There are two lunar calendars in the Jyotish Shastra… One is Purnaant and the other is Amaant…

There's a gap of 15 days between the two, although the order of the months are the same…

For instance, Deepavali's Lakshmi puja is on Purnaant Kartik Amavasya… while the same day is Amaant Ashwin Amavasya in some states…

So, the festival has a different reason in each region, and one common reason at the national level…

Like, the South, where the Lakshmi puja night of diwali is to recall the victory of Krishna over Narakaasur… In the North, it's for the return of Shri Ram to Ayodhya…

The concept of a civilisation made of many cultures dates back to the Treta Yug…

Diwali is celebrated for different days in different places… One day, three days, five days and eleven days… depending on the local history…

Yes… the different calendars, different cultures, but the same festivals, and the same civilisation…

I follow Rishi Varāhamihira's Brihat Samhita… In that, there is no need of dividing time into months and years…

The movements of cosmic objects don't need a calendar to have months and years… Only days are enough… Just count the days from a no-moon or a new-moon… the patterns are measurable and predictable…

Like,

The diwali always happens on the same no-moon night… regardless of which month in which state…

Thus, all the differences are dissolved in the universal medium… 🙂

In honor of my birthday, how do all the characters in LMK celebrate their/others birthdays?

Happy birthday! I hope its going well for you!

The only issue here is that not many of the immortal characters know their birthdays!

MK is the one who wants the "kiddie party" no matter how old he is. He wants the cake, the presents, the balloons, all the trimmings. Pigsy likely had to come up with a date (i've seen January 15th due to a note in MK's room) based on when he found MK in the canonverse.

Mei wants money and to left to her own chaos inside of an arcade/disco for a couple of hours. Sounds like what she'd do every other weekend right? WRONG. She's wearing a full flashy "birthday girl" outift with a tiara that declares her queen for the day. So you have to let her win at Monkey Mech if you're playing against her. Thats the rules.

Red Son hasn't celebrated his birthday in a long while because his dad wouldn't be there. I feel that the first birthday he truly celebrates if after the madness of S3. He wakes up to see that his mom and dad have set up a whole-all ball/gala to celebrate him. He gets overwhelmed quickly and has to hide away after an hour - MK and Mei acting as his distractions/grounding for the evening. Overwise Red Son would probably spend his birthday in his garage, probably "treating himself" to a luxury model car.

Sun Wukong and Macaque don't know what their birthdays are, so they just agree that it's the respective Solar and Lunar Solstices. Wukong in the book also identifies that he was born between 3 and 5pm (guess an older monkey told him), so I bet he waits until evening to start partying down. Mini havoc in heaven-level party on his good years. Macaque spends his birthday alone save for times he's treated to dinner by his sworn family/friends. At the end of the day they just want to spend their birthdays in eachother's arms.

Pigsy doesn't like acknowledging his birthday. Far too tied to his age. He does appreciate any bonus help around the kitchen on the day + brand new equipment as gifts though. Tang sees it as an excuse to be super PDA on the day too.

Tang becomes a "little king birthday" on his bday (mbmbam ref). He wants free noodles, he wants to be carried around, he schedules the next few days off work. He's insufferable to be around. Will take his entourage to fancy clubs and pay for their covers though.

Sandy is just delighted that people remembered! First time new friends wish him well or give him a gift, Sandy just starts crying. Loves getting new tea blends and novelty mugs. Treats himself to a day volunteering at the animal shelter.

Nezha doesn't like his birthday. Don't remind him... will enjoy a geniune personalised cake though.

My friend @erlenwein recently introduced her students to the different styles of Chinese opera. She also showed a video of these styles to me with some commentaries and I asked her to translate them into English (these commentaries very much expanded in the process).

1:33 Beijing opera 京剧 presented by two laodan 老旦，the role of older women. The play they're presenting is called ”杨门女将“ ("The female generals of the Yang family"), one of many plots based on the fictionalized story of the military Yang family (Song dynasty period). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Generals_of_the_Yang_Family

2:36 Yuju 豫剧 (Henan opera)， Kunqu 昆剧 (around Shanghai, one of the oldest forms of Chinese opera), presented by wenchou 文丑 (comical role, in this case literati). The name of the piece ( “话梨园” ) can be translated as "Talking about the Pear garden" (Pear garden being the metaphorical name for the opera world), but I couldn't find any specifics, and I frankly couldn't be arsed to read the subtitles, sorry. Fun fact: the white patch on their faces is called 'a piece of tofu'.

3:15 Chuanju 川剧 (Sichuan) presented by a huadan 花旦. The play is ”别洞观景“ ("Looking from a different side of the cave"? Seems like it). The main character singing is 白鳝仙 (Immortal White Eel?) who came to the world of mortals. Check out her use of pheasant feathers! Usually the most known thing about Sichuan opera is their technique of 变脸, changing the masks really fast, but they decided to showcase a different role here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ayy7wcfeHU - Face-changing performance.

3:57 Chaozhou (Teochew) opera 潮剧 (Chaoshan region, southern Fujian and eastern Guangdong), presented by xiaosheng 小生 (young man, usually a romantic character) and huadan 花旦 (young woman in a romance plot). The play is “苏六娘” ("Su Liuniang").

4:34 Pingju 评剧 (Hebei opera), presented by huadan 花旦. The play is “花为媒” (“Matchmaking flowers").

5:07 Yueju 越剧 (Shaoxing opera, from Zhejiang), presented by xiaosheng 小生 and huadan 花旦. Both performers are women — it's typical for Yue opera, since the art form switched to primarily female troupes in 1930s. The play presented is “梁山伯与祝英台” ("Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai"), a very popular story often referred to as "Chinese Romeo and Juliet". You might've seen it also being called "Butterfly Lovers".

6:31 This part is just called 武戏, "military opera". It starts with a wuchou 武丑, comical military role, then wusheng 武生 (military male role) and wudan 武旦 (military female role) come out to present their fighting, juggling, and acrobatic skills. The flags behind their backs show their status as generals/officers. I can't imagine the skill needed to do this all so seemingly effortlessly. *I've seen mentions that the flags 靠旗 represent an army under the command of the character wearing them, but I can't find any info on it again to back up my claims. If you know something about it, please let me know! The piece is titled “杨威奋勇” (I'm not quite sure how to translate it, but it seems to refer to the Yang family again).

8:32 And back to 京剧 with laosheng 老生 (older men, also known as bearded sheng 须生). The play is “龙凤呈祥” ("Dragon and phoenix bringing prosperity").

At 2AM in September in Singapore’s Cé La Vi, several of us wondered what Hello Kitty sounded like out loud. 

Earlier this January, I bought Special Edition Hello Kitties to celebrate Lunar New Year. I wondered how old/young at heart she was, particularly after growing up with her in Shanghai. 

Google said she was turning 50 this year! So I pinged our @GoldHouseCo founding member, Rehito Hatoyama, former CEO of @Sanrio, and asked him what it would take to honor Hello Kitty at the “Asian Pacific Met Gala.” He linked us with COO Craig Takiguchi, whose heart matched the legacy of Hello Kitty. This would be a “first” for them, but after sharing our mission and work, he linked us with the incredibly collaborative and creative Myhien Layne and Michelle Miyashiro whom @CaroDolphin and I worked with for nearly 2 months to ensure that every need was met: she could only appear in one place, anytime, anywhere; she could only engage in 20-minute intervals; she would not speak out loud; etc. Thanks to the incredible Sanrio team, we were able to deliver a stunning, nostalgic surprise with one of the most beloved characters and franchises in history. #hellokitty#iconsonly

(Quite coincidental timing, if you ask me.) Fan Observation:��The photos used were leaked by August 2022, and the song demo was leaked in October 2021.

Also, the Instagram’s pfp was changed again, now to one of the most recent white haired photos. This might have happened a day or two earlier before I noticed.
