Name Meanings in Trainwrecks
My favorite thing to do when I get a new fandom is to go through the character list and look up what their names mean, and for some reason I haven't done that with Trainwrecks yet. So here we go!
MAIN CHARACTERS
Luna- Latin "moon"
Alexis- Greek "helper, defender"
Cruz- Spanish "cross"
Sebastian- L "from a venerable place"
Velasquez- Sp "crow"
Duke- L "leader"
Earl- Old English "nobleman, warrior"
Kingston- OE "king's town"
Jasmine- En "climbing plant with fragrant flowers"
Nolan- Irish "descendant of the famous/loud one" ; Chinese (nuò lán) 诺 (nuò) "promise; assent, approve", 兰 (lán) "orchid; elegant, graceful"
Dimitri- Gr "earth mother"
Victoria- En "victory"
Hale- Arabic "halo around the moon" ; En "nook, retreat"
PARENTS/FAMILY
James- Hebrew "heel-grabber, trickster"
Carmine- L "song" ; H "garden"
Sophia- Gr "wisdom"
Makoto- Japanese "sincerity"
Leilana- Hawaiian "heavenly flowers ; royal child" (Leila) Ar "night"
Hirashima- J "peace island"
Whitney- En "white island"
Julian- Gr "downy-bearded" ; L "sky father"
Felicia- L "lucky, successful"
Régine- L "queen"
Moreaux- French "dark-skinned, dark brown, black" ; Roman "North African, Moorish"
Ray- En "beam of light" ; German "advice/counsel/decison, protection"
SIDE CHARACTERS
Aliana- Gr "torch/corposant/moon ; sun" ; H/Gr "gracious defender" H/G "gracious nobility"
Sanchez- Sp "son of the saintly/holy one"
Allen- En "little rock, handsome"
Marcus- L "male"
Flynn- I "blood red"
Latricia- L "joy, happiness; nobleman"
Bernice- Gr "bringing victory"
Oak- En "oak tree"
**translation notes**
Some names were a little difficult to translate, because they just mean stuff like "son of _____" or "from _____". In cases like these, I extrapolate meaning from the place or person the name is based on. For example, Sebastian literally means "from Sebaste". But that tells me nothing unless I know what Sebaste means. So I do a bit more research and discover Sebaste means "venerable"; hence, "from a venerable place". Sanchez and the Irish translation of Nolan were like this as well. (Nolan comes from O Nuallán.)
Also, I don't know Chinese, so I had to turn to Google to see what the original spelling/meaning of Jasmine's Anglicized last name might be. Google gave me nuò lán, so that's what I went with.
Several names have been translated from the original language many times. (Dimitri is a good example.) The language I listed by each translation is the original language. If a name has more than one possible origin, such as "Hale", they were all listed. Then you have names like Aliana and Latricia, which are mashups of other existing names (Alice/Alex + Ana; La + Patricia), which makes translation fun and totally not frustrating. Aliana is actually a double fun one because it can be a mashup, or it could possibly come from either the Greek Helios OR the Greek Helene, which have opposite sun and moon connotations!! It actually is fun. I love doing this.
Another rule I put in place was only to do characters who have appeared/spoken so far. This includes Victoria's great aunts, even though they only showed up in a bonus story, but does not include her extended family who were referenced in the same bonus story. They're not really a part of the story. But characters like Latricia Oak, Marcus Flynn, and Allen O. are, so they get coverage. Maybe I'll do the other members of the Hale family (and other mentioned minor characters) in a separate post...
(Wait a minute... Latricia Oak... Allen O... they're both running in sketchy circles... have I stumbled onto something here? 👀👀)
Anyway, I want to elaborate on how the name meanings relate to the characters, but this post is long enough, so that'll have to wait. :)

Alanna Vagianos at HuffPost:
Republican Sens. Ted Cruz (Texas) and Katie Britt (Ala.) on Monday introduced legislation to protect in vitro fertilization, months after a controversial Alabama Supreme Court ruling that led providers to halt the fertility procedure. The IVF Protection Act seeks to protect IVF nationwide by barring states from receiving Medicaid funding if they implement a ban on the fertility treatment. The bill defines IVF as a procedure where “eggs are collected from ovaries and manually fertilized by sperm for later placement inside of a uterus.” The legislation states that it does not stop states from enacting health and safety protocols within IVF clinics. [...]
In February, Senate Republicans blocked a bill to protect IVF. Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) introduced the Access to Family Building Act, which would have established a statutory right to IVF and other fertility treatments, as well as given physicians the right to provide fertility care without the fear of prosecution. The bill would also have allowed insurance companies to cover the cost of fertility treatments, which can be extremely high. [...] The majority of House Republicans have supported legislation that would threaten fertility treatments on the national level, even though Donald Trump, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, claims he supports IVF. Several other House Republicans, however, have introduced two resolutions that expressed strong support for IVF but had zero legislative power to actually protect the fertility treatment. And the same week the majority of House Republicans endorsed an abortion ban that would threaten IVF, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) introduced a bill that would have safeguarded the treatment.
Republican Senators Katie Britt and Ted Cruz introduce a window dressing bill called the IVF Protection Act that purports to protect In Vitro Fertilization but does nothing to actually protect IVF. These same Senators voted against the Access to Family Building Act, a bill that would have meaningfully protected IVF access. #ProtectIVF

For this week's book rec post, I'm turning it over to you. What are your favorite queer indie books?
Tumblr media
This is only part of my indie collection, in fact most of these belong to my fellow hosts of the Right Here, Write Queer podcast. I have two shelves dedicated to indies, but some of my favorites like the Monstrous Series by Lily Mayne I've only read in ebook form and haven't collected in print. Yet.
I've also listened to a good deal in audiobook format, which over the past couple of years has become my second favorite way to read, with print being the first. The Perilous Court series by Tavia Lark was fantastic, along with Exhale and Bleed by Joel Abernathy and perhaps all my all time favorite, the Fire and Brimstone series by Nikole Knight.
There are so many more, and so many left to read. Which brings me back to my original question. What's your favorite?

Harvey has joined the inaugural Visionary Alliance for the National Hispanic Media Coalition! As The Hollywood Reporter describes:
Alliance members will lend their professional expertise to longstanding NHMC entertainment initiatives such as its Series Scriptwriters Program and Latinx Stream Showcase and also get involved in the nonprofit’s social justice and policy advocacy work.
“NHMC is about representation from the White House to Hollywood,” the coalition’s president and CEO Brenda Victoria Castillo tells THR. “The policies and decisions that are made in D.C. affect Hollywood. The way Hollywood decides they’re going to portray Latinos is the way we’re perceived and the way the public treats us, and it’s a vicious cycle.”
The inaugural Alliance members also include Ismael Cruz Córdova (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power), Wilson Cruz, Rosario Dawson, Diane Guerrero (Encanto, Doom Patrol), Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows), Eva Longoria, Gabriel Luna (The Last of Us), Justina Machado, Encanto producer Yvett Merino, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Danny Pino (Mayans M.C., Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), Aubrey Plaza, Gina Torres, Wilmer Valderrama and Lisa Vidal (Being Mary Jane).
