I WAS ABOUT TO SAY THIS TO YOU. Incredibly funny that we both have one prior protag who adopted like 37 wayward children. It's so funny. We went back on our bullshit to craft some members of House Trevelyan and Clan Lavellan and now we're back again to craft the two flocks of mage kids and Crow kids.

I know that the Human Commoner and Avvar origins were cut from DAO (Human Commoner because it was a generic and boring Luke Skywalker story, Avvar because it would have necessitated far too many unique assets that wouldn’t have a use outside the origin mission), but it’s weird that all the human PCs in dragon age have ended up being members of the nobility.

Cousland: Second child of a major Teryn, practically one step below the king.

Amell: Originally unknown, later retconned into Kirkwall nobility as of DA2

Hawke: Temporarily embarrassed noble family in Lothering, moves back to Kirkwall.

Trevelyan: another noble family, this time from Ostwick in the free marches.

I love dragon age but I’d love to see more perspectives than that of yet another human noble.

Years ago, when I was creating my canon Inquisitor Alec Trevelyan for Dragon Age Inquisition, I was sent an Anon message saying that since I was a white woman I wasn’t allowed to make make a PoC character nor use a PoC as a facial reference. This was brought up because Alec was technically a inter-racial character (part Marcher, part Antivan) and I use Luke Evans as a facial reference (this was also about the time I changed my Hawke’s FC to Jason Momoa, but that was never brought up?).

I didn’t change anything about those two characters, but it always made me nervous about making any other PoC character or using a PoC face claim in any capacity.

So if you ever wondered why most my characters were white hetero women, thats why. I apparently don’t know the ‘rules’ of fandom and character creation and so to be safe and avoid anyone else coming at me, I stay in my lane. That’s also why the last LGBTQ+ character I created was Alec.

Laura Searles-Mohale is an Artist Developer, Audio Engineer, A&R, Producer, and Editorial Manager. 

She manages Mejiwahn, Dewey.Nothing, amr*, and Ade Kassim. She works as an assistant audio engineer at The Bunker Studios and Astral Sound in Brooklyn, as well as lead audio engineer for live sound at Ambient Church and Performance Space New York in the Lower East Side of NYC. She is also a production associate to Diane Martel and booking agent.

Last year she finished a tour with Alicia Keys as Assistant Director to Diane Martel, contributing to visual content and direction and assisting Anna Trevelyan in styling the tour. Before that, she was positioned as Editorial Director at Marine Snow, A&R at Oda, and live booking agent at FORT Agency. 

She earned a B.A. from Occidental College in Media, Arts, & Culture/Musicology in 2019, and has been working professionally and independently in music and arts since 2015.
