Magnolias, Charleston SC.
Pan Roasted Halibut- Parmesan risotto, sautéed spinach, oyster mushrooms, carrots, grape tomatoes, blue crab remoulade.
Charleston SC is rich in history and culture. Not always known for the best parts of American History, some of the history is very dark and unnerving. I still think it is very important to learn that part of American history, even if you cannot understand it. I always think of The Civil War when I am there, but I have also learned a lot about Pirate history and the sea traders. I am going to keep this review more upbeat. Being from Massachusetts I was excited to find out that Charleston is Boston’s southern sister city! Maybe that is why I like it there so much! It does remind me of Boston, it is a smaller/walkable city, rich with history and the buildings are beautiful. The people are still more friendly in Charleston, they have that Southern Charm!
What is one of my biggest rules when eating out? Try to get a dish off the nights specials menu! The Pan Roasted Halibut was on the specials menu and I am really glad I decided on that dish!
The halibut just melted in your mouth like butter. It was very fresh and light. It is a white fish and reminded me of a Cod fish or Haddock. The risotto paired with all the veggies and the halibut made the dish taste like great southern comfort food. One of my favorite veggies are mushrooms and even when I am cooking at home I eat them with spinach, so this dish reminded me a little of home while I was away! This dish was decadent from beginning to end and I just wanted to have more and more!
Based on presentation and taste of the Magnolias Pan Roasted Halibut, I would rate this dish a 10 out of 10.

Magnolias, Charleston SC.
Pan Seared Sea Scallops - sweet corn hoe cake, pickled okra relish, brandy bacon cream
Fried Green Tomatoes- white cheddar & caramelized onion grits, country ham, tomato chutney, tomato butter
I have decided to review the two appetizers together. One dish was pan seared sea scallops and the other fried green tomatoes. It wouldn’t have been a southern dinner without Fried Green Tomatoes!
I have never had sea scallops on a sweet corn hoe cake. Hoe Cake is like a corn bread pancake served in the hot skillet. Well-cooked scallops already melt in your mouth. Now combined those with the sweet, hot cake and cream dressing it was mouthwatering and one of the best scallop dishes I have ever had. I would just get that as an entrée.
The fried green tomatoes were also delicious. I have only had these in the south and I love them. I am not a fan of grits, but you could not taste them with the tomato butter all over the dish. Perfectly fried, nice and light so you could taste all the different flavors of the dish.
Magnolias is home to some of the best southern cooking I have ever had. The food was fresh and delicious. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. Our server was friendly and charming! I go out to dinner a lot and I have never felt more at home and taken care of than I felt at Magnolias. This restaurant is a must go to when in Charleston!
Based on presentation and taste of both of these appetizers at Magnolias, I would rate these dishes a 9 out of 10.

Magnolias, Charleston SC.
Cornmeal Fried Soft Shell Crab- with local butterbean succotash with applewood smoked bacon, yellow corn, creole remoulade.
I will say this over and over again, ever since I was a little girl Charleston has been one on my favorite cities in the USA. In May I went to Charleston and had an amazing time! We ate and drank our way through the city and enjoyed every minute of it! The next few reviews will be from Charleston SC. I hope you enjoy the reviews and maybe someday make a trip to Charleston!
When you think of the cuisine in Charleston people normal thing of Low country cuisine. Low country cuisine is the cooking traditionally associated with the South Carolina Low country and the Georgia coast. It is rich in seafood from the coast with a vibrant African cuisine influence, Low country cooking has strong parallels with New Orleans and Cajun cuisine.
If you are in Charleston and looking for some upscale southern cooking Magnolias is the restaurant to go to. Magnolias opened in 1990 and it remains a forerunner in upscale Southern cuisine, blending traditional ingredients and cooking techniques with modern flair for artful presentations. When I was at the restaurant my waiter said “The soul of the South meets the spark of innovation in the dishes you can get here.” I loved that quote, and then I realized it was on their website, which I thought was clever!
The Fried Soft Shell Crab was one of the best meals I have ever had. First, the presentation of the crab was amazing. I love it you can see the crab, even though it is fried you can see the shape of it. The crab was not over fried, you could still taste the fresh crab meat. The crunch and the taste of the fresh meat was amazing and it melted in your mouth. This paired with the sweeter succotash and a little kick of creole remoulade gave the crab a mix of delicious flavors. Fresh, crunchy, sweet and a little spicy all blended well together to make the perfect dish! I loved this restaurant so much, I would recommend it to anyone going to Charleston who would like a nice meal!
Based on presentation and taste of the Magnolias Fried Soft Shell Crab, I would rate this dish a 10 out of 10.
