had to think about it for a while... but here is a sampling that spans their entire discography:
to the blade
Well, you called him a liar And you called him a piece of dirt And never can you take it back and Never can you make it right In the final seconds I think he knew everything you are A plague on the horizon In the cold arena where you're Trapped In the moment you met In the lifetime alive
it's hard to pick definitive favorites but this IS one of them
the wheel (is turning now)
Bone, to the blade, my letter, white feather, no halves Dread, that's what the devil said, my prison, my prison, my guard
duet
But of all the dead volcanoes on Earth You just happened to retch and roll through mine There were fistfuls of hair 'Round the foot of my chair And acres of screens before me But breathing out, I swear you were real
kemosabe
Four walls and a cauldron of Kalashnikoving And our home is a trigger that I'm always pulling At the border, at the, at the border I'm at the border, at the, at the border The short spears and the weak eternal monologuing And our war is the crucible of all your longing
don't try
Don't try to hide it, no, don't try Don't try to hide it, no, don't try 'Cause it'll have you in the end
good shot, good soldier
If I promise to be good And split open the grave mouth Would you take me to paradise? If my bones just fall away And my skin is a dust cloud Would you siphon my soul from air?
white whale
Never tell me that we can't go further
cold reactor
And maybe I'll go missing in the rain If God is in the mountain he won't answer me a single question Like, "Why does everybody feel the same?" The slow degeneration and the crying out, "Oh Lord, have mercy"
violent sun
And you heard it from the whispering wall Like the miracle of anything at all There's a way that you don't ever have to be a Lunatic or an error Or a prisoner of your terror
the mariana
The devil took me underwater He filled my lungs so I could change
jennifer
Try it again, try it another way
i thought i would include more from raw data feel because it's a very good album but it's harder to separate any song out from the whole, in comparison to something like get to heaven where basically every song could be a good introduction to the band on it's own. i chose jennifer because it's a 'simpler' song that still really sells the emotional beat it's trying to hit, and because it's a good example of the thing raw data feel does where some of the returning characters and metaphors throughout everything everything's music are stripped away a little or confronted, in relation to the album's themes about talking around the things that have happened to you, or refusing to look directly at yourself.
tin (the manhole)
I can not imagine the things they did to you I can not imagine the way it feels for you I can feel the gravity rushing into me I am but a hole in the fabric of the scene I was but a drop in the ocean all along
one time i was driving at night and a fox ran across the road in front of me while this song was playing…!
qwerty finger
So how will they remember us whole when we turn into salt? And it's mine, the fault Mine the dream and the vein, home of whale flesh Make soap out of it!
two for nero
I'm sure you'll make a decent Father, there's a world war coming in
maybe an odd choice but I'm very fond of it. the sense of time passing is interesting to me: this is something you see in a lot of ee songs, a feeling of distance or wideness. these processes occurring over generations, and the narrow viewpoints a person has to look out at, or back at them from, and the ability to imagine other viewpoints though we can never actually inhabit them. in contrast to the way that a song like tin (the manhole) moves from the starting point of a single, tiny creature and the mass of its biological history into the larger, top-down perspective of a greater power—both positions looking at and interacting with humanity from the outside, two for nero shows you that process from the inside, through a conversation between two parties intimately subject to the forces of time! it also makes me think of the thing they do in UR KZ MY BF (or get to heaven, or armourland...), which is about showing you two images overlaid—very literally trying to be an auditory version of something like martha rosler's collages combining american magazine spreads with vietnam war photos. two for nero deals with the way that memory can also be a source of these overlaid images.
...forgive me i had to get at least one paragraph in
luddites and lambs
Teeth and nails, your little anatomy War on the Tyne, you're playing a lottery Bodies replete with everything, everything All of the prisoners clamouring, clamouring I decide there's nothing in my body How can I be sure there's nothing in my body?
this is the first song they ever wrote and ("partially") where the name of the band comes from, so it kinda feels like a thesis statement

7:A song to drive to
19:A song that makes you think about life
7:A song to drive to As I mentionned before, I don't drive so I have no clue what makes a good driving song hahaha XD The first time I answered this question I provided the type of song I listened to when my dad drove me places. Now I shall provide a public transport song, a very clear memory in my brain from 2010-2015 when I was in university, which I rode the metro to for over an hour each way, every day. I had to keep myself hype and ready to tackle the Horrors of Socializing XD And this album was a regular spin to wake myself up at 6 in the morning while glued to people's backs in the metro.
Tumblr media
Of Mice & Men - Second & Sebring Some good ol' easy metalcore to whip you into shape at ungodly hours in the morning!
19:A song that makes you think about life Previously when I answered this question, I talked about how the death of an artist I never met or saw live but that meant ther world to me put life in perspective and made me ponder its meaning. Some fun lighthearted answer! XD So let's say equally lighthearted and talk about depression and anxiety weeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Life, when you're a neurodivergent person like me, when you have mental health issues and trasuma like me, is often about those differences or those disorders taking over. And if you get through that period of it taking over, then life becomes a reflection of what you've traversed and sucessfully conquered. In that same university period, you got me reminiscing today uh? xD, I dealt with some of the most intense bouts of anxiety I remember having. (Now that I know I'm autistic it was probably also autistic meltdown because of how overstimulated and strung tight I was in uni, but I digress). By 2015-2016 it got to the point where I could not leave my apartment to go grocery shopping, and I lived across the street from a grocery store. I could not feed myself I was so fucking terrified of having to interact with neighbours in the hallways and elevators; the thought of crossing the stress and maybe doing it wrong or not going at the right time or dropping something in front of cars of tripping in front of cars and getting ran over paralyzed me so I couldn't walk the few meters to the store; and don't even get me started on the store itself, the other patrons, the cashiers, people looking at the food I bought, etc. I was stuck in a cocoon where I was miserable and in profound pain and anguish 24/7. Music of course was one of the few things that kept me going. And I clung furiously to bands and artists that put the pain I felt in lyrics and songs. I just wanted to be seen and told what I experienced was normal. Artists who shared my pain were my buoys in the seemingly endless sea of anxiety paralysis. One of those core artists that kept me alive was Lunatic Soul with their Walking on a Flashlight Beam album.
Tumblr media
Lunatic Soul - Gutter Specifically this song, Gutter, felt like it held space for me and how I felt. Those lyrics. That felt like the description of a panic attack to me. That's how I felt all the time. "The fear is what I need, what I need to believe. The feer is what I need, what I need to feel." I lived on fear, and it killed me just as much as it kept me alive.
Nowadays I look back on this artist and this record and I still love them dearly, but they don't feel like words are taken out of my mouth anymore, thankfully. My live's done a full 180 since and I'm better than I have ever been. But Gutter is still a track that I made my life partner listen to when we met. Within a few weeks of getting together we were in her room and we traded meaningful songs of our lives back and forth, to get to know each other better. I played this one and another Lunatic Soul track about being terrified to be loved. We cried so fucking much. We knew, we saw each other, and things were alright. So yeah, Gutter I've used to summarize my life before. I feel it qualifies for the question haha.

Feast on Ferocity with Living With The Storm’s 'New Animal Culture' In the savage storm of musical mediocrity, Jim Bryant as Living With The Storm "New Animal Culture" erupts like a voltaic bolt, riotous and unapologetic. This art-pop colossus soars within its pixilated crescendos before crumbling into an effervescent sea of synthetic symphonies; electronic pop rendered with feral beauty. https://open.spotify.com/album/4svZd4RGKLbElf9Od0za1U "Mewling kitten to roaring puma in nine dizzying tracks!" The album ignites ferociously with "No Maps," weaving ghost whispers from forsaken refugee camps. It pirouettes on the edge of discordant catharsis, voicing unheard echoes against faceless oppression. Stark realism cut with electronic tempered steel but swaying findly as a dervish caught in populist melody. Snap! Just as gravity loses strength under feathery synths and celestial harmonies -- we crash back to earthbound mortality: “When did it get so dark?". This electro-dirge bathed incandescently in light laments teetering between haunting entropy and hopeful dream-state elation encapsulates Bryant's lunatic audacity – tickling us till laughter bleeds into tears! [caption id="attachment_55508" align="alignnone" width="1105"] Feast on Ferocity with Living With The Storm’s 'New Animal Culture'[/caption] Fearlessly slamming soulful evocations alongside algorithmic tonality - motley flavors mashed-up inside a hallucinogenic Richardsonian prism 'til they bleed eidetic turquoise. Astonishing! Short yet ample enough for gourmands to feast upon this delirious spectral banquet--a smoky tourmaline aurora that will continue to dance maddeningly behind closed eyelids at dawn’s first blush. Wash your ears aggrieved by today’s sludge-red homogeny in this Sea-of-Forgetfulness-green melody-shower — Living With The Storm ecstatic phantasmagoria: A reverie echoing through intersections of Byzantine electronica, baroque pop stagecraft and damned-if-I-care lyrical audacity; Scorn-euphoria-rapture! Each palaverous note a scintillating dervish spinning out cosmic insights, daring you to tame this 'New Animal' – welcoming you boldly into the eye of its storm...one sonic cyclone at a time. DITC 003 (90s Hip-Hop Mix)
Day seven of my twelve days of Patrick Dean. @patrickdeancomics
On the agenda today: movies screen sized memories and panic that exceeds logic. I am trying to make uneasy peace with this as it’s how March, April, and May roll out for me the last few years, but I just can’t pick through photo albums today and narrate at length.
So here’s something I wrote and posted a year ago on a cloudier day than today and a photo of our hands in his final days. He had gone without his rings for a while for logistical reasons, but he had asked me to put them on him again. Maybe they felt like armor or served as an anchor to his core identity in the ebbing tide. I just don’t know. So much remained unspoken at the end.
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
“May 2018 was spent suspecting the worst, summoning protection through blood work tithes for IT to be anything but ALS (begging for cancer like it was a lottery ticket), marinating in constant, maxed out anxiety for someone to pull the trigger on the words that would push us into a fringe existence that so few but way too many (more than none) understand.
May 2021 he was as sick as a human can get and still be alive. I was a shell of a wife, mother, circus freak rock star demolition expert raging activist resident lunatic. We had been gestating death together for so long that we had lost the algorithm of life. Not a soul in the wings could get close enough to whisper the next lines in our ears. The end.
May 2023 I have been watching my current storylines weave into my past for a few days now. I’m trying to catch the threads and send them home to the spindle, but my success rate today is abysmal. The forecast right now feels like any given day in that three year stretch between Mays…hazy with an absolute chance of nothing ever being normal again.
There’s always tomorrow for pulling out memories in the sun. Today the light is cast over - my irreverent lauds, vespers, and matins murmured above the shadowless ground.“
