FAQ - 2024 Update

This is a list of what we expect will be commonly asked questions:

How do I sign up for this? Follow this Tumblr page! That's it. There are no official sign ups. You can also join our Discord server! When you create your works, you'll post to the 2024 AO3 collection and get promoted on our page. Deadlines and themes are constantly revolving so you don't need to sign up by a certain time.

How long does the fest run for? It starts 28 April and concludes 31 August.

How does this work? Every two weeks, we will have a different theme. At the beginning of each theme, we'll give prompts and ideas, but feel free to start working as soon as you want! From there, you create, post, and we share!

Can my work be ship based? Yes, both romantically and nautically. If the work is ship-centric, the POV or focus of the work should be on at least one female character's.

Do I have to write for every theme? Nope! Write for whichever theme(s) you like.

How long does my fic have to be? If it's a written fic, at least 200 words.

Do I have to get a beta? For 2024, we request you use a beta for your fics. Ask the mod(s) for help if you need a beta, or go to our Discord server and ask for a beta there!

What ratings are allowed? All ratings are OK! Mature, explicit, or potentially troubling content MUST be tagged, however. Failure to tag appropriately can mean your fic won't be accepted to the collection.

How do I post with you? Post to the AO3 collection! Once you post there, we will skim it over to ensure it's tagged appropriately and keeps with our themes. Then, it'll be accepted and we'll share it on Tumblr!

Can I write about trans or genderbent characters? What about OCs? Yes to all the above!

Are crossovers okay? Yes, but one or more of the ladies of the Harry Potter series should be the main character or focus of your work.

Are AUs and non-canon compliant stories okay? Of course! Again, as long as the main character or focus of your story is one of the HP ladies, all AUs are welcome.

What if I write all my stories in advance? We're impressed! But the fics won't be shared or revealed on AO3/the Tumblr page till the week it's scheduled for. The earlier you post to the collection, the earlier you'll have your fic posted, but not until the right time for the theme.

What if I submit after the deadline? We operate on "if it's X date somewhere in the world, you can post." That means GMT +12/-12 for any given day.

Can I submit to more than one fest, challenge, or competition? As long as the other fests, challenges, and competitions are OK with it, sure. Post to the other fests first and then add to the Ladies of HP Fest Collection.

you’re such an incredible writer, so i only imagine u read extensively too. i’ve noticed ur ao3 bookmarks are empty, but i’d love to get a list of your favorite titles whether it’s zutara, other fandom or traditionally published works.

I do indeed read a lot. The past few years I have read much less fanfic and have focused on original stuff, but I have actually been able to read a few fics in recent times because my brain didn't want to write, I did have a bit of Zutara burnout I think so no Zutara recs here (yet).

I used to read every pairing under the sun in HP but as I said, haven't read as much fic lately, but two others are Blood & Gold (a Tomione, by the legendary ObsidianPen) and The Wilderness (Luna/Ginny) by speechwriter. If you try nothing else on this list, try The Wilderness. That fic is high art. It blew my entire goddamn mind, my god. I also highly recommend anything by PacificRimbaud (esp. the Paneville)

Scholomance Trilogy by Naomi Novik. I mean, okay, I worship Naomi generally, so I was shocked to discover it took me a while to get into these. Read the first, thought 'meh', came back to it again later, liked it better, second and third proceeded to BLOW me away

NK Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy. In case you want a nice dose of a darker twist on Earthbending and an exploration of prejudice.

Juniper & Thorne by Ava Reid for your Gothic horror needs

Lost Boy and Alice, both by Christina Henry. Dark fairy tale retellings, so you know I'm there. She does them so well.

The Burning series by Evan Winter. It has dragons and a dual-sword wielding badass, in case you need those itches scratched

If you want some good published romance (I tend to like fanfic for pure romance stories tbh so I'm usually pickier here) that has some fanfic vibes, I enjoyed Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert

If you want dark Zutara vibes, my go-to rec and one of my favorite series is The Poppy War trilogy (I will never get over #rinezha)

I wouldn't say I adore The Legendborn Cycle series, but I still like it, you can tell the author has roots in the fan/fanfic scene I think, and again, I think it has some Zutara vibes. Tracy Deonn 100% had to have been inspired by Zuko for her character Sel, I'm convinced. And her take on the Arthurian legend is really unique and creative.

I'm a LOUD AND PROUD HUFFLEPUFF! BADGERS UNITE! Seriously, literally every test I have ever taken, Pottermore or otherwise, good and bad, has put me in Hufflepuff. I am so agressively Puff it's not even funny. My secondary house is Ravenclaw, and my Ilvermorny house is (probably) Pukwudgie.

I currently cannot pick a favorite marauder. I love them all too much. My favorite HP character is probably Ginny Weasley.

I am very much a book fan, not a movie fan. I've read all the books at least 5 times, but have read the Sorceror's Stone and The Prisoner of Azkaban more times than I can count. I have watched the first 3 movies all the way through once and have only seen the later movies in bits and pieces. I don't hate them, but they're not my favorites.

In case you didn't catch it in that last paragraph, I'm American, and nothing I write will be Britpicked. Sorry.

I love Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but I don't watch them on official platforms because JKR sucks. I don't have a favorite character; Newt, Tina, Queenie, and Jacob are all favorites.

While I loved Harry Potter as a kid and have a deep emotional attachment to it, it is a children's book with a LOT of worldbuilding and story issues. I like to use the world and magic as a sandbox to play in, less as a strict rule.

I don't really care too hard on ships. My aroace ass honestly says "the less you focus on it the better," but if you write it well, any dynamic can be good. That said, my usual likes are as follows:

Marauders: wolfstar (I'm basic trash), jily (again, basic trash), peter thinks everyone is hot but never gets to seriously date anyone r.i.p., marlene mckinnon/mary macdonald (although marlene has a fat crush on Dorcas Meadowes that never really goes away), Dorcas Meadowes/Pandora Lovegood, and optional Rosekiller but I get sad if we spend too much time with the Slytherins.

HP: Ron/Hermoine, Ginny/Harry if you like or Ginny/Luna if you don't, dislike Tonks/Lupin but I don't care that much, and I really really don't give a shit about anyone else.

I hate muggle AUs with a burning passion (no shame if you like them, just not my cup of tea), but I do like it when we get to let the wizards use muggle tech and in general be more integrated into the muggle world.

Peter Pettigrew is a marauder and I will DIE on this hill. I will defend this slimy turncoat disaster rat man to the end of my life. Please fight me, I'm excited.

Dramione fanfics, but it's about Theo 😊

First of all I was out for a while, not posting doodles, re-blogging artsy stuff, doing so called reviews of things i was reading or watching etc.. Anyway...First time when I read a fanfic was around 10 years ago (not counting mini stories or smth, but actual fanfic) , I read a modern fantasy and i was left unsatisfied with the development of side characters, they were left uncertain , somehow abounded etc.. Right now the author promised a solo book or two about them, but it's not about it. After that I dropped fanfics for a long while, for me fanart of certain ships were enough to make me smile and feel happy. Now recently, after being in isolation for a loooong while, a came across old but gold, sassy yet classy, traditional, well beloved by many DRAMIONE fanfics. I've never read those, but seeing so many Manacled arts and hype over it ( thank you TikTok for that and many more i guess) i decided to give it a shot. Needless to say i read loooot's of fanfics already, aaand i've noticed this tiny tiny big detail that i just LOVE. THEODORE NOTT let me start from him ! I personally ( at the moment as i haven't read any other universe fanfics yet) think, he is one of the greatest characters adopted by fanfic authors. There is no much info about that character is the original books, and that makes him perfect candidate for side or main character. I still am researching on who/how it's all started, cause feels like everyone took some inspiration originally that later become a fan " canon" , aka fanon character trait for almost ALL the NOTTs and I think it's beautiful 😭 There are other characters like Blaise Zabini, Pansy Parkinson, Greengrass sisters, etc that also share some similar characteristics throughout most fanfics that i've read. I love the fact that authors decided to explore and add smth more to the characters like Lavender, Hannah , Nevile, Luna etc and make their interactions richer, deep, interesting, more fun. One of the things that i liked a lot is that fanon Ginny is THE GIRL we deserved to see in the movies, at least people do justice like that 😂 Overall it feels like Theo really became one of the most beloved characters on the platform, not gonna lie I like him too! I will continue my journey exploring Wizarding World through fan-fiction and see what else i can observer there. At this point i just read Dramione only for Theo 😂 Soon i'll jump on reading smth about him particularly, shipped with Luna probably. But damn after so manny accidental fanfics where he is also part of the story, it feels unnatural to read smth where there is no him at all.

casually scrolling through good ole tiktok today and came across an angel who created an AI cover of Harry Styles and Taylor Swift dueting Cardigan and listened to it about 100 times. and the 101th time i actually listened to it... it made me think of TPFY and realized Cardigan is such a TPFY song. sooo i reread the whole story with Cardigan in the background like a normal person and now im here trying to convince you to listen to it and be motivated to continue writing an amazing fic!!! but even if life is stressful and dont feel like writing .. still listen to it and let your ears be blessed because im having an outer body experisnce. being a swiftie and harry fan is great

Ginny didn’t bother tossing and turning. Restlessness implied the expectation of sleep, and she had no such aspiration. However, she could hardly pop on the wireless and take up knitting with Mr. Curiosity shooting her furtive glances through the shadows.

Keeping her back to Harry's side of the room, she attempted to think with her head, not the thing galloping inside her ribcage, and rationalize the last hour—no, the last twenty-four hours—away.

She’d been here before. So many times. Her entire life felt like a constant state of getting over him. That’s what she’d told herself, at least. From imaginary adventures, to school girl crushes, to something that felt a lot like a first love, Ginny was well practiced in the art of living with feelings for Harry Potter. She wasn’t so self-absorbed to think she was the only one to ever experience the cool sting of heartbreak, but she did think she was a contender for doing it the longest.

Worse, she’d convinced herself that she’d done it. That she’d left Harry, and his lopsided grin, and his piercing stare, and his bloody secrets, in the past.

It was almost laughable how thoroughly she’d deluded herself.

Ginny settled in for a long night of stifling inner turmoil; of shoving aside false memories, and the smell of her Amortentia, and the echo of Harry’s gaze searing into her from across the room. As an alternative to thinking about all that, she instead used the wee hours of the morning to figure out how she was supposed to handle it when he asked again.

Because there was no doubt in her mind that he would ask again. Harry had never been the type of person capable of not questioning. Anything.

But this was off limits.

He wouldn’t know, couldn’t know, but no one was allowed to ask about it. Not Luna or Neville. Not her parents or her brothers. No one.

If I asked, would you tell me what happened?

Standing in the shadow of Hogwarts, she’d thrown the question right back at him. Used his own clandestine tendencies against him as a last, desperate attempt to avoid the conversation that had harrowed her for five years. But now she was shouting herself awake from nightmares, and Ron said Harry had seen her memory of what happened in the changing room. So, of course he’d connected the two. It was the most obvious conclusion.

Ginny, why Ephialtes?

How could she have let this happen?

At the same time, how could she have expected anything different?

She was dreaming about him again, and Harry’s touch still sizzled against her skin, and now love potions apparently didn’t work on her.

As Ginny punched her pillow, something that can only be described as self-preservation kicked in, and it was too easy to fall into her old habits. Almost like greeting an old friend. If the old friend was equal parts solitude, dashed hopes, and sarcasm.

She would be fine.

She always had been. Eventually. And this time would be no different. She would keep thinking it, and saying it until it rang true.

She was fine.

Al principio, la idea de que volvieran a hacer la adaptación de los libros me pareció fatal: me parecía demasiado pronto. Y que era innecesario.

Una excusa más para sacar más dinero a los fans.

Aunque la versión original me encante, y no creo que nadie haga mejor de Severus Snape en la nueva serie, si que me gustaría ver las miles de cosas que no aparecieron en las películas.

La escena de cuando Draco Malfoy le lanzo la varita a Harry Potter, (o sea, esa escena esta grabada, ¿por qué no la pusieron?)

El primer beso de Harry Potter y Ginny Weasley, no la cutre escena que pusieron en la peli original, sino el beso en la sala común después del partido de Quidditch, y por favor, ver un primer plano de la cara de Ron Wesley. Solo pido eso.

En serio, hemos visto como Severus Snape estuvo años, años, queriendo ser profesor de Defensa contra las Artes Oscuras, y para el año que lo consigue, no lo ponen en la película.

El torneo de los 3 magos. Idea: que en el primer episodio de la temporada, se vea alguna con el ministerio de Magia, con los aurores y los directores de magia de los colegios, cuando decidieron que iban a hacer el torneo de los 3 magos.

Luego dividir el resto del episodio en 3 partes, como se enteran los alumnos de Durmstrang y eligen a su participante, como se enteran del torneo en Beauxbatons y como eligen a su participante, y por último, como se enteran en Hogwarts y como van a elegir al participante.

Y ya a partir del secundo episodio como todo el colegio asiste a esa gala de elección, y sale Cedric Diggory Y Harry Potter.

Una buena excusa para ver un poco más de las dinámicas, los uniformes y la ambientación de los otros colegios, antes de salga Hogwarts de nuevo.

Más escenas de Fred y George Weasley haciendo travesuras en el colegio. Y de cómo comenzaron el negocio de artículos de broma Artilugios Weasley. (Sabías que Harry Potter les regalo el dinero que "ganó" con el torneo de los 3 magos, para que empezaran el negocio)

Que la temporada del Prisionero de Azkaban, empiece con un flash back del juicio de Sirius Black y cómo le llevaron a Azkaban. Y. ya que estamos por pedir, que llamen a Alfonso Cuarón de nuevo, que ese director si que sabe transmitir magia en la serie.

Más escenas de partidos de Quidditch.

Escenas en todas las salas comunes de Hogwarts (ver como es la de Ravenclaw y Hufflepuff por lo menos una vez )

Ejemplo: alguna escena de Luna Lovegood con Padma Patil saliendo o hablando en la sala común de Ravenclaw en relación al ejercito de Dumbledore. O alguna escena en la que se ve como los alumnos de la casa Ravenclaw apoyan a Cedric Diggory en el torneo de los 3 magos.

Para acabar, que no pongan la escena de que Neville Longbottom se ha "enamorado" de Luna Lovegood. En serio, NO necesitamos perder el tiempo de esa manera. Mejor que dediquen tiempo a contar como Neville va a visitar a sus padres, que no se acuerdan de quién es él, por poner un ejemplo.

Y bajo ningún concepto, que NO se les ocurra ROMPER LA VARITA DE SAUCO después de la batalla final (en serio, porque hicieron eso en la película). Que suban al despacho de Dumbledore y la dejen ahí (creo que eso fue lo que paso en el libro). Y se marchen los tres con una escena de como se marchan del castillo por última vez.

Sé que no me van a hacer caso, pero esperemos que algo de esto se cumpla.

as if old school fans of Sherlock Holmes didn’t ignore the fact that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wanted the stories to just be over by resurrecting Sherlock in their own stories way before ACD went “YE GOD FINE I’LL BRING HIM BACK JUST STOP COMING TO MY HOUSE AND THROWING YOURSELF AT MY FEET TO SOB ABOUT HOW I LITERALLY RUINED YOUR LIFE”………

as if people haven’t been deliberately making the Cthulhu mythos less appallingly, unnecessarily racist, antisemitic, and xenophobic for literal decades because HP Lovecraft’s bigotry was often Too Much even for his period-typical racist, antisemitic, and xenophobic contemporaries………

as if people in old school Star Trek zines didn’t undermine Gene Roddenberry’s entire idea of the magical space future having humanity evolve beyond our petty bigotries by writing homophobia toward Kirk/Spock (whether explicitly or in how they wrote the relationship/usually manifested as something we in the 21st century would call internalized homophobia)………

as if people haven’t been deliberately undermining the prescriptivist, essentialist, and fundamentally misogynistic take on gender in the Bespectacled Teen Wizard books (which loves to police and shame girls and women for anything about them that gets considered “mannish” or “masculine,” like Rita Skeeter’s ~notably large hands~ and Millicent Bulstrode being beefy and Not Pretty In The Face Department, but also shames and polices girls and women for being “too girly” and “too feminine,” e.g., Cho Chang, Fleur Delacour, Lavender Brown, basically all of the “other girls” whom Hermione, Ginny, Luna, Tonks, and sometimes Angelina Johnson are supposed to Not Be Like) since 15+ years before Joanne publicly revealed herself to be a raging transphobe and open misogynist………

as if one of the most popular wishes in the Hannibal fandom hasn’t always been “Will Graham has a nice day” when the entire point of the series is “Bryan Fuller refuses to let Will Graham have a nice day because he’s decided that actually, Will Graham is horny about his perpetual lack of nice days and about the cannibalistic psychiatrist/performance art serial killer who has dedicated himself to making every day the worst possible day of Will Graham’s life, but like, in a romantic, horny way”………
