Returning from the new trilogy were Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Domhall Gleeson (General Hux), Lupita Nyong'o (Maz Kanata), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Greg Grunberg (Snap Wexley), Amanda Lawrence (Comander D'Acy), Billy Lourd (Lt Connix) and BB8. There were a lot of voice cameos by Shirley Henderson (Babu Frik), J.J. Abrams (D-0) , James Earl Jones (Darth Vader), Matthew Wood (Cai Threnalli), Andy Serkis (Snoke), Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker), Olivia D'Ablo (Luminara Unduli), Ashley Eckstein (Ahsoka Tano), Jennifer Hale (Aayla Secura), Samuel L Jackson (Mace Windu), Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi), Alec Guinness (Obi-Wan Kenobi), Frank Oz (Yoda), Angelique Perrin (Adi Gallia), Freddie Prinze Jr (Kanan Jarrus), and Liam Neeson (Qui-Gon Jinn). The production designer and art director Norman Reynolds, who has died aged 89, concealed a career in Hollywood blockbusters by telling people he made biscuits for a living. In fact, he played an integral role in bringing to fruition two of the most successful franchises in cinema history. As art director in a team that also included the production designer John Barry, his fellow art director Leslie Dilley and the set decorator Roger Christian, Reynolds helped create the Oscar-winning look of the original Star Wars (1977), which was simultaneously spectacular and lived-in. The impression it gave was of a future that had seen better days.
Hired just before Christmas 1975, Reynolds started work only tentatively until the studio gave the green light to this risky project a few months later. Like everyone involved in the movie, he was often asked whether he had any inkling that it was going to change cinema forever. “Most of us, if I’m brutally frank, were just glad to be working,” he said in 2016. “Nobody had any idea that it was going to be the success that it is.” The realisation began to dawn on him as he watched the director George Lucas shooting the robots C-3PO and R2-D2 as they trundled through the desert in Tunisia. “I thought, ‘This is special. This could be something extraordinary.’”
His services were retained for the first two Star Wars sequels, The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983). On the former picture, indisputably the most impressive of the series, his responsibilities included designing the vast freezing chamber, illuminated with bars of orange light and wreathed in smoke, where Han Solo, played by Harrison Ford, is put into suspended animation at the end of the film. Its director Irvin Kershner, who was initially flummoxed when presented with Reynolds’s bold, wall-less blueprints, called it “the best set in the movie”.
Also memorable was the putrid swamp planet of Dagobah, where Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) receives instruction in the mystical Force from the wizened, gnome-like, pint-sized guru Yoda (Frank Oz). For this dank set, Reynolds flooded the studio floor, planted large quantities of the climbing vine known as old-man’s beard, and had the dry ice machine working overtime.
In Lucas’s capacity as co-creator and executive producer of Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), the first in the Indiana Jones series of adventures paying homage to Saturday morning cliffhanger serials, he recommended Reynolds to the film’s director Steven Spielberg. Among his designs was the priceless statue that causes so much trouble in the prologue—for this, Reynolds painted and modified a souvenir found at an airport gift shop in Mexico – as well as the oversized boulder which almost flattens Jones (Ford again), and the cobwebbed, dilapidated jungle temple through which it rolls at great speed.
“We were a bit short of preparation time, and everyone was running all the time,” he recalled. “We were all swept along. All that came out in the film somehow, it had a freshness to it.” Raiders brought him his second Oscar, as well as his only Bafta, both shared with Dilley and Michael D Ford.
Reynolds was born in London, and studied at art college. His path into films came unexpectedly via a job at a company making illuminated signs. Following a commission to supply signs for The Road to Hong Kong (1962), the sixth and final instalment in the Road to … series of capers starring Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour, he visited Shepperton Studios and was “gobsmacked” by the sets he encountered there. “I was totally hooked, and determined to get into the film industry.”
A year later, he landed a design job at Elstree working on the comedy Come Fly with Me (1963), which was shot largely on a plane inside the studio, with “big puffy clouds made of cotton wool” suspended all around. “I felt that I’d found what I wanted to do,” he said. He then worked for two years on the long-running television series The Saint, starring Roger Moore, before being hired for the James Bond film Thunderball (1965).
He did uncredited art design work on The Battle of Britain (1969) and was assistant art director on Phase IV (1974), Saul Bass’s science-fiction horror film about killer ants. After the success of Star Wars, Reynolds was appointed art director on two further blockbusters, Superman The Movie (1978) and Superman II (1981), and production designer on the disturbing, inventive Wizard of Oz sequel Return to Oz (1985), an undeserved box-office flop.
As executive producer, Spielberg brought him on board for Young Sherlock Holmes (also 1985), directed by Barry Levinson, for which Reynolds built a version of late-19th-century London at Elstree studios, including a frozen replica of parts of the Thames; he also found locations at Eton college, Belvoir Castle in Grantham and Radley college, Oxford. He worked with Spielberg again on the director’s adaptation of JG Ballard’s autobiographical novel Empire of the Sun (1987), set in China during and immediately after the second world war.
Later films included David Fincher’s debut, Alien 3 (1992), with its striking mix of the industrialised and the medieval, and Brian De Palma’s high-tech, big-screen reboot of Mission: Impossible (1996) with Tom Cruise.
Reynolds’s final screen credit was for Bicentennial Man (1999), which starred Robin Williams as a robot who develops human emotions. It was not his most satisfying experience, since he felt that the director Chris Columbus concentrated most of his own energies on the performers and little on the visual elements – a bitter pill to swallow for a man who once called the set “the unspeaking actor”.
He is survived by his wife, Ann, and their three children.
🔔 Norman Reynolds, production designer, born 26 March 1934; died 6 April 2023

I'm curious about how Sam was originally supposed to be the "main" character, but (imo) Dean always kinda felt like the main character, or at least carried the emotional weight of the show more often than Sam. Am I mistaken? Do you know why that is, or have any meta written about that already?
hi hi! I know there's already a bunch written about this, and a lot of it is in my kripke tag right here.
Maybe a good place to start is Kripke's original idea for the show. If you haven't read what I call the Harrison Draft, his original concept for the show, I think it goes a long way toward explaining it. Real quick, it opens on Dean discovering their father dead in the cold open, and then going to find Sam at his graduation from Stanford. The two of them had been raised "normal" by an aunt and uncle, and had always been told their father was insane, and may have even killed their mother. They weren't raised hunting, so Sam believes Dean is also insane for coming back with stories about demons and such. Sam was the audience pov character of "normal person learning about this whole world of monsters" while Dean was the gateway into that world for Sam/the audience.
And that is 100% NOT the show we watched. lol!
I think some of it is leftovers from Kripke's original pitch for the show, too (which you can read right here, and I highly recommend it, it's only 4 pages long), that posits STAR WARS IN TRUCK STOP AMERICA, with Sam as a reluctant Luke Skywalker and Dean as the swaggery Han Solo. And just... lol.
But then the concept of the show evolved into the pilot we did end up getting, and Kripke hired a bunch of other writers to help flesh out the blank slates of these characters, and Jensen and Jared were hired and the writers were like... heck... this Dean chap... he's got unplumbed depths... And he was just so compelling and took us all by the hand and showed us his world. While Sam's early seasons goal was repeatedly attempting to run away from that world.
I mean, granted Sam hated what that world put on him from the start, but honestly so did Dean so like... why did Sam want to escape it while Dean was so determined to keep on saving people and hunting things? It made him compelling. It made him the hero by choice.
And I mean, so much of the early seasons Bad Stuff happened TO Sam, leaving it on Dean to be our connection to it, you know? Sam was the one having visions and feeling less-than-human, and we the audience instead of seeing Sam as "the normal one" and therefore the audience POV character, we were asked to instead stand in Dean's shoes, protective older brother to Sam who was left to try and figure out how to save his brother from all of it.
And that might not be the story Kripke originally set out to tell, but it's what became the foundation of the show from like... episode 2. Definitely by episode 3. Obviously by "main" character here I'm speaking of the audience POV character, which doesn't always fall on Dean's shoulders to carry. They definitely tried to balance that, especially in later seasons by foisting the MoC on Dean, and then the whole possessed-by-Michael arc, making Dean the "problem" that Sam had to solve.
The show is very obviously about both of them, in different ways, and neither of them is "The Main Character" in a way that the show would work if you just, say, killed one of them off, you know? But Dean very quickly became "the more relatable one" to the audience pov. He was Just A Guy™ against Sam's "psychic visions coming true oh gosh am I a Supernatural?!" And one of those things is far more relatable to most viewers, you know?
The show happens TO Sam, and Dean reacts to that by choice.
heck I'm running out of ways to express what's essentially one thought :'D

tag game: (star wars)
ayy thank you for the tag @insertmeaningfulusername :D
1.ride or die ship (your otp): dinluke ofc
2. most annoying ship: i have a few on the annoying list but i won’t mention it here, don’t wanna ruffle any feathers.
3. second favourite ship: hanleia
4. favourite platonic relationship: din and the nevarro gang
5. underrated ship: reyrose tbh
6. overrated ship: ..... never mind
7. one thing i would change in canon: the entire s3 of the mandalorian except for the part where din acquires R5. filoni’s gotta calm down with making and putting his blorbos in everything (it gets tiring when a character has too much going on).
8. something canon did right: making luke and leia twins. luke training grogu. din acquiring the darksaber and the N-1 starfighter. han surviving the carbonite (instead of harrison’s original plan to have han die in esb). the “parade theme” at the end of the phantom menace is similar to the “emperor’s theme” from the original trilogy.
9. a thing i'm proud of creating for the fandom PLEASE BRAG ABOUT YOURSELF I WANT TO SEE/READ YOUR ART: i make some silly incorrect things and personal favorites are this, this, this, this and this
(the last one didn’t get much attention but i had a lot of fun imagining a whole scenario with the four of them including chewie lol)
10. a character who is perfect to me (wouldn't change a thing): original trilogy and mandalorian s2 luke, mandalorian s1-2 din, original trilogy leia and han.
11. the character i relate to the most and why: din and luke, very much
12. character(-s i hate the most and why: (i agree with you, Step) it’s Pong Krell for me too
13. something i've learned from the fandom: the fandom is huge and it’s easy to get lost and overwhelmed. find something you like about the story, then find likeminded friends and simply hangout with your small circle.
14. three tags i seek out on a03: canon-divergence, fix-it, happy ending
15. a song i strongly associate with my otp/ favourite character: i need you guys to trust me on this but just imagine all of your favorite star wars characters dancing to “get lucky”. instant serotonin

Apology ask 22 sounds so Luke or Carrie to me
Luke hummed as the melody floated through his head, frantically scribbling it down so as to not lose it. Hey, might as well make use of his study hall period right?
"Patterson!"
Luke glanced up, seeing Carrie Wilson standing before him, tapping her pricey pink heels, an exasperated expression on her face.
"Hey Carrie, what can I do you for?'
"You can actually show up for the meeting we were supposed to have for our joint History project for one," she replied, her voice chilly enough to freeze plasma.
Luke glanced at his watch and cursed, noting he was indeed supposed to meet up with her... over half an hour ago. "Shit, I got held up writing this song."
"This is why I asked Mr. Reynolds not to pair me up with you, you always pull this shit," Carrie said. "But no, we have to stick to our assigned partners."
"Look, I know I'm a bit of a flake when it comes to school, but the partner thing? I'm sorry, but that was not my fault."
"No, just mine for thinking that you might actually honour your commitment to me and this grade. I'm not Julie, happy to do the work herself and let you take half the credit. Or your boys who drag you along with them towards a stellar D average. You wanna pass, you have to put in the time," Carrie said with a scowl.
"Hey, I get some B's," Luke protested.
"Yeah, in music, because Ms. Harrison likes you, and in English because Mrs. Fowler is a soft touch and lets you write songs instead of essays. But hey, maybe you're okay with being so close to flunking out," she replied with a shrug. "I'm not though. So I'll do my half of the project, pass it in under my name, and whatever grade you get is up to you."
"Well now I'm gonna ace it just to prove you wrong," Luke said with a sneer.
"Or we could do it together-like we're supposed to-and get the A anyway," Carrie said with a roll of her eyes. Luke huffed but waved for her to sit, and they got started.
They ended up getting that A, and continued to do so for every other History project they worked on, because Carrie found that once Luke committed to doing the work, he was actually pretty smart. He was just bored or distracted in his other classes, but that was nothing some assistance from the guidance counsellor couldn't fix.
Luke ended up brining his GPA up by a whole grade come graduation, and he turned to thank Carrie once he found out.
"Totally not my fault Patterson, that was all you. But you can still take me out for a milkshake as thanks," she replied.
"Strawberry?" he asked. "Or bubble gum?"
"Mocha chip," she replied, flipping her hair with a coy smile. Luke felt his heart give a little thump in response, and dashed off after her, wondering how open she'd be to sharing that shake.

🦈 Which character is the toughest to write? (From that meme thing because idk how you do it how you write some of these dorks so well)
Great question and thank you so much for the ask!!
I think it's Han. I love him so much, but he is also so iconic and Harrison Ford IS the character. So I have to really sweat thinking through how he would react to situations. The main cast of the OT is more fleshed out of course where Piett and Veers aren't so it's easier for me to develop them. Blank slates to an extent.
But Han and Luke and Leia---they're harder. Leia has become more easy for me and Luke to an extent. But Han is still a challenge. Which is appropriate when you think about it. ;D
Thank you!

Shock Waves (1977)
"He is dead?"
"Don't you know?"
"Most sincerely, I do not."
"Seemed like he was drowned."
"Then I am afraid it is too late."
"Too late for what?"
"For any of us! You are indeed very stupid. I gave you a chance to save yourselves but you have refused to take it. So be it. Now it is too late."
#shock waves#shockwaves#death corps#nazi imagery tw#american cinema#horror film#1977#ken wiederhorn#john kent harrison#brooke adams#peter cushing#john carradine#fred buch#jack davidson#luke halpin#d. j. sidney#don stout#clarence thomas#richard einhorn#ken pare#on my radar for more than a decade but inexplicably hard to come by in the UK‚ i finally acquired a copy (thank you bf) of this indie#horror cheapie. the delay has possibly hurt my reaction; i feel like seeing this at a younger age would have made it a formative film in my#personal horror canon‚ but as it is the flaws are too notable‚ the limitations too numerous. has the look and feel at times of a student#film‚ but that's undercut by the presence of heavyweights Cushing and Carradine‚ and Adams on the verge of her breakout as a major star#visually it's at times deeply impressive: the shots of zombiefied SS officers rising out of the depths are so well done that you can pretty#much forgive director Wiederhorn for showing the same set up again and again and again. but elsewhere this is a little slow and a little#ponderous. Cushing gives a great late stage performance (my god but the man could throw himself into even the silliest and slightest role)#but alas this is also a flashback horror‚ a format i find particularly frustrating (your tension is necessarily reduced when you know at#the outset exactly who survives and who doesn't....). fun but not the classic I'd hoped for
