it is true but it is also true that that's why many people think mlvn is the flagship of the show because they have been designed that way since s1. ofc you can argue that will and mike were hinted as being close friends but.... how are you gonna say that mike and el weren't the. flagship. in s1-s2 is just beyond me... like there is a reason why the audience loved them and gushed over them and there is a reason why they think mlvn is endgame. it is not just bc mike said ily to her in a monologue. it is bc the earlier seasons are literally there. even in s3 it is there. like... idk. ofc ppl are gonna think they are the IT couple and wont break up it is not just 'heteronormativity'. ofc they gonna think el is the main character (and her boyfriend is the other main character that she gets paired up with bc that has been the case in s1 and onwards).

yes and i do think they planned for mlvn to not be endgame from the beginning (otp: will you be like my brother) but they've been romantically linked since season 1, they've got them holding hands on the s3 poster of the party, we see our characters for the first time again in season 4 and it's narrated by el's letter to mike like they're definitely the main couple still (mike's love confession even indirectly causes like the end of the world🥺🥺) even though they've been terrible And annoying for a while? people from the ga don't really like them anymore but they don't expect them to break up to make way for a gay couple because that's just not what usually happens. to anyone but bylers and mlvns they're just another mediocre main straight couple on a mainstream show and the reason why mlvns say "they'll never break up their flagship couple for a made up gay ship!!!!" and the reason why byler isn't obvious to EVERYONE despite having 1000 romantic tropes including some that they've used on this very show is heteronormativity but also it's supposed to be surprising
