i feel like the very specific way in which luka uses "my saviour" in ruler of my heart has to be some sort of taunt to hyuna.

my theory/headcanon is that as a kid, she'd play the knight in shining armor, "rescuing" luka, her damsel in distress. then later on, maybe when they were both in alien stage for the first time, despite what he'd done, she reached out to him. promised that she'd get them both out of here, again playing the saviour.

ruler of my heart is very clearly meant for hyuna, in some way. and the two-time winner of alien stage, still thoroughly trapped, taunting the woman trying to bring the whole system down with "my saviour", almost looking at her and saying "well, go on, then. come and save me." is a very luka-like thing to do.

i'm just so intrigued by the idea of luka as someone who just. doesn't have the strength to fight against the system he's trapped in. so instead he plays into it, he plays the game to win the game in hopes of keeping himself safe. and hyuna is the polar opposite of that, abandoning the game entirely, actively fighting to change the system. luka sees her rebellion as useless delusion, he thinks there's no saving any of them, he's given in entirely, and so he sees the fact that hyuna hasn't saved him yet as proof of that.

so he taunts her with it. "my saviour, pitiful lady."

Actually DNI with me if you headcannon/believe Lukas is a cutesy twink or is an overly skinny guy

To be clear I’m not targeting anyone or pointing fingers, this has been an issue since the fandom practically started and I don’t really see anyone touch on it. I’m really tired of seeing the “uwu twink” stereotype for Lukas in the community and it’s unfortunate that it’s been around for so long.

Lukas uses a bow as his main weapon, I don’t know if any of yall have drawn back a bow but coming from someone who has: you need a lot of upper body strength. The tension of the bow bending is very strong when pulling back an arrow, and even HOLDING that draw is straining to the arms. Strong muscles in the back, arms, shoulders, and core are key to bending a bow back with ease.

Of course, the amount of strength depends on the amount of draw weight you have on your bow. Draw weight is the amount of force you need to draw back your string to the anchor position. “Why would you need draw weight” You ask? Draw weight affects the speed, accuracy, and overall power of the bow. Too much weight can make you tired or fatigued, too LITTLE weight could make your arrow strength dwindle

Now apply it to Lukas’ bow performance: especially seen in season 2, he is shown to not only draw it back on the regular, but have accurate, strong, and fast shots; able to pierce into the Prismarine Colossal in episode one of season two.

More examples of his strength come from episode 7 of season 1, where you have the choice to either save Lukas or Petra from being chipped. If you leave Petra to be chipped, she comes back at the end and puts up a pretty good fight with Jesse. This exact fight happens if you leave Lukas to be chipped, and doesn’t change in difficulty. Harper even says “your friend looks pretty tough” to both characters. Now if Lukas doesn’t know his full strength or willingly refuses to use it full power is up for debate, but either way he puts up just as good of a fight as Petra does in that episode.

Now I’m not saying to draw/hc him buff asf, but either way he still is a strong character and a lot of people in the community take it for granted or sweep it under the rug.

The mentality people also headcannon onto Lukas is absurd too, sure he’s not a stone cold bastard but he isn’t a do no harm cinnamon roll people like to call him as either.

“he was scared and froze up a lot in the witherstorm episodes!!” I think most of us would piss ourselves if a giant world eating monster was chasing us.

Sometimes it’s as if people make him out to be like nerd from the boyfriend’s comics with how stereotypical they make Lukas. No it’s not a problem to make him queer, what is a problem is feeding into the stereotype that borderline infantilizes a lot of men in the lgbt community just because they aren’t buff or overly masculine.

Lukas is not a knight in shining armor, but he’s not a scared, lost puppy either. He’s a man who enjoys literature and is a “do no harm but take no crap” kind of guy. His character has grown over the episodes and it’s really sad to see people misinterpret characters like him (looking at you radar infantilizers)

Again, not pointing fingers, this is a problem that’s been around for years and I’m getting real tired of seeing the jesskas ship like this

I’m very late to the Bayonetta shipping discourse, but in a fandom dominated by scorned BayoJeanne shippers, I wanna throw my hat in the ring and say why I prefer BayoLuka.

Put simply, I think it’s really rare to see a canon m/f ship where the woman is unabashedly the cool dominant one in the relationship. Think about how many pairs there are of fangirls swooning after big, burly superhero men, damsels rescued by knights in shining armor, or an action couple with similar power levels (but, y’know, the guy is The Main One™ of the two). There’s nothing wrong with those types of ships, but you can’t deny that they’re everywhere.

That’s why I like Bayonetta and Luka’s dynamic so much. They’re unabashedly not that.

Bayonetta is an angel slaughtering powerhouse, child of prophecy, last of her kind. She punched god herself into the sun. Luka is a guy with a grappling hook.

Whereas Bayonetta literally dances around her opponents in a fight, graceful and effortlessly as she beats these divine beings to a pulp, Luka can’t help but trip over himself or slam headfirst into a brick wall. When Luka threatens to “expose” Bayonetta in the first game, she responds by cheekily flirting with him or saving his life from an unseen threat. Bayonetta literally controls her clothes while Luka’s scarf often slaps his face in the wind.

Cheshire, the pet name she gives him, both solidifies that she sees him as cute and harmless as a kitten and implies he has more sentimental value to her than she initially lets on. It was the name of her favorite childhood stuffed animal, after all.

For the record I have nothing against BayoJeanne. It’s an okay ship. They just don’t have that special draw for me

What's that? Someone is outright asking me to dunk on Félix? Don't mind if I do.

Alya suffers from the same problem Luka does, except she actually gets more screen time and the writers keep up the illusion of utilizing her for longer. Alya has a lot of interesting building blocks that actually got used in the earlier seasons, like how her reporting is such a big motivator and a great way of getting her in the thick of things for the episode’s plot, and how her honest nature can be in conflict with her desire for the big scoop. She also has as much of a drive for justice as Marinette does, but she’s more balanced about it. The foundation is so solid, yet nothing really got built out of it.

I would have loved more focus on her reaction to getting to be an actual superhero, and on her relationships with her co-heroes. (Her and Nino getting to know each other’s secret identities in their second outing as heroes was such a wasted setup.) Alya has a lot of stuff going for her that didn’t get utilized properly, but that the fandom latched onto, fortunately.

Then she gets turned into the writers’ vehicle for reminding the audience that MARINETTE TOTALLY LOVES ADRIEN OKAY NO MATTER HOW MUCH SHE DENIES IT ALYA KNOWS THE TRUTH BECAUSE THE WRITERS DECIDED SHE KNOWS IT.

Hot take, even many Miraculous fans who don’t rag on Félix like I do think his characterization is inconsistent at best. This walking, talking plot device has no character, only roles the writers have him play, which is really weird for a show that at least tries to have consistent characterization and motives for every other character. With Félix they can’t even settle on whether or not he’s a villain, changing his motives to be more (arguably) altruistic every time he shows up. It’s weird they manage to be so consistent on this with Lila and Chloé, but Félix just veers straight from selling the kwamis into slavery (while apparently being a slave himself so his entire character is just slavery now) into being Kagami’s consolation prize love interest and knight in shining armor.

It’s hard to say how the story treats him, to be honest. Look, it’s not like canon tells a good story with him, but it’s not like he’s neglected or mistreated by the writers either, considering he gets more importance in the narrative of 'Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir' than CAT NOIR. He’s the writers’ pet, clear and simple, he always gets his way and gets away with things, but it’s never in the service of having him do anything really that interesting, specifically because there’s no reason the stuff Félix does has to be done by him specifically, because he never gets any repercussions. His role in any episode outside of his first appearance could be played by anyone or any other plot device.

He didn’t get beaten up enough in the show proper. I am willing to make the difference. Put them up, feather twerp.

   What an–odd question. His father trying to put him into an arranged marriage of some sorts. Like Luka was a prince that mattered enough he was worth selling off. He supposed, amongst Vampires, Purebloods were a bit of Royalty. The coven looked up to him quite a bit, and eventually if something ever happened to his father, he would be the head of the coven in Abarith. He already kept them in line. 

   But Luka is not valuable enough in that regard for such a thing to matter, nor would John do it. It seemed he needed to explain a little bit about his family situation to Rikuto. 

   “Do you still have the locket I threw at you?” In the nightstand, wrapped in a very soft looking cloth, Luka did find the locket he had thrown at Rikuto. The little object that had caused him so many problems, that had frustrated him because of what it seemed to mean to these people. He dumped it out onto Rikuto’s chest and gently folded the cloth back up, setting it off to the side. Still comfortably resting over top of the other, he cracked the locket open and spun it around in his hand to show Rikuto the picture. 

   “My mother was named Lacina, my father is John Reid. The owner of the company that makes Blood Tablets.” Something Rikuto did know. “My father was not–always entirely out of his mind. When I was little he was very loving, he’d tell me all sorts of stories about stealing my mother away, like a knight in shining armor. She found the entire thing very funny.” He has fond memories of his childhood. “They were very deeply in love and mated.” 

   His father was at one point a good person. 

   “When the Witches burned our house down, when my mother died, my father only managed to rescue me from the fire. And the stress of losing her seemed to break something in him. The man I deal with now, he’s nothing like the one I remember.” The stress of losing ones mated partner, their bonded, he’s seen it first hand in a man who used to be so gentle and loving. Who used to be everything to him.    

   The locket is snapped shut and he set it back down on top of Rikuto’s chest, staring at the odd crest on the back that had caught their attention long ago. “My father enjoys isolating me now, in keeping everyone away, and torturing those that try to get close to me. The idea that he would attempt to marry me off–he probably thinks he’ll lose that control.” To some extent, he’s probably not wrong either. 

   A gentle shake of his head and Luka sighs, moving to get off of Rikuto now. This was why he shouldn’t want to be anywhere near Luka where John can get to him. “I have it under control enough.” To survive, at the very least.

The carefree smirk fell into a more somber frown. "I don't want that...," he muttered under his breath. Unless it was by Luka's own request to put distance between them like that, Rikuto had to refuse. He didn't care about Luka's father or any dangers that the Noble faced to his safety. He'd only be able to separate them on Rikuto's cold, dead body.

"I don't care about any of that. If you don't want me to go, then I won't. I'll stay right here -- with you." Something that should have been obvious at this point, but he could understand Luka's hesitations. He didn't know the extent his father had gone to keep Luka obedient, but it boiled his blood to think how scared it made Luka. He shouldn't have to be worrying over Rikuto's safety like this all because of his own family.

Not that he couldn't relate, however. His own father had proved to be a thorn in his side more than once -- especially with his current ties to the kingdom's Princess.

Luka tugging at his hands brought him back to reality as he pulled him atop the bed and urged him to lie down -- all of which he did without a fight. Already feeling much better after the blood he'd ingested earlier, he encouraged Luka to get comfortable and place as much of his weight atop him as he desired. Rikuto could handle it -- it wasn't as if Luka was heavy by any means anyway.

"Do better than you?" A brief look of contemplation crossed his face before he gave a shake of his head, placing a kiss atop Luka's head. "No, sorry. I don't think that's possible." Because he vowed, here and now, to never do such a thing. He wanted to protect Luka, not hurt him.

Allowing Luka to poke and prod at him as much as his heart desired, he simply took to resting his hands, again, atop the other's hips. His eyes watched Luka with a warmth in his gaze reserved for few others. It was cute, watching him tend to Riku with such care. Of course, he was still on the topic of biting. His teasing nature returned for a moment. "For your sake or mine?~"

Tracing his fingers along the fabric on Luka's waist, he continued. "But, Luka, I have to ask... You know about marriages of convenience. Who's to say your father won't try and rope you into one against your will? Can you really say you'll be able to deny him?" Riku would understand, of course, but it wouldn't heal the sting that came with losing him. Who knew just what tactics his father would resort to just to spite him.

I HAVE A VERY BAD FEELING ABOUT THIS!

We may have been granted precious seconds of supposed Marichat goodness but after reading this...

There are so many things that can actually go wrong.

Scenarios: - Tom & Sabine try to start breakfast on a happy note, but as it drags on, and they start asking questions, they may realize that this relationship isn't what it seems.

- Chat Noir starts getting nervous, since he can't reveal too much info he knows about Marinette (since, technically, they aren't supposed to know each-other outside of the few akuma saves Chat did). So Chat starts stuttering, trying to think of things to say but not too much and Tom and Sabine get a bad feeling like he doesn't know Marinette much at all.

- When they ask Marinette questions about Chat Noir or their relationship, she doesn't actually know what to say, maybe she even gets caught in trying to lie and save face, but maybe it doesn't sit right with Chat and he tries mending the situation with the truth?

- It says here, "...draws negative thoughts from a concerned baker...". So, Tom will most likely get akumatized next, since he feels like Chat Noir doesn't appreciate or love his princess like she deserves to. Maybe he will target Chat Noir and Marinette will have to save him. Maybe she will try to do it as Ladybug, but fail, and then she will detransform (somewhere safe) and try to reach her father through feelings. Maybe Tom will even resist Hawkmoth, maybe it will give CN an opening to shatter the akuma and LB can purify it later.

- Tom and Sabine find out Marinette lied, that she didn't have a relationship with Chat Noir. They will queation her, maybe reprimand her for playing with someone's feelings, maybe tell her to apologize to the poor boy and clear things between them.

- Marinette would wait on her balcony to catch sight of him, maybe even call him through her yoyo to get him near her address, and when he sees her, she begs him (as Marinette) to stay and talk.

- Cue the "Why did you lie? I thought you said you hated liars." talk from Chat. Marinette will try to defend herself without revealing the real reason why she lied.

- Maybe Marinette will catch on to what CN actually said. The "I thought you said you hated liars" part. How would he know that? She never told him that directly, but she did tell that to Adrien.

- Cue all the times Adrien behaved weirdly or said him and CN occasionally saw each-other on the street...etc.

- "Wait...Chat Noir..could it be you're...you're Adrien?" (MAYBE SHE WON'T BE A DENSE POTATO!)

- NOW CN gets all nervous, tries to evade the question, maybe tries to lie too.

- Maybe Marinette will feel betrayed or thinking CN lied too. Maybe they will part on bad terms, with Marinette in her room thinking of what happened. Adrien laying in bed, trying to understand what had happened.

- If Marinette is upset, who will she turn to? Chat Noir was a no-go, Adrien seemed preoccupied with Kagami and Alya with Nino. So who does she turn to? (This will be a stretch but...)

THAT'S RIGHT FOLKS! LUKA COUFFAINE!

What if this will be where Luka gets to shine (in another episode or two) and Marinette spends more time with him? He helps her heal slowly, she gets to know him better, maybe he will notice her crush on Adrien is slowly fading (because she doesn't talk about him as much as she used to) and he starts getting a bit more comfortable with the idea of expressing his feelings more to her?

Looking back, my straight ships of my formative years can be divided into two categories:

For all of the dismissal in the statement, there's no venom in his tone. If Python lost himself to jealousy every time Forsyth looked like he had a puppy crush, their time in the Deliverance would've been far more tumultuous.

"And if he comes around, I'd be glad to let him have a turn with our handsome red knight as well." He winks, the alcohol in his veins moving his playful impulses faster than his sense of reason can rein them in. "If he'd like, that is."

"Why the long face, stud?" Python's arm hovers above Lukas's body as he ambles up to his side, the orange blooms bursting from the knight's eccentric outfit creating a barrier from direct touch. Nimble fingers find their weak points, dancing along the thin branch-like pieces that weave down his friend's shoulder.

"Can't say I'm a fan of being a plaything for some sentient sack of rocks myself, but there's not much we can do about it. May as well enjoy the party, yeah?"

His smile grows coy as his hand ceases its two-step and glides up and off from Lukas's shoulder to offer an outstretched palm instead.

"You could try a dance, if you'd like."

“I’m glad to see you’re having fun.” Perhaps too much fun, Lukas thinks, but it’s as Python says. There’s nothing to be gained in worrying about things beyond their control. And even he doesn’t want to be stuck at the bar for the rest of the night. Dancing it is then.

When Lukas takes his hand, he notices the coy grin on Python’s face. Too much fun indeed, he thinks with a heavy sigh. “That’s quite the smile. You better wipe that off your face before Forsyth sees and jumps to conclusions.”

I share my fears with Anon regarding writers making Luka hate Marinette. He's literally the only one she has left who is supportive and doesn't give her shit for anything [Alya I love you but what the hell was that with "oh you're just jealous of Lila lol"]. Without him, she will be relying on Adrichat /only/, and despite Astruc trying to shove LS down our throats, this is the last thing we need. She doesn't need an useless knight in shining armor, she needs a hug.

For real. Like, I can't bear the idea of it. Luke has been the only character to consistently unconditionally support Marinette throughout his time on the show. And I love Alya, I really do, but she's not written as a particularly great friend.

Marinette doesn't need the "love" and "support" of an overgrown toddler, she doesn't need or deserve to be Adrichats babysitter, she deserves so so much better.

And it's such a depressing thought, knowing that Marinette has no escape from Adrien, because shes a fictional character and her destiny is decided. Regardless of what's best for the story, for Marinette, or for Adrien, Adrinette will happen. Like the ever approaching threat of the sun exploding.

The newest argument of some Lukanette antis is that Marinette could never be her true self around Luka because he makes her fragile (stopping her LB side from showing) and likes that bc he has a hero complex.... I wish I was joking...

I genuinely think these people are watching a whole different show because what??? Did they miss how Marinette’s bravery in Captain Hardrock was one of the first things that attracted Luka to Marinette in the first place? Or how they backed each other up and stood up to Bob Roth together in Silencer?? Or how well Viperion and Ladybug worked in Desperada???

Just because Luka allows Marinette to be vulnerable around him, it doesn’t mean he sees her as a damsel in distress! If anything, it shows that she can show ALL sides of her to him and he will still love and support her.

And don’t even get me started on how they say only Adrien can fully see Marinette, when she literally cannot string two sentences around him without messing up. Or how Chat is constantly ignoring Ladybug’s feelings in favor of his own, or needlessly jumping in front of her to be her “knight in shining armor”.

Sorry for the ridiculously long Ask but this genuinely pissed me off and I need a fellow Lukanette stan to share my frustrations.

And no, don’t apologize, because you are absolutely right. I don’t know what show they’re watching but it definitely isn’t this one. Apparently Ladybug crying to Chat Noir is “proof that LadyNoir is real and there is a God” but Marinette crying to Luka means that she’s fragile and Luka wants her to be dependant on him.

Also, just to add to the point on “Silencer,” did they also miss how Marinette outright disobeyed Luka to go stand up to Bob Roth herself? It’s not like she wanted to and then backed down when Luka tried to lead her away; she brushed him off and then immediately went to face Bob. She listens to Luka but she isn’t dependant on him.

If Luka had a hero complex, wouldn’t he have left the locker in “Desperada” and gone out of the sewer to go face Desperada himself after Ladybug told him not to? Are these people really mistaking “Luka is a selfless person who values others over himself” for a hero complex???

Makes absolutely zero sense to me.

Furthermore, if we want to talk about keeping Marinette “fragile,” what about Marinette folding to Adrien’s whims in both “Malediktator” and “Chameleon,” both things that went TERRIBLY for her? Because of Adrien, she trusted Chloe with the bee which led to all of the heroes she picked getting outted, and letting Lila continue lying led to her expulsion which was only reversed because Adrien “we’re in this together” Agreste essentially bribed Lila with his continued friendship and a photoshoot with him to get Marinette back into class, then didn’t tell Marinette about it so Marinette briefly believed that Lila was doing it because she’d finally come to her senses.

And, if we wanna talk about Marinette being “fragile,” then let’s talk about how Adrien cripples her emotionally and has led to some of her worst mistakes/embarrassments, and how Chat laughs her off and calls her anger “cute” while she’s busy picking up his slack, the narrative forcing her to just go numb to it because there’s nothing else she can do at that point.

I agree with this a thousand times over. I WANT more lore about the lumen sages! Give us a lumen sage bayonetta! Fuck, why couldn't Viola have some lumen sage abilities? Give us a Madama Butterfly arc where she fucks off to who knows where and has a side quest. Give the other bayos more screen time and don't kill all of them off! Mix in some mutual pining between jeanne and bayo! If you're gonna make one of the bayos fall for luka, at least make their personalities very different? Maybe instead of twist revealing at the end she's a different bayo (possibly mini ceraza), you make the og bayo and new bayo work together from the start??? Make all three bayos work together?? We know time travel exists! There could be a whole plot there that ties in the eyes of the world from the previous games, maybe the need memory loss bayo's left eye or some shit??? ALSO DON'T MAKE LUKA A MAIN CHARACTER??? HE'S NOT A KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR??? HE'S A DUMBASS WITH A MASSIVE EGO, DON'T SUDDENLY MAKE HIM A GENTLEMAN WHO HAS TO SAVE BAYO, SHE CAN HELP HERSELF. MAYBE THE LUKA FROM THE 2 GAME AND YHE NEW LUKA COULD HAVE SOME WEIRD ARC TOGETHER?? that would at least be interesting and could show us how different the lukas are from each other so we aren't completely gutted when one gets with the new bayo. Am I the only one who wanted more out of Bayonetta 3. Like, fuck the side chapters and the Jeanne spy segments. I wanted the complete Demon roster from all the Bayonetta games with masquerades to match, give me a Diomedes masquerade thats just a sword unicorn centaur. Give me a Bayonetta or Viola variant that was contracted to Alraune, maybe they went crazy and killed their family. Give me a castle defense Deadly Sin ritual segment between Bayonetta and French Rosa, the clock tower could have become the demonic city Pandemonium and Alraune could have become a queen in a giant Raffelsia palace. Demon Slave is so underutilized maybe make a segment where you have to utilize Alraune's ability to control plants to make paths for progression or segments that are easier with the clock tower's witch time ability. Give me Rodin stopping Bayonetta before the final fight and telling her that he will help her for the final fight and just giving her his weapon and then she summons him along with a Jeanne and Rosa variant who had lived instead of Bayonetta during the witch hunts and they all dance together attacking Singularly at the same time. Give me Alternate Bayonettas with compelling stories, making their deaths all the more tragic. Fuck the heteronomative ending give me Jeanne and Bayonetta hugging after all is said and done and just when you think they aren't going to they kiss and tell each other that after everything they've been through that it will take more than some AI with a God complex to keep them apart. Fuck the prequel, just give us a chapter where Viola is wandering through the Avalon Forest herself with an adult version of the Origins Bayonetta (who could be married to Lukaon) maybe she has to Deadly Sin Cheshire. Give Singularly actual motives and make them a looming threat, instead of just "I'm going to kill all the Bayonettas!" "Why?" "BECAUSE I FUCKING CAN!" Give me a Deadly Sin fight between Kraken (Maybe called Cassiopia) and Queen Butterfly. Give all the demons that she summons a Deadly Sin form or variation. Give me a final summon where all the variants (maybe some are Lumen Sages) come together, rip out their hearts, and summon Hecate as a sort of embodiment of magic and it's ultimately chaotic nature within the trinity. And she just fucking removes Singularly from reality instantly erasing the damage they did, but all the Bayonettas remember what happened and Viola can't return home so she's just adopted by Bayo and Jeanne. Just give us more than a half baked story with no passion in it. Give me emotion and passion, not a story that has some decent concepts and macanics. Basically Bayonetta 3 wasn't worth the $60 it cost and it should have been more than a half baked concept.

I think that's a perfectly fair question! Lukas has had many ups and downs throughout the series. In my opinion he reached his lowest point in "Divine Executioner", and while he does have his moments of weakness here and there, he's been on an upward trend ever since that story.

I think the events in that story made him realize that his depression wasn't just hurting himself, but the people he loves too. That was the kick in the ass he needed to start taking his recovery seriously. If your vibe is so dark and terrible that you attract the Divine of Tears herself to you...yeah, it's time for serious intervention. Lukas doesn't care about himself, but he does care about his friends, even if he struggles to show it.

The theme of that story was "darkness attracts more darkness". Lukas realized that the only way to stop spiraling was to turn and face the light, make positive changes in his life even if he didn't believe in them, and then more light would eventually follow. Now, as of the story "Pig Bait", he's finally starting to reap the seeds of change he sowed. He's able to open up and be more honest about his feelings, and in return, he's able to build more positive relationships with others.

So what kept Lukas going before then? I would say hope. He had a lot of hope when he was younger because he hadn't experienced much of the world beyond Uekoro. His mother was awful to him, but he had hope that he could leave her and her abuse behind one day. So he fled Uekoro with his lover Itanya...then Itanya died, and to add insult to injury, Lukas was enslaved by bandits shortly after. This enslavement lasted weeks and his hope was quickly dying. Towards the end of "The Perfect Shot", he was ready to give up and kill himself because his escape attempts kept failing and he saw no other way out of his horrible situation.

Then just in time, Evan arrived. Like a knight in shining armor, this random mercenary arrives and rescues Lukas from the bandits. Evan expected nothing in return and extended his hand in friendship. It was the only kindness Lukas had known since he lost Itanya, and just like that, his hope was restored. He once again believed that he could have love and happiness, that he could build a life worth living after all.

Lukas and Evan developed a very, uh, "passionate" relationship. They loved eachother just as much as they hated eachother. They brought out the very best and the very worst in eachother. This passion kept Lukas trucking onward because he cared about Evan, though he was becoming jaded and cynical about life the more he experienced it. He buried his emotions instead of confronting them because confronting them hurt too much, and his mental health began a long, slow decline. He was gradually losing his hope again.

This decline finally came to a head in "Divine Executioner", but the story "Allmother's Gift" is where we see Lukas really making an effort to turn things around. He agrees to see a therapist, and this bit of dialogue between them says a lot:

  The doctor hushed him. She paused, letting him gather his composure before she added, “That elven girl must have been very important to you.” “Itanya was everything to me,” [Lukas] replied quickly. “She was the only thing that made my miserable life worth living!” “And yet you persist,” grinned Dr. Jan, steepling her knobby fingers under her chin. Lukas took another deep breath and sighed, “Barely. I don’t know what keeps me clinging on like this. I guess I’m just waiting for something to change, but it never does. Look at me, I’m in my forties now! Still bitching and whining about things that happened decades ago! Decades! Gods, what’s wrong with me?” “There is no need to judge yourself,” the doctor advised. “How can you overcome your pain when no one has taught you how? Clearly your parents were not fit for the task, but that is why I’m speaking to you now. Forties—bah! You’re a child in the eyes of the cosmos! It’s never too late to conquer your demons.”

Lukas has depended heavily on others in the past to keep him going. Evan, as well as his other friends, have always supported him even at his worst. Now he's trying to love himself enough to stand on his own two feet and support himself.

TL;DR: Lukas is tethered to this mortal coil by the power of good ol' hope and friendship. He doesn't really want to die, he just doesn't want to hurt anymore.
