Grits are like oatmeal or cream of wheat but made out of corn. You can make them savory or sweet, I really like sausage and cheese grits, but also honey and butter.
Okra and tomatoes is okra and tomatoes. It's a kind of vegetable soup with bacon in it.
Gumbo is a kind of soup. It's a heavy stock, a meat, usually shrimp or crawdad, with bell peppers, celery and onion in it, typically served over rice. I first learned I was allergic to shellfish after eating two bowls of real Cajun gumbo during a mission trip in New Orleans.
Biscuits and gravy! Our biscuits are a kind of soda bread, the recipe is very similar to damper, but with more butter and added salt. We also make them smaller. We usually cut them into circles with a drinking glass or soup can. It should also be noted that the gravy in question is a peppered sawmill gravy, It's equal parts cooking fat (butter, lard, bacon grease) cornmeal, and all-purpose flour. One tablespoon of each to a cup of milk.
Lowcountry boil is onions, potatoes, corn, sausage, and shrimp.
Cornbread is, well, a type of bread made with cornmeal.
And hush puppies are what happens whenever you take cornbread and deep fry it.
