I hate the whole concept of jeankasa solely because it's humiliating to jean. he will spend the rest of his life knowing mikasa not only does not chose him but will never love him fully. he spent five years of his life fighting by her side, saved her life twice and she never gave him the time of the day (she didn't had to. that's not what I'm saying at all). it's so infuriating, I felt genuine rage thinking about it lmao
imagine you're Connie or Reiner and seeing they both getting married, how ridiculous would sound. imagine your wife taking your child to the grave of her first love, buried in the scarf he gave her, years and years of her openly yearning for a man who died. imagine how much of an object of mockery he would be socially.
i adore mikasa and she was only 19, she totally deserved a life of bliss and find love again. I just could never believe that she would love jean this way. aaand the anime credits leave absolutely no room for doubt, that man is a 100% jean. I fucking hate it.
#lua rants about stuff#not tagging characters#don't want to polute anybodies tags#there's people who genuinely love them as a couple and I would totally have too#but not like this#never like this#jean has been portrait as a character who doubts of himself too much to be so openly treated as the consolation prize#to a woman who refused to move on

Today's hot take (and rant) brought to you by your favorite terminal girl:
Web dev* should never have been a job in the first place. The web was supposed to be simple, accessible and free (as in libre). Not only is javascript a mistake, but it's whole ecosystem (libraries and community) is a mistake. Yes, im even arguing against the very website im on in a way. A bunch of simple forums managed by a few devs (and moderators), should be enough to fit all of what we use the web for.
"What about buying stuff on the internet", idealy fuck you, go to your local store (if you can), but in practice, no need for amazon and other gazillion dollar companies, just plain old simple custom stores with simple css and less ads (fuck ads).
"What about interactivity and buttons and all of the stuff that uses Javascript ?", use something else bitch. 2 years before javascript there was fuckin Lua and you didn't need more than that. Sure, use similar stuff, but why javascript ? i know they had their reasons, but there was alternatives and seemingly for no reason js stuck. (enlighten me on this if you want)
"What about electron !!! it's so nice for the programmers !" NO ! If you don't care at all about the power usage/performances of your program you shouldn't touch shit that will go into production. Yeah sure it's easy to spread your 'app' everywhere like a fucking disease.
It's not necessary to tell me how much im wrong, don't trust and care about what people say on the internet, don't trust me, don't even bother yourself with this. It's not necessary.
*some backend people do deserve some respect, front end people, huh... you're doing a shit job and idk how to tell you. But all devs ofc, noob or good, deserve respect. It's just that sometimes we make mistakes. And that im really angy ! >:3

It’s an awful disaster really but it’s still so interesting. They didn’t even evacuate the passengers right away, but at least there weren’t more casualties! When I get home I can add more pictures but yeah ough.
THE COSTA CONCORDIA WAS A CRUISE SHIP THAT "SUNK" IN 2012
It was sailing around Giglio island near Italy and I think when it was docking, the captain got too close to the edge of the area (as what I've heard its bc he was being cocky and showing off to some women on the island because he was showing off how good of a captain he was to be able to maneuver his ship in such a tight spot). But anyway yeah, the ship ran ground bc he got too close to the side where it was shallow. The ship listed to the side and took on a lot of water, it didn't completely sink but remained halfway in the water while they tried to get people off the ship. According to the wikipedia, it took six hours to get everyone off the ship and 32 people ended up dying from it. The captain actually LEFT THE SHIP during the sinking which is a big no no bc the captain has to wait until everyone is off the ship or go down with it iirc (I dont know how all that stuff works I don't know a lot about maritime law. But the most interesting part of it to me is that they had to leave the ship in the water for SEVERAL YEARS before they were eventually able to dismantle it and get it out of the water. So the ship was just there rusting and deteriorating off the coast of the island for a really long time, there are so many cool pictures of the costa concordia and I was even able to find a video at one point of a family like documenting the cruise (I dont remember how many days into the journey it sunk) so there is like a home video of it somewhere that I was able to find. It's such a pretty ship too, one of the like key features of it was the emerald green color that is really cool but yeah stupid captain makes stupid mistakes and gets a lot of backlash, I don't remember what the charges were or if he was charged but people were VERY angry that he abandoned ship while people were still being evacuated
i looked up pictures before reading what you wrote and the very first thought i had was 'why tf were they so close to land where the water is clearly shallower ???
as awful as it is, wont lie that looking up pictures and details is very interesting since its a more recent event and since the ship didnt fully sink, so theres a lot of pics of its inside. i also found some wild pictures of people chilling at the beach with fucking ship wreck in the background like its nothing ajsashgsh what a time to be alive
#I love telling you stuff#thank you for listening to me ramble all the time about my interests#next time I gotta give you the Pompeii rant#but I gotta actually rewatch some of those documentaries bc I don’t remember much#lua tag

BEST YGO GIRL: ROUND 4, GROUP C
Match 1
please use this as an opportunity to say why you like a character, not why you don't.
Propaganda under the cut!
Ruka
She’s a sweet little gal who can see duel spirits!!
luna/luka/ruka can see duel monsters spirits. she had a heavy burden placed on her when she was THREE YEARS OLD to protect the world of duel monsters spirits. as if that is enough to put on her shoulders, she's also sickly and oh yeah, they decided to also give a signer mark. she's three. she's on her death bed. she's expected to save two worlds. like this kid literally cannot catch a break. oh yeah, also her parents? they're never around. only person in her life is her twin brother, who is loud and that rubs against her autism in the wrong way. yes, she's autistic. do not argue with me. no i'm serious don't argue with me. lil miss luka has the failure to be diagnosed all weird little autistic girls are subjected. if she was a boy, y'all would see her autism for what it is but that's not the point of this rant. anyway her first time meeting yusei, she didn't care about his criminal mark because his duel monster friends said he's okay and that's good enough for her: the duel monsters said this criminal on her couch is a good guy! therefore acab. this is also the first time an adult has ever treated her like her thoughts and opinions matter, mostly because there was never an adult in her goddamn life in the first place (shout out to her parents for ABANDONING TWO TWELVE YEAR OLDS to their own fuckin devices). can't forget the fortune cup, where lua takes her place at first and LOSES IN THE FIRST ROUND, damaging her professional duel record (not like it matters because the writers decided it didn't matter what luka does after the series ANYWAY so who cares if her record is damaged :) ). she gets dragged in anyway and tortured by a child psychologist - classic weird autistic girl moment. during this she has a vision of the duel monster world and realizes oh yeah this is real, i'm supposed to protect this, and like. CANNOT. CATCH. A SINGLE. BREAK. aki takes an interest in luka because of her powers too! all while divine is a tool to her brother and she's forced to watch divine torture her brother :) awesome stuff. literally. cannot catch a fuckin break. next season her first duel is a loss against some weird kid from the future, and her second duel is against aporia where she literally dies (her brother brings her back to life). she is a character of untapped potential and deserves the world. vote for luka.
Anzu Mazaki
the original It Girl, very underrated anzu masaki is stubborn. she’s all about friendship and she believes in you soooo much. she’s the type to give you a lecture while picking you up because she’ll never leave you stranded but you should take better care of yourself. she has dreams of being a dancer and takes that risk in moving to whole different COUNTRY to follow her dreams. vote for anzu!!!

TIME TO BE AN OLD MAN AND RANT ABOUT ASSEMBLERS AND DATES.
So I'm working on an April 1st Project as y'all may expect me to and as per usual, I grab the Sonic 1 disassembly off of the Retro Github (labels are up to date, stuff is tidy) and find that the build file now has a lua file next to it and I'm like "huh, that's weird, but alright"
But the more I dig in, I realise they've changed the assembler from ASM68K to AS
Now, this is normally not a big deal, outside of the assembler being ASs slow, it has most if not all instructions for 68K assembly and supports other chips (including the Z80 which is likely why it was swapped for it) and is supported by more systems than just windows.
The problem, outside of the aforementioned slowness every time you build, is the difference in fetching the current system date (I like to have the build date on the header itself nowadays instead of an arbitrary version number)
This is my usual Date function in ASM68K (top/left), it's a big mess because admitedly, I'm not a good coder (literally been proven this can be done more efficiently (bottom/right))
AS doesn't have these constants and only has DATE for fetching the date... which is... Month/Day/Year.... I don't like that at all
Furthermore it doesn't add a 0 for single digit days / months, which makes it a bigger burden to work with.
FETCH STRINGS, CUT STUFF, ADD ZERO, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
At least time is straightforward (though for some reason it includes the miliseconds)
Oh god I hope it accounts for the hours properly, it's way past 10 AM so I can't tell yet.
On the bright side, I can now use this for Sonic 2 and 3 (they've always been AS) but now I have to slow the fuck down when building and make sure shit is tidy or I'll have to wait another eternity.
I made this gif back in 2021 and it's more relevant now than ever.

ok, so.
i made a whole set up on my phone to be able to take notes while reading, and my plan was to send an ask with them before gathering my thoughts for a full organized review. but less than halfway through the chapter and i simply wasn't able to write a single thing anymore. i had planned on saying a lot, and as i went through the chapter my mind was spiraling, but by the end i was rendered speechless.
like. really.
everything was so intense, it took me three hours to read the chapter and i went to sleep by 4AM, cus i was like 🧍🏽♀️😶 in bed. the kitchen scene? i was so so tense, i had to stop reading several times to collect myself before continuing.
god, and the brother reveal? i loved it.
😮💨 i don't know, ryen, i really wanted to say a bunch of stuff because you're writing is ridiculously good. im currently majoring in languages and literature, which means that whenever im reading something i cant help but look for and analyze formal aspects and consciously or not you have an amazing control of discourse. your writing reflects the emotions you're describing in such delicate and sensitive ways, it's absurdly immersive and oh god. im rambling here but yeah.
i talk so much omg, i said i was speechless and this ask is enormous already.
anyway, my point: you're amazing. really one of my favorite authors. ever.
i wanna be your friend 😭
i loved forfeit and i was so so so touched by it. it was nerve-wracking in a delicous way, i cried, i laughed and, although i started trembling, i ended it with a ridiculous smile on my face.
im looking forward to your next ideas and i hope you look forward to my reblog with a decent review, cause it's definitely coming.
also, if you wanna, i can send the few notes i took about the beginning of the chapter, cus i think its funny?? anyway, its just rantings and quoting stuff while sobbing.
LUA BABYYY oh gosh, I should’ve clarified that you don’t have to take notes on first reread and just enjoy it if you wanted😭 looking back, I threw so so much at y’all🥲 that’s my bad.
Damn! 3 hours that really is a long time but you savored the hell out of this🥺 and taking breaks to just stare into the distance?? You literally mirrored my writing process huhuhu like I had to take multiple breaks, sometimes ones that would last a day or two. Because the nitty gritty took all of my brainpower to piece together and navigate.. imagining having all of those thoughts but in the same mind, while keeping in mind what they don’t know about each other.
Like. Be reader and go from Sundress Season straight into seeing Yoongi. There’s no context of Dal Segno so it’s jarring as fck😭 But we have all the Yoongi context too so it was definitely a balance. Hopefully i achieved what I wanted. Super happy about the writing feedback🤕 I was damn nervous about this chapter but this lifted my spirits so damn high. Those are wonderful thoughts and I dread how I’m gonna react seeing your review because I feel like I’m gonna end up a puddle of snot and tears😂🍊 Take your time but I know I’m already gonna read it over and over.
Of course you can send some notes now!! I’d love that actually🥳 Lastly, I’m glad you laughed. There’s angst yes but this is supposed to be a comfort chapter after everything🫂 Talk to me whenever I love making friends here oh gosh.. No need to be shy here at all :D

hey, i started following you recently and ur bio says ur a hacker? any tips on where to start? hacking seems like a v cool/fun way to learn more abt coding and cybersecurity/infrastructure and i'd like to explore it but there's so much on the internet and like, i'm not trying to get into anything illegal. thanks!
huh, an interesting question, ty!
i can give more tailored advice if you hit me up on chat with more specifics on your background/interests.
given what you've written here, though, i'll just assume you don't have any immediate professional aspirations (e.g. you just want to learn some things, and you aren't necessarily trying to get A Cyber Security Job TM within the next three months or w/e), and that you don't know much about any specific programming/computering domain yet.
(stuff under cut because long)
first i'd probably just try to pick some interesting problem that you think you can solve with tech. this doesn't need to be a "hacking" project at first; i was just messing around with computers for ages before i did anything involving security/exploitation.
if you don't already know how to program, you should ideally pick a problem you can solve via programming. for instance: i learned a lot back in the 2000s, when play-by-post forum RPGs were in vogue. see, i'd already been messing around, building my own personal sites, first just with HTML & CSS, and later on with Javascript and PHP. and i knew the forum software everyone used (InvisionPowerBoard) was written in PHP. so when one of the admins at my RPG complained that they'd like the ability to set multiple profile pictures, i was like, "hey i'm good at programming, want me to create a mod to do that," and then i just... did. so then they asked me to program more features, and i got all the sexy nerd cred for being Forum Mod Queen, and it was a good time, i learned a lot.
(i also got to be the person who was frantically IMed at 2am because wtf the forum is down and there's an inscrutable error, what do??? basically sysadmining! also, much less sexy! still, i learned a lot!)
the key thing is that it's gotta be a problem that's interesting to you: as much as i love making dorky sites in PHP, half the fun was seeing other people using my stuff, and i think the era of forum-based RPGs has passed. but maybe you can apply some programming talents to something that you are interested in—maybe you want to make a silly Chrome extension to make people laugh, a la Cloud to Butt, or maybe you'd like to make a program that converts pixel art into cross-stitching patterns, maybe you want to just make a cool adventure game on those annoying graphing calculators they make you use in class, or make a script for some online game you play, or make something silly with Arduino (i once made a trash can that rolled toward me when i clapped my hands; it was fun, and way easier than you'd think!), whatever.
i know a lot of hacker-types who got their start doing ROM hacking for video games—replacing the character art or animations or whatever in old NES games. that's probably more relevant than the PHP websites, at least, and is probably a solid place to get started; in my experience those communities tend to be reasonably friendly to questions. pick a small thing you want to do & ask how to do it.
also, a somewhat unconventional path, but—once i knew how to program a bit of Python, i started doing goofy junk, like, "hey can i implemented NamedTuple from scratch,” which tends to lead to Python metaprogramming, which leads to surprising shit like "oh, stack frames are literally just Python objects and you can manually edit them in the interpreter to do deliberately horrendous/silly things, my god this language allows too much reflection and i'm having too much fun"... since Python is a lot of folks' first language these days, i thought i'd point that out, since i think this is a pretty accessible start to thinking about How Programs Actually Work under the hood. allison kaptur has some specific recommendations on how to poke around, if you wanna go that route.
it's reasonably likely you'll end up doing something "hackery" in the natural course of just working on stuff. for instance, while i was working on the IPB forum software mods, i became distressed to learn that everyone was using an INSECURE version of the software! no one was patching their shit!! i yelled at the admins about it, and they were like "well we haven't been hacked yet so it's not a problem," so i uh, decided to demonstrate a proof of concept? i downloaded some sketchy perl script, kicked it until it worked, logged in as the admins, and shitposted a bit before i logged out, y'know, to prove my point.
(they responded by banning me for two weeks, and did not patch their software. which, y'know, rip to them; they got hacked by an unrelated Turkish group two months later, and those dudes just straight-up deleted the whole website. i was a merciful god by comparison!)
anyway, even though downloading a perl script and just pointing it at a website isn't really "hacking" (it's the literal definition of script kiddie, heh)—the point is i was just experimenting a lot and trying a lot of stuff, which meant i was getting comfortable with thinking of software as not just some immutable relic, but something you can touch and prod in unexpected ways.
this dovetails into the next thing, which is like, just learn a lot of stuff. a boring conventional computer science degree will teach you a lot (provided you take it seriously and actually try to learn shit); alternatively, just taking the same classes as a boring conventional computer science degree, via edX or whatever free online thingy, will also teach you a lot. ("contributing to open source" also teaches you a lot but... hngh... is a whole can of worms; send a follow-up ask if you want that rant.)
here's where i should note that "hacking" is an impossibly broad category: the kind of person who knows how to fuck with website authentication tokens is very different than someone who writes a fuzzer, who is often quite different than someone who looks at the bug a fuzzer produces and actually writes a program that can exploit that bug... so what you focus on depends on what you're interested in. i imagine classes with names like "compilers," "operating systems," and "networking" will teach you a lot. but, like, idk, all knowledge is god-breathed and good for teaching. hell, i hear some universities these days have actual computer security classes? that's probably a good thing to look at, just to get a sense of what's out there, if you already know how to program.
also be comfortable with not knowing everything, but also, learn as you go. the bulk of my security knowledge came when i got kinda airdropped into a work team that basically hired me entirely on "potential" (lmao), and uh, prior to joining i only had the faintest idea what a hypervisor was? or the whole protection ring concept? or ioctls or sandboxing or threat models or, fuck, anything? i mostly just pestered people with like 800 questions and slowly built up a knowledge base, and remember being surprised & delighted when i went to a security conference a year later and could follow most of the talks, and when i wound up at a bar with a guy on the xbox security team and we compared our security models a bunch, and so on. there wasn't a magic moment when i "got it", i was just like, "okay huh this dude says he found a ring-0 exploit... what does that mean... okay i think i got that... why is that a big deal though... better ask somebody.." (also: reading an occasional dead tree book is a good idea. i owe my firstborn to Robert Love's Linux Kernel Development, as outdated as it is, and also O'Reilly's kookaburra book gave me a great overview of web programming back in the day, etc. you can learn a lot by just clicking around random blogs, but you’ll often end up with a lot of random little facts and no good mental scaffolding for holding it together; often, a decent book will give you that scaffolding.)
(also, it's pretty useful if you can find a knowledgable someone to pepper with random questions as you go. finding someone who will actively mentor you is tricky, but most working computery folks are happy to tell you things like "what you're doing is actually impossible, here's why," or "here's a tutorial someone told me was good for learning how to write a linux kernel module," or "here's my vague understanding of this concept you know nothing about," or "here's how you automate something to click on a link on a webpage," which tends to be handier than just google on its own.)
if you're reading this and you're like "ok cool but where's the part where i'm handed a computer and i gotta break in while going all hacker typer”—that's not the bulk of the work, alas! like, for sure, we do have fun pranking each other by trying dumb ways of stealing each other's passwords or whatever (once i stuck a keylogger in a dude's keyboard, fun times). but a lot of my security jobs have involved stuff like, "stare at this disassembly a long fuckin' time to figure out how the program pointer got all fucked up," or, "write a fuzzer that feeds a lot of randomized input to some C++ program, watch the program crash because C++ is a horrible language for writing software, go fix all the bugs," or "think Really Hard TM about all the settings and doohickeys this OS/GPU/whatever has, think about all the awful things someone could do with it, threat model and sandbox accordingly." occasionally i have done cool proof-of-concept hacks but honestly writing exploits can kinda be tedious, lol, so like, i'm only doing that if it's the only way i can get people to believe that Yes This Is Actually A Problem, Fix Your Code
"lua that's cool and all but i wanted, like, actual links and recommendations and stuff" okay, fair. here's some ideas:
microcorruption: very fun embedded security CTF; teaches you everything you need to know as you're doing it.
cryptopals crypto challenges: very fun little programming exercises that teach you a lot of fundamental cryptography concepts as you're going along! you can do these even as a bit of a n00b; i did them in Python for the lulz
the binary bomb lab is hilariously copied by, like, so many CS programs, lol, but for good reason. it's accessible and fun and is the first time most people get to feel like a real hacker! (requires you know a bit of C beforehand)
ctftime is a good way to see when new CTFs ("capture the flag"s; security-focused competitions) are coming up. or, sometimes CTFs post their source code, so you can continue trying them after the CTF is over. i liked Stripe's CTFs when they were going, because they focused on "web stuff", and "web stuff" was all i really knew at the time. if you're more interested in staring at disassembly, there's CTFs focused on that sort of thing too.
azeria has good ARM assembly & exploitation tutorials
also, like, lots of good talks out there; just watching defcon/cansecwest/etc talks until something piques your interest is very fun. i'd die on a battlefield for any of Christopher Domas's talks, but he assumes a lot of specific x86/OS knowledge, lol, so maybe don’t start with that. oh, Julia Evans's blog is honestly probably pretty good for just learning a lot of stuff and really beginner-friendly?
oh and wrt legality... idk, i haven't addressed it here since it hasn't come up in my own work much, tbh. if you're just getting started you're kind of unlikely to Break The Law without, y'know, realizing maybe you're doing something a bit gray-area? and you can cross that bridge when you come to it? Real Hacking TM is way more of a pain-in-the-ass than doing CTFs and such, and you'll learn way more with the latter, so who cares lol just do the fun thing

☀️❄️💎 - maybe for Merkara and Relu's kids?
Let’s go with a question per kid!
Does your OC collect anything?
Lua collects random things that remind her of people and places. There are dried flowers from several planets between the pages of her father’s journal. Her mother’s holocron is carefully wrapped in her sister’s scarf. And there’s the pendant that her brother brought her from his travels when she was little. The list can go on, but it’s always small things, something that can be easily relocated without a fuss.
She stared collecting it all during her childhood and never stopped. She keeps it in her room while she stays in one place for long, but she moves at least some of her treasured items to her ship when she has to travel. When Lua is far from home, when her parents are dead, when her siblings and close friends are in different parts of the galaxy ― her collection is all she has to remember and feel a little less alone.
What makes your OC genuinely happy?
Astara is at her happiest when she gets to create something. Fixing and upgrading things is also fun, but it’s not the same as introducing her own inventions. Thankfully, she’s always bursting with new ideas to the point where she barely has enough time to try them all. She would refuse to sleep for days because sleep is for the people who have nothing better to do and she’s got a project to finish. She risks living on a radioactive planet for the sake of her research on ancient tech. She breaks stuff apart and puts it back together in an ongoing cycle of success and failure because her projects give her life meaning. As long as she has her ideas, she’s not going to run out of reasons to be happy.
What makes your OC sad?
Overthinking. There’s a song line saying that nothing kills a man faster than his own head and Solaris can relate to that. He just can’t stop overanalyzing every situation that goes wrong, even though he knows perfectly well that it’s too late to fix it. He tells himself that it’s the only way he can learn and do better next time, but what he actually does is mentally beats himself up for every tiny mistake. The older he gets, the more there is to overthink because the galaxy is always a mess and he has to know what he personally can do about it.
Holonews are deeply upsetting because they’re so good at inspiring existential dread and proving that the galactic mess is just too enormous to ever be fixed. Solaris intentionally goes for positions of power to have something he can control because it’s less upsetting to worry about what he does ― at least he can do something about that.
It’s easy to tell when he’s sad and he would gladly rant about it to someone he trusts. But he refuses to talk about the stuff that gets to him too deeply, about actual tragedies that cause lasting damage.
#swtor#yeah I keep wanting to write about the kids#swtor oc#lua#astara#solaris#relu/merkara#jenchwuq

Intro post!
Hi there, my name is Luana, or Lua for short, and since I just started this blog I figured I’d do a little intro :)
I’m 16 and I’ll be finishing 10th grade in a litle less than a month, so I guess this sin’t the best time to start this blog lol. But even if I start my vacation in a bit, I’m still gonna study because really... what else can I do? Also because of this whole mess I’m like 5 months behind in every subject and I plan on catching up durig vacation. If I have the time, I’ll also be picking up Korean again, but seeing that I have every subject to study for I can’t say that for sure.
Apart from schoolwork I’m also looking for universities abroad (I’m from Brazil) because I want to study English and literature in an English speaking country, so I’ll post about this here too! Since I’m really into that I’m also looking forward to starting to read more and hopefully get rid of my phone addiction on the way there.
TL;DR
I’m entering vacation in a short time, but plan on doing a lot with the free time I’ll have then :)
Stuff you can expect to see here:
Aesthetically pleasing photos of bullet journals, notebooks, textbooks, etc.
Rants about studying
Studyblr challenges (100 days of productivity and stuff)
Mini book essays (that’s a hard maybe)
Daily reports/Journaling about academic life

Nintendo Switch Online, 1 year in review...
Well, well, well... Nintendo Switch Online...
You’re cheap, but you’re too cheap in return sometimes. I want to talk about it and some of my frustrations about it (and not necessarily with Nintendo). To do this, I will talk about each feature seperately.
Online Play
The most obvious feature is Online Play. It went from being free to being paid, which is pretty much a problem but then the competitors do the same. Many Nintendo games do not have the most stable netplay, even though I do not have most of the problems that other people get.
I’m not going to do a P2P vs Dedicated, or rather I would like to say that people genuinely don’t understand basic netplay and are all going against P2P without knowing that some of the games that works fine are probably all running on P2P to begin with.
I’m not gonna go into the details, nor do I want to say I’m an expert, each have their own pros and cons, but I think the main issue is ultimately the netcode. Here’s hoping with GGPO being open source and free to use for professionals now, the future could be a lot brighter.
I would want Nintendo to take netcode a little more seriously and test it in homes with slower Internet. Testing it with Wi-Fi and Ethernet and everything.
Save Data Cloud
This feature technically works. You’d think it’s hard to fail, right?
Of course they did when some games just don’t provide the support for it because of fear that people may abuse it for cheating... Meh.
Nintendo uses the exemple of having a broken Switch to where this feature might come in handy. Too bad this also means completely lost saves for some of the most important games like Splatoon 2 or Animal Crossing, the latter being really annoying if you lose hundreds or even thousands of hours...
Smartphone App
This one is tough because potential was there. Truly a waste of time.
All of the main services could have just been a website that works on PC and Mobile. But I think the main issue is that people don’t really want to check stuff about their game all the time because there is simply not enough feedback.
There was actually better execution when SplatNet was a regular website accessible on every device, Super Mario Maker Bookmark website too, instead everything is stuck to an app, limiting uses.
Content should be seen from everywhere when it’s possible. Making it work behind a subscription fee was a terrible idea.
And then let’s not even talk about the voice chat. That is a truly depressing thing. Why making it stuck to mobile? I get that you don’t want the Switch to process that stuff for performance reasons but truly that stuff is supported on it too...
Special Offers
Let me list what extra stuff we got from Nintendo Switch Online:
Exclusive Splatoon 2 Gears
Tetris 99
Game Vouchers
The right to buy NES/SNES Controllers
Game Trials (for only one game)
I did not list another thing that will be its own seperate bullet point.
Tetris 99 was truly the best part of this. It’s actually a pretty darn good game. Game Vouchers could have been nice if you couldn’t get the brand new games for cheaper in physical form.
Game Trials was a thing they tested at one point, but then they just didn’t bother...
We, subscribers, don’t really get a lot of extras, do we?
My Nintendo (Bonus Rant)
Nothing has been more of a waste than My Nintendo. Gold Points finally started to be kind of useful since it became an equivalent to a cent for the Switch eShop, but that’s the only good point I could give to it.
Its execution is terrible, and unlike many people, I do not have a lot of good memories about Club Nintendo (the European one, that said), because most of the cool items we only could get the stars we needed much later and then then the item was gone. That’s literally most of my experience with Club Nintendo.
When I learned that with the North American Club Nintendo you could get virtual console games and other cool shit I was genuinely disappointed how the European one was. And I’m not mentioning how the Japanese Club Nintendo had some of the cooler things than the west ever got.
And then My Nintendo has none of the cool things from any regional Club Nintendo... what’s the plan, Nintendo? Why does this exist?
The day 3DS and Wii U will stop being supported, what will happen to the vouchers that you guys always put up? Will it become even more useless?
NES / SNES Nintendo Switch Online
Now the real meat because that’s the stuff I really would like to talk about.
You guys know how involved I am with retro Nintendo content and I can be very invested about this kind of stuff because I just love Nintendo’s games.
Unlike many people, I don’t mind the subscription aspect and the fact you don’t really own these games anymore compared to Virtual Console games. I think this has ultimately been the better thing to do. However I find many problems with the execution of it, especially in the long run.
Due to its subscription nature, I did expect it to have less games than Virtual Console. Rights have to be renegotiated, and the most I expected were Nintendo games. Turns out we got some third parties, some even high profile, pretty cool.
But there are pretty infuriating stuff, like the slow drip feed we get. I get that you want to keep interest going for these games over time but there’s a lot of problems with that entails, and that’s how most of us are frustrated that Nintendo is not using the Switch to its highest potential, and especially about having all of the Nintendo games possible in a small amount of time.
Its portable nature wants us that Nintendo puts all of the retro games as quickly as possible, we want to dedicate our time to the Switch instead of plugging the Wii and Wii U for VC games that aren’t there. We want N64, GB/C/A, GameCube, and more. We want to have Mario Party 2 netplay in an official capacity, and so on...
I noticed the potential of retro Switch Online offer when I found myself addicted to Balloon Fight. Actually a game I’ve never downloaded off ROM sites before, as I usually dismissed it as being too simple. However the game was just there and I gave it a shot. This is one of the reasons why its subscription nature didn’t mind me, it got me to spend time with some games I usually wouldn’t spend time with, especially for NES.
I want to put a list of things that I want Nintendo to do with their retro offering to bring interest, but also sustain it:
- Bigger Drips of games
This seems trivial, but keep in mind that games have to be tested before going live, we pretty much want at least 3 games per month for each console. But stuff takes time and we at least want more communication about this aspect. We just want more games.
- Localized games
This is a personal pet peeve and only works for people whose native language is not English. I do not expect of Nintendo to localize retro games, but at least to release localized ROMs of games when they exist.
I expected of them to release these:
Kirby’s Adventure, French and German versions (yes, they exist)
Super Metroid, European version (that’s a bit more controversial however...)
Zelda: A Link To The Past, French and German versions (French even has an official 60hz version)
Yoshi’s Island, European version.
I know what you could say, 50hz games suck, music is slower- Stop. My only answer is fuck you.
Also, SNES 50hz games cannot have slower music, aside from a few rare ones. If you remember games having slower music on PAL SNES you have a bad memory and mixed up with NES or Mega Drive or something.
I don’t see how, as a developer myself, a selection menu could not be implemented for selecting the language for a game. That way you let people play whatever they want, it’s less painful, everyone is happy.
I still wish for Nintendo to localize retro games however, or maybe even bring unreleased localizations of games if they approved it back then...
- Random Game of the Day / Moment
This seems like a dumb idea, but when I played Balloon Fight I noticed how Nintendo could bring attention to games that don’t necessarily get it.
When the library gets bigger, some games will be left on the side over others, a system to bring motivation to play those games, even as simple as a random game name at the top, is better than what piracy can even bring you.
Maybe you could even implement a button that selects a random game.
- Game Tweaks / Special Versions
AKA USE LUA SCRIPTS IN GAMES
Now we’re starting to get a bit on the expensive side of things.
Special Versions of games aren’t really good on NES, they’re just save states. Some are useful (Golf Course unlocks), some are amusing (Zelda), but most of them are just a save state at the end of the game.
I want them to go on the next stage of this, actually hack the games, or even scripts on top of them. You see, some emulators have scripting features that can alter the game, in ways that improves them (map on Metroid NES), or outright gameplay altering (Kirby Canvas Curse gameplay on Super Mario Bros. 3).
I gave real exemples of use, these could be used to make games easier, harder, balanced, weirder, just like another concept that Nintendo did... NES REMIX. (What a waste of a concept... This really got people into NES games.)
I wish for Nintendo to use their LUA script system already in place for the menus, for their emulator.
This could also aid in development of localization of games without altering the ROM and without space issues.
And this could aid in making SNES Mouse games to work on a touch screen and more, it’s genuinely easy to figure out I could do it myself in a day... ;)
- Shared Library of games between Japan & International
...Well all I want is that I don’t have to need to download the japanese app or the japanese to download the international app to play other games that are not present in the local library. I thought this would have been solved with Super Puyo Puyo 2 but guess not.
This could have the added bonus of japanese games on top of the american (and european?) ones.
- Game Events
Sort of an extra to game tweaks, bringing events for people to play a specific retro game and give them gold points or something. Events could have objectives, achievements, scoreboards, many things could be done here.
You could even bring in the Nintendo World Championship ROMs, other competition stuff, or even games like soundlink games from the Satellaview like BS Zelda, BS Super Mario All-Stars and so on. These games are made for competition!
This is the ultimate thing to bring people to play retro games, bring the unusual games that most people have possibly never even heard about!
- Others
Some of those bullet points don’t need a big explanation:
More Unreleased Retro Games (Japan only or even anywhere)
Localize Retro Games that were never localized (not just in english!)
Borders
Small Control Scheme Help (to compensate for lack of manuals)
5-player Netplay support for SNES (Super Puyo Puyo 2 supports 4 player)
Netplay with Global Rooms with passwords and not just stuck to friends. (This should be a thing for EVERY GAME. This could even be a Switch OS feature.)
Automatic Matchmaking for certain games?
I have also always said this: I’m interested to work with you, Nintendo, on this kind of stuff...

BEST YGO GIRL: Round 3, Group C
Match 1
please use this as an opportunity to say why you like a character, not why you don't.
Propaganda under the cut!
Masumi Kotsu
she's the coolest and best duelist of the LDS trio it isn't even close. also has a gay little rivalry with Yuzu which is a delight. honestly her or mieru should have gotten a shot at being a lancer. one of the strongest side characters of s1
Luca
#best ygo girl poll#round 3#yugioh arc v#masumi kotsu#julia krystal#yugioh 5ds#luna 5ds#luka 5ds#ruka 5ds#luca 5ds#i love you child but you have too many names...
