Huey's On The River, Savannah GA.
Lightly Fried wild caught Oysters.
“If you go to Atlanta, the first question people ask you is, "What's your business?" In Macon they ask, "Where do you go to church?" In Augusta they ask your grandmother's maiden name. But in Savannah the first question people ask you is "What would you like to drink?”- John Berendt, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
I went on my first trip to Savannah Georgia and fell in love with this Southern city. The beautiful weather, history, amazing sites, delicious food and open container laws made it easy to love everything about this city! My favorite city is Charleston SC and everyone told me that Savannah is very similar to Charleston, very historical and beautiful. I disagree with them, I think Savannah is much more beautiful than Charleston. I loved how every block you walked had a beautiful square you could sit in and enjoy looking at the Spanish Moss hanging from the trees.
One of the best things I did there was take a Hop on and Off tour of the city. You are able hop and off the trolley all day and see any of the sites that interest you. I am very interested in the Revolutionary War and Civil War periods in our country. Both periods of history are represented in Savannah as well as some pirate and pre Rev War history. I had the opportunity to do a lot of sightseeing while I was in Savannah but I was very interested in going to many of the sites that were talked about in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. I had the opportunity to go to the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences, that is where the Bird Girl statue is displayed. I toured the Bonaventure Cemetery and saw the Mercer-Williams House Museum. Savannah is a very walkabout city and you can walk from Forsyth Park, through the historical district all the way down to the water front. When you go to Savannah I would suggest to grab your walking shoes and enjoy walking around this gorgeous city!
While you are walking around Savannah it will start getting a little hot! That is when it is time to stop in the AC and grab a drink! A great place to stop is Huey’s, which is right along the river. They have happy hour drinks and apps. For an appetizer I got the lightly fried wild caught oysters. This will only be my second time eating fried oysters but I really enjoy them and thought the ones at Huey’s were delicious. The batter was a little too heavy for my likening, I usually like my seafood lightly fried. But, the oysters were not greasy at all. Sometimes with heavily fried food it can be greasy but that was not the case. Under all the batter you could taste a fresh oyster. The great thing about Huey’s is that because it is in Savannah once you are done eating you can take your drinks and walk along the water and continue enjoying the city sites.
Based on presentation and taste of the Huey’s On the River fried oysters I would rate this dish a 8 out of 10.

It’s become a tradition to travel and explore other food scenes during the long Thanksgiving weekend. I’ve enjoyed Thanksgiving dinners in Bangkok and Tokyo, and now it was time for a Southern meal in Charleston. I started Thanksgiving Day with lunch at Magnolias. The refined restaurant remains a forerunner in upscale Southern cuisine.
Charleston
Thanksgiving Lunch
The place was bustling and I took a seat at the bar. I ordered the Dear Rosemary made with Searsucker gin, grapefruit juice, rosemary simple syrup, and a splash of soda.

Since I had a a dinner reservation later, I skipped the Thanksgiving specials and tried a few appetizers instead. I started with the Housemade Pimento Cheese with Charleston flatbread and the yummy Fried Green Tomatoes over white cheddar grits with country ham, caramelized onion chutney, and tomato butter.

Okay, so I had to try one more app – the Pan Seared Sea Scallops with brandy bacon cream and crispy Brussels sprouts over sweet potato hoe cakes were wonderful.
My Thanksgiving was off to a delicious start. After lunch, I walked around and stopped by the historic Charleston City Market to browse various vendors and Charleston’s Candy Kitchen for praline samples.

Eventually it was time for my Thanksgiving dinner reservation at High Cotton. The fine dining restaurant serves Lowcountry fare using local ingredients.

I was greeted with all smiles and the nice hostess showed me to my table in the lovely dining room with heart pine floors and antique brick walls. I was actually seated at the same table featured in a scene in The Notebook.

My meal started off with a glass of red wine and some bread and butter.

I ordered half a dozen Oysters on the Half Shell served with cocktail sauce, mignonette, lemon, and Saltines. They were very fresh, local, and really good. I also had the delicious Charleston She Crab Soup which had lump crab, sherry cream, and chives.

For my entree, I knew I had to get the Joyce Farms Heritage Turkey Dinner. It was a plate full of Thanksgiving classics and favorites – herb brioche stuffing, buttermilk mashed potatoes, green beans, turkey gravy, and orange scented cranberry relish. Yum!

I also ordered the Roasted Prime Rib because I wanted to feel like I was back home where my family eats a ridiculous amount of different kinds of food. The prime rib was nicely cooked and had roasted pearl onions, carrots, au jus, and horseradish cream.

This was one evening that dessert was a must. I had the Pecan Pie with bourbon whip and caramel sauce. I delicious ending to my fabulous Thanksgiving dinner. And a shout out to the lovely couple sitting next to me, it was so nice chatting with you guys!

My dinner at High Cotton was fantastic. The ambiance was really nice and the outstanding service let me experience true Charleston hospitality.
I walked back to the hotel and actually made it to my room, no cocktails tonight. I wanted to get up early in the morning to check out a popular breakfast spot.

Fleet Landing Restaurant and Bar, Charleston SC.
Oysters with House-made Cocktail Sauce
Just a few steps from the City Market is the Charleston Waterfront and Fleet Landing. It is a short walk to Waterfront Park and the famous Pineapple Fountain. If you walk a little farther along the harbor you will reach Rainbow Row and the Charleston Battery, both are known for their colorful and historical houses. From the battery you can see Fort Sumter, which is where the first shots of the Civil War was fired. Fort Sumter is open for public and is operated by the National Park Service.
The perfect appetizer is always oysters! Oysters are light so you still have room for your entrée. The oysters at Fleet Landing were fresh and cleaned out correctly. There is nothing worse than having some left over sand or shell in your oyster. These oysters tasted like they are caught daily from the local fisherman. I don’t know what was in the house made cocktail sauce but that was delicious too. The perfect combo of sweet and spicy gave the oysters a nice spice taste. I have never seen oysters served with saltine crackers but the taste of the two did go well together. I know some people put the oyster on the saltine cracker, but I do not like to do that. I ate the oyster and then had the saltine right after it and it tasted really good. I had a great experience at Fleet Landing Restaurant and Bar and next time I am in Charleston I will go back there for lunch or dinner!
Based on presentation and taste of the Fleet Landing raw oysters I would rate these appetizer a 9 out of 10.
