Via @rawgram2011: Performance of artist Satch Hoyt in the museum La Tertulia as part of his residency at @lugaradudas in #Cali #Colombia. Hair Combing Cycle 1530 Hair combing as a symbol of colonial history detanglement Hair is a cultural signifier, the politics of black women’s hair have long been of major interest in the discussion around the notion of blackness. Hoyt's performance re-enacts the daily grooming ritual performed in homes by African and African Diaspora mothers on their young children and on each other. This symbolic, poetic intervention of cross generational women unified in a cyclic formation to create a real time musical composition, is a defiant rebuke on the centuries of white supremacist, colonial and neo-colonial conditioning notions of beauty imposed on black subjects. The performance is a multi layered action, a cross-semination of grooming and a form of oral knowledge distribution, the passing down of the codes from mother to child. The sonic antiphony of the comb through the curls is the detanglement of entangled chapters in traumatised colonial slave histories from African continent to the transnational African diaspora. Eliana Otta (Lima, 1981) is a visual artist and Master in Cultural Studies (PUCP, Peru). She has shown her artistic work in cities such as London (ProjectSpace, TATE Modern), New York (Jewish Museum), Barcelona (Tasneem Gallery), Cali (lugaradudas). She as the curatorial team coordinator that organized the permanent exhibition of Lugar de la Memoria, la Tolerancia y la Inclusión Social. She is a member and co-founder of the independent space Bisagra and she was a member of La Culpable and La Casa Rosa. She is currently a PhD Candidate at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.

Cuerpo en desalojo (o cuando entendí por qué somos un “lienzo en blanco”)

El lienzo en blanco es un cuerpo vaciado

Un otro genérico que se bautiza de tanto en tonto

Así se titula a un otro

así comienza el fin del “lienzo en blanco”

con un nombre que “mata la tela”.

 Pero puede pasar como pasó por ejemplo, una noche con un hombre con nombre que llamaré simplemente “onvre”.

 Esa noche el recorrido de la luz, que entraba muy apenas por la cortina, dibujaba el hueso prominente de su frente y dejaba ver unos brillitos chacones en sus cejas espesas.

Me deslicé con la luz que bajaba por sus párpados hasta inyectarme en su pupila, un negro absoluto y sin retorno.

Desde ahí hacia afuera, vi el iris sin distinguir ningún color

y vi como el blanco del ojo o el ojo entero perdía sus bordes.

Ya no era su ojo.

O eran ahora dos ojos colonizados por una mirada ajena.

una mirada familiar, anterior y con otro nombre.

                                                                                  (que estuve a punto de decir)

 No eres tú – Interrumpí

 Intentando como un ciego, reconocer con mis manos lo que mis ojos no alcanzaron a reconocer, porque ese cuerpo descolocado salió tan rápidamente por la puerta, que no encontré nombre con el cual llamarlo.
