siobhan thompson appreciation post because her characters just make me so happy and they're so. good. she's so good at characters! spoilers for every intrepid heroes season of d20. i could do a whole other post about her sidequest characters bc they're so good.
Adaine Abernant. The Elven Oracle. She's always been one of my absolute favorite characters ever. Her anxiety representation in the first season makes me feel more seen, understood, and represented than any other character ever. She's literally so cool! She starts freshman year as an awkward nerd and becomes a cool nerd! Her anxiety never goes away, but the medication makes it manageable. She hates her parents because they're awful! Just the rep of having awful parents and hating them and that's okay because they suck! You should hate your parents if they suck as bad as the Abernants! Not everyone gets a redemption arc. If they suck, they suck.
Misty/Rowan. Misty is the perfect representation of an old lady who gives no fucks. She flirts so hard with that guy at the pixie wedding. She openly admits to having been friends with John Wilkes Booth. But at the same time? Will not give her age. A lady never tells. She's absolutely ancient and doesn't fucking care, but she also has this undertone of absolute existential panic because she needs adoration to survive! She stays relevant because she has to! Don't get me started on Rowan. I have a crush on Rowan Berry. She's reborn and immediately starts flirting with Pete, which is iconic in its own right. She's a bard who gives bardic inspiration by either flirting or complimenting, and sometimes the lines blur just a little bit. Absolute queen shit. She defeats the queen of Faerie and has no desire to go back until the Fae court tells her hey. You left us with no leader. And then brings democracy to Faerie! President Rowan!
Ruby Rocks! She starts the season as a kid who loves her sister just so much. That's the most integral part of her character. She's a princess and a rogue, and she loves her sister. She has a lot of development over the season! She ends as a woman who fights for her family and her country. She hates Saccharina when they first meet, a new sister on the tails of the loss of the most important person she's ever had. After Jet's death, she's overcome with grief and takes a level of shadow sorcerer because of it! Her development is amazing, a truly wonderful arc.
Iga Lizowski! Oh. My. God. She's the first pc that is a mom in d20, or at least in the Intrepid Heroes. Her relationship with her kids is so fun to watch, from urging Jessica to engage with the chest to bringing her into another part of the Unsleeping City. Then Nick, who she hadn't pressed at all to take responsibility for the chest, decides to become another defender of his family's magic! Not only is she an amazing mother, she's a fortune teller by trade! She knows full well that everything she does has merit, and that magic is real, but makes it all seem like a lie to cater to her clientele. It's not her intention to become a part of the Dream Team, but when her family is threatened, she fights like hell. Also she has a pseudodragon that's just a magical chihuahua and that's so old ladycore it's such a perfect choice.
Riva. They're just on their gallivant, honestly. They decorate their psychodrone with magnets. They're trying to sell pleasure putty. They make their own hours, but they don't know how. Riva is sweet and fun and naive. They love their friends and they love the outside world and they're having a great ass time on their gallivant.
Rosamund. Du. Prix. Quick little shoutout to Siobhan's princess voice because no joke she did my favorite accent. It borders on transatlantic (my favorite accent) but is very Disney princess. She starts as a Disney princess, too! To have a character looking for her true love wake up, search for him, and ultimately sacrifice her chance at having him is *mwah* beautiful. True love isn't real! She directly confronts this, and a member of her party is living proof of it. She has to see the prince who came to save her, and upon meeting him, she realizes how fucked the idea is. He kisses her once and that's all? She doesn't know him, she doesn't love him. How can she live happily ever after with him? Her story is about having things happen to her, but she wrenches the pen from the authors' hands and writes her fucking own! Once upon a time, there was a princess who tried speed dating!

Favorite Intrepid Heroes Characters:
Now that I have finished watching all of the Dimension 20 campaigns (currently running one notwithstanding, obviously), I want to talk about my favorite characters played by the Intrepid Heroes!
Emily Axford:
Okay, listen, Emily is a very talented player who knows how to make a character work, but this was the easiest call for me. I am in love with Unsleeping City's Sofia Bicicleta Lee, she is one of my favorite PCs overall.
The badass martial arts wife of the ultimate wife guy, whose best friend is a talking rat. Plus, she looks like Fran Drescher and I mean, c'mon, I'm just a lesbian born in the early 90s. How could I not.
I'm afraid I don't have a 'close' second for Emily, because all her characters are great and close together, but Sofia shoots out for me.
Lou Wilson:
It's kind of funny how Lou and Emily are inherently linked for me in this, because until I watched ACoFaF, I thought I'd be putting Unsleeping City's Kingston Brown down here.
However, absolutely everything A Court of Fey and Flowers' Squak Airavis has going on is so utterly impeccable. He is such a queer mess, it's amazing. (And it's linked to Emily, because something very important about him is his dynamic with his dear cousin Chirp.)
Zac Oyama:
I'm glad that ACoFaF made me pick Squak for Lou, because otherwise, this would feel like just a list of Unsleeping City characters, because for Zac, it's so very clearly and definitely Ricky Matsui.
The ultimate himbo. The courageous firefighter with his good boy puppy. Absolute wife guy even though he takes too damn long to figure that getting-married-part out. I love Ricky so, so, so much.
Though, second place shout-out to Colin Provolone from Ravening War, that lil cheese knight was so much fun to enjoy and he had so much tension, it was incredible.
Brian Murphy:
My favorite Fantasy High PC - Riz 'The Ball' Gukgak, hands down. That wanna be detective boy is too precious, plus, as an ace I was so, so, so hyped and excited about the rep in him.
Second place shout-out, once more, to Unsleeping City and... surprisingly, to Cody Walsh. I love Kugrash a whole lot, but there was something utterly hilarious to Cody.
Siobhan Thompson:
Hers was my favorite character on A Starstruck Odyssey - I love Riva. They were also such a refreshing flavor for Siobhan, honestly? They were utterly precious and adorable and sweet.
Second place... okay, look, it's Unsleeping City again, yeah. But out of the two characters she played, I actually loved Iga Lisowski more. The Polish mom who guards the dragon. Amazing character pitch, honestly.
Ally Beardsley:
Actually genuinely the hardest choice because Ally is amazing at creating characters. But as a lesbian with a certain type, I am obliged to say A Starstruck Odyssey's Margaret Encino. A hot lady with a purpose and a load of money. When they started calling her Mommy? Oh boy fans self. It was also so much fun to see a character who didn't really do combat but actually got so much done with business calls. Competence is sexy, y'all.
Second place goes to Lars Vandenchomp from Mice and Murder though. Love me a loyal himbo and they were such a good puppy? Amazing.

akdjflasdjl dimension 20
have now watched all of the dimension 20 campaigns with the og 6 cast... will now rank according to my personal opinions and also with the knowledge in every campaign i cried and laughed hysterically at least once. no direct spoilers.
5. fantasy high: sophomore year. this is probably the hardest i've laughed at a campaign, but the live aspect of it made it harder for me to watch personally. while there were so many good connections, things just felt a little more rambly and sprawling than the other campaigns. that being said, hoot growl, i will protect ragh and his mom with my life, and im always a little shrimp 4. the unsleeping city, chapter ii. this one gets on top of sophomore year purely because of the adoration i have for the characters and recency bias, though i can easily see this one and fantasy high going back and forth depending on the day. this has the same problems as sophomore year in terms of i feel like they kept in a lot of the little nuances of actual play and it gave it more of a halting and less smooth feel. but... mommy and daddy crew ftw. cody walsh and iga really shine as new PCs. 3. a crown of candy. i appreciated the brutality and the story of this campaign, and the characters were awesome (shoutout to siobhan, ally, and emily for creating some of the most well-rounded characters that broke my heart and made me grin equally). however, this one gets docked because i probably won't rewatched. what an emotional rollercoaster (can also see this one dropping as it won't be getting the rewatch as soon). 2. fantasy high. this one WILL be getting the rewatch soon because when going through highlights there are just SO many delightful moments as these characters start coming into their own. most of all, as far as a high school setting, this campaign stayed so true to it and the interpersonal relationships and interactions made it so beautiful. shoutout to episode 2. 1. the unsleeping city. these characters are probably my favorite PCs, NPCs, and setting. you can just tell the love that brennan has for New York, for his players, and for the story. it all is woven together so sweetly, and the vox phantasma/populi parallels throughout...... GOD so good. i love you, rat jesus and kingston brown is my dad.

mass effect and unsleeping city for the meme!
Give me a fandom and I’ll tell you:
mass effect:
My favorite parent-child relationship: hang which parent isn’t terrible in mass effect. does andromeda count?? because Drack is best parent. uhhh if we’re just going original trilogy which I assume so then Spacer!Shep and their mom who you can call twice and get an email from (scolding you for not telling them you were alive lol) and I just thought those were really sweet moments.
My favorite sibling relationship: Miranda and Oriana, I loved that loyalty mission and the little emails you get with them and then in ME3 how Miranda is looking for her and how much they came to care about each other. (if this was Andromeda...Vetra and her sis tied with the Ryder twins, Andromeda did family a lot and I liked that)
My favorite family relationship (other): Ashley and her sisters, which I know you only get to see one of them in ME3 but it’s so clear how much she cares about them and is trying to look out for them
My favorite friendship between two people: Wrex and Tali, you know why
My favorite friendship between a group: just the crew in general, especially in ME3 when it’s all built up and then the citadel DLC just cements it so well
My favorite mentorship: Anderson and Shep, hands down
My favorite rivalry: Jack and Miranda
My favorite hatred/antipathy: Everyone in ME3 hating Kai Leng, even Javik hates that dude more than the reapers in that one conversation, it’s just very funny
My favorite potential relationship between characters who never talk in canon: hm, I just think it’s a shame in ME2 how the crew doesn’t have conversations so like I never got to see the interaction between Jack and Thane for instance or Legion and Miranda let’s say. and because those two never make it to the Citadel DLC then I really never get interactions for them anyone else much and I think that’s too bad. I wanted more of the ME2 crew talking.
unsleeping city
My favorite parent-child relationship: Iga and her kids are really sweet, god guys please save Iga
My favorite sibling relationship: do any of them have siblings? I’m blanking on that but I guess uh, Wally and his brother, they were fun in season one
My favorite family relationship (other): Kingston’s family in general, I just think they’re neat
My favorite friendship between two people: Kingston and Pete, I love how much they’ve grown into their roles side by side now and just hang out to talk about protecting the city in different ways. also this season Pete and Sophia is very good.
My favorite friendship between a group: the team up of Ricky, Pete, Cody, and Sophia. absolute fucking disasters.
My favorite mentorship: Pete and Cody this season, cause I guess technically that counts lmao
My favorite rivalry: there’s no real huge one that stands out to me for it
My favorite hatred/antipathy: everyone vs true clowns, lmao no that’s not like a full hatred or anything uhhh I can’t think of one
My favorite potential relationship between characters who never talk in canon: I mean now that Rowan’s met Cody I can cross that off and even Kugs met the new people so that doesn’t work, see the problem is everyone’s like at least shown up and met other people. I guess Iga and Rowan is the only option left here. let Siobhan just talk to herself.
