I always try to put myself in the place of the shepherds. They've seen it all when it comes to what the night sky has to offer over the years. Must have been quite a sight and sound to freak them out to the point where they were "sore afraid." Pretty wild. I just love this aspect of the Christmas story.

CHRISTMAS S.O.A.P. ~ LUKE 2

Wednesday, 12/25/24

SCRIPTURE:

The angel said, “Don’t be afraid! Look! I bring good news to you—wonderful, joyous news for all people. Your savior is born today in David’s city. He is Christ the Lord." (CEB) ...but the angel said to them, “Don't be afraid! I am here with good news for you, which will bring great joy to all the people. This very day in David's town your Savior was born—Christ the Lord!" (Good News) And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord." (King James) The angel said, “Don’t be afraid. I’m here to announce a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody, worldwide: A Savior has just been born in David’s town, a Savior who is Messiah and Master." (The Message) But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, Who is Christ the Lord." (NASB) But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord." (NIV) And the angel said to them, “Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord." OBSERVATION:

Many folks know this from Linus's "soliloquy" in A Charlie Brown Christmas...

But I remember first hearing it every Christmas Eve, when Dad would open his old RSV and begin at verse 1...

I still remember these two verses the most, though, for what the angels told the commonest of the common folk - the shepherds...

...and from being a shepherd in the Christmas Eve Service at Coral Gables United Presbyterian Church...

"Do not be afraid..." "Fear not..."

"Good news..." Wonderful joyous news..." "Good tidings..."

"Joyous..." "Great joy..." "Joyful..."

"For/to all people..." "Everybody..." "All the people" (and that includes me...)

"Your savior..." "a savior..." (my savior!)

"Born..."

"Christ the Lord" "...the Messiah, the Lord"

APPLICATION:

Verse 15:

Let’s go right now to Bethlehem and see what’s happened. 

Let’s confirm what the Lord has revealed to us

Verse 17:

report what I have been told about this child...

report what I have experienced through Him...

PRAYER:

“Glory to God in heaven, and on earth peace among those whom He favors.” Luke 2:14

Wishing y'all a Merry and Joy-filled Christmas, and Glorifying and praising God for all I have heard and seen... just as I have been told. (Verse 20, "personalized")
