i think we as a fandom need to make more jinbe and luffy fics and content about marineford,, guys jinbe was there. jinbe is the only member of the crew who genuinely saw how awful marineford really was, jinbe was the only one to see luffy wake up afterwards and flip out about ace, JINBE WAS THE ONLY ONE TO SEE LUFFY DOUBT HIMSELF AS PIRATE KING. GUYS.
i find it hard to believe that after two years all the trauma luffy went through just fuckin, went away? didnt oda confirm that luffy has nightmares or somethin? luffy had to have someone, and as much as a great support system they are, the crew wasnt there, they didnt see what luffy did- they didnt see his pain, or the fact jinbe had to literally carry luffy out of the battlefield, jinbe did and was.
im only on fishman island, so i might be missin somethin here but, really do you see my vision?

Heya! I saw your post and thought I would take advantage of this opportunity. If it's too late or don't like this request, then nevermind.
I wanted to ask for a Luffy x female s/o headcanons or scenario of a normally easygoing and playful s/o was worrying over Luffy's wellbeing over the two year training, and after reuniting with everyone, they were enjoying their alone time and s/o was relishing in his presence and enjoying their long overdue cuddle time. Possibly her comforting him? It doesn't have to be angsty, it can just be her giving needed fluff and cuddles or something. That boi seriously needs hugs. (Little spoon Luffy is adorable) Please and thank you and take care of yourself! :)
Thank you for the request! and you take care of yourself aswell! Also you are so right about little spoon luffy 🥺

After you woke up on a new island you tried to find your way around, tried to find a ship to get back to sabaody archipelago. You wanted to get back to the crew, back to luffy.
As you were finding your way around the island, you found a town, so you asked around to see if anyone had a ship or could take you back to sabaody. You had found a kind person that would take you but you had to wait until their husband came back with the ship.
After a couple weeks you had read the newspaper, seeing luffy on it, deciding to stay for the two years.
“Are you ready to leave?” The kind woman had asked.
“Actually I think i’m going to stay a bit longer. Is that okay?” You replied.
“You are welcome to stay as long as you like.” She said.
Over the two year period you trained you hardest to fet stronger. You also worried about how luffy was doing, how did his brothers death affect him, how was he doing, what kind of training he might be doing. You couldn’t wait to see him and the crew again.
It had come time to meet up with the crew again, you said your goodbyes to the kind people who brought you back to sabaody and set off, following the vivre card to shakky’s bar.
After meeting with the crew on the ship, you all talked about the training and what has happened over the two years. Once everything calmed down you went to your and luffy’s room, luffy following close behind.
As soon as you two entered the room, luffy wrapped his arms around you, bringing you into a hug.
“I missed you so much.” Luffy whispered, burying his face in your neck.
“I missed you too.” You hugged him back tightly.
“Can we cuddle, I wanna be held by you.” Luffy asked.
You giggled softly. “Of course we can.”
You two laid down facing each other, pulling him closer to you, playing with his hair and leaving soft kisses along his face. He had a soft smile resting on his face, happy and content with being in your arms again.
He talked about his training with you, and about the war at marineford, along with how he got through it all. You comforted him when he talked about his brother, holding him closer and kissing his forehead. He cherished moments like these where he got to be with you and relish in your sweet touches.

im pretty proud of this one, luffy deserves the world 🥺

Hello author! Can I ask for K and L for Sanji/Ace please. (Fluff) thankyou!
Fluff Alphabet - Portgas D. Ace
Tumblr media
a/n: hiya!!!! Here is ace’s fluff alphabet! 💗I know you only asked for K & L but I hate only answering a few letters of these at a time LMAO 💀ALSOOOOO I’m going to Sanjis at some point too, because I got a lot more angst asks than fluff so yahhhh! Anywayssss hope you enjoy<3333
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A-Activities (what do they like to do with their s/o? How do they spend their free time with them?)
Ace absolutely loves to pull pranks on you AND he loves to pull pranks with you. Once a month you actually have an all-out prank war against one another where even the crew fear that they will be caught in the middle of it.
Oh, and true to his character, the two of you spend a lot of time eating food together. It’s very difficult for any normal human being to eat anything close to the amount Ace eats, so more often than not, it’s you staring at him in awe while he scoffs down another plate of food.
B-Beauty (what do they admire about their s/o? what do they think is beautiful about them?)
He finds your smile to be one of the most beautiful things he’s ever seen, it’s even more beautiful when the smile is directed at him. The moment you smile at him everything else in the world seems to melt away. Ace does everything in his power to bring a smile to your face, because when you smile everything else seems to fall into place. (SO CLICHÉ I KNOW BUT IT’S TRUE!)
C-Comfort (how would they help their s/o when they feel down/have a panic attack etc.?)
His go to method of comfort is cuddles. He just wraps his arms around you and gives you lots of forehead kisses. He’ll say all these kind things about you and ask what you need from him. If you’re not sure, or if you don’t feel like talking, he’ll patiently wait until you’re ready to talk.
D-Dreams (how do they picture they future with their s/o?)
In every possible future he envisions, you are there. To Ace, there is no future unless you are with him. It’ll be the two of you living life to the absolute fullest, taking it day-by-day.
He isn’t too keen on having (biological) children as he doesn’t want them to be burdened with the blood of Gol D. Roger.
E-Equal (are they the dominant one in the relationship or rather passive?)
He tends to take the more dominant role in the relationship. It’s just his natural personality that seeps through, it’s truly not intentional. He’s confident and loud so there’s not really any way you can’t not listen to him. However, if you were to voice any opinions or comments, you’ve got all his attention!
F-Fight (would they be easy to forgive their s/o? How are they fighting?)
I talk about his fights with his s/o a little in his angst alphabet. Here it is again!
Fights with Ace, although they don’t happen often, can quickly get out of hand. He’s stubborn and his inability to accept that he’s not always right can cause a minor disagreement to escalate into an all-out fight. On a few occasions you have argued about him never turning his back on an opponent.
Your fights tend to be followed by cooldown time. Things can get quite heated (no pun intended) so you need some alone time and space to breathe. After that though, you comeback together and apologize.
G-Gratitude (how grateful are they in general? Are they aware of what their s/o is doing for them?)
Ace felt unloved and unwanted by the world growing up (save for Luffy and Sabo, oh and Dadan), so it was quite the change to experience the unconditional love you provided him. He will forever be grateful for what you have done for him, in fact, he’s so grateful about it that he can never shut up about it! Much like how he gushes about his ‘stupid kid brother’ to the Whitebeard Pirates, Ace will also never shut up about you to anyone he talks to. Your name somehow always makes its way into any conversation he has.
H-Honesty (do they have secrets they hide from their s/o? Or do they share everything?)
The only secret he kept from you was that he was the son of the Pirate King. He was scared that once you knew, you would view him differently. But over time he was able to see that that would never be the case. So, after telling you that, he never kept anything from you ever again. Ace actually finds sharing secrets with you to be a weight off his shoulders.
I-Inspiration (did their s/o change them somehow, or the other way around? Like trying out new things or helped them overcome personal problems?)
You were another person that was able to show Ace he is worthy of being loved. It’s an insecurity of his that will probably never go away, but that’s okay because you’re more than happy to remind him daily.
J-Jealousy (do they get jealous easily? How do they deal with it?)
I talked about Ace’s jealousy in his angst alphabet! But I’ll go over it again here!
When he gets jealous he turns into such a man child. He’s pouting and moping around while mumbling to himself. He develops quite a petty attitude. If you were to ask him “want to go get something to eat?” he’d respond with “why don’t you just go and ask ____ for some food.” But, as soon as you begin commenting on how jealous he’s acting he’s going to deny it to the end of his days.
K-Kisses (are they a good kisser? What was the first kiss like?)
I feel as though I may give Ace a little too much credit when it comes to this because I want to think that he’d be one of those amazing kissers, like he just has a knack for it. But in reality, that probably wouldn’t be the case.
Ace is more likely to be quite an overexcited kisser. He’s keen and passionate, that’s for sure. But with your first kiss, he’s a little too keen and tries to move way to fast. After some calming down and a little bit of a giggle to one other he’s in the zone.
L-Love confession (how would they confess to their s/o?)
The two of you are just talking and he’s, unsurprisingly, brought up his brother, Luffy. What is surprising however, is when he tells you how badly he wants you guys to meet each other. Your first reaction was “yeah that stands to reason he wants all of us to meet luffy” but before you could say anything Ace is already going on like “yeah, I just can’t wait to have the two people I love most in the world meet. It’d be real cool” (or something along those lines and probably a little less cheesy LMAO). You just stare at him like “heh?” and he stares at you like “uhhhh… yeah I said what I said?”
M-Marriage (do they want to get married? How do they propose? What would the marriage be like?)
Heck yeah, this dude wants to get married! Getting to show you off to everyone? Yes please! Getting to tell you in front of everyone he knows just how much he loves you? BIG YES. Oh, AND a big ass party afterwards? THIS DUDE CANNOT WAIT! Being able to marry you is one of his dreams, and he’s actually been thinking about since the first date you guys went on.
But, he’s really struggling with how to propose to you. He’s gone through every cliché in the book. A ring at the bottom of your glass, in your food, a carriage ride etc. They’re all great ideas but he doesn’t think they suit the dynamic of your relationship. So, he’s going to enlist the help of Whitebeard Pirates and create an elaborate prank (that has a 50/50 chance of going wrong but also still working out exactly as he wanted).
N-Nicknames (what do they call their s/o?)
He likes to call you hot stuff or baby. Initially, these nicknames resulted in a lot of teasing from the other whitebeard pirates but neither of you cared.
O-On cloud nine (what are they like when they are in love? Is it obvious for others? How do they express their feelings?)
Whitebeard and a few of the other division commanders are the first to notice. I mean, it’s not that hard… He is constantly bringing you up in every conversation (if you’re not there) and if you are there, they can’t even get his attention for a moment. You have his undivided attention! It isn’t until Marco or someone says “You’re down baddddd, Ace” that he’s like HUH?
P-PDA (are they upfront about their relationship? Do they brag with their s/o in front of others? Or are they rather shy to kiss etc. when others are watching?)
Ace loves PDA. He is all about kissing you in front of everyone else. So much so that you constantly get told to “get a room!”. Ace loves to show off his relationship with you to the whole wide world. He’s incredibly proud to have found someone that loves him wholeheartedly.
Q-Quirk (some random ability they have that is beneficial in a relationship?)
Well, thanks to his devil fruit, his body temperature tends to run pretty warm, so you have your own personal heater.
R-Romance (how romantic are they? What would they do to make their s/o happy? Cliché or rather creative?)
Ace is romantic in his own way, that’s for sure. He expresses his love through teasing and jokes, but also through quality time. He’s big on that. Making sure all his attention is on you so you know just how much he loves you.
S-Support (are they helping their s/o achieve their goals do they believe in them?)
He has so much faith in your ability to achieve your goals. He wants to be able to help you in any way he can, so if you come to him and ask for help, he would be absolutely ecstatic! Ace just wants to be a part of your success story (in the best way possible, I know some people only want to because then they get credited but that’s not why ace wants to do it at all! Nothing makes Ace happier than seeing those he loves achieve their goals).
T-Thrill (do they need to try out new things to spice out your relationship or do they prefer certain routine?)
Your relationship is already spiced out enough as it is. He’s got an extremely mischievous personality so is constantly getting up to god knows what, and some how always manages to drag you into it. If anything, your relationship could do with a little more routine (but you both are extremely happy with the way it is).
U-Understanding (how good do they know their partner? Are they empathetic?)
Ace is an extremely empathetic individual. He understands a lot more than most, just how awful negative emotions can be (whether that’s sadness, insecurity, anger etc.). So he is quick to your aid whenever something seems to wrong.
V-Value (how important is the relationship to them? What is it’s worth in comparison to other things in their life?)
All relationships in Ace’s life are extremely important to him. He even values them more than his own life. Your relationship is no exception. You’ve shown him love, and accepted him for who he truly is, so there’s nothing he wouldn’t do for you and he makes that very clear every single day.
W-Wild card (a random fluff headcanon?)
He knows all your food orders off by heart. And when I say all your food orders, I mean ALL of them. He knows your food orders for each of your different moods. He memorised them pretty quickly so that he could surprise you with food regardless of your mood.
X-XOXO (Are they very affectionate? Do they love to kiss and cuddle?)
He is an extremely affectionate individual. Ace is practically attached to your hip at every possible moment. An arm will always be thrown around your waist or shoulders, and he literally wants to spend all day smothering you in kisses. He’s shameless when it comes to affection.
Y-Yearning (how will they cope when they are missing their partner?)
He copes by talking about you to EVERYONE. He tells the crew stories about you (mind you these are stories not only that they’ve heard multiple times, but they were also there to witness themselves). It gets to the point where even Whitebeard is like “ya know what Ace, you can go visit them.”
Z-Zeal (are they willing to go to great lengths for the relationship? If so, what kind?)
As I said previously, all relationships in Ace’s life are extremely important to him. We saw what lengths he was willing to go to when Thatch was killed by Blackbeard, and you would be no different. In fact, Ace would be willing to do all of that and so much more, if it was for you.

The Voyage So Far: Enies Lobby
east blue (1 | 2) || alabasta (1 | 2) || skypiea || water 7 || enies lobby || thriller bark || paramount war (1 | 2) || fishman island || punk hazard || dressrosa (1 | 2) || whole cake island || wano (1 | 2)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is still one of my very favorite nami panels. i think she’s really great through all of water 7 and enies lobby in general, actually, even though she isn’t really one of the characters in focus for a lot of it- like zoro and sanji, she stays pretty steadfast and very badass even though everything that happens, and never gives up on robin for a moment despite being one of the ‘weaker’ members of the crew. and it’s always fun to see her playing with lightning.
Tumblr media
one of my favorite jokes from the first half or so of enies lobby is the strawhats both being completely unsurprised that luffy charges in ahead of them as soon as they arrive AND being able to find him immediately by following the explosions. they know him so well.
Tumblr media
luffy’s never been scared of dying, going all the way back to when he told coby he was fine with dying for his dream back in chapter two or three. that conversation is what his exchange with blueno here reminds me of- blueno asks him how long he intends to keep fighting, and luffy says until he dies, like there’s nothing to it.
it’s always been a trait of his to face death unflinching with a grin, so long as it’s for the sake of something he cares about, be it his crew or his brother or his dream, and i just really like that about him.
Tumblr media
i’ll go into it in the dressrosa post too, but i think it’s really impressive just how long oda held off on giving luffy any sort of significant power-up. he gets his first big power boost in the whole series here, forty volumes in. i’ve always liked that oda is very conservative with power boosts like this, because it both keeps the series’ powerscaling in check and makes the times it does happen much weightier. this is a monumental moment, and it feels like it.
also, i love the way gear two is drawn pre-timeskip, especially with the steam. it looks very cool and atmospheric.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i really like how united the strawhat crew feels throughout enies lobby, after all the internal turmoil and discord of water seven. even though the matter of usopp leaving the crew is still unresolved, they’ll all together once more, on the same page, and fully united in the goal of saving robin, whatever consequences it might bring.
Tumblr media
the tree of knowledge has such a cool design- it looks massive, and even more than that, it looks old. you look at that tree and you know its been there for easily thousands of years. its seen entire eras of history, and it would be priceless even without the countless books stored inside it.
and then it burns.
Tumblr media
i’m so endlessly sad about the tragedy that is robin’s relationship with her mother. they never even got to see each other until their world was ending, and even then only for a couple minutes.
olvia is a very interesting character, because she’s someone who chose her dream over the people she loved. that’s not an inherently good or bad choice, but it is a choice she made, and it’s what led to the ending she and robin had to have. i’ve wondered a lot what might have happened if she chose the other way, if she never left or if she came back sooner or if she chose to flee the buster call with robin, and how different (and almost certainly better) robin’s life would have been if she had.
Tumblr media
in a way, olvia reminds me a lot of kouzuki toki. they both die in order to fling a light of knowledge and hope into the future, and they both send their children away and choose to stay behind to choke on ash for the sake of a better tomorrow.
Tumblr media
i didn’t really notice until putting these panels together, but a lot of things burn in enies lobby. ohara burns, and the pluton plans and the world government flag, and enies lobby itself, and at the end, the going merry burns, too. if you extend it back to water seven, there’s the galley-la headquarters, too. in an arc that deals so much with the preservation and destruction of history and knowledge, it’s a fitting motif.
Tumblr media
the world government flag burning is still to this day one of the most striking panels out of a series full of them, in my opinion. in one act, the strawhats proclaim their absolute defiance against the world government, and their willingness to make enemies of the greatest power in the world for the sake of their friend.
it’s also another one of those moments that’s interesting to think about in the context of luffy’s past. it was a ship flying that same flag that shot sabo down, and while luffy wasn’t there to see it, i don’t think he’s oblivious to that fact, especially given how he says just before this he understands robin’s enemies perfectly.
dadan told him and ace that there was nothing they could do against the whole world, and luffy went and did it anyways.
Tumblr media
sometimes i just think about how scary it must have been for robin, someone who’s been weighed down by the shackles of her past with no escape in sight for so very long, to open herself up and let herself hope, for life and freedom and a dream that’s always been out of reach.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
franky has a lot of really great moments between this arc and water seven- his conversation with usopp as usopp is working on merry and his talk with robin on the sea train are two others. it’s almost impressive how quickly he becomes an immensely likable character once we start getting to know him, given how he’s first introduced as an absolute piece of shit.
his burning of the pluton plans is a favorite of mine, and i think it might be because, like so many people before and after him, he’s choosing here to stake all his hopes on the strawhats, on luffy’s ability to pull off the impossible and on robin’s goodness. when robin’s only ever been chased and hated and called a demon by the world, franky chooses to trust her and luffy with the legacy his dad died for, and neither of them let him down.
Tumblr media
monster point looks SO FUCKING TERRIFYING in enies lobby, and i LOVE it. look at that. franky is seven and half feet tall, and in front of monster point he’s tiny. monster point is huge, and dead-eyed, and a force of absolute destruction. i do kind of wish we got to see chopper go completely feral like this more often. he deserves to be terrifying!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i love how much FAITH all the rest of the strawhats continue to have in usopp throughout enies lobby. he left the crew and they really would have a right to be angry at him if they chose to, but it doesn’t even seem to cross any of their minds. they’re just happy he’s okay, and they include him again without missing a beat, because he’s still their friend and they know down to their bones they can trust him, even after everything.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i’ve always really loved zoro and kaku’s little moment of post-battle banter here- zoro relays paulie’s message about cp9 being fired, kaku says he’s out of a job, zoro tells him to try the zoo, and kaku cracks up.
it feels very real to me for whatever reason, and i think part of it ties back into how well one piece handles morality with its characters- zoro and kaku are genuinely pretty similar people who get along decently, it just happens that they wound up on opposite sides. there are series where you’d never see moments like this due to the lines between good and bad being so firmly drawn, and i love how one piece blurs those lines so much they may as well not exist a lot of the time.
Tumblr media
this is the other sequence, along with luffy climbing the drum rockies barehanded, that always makes me physically cringe to look at. it looks so painful. robin is so nearly powerless here, but not quite- she can still buy time for her crew to catch up, even if it’s only seconds, even if she risks shattering her teeth or even her jaw in the process. she’s spent so long giving up and has only just started daring to hope- she’s not about to go gentle.
Tumblr media
there aren’t many panels that give me catharsis like this one. there really aren’t.
oda’s villains are usually complicated and awful and often a little admirable, if only for how clever or how terrifyingly powerful they are, but every now and then he comes up with someone who’s just pathetic and cowardly and pointlessly cruel. spandam is like this, obviously, and so is orochi, and the celestial dragons, and i’d argue flampe from whole cake island as well. and there’s nothing like seeing characters like them- weak, cruel people so assured in their own power and rightness- get obliterated.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
one of the things i really like about enies lobby is that nobody really gets sidelined- everybody gets multiple chances to shine. luffy, usopp, and obviously robin are the most in focus, obviously, but zoro, sanji, nami, chopper, and even franky all get a bunch of individual awesome moments. oda’s ability to handle his cast satisfyingly is consistently really impressive (if sometimes strained in huge ensemble arcs like dressrosa or wano) and it really shows here, i think.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i just really love the entire climax of enies lobby. much like the arc as a whole, it just feels triumphant, even though the situation is extremely dire. luffy unlocking gear three, robin’s cuffs getting unlocked, usopp shooting spandam and the marines all the way from the tower of justice- it’s all just good, a long chain of much-needed victories and catharses, and it feels very good to read.
Tumblr media
i’ll always be impressed by just how much characterization oda manages to give merry, a boat. she’s only really a character in water seven and the end of enies lobby, only about two chapters of which she actually speaks in. and yet i don’t think you’d find a single one piece fan who disagrees that merry’s death is easily one of the most heartwrenching in the entire series.
Tumblr media
i love the reactions of the strawhats to robin’s thanks. they’ve just gone through hell to save her, most of them are beat to shit and they all risked their lives, and yet they all just smile, or brush it off, because to them there’s nothing else they could have done. it’s all worth it, so long as they got her back, so long as she’s safe and happy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
merry’s funeral just hits me in the chest every single time i read it. it’s tragic, of course, but there’s also something almost lovely about it, something peaceful about her getting to go out on her own terms, carrying her crew to safety one last time, defying every rule of the universe to do it. just like a strawhat pirate.
oda’s ability to communicate emotion through expressions really comes through here, too. merry has the only lines in this scene, fitting for her death in the limelight, but the shots of every other crewmate’s face let us know at a glance just what they’re all feeling and just how strongly they’re feeling it.
Tumblr media
you know, i’d forgotten we only learn the name of the new world after enies lobby. we only get proper exposition about the revolutionary army and the yonkou here, too, despite them being set up since loguetown and jaya (or alabasta, or even chapter one if you count from shanks’s introduction) respectively. oda’s ability to parse out exposition and explanation so we always have just the right amount of information is really impressive- we always have more questions, but we also always have the feeling that those questions have answers, and that sooner or later they’ll be revealed.
Tumblr media
points at shanks. i just think he’s neat.
Tumblr media
it’s my opinion that one of the great joys of one piece is seeing luffy and the crew rise up in the world, and seeing them gain more and more notoriety. i love nothing they do ever happens in a vacuum- everything has impacts, and there are always outside eyes watching, and often those impacts are things that they never could have predicted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ace and blackbeard is still, i think, definitely one of the coolest looking fights in the whole series. it’s not all that often we get to see two people with extremely flashy and showy abilities go all-out against each other, and the resulting fireworks are still really something to behold, despite how badly it all ends.

crown the king (with bloody flowers) - chapter 36
Hanahaki au drabble series, in which Luffy is in love with the sea.
Ao3
chapter 36 - leaves - rayleigh
On Ruskaina, there are good days and bad days.
(Rayleigh tries to not think about how they seem to be so much like the last few months aboard the Oro Jackson.)
The good days are the days that Luffy gets up before Rayleigh with a smile on his face, the days that Luffy coughs a few times but not so much that he’s hurting, the days where he’s attentive and looks more at Rayleigh than the ocean. The good days are the days when Luffy looks so much like Shanks, when he was fourteen and sailing with the King of the Pirates.
(Rayleigh wonders what the world has come to, when fourteen year olds lead crews and take down governments, all on their own power without any guidance. He’s not the sort to truly fight that sort of thing but -
With Shanks and Buggy, they were protected by their crew, guided, trusted. The Straw Hats do the same for Luffy - but they weren’t strong enough to be at Marineford.
Fourteen, and already the strongest supernova.
Rayleigh keeps this close to his chest, and works to make him stronger.)
The bad days are the days that Luffy looks more like Roger, more like the fourteen year old Rayleigh knows him to be, just fighting for one more day of life.
The bad days are the days that Rayleigh has to shake Luffy awake, or the days that Luffy doesn’t need to be wakened at all - already is from a nightmare, one that he didn’t alert Rayleigh too. The bad days are the days Luffy shakes, and coughs blood (so much blood) with dead leaves, then shakes even more as he sees the red on his hands. They are the days that Luffy is quiet, that Luff simply stares off at the horizon, that Luffy wanders by the shore when Rayleigh gives him a break and dips his feet in the ocean, the days that they avoid the bonfire and Rayleigh lets Luffy tuck under his arm for warmth in night.
The bad days are the days when Luffy wakes with Ace’s name on his lips and doesn’t cry where Rayleigh can see him.
Some weeks, there are more bad days than good days.
This is one of those weeks.
Rayleigh wakes to the sounds of soft gasping and looks to his right. In the dim fire light, Luffy is sitting up, still bandaged, clutching his chest. There’s a moment before Luffy starts coughing and when he does, he doesn’t stop. Plume tree blossoms and roses, heleniums and pink verbenas, marigolds littering the ground.
(Ruskaina has never blossomed like this.)
Rayleigh debates letting Luffy just go back to sleep. Sometimes he appreciates Rayleigh’s guidance. Other times, no.
(Rayleigh is here to train Luffy, to push him, to make him great. But trauma - war - it’s a tricky thing, especially when you are fourteen and not quite sure you’ll live to the end of the year. Training Luffy isn’t like training Shanks. It’s another beast entirely, something Rayleigh is still learning only two months in to their training.)
But then those soft gasps turn into panicked half gasps as Luffy can’t get his breathing under control, and Rayleigh can’t stand back any longer.
He gets up, and strides to where Luffy is sitting, settling down to rub his back.
‘Luffy,” Rayleigh says, low and quiet when Luffy doesn’t even notice him. “Breathe.”
Luffy doesn’t. He just keeps gasping, red on his hands and eyes small and panicked. Rayleigh puts his own hand over Luffy’s, blocking the sight of red blood.
‘Breathe. In, for four, out for four - Breathe Luffy.”
The last time this happened, Rayleigh knocked him on the head, the way he used to do for Roger when Roger got like this, and Luffy had curled in on himself and coughed even more. Times like this, Luffy needs something gentler.
As far as Rayleigh can tell, its not something he’s gotten quite often in his life.
(Shanks liked to talk about the little boy that stole his heart when he came back to Sabaody. On and on, and in the night into his drink, about how Luffy looked when he left, like he was being abandoned, like he was being left all alone. How Luffy was so used to being chucked down mountains by his grandfather, that he was so awed by the way Shanks would so gently swing him up on his shoulders.)
Luffy takes a shuddering gasp, panic lessening as he slowly, slowly follows Rayleigh’s orders. “That’s it,” Rayleigh tells him, carefully wiping the blood on his hands away so he’s not set off again. “Breathe.”
Luffy does, one after another, coming back to himself inch by inch. There are tear tracks along his cheeks, dried by the fire, but he barely notices.
“Rayleigh?” Luffy asks, quiet, voice hoarse.
“It’s me,” Rayleigh answers, settling in. Luffy shakes under his hand and slumps into his side.
“Oh.” Luffy’s quiet for a moment. “I thought… I thought you were A- Ace. I thought you were him for a moment.”
Rayleigh hums, but doesn’t give more than that, letting Luffy mark his own way through this. He’s still shaking.
“I wanna go see her.” Luffy says after a pause. He doesn’t get up.
Her…
(Rayleigh has always loved the sea - he loved the world, not as much as Roger but still despite the fact that it took Roger away from him. The sea… he’s not quite sure how to feel about the sea, the love Luffy has for her something different than the love Roger had for the world.
Roger hadn’t found the hatred of the world until he started adventuring - a choice he made to pursue his dream.
Luffy found the hatred of the ocean on accident, young and foolish, and clung to it for seven years. Clung to life. He’s dying each day.
It hurts.)
“Okay.” Rayleigh says, and helps Luffy up when he can barely get his legs to work.
They walk to the ocean then, side by side, the first stray pinks of dawn rising in the sky. Rayleigh keeps a careful control on his Conqueror’s Haki, yet Luffy doesn’t seem to notice. He’s in a daze, hand clinging to the arm that Rayleigh had written 3D2Y on ever so carefully.
Flowers fall behind them. Theres a path in front of them, from the last time they did this.
Flowers, still pristine as ever.
They arrive at the beach as the sun cracks over the horizon, Luffy stumbling to his knees and burying his hands in the waves. Rayleigh takes a careful step back.
(He’s dying, Trafalgar Law had muttered, faster now, and even faster after each dip in the ocean.
Rayleigh had nodded his head, and made no promise to keep Luffy from the sea.
What were pirates, unless they loved her waters?
He regrets that claim now, ever so slightly.)
Luffy’s quiet as the red on his hands washes away. He’s quiet as the sun rises, even as he keeps his eyes steadily on the horizon.
“Rayleigh?” He asks.
Rayleigh hums.
“I miss my crew.”
The last time Luffy had seen them, they were being swiped away by someone known as the Tyrant.
Kuma had said he was sending them all somewhere safe, but Amazon Lily was safe for no man.
It’s no wonder Luffy worries.
“I know,” Rayleigh says, quiet. “But two years.”
“Two years,” Luffy agrees, and trembles.
I don’t have two years.
The day before this, Luffy barely had any energy, and spent the majority of the day coughing.
He really doesn’t have two years - but Luff is a man of miracles.
He’ll see his crew again, even if it kills him.
This, Rayleigh knows for fact, even as he sweeps Luffy up in cloak, drying him off. Even as he makes sure to keep Luffy’s attention on him that day, even as he sends Luffy off to train while he makes dinner and extinguishes the fire before Luffy can come back.
It’s a bad day. A day where Luffy is tired and coughing and worried about his crew.
Rayleigh just hopes tomorrow will be a good one.

Day Four: Betrayal
It's true that most alliances between pirates end in Betrayal. Law didn't want this one to end that way.
TW: major character death
Word Count: 2.2k
"Law!" The shriek that echoed across the battlefield made Law's ears ring. Law spun around, looking for the source. They had been yelling his name but there was too much going on. Then Nami was by his side. Something in his stomach turned when he saw the look on her face. Panic set in Law's chest and his hands shook, Law clutched his sword tight.
"Where's Luffy?"
"Up there!" Nami's voice hitched with panic and Law looked up. Luffy was falling from the top floor of Kaido's palace. Where the big fight had been. Law knew he should be up there with Luffy but he got caught up in all this chaos on the way there.
"He's not moving..." Nami said.
"Room!" Law didn't hesitate. Luffy was far away but if Law learned anything in Dressrosa it was that he could push his room far beyond its limits. He brought Luffy to them. Law just hoped that this was a repeat of Dressrosa, and Luffy just need that cool down.
That wasn't the case, and Law knew it as soon as he laid eyes on Luffy. He was beaten beyond recognition. What wasn't bruised was covered in blood. Nami gasped.
"Luffy!"
"Where's Tony-ya!?" Law asked. He'd need all the help he could get. Luffy looked worse than he had after the war and Law just hoped to any god that might exist that all that blood wasn't Luffy's.
"I don't know," Nami muttered, though she was looking around.
"Help me get him out of here, it's not safe!" Law said he was already picking Luffy up, pulling Luffy's arm over his shoulder. Nami did the same and they dragged Luffy into the wreckage and hid in a building Law was certain wasn't structurally sound.
That didn't matter right now.
Nami and Law laid Luffy down on the ground. Law took Luffy's wrist, his hands shook as he tried to find a pulse. Part of Law didn't want to for fear of not finding one.
Law didn't need another person he loved dying. He couldn't take that again. Another loved one dying because of his own stupid choices. But he found it, Luffy's pulse, it was faint, but there. Law sighed in relief.
"Is he..."
"No, not yet anyway, I need Tony-ya," Law said. He couldn't do this on his own.
"I'll find him!" Nami said. "Just keep Luffy alive until then!" Nami said. "He's going to live!"
Law wasn't so sure about that. Law opened his room. He'd do what he could for now but he needed the supplies he knew Chopper had, and he needed Chopper's help.
"You won't die here," Law muttered. "I promise..." Law clenched his jaw, trying to keep his lip from trembling.
Law focused on Luffy, his beaten and bruised body. Luffy should have had broken bones from how badly he was beaten, he shouldn't be alive.
Luckily for the both of them, that devil fruit had Luffy's back.
But the internal bleeding was beyond belief. Luffy was going to bleed out and Law wasn't sure what he could do even with Chopper's help. Law closed his room. He'd need as much energy as he could get to save Luffy when Chopper got there.
Law heard footsteps coming towards him. It was way too soon for Nami to be coming back. Law drew his sword and pressed himself against the wall next to the entrance.
No way in hell was Law going to let any harm come to Luffy right now. Law heard the footsteps right on the other side of the entrance and swung his sword.
It was met by another sword. One he recognized. Wado Ichimoji.
"Roronoa?" Law asked. He still couldn't see the sword's wielder.
"Trafalgar," Zoro responded. Law lowered his sword and Zoro stepped into the doorway.
"L-Luffy!" Zoro gritted his teeth as he sheathed his own sword.
"He's in worse condition than he was during the war," Law admitted. Zoro looked over at Law with his eye wide.
"What does that mean?"
"I was barely able to save him then," Law said, sheathing his sword. He sat on the ground next to Luffy.
"Is he going to die?" Zoro asked with a sullen voice. His eye was glued to Luffy.
"I don't know," Law admitted. His voice cracked and Law cleared his throat through to cover it up. He pulled the brim of his hat over his eyes. Luffy wasn't dead yet.
"Law!" That was Chopper's voice this time.
Chopper came running into the room and Nami was right behind him.
"How is he—" Chopper stopped dead in his tracks. "Oh no."
"Chopper!? What does that mean!?" It was Zoro that asked, well, more of, demanded.
"Law?" Chopper looked over at him.
"I don't know if we can save him," Law admitted to all three of him. "The internal bleeding is bad, and if all that blood is his, is a miracle he's not dead already." Law bit back his own feelings as he spoke.
"We can!" Chopper insisted, he went to the other side of Luffy and kneeled on thr ground next to him. "We'll save him, no matter how bad it is."
Chopper spoke with confidence as he pulled off his backpack filled with medical supplies.
"You guys keep watch outside, we need to the most stable environment we can get," Law ordered. Not even Zoro hesitated to follow Law's command. He and Nami went outside, ready to do whatever it took to defend this make-shift operating room. Law's room opened up behind them and all there was left to do was hope Chopper and Law were skilled enough to save Luffy.
No words passed between Nami and Zoro but the tension was there.
Funny that Nami and Zoro were the ones standing here. They had come a long way since the three of them sailed on those two dingies in the East Blue. To think that could all end in just a few minutes was absurd. Luffy couldn't die, not here.
Not when he could have died in Logue Town on that execution platform. Then, it was like God himself intervened to keep Luffy alive. Zoro remembered it clear as day. He and Sanji had been so far away and that lightning had left the taste of metal on his tongue.
Meanwhile, Law and Chopper had gotten most of the external wounds cleaned up. That was the easy part. Law didn't think all of the blood was Luffy's. He had a wound on the side of his head, some cuts on his arms and legs, and some scraped up knuckles. But the scar over his chest was open again. Not as bad as it had been during the war but it was still bad.
The real challenge was the internal bleeding still. Law was worried about cutting Luffy open in this hut of a building. It wasn't sanitary at all. But they didn't have a choice. Law just did what he could to keep the dust settled in on the floor in his room. Luckily Chopper had a lot of rubbing alcohol in that bag of his.
"Oh god," Chopper's face contorted into the definition of worry the moment he saw the damage.
It was so much worse than Law thought. Maybe Law had been denying the severity earlier out of panic.
"Law—" Chopper looked up at him and Law could see the doubt ridden in his face.
"Don't think about that!" Law snapped, he was already working with what he could. Luffy was a miracle worker and what they needed right now was that miracle. I felt like hours they were in there.
Finally, when Chopper and Law got Luffy all bandaged up, it seemed like it was all over. But Law couldn't convince himself that Luffy would be okay.
Chopper put a wet rag over Luffy's face. Law's hands were covered in blood now. He got to his feet and headed to the battered doorway.
"Roronoa, Nami," Law called. They were standing a few feet away, eyes on the somewhat distant battlefield.
Both of them spun around.
"We're done, he's alive," Law said. Though it sounded more like he was trying to convince himself of that.
"Is he awake?" Nami asked. Law shook his head. The three of them went back inside. Chopper was securing some of the bandages.
"What now?" Zoro asked, looking to Law.
"We wait for him to wake up," Law said.
"He can't go back into battle!" Chopper said.
"I know that," Law snapped, he was on edge and worried.
"He will anyway," Zoro said. "You know he will."
Law didn't say anything to that. Zoro was right. There was no doubt about that.
"Luffy!" Chopper exclaimed. Luffy was sitting up, rubbing his head.
"Where am I?" Luffy muttered, looking around the room Luffy started coughing, he covered his mouth with his hand. His coughs were harsh and dry. Law winced at it. Luffy's hand was covered in blood when he pulled away.
There's blood in his lungs.
"Oh, everything hurts," Luffy whimpered, Luffy clutched his stomach and pulled his knees up to his chest.
"Luffy, stop moving so much, you'll reopen all your wounds!"
Law could feel it, Luffy slipping away in his room.  It was like watching a Vivire card burn. It didn't seem real especially since Luffy was right next to him, awake, breathing, talking. A thought crossed his mind and Law made a decision immediately.
"Luffy-ya," Law said quietly. Law couldn't keep the tears from his eyes.
"Torao!" Luffy grinned. "I didn't realize you were here! You saved me again, huh?"
"No," Law muttered, his voice cracked. He could feel Luffy's life in his room, it was weak and getting more faint compared to Zoro's, Nami's, and Chopper's. Luffy's life always seemed to overpower everyone else when Law opened up a room. Not now. "You're dying."
"What!?" Chopper, Zoro, and Nami all shouted at him.
Luffy looked over at Law and blinked.
"Huh," Luffy muttered, he looked down at his body. "Is that why everything hurts so much?"
"Probably," Law said. Luffy started coughing again.
"Ugh, that hurts!" Luffy grumbled when he was done.
Luffy leaned against Law's side. Law was a little surprised but didn't say anything. "Sorry, guys." Luffy looked over at Nami and Zoro with a smile, then Chopper with that same smile.
"Don't go saying stupid shit," Zoro huffed. "You're not dying, you just need rest!"
Law didn't expect that to come from Zoro. Nami or Chopper maybe, but not Zoro.
"You're right about one thing, Roronoa," Law said. "I won't let him die here."
"Torao, what are you talking about?" Luffy muttered.
"I can still save you," Law muttered to him. He wasn't sure if the others heard him but he didn't care about that.
"You're thinking of that thing that Mingo wanted!" Luffy sat up and glared at Law. "I won't let you! I'd rather die!"
"Luffy-ya—"
"NO!" Luffy snapped. "You're not dying for me and I don't want to live forever! I'll die right here if I have to!"
"Luffy!" Law bit.
"What are you guys talking about?" Nami demanded. Luffy started coughing again and Law could feel Luffy's life fading still. He was barely hanging on it was a surprise Luffy was even conscious.
"My devil fruit has the ability to grant someone eternal life," Law said. Silence settled over the three strawhats while Luffy kept hacking up blood. "At the cost of my own life."
"Law—" Chopper started to say.
"Zoro!" Luffy met his first mate's eye. "Don't let Law do that thing no matter what happens, captains orders!"
Zoro's eye widened but he took a deep breath and nodded. "Aye, captain."  Law gritted his teeth. He expanded his room as wide as he could get it.
"I'm not letting you die, Luffy-ya, I don't care what that means, you won't die here!"
"Torao why are you being such a bastard!?" Luffy growled.
"Because I love you!" Law snapped. Law swapped himself and Luffy for some rocks to get them away from the rest of the strawhats. Law closed the room as soon as they were away.
"Torao!" Luffy growled, he punched Law but it was feeble. Luffy started hacking up blood again. He got to his feet.
"I'll fight you if I have to Torao, you won't do that!" Luffy insisted.
"You couldn't even fight a blade of grass right now," Law pointed out.
"I don't care!" Luffy screamed.
Law drew his sword and pointed at Luffy.
"Nico-ya was right," Law said. "Pirate Alliances end in betrayal."
"Room!"
"TORAO NO!" Luffy screamed.
Law could hear Zoro coming around the corner.
"Law!" Zoro shouted. But it was too late, Law did what he had to do. He could feel Zoro's blade on his back but it didn't matter. Law fell to the ground and his room collapsed.
"Torao! You stupid bastard, wake up!" Luffy shouted he straddled Law's body and pulled his jacket into his first.
"Torao!" Luffy's voice cracked. He could feel it though. His body didn't ache anymore. He had a lot more energy than he did before. "What about your crew!? God damn it TORAO!"
Luffy got to his feet. "DAMN IT, DAMN IT!" Luffy shouted out fo frustration, he paced back and forth, trying to fight the tears in his eyes. Law wasn't supposed to die.
This wasn't supposed to happen again.

One Piece Anime Wano Arc Episodes 890
One Piece Anime: Wano Arc, Episodes 890 This honestly is less going to be a review and more of a commentary as I watch through the anime's rendition of the Wano arc. I've honestly never really watched too much of the One Pieceanime, mostly just looking up the highlights of the arcs I read in the manga. I did watch the filler episodes and most of the movies, as I've talked about at length recently. And everyone tells me that the anime has some rather terrible pacing, particularly around the time of Dressrossa, which is apparently pretty padded out. But then I heard the absolute opposite for Wano, where the anime has received a new art-style and one hell of a fancy makeover. And I thought... hey, I'm on a One Piece kick this year, clearly, so yeah, I think I'm going to give this a shot.
The Wano arc, I think, is one that works a lot better because it has the reverse problem of a lot of One Piece arcs -- there are a lot of moments in Act One of the manga's version of the story that the writer clearly purposefully threw in a couple of off-screened moments that the anime could expand into full action scenes. I already know that Sanji versus Page One is fully animated in the anime, and scenes like Big Mom vs. Kaido or Zoro vs. Basil Hawkins are extended a lot more than the couple of panels we had in the manga. And Wano's got a lot of supporting characters, some of which actually get swept under the rug when I first read through the manga chapters weekly. So yeah, having bright colours and voices and music is going to make this a much more fun experience!
Anyway, here goes my collection of random notes and commentary. Be aware that there will be MANGA SPOILERS, as I will point out a couple of things here and there about stuff I notice that's foreshadowing or whatever:
* Marco's blue-and-yellow phoenix form looks so, so much more vibrant and pops out compared to anything else in the series in colour, huh? I think out of any other character, Marco is extra-memorable in animated format. * That said, basically half this episode is just a recap of the Paramount War. I mean, I haven't seen the Paramount War in full animated format, so it's nice to hear Whitebeard and Ace and Marco speak some of their more famous lines there. But on the other hand, it's also it's kind of one of the more-criticized parts of the One Piece anime that any time they could pad out an episode with scenes from a previously-produced episode, they will. * We actually get to see the Grudge/Payback War in the anime! I think this is less of a showcase of events that actually happened and more of a symbolic one, but hey, we get to see Blackbeard doing some sky-quakes and black holes and Marco turning phoenix. It just shows the Whitebeard division commanders getting sucked into a giant Dragon-Ball-esque spirit bomb Black Hole. Actually pretty neat! * Jozu has both arms in that vision. Whether it's an error or a spoiler or if he has a prosthetic a la Akainu in Film: Z, we'll see eventually.
* This episode also has a bit of a recap of the revelations about Wano from the Zou arc, but it's a lot shorter and feels a lot more relevant to the upcoming arc. * Brook actually expresses some interest on Vivi, apparently having heard of her from the others. I've always liked this from the filler episodes, of the newer Straw Hats slowly learning about prior adventures. Brook being Brook, of course, a panty joke was tossed in. * The Japanese-art style water waves look so pretty when animated! * The random octopus that makes Japanese kabuki theater (?) sounds is another thing that works so much better in the anime. I've always thought it felt a bit forced and random in the manga version. * The high-tempo music when the Sunny sails into the koi waves is very, very fun! * Ah, yes, the very first chapter of Wano in the manga shows off a bunch of carps jumping up a waterfall. You know, considering the whole legend that a carp that jumps over the waterfall transforms into a dragon... i.e., a fish that is also a dragon...
* The first one that's properly and almost fully drawn in the new Wano art style! And it looks gorgeous. * Also a new theme song! I've never paid that much attention to theme songs in anime, but I definitely like "One Dream One Wish" more than "We're the Super Powers". Shame that, as with most anime, the opening sort of spoils, like, half of the things that happens in the arc. * Speaking of great background music... the tempo of that opening instrumental that Komurasaki plays on shamisen is pretty catchy, especially with that octopus going iyooo~ in the background. It also makes for very fun background music for Zoro's rampage at the end of the episode. * Anime Wano is so freaking colourful. The rooftops, the kimonos, the hair... I think I remembered reading that Oda made it a point to subvert the fact that everyone in feudal Japan had black hair by explicitly doing the opposite -- black hair is the exception rather than the norm in Wano. Fun! * The frog on Usopp's hat is a real frog! I always thought it was just a hat! It's adorable! The wiki tells me it's called Gama Pyonnosuke. It's an adorable friend! Forget Carrot or Kin'emon or Yamato, Gama Pyonnosuke for next Straw Hat! * The biggest expansion here is that we actually follow Zoro around as he wanders around the city until he gets arrested by the corrupt magistrate. And Zoro actually bumps into the man-slayer and corrupt magistrate, actually explaining why he recognizes the specific scent of blood during the whole seppuku court. * And then we get around a minute of Zoro fighting the magistrate guards with the seppuku knife and good ol' fisticuffs, something that I didn't think I needed, but is certainly very fun to watch! * This new animation studio loves the angled zoom-in into eyes, and I highly approve. I think we had that like at least three times when Zoro decides to get dangerous.
* I never quite realized that if Luffy hadn't been interrupted by the octopus and washed up next to the Thousand Sunny, the poor ship would be literally left to its own devices. You'd think after losing Merry, the Straw Hats would be more careful with their ships... * Zoro gets to slash the magistrates up even more! It's a single Tatsu Maki, but god damn what a pretty Tatsu Maki. The shot of his feet kicking and breaking the wooden floor, the black aura around his blades, the way that the dragon aura appears behind him, the demonic red eyes as Zoro slams down from the sky, and the shots of the surrounding terrain being cut up into cubes... pretty awesome! * Luffy dodging the bullet from the random Beast Pirate goon with Observation Haki and the gomu-gomu-long-range-bitchslap has always been cool in the manga, and this episode makes it even cooler. Those glowing eyes! This is going to be the whole commentary, isn't it? Just me commenting on the scenes I find to be really cool? * Luffy's Conqueror Haki against the giant baboon is another very cool one. From the expression to the delivery of the line to the sound effect... Luffy's expression is actually pretty cool and borderline scary as he beats up the second goon. No wonder Tama went straight into "This is the I surrender pose!" * Also added in the anime is a vignette of Franky, Robin and Usopp seeing the news of Zorojuro becoming a wanted criminal. Again, not entirely necessary to know the story, but actually scenes that I don't mind being shown to us. Particularly that scene of Usopp utterly bullshitting an officer. * Luffy pets Komachiyo with his rubber arms. Komachiyo is a good boy. This is the most important scene.
* Did the manga show Luffy hiding the Sunny and letting it anchor in a cave? I don't remember it. I know that before the flashback and the raid we see the Sunny there, but it's nice to actually show Luffy not being so callous with the Sunny. * They got a pretty good voice actress for Tama that really makes her pretty adorable! So many times these kid guest star characters end up being annoying if they don't get a good voice, but between the voice-acting and the expressions, she's pretty fun! * Also, I think this is going to be something I repeat a couple of times, but both Tama and Tenguyama are so much more visually interesting with their full colour palettes. * Oh, right, Drake was the one that ransacked Tama's village. Wonder if that'll actually come up later on in the story... * Okay, thanks to the anime, it's really going to drill to me that it's pronounced 'Diez Drake' and not 'Eks Drake'. * I'm pretty sure everyone noticed it, but Ace learned to weave hats in Wano! That's how he became buddies with Oars Junior! I didn't notice it until just now!
* (Episode is the Cidre Guild filler arc that ties in to Stampede.) * What is Tenguyama waiting for? It's probably Oden or his retainers, but I don't think he's part of the samurai that was recruited by Kin'emon's group. Maybe he just missed the big recruitment drive, but that's weird. I wonder what role he's going to play in the arc... * There is a random metal guitar riff when Luffy sees the Nidai Kitetsu. And a glow of Observation Haki on Luffy's eyes. That's a small detail, but very cool! He also uses Observation when Hawkins arrives later on. I love the little trail of glowing red that streams out of his pupils when he activates it. * Tenguyama's sword has a very cool leaf-based handguard! Never noticed that. * Speaking of cool Observation Haki effects, Zoro's apparently activates when he senses sake. Appropriate! * I know it's me repeating this over and over, and we'll get so many cooler scenes later on, but Zoro casually launching that Phoenix Cannon to blow up the two random raptor-riders when he saves Tsuru? Such a simple scene but still so cool. Also very cool is the very brief slo-mo as Zoro re-angles the pathway of his slice when cutting down the second random goon. * Unlike most of the other things, I've always noticed that Basil Hawkins has a very cool Koma-deer mount. It looks even cooler in motion!
* This is perhaps one of the more extended scenes, since it features... fight scenes! In the manga, I think this lasted... maybe half a chapter? Less? A couple of page spreads? It's not just the Hawkins fight, either, Luffy's 'swordfighting' with Nidai Kitetsu also gets extended. Luffy's a bit more successful in using the sword to block and parry here. * Luffy's voice actor really makes the 'de gozaru' sound really funny. * I 100% missed Tsuru the first time I read through this chapter since we only see part of her in a single panel before her full-body debut after the Hawkins fight, and it's a lot less likely that you'll make that mistake in the anime. * Some 'elite' goons show up here, including a guy that uses his ponytail as a whip against Zoro, and a dude that makes fissures with a hammer that fights Luffy. Probably feels a bit more filler-y compared to the rest of the action scenes, but that's honestly nitpicking. * Zoro launching a Phoenix Cannon that slashes Hawkins's face is very cool. * Hawkins' little straw dolls gets an extended scene of it crawling out of his arm. It's so creepy, I love it. * Hawkins' giant straw demon StandBankaigets an very cool summoning animation and it's so creepy. The skies darkens and everything. Most importantly, it makes noises! Again, I love it.
* Luffy and Zoro vs. Hawkins! It's extended beyond just the simple 'dodge, then one-shot-slash' that it was in the manga. I really like Hawkins and his creepy-ass Straw Stand, so I am a huge fan of this. We get a couple of nice juxtaposition shots of Hawkins and the straw monster. Also Zoro goes shirtless in the fight. That's an important detail! * I really, really love how Zoro is having a gritted-teeth expression as he fights the giant straw demon; the straw demon is going gakakakakakakaka like a lunatic... then we cut to Hawkins who has a deadpan, bored expression as he swings his sword in the distance. * The animators really like to let the straw monster use the nails entwined to the tips of its fingers. That's fun! Zoro backhand-blocking the nails from hitting Luffy and Tama? That's cool! * Zoro does Ichi-Gorilla-Ni-Gorilla at one point, and totally slices and 'kills' Hawkins a bunch of times. * Also, speaking of pretty, glowing-eyes motion shots, Zoro using Nigiri: Toro Samon? Yeah. The cut itself is cool, but the zoom-in on Zoro's eyes as he does so? I'm sorry, I have a weakness for that kind of shot, it appears. * To extend the fight so that it's not just a single exchange of blows, Komachiyo gets knocked to the ground so that Zoro and the straw demon can actually fight for a bit. * Also shots I have a weakness to? DBZ-style 'aftermath of a powerful move'. This one isn't too over-the-top, but the slash extending into the sky and the shockwave rippling out from where Zoro slices the strawman thing is cool. * We actually see the scene of Okiku being harassed by Urashima in chronological order, and Urashima scares off a customer. Also, the implied scene of Zoro scaring off Urashima is actually shown here.
* This episode kind of extends the scenes in Tsuru's shop a bit more. Not the most exciting thing, but it does really help to build up Tama, Tsuru and Kiku. * ...wait, Tsuru's shop just displays the Kozuki crest very, very evidently on its door awning. If simply speaking the Kozuki name alone is a punishable crime, how did they get away with that? * Zoro trying to get Luffy to adopt a Wano-ized name is extra-funny in the anime! * Speaking of extended fight scenes, Batman gets to shoot alotmore arrows at Luffy and Zoro. It's kind of over-the-top on Batman's part, if we're being honest, even if Zoro and Luffy very easily dispatches of them.
* The anime does give Batman the ability to control his arrows via sonic waves or something, but he lasted for a much, much longer time than he really should have. * Batman fucking blocks Luffy's Busoshoku-empowered punch! He most definitely doesn't do it in the manga, and sure, knocking Luffy down with sonic waves? I buy that. Blocking Luffy and causing a small explosion in the air? ...I'm pretty sure just some random Gifter isn't supposed to be able to do that. Unless they're thinking of the other Batman? * They make the initial shot of Holdem answering the phone with the lion face pretty intimidating! * Holdem's lion beating their shared balls is still one of the weirdest jokes in the manga. * Some really nice face shots in this one, from Tama to Holdem to the lion to Luffy's group.
* A pretty obvious extended filler is Urashima bullying other sumo wrestlers. Urashima is kind of a dipshit, so it's not a particularly enjoyable filler for me. * Zoro gets to sumo-wrestle with one of Urashima's goons! This one, on the other hand, is pretty fun. We also get a little added bit where Zoro smirks after remembering Kiku's earlier insistence that she's a samurai, so it's less of a 'he doesn't give a shit' and more 'he wants to see what Kiku's skill is' or something.
* Luffy vs. Urashima is prolonged a bit in here, obviously. Not as entertaining as fighting Hawkins or even Batman, but okay, sure. Lots of grunting and growling in this one. Urashima cheats a bit more, Luffy has to use Armament Haki at one point... really don't think Urashima's someone that you should bother using hardening on, Luffy. * The kabuki-style delivery of "I'm going to be the king of pirates" is very well done. * Poor Tama! Holdem's a jackass. * We actually get to see Urashima crashing into Holdem's house, in yet another obvious 'hey, anime team, this is something for you to animate' scene from the manga. * Law gets an extended scene with seeing the sick Bepo, including a Room/Scan showcase and Bepo looking cute and Law being unable to keep being angry at him.
* The fight against the pirates and samurai in Bakura Town gets extended a fair bit in this episode. Luffy throws Nidai Kitetsu's scabbard around again, repeating the thing he did before. * This episode noticeably has a bunch of brief flashbacks to previous episodes. Anime episodes do this all the time to easily eat up like, ten or fifteen seconds of runtime. But I felt this one was particularly noticeable since it's to the previous episode which we already had a recap segment of before the episode begun. * Ball-de-boo!
* We get an adorable crayon drawing memory when Luffy remembers Zunisha one-shotting Jack's fleet. * Luffy and Zoro's synchronized neck-crick is pretty fun. Also fun is their super-speed when they simultaneously rescue Tama and steal the food barge. The question is, where is this super-speed when they were bamboozled by Batman and Gazelleman? * Unlike the anime, Holdem is able to turn his sword into a flaming segmented sword. It's like Zabimaru from Bleach, but on fire! * We get an extra scene of a random goon holding Kiku hostage and Zoro locking eyes with her and saying "I'm not going to help you", knowing full well she's pretending to be a damsel in distress. * Speed also gets to do something here! She gets to shoot Armament Haki'd arrows at Zoro and Kiku! In the manga she doesn't do anything while this is happening. * REDDO HAAAAAWK! * God damn that's a very satisfying Red Hawk. Such a pretty-looking one! This was the scene that a friend showed me that got me excited to sit down and watch the Wano arc in anime format. From Holdem shooting a lion's fire (how does that work?) and engulfing Luffy, to Tama's yelling, to the zoom-in to Luffy's angry eyes, to the orb of flame dissipating, the zoom-in to Luffy's angry face, the impact, the music... it's just Luffy beating up Holdem, who means jack-all in the grand scheme of things, but what a badass Red Hawk.
And I think that's a neat place to stop off, with the initial Hawkins-Urashima-Holdem opening prologue to Wano done with. I'm not sure how often I'll update this little watch-along series, but I certainly am enjoying myself!

Note
Yees, character game, how about one of the donquixote brothers? Either would be great ;)
Yes, yes, yes! You’re going to get both. I’ll do Rosi in another post. This one’s for the pink feathered bastard. 🕸🕷
I was hoping emojis had a flamingo emoji, but no such luck, so spiders it is. ↑
favorite thing about them:
Oh man, he is so super over the top extra. He just reminds me of Patsy from Absolutely Fabulous, except he gets better lines. Of course, Oda layers all of his villains, so Doff’s our chorus, in a way, even while being an instigator of a lot of harm, possibly in reaction to harm.
I think he’s amoral, but with that he’ll invest enough in people and infrastructure to get what he wants and some good can come from that.
Your work has made me view him in a more nuanced way, but he’s still my go-to villain cos he’s so much fun to write and explore.
So, apart from his personality, let’s say his pink coat. I love those coats (his and Rosi’s).
least favorite thing about them:
Well, he’s a bastard, right? Caused and inflicted a lot of harm. For the purpose of story though, as said above, he’s got other aspects that mean he definitely isn’t two-dimensional.
He was so chaotically evil, or indifferent, at Marineford, he really caused a lot of trouble. With the Whitebeards, with Oars Jr. (ah, his leg), but it was wonderful too. We particularly saw how he mistreated Riku Dold and Bellamy—so, y’know, as a real person he’d be pretty low down on my list of favourites, but Oda just went to town on making him a form of likeable and evil, whereas say, Walpole os Spandam don’t have the backbone or the sexy factor (backstories help of course).
Look, if he wasn’t an arsehole I wouldn’t have any writing material. So um, just the fact we haven’t seen him more often in Wano Arc (in reflection, feedback, or in the Reverie interlude), but that’s fine too. Doff will have his chance to cast his ito ito web again. Gonna edit my favourite pic in here, cos I’ve got an ‘after the cut” in this post.
Tumblr media
favorite line:
His three speeches are golden. The one about justice and the child of war and child of peace, and the victors writing history tells us so much about the OP world, but also the world in general.
In the brig—when he’s soliloquising to a very unimpressed Tsuru, about the ushering in of the huge era of chaos, now that he’s been taken down and the ties that have been holding all the governing bodies or powerful bodies in some form of detente (so the World Government can do its thing) are fraying like crazy. And then his Impel Down speech. I put it in a drabble but can’t remember it now. Ah, about power not lasting. Back to what do I like about Doffy? Even though he regards himself as a god, he also seems to have a pretty good handle on how quickly the winds of fortune change, and how ephemeral things are. He’s definitely a fighter, and not often at the bottom of the pack.
brOTP:
Does Doff do brOTPs? Yeah, maybe Vergo. It’d be good to learn more about their early days, and Tsuru in their own way. From your A Test of Endurance, I loved that chapter where I think you had Mihawk, Croc and Doff interacting, I think, or maybe just Croc and Mihawk, anyway, I remember having a discussion where you said they were all batshit crazy at Marineford, and it’s true. So I don’t know if these guys are supportive of each other in a brOTP way, but they’ve definitely got that frat competitive energy, albeit with a more sophisticated edge (or bigger cutting power).
I mean, I’d like to see him interact with a few others of that generation—Shanks, Marco.
OTP:
Doffadile: If we’re talking about healthy ships.
I don’t mind him with Vergo either, healthy or unhealthy ship. I’ve read fics of him with Monet and Viola, and that’s fine, but he needs to keep that edge he has. I actually like some of the crackier ships like Luffy and Doffy, which are obviously with canon pretty subverted.
Unhealthy ships, and I won’t call it an OTP, but yeah, I write Doff///Law and read it, but I don’t want Law to stay in that situation.
I’ve seen some crack ships of Doffy and Tsuru in fanart, with a love sick Doffy smitten for Tsuru, and Tsuru patronising him like crazy, and Doffy lapping it up. That appeals to my sense of the absurd and something that could possibly happen cos Doff’s all about thinking outside of the box.
nOTP:
Okay, I’ve read these ships, and sometimes I enjoy the work, and each to their absolute own. I know some folks don’t like what I write either, so I’ll just plunge in.
Not really keen on yes-con Doff///Law, though there’s some good stuff out there. The main reason being that it seems that Law never had the chance to make an independent life for himself so I kinda get a feeling of being trapped or of claustrophobia when I read it. So yeah, I know it doesn’t work for me.
If they meet as adult strangers I don’t mind so much, but the power imbalance usually means it’s not a go-to.  I mean, they really didn’t have a sweet relationship in canon.
Doff///Cora is not my go-to, but there are some stories I like, and I really like some of the art. Cora’s already had a tough life (same as Law). I kinda want the both of them to have some space to themselves at some time.
Otherwise, no-one really.
random headcanon:
Doff...hmm, I write him as such a bad villain...oh, I know! He definitely wears a g-string. He’s kinda vain like that (I mean, we’re talking about blowing Doffy all out of proportion here). I wouldn’t put it beyond him to wear a mankini and to wear it proud!
(I know you love him. Me too, but he has so much potential for any situation). He’s shameless. Also, yeah, he’s also on some step or stage of the sociopathic/psychopathic spectrum.
unpopular opinion:
I’ve seen it mentioned before, and since Dressrosa was published, but I think that some fanfic glosses over the fact that Doff’s done some pretty heinous things in canon, like redeeming him beyond recognition. Crack fics and fluff fics, AUs are another thing. But it can tip the other way (guilty) of making him even more heinous than he already is.
song i associate with them:
“Da ya think I’m sexy?” Particularly the lines: “If ya want my body, and ya think I’m sexy, c’mon sugar (NOT that Sugar) tell me so”
and
“I’m too sexy for my shirt
Too sexy for my shirt
So sexy it hurts”.
fave pic:
There are so many good ones, but I’ll go for the Croc and Doff one as fashion designers from the One Piece magazine, and I’ve posted that above.
Hope the above’s okay. I love a crack Doflamingo, but also a complete bastard, and also the amazing layered characterisation you have of him too.
Thanks for the ask. Law, Tashigi, Usopp, Zoro, Luffy, Marco Kid, Chopper and Doflamingo are completed!  Rosinante is lined up.
Just taking a few more (one or two) if anyone’s interested. One of the OP ladies?

Mister Sun
⤷ ficlet
part 1 |  part 2
Tumblr media
Ace x f!reader; romantic
⤷ synopsis: The only way to calm yourself down was by listening to Mister Sun by Barney. Sounds cute right? Don’t be a clown. This is a n g s t.
⤷ word count: 1,6k
⤷ a/n: aHHHHH heres my comeback from my hiatus 😎hope y’all liked it, i was writing when it was 4 AM and i downtripped to lots of sad songs, remembering how good and youthful life was before I became a boring old hag. das all folks, lemme know what u think as always! (((also im trying this new format just for ficlets/og works teehee)))
----
“Oh mister sun, sun, mister golden sun,” Ace cooed as his rough fingers gently combed through your hair, “please shine down on me.” You shift on his lap, clearly still startled from the nightmare, but unwinding as he continues his humming while swaying lightly.
He was so warm against the cold night.
“You feeling better?” His head lulled a bit to the side, his loud yawn permeating the night air. Guilt bloomed in your chest for waking him up in these delicate hours, but you couldn’t help but need comfort. Your late mother always sang Barney’s song to calm you when you were younger, so naturally it was the only way to unravel your nerves, despite it being a child’s song.
“Thanks for doing this, I know it’s not really your style.” You briefly apologized. He waved it off.
“No biggie, anything for my girl.” He grinned, his toothy smile shining against the moonlit sea. Your giggle follows right after, his smiles always made you feel like everything was gonna be okay.
“Love you babe,” you dreamily sigh, still high off broken sleep.
“I know.”
You nestled your head on the meatiest part of his thigh, and fell asleep. When silence pervaded the air, he pulled you tight to him and closed his eyes. The tranquility of the night made you follow suit a bit after.
All things continued well, you went fishing with Ace the next morning, catching a bigger fish than him and bragging about it to Marco.
“Cheater!” Ace kept chanting as he demanded a rematch. “You just got lucky, lemme show you how it’s really done.” Grumbling, you acquiesced to his ramblings and hooked on bait.
“Ho,ho. You’re going down, lover boy.” You bore your sole into the wood of the deck, readying yourself for battle.
“Ready!” He counted down, “Set! Go!”
Fishing lines cast into the sea, a brief moment passing by before a fish tugs on your line first. Messily reeling it in, your feet trip over themselves, cursing as the rod slipped through your sweaty grip. Meanwhile, Ace grunted as he fought against his big catch before victoriously reeling it in. As much as you hate admitting it, you lost.
“Yeah!!” Ace rejoiced, admiring his fish, “we’re eating good tonight boys! Fire up the grills!” The resounding cheers of the crew followed after.
Moments like these, seeing everyone, especially Marco, merrily hammered with booze and seeing Ace mingling with the crowd, occasionally falling asleep, yet his smile never fading. It was moments like these that you wished never left because eventually everything becomes a distant memory.
As a little girl, you believed nightmares disappear after mom sings you to sleep. As an adult, you realized nightmares are never really gone; instead it slowly builds itself in a steady, continuous stream until it becomes real.
It became hell.
The marines took Ace.
Whitebeard rampaged.
And one thing leads to the other, you find yourself alongside his little brother on the battlefield. Ace looked disparaged sitting atop of the execution platform, protected by the best of the best.
“Ace!” With a determined look raging through his pupils, he grit his teeth and dug his fingernails through the log he was carrying, “We’ll save you! Y/n and I, we’ll save you!” His promise rang throughout the battlefield, commencing the beginning of the end.
The battle ensues, one thing leads to another and Ace is free, running towards freedom.
Until Akainu provokes him.
“Ha, the loser from the dead generation finally met his time.” The magma man inched closer as the flames flickered off of Ace’s body, angry.
“Take that back.” Ace growled, his white-knuckled fist engulfed in his flames.
Akainu snickered. “In other words, he’s an eternal loser who will never surpass Roger. Making all his underlings call him ‘old man’ and ‘father’ or whatever.... he got stabbed because his stupid ‘sons’ believed every word he said.”
“The old man gave us a place where we belong,” Ace lunged forward, fist in front, swallowed with rage, “don’t make fun of the old man who saved my life!”
He dodged gracefully, turning on his heel to jab Ace in the rib. They exchange punches, the belligerent admiral having the upper hand due to Ace’s lagging and recklessness. Akainu’s eyes shifted from the fire fist to the strawhat.
Perfect, he thought, time to end this.
He leaped in the air towards Luffy, the magma on his fist leaving a trail behind him and a smile as wide as ever. He won.
His fist never connected with the strawhat.
It bore a hole through Ace instead.
Even better.
Overwhelming dread filled the battlefield, especially in Luffy’s unwavering faith, because holy shit you’re not supposed to see right through him. “Ace!” Marco called from the other side, soaring to his side while everyone froze in fear as they watched the events unfold. Whitebeard can only watch in lament, knowing that he did all that he could and it still wasn’t enough. Luffy promised to save him, but why does it feel like he’s the one Ace saved?
He was there, within your reach. Why couldn’t you do anything? Why didn’t you do anything?
How could you let him die? Out of all the things you could’ve done for him, you cried.
Pathetic.
He was right there.
You rushed into the rumbling battleground, skidding against the concrete to plant yourself next to him. Luffy’s head whipped to you, holding Ace in his shaking arms. “Y-y/n,” Luffy trembled, and the look in his eyes said it all. He’s dying.
Ace exchanged a few incoherent words with Luffy, so melancholic that he went into shock, mouth agape as his eyes rolled back into his skull.
Swapping places with Luffy, you held Ace’s head on your lap. “Hey, don’t cry,” he brushed the hair clinging to your wet face, “don’t make that face. Doesn’t look like you.” He joked as you pulled him closer to your chest with your foreheads touching and hands shaking as it was on either side of his cheeks, screaming in frustration as tears stained the ground and shamelessly dripped over his face. The warm air contrasted with the coldness of Ace’s body.
“You’re gonna be fine,” your eyes scanned for a doctor, “you’re gonna live, you’ll be fine!” You called out to the nearest medic, asking them to save him.
“I’m sorry ma’am, it’s already too late, not much to do!”
“Bullshit! You’re a fucking doctor right? What kind of a doctor can’t even save a man dying in front of him?”
Scared, the poor doctor frantically skirted away, while Ace stared into your orbs, admiring them one last time. “No need to be upset,” he nuzzled his cheek against your thigh, “he can’t save me. Nobody can. My insides are fried.”
“Don’t talk like that!” If he wasn’t injured, you would’ve slapped the living shit out of him. “You’re not dying. I refuse. Get up.”
“It’s no use.”
You heave up his weight, slinging his arm over your shoulder, only to come crashing back down. The others watched in pity because all you can do was repeatedly punch the ground in dismay like a child throwing a tantrum.
“You can make it!”
“Y/n.”
“Luffy promised we’d save you and I intend to keep my word.”
“Y/n.”
While watching you trying to save him in vain, unconscious tears wet his cheeks as he bit his lip. It broke his soul to know that he has to leave you like this and there’s nothing he can do to help you. He wants to live. For you. But he knows better than to dream, especially in the condition he’s in. He haphazardly tapped your face with the fading strength he had.
“Y/n, calm down. I’ll be fine. Please don’t cry. Listen to me, yeah?”
You nodded, knowing it was a lie, but acquiescing to hear your lover.
“God, I’m so tired Y/n.” He took a shallow breath before continuing, “I wanna sleep but I don’t wanna go.” I don’t want to leave you alone, hangs on his lips.
This was the end of the line. You knew it was. His stagnant breaths told you so.
All of your movements stop, frustration replaced with empty acceptance. Ace can’t remember you like this, you thought, it’d only be harder for him. “Go ahead,” you manage to show him a forced smile, contrasting against your red nose and puffy eyes, telling him it’s okay. It’s okay to go. He was not nearly convinced, but it was getting harder to fight the sleep overwhelming his crisp body.
“Go sleep,” you encouraged once more, “I’ll be here for you, waiting for you.” You choked on the words as his smile relaxed, eyes fluttering shut.
“Love you, y/n.”
“I know.”
“Thank you for loving me.”
Clenching your fists, you bit the insides of your cheeks, hoping to drown out the deafening world. Everyone was screaming, but your heart screamed louder. Don’t go, your heart pleaded, I need you. Please don’t leave me.
But you knew better, Ace would’ve wanted to know that you’d be okay without him. You had to be strong. For him.
This is all that I can do for him.
Before all life left his body, you sang to him one last time, hoping it would provide him as much comfort as it did for you.
“Oh mister sun, sun, mister golden sun. Please shine down on me.”
The wind gushed by, taking his last breath with it. The end of the beginning was concluding, clearing a new path for a new era in its place. The war raged, filled with metal clashing and the wailing of crestfallen loved ones.
His vivre card burned, crumbling into thin air, as if it never existed.
Please wake me up from this nightmare.

Ontological
on·to·log·i·cal (adj.) Existing as such; metaphysical.
Eustass Kidd and Killer, during and afterwards.
(Or: Alliances are made. Killer and Zoro take care of some unfinished business.)
Tags: Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Aftermath of Violence (and SMILE), Worst Gen Reunion Pre-Party
Chapter 1. Chapter 2. No additional warnings apply. Read Chapter 4 here.
***
The Kidd Pirates arrive as one: Kidd up front, grim-faced and radiating Haki, with Killer to his right and Heat to his left and Wire trailing behind, eyes on their backs. Ahead, a handful of houses cluster around the slow trickle of a stream and cherry trees that dot the ground in gentle patterns. Everything about it whispers sweet promises of harmony, of a place to rest their weary heads and heal wounds barely starting to scar.
Kidd doesn’t trust any of it one fucking bit.
People are gathered in a loose group, conversations hushed and hard to make out from afar. A Marine’s wet dream, really, with how many bounties Kidd recognizes at a glance – or their worst nightmare, given Monkey D. Luffy is one of them.
That straw-hatted head turns and keeps turning into an angle that would snap any neck not made of rubber. A smile, bright with surprise.
“Oh? Spikey! And Spikey’s friend!”
Completely unaffected by the wave of tangible will Kidd pushes on them all, and after days of sharing a prison cell it just makes Kidd’s mouth tug into a grin. “Strawhat.”
(Through his mask Killer mutters, “Spikey’s friend”, like he’s contemplating if he likes it or not. Not that Strawhat would change a thing about it either way.)
Both Strawhat’s and Trafalgar’s crews are there, at least partially. Kidd spots the polar bear and those two idiots staring right at him – one of which jumps to his feet and runs inside – while that blonde guy with the kicks and Zoro flank their captain with little subtlety.
So they’re alive after all. Seems like Strawhat is not the only one capable of surviving an encounter with Kaido.
Still, Kidd isn’t here for handshakes and kisses. This is business and the way Strawhat’s expression turns a little pensive proves the brat has some braincells rattling in the attic, dusty as it must be up there.
“Where’s Trafalgar? We gotta talk.”
Strawhat just groans. “Another meeting? It’s lunch time! Sanji, you promised lunch.”
“That I did”, says Blondie around a mouthful of smoke. He nods at Kidd, curly brow raised. “You. Spikey. Any of you got a problem with eel? We’re having unagi.”
One more annoying than the other. Heat oohs behind Kidd, however, quiet enough it stays between them. That una-stuff must be good, then.
Kidd gives Killer a look; Killer tilts his head. Your choice. Kidd sighs.
“Fine, whatever. Hurry it up, we’re not staying.”
“Hey!”, the bear pipes up from the sidelines. The very moment Kidd’s eyes land on him, his frowned ferocity turns bashful and he looks to his feet, ears folded. “Sorry, um. I think we should wait for Captain.”
Strawhat makes an indistinct noise around the something-on-a-skewer he just shoved in his mouth. Once done, he uses the stick to point in Kidd’s general direction. “Nah, they’re okay. Right, Spikey?”
Before Kidd can utter the fuck you already on his lips, the swordsman to Strawhat’s right hums. “Luffy”, Zoro murmurs in that serious voice of his, one that demands to be heard without much effort. “Bepo’s right.”
And his gaze is focused on Killer, not Kidd, an arm casually coming to rest on his swords – there’s a similar tension in the way Killer holds himself, on his guard despite the lack of aggression in the air. (Breathing shallowly like he does when he’s trying to maintain the little control he has these days, like it’s better to go without altogether than laugh in company like this.)
Kidd glares. The metal around him starts to tremble.
“Eustass.”
Only one person says his name like that. The snarl on Kidd’s lips doesn’t go anywhere, especially with the indifferent glance Trafalgar Law acknowledges him with as he steps out of the shadows. All disgruntled like Kidd disturbed his beauty sleep or crashed a particularly boring match of chess or… any other thing a guy with that long a stick up his ass might do in his downtime.
Eugh, maybe this wasn't such a good idea after all.
“Trafalgar. Sure took your sweet time.”
The guy’s eyes narrow a little; Kidd smirks. The gears are already in motion under that ridiculously fluffy hat of his and well, Kidd did promise Killer he’d be civil. For the most part.
“You’re the one trespassing.” Trafalgar’s voice is all smooth disdain, no nonsense. “What do you want?”
Straight to the point. There are some qualities to be appreciated about him, arrogant prick or not. Kidd spits on the ground.
“Alright, listen up. Strawhat, you too.”
Strawhat actually does, giving him a curious look over the bowl of sauce-drenched rice he’s currently tearing into. Lunch time, right. Trafalgar merely blinks, unimpressed.
Rolling his shoulders, Kidd lets himself feel the ache of metal on scars, familiar, anchoring him in his body. The presence of his crew around him settles his senses, solid and always there in the periphery.
For days he’s breathed around the wrath in his lungs, spoken every word with the thrumming of his pulse in his throat. When Kidd smiles, it’s with lips red as blood and teeth bared like fangs.
There was a decision to make, and Kidd has made it.
“That war of yours? We want in.”
*
Later, much later, Kidd turns his back and Killer follows.
Heat and Wire are long gone, sent back to let the others know and prepare the Punk for battle. There’s much to be done still and little time to do it – Kidd thinks of the hell that will rain upon those who dared cross them and knows it will be worth it. This time, there will be no retreat. No mercy. Whatever the outcome, be it victory or death, it will be painted in shades of red.
Tomorrow, they sail for Onigashima.
Killer is next to him until he isn’t. Kidd blinks, stops, glances over his shoulder to see Killer's hand fall to the swords at his side.
“You.”
Amidst the sprawling fields between them and the hideout stands Zoro. The wind makes the grass surge like waves; it touches upon a face that has lost the guise of civility to reveal the demon underneath. This isn’t happening, shoots through Kidd’s mind, not again, and he growls as Haki gathers within him, ready to burst–
“Wait.”
Killer’s hand is on his chest, big and strong over the war drum of Kidd’s heart. “Wait”, Killer repeats and the calm of his voice cracks apart on a chuckle. Kidd’s gaze moves from the tension in Killer’s arm to Zoro’s eye and the recognition that sparks there.
Kidd remembers: Cuts across Killer’s chest, overlapping, all three of them deep and guaranteed to scar. Killer’s tightlipped silence over who did it, who hurt him–
“Come closer and I’ll tear you apart”, a venomous hiss more than strained with how hard Kidd’s jaw is clenched but he listens to Killer, always has when Killer’s this serious about something.
All Zoro does is stare at Killer’s mask, a gaze sharp enough to pierce layers of paint and welded metal. He says: “Those swords aren’t yours to wield. You should give them back.”
Killer huffs out an amused breath and for once, it’s genuine. “It can’t be helped. Someone took my scythes.”
An amusement that Zoro seems to share with the slightest uptilt of his mouth, “Is that so”, idle yet the threat in his stance goes nowhere. “What was it again? ‘Don’t talk down to the shogun’… or something along those lines.”
Killer’s fingers clench where they’re tangled in Kidd’s shirt. Zoro looks from that up to Kidd, smile growing all the more lethal.
“You didn’t tell him?”
Worded like a question when it’s not even close to one, and Kidd tries not to bristle, he really does. As if Zoro knows shit about anything, about them, about the living nightmare Killer’s been stuck in since–
Half a step and Killer shifts between them, sword half-way out of its sheath. Hisses, “Leave him out of this”, and Killer laughs despite the anger begging to be heard in there somewhere.
“Orochi means nothing to me. Nothing. He’ll die a dog’s death just like the rest of them.”
Kidd might not get what the hell they’re going on about but there’s real hurt in it, too, and suddenly all he wants is for Zoro to laugh. To mock Killer so Kidd can make good on the promise he gave his partner the day they went to sea and slaughter him like all the bastards that came before him.
Then… Zoro hums and that aura is gone, snuffed out with a blink and a scratch to bright green hair. “I kept the scythes, y’know. Would be a waste not to let them taste a fair battle.”
Killer doesn’t relax as much as he exhales a tired sigh. His sword is sheathed; a moment later his hold on Kidd drops and Kidd almost stumbles, only now realizing how hard he was pushing against the immovable line of Killer’s arm.
With steady hands, Killer unties the two shortswords from his waist and crosses the distance to hand them over. “A bit far to go for some stolen blades”, Killer tells him, an edge of annoyance there that Zoro shrugs off casually.
Kidd watches the interaction with narrow-eyed focus, waiting for the step out of line that never comes. Zoro meets his gaze only briefly, the eyebrow over his blind eye twitching upwards. As cocky and infuriating as his captain, Kidd’s mouth opens before he can stop himself.
“Try a stunt like that again and you’re dead, Pirate Hunter.”
The swordsman smirks, “I’ll take my chances”, before he turns to leave. Damn-near strolling back to his crew with a jaw-cracking yawn, and Kidd grinds his teeth and lets him.
Fucking Strawhats.
Yet Killer is still staring after him, still hesitating. “The girl”, he calls after Zoro. “The one who laughed. Is she alive?”
Zoro stops, glances over his shoulder, a little puzzled. “Toko? Yeah, she’s safe.” A pause. “They executed her father. A good man.”
Killer’s head lowers. “What a shame”, he agrees, too quiet for the other to understand him. Zoro walks on and so does Killer, a step or two ahead before he tilts his mask at Kidd, waiting.
“You coming, Captain?”
Kidd banishes all thoughts of their rivals – allies, for now – out of his head and joins Killer.
And Kidd stays close, perhaps too close; their hands brush every few steps. With a fond huff, Killer’s fingers hook around Kidd’s and doesn't let go all the way to the Punk.

Hey hey hey!
This is technically my third time trying to post these but they won’t post and if it gives me problems again, I’m gonna go postal.
Down below I am going to give you snippets of the Strawhats daily life and what they do during quarantine, as always my HC’s are bullet points but somehow also little stories. I don’t know how I work either. It will also be mostly an AU Modern life just cause on the sea I don’t know how it would really effect them? Other than in fights and everyone would have to debate do you get six feet away and try to duke it out or do you fight like normal and just really sanitize afterwards
During this quarantine I am home 24/7 and would be more than happy to talk, I’m figuring out now how to steal episodes of different shows so that i can make AMV’s so stay tuned for that,
Lets seriously start a discord
Or come talk to me on twitter!!! <3
Luffy: Is really glad to not have to work or do anything really, they live with most of their friends and the ones they don’t live with, well they never claimed they wouldn’t go out so its not a promise broken really. He doesn’t know much about the virus except what everyone else tells him but he does misunderstand the “high risk=old” thing and fights anyone for an entire day who tries to go near his grandpa, and while Garp and everyone else want to correct him it’s kind of cute so they let it slide and send all the newbies to talk to Garp(okay Aokiji sends Akainu but nobody stopped him so they all go down with that secret)
Zoro: “the bars are whAT?!” is not fucking happy. He expresses this every day and let me tell you when the liquor stores closed down for not being essential it took several hours to calm him down and for Sanji to be like “i know a guy” and everyone was immediately like ?? Usually Luffy says that??? and by knowing a guy, Sanji meant Judge has several cellars dedicated to alcohol so yes, they did acquire some alcohol. And thankfully Judge can’t even leave his house to track anyone down so was it really even stolen to begin with?
Nami: Has so many side hustles she isn’t even worried about money, what she is worried about is people who don’t have supplies or food, so with Sanji they go around just making sure their neighborhood/relatives(that they like)/friends have everything they need and let me tell you when they saw people hoarding and over buying? Since police can’t go out for every little thing, you really can’t prove if they beat the shit out of you and left you only with necessities. Nor will you because once the other guys find out?? Oh its on, do not panic buy around these kids, they’ll fuck you up like it’s their job.
Usopp: Swings wildly from believing they have COVID19 and that it doesn’t even exist and somehow its all a way to control the masses(their hysteria knows no bounds) Usopp doesn’t go out much and cleans the crap out of everything every 3-4 hours just to make sure, they are considered essential at their job being an engineer so they 100% go out in a hazmat suit, works in a completely sterile environment and does not touch anything in the suit until they have taken a shower and removed their clothes from the day. Are they overreacting? Yes. Do they care? Absolutely not. Because if they get sick there's a 100000000% chance everyone in the household will get sick and that’s on Usopp, but they do make funny videos when their home with Zoro and Luffy about how the virus is affecting them.
Sanji: As previously stated he’s okay on money(they all are with how Nami runs their finances) and has taken up cooking meals for the elderly(making sure his dad(Zeff) stays healthy) and also beating the shit out of the people hoarding and trying to upsell supplies. Its one thing to joke, and hey Sanji can take a joke, but he can’t handle anyone going without because of stinginess. Sanji also, because he’s literally the purest child starts posting videos on how to make something delicious and also nutritious taste good on a budget, or with a picky eater who doesn’t like vegetables *cough cough* Luffy *cough cough*. He helps Zeff with the restaurant but makes people tip the servers at least 20%,
Chopper: Is stressed the fuck out, at every turn theres something new with the virus, he’s got one more exam to pass and “they’ve changed it from being in class to online which changes the rules and if he fails or has questions theres nobody there to help him-” and god save the queen Law comes in like a knight in shining armor and is like “I’ll be there to help you answer some questions you have a difficult time on” and choppers like “wut no that’s cheating” and Law and Robin are both like “yo it’s not like in the field you won’t be able to consult other doctors so it’s not” and choppers now suddenly fine with the not-cheating. While he’s not freaking out about exams, he’s freaking out about his essential friends, and that’s almost worse. Law’s thinking of writing him an anxiety prescription until all this is over(Law is also in panic mode 25/7).
Robin: calm, cool and collected, has a contingency plan for her original contingency plan. No peanut butter? She can make it. No fresh meat? Frozen will do just fine. Somebody is buying more than what they need and trying to mark it up? “Franky.” and like that the problems were handled. 100% helps Usopp and Law and Chopper with their anxiety about this, while she is concerned she also goes about her relatively normal daily business, like reading outside on a sunny day, going to the park with Luffy(they just walk, they don’t touch anything) practicing social distancing, washing her hands a bit more. (honestly everyone be like robin)
Franky: Is fine up until the store runs out of cola and now it’s fucking war. Him and Zoro are devising a plan to topple the world and Luffy will join in only because he is a child of chaos. While he’s not being melodramatic, he’s doing house repairs for the low and yard work(with Zoro and Luffy's nonessential asses) for older people who can’t get outside and do it and are too old, or for new moms and dad, single parent households, the whole shabang. If you don’t have money they take I.O.U’s because one day, they’ll need a favor that’s just their destiny.
Brook: Was immediately placed on lockdown for being the oldest of the group(mostly as a joke but the younger ones do go to the store for him, even Usopp) but he spends his time making music and funny videos so people can have a laugh. He’ll do concerts online and remake songs about the coronavirus, and even review some other songs(kind of like Mr. Rogers and Bob Ross, he’s so affectionate) he puts up halloween decorations mixed with Christmas decorations and the entire neighborhood follows suit and one morning he and the gang walk around in renaissance gear and scream “bring out yer dead!” and while the neighborhood thinks it's funny, the police do not(but they aren’t fast enough to catch the heathens).
Jimbei: Doesn’t see his people as much as he’d like but, thankfully they social distance and walk in the park to hold him over. He also spends a lot of his time helping the elderly, and also other people in need. And if a few people who try to upsell things are suddenly hospitalized, Law’s not going to inquire about the increase in assault victims and if he doesn’t inquire and the people don’t file a claim with the police, did it even happen? Jimbei works with Franky sometimes but mostly handles his own neighborhood and stopping punks from doing dumb shit(see Eustass for example) and if the gang sneaks over at night to hang out with Jimbei well he thinks its sweet and also dumb but he loves it.
Thanks for reading! Let’s be active and talk rn!!!!!!!!

FEATURE SERIES: My Favorite One Piece Arc with Daniel Barnes
Tumblr media
I love One Piece and I love talking to people who love One Piece. And with the series going on 23 years now, there is a whole lot to talk about. As the series is about to publish its 1000th chapter, a true feat in and of itself, we thought we should reflect upon the high-seas adventure and sit down with some notable names in the One Piece fan community and chat about the arcs they found to be especially important, or just ones they really, really liked.
Welcome to the next article in the series "My Favorite One Piece Arc!"
My next guest in this series is Daniel Barnes, writer for the Aggretsuko comic, and his original graphic novel The Black Mage. For my chat with him, he chose the Marineford arc, in which Luffy drops into a World Government headquarters in a desperate race against time to save his "brother" Ace from execution.
A note on spoilers: If you haven't seen the Marineford arc yet, this interview does contain major plot points. Watch the Marineford arc starting RIGHT HERE if you'd like to catch up or rewatch!
Tumblr media
Dan Dockery: Let’s say that for some reason, I get to the end of Impel Down, just before Luffy & Co. drop into Marineford, and I’m like “I’m done. This is it. I can’t handle any more One Piece.” In one sentence, what do you tell me to keep me going?
Daniel Barnes: Why are you stopping before you reach the payoff of everything you’ve read so far?
I like that! How long have you been into One Piece?
When I first started consuming One Piece in earnest, ironically enough, I was in the Navy at the time. It was 2014, and up until that point, my only exposure had been the 4Kids dub on FoxBox.
Tumblr media
Nice. I love a good FoxBox reference. Was it recommended to you? Because I know that, when a lot of people start One Piece, it’s like “FINE. I’ll watch One Piece. You’ve convinced me.”
I don’t consume anime as voraciously as I did back then. Back then, I was an anime vacuum, but I was also in this weird spot where I was semi-depressed. But someone told me, “You gotta try One Piece, it’s the best.” And my first reaction was “Umm, the art style’s kinda weird, though.” But they told me “You’ll get over it,” and the thing that made me finally take that leap was Gurren Lagann, which also had an unusual art style and then became one of my favorite things ever. So I figured I should at least give it a shot.
That’s something I’ve heard a few times. Because in other big series like Naruto and Bleach, the character designs are much more proportionate and straightforward. And I felt the same way...until I watched it, and realized the art style is PERFECT for what it is. So, Marineford is pretty much the halfway point of the series, with characters returning from all over the place. Were there any that you were excited to see come back?
There’s a few of them. I always love it when Mihawk shows up, but I think the big one is Whitebeard. Because up until this point, he’s just sitting around and you know he’s a big deal but you’re always wondering why he’s a big deal. And then you find out in Marineford. I enjoy seeing characters that are kind of defined as the “power ceiling” in an anime universe get to do stuff, and it was cool to see him make the entire world quake.
Tumblr media
I think I called it in an article a “Be Quiet, The Parents Are Talking” character. You’ll go through Luffy getting new power-ups and increasingly strong villains and these seemingly insurmountable admirals with their elemental powers and then Whitebeard comes in, and he’s leaps and bounds above everyone. And like you said, for the most part, he’s just sitting down beforehand.
Yeah, he’s sitting down drinking a giant gourd of sake. His name is Whitebeard, but he doesn’t have a beard. Got a real Hulk Hogan vibe to him. Who is this guy? But then you finally see him after all this time, and that’s the magic of One Piece. You see all of these things over the years and you wonder what part they’ll play and then it finally hits you and their role and strength becomes clear.
Marineford, obviously, is all built around Ace. And what you get out of the arc probably depends on how much you enjoy Ace’s character. How did you feel about him? Did it make you emotional at all? I know he has the one scene with Garp where they talk about finding your purpose in life, and that really got to me, even though I’m not the biggest fan of Ace.
Okay, I think Ace looks cool and I think he has good powers, but I didn’t really care that much when he died. I didn’t really know him enough.
Tumblr media
Were there any characters that you did get attached to or like a lot in Marineford? I know you said you liked Whitebeard and Mihawk, but who was your Marineford MVP? Who shines brightest among all those crazy diamonds?
Okay, so the cop-out answer is probably Luffy. He’s one of the weakest characters there and he manages to survive and he plays such a big role by rallying everyone despite being constantly outmatched. So, objectively, Luffy. But maybe I give it to Coby, because Coby stands his ground against Akainu. He gives you hope that maybe the Marines can change their ways one day and when he refuses to move in front of an Admiral, I thought that was a real stand-out, awesome moment.
So Ace dies, Whitebeard just wrecks Akainu and throws him into a pit, and then, out of nowhere, Blackbeard shows up. Whitebeard beats up Blackbeard and Blackbeard’s forces kill Whitebeard. What do you think about Blackbeard as a villain? Because he’s so unlikeable. He’s underhanded, he whines whenever he gets hurt, he’s super pompous. He has cool powers, but there’s nothing cool about who he is.
He’s super interesting, to me. He has a mystery around him with his two Devil Fruit powers, and he doesn’t really fit into any shonen villain stereotype. He’s an inverse of Luffy, but not in all of the super obvious ways. When you first see him in Jaya, you see him start with basically nothing, and you watch him work through the system and the powers that be, just like Luffy. They’re both trying to achieve the same thing and reach the same goal. But Blackbeard’s methods are different.
Tumblr media
Yeah, Luffy will punch you in the face, while Blackbeard will stab you in the back.
And getting to see that evolution is great, because they easily could’ve just said, boom, here’s the next big bad guy and given him to you without context. But it’s like I said about One Piece earlier, where it shows you stuff over time and gets you to look forward to what will happen with it later. That’s Blackbeard’s whole appeal.
You talked earlier about Coby standing up to Akainu, ready to die for his beliefs. And then Shanks comes and stops the war. How did you feel about that? Because we’re all still waiting to see what his deal is (which as you said is a big part of the continuing appeal of One Piece,) but were you hyped to see him show up?
I thought it was cool, because One Piece has done a good job of establishing him as an awesome guy. He’s a lot like Zero from Mega Man X, where he shows up at the beginning, they imply how powerful he is, they make the main character want to be as strong as him, and then they take him away and only show him sparingly. So whenever Shanks drops by, he's been handled so well that you’re just on the edge of your seat wondering what he’s gonna do.
Tumblr media
So, after the war is over, Jimbei has to remind Luffy that he still has things worth fighting for. And then, the timeskip. Were you aware that a timeskip was coming?
Oh yeah. It’s kind of hard to exist on social media and not get a bunch of these little hints about what’s gonna happen. But that was my goal with One Piece for a little while: I’m gonna get to the timeskip. I have to get there. It’s coming, I know it’s coming, I don’t know when it’s coming, but I just have to reach it.
There are so many big moments in this arc, but looking back at it, are there any moments that stand out as prime One Piece to you?
The obvious one, for me, is when Luffy goes Third Gear and punches the giant out of the way. That’s so cool and such quintessential One Piece. A giant on an arena made of ice and a rubbery kid inflates his fist to make it huge and knocks him around. It’s so weird and it works.
  ONE PIECE LIGHTNING ROUND!
  Favorite One Piece character?
  Usopp.
  Favorite One Piece villain?
  Crocodile.
  Favorite One Piece arc?
  Sabaody Archipelago.
Which Devil Fruit would you eat if you had the choice?
  Bellamy’s Spring Spring fruit.
If you had to live on any island in the One Piece universe, which would you choose?
Does the Gran Tesoro from the Film: Gold movie count? That one’s pretty dope.
  Favorite One Piece fight?
Luffy vs Blueno, when he first reveals the Second Gear.
One Piece moment that made you cry the hardest?
When the Franky Gang beats up Usopp and Nami finds him and Usopp is like “I’m useless. I can’t do anything.” Whenever Usopp gets beaten up, his nose gets all crooked and he loses teeth. There’s so many cartoon-ey visual indicators for Usopp in pain. It got me.
One Piece moment that made you cheer the loudest?
When Luffy punches the Celestial Dragon in the face. It’s so cathartic.
Tumblr media
Stay tuned for the next installment of "My Favorite One Piece Arc" as we speak with One Piece Podcast Co-Host and storyboard artist Steve Yurko about his favorite One Piece arc: Baratie!!

Writing prompt: Nami and Vivi are cuddling together. Nami is absently petting her head and asks, "Hey do you want me to braid your hair?"
Send me writing prompts. Status: Accepting
@optigeress here’s a tag in case you’re interested. I know you like them as well ^^
Note: Uh. I guess this takes place before Nami gets sick. God, it’s been forever since I’ve seen Alabasta. I also took some liberties with the prompt as this got away from me.
“You have such pretty hair, Vivi,” Nami said, interrupting the cozy silence that had settled between them in the comfort–and privacy, which was most important–of her bedroom. It wouldn’t be much longer until Going Merry reached Alabasta and Nami intended on soaking up every last fleeting, precious moment she had with her. It was easier to do that when they didn’t have to hear Zoro and Sanji bickering or Luffy and Usopp wrestling out on deck, so here they were, cuddling in Nami’s room and pretending their moments weren’t numbered.
“Oh, you’re just saying that,” Vivi tittered, waving off Nami’s compliment with one hand and cupping her cheek with the other, a pink blush blooming across cheeks rounded by a shy smile.
Nami smiled, a small chuckle in her throat, as she leaned in close and laid a kiss on one of those rosy cheeks. Adorable. “I wouldn’t lie, Vivi,” she said, gently grasping Vivi’s ponytail in her hand and running her fingers along the silken threads, giving it a light flick when she ran out of hair. “It’s so soft. And such a pretty color. You must take such good care of it.”
“Stop, you’re too sweet,” Vivi squealed, hiding behind her hands. She spread her fingers and peeked at Nami through the gaps. “My father says I have my mother’s hair. She died when I was really young. I never really got to know her, so this is all I have of her.”
“Mm.” The smile that had taken residence on Nami’s face withered away. She rested her cheek against Vivi’s soft hair, absently petting the blue locks.
“Nami?” Vivi said, voice laced with concern. “Did I say something wrong?”
“I lost my mother at a young age, too,” Nami murmured, continuing to stroke Vivi’s hair.
“Oh,” Vivi said, quietly. “I’m–I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you.”
Nami pulled back so she could look into Vivi’s brown eyes, those round, kind eyes crinkled with concern. “You didn’t do anything wrong, Vivi,” she said. She shrugged. “It’s not something I talk about. But I feel like I can with you.”
Vivi wore a sad smile as she took Nami’s hand in hers. Her fingers curling around Nami’s were a nice, small comfort. “I like talking with you, too, Nami,” she said. “It’s nice to have a girl I can talk to.” She looked at the opposite wall, sighing softly. “I love Karoo and my father and Igaram, but it can be lonely.”
Without a warning Vivi frowned, her lower lip trembling. She squeezed her eyes shut, her brow furrowing as a small sob claimed her, shaking her shoulders. Vivi clamped a hand over her mouth, attempting to stifle the sounds coming out of her.
Nami wrapped her arms around Vivi, holding the princess closer, stroking her hair and quietly shushing her. She could only begin to imagine what was running through Vivi’s mind, but she would try: Vivi was possibly weighed down by the responsibility of stopping her country’s civil war, uncertain of Igaram’s and her friends in Baroque Works’ fates, and maybe the nigh unbearable loneliness of it all was getting to her. Yes, Vivi had Karoo and Nami and the others, but Nami couldn’t reach into Vivi and pull the loneliness and the responsibilities of her title out of her like she could pull on a loose thread in a sweater.
She wished she could.
Instead she held Vivi, rocking her in her arms, and she let her cry herself out.
When Vivi had had her fill, she burrowed herself into Nami’s embrace. “I’m sorry,” she whispered into Nami’s shoulder.
Nami closed her eyes, giving Vivi a small squeeze. “You don’t have to apologize around me, Vivi,” she murmured into Vivi’s hair. “Okay?”
Vivi hesitated. “O-okay.”
“Hey,” Nami said softly, her fingers coming to a stop at the base of Vivi’s ponytail. “Can I ask you something?”
“Of course.”
“Can I…” Nami paused. “Can I braid your hair?”
“Uh, sure,” Vivi said, sounding taken aback.
“You sure it’s okay?” Nami asked, not wanting to force Vivi into anything just to make Nami happy.
Vivi lifted herself up so she could look into Nami’s eyes. “Yes, I’m sure,” she said with a nod, wiping away the last of her tears, her voice bright.
Nami smiled, wanting to bask in Vivi’s warmth. “Okay,” she said. “Sit down in front of the couch and I’ll go get a comb.”
“Okay,” Vivi said, doing as she was told while Nami got up off the couch and grabbed a comb.
Nami studied the comb in her hand, then looked at Vivi, who’d pulled her hair out its ponytail. She frowned. Vivi’s hair was so much thicker than Nami’s. She hoped the comb would be enough.
Vivi smiled at Nami as Nami padded back to the couch. Nami returned her smile, saying, “Thanks for letting me do this,” she said, settling in behind Vivi. She smiled bashfully as she took in handfuls of Vivi’s hair, murmuring, “I’ve…always kinda wanted to play with it. Even when we were ‘enemies.’”
Vivi tilted her head back, stretching her neck so she could look up at Nami, smiling so brightly that Nami wanted to bend down and lay a kiss on those soft lips that had called to her even when they thought they were on opposite sides.
So she did.
Nami pressed a soft kiss into Vivi’s lips, her fingers finding the curve of Vivi’s jaw, pulling back before the princess of Alabasta could properly respond. Vivi blinked up at her, adorably confused. Nami chuckled and ran her fingers through Vivi’s hair, the color of the sky on bright summer days when she and Nojiko played in Bellemere’s tangerine grove.
Nami and Vivi fell back into the easy silence they’d enjoyed previously as Nami combed Vivi’s hair, crimped by her tight ponytail. Nami was by no means an expert in hair braiding, having grown up in a household with a sister with hair as short as her own, a mother who insisted on styling her hair just so–and this was before she’d been forced into the lifestyle of a cat burglar at the mercy of a tyrant–but she could style a simple braid, even if the end results weren’t perfect.
And Vivi didn’t seem to mind. She closed her eyes and seemed happy enough to let Nami play with her hair, happy to be closer to her. When she inspected her appearance in the mirror, turning her head this way and that, her eyes shone brightly, overwhelming Nami with the need to pull Vivi into a kiss before the words “Thank you” fully left her lips.

Basically a review of OP episode 503 ig
Currently rewatching post-war arc (in the dub so I don't have any screenshots for u guys sry) and theres a few things id like to point out.
During a conversation Dadan once had with Garp, they were talking about Roger. Garp said that even if they were facing powerful enemies, he would never run away because he wouldnt dare leaving his comrads behind; it wasnt an option for him. Obviously we see this in Ace. But ALSO, isnt this what he did with Katakuri? It was a little different cuz of the setting mostly, but he separated himself from his crew to fight off katakuri, and lied to them about being okay so they didn't worry (he was already getting his ass kicked by then, so he just made that stupid smile and told them not to worry (or smth like that, I can remember the exact line) (that smile was so gross and fake cuz he fucking sucks at lying). Also he said roger destroyed a buncha soldiers cuz they mouthed off his men. That's what Ace tried to do but instead he died. :(
"The pain he went through just made him hold on tighter to the ones he loved" -Garp, about Roger. "Despite his flaws and his bad reputation, his crew still trusted him completely." -also Garp, about Roger. These both sound a lot like Luffy AND Ace.
When Dogra got home and told everyone about Sabo's ship being shit down and him dying (which we all know didnt happen, thank fuck), (by the way the absolutely lost looks on Ace's and Luffy's faces with the sudden silence hurt like a bitch), Luffy started crying and said "WE SHOULDNT'A LET HIM GO, IT'S ALL OUR FAULT". Which fucking says something about him (thinking of episodes 913-915 when he goes fucking berserk, but before that he learns that Kaido probably killed Tama and he says "I should've escorted them..!" (*ugly cries*)). Ace also reacted pretty similarly-- "Sabo...why didn't we go back into town and bring him back here?! We're so stupid!" And he gets mad and asks where he could find the bastard that killed him (obviously not getting a good answer since it was a fucking celestial dragon ugh). That is what Luffy does, in present time. He results to anger first, not sadness. Not sure when he learned to do that but I'm 99 percent sure it was from Ace. Also the blaming himself thing? High chance thats ALSO from Ace. Who else would teach him that self hating behaviour?!
Dadan pins Ace down to stop him from going after the Celestial Dragon to calm him down, telling him he cant do anything, he's not big or strong enough to do anything and he'll be killed as soon as he tries anything, especially since it was the whole country -the whole WORLD- that killed Sabo. He can't do anything. And then they tied him to a tree outside to let him cool off. Oh yeah then he also told luffy to stop crying like a little girl or else he'll- (and he didn't finish the sentence). ...Ok maybe thats why luffy started being more angry than sad.
This is where things get a little more :( . Ace reads the letter Sabo sent them before he died. As he reads, he walks to the end of the forest, to a cliff overlooking the ocean. And starts fucking bawling (btw the voice actor who had Ace's childhood part did not do a very good job, no where near as in character and real as Coleen Clickenberg did with all of Luffy's crying scenes. She was spot on.) ...do you see where im going with that? He isolated himself before letting himself feel sad. It was all rage and then calm beforehand. Y-you see where im going with that. Dont make me say it.
"How's Luffy doing, is he any better?" "Well...he hasnt been eating much, but he still eats twice as much as we do". Oh look, That's what happened after Ace died too. There's a behavioral pattern that hasnt gone away. Not sure why it wouldve tho.
Luffy is mopeing, lying on the ground in a similar setting ace was at when he cried. Hes thinking about some of the things Sabo said, like how theyre gonna sail the seas together, and he clenches his hands into tight, shaking fists. After Ace shows up and hits him, and talking abt some other stuff I don't feel like relaying, Luffy tightens his grip on the straw hat and tells ace, whimpering, he wants to get stronger (and stronger, and stronger, and stronger and stronger and....) And he wants to be the strongest in the world. "And then, I'll protect everyone. I won't lose anyone I care about". He gets stronger mainly to protect the people he loves. And then he asks ace to promise he won't die. To which he hits Luffy again and tells him he should be more worried about himself dying first. And then the famous line that hurts like a bitch- "I'm NEVER going to DIE!" And then this hopeful music comes on (fucking damnit funimation, u gotta do this? Really??) Also he says he wont die as long as he has a wussy little brother to protect. ...FUCK. Ok, the fist clenching is a thing he does all the fucking time, usually when he gets mad. This was different because he wasnt mad, he was sad. He clenched his fist because thinking about it hurt. Which, huh, sounds a lot like his whole episode after waking up from his 2 week coma on the polar tang. To try and stop the mental pain of those horrendous memories, he resulted to physically pain. He hurt himself. So, He clenches his fists in times like these to fight off the mental pain and the urge to cause himself physical pain. Guys, our boy is bad at emotions, help him. ....ok this paragraph is longer than I anticipated so ill dumb down the rest of it ig. Next part, him asking ace to promise he wont die. The music, the body language, the over change in mood- this comforts him. He stopped hiding his face and silently sobbing after ace said this. OH YEAH! didn't he tell jinbe not to die when they parted ways in Totto Land? And then, hes missing still in Wano and we see Luffy is worried....but convinced Jinbe will show up. Again, this comforts him. Hes nervous cuz someone KOFF KOFF ACE broke that promise once. But jinbe is his crew mate so he trusts him, thank god.
"-But whoever did it, they must be opposed to freedom." The whole freedom thing? That runs through Luffy's blood and spirit. His brothers fought for it, his dad is the man who strives to give everyone freedom basically, and Luffy himself has seen enough of the OPPOSITE of freedom to be so, so much more than just against it. Hence why he of course was so eager to free the slaves in Sabaody, the kids in punk hazard, the toys in dressrosa, the country of Wano from Kaido's tyrany. The apple doesnt fall far from the tree huh.
I dont think Luffy would remember his promise with Shanks if it werent for his brothers putting feul to his dream. It was a stupid bet at first; he just wanted to beat Shanks, right then. But after meeting Sabo and Ace, he found the opposite of freedom and human rights. And then he wanted, REALLY wanted, to become the free-est man in the world; the pirate king.
Last one i promise ok? This one is less connected to whats going on in the episode at this point, but something I noticed (its so obvious everyone has seen this ok) was when luffy cries, his posture is always open. He doesn't curl in on himself like many people would do (I know I would, lol). He doesnt hug himself, protect himself. He's just, opened up to whoever is watching, literally. This has a little more to do with something I haven't talked about much in this post yet; his self-destruction issues. I said he tried to hurt himself when he felt mental pain, which is definitely similar. But he cries and doesnt try to protect or comfort himself, like he doesn't have that programmed into his mind. Reminder that he only wants to live because of his dream, and if he doesnt have his dream, he wants to die. (Whoa.). Ok, so no self preservation mechanism at all rlly. Hes basically ride or die. So, when things hurt so much that he cries, he has no hope left. He just kinda...dies inside. So this was mildly different after sabo died. Yes we saw him just standing there, sobbing. But the next day he's still crying, and instead he's laying on the ground. I saw that and the voice in the back of my head told me he wanted to be a part of that lifeless dirt beneath him. Then, Ace walked over. And his words made him feel the hope that I told you about earlier, and he sat up into a sitting position. And HUGGED HIS LEGS TO HIS CHEST. There's some self preservation! Some hope! Some will to exist, to live! Something we saw none of as he sat in front of his brothers corpse, shutting down. He sat there, open to his enemies, incapable of protecting himself. Practically anyone couldve killed him right then and there. I think he mightve liked that, at that moment. Like thank god he has that stupidly good luck cuz if he didn't I swear someone couldve thrown and axe or FUCKING ANYTHING AT THAT MOMENT and hed be dead becuase he never physically or mentally prepared himself. On purpose.
Our poor boy needs some fucking attention and therapists. (Insert my rant post about how jinbe is on the crew primarily for anger management and therapy, not just being a helmsman.) Ugh, smh ugly cries
Aaaaand thats about the end of the episode. Theres so many little tics and peesonality traits that you notive thru this episode, and I only noticed them cuz im rewatching this part of the show for like the third time. I don't react as much as the first time of course but some things are definitely sadder after knowing what's going on and what will happen later on.
Moral of the story (post)? I think luffy is almost equally as alike -if not, more similar to roger as ace is. Also, high key genuinely think Luffy met like NO ONE but Garp before he met Shanks and his crew. What the fuck was his first like 5 years of being alive like? (He wantd to be a pirate cuz Garp didnt want that. Rebellious baby asshole. And then shanks made things worse, in a good way for luffy. And then ace and sabo made that worse thing worse for a good reason. Luffy lives...for those influences. And that is fucking it. Why.
Tumblr media
Oh thanks tumblr for moving my picture to the bottom of the post u fucking idiot

Prompt: ASL give Dadan a father's day card. (She threatens to kill them but she keeps the card)
hehehehe this is late BUT HERE WE GOOOOOO
bear hag tiger bandit dad mom
read on ao3 here
“Hey guys.” Ace started out of nowhere, as he and his brothers laid down, staring at the sky from their usual cliffside spot. “What even… is Dadan.”
A beat of quiet.
“A hag!” Luffy said delightedly, giggling as he rolled over to stare at Ace. “An ugly one! Or even a bear! Oh she’s a bear-hag! A bear-hag-tiger-bandit!” He then gasped dramatically, stars in his eyes. “DO YOU THINK SHE CAN HAVE CLAWS! AND FANGS!”
“No! Idiot!” Sabo thumped Luffy on the head without even moving from his position on his back. “Dadan isn’t a bear. Or a tiger. She is a hag though.” He nodded, as if he had made an excellent, proper point.
Ace groaned at his brothers. “No! I mean what even is she to like… us. Not anybody else.”
“What do you mean?” Sabo rolled over as well to look at Ace, who was staunchly refusing to look at anyone else and whose face was turning a brilliant shade of red.
“I mean… like she kinda watches over us right? Does that make her kinda like a parent?”
Sabo cocked his head to the side, thinking. “I mean… maybe? She does give us food and medicine sometimes.”
“NO! THAT’S NOT DADAN! THAT’S –“ Luffy was quickly cut off by a hit to the head from Sabo.
“The Mystery Doctor isn’t real, Luffy, its just Dadan in a shitty mustache.”
Luffy looked to the side disgruntled. “Hmph.”
“GUYS! Focus!” Ace finally rolled over to face his brothers, so now they were finally all looking at each other. “What is Dadan? A Parent? A Mom?”
“I never had a mom before! Or a dad! Is Dadan a dad? Or a mom?” Luffy chattered, jumping on the possibility.
“Neither have I. That’s why I’m wondering.” Ace ignored the latter half of Luffy’s comment. Sometimes it was better to allow him to ramble than to try to make sense of it all. “Sabo you had parents right? What were they like?”
“Shitty.”
“Well, duh. No shit. What else?” Ace prompted, Luffy finally having quieted about Dadan being a tiger-bear-dad-mom beside him, and both staring attentively at Sabo.
(Because, well. They were children who never really had a home beside each other. Dadan was the closest thing Ace ever got, Luffy never had more than spare moments when the bar wasn’t busy, and both never knew anyone that could have been called dad, or mom, or anything of the sort – no one who stayed that is.
Ace hated his dad, and loved his mom (and hated himself, for all that he did,) and Luffy simply didn’t think he had any parents to feel anything about.
Still, Ace wondered, and things that his brothers wondered about, Luffy wondered about.)
Sabo placed his hand on his chin as if to think better. “Well. If we’re figuring out what Dadan was closest to, my mom was kind of like… Eh. She just cared about appearances and looking pretty and shit like that.”
Luffy and Ace nodded as one. “That’s not Dadan.” Dadan might wear make-up and beads, but she was a mountain bandit who was never really seen by people other than her clan or her victims. She didn’t really care about stuff like that. Even if she did get pissed when they stole the lipstick she kept hidden in her back closet for war paint.
“And she cared about other kids more than me, and didn’t really bother me until I did something she or someone else didn’t like.”
“Definitely not Dadan.” Luffy and Ace nodded again. Dadan didn’t have any other kids and yelled at them all the time. (Though, that may be because they never did anything they were supposed to do. What did she expect? Chores were boring! )
“What about your dad? What was he like?” Ace prompted, tossing out the idea of ‘mom.’
“Shitty. He always yelled at me and called me names. He was mean about it though. Dadan just looks like she’s about to cry.” Sabo finished, still thinking hard. “I mean… my parents aren’t what everyone else says parents are like though? At least for the kids in Edge Town.”
“Yeah… dads are supposed to protect you right? And be big and strong? And leaders?” Ace questioned, bitterness tracing into his voice.
“And moms are suppose to like take care of you and bring you stuff! Like the Mystery Doc-“
“THAT’S JUST DADAN!” Both Ace and Sabo this time hit Luffy’s head, cutting him off.
“She just comes to check on us, then trips up all our traps! It’s not a Mystery Doctor! Just! Dadan!” Ace spit out.
Luffy whined as the three of them quieted, thinking over everything that they had just said.
Then, Sabo spoke the words that would seal Dadan’s fate.
“If Dadan is kind of like a dad…” She protected them, or tried to in her own way, and was the leader of the Dadan bandits. “And kind of like a mom…” She was the Mystery Doctor, as Luffy called it, and checked up on them while cursing them out in all sorts of nasty ways. “Then… is she a mom and a dad? Is that how that works?”
“Well. We only have one of her. She can be both.” Ace decided. Jungle life left no room for society to state who could or could not be what and… well…
Besides. Maybe mom’s were the protectors sometimes and the leaders, and maybe dads were the caretakers. Ace was pretty sure that could happen. Did happen. Roles were stupid anyway. Just do whatever the fuck you wanted. That’s how Ace and his brothers lived, anyway, how everyone should live.
But…
“Why were you really asking Ace?”
Sabo knew him too well.
“Some of the kids in Edgetown were talking about how they were getting their dads’ shit for Father’s Day or something.”
And Ace wanted to know if he should be making something for anyone (or just wallow in the hatred he had for his dad.)
If he had anyone to make something for.
Luffy doesn’t even question why Ace was lurking around Edgetown kids without them, and sits up with stars in his eyes.
“WE NEED TO MAKE A CARD FOR –“
“SHUT UP!!”  Twin fist slammed into a rubber head as Ace and Sabo cut Luffy’s idea off.
“HEY!”
Or maybe…
“Maybe he has a point.” Sabo hummed, thoughtfully, as they had all settled into the ground.
“What?”
“Maybe we should make a card for Dadan.” Sabo rolled out of the way of Ace’s fist. “No! Think about it! We get to tell her thank you for all the shit she tries to do for us and maybe she’ll stop yelling at us so often!”
Luffy and Ace looked at him as if he were an idiot.
Sabo felt vaguely insulted.
“It’d be super funny to see her face when we give it to her too.”
Luffy and Ace looked at him as if he were a genius.
Now, there was only one question left.
“How the fuck do you make a card anyway?”
-
Dadan woke up peacefully that morning, which was an immediate cause for her to reach for her knife under the bed and spring into action.
She never woke up peacefully anymore. Not since those three brats had taken to crashing the hut in the morning. Either something was wrong, or those brats were playing with her.
She was going to get more gray hairs than Garp at this rate.
Fuck.
Quickly, she scanned her room for any oddities, any thing that would tip her off to whatever the fuck was going on this morning.
Dresser. Mirror. Weapons. Window. Card. Window. Wall. Wea- Wait.
Card?
Dadan stepped closer to the piece of folder thick paper, lying on her dresser, and peered at it closely.
Hapy Father’s Day! It read, in the misspelt handwriting of a child who had previously learned to write well then gave up. It was in black ink, fancy looking, with a smear along the exclamation point and drifting off into the side.
Around it was jungle trees in crayon and something that might have passed as Dadan, if not for the lack of face, and the only visual characteristics being orange curls and red beads and sharp teeth and a angry look.
Curious.
Wait.
SHE WAS A WOMAN!
Damn BRATS!
She ignored the tears at the edge of her eyes and opened the card, knife set to the side.
Dear Dadan, the same handwriting as the front said, this time in dark blue, thickly pressed crayon. Hapy Father’s day. Thank you for taking care of us. Beside the note was a scribbled jolly roger, an S surrounded by crossbones as its signature. Besides that was another scribbly orange blob, this time marginally closer to looking like a person.
Beneath that, on the same page, was careful red print, again in crayon. The words were spaced out, as were the letters, as if the writer didn’t particularly know how many letters were in the word and was waiting for someone to tell them. It read Shitty Old Hag. Thank you for taking care of me. You are stupid but you are strong sometimes. Happy Fathers Day. – Ace
Besides that was some suspicious wet spots, hastily wiped away.  Dadan dabbed her own eyes as to not add to them.
Ace’s artistry skills were slightly better than Sabo’s at least. His version of her was most definitely a person, apparently sitting atop of a bear. She laughed at that, a little.
Her eyes skimmed to the next page, where a monstrosity of black and orange was red was scribbled out. She was vaguely sure it was human. Vaguely. It might have been a bear.
The yellow crayon writing had been outlined in careful strokes by someone clearly not the original writer. DADAN, it seemed to screech, YOU ARE THE BEST BEAR HAG TIGER BANDIT MOM DAD. MOUNTAIN BANDITS SUCK BUT YOUR COOL. – FUTUR KING OF THE PIRATES
Then, on the opposite side of the drawing, in bright orange, LUFFY.
These stupid, stupid kids.
Dadan wasn’t crying. She wasn’t.
Oh how she loved these kids.
She turned the card around one last time, to the message on the back.
This handwriting, graceful and in black ink, was one she recognized. Makino.
Dear Dadan,
I hope this gift doesn’t insult you too bad, the boys were so excited to do it that I just had to help them with supplies! They really do love you, even if they don’t quite grasp the difference between mom and dad. They told me they just decided you could be both. Isn’t that great?
Thank you for being there for our boys Dadan! Happy Father’s Day.
-Makino
Okay. Maybe Dadan was crying right now.
Oh, she hated the fact that she loved these boys.
“Shishishi!”
“Luffy! Shut up!”
THUNK!
Oh, she was going to kill them.
Dadan turned to the window where a top hat, a straw hat, and a quite obvious head of black hair was peeking out over the window sill.
“BOYS!” She raged, setting the card down with care before running to the window.
“RUN!” Came the terrified call, followed by laughter and joy as three boys sprinted away into the woods.
Dadan debated following them, before deciding she would rather they not see her teary-eyed face.
Ah.
She might not be the best parent, but she did alright at least. Enough to get a card on a holiday.
Dadan loved her boys.
She really did.

Misfit of Demon King Academy 1 | Healin’ Good PreCure 13 - 14 | Lapis Re:Lights 1 | God of High School 1 | Muhyo and Roji’s BSI s2 1
Misfit of Demon King Academy 1
This originally had the ecchi tag on its anime entry on AniList…or, at least, that’s how it was in my memory…but now that I see it doesn’t have that, it’s just another reincarnation isekai-type series. Let’s dig into it!
I…think this guy is meant to be portrayed as “hot” because he has the piercing eyes and he’s tall (against the girls in what will presumedly be his harem), but he kind of looks like your standard Potato-kun in a white outfit…so, uh…*shrugs*
Uh…is that guy meant to be Indian? You can’t get more obvious than the “Indu” family. Update: You see his brother later and Leorg has fairer skin, so maybe not.
LOL, “Flame of Darkness” makes someone nothing but a chuunibyou.
Uh…this is called The Misfit of Demon King Academy, y’know? Anos (Anoth?) is gonna get in, you bet your butts.
The owl is cute.
…guy, that 3 second rule thing was actually funny, but the more you think about the joke, the less funny it gets. Show: 1. Me: Infinity -1
Just from appearances, I wanna guess Misha is an ice or light magic user, or whatever equivalent the show has.
Is this what Assassin’s Pride could have been…?
How did the mother (Anoth’s) think her kid maturing that fast wasn’t weird?
Mushroom gratin? Is that an actual dish?...Yep, seems so. Sounds nice. I like mushrooms.
What’s up with young mothers in anime these days? Then again, the only other point of reference I have is Masamune-kun’s Revenge…
I thought it was the other Indu guy we saw earlier. This guy’s…not that bad-looking, though (LOL, my preferences ring out loud and clear…)…welp, spoke too soon. There he is. Update: Leorg kinda looks like Hakuto Kunai from Demon Lord, Retry!, come to think of it.
If Zepes died several times over the course of this episode…would one more death actually matter? (Not really, to be honest. Zepes is a scumbag.)
Come to think of it, this anime got postponed due to COVID, yeah? Was that why there was a sakuga spot earlier…?
Was that Sasha (Misha’s sister)? I found her name while checking if the anime was postponed.
I like the colour choices in this show, at least.
I don’t think this show has the best sense of comedic timing. Let your jokes breathe, dammit! That’s what comedic beats are for!
In a season with more offerings, I might get rid of this or pause it, but the season’s fairly sparse as it stands (darn virus!) so it stays.
Update: I didn’t notice, but an Anime News Network staff member wrote that Anoth’s surname is familiar…if you read Harry Potter.
Healin’ Good PreCure 13
Gotta start in the middle for this and work our way back. Note I did watch the 1st 2 eps without subs earlier this year when they were on the official PreCure YouTube, so I’m ahead of most people.
(From wandering the wiki and the news) I’ve seen nothing but pink/blue/yellow Cures these days, so I kind miss the more adventurous colours like green and orange…but then again, I never really liked green. It’s the colour of envy and…as petty as it sounds, I think I developed that bias because green is stereotypically the colour of rot, vomit (aside from anime’s rainbow vomit) and stinky things.
I didn’t notice this, but there’s a faint highlight on the Cures’ eyes (red for Grace, purple for Fontaine and blue for Sparkle).
It’s a drone! In PreCure! Yay! (It finally hit me exactly how much of a distant dream it’s been – from watching Suite and episodes of most of the other PreCure ‘til now – watching PreCure legally as a simulcast is! It’s crazy and it only took, what…5 years between Suite and this? 16 if you count from Futari wa to Healin’ Good.)
Is it that drone?
Hah? This is almost like the electricity-themed PreCure I came up with on the fan wiki. It’s not like I could sue Toei for it, though…they own that stuff, I only own what came out of my own imagination.
The subs say “Rate”, but “rate” has a meaning in English. No wonder the initial wiki translations say “Latte”, especially because the queen is “Teatine” to match.
Okay, so Mei is the sis and Yota is the brother. Got it.
Hey! What if there was a PreCure where the villains had devastated another world before? That would really raise the stakes.
“[T]hunders” (sic)? Thunder is the sound, lightning is the flash. Which one is it?
I see. As soon as they identified it as the Element of Lightning, I sort of guessed they could add it to their repertoire later, and I was right.
Its’s nice to see they put a woman in the moving company as well. Proves that girls can do anything they set their minds to, even what are supposedly “men’s jobs”.
I guess from the face I should’ve expected the element to talk, like the Fairy Tones from Suite, but I didn’t really figure that out until I saw it talk,
I feel like Hinata should’ve gone to see how Mei made her juice. That way, the two might be able to make similar-tasting juice…but that’s just an idea.
Healin’ Good PreCure 14
I feel like Byogens were responsible for Nodoka’s sickness, much like they are for Latte.
“Energy Source” seems to refer to a place where energy appears…I know that sounds a bit dumb if you don’t realise genki hakken means something like “appearance of energy (for a person)”, but…yeah, the PreCure series is like this. Unfortunately, that’s what you have to deal with.
I feel like this “teamwork overcomes all hardships” message is important in this time of COVID-19.
Guaiwaru = “condition is bad”, or ill health (guai ga warui).
Is that the element of air? I thought the PreCure would’ve used their element of lightning to fix the steamer, but hey, teamwork works too.
I’m a weeny bit peevy they translate minna to “girls”. It’s correct in context when it’s been translated that way, but minna means “everybody”.
I imagined Hinata saying “Watashi no smartphone ga!” instead of “Atarashii sumaho ga hoshii!”
Lapis Re:Lights 1
Eh…COVID-19 means I gotta sample things I’m not so crazy about.
Why is one of the first lines in this show “My behind hurts!”?
Bristol? Is this England?...Nope, it’s a place called “Mamkestell”.
I was thinking this girl…I think the reviews said her name was Tiara…was going to sing to the flower to make it perk up again, but nup, she whistled to it. That seems a bit irrelevant, to be honest. (I would prefer an all or nothing approach to a wish-washy approach like this…as in, if this is an idol show, then either go all in with the singing and dancing, or do something else that’ll catch my attention.)
Tiara’s face looks hella generic.
For some reason, I get this ominous feeling when the word “witch” is mentioned…must be the instinct from Madoka popping up again.
Lemme guess. Lynette is the bookworm?...*sigh* Just another method of showing a character is a bookworm without actually showing their reading a book, which I think is counterintuitive.
Get some protective gear, girls!
Rosetta keeps saying “Yes” (in English).
Lemme guess…people ship the dumb one and the smart one? They’re like a gender-flipped Dice and Gentaro, only the smart one is more uppity and the stupid one is more sporty.
The word appears to be noumei, but that exact word doesn’t seem to exist. Lavie seems to say the word is the opposite to something else, but I can’t tell what that is either…
Albino rabbit, eh?
…people probably ship Rosetta and Tiara too, right? *sigh*
So there’s…no singing in this fantasy/idol show. Whistling is how you invoke magic…so how is someone who can’t whistle supposed to invoke magic?!
Whose idea was it to put the OP in the middle of the episode?
It was “Neechan, daikirai!” “Forget you” is a fairly loose translation…
Little Miss Rosetta = Rosetta-chan.
I think Tiara called Rosetta “sensei” when the former wanted the latter to take care of her (i.e. take her to their dorm).
Titi = Tiara. I didn’t actually figure that out because I thought it referred to the rabbits.
Gah! These almost-real-world names (or real world names, in regards to “Bristol”) are gonna drive me NUTS!
*sigh* Boob jiggle.
*sighhhhhhhhh…* Lemme guess, there’s a potential expulsion on the horizon? Update: Yep. Dropped.
God of High School 1
First Webtoon series I’m covering here.
Oh, I checked out the first chapter of the webtoon because CR linked it to their anime page. The only difference I’ve seen from that, aside from fleshing out the backgrounds, is…that creepy skull (?) on the wall.
You can tell it’s Korean when I don’t understand what the text says. (I don’t know Korean, but I do know some Chinese and Japanese.) Update: This is Japanese-dubbed, but they left the Korean text in.
That intro is much more powerful now that the backgrounds are fleshed out.
Ooh, the colours in the OP are very nice!
Hmm? They’re starting with the grandpa, rather than starting with “I’m Mori Jin, 17 years old”? Good choice.
The expressions in this show are funny. I like them already.
Waittttttttt…I dunno how Korean names work. Is Mori Jin’s first name “Mori” or “Jin”? Update: I checked it up, and I got even more confused!
KORG Arena seems to be…from Marvel? Like BnHA references Star Wars???
*sigh* Moonbucks? Again?...and of course the girls only talk about “hotties”. We need a Bechdel test in this thing.
The comments on ch. 1 said “A new Luffy is born”, so now I agree with it…but they’re not going to show how Mori Jin was enlisted for GOH (as they seem to abbreviate it)?
There’s Japanese, English and Korean in the afro dude’s comments.
I’m amazed that tall dude with the spiky hair wasn’t more surprised about Mori Jin and the girl passing by…
Would those glasses on Mori Jin’s head be any help? Update: Turns out those aren’t “glasses”…they’re a sleeping mask.
Kamina glasses!
They put CR and Webtoon advertising over everything in this anime…geesh.
These red parts of people’s noses are gonna bug me, aren’t they…?
It should be battle royale, right? Update: Okay, so I checked and both are correct spellings.
This seems like the sort of thing that would never get funded because you need to pull off every battle scene right.
They cut the initial fight with “Blondie” out, but that actually makes things more interesting! Good choice.
Lemme guess – Mori Jin is going to have to fight this Kang Manseouk guy at full power one day? *shrugs* (Can I stop referring to people by their full names already??? I can’t stop until I know which is the first name and which is the last.) Update: So the wiki finally helped me out and Mori is the first name and Jin the last, meaning I can call him “Mori”. Got it.
*Mori suddenly pulls the prisoner’s pants down* - That was…random.
I liked it more than I thought I would! (Just for reference, the other protag dude is called Han Dae-wi and the girl is Yoo Mira.)
Muhyo and Roji’s BSI s2 1
(Update for the Tumblr fans: I finished s1 outside the seasonal format.)
Kokkuri-san never goes well in anime…
Where does Nana work again…?
I don’t think Muhyo and Roji are legally (magically legally?) obligated to tell Nana anything about what they do.
Yay! Goryo is animted for the first time! He has such a beautiful voice~!
Notably, Roji wouldn’t have had a smartphone in 2004 (or whatever year close to that when the manga put this bit out).
Goryo (5) vs Muhyo (6). Didn’t figure this out at the time I read the manga.
I think the subbers misgendered Goryo. Goryo is a dude, as can be gathered from the name “Daranimaru”.
“Waka”? Does that stand for “young head [of the office]” or something?
Okay, whose bright idea was it to pair Now on Air (female vocalists) with Muhyo and Roji’s (a series dominated with dudes)…?
Ah, Funimation is on the production team of this anime. That would explain the dub rights.
