where do i start? sam would one, love love love your personality! your optimism, free spirited, and silly personality is what drew him to you in the first place. it was like a breath of fresh air after stewing in dean's pessimism and the dread that hung over the two of them while hunting/ being hunters for so long. he admires the fact that you love to learn new languages and even would try to learn the one you're currently learning atm. this totally didn't happened but before the two of you started to date and found out that you loved to pick up new languages, sam tried learning one of the languages you already knew to try and impress/surprise you with. the fact that you can dance and draw makes sam fall for you even more, loving the fact that you have such a creative spirit and it shows in the doodles you give him as you absentmindedly draw on napkins from a dinner or even have the opportunities to draw on his hand or arm. it also shows with how graceful and agile you are as you hunt.

sam would be so intrigued that you're picking up witchcraft! though he would be hesitant at first but eventually open up to the fact that you are. he would listen intently to your ramblings about what you had learned as you researched about the craft. sam would smile at your fascination with the moon and how much you love fall, being to see your face brighten when you see the leaves change and seeing you bundled up in your favorite brown jacket (that looks eerily similar to one in his closet) as you guys walk together hand in hand down the bustling streets of whatever town you guys are staying in for the time being.

jo would adore your silly and goofy nature! at first she'd thought that your attitude didn't match hunters at all but as you rolled through the roadhouse every so often, she found it refreshing. it was better than the gruff and brash personalities that floated in and out of the bar that she was used to and found that when you come in, a smile stretched on her face as you greeted her eagerly. from then the two of you attached to one another like glue. she can always tell when you’re at the roadhouse because of the brown jacket you always wear when your favorite season rolls around. jo loves when you get slightly tipsy enough to where you start to dance with her in the empty bar after closing to the old jukebox in the corner or when you accidentally slip into one of the languages you’re learning or fluent in. the two of you as best friends would probs make the world collapse if you spent everyday together.

okay i don't think you'd have any enemies in spn, but you and dean would def have a frenemy/bickering relationship with one another. at first, dean would find your optimism a little grating and just confusing because why would someone so optimistic be a hunter? he likes to pretend he's a serious hunter but we all know deep down he is a silly goofy guy and seeing that reflected in your personality makes him envious that he doesn't express it is often as he wants to. so in turn he either shuns you or makes some off-handed remarks about it. but in turn you would dish it right back at him, throwing him off but then you guys would devolve into a little bickering battle, only ending when sam has to interject like a referee and almost separate you guys (sam sends you guys to opposite sides of the motel to cool down). but after a bad hunt, you sit with dean in silence and things shifted between of you. the bickering wasn't out of malice but dean has to keep up appearances and can't show that he tolerates you (even though by the time the bickering is over, there's a small smile on his face). he'll never admit this out loud but he finds it cool that you know a lot of languages and that you are creative spirit (you gave him sketch of the impala and he still has it to this day even though he said he was going to throw it out).

when it comes to ships, most of them i like but there is one where it doesn't make sense in my mind lol which is leo and calypso? its not that i don't think leo could bag calypso, he literally did lol, but like we've seen leo's perspective in the books and mans would not benefit from a relationship. another than that i like any of the other ships that are canon or fanon. i'm not a huge shipper myself but i obvs love percabeth, solangelo, frazel, and jason x brick LOL.

kripke era just makes me insane. season 1 is sam's conflict between his fate and his family (azazel vs dean). season 2 is dean's conflict between his fate and his family (duty vs sam). season 3 is about sam trying to fix dean's big, fucked-up mistake (selling his soul to revive sam). season 4 is about dean trying to fix sam's big, fucked-up mistake (drinking demon blood to [try to] revive dean). seasons 3 and 4 also prove that when they lose their family, they will inevitably drive themselves straight down the path of their destinies (dean becomes the righteous man and breaks the first seal; sam drinks demon blood to become powerful enough to kill lilith and break the final seal). and season 5 is their mutual confrontation of fate and family.

every single time, the main conflict creates a dichotomy where their fates, the paths they're meant to walk down, are diametrically opposed to their family, their brother. and every time the brother is threatened, they have no choice but to succumb to their fates—family is the only thing preventing them from destiny's warpath. they choose each other and that alone is the only thing that can save them. fate and family can't coexist because they were always meant to be enemies on opposite sides of the battlefield. it's a regular old romeo and juliet sort of tale, when you think about it, and it's only through the power of their love that they can oppose the lives carefully laid out for them—deny thy father and refuse thy name. it's a timeless tragedy. it's a toxic romance. god, what a show.

Sadly, there is a fairly new account on Tumblr that is led by an OG shipper returned from the bottom of the ocean to galvanize new shippers into thinking Sam and Cait are actually a secret couple. Try to keep up with the times, people, that's SO ten years ago. And, the Taylor Swift concert video is now being used as "proof" that Sam and Cait decided to finally "out" their "secret love" very publicly at a Taylor Swift concert of all places. Again, HAHAHAHAHA 🤣😂. Lord. You can't make this shit up.

Here's the actual video. 👇 Of the Outlander cast, Sam is the tallest male there, Cait is the tallest female there. It's obvious they would stand behind everyone for most of the concert so that their costars could SEE. If not, they would have been blocking them. Duh.

Sam and Cait have known each other for 10 years. They are good friends and costars. They have a bond via their shared experiences on Outlander. In addition, they've fake f*cked onscreen for 10 years, they are a wee familiar with each other. And as I've said MANY times before, most actors are not like you and me. They are a different breed, they are touch-feely, and flirty. That's just the way it is in showbiz. That DOES NOT mean they are a couple in real life. Why must I have to keep explaining the OBVIOUS over and over again?

When I watch the video, ALL I SEE, is two friends and costars having fun together. Hi. I recently finished watching Coffee Prince based on a few recs posts that you had put out and MY GOD I'm so glad I decided to give it a try. (This was the first Kdrama where I got past 2 eps) I loved this sooo sooo much.

Do you have any recs for media (queer or otherwise) with similar strong characters as Eun-Chan? Even otherwise, thanks for your great rec posts!

Another Coffee Prince convert! Thank you for telling me, anon, it gives me so much joy every time someone gets to experience it for the first time. And I am not surprised Go Eun Chan captured your heart, everyone who meets her feels the same.

Since I don't know exactly what about Eun Chan captivated you, I am not entirely sure what kind of characters you are looking for. Is it her generosity of spirit? Is it that endearing mix of bravery and naïveté? Is it the way she keeps going through confusion and uncertainty? Is it that she is just so lacking in artifice and unapologetically herself? Or maybe it's her gender questioning journey that spoke to you.

Given that I am not precisely sure, I am just going to give you a mix of great dramas of various genres with strong characters that give me some aspect of that Eun Chan swag--feel free to come back and ask for more recs if you have something else in mind! In alpha order:

Be Melodramatic (Viki)

Shan found another excuse to rec Be Melodramatic? Must be a day ending in y. But seriously this drama is full of fantastic characters and there's a strong thread here about being yourself unapologetically and finding the people who love you for that.

Great Men Academy (grey)

Another character experiencing gender, but this time via a magical-unicorn-induced body transformation (don't ask I could not possibly explain it). This story is all about Love figuring herself out and the bisexual king who loves her in any body.

Healer (Viki)

Chae Yeong Shin is Park Min Young's best character ever and it's not close. She has a lot of Eun Chan's relentless spirit and optimism in the face of life's nonsense, and she's a spunky one. Healer is also just a great action romance with a lot of fun hijinks and a very swoony male lead, if you're into that kind of thing.

Joshi-teki Seikatsu (Life As A Girl) (grey)

Miki is an all-time great character. A trans woman rebooting her life away from home, she is more assured about who she is but has a lot of Eun Chan's core generosity and bravery. I love her so much.

Kieta Hatsukoi (Viki)

Chaotic confusion with a heart of gold, thy name is Aoki.

Koisenu Futari (grey)

Sakuko, my beloved. This show is about two people on the aroace spectrum connecting and finding companionship and family in each other, and it's so beautiful.

Light on Me (Viki)

Woo Tae Kyung is definitely sitting at the "unapologetically themselves" table with Eun Chan. And he has a love triangle, too!

My Lovely Sam Soon (Viki)

If you're up for an even older kdrama, I love this one to pieces. Kim Sam Soon has a lot in common with Go Eun Chan, in that she doesn't perform femininity the way people expect and she is trying to find her place in the world, all while crushing on a guy who feels very out of her league. This is a journey for both lead characters, and I was so moved by where they ended up that I burst into tears at the end.

She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat (Furritsubs)

My girls!!! I love every character in this show. I don't think it's possible to watch this drama and not find someone to connect with; it's all about exploring the many different ways to be a woman and finding the people who will love and respect you for who you are. And it's very queer while doing it!

Twenty-five Twenty-one (Netflix)

Na Hee Do is a legend, and not just because of the fencing. This show is her coming of age story and you will love her.

Weightlifting Fair Kim Bok Joo (Viki)

Kim Bok Joo, another heroine wrestling with her femininity as she navigates coming of age and changing relationships. She's fantastic.

So, I was romancing Sam on every playthrough but decided to branch out finally, and now I have a tier list; ‼️Potential spoilers‼️

Tobin: By far my favorite RO. I typically don't like the archetype of "brooding ro and their charming ro counterpart" It just doesn't interest me as someone who has seen a lot of het romances employ this trope. But giving Tobin the chance they deserve and finding that I like how they respond to my MC's own flirtatious nature and then discovering how they feel about my MC being the same gender, just adds an extra layer of interest for me that I appreciated. They're kind, considerate, and very thoughtful of their friends. Very quickly blew the rest of the competition out of the water for me. I think their mindset when it comes to tennis explains why they're not the no.1 Seed despite being the captain of the team, and it honestly surprised me. I think the full weight of their route is explored best when MC is similarly looking to go pro as it parallels Rayyan nicely. Their kidness is the space they give you is born from experience and the fear of doing to MC what was done to them and I just eat that stuff up. Also it is very rare to have a black RO who is treated with any level of depth, and I just 🥹love that we Tobin.

Rayyan: In a surprise twist, Rayyan gets the second spot for similar reasons as Tobin. I think the enemies to friends to lovers(partners) arc that is presented in their story is intriguing. Like Sam, they have a level of history with the MC that makes them familiar when heading into the new space, so I made it a habit to stay near them when at all possible. Rayyan isn't particularly cold, or as cold as ppl might assume, I think they have a very good balance of being a sort of quiet and reserved person that still manages to be personable. I feel that playing like I do, my MC might've come off as flippant to them, which only adds to the anxiety that they feel going into this season. Their struggle of being visually Arab in a world and country that sees non whiteness as punishable is very felt. It's really special to me that the two most prominent ROs are dark skinned people of color. Sorry for being biased, but even when I wasn’t actively romancing them, they got major points for that.

Sam: My baby gets the third spot and I think that's fair. What i adored about Sam is the pining of a friends to lovers story. I never make the first move with Sam, despite playing very flirty, bc I see my MC with not having to put up a front with Sam. So the things they do or say that signify to others that my MC is looking for something physical aren't used with Sam; they believe MCs closeness with them is strictly platonic while my MC believes that Sam has been lightly rejecting this whole time. Just something about those missed connections get to me. (Also, the varcity jackets!? So cute) Now, Sam loses points due to being away at another university for a majority of the story thys far. Which made me wonder if placing them in a new environment with MC might change things for them. Everything IS different now; so, who is to say that their relationship hasn't run its course? Juicy, but due to lack of presence, I'll keep them at 3rd.

G: They're French. Automatically, a point is taken off. They're also very sexy as a woman (my MC is a they/them lesbian) so I felt that, to remain true to character, I would have to ignore that and see what G has going on. Ngl, they do sort of play out like a romance novel character in the most obvious way so far 😭 no hate though. I just couldn't not think about "Oh, you sexy French student." Whenever they said anything. Smoldering looks from across the room at a crowded college party, like okay 400 days of summer <3. I think they're rather perfect for players who are looking for some steam outside of the locker room. They have the same issue as Sam, as in, they're not present in the locker room. They're not our teammate, so we don't really get the same level of relationship building with them as u would a Rayyan or Tobin. And I don't think that's a bad thing necessarily. I feel that speaks to the amount of work put in to make the team feel real and not just thrown together characters. Once I started to romance my teammates, I found it hard to flirt with anyone else, as I felt that they just didn't understand my MC on the same level.

Felix: ngl, they'd have to get security to get me off them, I have this burning rage in my heart whenever they show up. "🤼‍♂️ This is for Tobin, Cakepop‼️" I am sure there is indeed depth to them as a character, I am sure it hurts to hear someone say "I can not love you the way you want me to." And we are only human, we don't always behave the way we want to. But Felix makes my nipple itch they just remind me of men who just hold this anger for their exes unreasonably. I think there is an interesting parallel to be found in a Tobin route MC and Felix. I just don't have the language to put it together bc I will never romance them and I don't think I ever will, personally just can't bring myself to do so. They are what I felt Rayyan would be, and I'm fine with meeting them with hostility.

All in all, I'm glad I branched out to see what the other ROs were like it's definitely a testament to ur hard work and is greatly appreciated. I will continue to be messy and kiss Tobin, Rayyan, and Sam because I am toxic aim to be a learning experience, not a lover 🫶🏽

Oh my god~ It was so interesting to see your gradual evolution / journey through pursuing the different ROs.

I think it's really interesting in particular to see how Tobin's character is sort of 'hidden' beneath multiple layers, and you have to really work at unpeeling those layers, and it's really rewarding as a writer to see that route 'give' readers so much unexpected joy.

And, of course — I have a soft spot for stoic / unexpressive, overly-competitive, serious characters who are secretly just a giant sap. For Rayyan in particular, I think their drive to excel at tennis is counter-balanced against their loyalty, their ride-or-die-ness with the people they love. I love the extra bit of psychoanalysis that you did regarding Rayyan's anxiety about MC not taking tennis seriously, which is fine on its own, but really becomes an issue if they're partnered.

Sam having less 'screen-time' than the others is totally fair, and I think (or hope) will be made up for by the sheer amount of history they share.

As for the whole "French sexy" stereotype, I actually do think this is a crucial part of G's arc. The idea that perhaps they both see each other as 'archetypes' at the start (the jock-fling during one's exchange year, the sexy french exchange student), and then as they start understanding each other as real people, and then as they start (possibly) falling in love with each other (with all the eccentricities, all the imperfections), the relationship takes on more depth and dimension.

sam’s a bright kid. far too bright for all this religion crap, in dean’s opinion. there’s no god, no big man in the sky that decides everyone’s destinies. dean doesn’t want some dusty old book telling sam how to live his life. that’s his job.

dean let it slide when sam was younger, chalked it up to a fascination with fairy tales, but sam’s too old for the easter bunny, just like he’s too old to believe in god. yet every knight, sam kneels at the foot of his bed with his hands clasped as he prays to go to heaven if he dies in his sleep. and every night, dean rolls his eyes at his stupid little brother.

dean dreads sundays the most, which is saying something, because it’s not like any other day is much better. but on sundays, sam begs dean to take him to church and of course dean goes with him. he wouldn’t let his brother go alone, but that means dean has to sit through boring sermons and over enthusiastic preachers telling the congregation that they’re all sinners.

they’re all hypocrites, every one of them. especially sam. sam and dean kill for a living; there’s no way god approves of that. sure, they kill monsters, but innocent people get hurt too. besides that, they gamble and steal to fund their lifestyle. sam has no problem hustling some poor drunk at pool, but he slaps dean’s hand away when he tries to take a twenty from the collection plate. if everyone’s a sinner, then sam and dean are the worst of them.

dean loves sam, so he tries not to get on his case too much about all the religion bullshit, but it’s hard sometimes. mostly he sticks to teasing him about it. it’s playful, but it still gets under sam’s skin. dean makes sure to use the lord’s name in vain as often as he can, just to see sam’s face twist when he does. dean rolls his cigarettes with bible paper, reading out the verse before dumping some loose tobacco from his altoids tin onto it. sam hates it, but he supposes it’s better than dean wiping his ass with the pages, which he often threatens to do.

dean thinks all of sam’s jesus freak shit is annoying, but what really bothers him is that sam is devoted to something else. something other than dean. dean is the only higher power that sam needs in his life. dean gives him guidance when sam has problems. dean tells him the difference between right and wrong.

in dean’s opinion, he’s much kinder than god. dean has no problem with drinking too much, fucking thy neighbor, cheating and lying and stealing. if dean was sam’s god, maybe sam wouldn’t be such a stick in the mud.

sam knows all of his little sins can be forgiven. that’s what jesus died for, after all. one day dean gets an idea: make sam into such a sinner that god won’t want to save him. he’ll be so lost and scared that he won’t have any other choice but to turn to dean to be his savior.

it wasn’t hard, really. dean knows sam better than sam knows himself. dean’s listened in on sam whispering confessions of his sins when he thought only god could hear him. lust, homosexuality. it was hard for dean to pretend to be asleep when he heard sam confess his impure thoughts for his older brother. he begged for forgiveness, to be cleansed, to become pure again. he swore he would never act on them. dean was going to make him act on them.

it didn’t take much. they’re already so close, so grossly codependent. it happened in church, on the lord’s day, in the back row of pews. dean’s hand had been inching up sam’s thigh for the past twenty minutes and sam’s pretending he doesn’t notice. it’s not until the heel of dean’s hand is pressed to hid crotch that sam says something.

“dean, what are you-”

“pay attention, sammy. follow along in your little book. this is how you get to heaven.”

“but you’re-”

“shut your goddamn mouth.”

sam does. dean continues to palm over him and he can feel his brother growing hard underneath his hand. sam sits stiff as a board the whole time, but never asks dean to stop. before long, sam’s hips are twitching, seeking more friction. it’s so wrong, it’s against everything god says. lust, homosexuality, incest, in a church of all places. sam’s cheeks burn red as his brother touches him and he tries not to think about the burn he’ll experience in hell.

“what’s god gonna think when you cream your jeans for your big brother?” dean asks, voice far too loud for their setting.

“it’s bad, dean. we can’t- we shouldn’t.”

“god sounds like a real drag. why would you wanna worship someone who won’t let you love your brother? you love me, don’t you, sammy?”

“‘course dean, it’s just…”

“it’s okay, you don’t have to worry about what god thinks anymore. just you and me like it’s always been, huh?”

sam squeezes his eyes shut and nods, panting “okay, okay” until he cuts himself off with a gasp. he just came in his pants in church on sunday morning. his brother made him cum in his pants in church on sunday morning. there aren’t enough blessings in the world to save sam now. he’s damned, and dean wouldn’t have it any other way.

“it’ll be you ‘n me forever. no god’s gonna take you from me.”

The Bunker kitchen is always cold, but it's at its coldest at the crack of dawn. Staring down into his creamed coffee, Dean wonders if 45 is old enough to slough off the habit of a lifetime and start sleeping in til at least 8, but then he remembers the nightmares he got the last time he tried messing with his sleep cycle. Maybe what he really needs is an extra pair of socks.

"I have something for you."

Dean looks up from his cup and smiles sleepily at Cas, who'd paused to get dressed when Dean had slumped directly to the kitchen in his pjs. He still wears his suit, tie and trench coat ensemble, thoroughly overdressed for 6.30 in the morning, but he still hadn't bothered to brush his hair. Mr Contrarian. He's adorable.

"I thought gifts were later," Dean says, instead of fawning. He has some dignity left. Somewhere.

"Big ones are."

"2 o' clock? No surprises?" Dean challenges - after his 40th, when he'd knocked Sam out thinking he'd been possessed with how shifty he'd been acting trying to hide the big party, Dean's (quite reasonably, he thinks) insisted on a strict birthday itinerary of his own devising.

"No surprises," Cas promises. He pulls his hand out of his coat pocket and puts a tape down on the table, flat, and slides it across to Dean with two fingers.

It's simply labeled in Cas’s looping cursive: For Dean. Dean picks it up and flips it over, no more information on the back.

"I wasn't sure if you'd like it," Cas explains needlessly, and Dean can see him fidgeting in his periphery. Cute. "I know you like to 'pick the music' but I thought you might appreciate knowing some that make me think of you."

"I like it," Dean assures him, glancing up to grin at him, and he's glad to see Cas’s shoulders relax.

"Good. It would have been very awkward if you didn't."

"Yeah, and you're never awkward," Dean teases, and gets a suspicious squint for it that pivots quickly into a fond eyeroll. "Can I play it now?"

"Oh," Cas says, sounding surprised, "Yes."

He vanishes for a second and then blinks back with one of their cassette players, one of those flat, black, functional things that star in 70s cop shows. There was a little puffy sticker of a stegosaurus on it from Jack's sticker phase.

"Ever heard of goodbye?" Dean complains unseriously, and happily accepts the sweet kiss Cas offers as he passes the player over.

Cas doesn't dignify him with a response, but he does stay close, hovering over Dean’s like a warm shadow as he sets the tape in and hits Play. There's a few seconds of staticky silence, and then, surprisingly, a recording of Cas’s voice comes rumbling out of the speaker.

"Exorcizamus te, omnis immundus spiritus. Adiuramus te, cessa decipere humanas creaturas-"

"Cas," Dean says, hitting Pause, "why am I listening to you doing an exorcism? Where's the rock'n'roll?"

"You like things that are practical. You're welcome." He says it with such sincere, smug certainty that he'd gotten it completely right that Dean can't help but laugh.

"So you made me an exorcism mix-tape?"

"It's helpful."

"Sentimentality, thy name is Castiel." Dean kisses Cas’s knuckles, delighted with him, "I thought you said there were songs on here."

"They're on the other side."

"This whole side is just you chanting?"

"Not all of it," Cas says, and leans over Dean's shoulder to skim through with the fast-forward. He lands expertly near the end, which should not be as sexy to Dean as it is. The Cas recording finishes his latin, then there's a long pause, and then:

"I expect you saved them by now. Or they died." A smaller pause, then Cas adds, at an afterthought, "Hopefully the former. Dean, I love you."

Click. End of the tape. It's only when Cas’s hand comes up gently to his cheek that he realises he'd shed a tear.

"Dean," Cas says, with his infinite tenderness, half wonder, half exasperation.

"Just caught me off guard," Dean protests weakly, swiping under his eye roughly (but careful not to dislodge Cas’s hand).

For around the first 6 months after Cas’s return, Dean couldn't hear an "I love you" without bursting into tears. He'd gotten better with it in the years following, but but sometimes it still hit. Like now. Cas knew that he'd only be using this side of the tape in an all the way fucked up situation, and he'd given him a small, unnecessary kindness. Another one - a charming little kiss is pressed to his forehead.

"What'd I do to get you, Cas?" Dean marvels out loud, and Cas leans back to frown at him, still holding his face in his wide hands.

"Quite a lot," Cas deadpans, and that sets Dean off laughing again.

He grabs Cas’s wrist to smack a kiss to his palm, and then to pull himself upright, his other hand blindly flipping the tape over and starting up the music side. As the opening Auoooghs of Gin Wigmore's Black Sheep starts up, Dean tugs Cas to dance with him to it, uncoordinated and unrestrained.

"Dancing wasn't in the plan" Cas notes dryly, but he lets Dean sing to his tie like it's a microphone anyway, and Dean can tell he's biting back a smile.

"Screw the plan! It's my birthday!"

"It's your birthday plan."

"Exactly, so I get to change it." Dean stops Cas arguing back by kissing him, which only works about 40% of the time, but this, it seems, is one of those times. "I love you, man."

"I love you too. Happy birthday, Dean."

The affection in Cas’s gaze warms Dean all the way down to the very tips of his toes. It is a happy birthday. Almost as good as all the ones after it.
