Here is my contribution to Our Favorite Scene Zine latest edition, which compiled over 20 artists’ interpretations of the reunion scene from THE HOUSE IN THE CERULEAN SEA. This book was my first inroad to TJ’s staggering body of work, and remains one of my comfort books at times when my faith in humanity is challenged, or when parenting two smarty-pants gets particularly hard. 😅 From the outset, I wanted to focus on the kids’ reactions to Arthur and Linus’s reunion, because love is something that children inherit from their grownups, and that joy multiplies as they grow up in safe and accepting spaces. I hope you like how it came out. 💕

he's a 7 year old boy who would do anything for his brothers and sisters

he has untold power and could bend the world to his whims

he likes to collect records and listens to what he calls "dead people music" and he got a portable record player as a gift for one of his dads

He has spiders in his brain and has nightmares that cause him to lose control of his magic and wake up screaming

He likes to wear footie pajamas because they have a little flap for his butt

He threatens to kill people when they piss him off

He wanted to call his dad "pappy" but he was outvoted by his siblings

His birth name is Lucifer

He goes by Lucy

idk what it is about TJ Klune books being so inspiring. the only time i seem to ever make fanart is when it’s of one of his characters. i am so normal about House in the Cerulean Sea

Recently I’ve read the house in the cerulean sea and I loved it SO much!!! I couldn't stop thinking about them so I HAD to make a least a sketch of these lovely characters who have my entire heart

Linus's first Yule!

Zoe, Sal, Arthur, and Linus stand in the back. Zoe wears bright patterned dress and a white turtleneck. Her white afro is pulled back behind a bandana and wreathed in flora. Arthur's grey-blonde hair is windswept and chaotic. He wears a striped polo shirt and smiles lovingly and tiredly at the viewer. Linus is next to him in a thick knit sweater, doing the same. His hair is polished, dark, and receding.

In the front stand Chauncey, Talia, Lucy, and Phee. Chauncey wears a holly wreath as a hat and his tentacle is holding Talia's hand. Talia wears a cuordoroy overall dress and smiles nervously at the viewer. Her white beard and hair are down and flowing. Lucy is wearing a shirt with a blushing skull that says "Live your best life" and he makes an incredibly innocent expression at the viewer. His black hair it's choppy and unkempt. Next to him is Phee in a floral shirt and plaid skirt with leggings. Her red hair is full of flora. Phee stands with her arms crossed and smirks knowingly at the viewer. End ID]

Chauncey: Oh, no, we’re going to jail!

Phee: Luci’s going to jail. I’m saying I was kidnapped.

Chauncey: Hey, that’s a good plan. You and I were kidnapped.

Luci: If I’m goin’ to jail we’re all goin’ to jail!

Lucy from The House in the Cerulean Sea because I loved the book and him so much

thinking about lucy yelling "you're not my real dad!" at linus one day because he's upset at him

and that night linus decides to sleep in the guest house because he thinks lucy is still upset and he wants to give lucy some space

But actually after he brushes his teeth, lucy sits on arthur and linus's bed, waiting for linus so that he can apologize to him

But then arthur starts turning off the lights and ushers lucy off to bed but lucy says "i'm waiting for linus to come back"

And arthur perhaps could have worded it better, but he says "linus isn't coming back" and of course he means he's not coming back tonight

But lucy bursts into big, wailing sobs because he thinks linus left for good, and he's about to dash out after him in a panic because he has to stop his dad from leaving

And arthur is bewildered at the big reaction, but he assures lucy that no, linus is just sleeping in the guest house tonight

Lucy calms down immediately, but still insists on going to apologize to linus right that moment because he just can't wait until morning
