Bakugou doesn’t always say “I love you” with words.

Sure, he can.

He has.

He does.

But more often than not, it’s in the things he does: folding your laundry just the way you like it, memorizing the exact heat setting for your tea, walking on the side of traffic when you two are out (it’s become a habit at this point, and he will get playfully physical with trying to switch places with you if you think otherwise), scowling at people who so much as glance at you too long.

The quiet, loaded things.

Acts of service.

Devotion in motion.

But when you two are alone—when the world outside your apartment fades and it’s just the two of you—his love starts to show in other, more unconventional ways.

Like biting.

It starts off soft, playful, almost lazy.

You’ll be curled on the couch, on his lap, while something plays on the TV, forgotten. Your hand will drift against his surprisingly soft hands, playing with his fingers to flex them open and close as you hum, and he’ll nuzzle closer, burying his face into your thigh or shoulder or collarbone—wherever you are.

Because Bakugou is an unreliable narrator when it comes to you.

And then, without warning—

“Katsuki!”

You gasp, as if he had just committed the most heinous crime, laughing as he runs his canines gently over your skin, slow and deliberate, like he’s testing how much you’ll let him get away with.

“What?” he mumbles, not even pretending to be innocent.

“You bit me!”

He huffs a short laugh. “Did not.”

“I felt your teeth, you maniac.”

“Didn’t bite,” he says again, leaning in to nip at your collarbone, slow and deliberate this time. “Just a pretend bite. Barely.”

You yelp and try to push him away, palms flat against his shoulders. “What are you, a dog?”

Bakugou smirks against your skin. “You don’t hear me barkin’, do you?”

“Should I take you to the vet? Get your rabies shot?”

His teeth graze you again, this time just on your aching shoulder blade that you’ve been whining about for the past few days. “Too late, dummy.”

He bites down again, this time just enough to leave a fleeting pressure—never enough to bruise, never enough to really hurt, just enough to say, Mine. His hand slides under your hoodie, not in a lewd way, but to rest warm against your waist as he presses his teeth into the curve of your shoulder.

“Why is this your favorite?”

“Because you’re soft.”

“That’s not a reason to bite me.”

“Or maybe you could just admit that I’m cute when I do it.”

“Cute? You just bit me like a teething baby!”

He quietly sighs and leans up higher, bringing his face close to yours now. “Wasn’t tryna hurt you. Just…” He pauses, nose brushing yours. “‘s weird, but I like doin’ it. That ok?”

Bakugou never bites when he’s angry. Never in frustration. Only when he’s calm, or smug, or holding you close and soaking in the way you fit perfectly in his arms. The biting isn’t possessive in the toxic way. It’s intimate. Familiar. He doesn’t even realize how often he does it.

Your expression softens at that, because of course it does. How could it not? His voice had gone quiet, and his brows were furrowed in that shy, self-conscious way that only ever comes out when he’s being sincere.

“You do know biting me isn’t how humans mark territory, right?” you tease.

His ears turn pink at the tip. “Shut up.”

“No, no, I’m serious. Should I be worried? Is this like… a feral wolfboy thing?”

“Keep talkin’ and I will bite harder.”

You snort and lean forward to kiss the tip of his nose. “You’re weird.”

“And you’re still in my lap.”

“You’re lucky I love you.”

“Never said I wasn’ lucky.”

But then, just as you relax again—he strikes. A soft, precise bite just behind your ear this time around. His canines dig in just enough to make you squirm, though there’s no pain. Just the warm press of his lips a moment later.

“Katsuki!”

You could feel him smile against your skin. “Couldn’t help it. You smell too good.”

“You are—insane. You are absolutely feral.”

“You’re still not movin’.”

“Because you’re hugging me like a bear, idiot.”

“Guess you can’t do anythin’ about it now, huh?”

And then he’s peppering kisses along your shoulder—soft ones, a little too sweet to match the devilish glint in his eye—interrupted every few seconds by little nips. Not enough to leave marks. Just enough to feel. Enough to make you shiver and laugh and squirm under his touch until you're warm and breathless from giggling.

Eventually, you push him away with both hands, heaving in breaths. “You need a warning label.”

“I’ve got a hero license. Close enough.”

“I’m gonna make you get a rabies shot.”

“Go ahead. Long as you’re there to hold my hand.”

You roll your eyes, but the affection behind it is undeniable. “You’re the worst.”

“And still your favorite.”

You sigh, defeated, reaching up to comb your fingers through his hair. “Yeah. Unfortunately, I’m married to someone who bites like a baby who’s just now getting their baby teeth.”

He grins, closing his eyes. “Better get used to it.”

“You done?”

“…Maybe.”

“Katsuki.”

“…Okay, okay. I’m done.”

“…For now.”

“If those leave a mark—I will make you do laundry by yourself next week.”

And Bakugou, pleased as hell with himself, gives you one final, barely-there bite to your shoulder and murmurs, “Love you too.”

The Batkids stepped out of the Fenton RV, staring up at the lime green, Frankenstein’d-together house with a giant ectoplasmic turret on top.

Tim whispered, “That building violates every safety code I’ve ever studied.”

“Which means it’s perfect,” Jason grinned.

The front door burst open.

“DANNY-BOY!” Jack Fenton roared, charging out in a hazmat suit and hugging Danny so hard he phased to avoid cracked ribs.

“And these must be your little friends!” Maddie beamed. “Are they in your ghost hunting club? Vigilante group? Paranormal protection gang?”

Jason: “...Yes.”

Inside the Lab

Danny’s siblings (by chaos, not blood) stood in awe-slash-terror as Jack proudly showed off the Fenton Arsenal™.

“We’ve got Ecto-Blasters, Specter Snare Cannons, the Ghost Gabber 9000—”

“That one doesn’t do anything,” Danny stage-whispered. “It just yells ghost puns.”

“—and of course, my favorite,” Jack said, hefting a glowing, bazooka-sized monstrosity, “The Fenton Anti-Creep Stick™!”

“Can I hold it?” Jason asked immediately.

Danny: “You really, really shouldn’t—”

Jack: “You absolutely can!”

Danny: “—oh god.”

Jason grinned like a kid in a candy store as he hoisted the Anti-Creep Stick and blew a crater in the backyard. “I LOVE YOUR DAD.”

Gift Time

“So!” Maddie chirped. “We made each of you a custom ghost-defense item!”

Danny: “...Please be small.”

They were not.

Jason got a pair of twin ecto-revolvers — glowing green, sleek, with ghost-seeking tech embedded in the handles. He was in love.

Tim got a pocket-sized spectral scanner that unfolded into a full laptop. (“It hacks through dimensions,” Maddie said proudly. Tim nearly cried.)

Damian was gifted a miniaturized spectral scimitar. Jack added, “It sings your theme song when it powers up!” Damian smiled — a terrifying, sharp little smile.

Steph got an ectoplasm glitter bomb launcher. She immediately set it off in the kitchen. Maddie was delighted.

Dick received ecto-infused grappling hooks that let him swing through walls. He hugged both parents on the spot.

Later That Night

The Batkids lounged on beanbags in Danny’s room, covered in marshmallow goo from Fenton family s’mores night.

Steph: “Your mom tackled a ghost into the barbecue pit.”

Tim: “Your dad gave me a hug that cracked my ribs.”

Jason (stroking his new guns lovingly): “I’m moving in.”

Danny: “You’ll regret that at 3AM when the fridge starts screaming.”

Damian: “Your father attempted to high-five me. I allowed it. Once.”

Danny snorted. “He’s gonna cry from happiness later.”

Meanwhile, in the Fenton Kitchen

Maddie sipped her tea. “They’re good kids.”

Jack nodded, eyes misty. “Do you think if we adopt them too, we can finally start that Ghost Hero Team I always wanted?”

Maddie smiled. “Let’s give them snacks first.”

That scene of Gem watching Scar… All I could think of was this…

I think Gem and Lin Beifong would be besties.

There’s just…. Something soft about him being concerned if Grian’s ok. He cares !! 🥺 it’s not much ok but we haven’t gotten a lot of softness from these two lately I’m starved

THIS!!! I just absolutely LOVE how they showed that HG was in his head about this by drawing him in the same style that his notes are drawn in. SO TASTY!! Also just… I just wanna take a moment to appreciate all the texture… this bigger lines where he would have gone over it several times? Immaculate. The cross hatching? Immaculate. The notebook drawings feel like they’ve been done on paper and it’s just so nice!! Very well done!!!!

SPEAKING OF SOFTNESS…. Oh my goddddd the feelings!!!! The feelings are developing!!!! I also love that one of the things he daydreams about is Grian’s grumpy face that’s so sweet.

Also yes!!! Finally a break in the case!!! I have some theories— (I can’t usually catch streams so they might not be the most up to date on what’s been confirmed)

Assuming the fungus is smth that our villains have engineered… is the fungus made to react to just Grian’s dna specifically? Like could it also try to possess other hybrids? Though we don’t know much about our baddies motives, I could see that them wanting to infect hybrids to sew more negative feelings towards the hybrid community. Hybrids are already second class citizens so increasing the hate against them by making something to make them look bad would just make them more vulnerable.

And if it is reacting to Grian’s dna specifically… That begs another question. Do our baddies know Grian personally? Or is he just an easy target? They seem to be targeting both Grian and Jimmy based on last chapter… I just wonder if they have personal beef with these two… or is it that they’re both witches in addition to being hybrids that make them bigger targets?

My other thought would be maybe they know Grian’s identity as CG and are targeting him because of that, and by extension Jimmy.

We still obviously don’t have all the details but aaghh I wanted to share my thoughts on it. I love this series so much thank you for all the work you do on it to everyone that helps create it!!!!! It’s so obviously a labor of love and I’m so excited that we get to share it with you 🥰

but you’d been quiet the last few times he was gone. not needy, just… lonesome. and simon, for all his hard edges and cold silences, knows that you’re softer than you let on. you don’t complain, never beg him to stay, but he sees the way you linger in doorways when he packs, the way you press your face into his shirt when you think he’s not looking.

so he brings home a cat. doesn’t announce it or make it a big thing—just shows up one day, duffle slung over one shoulder and a small, squirming lump of fur tucked under his arm like cargo.

“don’t get used t’this,” he mutters, setting the kitten on the floor like it personally offended him. “thing’s for you, not me.”

—but you beam. scoop up the fluffball with a gasp and immediately start baby-talking to it, pressing kisses to its little ears

and simon genuinely feels like he might just die on the spot.

“that my spot, sweet’art?” he drawls, standing at the edge of the bed, arms crossed.

“youre always my favorite,” you say, smiling sweetly—but you don’t move the cat.

his eye twitches.

and the worst part?? she likes to sleep between you two. like some tiny, smug little gatekeeper.

“don’t give me that look,” you laugh when he glares at her one night. “she kept me company.”

“she’s in my bloody way.”

and when she nips at his sock or curls on his pillow, he grumbles “fuckin’ gremlin,” under his breath—but never kicks her off. just deals with it, because you love her.

(he secretly pets her when you’re not around. she purrs like mad. he pretends it didn’t happen.)

but one night, long after you’ve fallen asleep, he’s lying there wide awake—your body pressed against his, the cat snuggled up behind your knees. and he realizes: you’re not alone when he’s gone. you’re loved. warm. safe.

and maybe the furball’s not so bad after all. (he still growls “move over, princess,” when she takes up too much bed space. but he scratches her head while he says it.)

and when he heads out the next time, he kisses you once—soft, lingering—and then crouches to scratch under the cat’s chin.

“y’keep her safe while i’m gone, yeah?” a beat. “or i’ll find someone who will.”

she meows like she understands. and when you wave him off from the porch, cat perched on your shoulder like a little guardian, simon feels something in his chest shift.

“Okay breakfast is ready! You can wake her up now!” Wooyoung announced.

“I’m sure she’s about to wake up soon.” San replies, reminding his boyfriend that you are usually up by now.

“She did have a rough day yesterday.” Jongho reminds them.

Yesterday for work you took the children of your school on a field trip. While almost all of your students were absolute angels, when it comes to field trips, their adrenaline gets heightened drastically. Which results in them being a lot to say the least.

“And on the day before her birthday too.” Hongjoong chuckles.

Yes!! It is in fact your birthday today! And since it’s your first birthday together with all of your boyfriends, they wanted to do something super special for you. So they all were able to convince the company to give them a day off today, as they have finished their tour too.

It’s because not only did they want to spend the entire day with you, they also planned you a surprise birthday party! First Wooyoung made you your favorite breakfast, then Seonghwa, Hongjoong and Mingi are gonna take you out on a shopping trip. After that they’re gonna escort you to lunch with your best friends.

Once lunch is over Yunho and Yeosang are gonna show up and take you to get your nails done. All of this is so the rest of them can spend the whole time getting the apartment decorated for the party. Perfect plan! Nothing will go wrong! First you need to wake up!

“Sooo who’s gonna wake her up?” Seonghwa asks.

“God she must be so tired.. maybe we should let her sleep more?” Mingi suggest.

“Noooo the plaaaann…” Wooyoung pouts.

“What plan?”

Your boyfriends then quickly whipped their head around to see the cutest sight ever.

You standing there in one of their hoodies, while rubbing your eyes with your sweater paws. Your hair was slightly messy and your cheeks flushed clearly you just woken up not even 3 minutes ago.

Your eyes widens to see all your favorite foods and just how much there are. Seeing it all and you turn to you boyfriends seeing their happy excited faces you knew this will be one of your best birthdays ever.

After parking the car, you four all went inside and immediately took you to your favorite stores. Plus some new ones that have just opened up. For the next few hours your conversations mainly consists of:

“Oh darling you would look so pretty in this!”

“Honey this is so your style!”

“This would look so good with the top you just got!”

“Wahh you’re so gorgeous in this dress!”

And hey you’re not complaining. Well… you did complain a bit at how they’re constantly paying for you (like they almost always do.) But they and yourself reasoned it was your birthday so you deserved it. To them you deserved it much more than you usually do. ‘Cause they almost never let you pay. But especially not on your birthday.

“Hungry darling?” Seonghwa then asks you after leaving another store.

“Hmmm yes! Very!”

“Then let’s go get lunch!” He says as he takes you and the rest to your favorite restaurant.

“Ah yes my favorite!” You giggle as you approach the restaurant and when you entered it you gasped.

“Surprise!!!! Happy birthday!”

There you see, your group of friends all sitting there at a table waiting for you.

You were so incredibly happy to see them. You’ve all been so busy with work that you just never had the chance to meet up. You excitedly ran to them and gave them all a big hug. Where they all wished you a happy birthday once again. You then turned to your boyfriends where they all had a big prideful smile.

They soon approached where you thanked them profusely.

“It’s no problem darling. Okay so we are gonna take most of these new clothes home, and after you’re done with lunch Yunho and Sangie are gonna pick you up okay?” Hongjoong explains.

“Wow she bought a lot huh?” Jongho says as he notices the tens of bags that they have.

“Correction! They bought a lot.” Yunho counters with a cheeky smile.

“Like hell we’re only getting her a couple of things for her birthday!” Mingi argues.

“And she looked pretty in all of them! How could we ever just leave them at the store?” Hongjoong added.

“SHAME ON YOU FOR NOT SENDING PICTURES!!” Wooyoung chastises suddenly from the kitchen. “AND MINGI GET YOUR BUTT IN HERE I NEED HELP!”

Yunho then takes the bags from Mingi’s hands as he gives him a kiss on the cheek and tells him to ‘go help the chef.’

Mingi chuckles as he jogs into the kitchen.

“On my way darling!”

Yeosang then showed up and helped all of his boyfriends carry your new clothes to your room. They all rearranged the bags to make sure it wasn’t a mess but you could still organize the clothes how you wanted. While doing so, Hongjoong finally took notice at the outfits Yunho and Yeosang were wearing.

“Oh you two look really good.” He comments.

“Hmm? Thank you hyungie!” Yeosang says with his adorable smile and a twirl.

“You do. You two always look handsome. But yeah Princess has mentioned that you look the best in these outfits.” Hongjoong comments.

“Mhm! And hyung you’re also always handsome.” Yeosang mentions before giving Joong a kiss on the cheek.

Hongjoong can only blush before Yunho leans down, kisses his other cheek and whispers, “Always so handsome.”

Which only causes him to blush more.

“A-alright alright! Thank you, now go. Don’t you dare make her late for her nail appointment!”

The two chuckled loudly at their boyfriend’s red cheeks and starts walking hand in hand to the door.

“Wouldn’t dream of it our handsome hyung!! We’ll be back soon!” Yunho calls out.

“Remember to let us know when you’re on your way back!!!” Jongho reminds them. Yeosang then yells out an ‘okay’ and his parting words too before they leave the apartment.

Hongjoong can only chuckle before going around the apartment to see who else needs his help.

You had a wonderful time with your friends. Catching up with all of them over some good food? What’s not to love? Once everyone was finished with their meal you flagged your waiter down to pay for the bill. Only for him to inform you that it was payed for. When you asked by who, he simply pointed to the register. There you see your two boyfriends were standing patiently waiting for you.

“Guess that’s your cue to leave.” Your friend chuckled.

“Damn girl they really spoil you huh?” Another joked.

“A little too much I would say.” You giggle as you touched up your make up before getting up to leave.

“Oh hush!!! Let them! The more they spoil you, the more you spoil us!”

You all laugh with you rolling your eyes sarcastically.

Your friend then wish you a happy birthday once more before bidding you a goodbye. Not wanting to keep you away from your boyfriends any longer. Soon you were skipping happily to your boys then engulfing them in a big hug.

“Hi birthday girl. Enjoyed your lunch?” Yunho asks.

“Mhm! So much!”

“We’re glad.”

You giggled before giving them each a kiss.

“So you’re taking me home now?”

“Not quite!” Yeosang says. “We’re actually booked you a nail appointment! So we’re gonna take you there now!”

Hearing that you squealed in happiness and thanked them repeatedly. It’s been so long since you had a proper manicure and some pretty nail art so you were beyond excited!

They then happily took you to your favorite nail salon. They actually helped you with choosing a design as well. The salon was almost empty actually so they could sit next to you throughout the entire process, conversing with you throughout.

Though without you noticing the rest of your boyfriends that were at home were asking of your whereabouts.

Jongho: Is she almost done??

Wooyoung: Show us the nailsss!!!

Seonghwa: Oh she looks so happy 🥹

“You’re welcome sweetheart.” Yunho says softly. Your boys then went to go pay before leading you back to the car ready to take you home and to the final surprise.

“Okay! They’re here!! In positions everyone!” Jongho announces as he gets into his hiding spot. Everyone then follows suit and waits patiently for you to enter the apartment.

Soon enough they hear the door start to unlock and the excitement in the room skyrockets. So as soon as the door opens and you enter first they all burst out of their hiding spots.

“SURPRISEEEE!” They yell. Along with some throwing confetti in the air while others were holding balloons.

When you saw them you smiled so brightly and giggled.

“Oh my booooyyys!!! Thank you so so muchh!! Omg the apartment looks so cute!” You say full of joy. You then sprinted into the apartment to get a better look at all the decorations. “Aaahhh!! I love it!!! Thank you so much!”

“You’re welcome princess. You deserve the best!” San says.

“Oh I’m so hap- FOOOOD!”

As you were speaking you took a glance into the kitchen and saw the array of your favorite foods once again and a big birthday cake in the middle.

“Oh my sweet, sweet boys… Thank you!!”

“Oh enough thanking us! Lets eat hmmm? Then lets put on some music and celebrate!” Seonghwa says before pushing everyone into the kitchen too.

At that you all sat down where you lovely boyfriends all made sure you tasted everything and that your stomach was as full as it could be (without hurting you.) In the middle of eating San then turned to you.

“Were you expecting us to do this for you? Were you that surprised hmm??” He asks just wanting to hear they all did a good job at surprising you.

You giggled at his adorable face and even gave his cheek a light pinch before nodding. “Nope! Well I was hoping you guys would take me out to dinner or something but I didn’t expect all of this! So yes I was surprised.” You explain.

Though while thinking back Jongho, ever the observer, noticed that when you walked through the door you weren’t that surprised. You were happy! But it looked like you were more curious rather than unsuspecting.

“Really?” Jongho then asks. “Cause you didn’t look as surprised as you usually are love.” He added.

“Hmm? Oh well! I’m surprised you planned all this out for me! And how much effort you put into this party hehe! I expected a balloon or two but this is a lot. Though I kinda figured out you were planning something like this when- …nevermind.” You cut yourself off.

“Wait What?? Did someone spill the beans?!” Wooyoung accuses.

“No no it’s nothing!” You try to save yourself.

“Alright who gave it away??” Mingi asks.

“Guys it’s fine!!!”

“Noooo! Who did it?” San asks with a pout.

“Well… uhm…” You try to find a way out of this but then sighs. “Just.. check our group chat.” You finally revealed with a soft chuckle.

They all rush to take out their phones to open the group chat. The one with you in it.

Yeosang: Okay we’re about to reach the door! Get ready!

“I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that, that probably was meant for a group chat I wasn’t in.” You say softly with a little giggle.

Suddenly you hear a thump. It was Yeosang who flopped his head down onto the table in embarrassment.

“YEOSAAANNGGG!” Wooyoung whines loudly.

“Oh leave him aloneeeee!!”

“He ruined the surprise!”

“He didn’t ruin anything! I told you I was still surprised didn’t I?? And I only saw that messaged like minutes before we reached the door so it didn’t make that much of a difference! Please don’t be mad at our sangie!” You say as you rush to where Yeosang was sitting and giving him a hug from behind. “He was just excited and texted the wrong chat.”

He then sat up with a big pout and nodded.

“I’m sorry guys..”

“Hush! No apologizing! You did nothing wrong okay?!”

San then reached over to pat Yeosang’s head. “It’s really okay sangie.” He says softly.

“Okay okay, no more chastising Yeosang hyung per request of the birthday girl!” Jongho then says.

“Thank youuu!”

“Besides you still have to blow out your candles and cut your cake baby!” Hongjoong tells you.

You quickly nodded and sat back down. They then lit the candles as they sang happy birthday to you.

That’s when you closed your eyes to make your wish.

A happy life with them until my very last birthday. No matter what comes my way I want to have them by my side. Always.

As you made this wish a single tear rolled down your cheek before you opened your eyes and blew out the candle.

“Oh darling.. what’s wrong?” Yunho asks as he softly wipes the tear away.

You smile at him and then at all of your precious boyfriends. Your precious boyfriends who took the time and effort out of their unreasonably busy schedules just to make sure you had a wonderful birthday.

Lord how lucky you are. You actually get so emotional that more tears start to flow and you let out a small sob. Your boys quickly coo you and move closer, worried they’ve done something wrong.

“Happy..” You whisper slightly before asking them all to give you a big hug.

They all chuckle at how precious you are and just so relieved to realize that the tears are happy tears.

“I love you all so much. Thank you for everything. I couldn’t have wished for a better birthday.”

“We love you too.” Seonghwa whispers.

After the long hug you tell them you’d like some cake now and then night continues on with some drinks, music, dancing and laughs. You truly couldn’t be happier on your special day and it was all thanks to your 8 special boys.

This was indeed the best birthday you’ve ever head.

Things like bringing you flowers ( “humans do this for one another to express gratitude” ), little snacks that he knows you like ( “this is an example of how humans show each other that they care about one another’s well being, by bringing them food, nutrients” ), or even occasionally one of his sweaters or shirts ( “this is to show I trust you with my belongings” ), hoping you’ll return the favor.

This man is a yearner, a lover. Before the both of you were even romantically involved, he’d come flying to your window and begging for attention after every fight like a kicked puppy (I mean, it’s not too far off).

So soft, so gentle with you like he thinks you’ll break if he handles you too rough.

Unlike the other marks, he doesn’t think you’re stupid for your accent. He thinks it’s beautiful and unique, and on a particularly good day, he’s telling you how much he loves your voice.

Sometimes he sits you down and makes you talk to him about your day purely because he loves your accent so much.

He lets you take control the first time you two have sex. He tries to teach you and talk you through it, but it’s hard to understand what he’s saying when he’s whimpering and moaning between syllables. But you aren’t complaining! The sound is music to your ears.

But he grew, and he learned. From longing ( and kinda creepy ) stares and brief touches, to sweet kisses that linger warmth for hours on end and gentle words of reassurance and love. Gentle, in public, at least

When the two of you are alone is when he can really prove his love to you.

Yeah, of course!

Well, when I was in high school I have joined the drama club and let me just tell you that there is nothing more inspiring than doing something you love with people who also love it.

My parents, for sure. I grew up on set of The Strider that my father was hosting for the BBC and my mother was the main photographer. We were travelling together around the world and I remember really vividly how we use to sit together for a dinner in the middle of nowhere and talking about our thoughs about everything that was going on on set and about our adventures in the new places and ideas for another travels. I was looking at them when they were saying that, with their eyes literally sparking with excitement and passion and I was thinking "wow, I want that too".

Well, between these little roles that I have played for fun as a child and the real begining of my career I was thinking about becoming a an interpreter or a psychologist and to be honest I think that in another life I would be soo happy to work as one of these.

Yes, but never by the people I was trully close with. There were teachers, high school pals, sometimes even neighbours who have told me to "get a real passion". But my family and friends was never like that, not even once.

My roles, no matter how good or bad they are. My style and hair. My songs and this weird sense of humour. I think... Just me. Both Izzy the Star and Izzy the Human Beign of flesh and blood.

Definitely August Diehl. I don't really know why he is my favorite one. He's just so committed to the roles he plays. Like, you see him getting ready for shooting the next scene, that focus on his face as he reads the script and you know he's going to absolutely steal the whole show. And you don't even mind that because it's impossible not to like someone so funny and charming as him.

That's totally fine, ask as many questions as you want.

I love you! It's cliché, I know but what else I could say? They're the people who are appreciating my work and are showing me that on every ocassion. Wheel of Time 3x08 - He Who Comes With the Dawn

Spoilers through all of s3 and through the entire book series through A Memory of Light.

The second Siuan Sanche started giving that absolute banger of a speech, I knew she was gonna die for real. You don't give that kind of speech when you get to go on afterwards as a character. That was a series-defining speech.

So, similarly to 3x07, we had one heartbreaking heroic death (Loial and Siuan) and one villain death (Valda and Sammael).

One of the things that I'd been wondering, on and off, on a practical level, was if the show was gonna lose four powerhouse actresses all at once (Moiraine, Liandrin, Siuan, and Lanfear) -- and we did end up keeping three.

My biggest worry about both Moiraine and Lanfear living was that we would basically have early s4 be a repeat of late s3, since Moiraine and Lanfear would just end up squaring off again, but the emotional stakes did change strongly for both characters, so maybe it won't feel repetitive even if they do.

Moiraine acknowledging that she's been suspecting all this time that Lanfear was torturing Egwene but she let it go on, hoping that it would break things off between both Rand & Egwene and Rand & Lanfear -- she's ruthless. We already knew that.

One of the things I had been wondering and waiting for this season was Rand and Moiraine actually being on the same page, which they are for a time in the books but that they didn't achieve here until Rand goes and talks to her in the tent before the big fight, so it looks like we are going to get that section of their relationship in early s4 (if we get renewed, etc). And Moiraine will be the one to teach Rand his lessons in emotional distance, which will be even stronger given that she's suffered a terrible grief, and she does go with him into the wetlands and etc, so all of that will be happening.

We got confirmation here that Moiraine and Siuan did have a bond of some kind, because Moiraine felt it when Siuan died. And that was kinda a mirror of Moiraine's 'death' in the books, though Siuan's actual death was pretty heavily confirmed here.

I did love pretty much everything we got with Rand. He was great in this episode. I will break that down more at a later point, but I was really happy with his scene with Lanfear; I liked his presentation with the Aiel; I liked the thunderstorm. It does seem like that whispered "Ilyena" was all we got of LTT this season, though, so they're saving more for s4 (which I really hope we get).

Poor Aviendha is, like, attacking herself ruthlessly (not that anyone but Aviendha is aware of it) when she's trying to tell Egwene that Egwene can't possibly still want to be with Rand.

And we had the echo of 3x01, where Egwene tells Rand to let go and to stop, and he's... I mean, that's not his plan? He's kinda doing what he intended to do. But she's disturbed by the extent of the power that he's wielding.

I'm guessing the controversial choice that one of our characters makes is Nynaeve essentially gift-wrapping the collar and handing it over to Liandrin, because she was hoping that she could reach her and turn her away from the Shadow, so that was an intriguing subversion of what Siuan had been hoping -- instead of Liandrin's feelings for Nynaeve being a weakness, it was Nynaeve's feelings for Liandrin that were a weakness. And it did lead to Nynaeve's block being broken, perhaps, so... you know, I guess it's a mixed-bag for Nynaeve.

And we did see the consequences of breaking the Dark Oath (which feels like one of the primary reasons that we got the Lan-Melindhra stuff this season, then, to show us what happens when a Darkfriend straight-up refuses to follow their oath).

I do want to get a couple of minor ship-related frustrations for me personally out of the way -- I wasn't thrilled that it was Egwene who interrupted Rand's scene where he was mourning Alsera, instead of it being Aviendha. And I wasn't thrilled that my least-favorite option for saving Mat was the one who saved him all by herself (with zero help from Nynaeve) and who got the CPR scene. Not enough to actually lower my opinion of the episode, but very much the case where I'm aware that my enjoyment of those specific scenes would have been higher if different characters had been involved.

Okay, I said it and now I will move on.

We got some Elayne & Thom bonding, and we got Thom revealing the truth about Gaebril (or as much as he can reveal) so that does feel like it moves up the time-table for Caemlyn. And I loved Thom attempting (once again!) to make his noble last stand but Elayne sneaking around and all of us learning how balefire works. And now Elayne has a reality-gun, so that's probably better than the Black Ajah having it.

Liandrin and Moggy are going to be teaming up for s4 (if we get it, etc), which honestly makes me feel even more like we could have trimmed some of those Liandrin backstory scenes in order to get some better insight into Egwene in episodes 3x02-3x05.

Rahvin did not appear to join Lanfear in her trek into the desert to try to murder Rand, but maybe they will team up in s4, which would be convenient for Rand & Elayne to work against them together, perhaps.

We didn't get confirmation of where Team Tanchico is going but hopefully Tear.

Mat did not get any prophecies, which was interesting. It kinda fits with the show being more prophecy-lite than the books and only using them when they really plan to do something with them relatively soon. I did enjoy his scene with the Eelfinn.

So he asked for protection from Power (including the One Power but Mat was kinda general there, so I wonder if his medallion might even protect from the True Power in the show) -- that's the foxhead medallion -- he asked for a way out, and he asked to be fixed. I'm guessing we'll see the consequences of those in s4 (hopefully, etc). And he did die, which releases him from the Horn, so that's now open for the show.

I definitely need to do a lot of thinking. It still seems clear to me that Tear is the most likely destination for Team Waste & Team Tanchico in 4x01, and those two sets of plotlines will line back up. And Perrin has his new bespoke Whitecloak plotline.

With Siuan dead, I am... I am very curious about what Moiraine's ultimate fate will be in the show, I have to say.

Okay, let's go through our set-ups and see what paid off:

Tanchico Plotline Setups:

Liandrin & co vs Team Light in the Search for the Collar; the Black Ajah having some powerful ter'angreal.

Nynaeve was helpless to protect herself twice in 3x01.

Nynaeve's relationship with Liandrin will come into play.

Nynaeve made a promise to help Mat.

Mat has the set-up of the twisted stone doorway and the snakes and foxes, and hanging.

Mat's fear from the Lanfear attack was that he would be helpless to aid his friends when they needed him.

Payoffs:

Liandrin's relationship with Nynaevea came into play, but the opposite way as I expected!

Nynaeve's promise to Mat didn't really figure in at all, but she did break her block, it appears.

Liandrin & Moggy ended up with the collar, but Elayne has the balefire rod.

Mat went through the doorway.

White Tower Setups:

Siuan calling Liandrin to the Hall for judgement will circle around to Siuan being the one to face judgement. "The Hall would have no choice but to... ... depose me".

Leane was firmly on Siuan's side all through the season and will share in at least some of her fate.

Verin was unprepared for betrayal in 3x01 - does she do better here?

The final Black Ajah Sister of the four 'hearts' that Liandrin connected was still unknown.

How much does Siuan & Moiraine's connection get touched on?

Payoffs:

Confirmation that Siuan and Moiraine had a magical bond in the most heartbreaking way. Siuan suffers the fate that she was going to condemn Liandrin to, but her spirit remained unbroken to the end.

We did not see Leane die, so I am currently assuming she's still alive.

Verin was once again unprepared for betrayal.

We did not get the reveal of the final Black Ajah Sister.

Aiel Waste Setups:

Rand's plotline about journeying into the Waste will come to a conclusion, potentially including elements about whether or not Rand has the right to lead the Aiel, whether or not Aviendha accepts him as the Car'a'carn, and we will end with rain like we started with rain, and possibly some more fully-realized effects of the corruption/madness from Rand.

Lanfear's attempts to isolate and manipulate Rand will all come to a head -- her deception revealed and her fury unleashed. Rand will see who Lanfear truly is. Lanfear and Moiraine's alliance finally unraveled, they come to blows.

What role did Lan and the Malkieri blade play? Was it key or was it a red herring? What happens with Melindhra and the idea of resurrecting Malkier?

Where does Egwene land on how she views Rand, and whether or not he needs 'protection' or to be stopped? Did we get any additional insight into her motivations over this season? Rand and Egwene's shared attack from Lanfear was the fear of Rand (going mad and) killing the people he cares about.

Pay-offs:

Big payoff for Rand's storyline. Aviendha accepting Rand as Car'a'carn was fairly low-key and she was basically just one of the Aiel in the crowd there, but hopefully now that Randgwene is officially done and Randfear is also officially done, Rand is going to have the emotional energy for other dynamics.

The Progress for the colony was going absolutely wonderfuly. Or as Xeno would say “elegantly”. Very little to no problems have happened. Unfortunately this meant almost everyone was always working. Including a certain couple cough Stanley and y/n. Moments of peace where once in a blue moon.

However, it seems like these two were finally blessed with one. Let me set the scene for you. It was a late summers night. The fire flies where out, lighting the land like stars on Earth.

You and Stanley where enjoying a nice stroll. Chatting away at whatever came to mind. You being completely unaware of the little box in Stanley pocket. Most would consider it a waist of materials and or recorces in the stone world, but they could simply tell that to his face if they dared.

Golden eyes scanned their surroundings, on look out for the perfect spot or any possible threats to the duo. After a bit they where finally at their destination.

A gorgeous natural clearing, the mountains where far behind them. Creating an absolutely beautiful background. Flowers where in bloom. And once again, the fireflies only made it more magical.

“This place is absolutely lovely” you said, looking around at the stunning scenery before you. Absolutely in awe of it all. “Not as lovely as you doll”. Your blonde hair lover replied, gazing at you with his gorgeous honey eyes. Subtly reaching for the box in his pocket.

Miraculous vs The Power of Love

I've written several posts where I talked about Miraculous' poor use of the power of love trope and how that massively turned me off to canon. Three strikes and you're out! When this topic comes up I usually bring up Adrien and only Adrien. This has led to some anger at the fact that I didn't mention love failing anyone else as it absolutely has. I've also seen some anger over my desire for Adrien to defeat Gabriel's control and win the day since Adrien is a victim and that means that it's perfectly fine if he fails to beat his father's control no matter what the consequences of that failure are. After all, the failure isn't really on Adrien. It's on Gabriel. A sentiment I understand, but don't agree with since this is a writing blog. I'm discussing the message the writing is sending not which character gets the in-universe blame.

I'm not going to change how I discuss this topic since it is my honest opinion, but I can explain that opinion in depth to hopefully save us all from miscommunication! That's why I'm making this post! It addresses all of the above. I'll be linking to this whenever the topic comes up so that I can include some nuance without having to go into all of the detail I'm about to go into because - as you'll see - this is a long one which is why I don't go into this depth in other posts. It would just totally derail them. I'm also not going to go into the deconstruction aspect of things here because this is already really long, but I do have a post on that for even more nuance!

If you disagree with any of this, that's totally fine! I just ask that you keep the your counter arguments civil. Remember, we're talking about a badly written kids show that none of us have the power to change and the magical power of love isn't real so it doesn't actually matter if I'm right about this. Nor is Adrien going to thank you for coming to his aid. He doesn't exist and, as always, my issue is not him as a person. My issue is the way the narrative uses him as a storytelling tool.

What Is the Power of Love?

The power of love is a trope where either platonic or romantic love saves the hero from some type of conflict or upsetting situation. It's a rather broad trope that can be used in conflicts of any size, but even TV tropes acknowledges that it's primarily "applied in dire situations to make things better. In fact, in many Disney movies it's the solution to everything." That definition is how I approach the power of love.

To put it more bluntly, unless we're talking about a specific example, when I say "the power of love" I am thinking of a story's climax or, in the case of something like a multi-season show, one of the climaxes. More specifically, I'm thinking of the lyrics to one of my favorite cheesy pop songs:

There comes a time When you face the toughest of fights Searching for a sign Lost in the darkest of nights The wind blows so cold Standing alone Before the battle's begun But deep in your soul The future unfolds As bright as the rays of the sun You've got to believe In the power of love

If it's not the toughest of fights or the darkest of nights, then the power of love failing may disappoint me, but I don't consider it an unforgivable sin. In some cases, I'd even be disappointed if the power of love was brought in before the climax! The power of love is the ultimate cheesy move so it makes sense to save it for the last minute if using it earlier would lessen or even ruin that last minute epic save.

To show what I mean, let's talk about another trope that Miraculous has failed to use well, but that doesn't ruin the show for me. A trope that has led the show to do the exact thing we just discussed: ignore a small moment when love should have won to allow for a bigger win when all hope seems lost.

The Evil Clone Thing

There have been an absurd number of episodes where the evil clone/evil twin trope came into play, but the three big ones are Ladybug, Optigami, and the season four final. In each of these episodes, we see a good character replaced by an identical evil version. We also see the good character's love interest fail to recognize that their crush/romantic partner has been replaced. That means that all three of these episodes see the power of romantic love failing. We also don't see a more platonic version of love show up to save the day.

The worst of these episode is the season four final where Marinette doesn't recognize that Felix has taken Adrien's place. That deception is how Gabriel steals the miraculous so it's obviously a pretty big deal and can be argued as a major fail for the power of love. I don't disagree. I think that Marinette's love should have let her see through the lies and dislike that the writers took this route to make her lose. However, I don't have this on my list of moments when the power of love needed to win for the story to work.

While Marinette failing to recognize Felix leads to her darkest hour, it does not happen in her darkest hour. Her darkest hour comes when she actually loses the miraculous which happens in a completely different scene from the one where she's deceived. It's also worth noting that Felix is not present in this moment of loss so there was no opportunity for the power of love to pull off a last minute win.

The loss of the miraculous leads to a scene where Ladybug is sitting alone in the rain, ready to give up all hope. And what happens next?

Chat Noir shows up to reignite Ladybug's will to fight via his love and support. She takes his hand, he draws her into a hug, and they stand together as one, ready to once again face their enemy:

Cat Noir: We're gonna get them back one by one…until the very last. And we'll make sure this never happens again. Ladybug: You...and me? Cat Noir: You, the best superhero there ever was... and me, your loyal partner.

A lot of people love this scene and it led to some major hype for season five which means that it's time to quote some more of that cheesy song that I brought up at the start:

Stand by my side There's nothing to hide Together we'll fight to the end Take hold of my hand And you'll understand What it truly means to be friends You've got to believe (you've got to believe) In the power of love

While I don't love the season four final, it is a B-tier execution of the thing I was talking about earlier. Canon let love fail in a small moment to increase tension and give Ladybug a "darkest night" moment. That darkest night moment then led to a semi-epic power-of-love comeback that understandably got a lot of fans super excited for season five because they assumed that it was going to be the season of Ladynoir. In other words, for a lot of fans, the power of love did its job in the season four final!

All of this is why I don't bring up Marinette when I talk about the power of love failing. It does fail her, but not in her darkest nights and toughest fights. Any time she's overwhelmed and ready to give up all hope, someone comes along to give her the will to fight on. That person is usually Chat Noir because he's her end game love interest so of course the writers use him! His "you and me against the world" moments may not be the most epic example of the power of love winning, but they are the power of love winning, so saying that the power of love fails Marinette feels like an overstatement of harm. She's never had a total loss.

The closest we get to Marinette truly losing is the season five final. That episode feels like an ultimate-level failure to many of us, on par with Ephemeral, but the writers clearly don't agree. For them, season five had a happy ending which makes critiquing that final fight tricky. I'll be arguing that Adrien lost hard in the next section, but I can't say the same for Marinette and this section is about her so let's focus on that for now.

No matter how much I hate the final, I can't look at the picture below this paragraph and argue that love failed Marinette because what did losing cost her? This isn't the season four final where she genuinely suffered. This is her getting everything she's ever wanted! The miraculous are back in her hands, she won the heart of the boy she loves, and no one is actively messing with her love life anymore. That's a pretty solid win even if she didn't win the actual fight.

This is further complicated by the fact that - as written - the season five final doesn't put Marinette in a position to use the power of love. She's never given a chance to save Adrien or even just talk to him. She doesn't know that's he's in trouble, locked up in a padded cell, suffering all alone! And Adrien's love can't rally her in her darkest moment when all hope seems lost because - for the first time ever in a season final - she never got one of those! She was a badass in the final fight! No pep talk or supportive teammates necessary! She would have had a total victory if the writers hasn't made her try to talk sense to the villain or sent her Adrien's ring just so Gabriel could make the wish, further adding to the problem of this show's absolutely vile messaging around love.

In other words, lack of love isn't why Marinette loses the final fight. She loses because the writers wanted love to empower Gabriel in his darkest moment, a move the writers have the audacity to call a mutual victory. (Gross. Abusive terrorist should not get power of love moments without a massive redemption arc first. It's yet another insult to the trope. Gabriel did not deserve peace while his son goes on to suffer.)

If you think about the episodes Ladybug and Optigami you'll notice a similar problem. The power of love failed to let Chat Noir and Alya recognize that their romantic interests had been replaced, but that failure didn't lead to their ultimate defeat. It didn't even lead the villains to a minor victory! Both episodes maintain the status quo.

This doesn't mean that I like those episodes. I would rewrite both of them to let love win because they're good examples of small moments where love can win without cheapening or ruining the season's big climax. I just don't view these episodes as times when the show needed to use the power of love if it wanted to honor its chosen genre. That requirement only applies when it's a darkest night or toughest fight.

Before we move on, please note that Ladybug was the power of Adrien's love failing, yet I never mention it when I'm complaining about the power of love failing. That's because I'm never purposefully listing every time Adrien's love failed and ignoring everyone else. I'm simply listing the moments when love needed to let the heroes win because we were in one of the show's darkest hours and that is the only time when I consider the power of love a true requirement. Love can fail in small moments to increase the tension, but if love fails at the moment when all hope seems lost, then why are we even here?

There are only three episodes that get that level of criticism from me and each one had a single character whose writing infuriated me: Adrien.

Adrien vs The Power of Love

There are three episodes where Gabriel's identity is revealed and the final fight goes down. Those episodes are Chat Blanc, Ephemeral, and the season five final. In each of these episodes, Adrien suffers on a scale that no other character has had to suffer:

In Chat Blanc he is akumatized and forced to use his cataclysm to kill both his father and the love of his life, dooming him to spend eternity alone in a dead word.

In Ephemeral he is akumatized and forced to use his powers to hand the love of his life over to his father, thereby allowing Gabriel to win and rewrite reality.

In the season five final, Adrien is left alone in a jail cell, tormented by nightmares while his father dies leaving Adrien an orphan. Adrien is then told some truly colossal lies about what actually happened, leading him to believe that Gabriel scarified himself to save Ladybug's life. Since Chat Noir's usual role in fights is protecting Ladybug, this is arguably the equivalent of Adrien being told that his failure to show up killed his father. I'm not even sure if that's the wrong message because Gabriel did die from a cataclysm and Adrien would understandably blame himself for that, too, so maybe this was a way to address that without going too dark for kids and why does that argument hold water? Wtf was this trash fire of a story line???

When you compare Adrien's treatment in these episodes to something like Marinette's treatment in season four final you can hopefully see why it feels like comparing a broken arm to a mortal blow. It's not that Marinette doesn't suffer. In terms of individual moments of suffering, Marinette beats out every other character! But while she may beat Adrien in breadth, he is the clear winner in terms of depth and the only one who never gets a true power of love moment.

Marinette's darkest nights and toughest fights ultimately work out so that she can go on to some new type of suffering, the old suffering fading away to nothing more than memory. Adrien's darkest nights and toughest fights lead to loss and suffering for which there is no cure other than rewinding time or rewriting reality. The season five final even has Adrien directly state that he's not worthy of Marinette's love:

Adrien: I'm not in my right mind. I'm too angry — at myself for falling short of Marinette's love, at my father for sending me here in London, at this stupid app and these rings that use my image... it makes me sick! This nightmare is giving me the horrible feeling that, if I transform, I'll get akumatized and destroy everything with my Cataclysm — Marinette, Ladybug... (Takes off the ring and hands it to Plagg.) Plagg: Surely Ladybug can help you. Adrien: If I ask her for help, I'd have to give her information that would jeopardize my secret identity... and I can't.

This is literally Adrien's last scene in the main story line. He doesn't show up again until the happily ever after epilogue where he and Marinette kiss. In other words, the show had Adrien directly state that he's unworthy of Marinette's love and then did nothing to counter that statement. I guess this poor unfortunate soul is just lucky that Marinette likes him enough to keep him around in spite of his many failings...

Writers, seriously, what the hell are you doing? This is the kind of dialogue that should lead into a power of love moment! How is thinking about Marinette leading Adrien to despair instead of strength? Why is Plagg just accepting this? Plagg is a magical being who was assigned to watch over Adrien. Shouldn't a character like that help Adrien rally in his darkest night? Where's Adrien's you and me against the world pep talk? That should go both ways!!! Have him break out, call Ladybug to tell her that he's not coming, only for her to rally him so he comes and at least fights outside in the city while she does her solo fight! Don't leave him alone to rot while almost every other character in the freaking show gets to fight!

It would be one thing if Adrien gave up because he was alone and scared, but Plagg is there and the writers directly bring up Marinette and love only to do nothing to show those as positive forces in Adrien's life!!! Instead, Marinette is the thing that keeps him from the fight because Adrien's nightmare is him getting akumatized and killing Marinette even though Adrien knows nothing about Chat Blanc.

To be clear, in each of the three episodes I listed above, Adrien is undeniably a victim suffering at the hands of his main abuser. They're also some of the worst moments of abuse in the entire show. It would be perfectly reasonable for a real life person to give into despair if they were put into this situation, but real life people don't transform into magical cat boys who wield the raw power of Destruction. I was not looking for realism here. I was looking for hope and inspiration!

I wanted to see Adrien win! I wanted his love for Marinette and/or his friends to give him the strength to overpower his father's control because that's what the power of love is all about! When all hope seems lost, it's there to let the hero win because love is stronger than despair, hatred, fear, and magical remote controls! It is the bright light that blasts away the darkness in your darkest night! Unless your name is Adrien Agreste, then no love for you! Suffer, feather boy, suffer!

Example of what I wanted from canon

There are many ways to fix these three episodes so love wins, but to keep this simple let's focus on Chat Blanc and what the power of love winning might look like if we let canon play unchanged up until the moment where Adrien loses control of his powers:

Hawk Moth: Cat Blanc, I'm giving you the infinite power of destruction!! Together, you and I will seize Ladybug's Miraculous and awaken your mother!!! Obey!!! Cat Noir: (tries to fight back but fails) I'm sorry, Ladybug! (He succumbs his akumatization and transforms into Cat Blanc. Ladybug watches in horror at his transformation.) Hawk Moth: Seize her Miraculous, My Son!!! (Cat Blanc lifts his right arm to Ladybug, activating Mega Cataclysm.) Ladybug: No, Adrien! You have to resist!! (Cat Blanc whimpers as he changes his mind and points his arm to Hawk Moth.) Hawk Moth: How dare you!? Not me, Adrien!! Cat Blanc: (whimpering while looking to both of them) I... I don't know what to do!!!!!!

Instead of having the mega cataclysm go off here, we instead see this: Ladybug and Hawk Moth both realize that Chat Blanc is incapable of listening to either of them. Hawk Moth's reaction is to turn and run away, desperate to save himself. Ladybug's reaction is to run to her boyfriend's side, not caring about the danger. She wraps her arms around him, closes her eyes, and tells him that it's okay. That she's here and she loves him and she'll stay here and love him no matter what. It doesn't matter who his father is, it's still him and her against the world now and forever.

The more she talks, the weaker the mega cataclysm grows. By the time she makes her final vow, the mega cataclysm is little more than a flickering glow. A black clad hand touches both of her hair ties, disintegrating them, leaving her hair to fall free around her face since that was a thing in this episode. The minor wardrobe change makes her pull back and look at her boyfriend to see that he's back to Chat Noir, a purified akumas fluttering off in the distance. Chat Noir is crying, clearly distraught, but he's himself again because Marinette's presence allowed him to focus on her love over his father's poison. They won. Love won. Fear and abuse lost.

The couple embraces. Hawk Moth's big gambit failed and they now know his identity so the fight is almost over. Paris will soon be free.

From there you can have an epic battle with the temp holders where the butterfly and the peacock are recovered. Nino gets to punch Gabriel in the face a dozen times or so as a treat and Adrien gets to cuddle up with some treats, sitting the fight out since he's already done his part by surviving the reveal of his father's identity.

You could also have Gabriel just give up because he doesn't have any moves left and the full implications of what he did are smacking him in the face, sapping him of the will to fight. Anything that lets this asshole suffer is fine by me! Emilie's fate is up to you. I like to make her at least semi-decent and revive her to give Adrien a happier ending and Gabriel the horror of divorce papers, but that's just me.

Final Thoughts

As I said at the top, I'm going to continue to complain about the way that Adrien was written in these episodes. I don't consider his victim status a reasonable excuse for the way these episodes played out. If anything, his victim status is an even bigger black mark against the writing!

I come to family-oriented media for hope and happy endings! I want stories about victims being empowered! I want Gabriel's controlling nature to totally backfire on him and not in a mutually-assured-destruction way like we saw in Chat Blanc. I want Gabriel's choice to cost him everything and for him to suffer that loss for the rest of his life while Adrien gets endless love and support, allowing him to survive the reveal and go on to live a happy life. If that's not what you're selling, then I'm not buying thus me giving up on canon after the season five final. There's just no coming back from that kind of colossal writing failure.

I will try to remember to use the word "forced" when describing the problems (as in "forced to kill"), but that's the only thing I can change while still sharing my honest opinion since my main problem with these episodes isn't Gabriel's treatment of Adrien. While I don't like how far these episodes took Gabriel, you don't need to rewrite him to make the episodes work. It doesn't matter how far the writing takes Gabriel, he should never be able to successfully manipulate Adrien while threatening Adrien's supposed True Love.

As soon as Adrien knows that Marinette/Ladybug is in danger, it should be game over for Gabriel because love is supposed to be stronger than all of the awful things that Gabriel has done up to and including the sentimonster crap. In fact, the sentimonster crap just makes it even more important for Adrien to win! Gabriel should think he has victory in the bag because he views Adrien as a perfect doll, but love proves Gabriel wrong letting Adrien overpower his amok and win. The trope is called "love conquers all" not "love conquers the mildly inconvenient." The more dire the straits, the more important the win!

Unfortunately, that's not the message Miraculous is sending. By letting Adrien give into his father's control in the show's darkest hours, the message is that Gabriel's control is stronger than love. That Adrien will never be free. That he was Gabriel's perfect doll and you were silly if you ever expected him to be more than that. That's not a message that I'm that ever going to agree with and is yet another reason why I only bring up Adrien + these three episodes when I talk about the power of love failing.

You are never going to convince me that Adrien being allowed to give into despair was a good thing unless you pair that argument with some major changes to canon like love square not being together and/or Adrien not knowing that his actions would endanger Marinette. Even then you need to design that fix in a way that ultimately allows Adrien to win otherwise you are sending a terrible message to the audience. There should never be a scenario where the final battle ends the way canon had it end.

Gabriel is the show's big bad, Adrien is his main victim, and the theme of their relationship has been control. That means that, when it comes to the final fight with Gabriel, Adrien needs to be involved in a way that gives him agency. I'm not saying he needs to fight his father on his own or even at all! I'm okay with him sitting out the fight so long as you pair it with something big like Adrien being the one to learn Gabriel's identity or something more dramatic like my simple Chat Blanc fix.

However, Adrien sitting out only works if it's his own, freely-made choice. As soon as you pair it with something like magic nightmare dust you are once again sending the message that Gabriel's control is the strongest force in Adrien's life. I truly don't understand how anyone can embrace that message and call it good, especially when canon didn't ultimately do something positive with it like letting Adrien become stronger as time went on. He actually got weaker as the show went on!

Chat Blanc saw everyone lose because Adrien was able to at least try to fight back, denying his father total victory. Ephemeral saw none of that fighting spirit and Gabriel just outright won. Season five once again saw Gabriel win only, this time, the show didn't even let Adrien be part of the fight. What an uplifting character arc for Adrien! (That was sarcasm.) Play the episodes in reverse order and you might actually have something if you add a fourth one where he finally wins!

If you want to talk about more minor conflicts where the power of love should have won then I'm happy to do that! Canon has lots of options to pick from! But unless you specify that you want to talk about something minor, these three episodes are going to be my only examples of the power of love failing because they are the only times when love completely failed the character in question. Total loss, no silver lining, writers wtf are you doing?

Listing times when love failed Marinette or Alya in the same list as these three episodes just feels insulting to Adrien unless the context is something like a list ranking the failures from smallest to largest. I'll once again point out that I don't even list the other times when love failed Adrien because my issue isn't Adrien as a person. My issue is Adrien as a tool of the narrative and the asinine message that the Agreste arc sends to the young children this show is aimed at. I wouldn't even be okay with this in a show aimed at adults unless it was clearly marketed as a grimdark take on superheroes. Miraculous should not feel like a kiddiefied version of The Boys and yet here we are.

Why was Adrien granted magical powers and allowed to fight his controlling father for five seasons if Gabriel was just going to die without Adrien getting a decisive victory? Why focus season five on Gabriel controlling Adrien to such an extreme if Adrien was never going to be allowed to break free? Why make Adrien the main love interest and focus the entire show on romantic love if you don't have anything positive to say about romantic love? Why bother getting the love square together before every single final showdown in the freaking show if their relationship status was going to mean nothing? Where is my power of love always so strong?

(Btw, that song I kept quoting is from the original English dub soundtrack to Sailor Moon R - The Promise of the Rose. It plays as love and friendship save the planet Earth from an asteroid. The updated dub replaced the song with the original Japanese soundtrack and the comments are full of people complaining about the change because the song just takes this scene to the next level! I bring this up because Sailor Moon set many people's standards for the magical girl team show genre that Miraculous is clearly taking inspiration from, but failing to fully embrace. If you don't want love and friendship to be on par with nuclear weapons and asteroid attacks, then don't write a show about love and magic aimed at kids.)
