Fraser vs. Zuko

OMG Fraser. That stare down. That challenge.

Fraser and Frank Zuko's scenes are something else. The tension.

Like Fraser and him peg each other right away as enemies. Here, this is not Fraser going there with a real benefit of doubt or appeal to good nature. Fraser called him out before and is doing so again. Just like Zuko was not appealing to Fraser's morality or being kind in gifting him furniture or with their first meeting's exchange of appealing to community service policing.

They play polite while every interaction is like a match off. And you know it is a mad dislike that reads not only morality divide, fear vs conviction, but also like jealousy. Who the hell do you think you are that you can get under my skin? *Coughs, skin in the game is not just morals, it's their respective relationships and influence on Ray*

I also love love love that in JIB, their scenes, especially the interrogation one carry over that polite hostile veneer. Haha ... remember when I tried to murder you? Haven't the foggiest...Happy Birthday. So, the evidence unfortunately proves you innocent and I want to catch the right one...dwell on how your business and relationships are failing. Yeah... seethes...hey, let me just rub it in that so are yours.

About Mirifras (Mother Miranda x Fraser)

Can I be honest? I love so much when reader/MC gives Miranda a taste of her own medicine.

A woman with unbridled power and oozing authority, meets her match with a reader who simply isn’t afraid to defy her. Or rather, a reader who’s willing to hide that fear away from her to play her cards right.

I think this is what fuels my attachment to Fraser so heavily, if I’m honest. Out of all my Resident Evil MCs (future ones and so on) she’s forever gonna remain my favorite in this regard. While I think it’s important to properly characterize each of the lords and Mira (because let’s be honest there are so many misinterpretations of all of their characters out there—like god, so many) I think it’s just as important to make an MC that readers can care about and understand the motivations of.

Fraser simply isn’t willing to let herself be a damsel in distress or a doormat. While she knows in terms of power, she holds none of the cards, she knows that the one thing Miranda (and by extension, none of the lords) can’t take away from her is her will. She wants nothing more than to find her father, and is willing to scheme, lie, and even go behind their backs to accomplish that goal.

It’s that devotion to her cause that draws Miranda to her in the first place, and it’s her unwillingness to simply abide by her plans that makes her fall head over heels.

For a lack of better terms, Fraser would rather die than let herself be reduced down to merely a lackey or subject, to be paraded around like some kind of trophy on a shelf. That makes Miranda want nothing more than to possess her, to keep her and understand how she’s so… unchanging. Yet, the respect (and ultimately, love) that she develops for her surprises even her. To allow her to get away with things that she wouldn’t dare let another say to her.

They are in an endless clash of “will they? won’t they?” and a need to see eye to eye. Schemes and lies, passion mixed with fury. I love them both so much, they make me ill.

Keep in mind, many of the traits that Miranda adores about Fraser are the same reason Alcina falls in love with her as well, though their relationship dynamic is quite different. Donna sees a different side of Fraser than the other two do, a gentler, struggling side that Chapter 8 is going to go heavily into. I’m gonna make similar posts for Alcina/Fraser & Donna/Fraser in a second but just!!! I’m gonna cook up some good shit these next few chapters guys

Most people agree that John should move on with his life, let go of Jamie and find happiness in a real relationship. But there are some takes on this subject that really piss me off.

I’m sorry but “oh I know John will never love someone like/more than he loves Jamie, but I really wish he could find a great guy and have a nice relationship with him!!” is not the good argument that you think it is.

That’s not getting over Jamie, that’s settling for second best. Well, he can’t have Jamie, poor thing! So he will have to take someone else who he won’t love as much as he loves Jamie but at least he will have someone to cuddle with at night 🥺

Why can’t John actually get over Jamie?? Why should he settle for the second best? Worse, why should his partner accept being the second choice??

I damn well don’t want John loving someone else like he loves Jamie because that shit is completely unhealthy imo, but I know that’s not what people mean.

Jamie being the superior god-like man that everyone is in love with/is attracted to/wants to fuck is kinda ridiculous imho, but I understand the appeal that a character like that has for the audience of a romance book/show. But to put Jamie so high up in a pedestal and to think that John should be forever in love with him and not ever get over him because oh lord nothing is comparable to King-of-Men-Jamie is… a choice.

Listen. I know that’s on Diana. She is the one who wrote John like this. But I wish people would be more critical of Diana’s writing of him instead of swallowing that shit up like it’s chocolate. Everyone knows how problematic the books can be regarding certain topics, this is just another one of these things.

Instead of accepting that John won’t ever get over Jamie/won’t ever love someone as much as he loves Jamie, you should be asking yourself: why is that Diana writes him like this? Why does she insist in the stereotypical cliché of the gay man having unrequited feelings for his straight best friend? Why can’t John truly move on and stop having romantic feelings for Jamie? Why should Jamie be John’s greatest love?

Outlander is essentially a romance (idgaf about what DG says). Love of all types is a running theme: not only romantic love, but the love that exists within family and friendship. And yes, there’s a lot of platonic/friendship kind of love between J/J.

But romantic love specifically has a huge role in this story. We have straight couples left and right in this series: Claire and Jamie, Bree and Roger, Fergus and Marsali, Ian and Rachel, Dottie and Denzell, Hal and Minnie, Jenny and Ian, hell, even Brian and Ellen are getting a spin-off.

So I’m sorry but it’s really freaking weird that, in the middle of all this, people say that John (the character with his own book series and one of the main POV characters in the main series, mind you) won’t ever be able to love someone like he loves Jamie, or more than he loves Jamie. It’s really freaking weird that people say that John has to settle with second best — because that’s essentially what’s being said every time someone says that John won’t ever love someone like he loves Jamie but he should find someone else to be in a relationship with anyway.

All of that for what? Keep the cliché of the gay dude in love with his straight best friend and who never moves on? C’mon now. Don’t piss me off.

love, even when it hurts, doesn't mean ends

Look, if this moment of supreme angst lives rent free in my brain, it can in yours now too.

This is my COTW moment. The my ship, has been absent for this run of the series, but she was never gone. That look of devastation! That Ray choose to run in front of the bullet this time. Again. That Sarah Mclachlan’s Full of Grace plays over the hospital scene and the lyrics “I know I can love you much better than this” hits in full sound with the exact beat Fraser looks at Ray, and then he tells ghost Dad, ya you went on a revenge hunt to kill the man who killed my mom, your wife, I understand, “I would have done the same”. And then leaves to go get this same guy, you know, who just shot Ray. Yeah he’s still talking to himself alright. I CANT HANDLE THIS.

I don’t care that canon went the way it did really because I take this. This moment says everything I needed in my soul to sit here 30 years since start later still going that, that was love okay. And just because it was their last scene together, that hospital one, or just cause Fraser walked out that door and into partnership with Ray K and back to Canada… They still have and had me with the unclosed question and my own answer of the subtext of why. The age old full-circle of Fraser. “I know I can love you much better than this”.

Proof, separation never means ending for my F/V love.
