Blinkie.World preview!

Here is a preview of Blinkie.world, my blinkie collecton site! The goal here is to collect every blinkie on earth (but only if they're free to use, and can be credited). They're all sorted into these color pages, and also sorted into tons of sub categories on other pages (like food, animals, holidays, etc etc). This is what some of the color pages look like now! Once I have at least 300 blinkies in each color, then I'll consider the site full enough to go live! I'm aiming to get it online by Art Fight (aka by July this year).

Do note that this isn't actually an accurate representation of how many I have. I have thousands more than this! I just have to code them all in. It's not as quick as just an image tag and a link, because it also needs to be named, linked to it's source, tagged so I know what categories they're in, have a link to a screenshot that proves who the creator is and their terms (in case the credit link dies one day), have alt text, and have hover text which says the creator and a description of what the blinkie says! So, it's not like this:

And that's for every blinkie! You can probably see how this is so time consuming, but I think it's worth it. I've never seen a blinkie collection with 6,000+ blinkies, much less every single one credited, and even less sorted into dozens of categories! It's like I have a blinkie for everything, while also knowing the creator of each, and being able to easily search for a specific one via the sorting system! It's especially good for helping others find blinkies, and helping people get the sources for blinkies they already have! It's also great for finding blinkies to use for your ocs (which is my initial reason for doing this).

I'm very excited about this. I really think this could be a very fun resource for people, and that aside, I just really like having so many in my possession. I love to see them. I even have blinkies that I've downloaded before they were deleted off the internet! That's very exciting to me. I have blinkies that are straight up lost media, and I'm happy to be able to preserve them.

Of course as I said, it's going to take forever to add them all, but I'm chipping away at it. I shall not be stopped! Also, if you want a blinkie in any of these screenshots above, just let me know! I'll get it and it's source for you, easy peasy! I'll post more screenshots as significant progress is made, but for now, it's back to downloading blinkies!

Facts about Rolan you might have missed, while you were busy saving the world

Spoilers for Baldur’s Gate 3 below!

Here’s a collection of some Rolan facts you may have missed during your playthrough. (These are all from memory, so I will edit this later with sources and exact quotes.)

He is not related by blood to Cal and Lia - You can find this information by speaking with his corpse. All three of them consider each other family, but Rolan seems to hold some insecurities about his position with his siblings. In the same conversation, he mentions having “no one” when asked if he has family and that he identifies as “Rolan, just Rolan” - potentially implying that he’s been abandoned or rejected by his blood family, if they’re alive.

Cal considers Rolan an older brother - If Rolan dies during his rescue attempt in Act 2, Cal confesses that Rolan is his “older brother” and “the person he looks up to the most”.

Rolan loves organizing things - He has overhead dialogue with his siblings where he jokes about wanting an organized, color-coded sock drawer.

You can try to convince Rolan to leave his siblings behind at the grove - Try to convince him to leave Lia behind, and he will admit she’s a pain sometimes, but he could never leave her, not even for his prestigious apprenticeship.

Rolan’s diary changes depending on if his siblings live or die - Self-explanatory. He obviously becomes much more depressed and angry if you fail to save his siblings.

Rolan and his siblings have known each other since Cal was at least eight - They have overhead dialogue where Cal mentions that, when he was eight, Rolan once conjured a cat for him, only for him to find out it was made of fire.

It’s implied that Rolan, Cal, and Lia share a mother figure - If Lia dies, Cal has dialogue with Rolan about throwing a party in memorial for her, “like [they] did for mum”.

Rolan, Cal, and Lia have unique dialogue depending on which of them die - This is self-explanatory, but you can see most of the scenes here. He also appears to have unique dialogue coded in act 3 depending on if he’s angry with you or not (if you disrespected Cal and Lia’s memories by calling them Carl and Liam), but I haven’t been able to trigger it yet.

Lorroakan hates to admit it, but Rolan is more powerful than him - Speak with Lorroakan’s corpse after killing him and having Rolan side with you. He will begrudgingly admit that his apprentice is more powerful than him. Side note, it can be implied that Lorroakan never calls Rolan by his name, as he defaults to “tiefling” or “boy” in their few interactions.

If Rolan has a high enough initiative in the Lorroakan fight, he will use Thunderwave to shove Lorroakan off the tower. Peak revenge.

Some of Rolan’s spells have his name in front of them (Rolan’s Thunderwave, Rolan’s Mage Armor) - Some people have headcannoned this as meaning he had to learn magic by himself, therefore being a Sorcerer. Considering his clothes are a unique color combination for the Sorcerer robes, it raises more than a few questions

Rolan always carries Lorroakan’s letter on him - This one always makes me so sad, pointed out by @sadwizardlover. Throughout the game, the one thing Rolan always carries on his person is the written response from Lorroakan to his letter, posted below.

shen yuan, luo binghe and shen jiu the most explosive trio to ever trio i fear (there are two duos in these trio and hint hint both of them feature sy lol)

also this is basically fanart for Shen Yuan of No Relation on ao3 by Gemi bc i'm binge reading/listening to it and it's so good!!! the characterisation is so on point it dragged me back into the svsss fandom by my hair. the character study tag 100% deserves its' place there.

i saw a post that said that any svsss fanwork's inaccuracy to history can be attributed to airplane's lazy pidw world-building and. yeah. basically.

i was thinking what would the disciple robes look like to both seem regal to the commoners (as described in 99% xianxia novels) and good to train in and i realized that there shouldn't probably be more than two layers anyways because it isn't even really accurate. also, i like the interpretation that each disciple has a subtly different uniform, but i just can't picture how that would work???? 100% the rich kids and older disciples who can actually earn some money would add accesories to their robes, but for shen yuan and luo binghe, i just couldn't imagine where they'd get anything like that, besides the hair pins ning yingying made/gave them (sry if i mix some shit up, i've read 20 chapters in 2 days okey have mercy). plus, with a world that focuses on social standing as much as pidw/svsss does, i think that the sects would naturally aim to recreate that hierarchy in their own society.

with the example of cang qiong mountain, yue qingyuan would have the highest rank, and (as syonr showed!!!) probably boast the biggest estate on the peak, inheriting all the wealth the previous sect leaders had accumulated. and while from what i understand, being a sect-affilated cultivator means your payment is basically getting fed, clothed and having a roof over your head in the sect instead of idk, coin, yue qingyuan would still have monetary means because of, surprise surprise, inheriting it. so, clothes just on the better side from the other peak lords perhaps

next in the food chain would be the other peak lords, except that we see that even the peaks have different 'rankings'. so, while on the outside each peak lord carries the same authority, shen jiu would have been able to be as he was in canon (MASSIVE side eye btw) and no one would have been really in a place to kick him in the gut and say he was a fucking asshole, for example, besides yue qingyuan. that is, from a purely theoretical stand-point, bc all hierarchical order is sometimes broken but that's besides the pointttt. the point is, they would have freedom to dress however they wish and while i believe the disciple robes remain unchanged since the founding of the sect (bc svsss universe is implied to be a largely unadvancing society, regarding anything besides cultivation), the peak lords most likely don't have one set uniform, besides each peak being color-coded apparently??

there was a post i was inspired by (https://www.tumblr.com/svsssfanonarchive/736782613008809984?source=share) that confirmed that the peaks (or at least three of them, but we don't get much of the others anyways) do in fact have the disciples wear robes of one color. qing jing favors greens and teals (see the post for more details pls pls pls it's so good) BUT i love adding white to my art bc i feel like a fabric this vibrant and light would fit the scholars there. also, white seems like the furthest one could get from the gutter to me, bc while it is the color of mourning, it's also the color of purity and shen jiu would take the chance to put one more barrier between shen qingqiu the peak lord and shen jiu the slave. don't ask why i put shen yuan in better robes; there's no reason other to make him more like a mini shen qingqiu lol

the head disciples could probably get modified uniforms or a layer more, to make them really stand out. and i'm not touching on the hall masters and senior disciples bc NOPE. not my problem for now

was adam lanza a pedophile?

this is a topic of hot debate. personally i don’t believe it add or subtracts much from his case, but nevertheless people love to discuss it. so let’s discuss!

why do people think he’s a pedophile in the first place? from a young age, lanza had a fascination with violence against children. in elementary school, lanza wrote several stories featuring violence against children.

later in life, lanza would write a 35-page essay defending pedophilia as part of his college application. in this essay, lanza postulated that pedophile rights were part of the “liberation of children”, and that children should be able to make decisions as adults would. lanza also stated that he believed an “adult-child relationship” could be “beneficial for both parties”.

lanza would expand on this essay on his youtube channel, CulturalPhilistine, in an 8 part series titled “On pedophiles and children”. the transcripts for these videos can be found here

after lanza’s attack on Sandy Hook, police would find notes and basic sketches of scenes for a play called “Lovebound”, written by lanza, on his hard drive. the play would depict a relationship between a 10-year-old boy and a 30-year-old man.

many users of the forum that lanza was on, Shocked Beyond Belief, seemed to have an impression of him that included him having an attraction to children.

so, was he a pedophile? we have no definitive way of knowing, and there’s an equal amount of evidence suggesting that he wasn’t one. when police searched lanza’s hard drive, they found no sexual content featuring children.

it’s well known that lanza was an odd man all around, so perhaps his fascination with violence against children simply came from his “antinatalism” and general violent thoughts rather than an actual attraction to children. maybe the impression that other SBB users had of him came from his awkward personality.

the biggest question, i think, is does it matter?

an article published by the Connecticut Post puts it best—

Dr. Charles Herrick, the head of psychiatry at Danbury Hospital, said it is difficult with the information released to date to know if Lanza's interest in pedophilia had any influence on his behavior.

"The material related to his obsession with mass shootings is far more compelling about what is driving his behavior," he said.

although pedophilia could be a possible motivator of lanza’s attack on Sandy Hook, his fascination with mass shootings—something which appears to be a trend in a lot of mass shooters—is far more relevant. however, the Connecticut Post’s article offers an explanation on how lanza being a pedophile could’ve motivated him to attack Sandy Hook.

[Dr. Fred] Berlin said one could speculate that Lanza, if he had pedophilia tendencies, could have targeted the elementary school in an attempt to eliminate temptation.

"The idea is that someone who has a strong desire for something and they're forbidden to act upon it, they can be angry at the source of temptation," he said. "It's not unreasonable, given what happened. There must have been a tremendous amount of rage inside of him."

as i stated, there’s no definitive way of knowing whether or not adam lanza was a pedophile. either way, i don’t believe it adds or subtracts much from his case, as it does little to change much about his moral character. i don’t believe there’s any point in arguing about something that only serves to make a tragedy more disturbing.

Y/n paced back and forth in her dressing room, her nerves taking up her complete body. It was her first show in broadway. She knew they were going to be critics watching her every move. It was different from anything she had ever done before. Yes, she had acted and she did musical theater when she was in highschool but this was something completely different. This wasn’t a school production, this was an actual professional thing that could affect her career. She stopped in front of her dressing room mirror forcing a smile. It was her opening night and sadly none of her close friends were able to show up, different countries or schedules made it hard for them to show up, which she completely understood. But maybe a familiar face in the crowd could ease her nerves. A soft knock on the door stopped her train of thought. She quickly turned her head toward the door watching the assistant manager peak her head through. 

“Hi Y/n! Sorry for interrupting, You have a visitor that wanted to see you before the show started. Since you didn’t specifically put anyone in your visitor list, I wanted to see if it was okay.” She said quickly, knowing her duties she had a lot of things on her plate and the thing she least needed to worry about was about her visitors. Y/n quickly shook her head, not even asking who the “surprise visitor" was to cut their conversation short. She quickly left and a few seconds later a familiar face smiled shyly your way. Your eyes wandered over his body failing on the red flowers he was gripping tightly. 

“Oscar, what are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be in Australia?” She asked furrowing her eyebrows confused as she didn’t want to get closer to him afraid that he was an act of her imagination. 

“I couldn’t miss your special day, Y/n. I know we aren’t together anymore but you were always by my side in my important days. Even my less important ones. I wanted to support you, I know how important this is for you. So I wanted to see you on your first ever broadway show but if you want, I can leave.” Oscar replied while extending the flowers as you pulled him closely into a bone crushing hug.

Caleb Character Analysis part 1: The Ever Experiments

(This is mostly lifted from a video I posted on tiktok, with some slight changes/clarifications)

The first and most important thing to keep in mind here is that, according to his anecdote 'Pathless Realm', Caleb has suffered from dissociative amnesia throughout his life. I'm obviously not a psychologist, but based on some light research this basically seems to mean that he has mentally blocked out a lot of the traumatic memories of what happened during the experiments, so while he is definitely aware of them he doesn't remember exactly what happened.

This isn't the same as MC, who loses all or most of her memories every time she is killed and resurrected, but it's worth noting they both have issues with their memories & remembering the details of their trauma, and neither can give us the full picture of what happened in their childhoods.

We can also make note that Caleb was recorded to be 9-10 years old while the experiments were happening. This adds an interesting layer to the fact that Caleb constantly tries to take blows for MC and endures trauma so that she doesn't have to. Throughout all of this he was barely less of a child than MC was, but because he is the slightest bit older (and also because it seems that Josephine often left her under his care growing up while she was working) he sees himself as responsible for her wellbeing. This, in some sense, causes Caleb to see himself as older and more mature than he actually is. He was forced to become a caretaker/guardian figure and take on a lot of adult responsibilities at a very young age, which is why he's also so averse to showing vulnerability like we see in 'Hidden Waves'. He feels that if he can't be the mature, unwavering "pillar of strength" that he thinks MC needs him to be, he is failing to be good enough to protect the person he loves the most.

Now let's get into the actual contents of the experiments. We already know what happened to MC from World Underneath, but for anyone needing a refresher she was used for the Aether Core in her heart and her Resonance Evol, and was repeatedly killed so that the researchers could observe her coming back to life with the intention of using her to unlock the secret to immortality. However, things aren't quite as clear cut for Caleb. The only main sources we have are from his first trailer, which says that "They are the optimal weapon for destroying one another" and a few passages from his anecdote, such as:

"He knows he's always been good at destroying delicate things. The people behind the observation window say that the test subject will become a force comparable to a black hole given time. Not even light could escape it."

From these sources we can gather that Caleb was also used for his Evol with the aim of creating black holes (something we know he is able to do as of 'Homecoming Wings') and that he and MC were made to be able to counter each other, likely as a safeguard. Since they were both extremely powerful, the idea of them being optimal for destroying each other perhaps suggests that they were designed so that if MC's power became too dangerous Caleb could be used to destroy her and vice versa.

We can also gather that Caleb was labelled/labels himself as inherently destructive and dangerous. This seems to have had a long term effect on his self image, as the line from his anecdote establishes that this is something "he knows" and believes to be true, affecting the way that he sees himself especially in comparison to MC. I have a video going slightly more into this on my tiktok page, but essentially Caleb seems to see himself as inherently destructive and bad, while MC is an embodiment of goodness and warmth: the "black hole" that even light can't escape VS the "Unicorn" that brings eternal life. This is potentially why he takes on the role of protecting MC so intensely, as he thinks he deserves the suffering more than she does and is willing to take abuse on her behalf to protect her.

It becomes even more interesting if we consider the religious themes of their storyline with all the references to Adam & Eve, paradise and sin. Caleb views himself as inherently "sinful", just like the original sin described in the Bible that all humans are born with because of Adam & Eve. The only way to cleanse oneself of original sin is to submit to God, the embodiment of goodness and purity, and so Caleb, in a way, submits himself to MC. We have seen how highly he thinks of her, as he frequently describes her as "the best of the best", says that he thinks the world doesn't deserve her, and on multiple occasions comments that he thinks that anything that stands against her shouldn't exist or should disappear.

In short Caleb doesn't just love MC, he reveres her in a way that borders on religious and is willing to devote himself entirely to her service. That's why even from a young age he has taken on the role of protecting & serving MC, giving her almost anything she asks for, doing almost anything she wants, and making sure that no matter what she always feels like she is safe and happy and that he will always be there for her. I think he feels that by doing this, he is atoning for his "original sin" of simply existing as himself. He feels that if he can adequately "serve" MC, if someone as good and pure and warm as her can love or even just approve of him, it can make up for all of his feelings of guilt and sin and destructiveness. She is his salvation.

This is already a lot on his shoulders, but if we go back to the experiments I think there is one more thing at the source of Caleb's guilt, one big example of his destructiveness that serves as the main reason he sees himself the way he does: the Chronorift Catastrophe.

As we've already established, Caleb's Evol is capable of creating black holes/wormholes, so it's not unreasonable to think that he could have been used to open the Deepspace Tunnel (intentionally or not). However this would take a lot of power, more than I think a 9 year old boy would be able to achieve, unless we consider the fact that MC may have used Resonance to boost his power to the necessary level (and likely killing herself in the process). This then is their shared sin, like the sin shared between Adam & Eve when they both bit the apple, and it's one that neither seems to remember due to their respective memory loss issues. If this is the case, it gives us yet another reason for Caleb's inherent feelings of guilt: whether he knows it or not, he was directly responsible for the event that almost destroyed humanity and caused MC, the person he cherishes most, some of her deepest lasting traumas. It's yet another thing he feels the need to make up for by protecting her.

It's also how they both manage to escape the labs before later reuniting at the shelter (although I have seen speculation that the "shelter" actually was the experiment facility and that Caleb is lying to MC about it, but I'm not sure whether I agree with this based on what we've seen). When they do reunite MC doesn't remember who Caleb is, marking just one of many times that he has to reintroduce himself to her. This is another one of the "duties" he takes on for her, promising to always be there to remind her who they both are and swearing to be by her side forever. I think this is another reason that Caleb is so obsessed with having MC by his side: not just because that's what he promised her, but because he's afraid that if he's not there to remind her who he is she might one day forget him forever.

He also chooses never to remind MC of what happened to them during the experiments, or at least what he remembers of it himself. The reasoning of this is obvious, Caleb doesn't want her to be upset or in any way traumatised by it, so if there's a way to let her forget all about it he'll let her. However, I think it's significant that from a young age he chooses to take on this burden by himself for the both of them, as this will become a running them as I cover more of his cards & storylines.

now that I have had the time to actually think and write out my feelings, here's what i stated earlier except worded better because every time i read my original post about the situation, it doesn't get my message across.

Despite me only having one (now deleted) work dedicated to that piece of undeserving shit, Moon Taeil, I will no longer be writing for nct, period. [ referring to ao3 and ncteez]

One reason being that as much as I enjoyed writing for NCT and as much as I adore(d) the members, I cannot realistically know who was or was not aware of what Taeil was doing. I am not saying that they were well aware and swept it under the rug, I am simply stating that as much as I hope they didn't know, I am no longer comfortable as a fan because it is unlikely that we will ever be able to do anything more than speculate. My second reason being that I have grown a lot as a person and have drifted from NCT in the past half year. The news we all came online to today was something that ultimately made me stop clinging. 

Additionally, i want to remind you all that I will never judge you for continuing to support NCT, but I will judge you if you continue to support Taeil.

I sincerely hope the victims who were hurt by him are not only finding joy in his downfall, but healing. It's not easy to heal from such a thing, as so many of us have experienced it ourselves, but I do hope that seeing justice will make those wounds a little easier to handle. And if you're a fan, or biased Taeil previously, remember that you should not feel guilty or bad for loving him before this. It was his job to be lovable and to be seen in his best light. He manipulated many people but let's hope that he can no longer do that.

and just to add, i see people on twitter saying "i heard from somewhere blah blah blah" and "my friend said she saw taeil do this" etc. do not take these things random fans are saying and treat them as truth. we are well aware that taeil has done something awful but I want to make it very clear that with each new allegation that ends up being false, people may begin to question and downplay the whole situation. I'm talking "well this was proved false so clearly he's innocent with the other things too!" etc. DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING IF THEY DO NOT POST SOURCES FROM LEGITAMATE PLACES. I know we are all angry and hurt, but get your information from trusted sources, not the person with a haechan pfp on twitter trying to express their anger by spreading information that could, ultimately, take awareness away from the real victims and/or make people second guess the investigation as a whole.

So it is canon that he has low blood pressure (or hypotension), and I think this gets in his way in fights when he's pushing himself past his limit. Extreme and sudden blood lose can trigger symptoms of hypotension, which in his case I think are blurred/fading vision, dizziness, fatigue and fainting. A good example of him experiencing all of these is his fight against Hanami. After finding out that he has low blood pressure and reading about it, this explains his lightheadedness and him passing out during the fight. Maybe the source of his hypertension is his CT in the first place, who knows.

first off, huge plug for catchingteez on youtube's excellent vocal analyses of yeosang. a lot of what i have to say about him musically is borrowed from their observations.

oh, the plight of lower voice parts in an ensemble. as a choir alto, i am well-accustomed to the experience of being relegated to singing backup/harmony like 80% of the time. i ALSO understand that the lower voice parts are soooo important for giving the choir its full, rich sound and if we WEREN'T there you'd fucking know, and we are special and amazing and god's bravest soldiers and our parts are the hardest and our tits are huge and--anyways. (what's the definition of an alto? -a soprano who can sightread ok i'll shut up). and ALSO, when lower parts DO get given the melody (approximately once every 47 business days) it's a fucking huge moment. it'll blow your tits clean off. and everyone clapped.

all this to say, not that it's necessarily right that yeo has been stuck in the backup parts of so much of ateez's repertoire (though if you are not personally involved in the production side of any group, you probably don't have enough information to know why lines are distributed the way they are and i think people should exercise caution before crying mistreatment. maybe some people just wanna dance.), but just because he hasn't always had the most prominent parts doesn't mean he's superfluous or treated that way.

i have been trying to save the in-depth vocal analyses for another post(s) but since part of yeo's core mythos among fans has been "guy who doesn't get lines" i want to do a little bit more here than i have elsewhere.

the tricky thing about idols debuting at 18 (or younger 😱) is that singing voices are usually not completely done changing by that time. voices continue to develop and settle into their true ranges into and sometimes beyond someone's early twenties. in the early days i think yeo's voice was not only untrained but also just had not settled to the point where he would be able to produce the best sound in that part of his range, and also ateez's discography just didn't really have many parts down there either. in general, his voice is quite soft and his intonation pretty dark, so when singing lower notes his voice just did not really have the power to cut through a lot of their heavier backing tracks or stand up against other vocalists with punchier voices. he ended up just getting a few lines in an awkward placement for him and when he does sing lower notes, it's often to double another singer down the octave or fill out group vocals--often to great effect! hear him doubling seonghwa in mist, and in the say my name prechorus. that said he was also always a really important part of atz's sound in all tracks, just not in the flashiest way.

also now that i've learned more about the way the writing team has members audition for who gets what part, i have other guesses as to what was going on, namely just that it may have been an issue of confidence in addition to/because of the other factors.

now part of the reason why the whole The World era is so fucking GOATed in my esteem is that is around when they finally truly started to lean on their bass section! there were some boom boom title tracks that dipped into that before but mostly just to add to the effect of being Loud. but from imo deja vu onward, i feel like the production really started to play with the deeper voices and especially yeosang's, on their own and in contrast with the higher/brighter/lighter vocals for some really cool kinda chiaroscuro effects. this both narratively serves the darker moods of the World era albums and also musically propels the group into a more sophisticated sound that is sooo satisfying.

and it paid off big time for yeo. his "five star michelin moment" (as described by catchingteez) in the halazia prechorus, fucking DUNE,

pls listen to the dune chorus while looking at this picture. you won't regret it.

you can tell yeosang really started to come into his own around that time--as did almost everyone else to an extent, but yeo's case is particularly striking and heartwarming--and he's only continued to do more and more cool stuff musically as we've entered the golden hour era. i'm super looking forward to doing more vocal and musical analysis so i can really dig into these topics more. this also happened with other members to less dramatic degrees, but this is a post about ys so shhhh. he's just really in his element right now and i'm living for it.

let's talk about DANCING now. yeosang is just mesmerizing to watch perform. whenever he is centered i find myself so compelled to watch, just can't look away, and he often steals the show even from the background tbh. so many of my absolute favorite dance moves among ateez's repertoire involve yeosang in some way (immediately coming to mind include the smn prechoruses, his center part in deja vu, halazia ofc, everything about cyberpunk, the way he kills the bouncy limbo move, the shuffle from iomt, etc). and his choreo always matches his vocals (when he has them 🥲) extremely well? next time you watch ateez perform anything, PLEASE pay attention to yeosang, wherever on stage he may be!

finally, any discussion of kang yeosang cannot go without a mention of how he is subtly the funniest member of ateez. there is one (1) other member who is a serious contender for the title but the others try but simply can't compete. it's the quiet ones as they say. his comedic timing is unparalleled and he has this deadpan way of delivering lines that is SO FUCKING FUNNY (skip to around 1:00 in that video to see a great example). i love when he narrates vlogs. you can tell he's really smart even though he plays up being a space case. member who gets teased a lot? no. the other members are fortunate to be permitted to tease him. anyways he's such an entertaining addition to side content. i also think he is maybe the member i would best get along with irl. overall he seems pretty quiet and low-drama (i keep hearing stuff abt relationship drama but idk man i think the dude's just vibing)

South Asian and Hindu Influences in ATLA (Part 3)

disclaimer: i was raised culturally and religiously hindu, and though i've tried to do my research for this post and pair it with my own cultural knowledge, i'm not an expert on hinduism by any means. should i mess up, please let me know.

please also be aware that many of the concepts discussed in this post overlap heavily with religions such as buddhism and jainism, which might have different interpretations and representations. as i'm not from those religions or cultures, i don't want to speak on them, but if anyone with that knowledge wishes to add on, please feel free.

Avatar Day

katara, sokka and aang run across a village that despises the avatar and hold a yearly celebration burning giant effigies of past avatars. this seems to be inspired by the hindu festival of Vijayadashami, a celebration that marks the victory of the hero Rama over the demon Ravana in the epic Ramayana. effigies of Ravana, and other demons mentioned in the Ramayana, are built and set alight to celebrate their defeat and the triumph of good over evil.

this idea of destroying and condemning evil figures through consigning them to the flames is mirrored in the episode, though of course there is a dramatic irony in said evil figure being the avatar - a being of great power and divinity in the hindu tradition.

Ember Island jewelry

though the clothes that zuko, azula, ty lee and mai wear on ember island are predominantly taken from southeast asian countries like thailand and cambodia, there is some desi influence in the jewelry they wear - particularly azula's.

though perhaps not as ornate as desi jewelry usually is, the shape and style of azula's necklace is very similar to that of necklaces worn in south asia, especially at weddings. although it appears simple, it's likely that the necklace is made of pure gold, reflecting azula's status and wealth as princess of the fire nation.

the armband azula wears is also reminiscent of the bajuband, an armcuff worn around the biceps for religious festivities, or special occasions like weddings and parties.

again, you'll note that the version azula wears in the show is a lot more stripped down than typical indian jewelry would be, lacking the bejewelled, ornate designs that characterize desi ornaments.

i like to think this is azula's attempt at being an "average" teenager - dressing more simply (or so she thinks) to blend in with the others at the party. of course, the typical fire nation teenage girl probably wouldn't be wearing gold at all, let alone so much of it, and in fact most of the kids at the party seem to be wearing plain jewelry that look more like leather cords. it's a nice visual touch to confirm what the episode shows us: that azula isn't and doesn't know how to be a normal teenage girl, even when she tries.

Combustion Bending

the concept of combustion bending comes from the third eye of Shiva, one of the three gods in the Trimurti. where his counterparts Brahma and Vishnu are called the Creator and the Preserver respectively, Shiva is known as the Destroyer.

he is usually depicted with a crescent moon on his head, a serpent coiled about his neck, and most famously, his third eye in the centre of his forehead. the third eye is meant to represent shiva's innate power, knowledge and spiritual enlightenment, and is said to be able to see through any illusion or lie to reveal the truth. once opened, it releases a powerful blast of fire or energy (sources differ) that will annihilate any evil it detects.

the most famous myth associated with the opening of the third eye is that of Shiva and Kamadeva, the god of love and passion. according to the legend, Kamadeva tried to make Shiva fall for the goddess Parvati by shooting him with an arrow meant to arouse desire (yeah the hindus had cupid too) but Shiva saw through the trick and, in a fit of fury, reduced Kamadeva to ashes with his third eye.

the inextricable interlinking of destruction with falsehood and pretence reveals the true meaning of the third eye: it is not a tool for meaningless destruction, but a powerful spiritual force for truth, clarity and wisdom.

so naturally it makes perfect sense for the show to stick it on a no-name assassin with no other signifying characteristics or personality traits besides mindless killing. that definitely treats this important cultural and religious symbol with the respect it deserves!

speaking genuinely, the way atla depicts combustion bending goes against everything the third eye is actually meant to symbolise. Shiva didn't indiscriminately open his eye any time he was pissed off or wanted to kill someone; in fact, there are only three, maybe four instances of its use noted in legend, the most famous of which i have discussed above. the fact that the third eye was used so sparingly is testament to its incredible power - power that was meant to be wielded carefully and only when necessary.

for the creators to take this incredibly significant, symbolic aspect of hindu iconography and reduce it to nothing more than a "cool" bending tactic, stripping away all its actual spiritual meaning to turn it into a weapon of brute, random violence is... honestly more disrespectful than i can put into words.

Aang's Moral Dilemma

the scene where Aang goes to his past lives for advice on ozai has been confirmed by the creators to be inspired by the scripture of the Bhagavad Gita. this moment draws from a scene between Arjuna and the deity Krishna in the epic of the Mahabharata, which depicts the war for succession between two warring familial factions - the Kauravas and Pandavas.

in the referenced scene, Arjuna, one of the five Pandava brothers, experiences a moment of moral crisis before the Kurukshetra War. torn between his duty as a soldier and his lingering love for his family on the opposing side, he refuses to fight in the battle as he cannot bear the thought of inflicting violence upon those he once loved. Krishna, the Avatar of Lord Vishnu, and Arjuna's charioteer, rebukes Arjuna and tells him that his priority must always, first and foremost, be his dharma (duty). Krishna also explains that death is merely a release: it is not the physical body that matters, but the soul, and so Arjuna is not truly harming those he loved. heartened by this, Arjuna commences the battle with renewed commitment.

the influence here on aang's conversation with the past avatars is clear. like Arjuna, aang is caught between his personal desires and his duty; like Krishna, kyoshi, roku and kuruk advise him to put his desires second to his responsibility as the avatar. where the show differs is that aang is able to fulfil both his desires and his duty, while Arjuna must sublimate his personal wants to the greater good and what is expected of him as a warrior.

this, incidentally, is where i take issue with how the show handles aang's dilemma. from a dharmic perspective, the resolution of this moral conflict fails twofold: not only did aang fail to put his duty (killing ozai) before his own personal desire for non-violence and maintaining the sanctity of his beliefs, but the solution he did choose - energybending - likely caused ozai great spiritual damage, even if it spared him physical harm.

in hindu and dharmic traditions in general, the body is seen as merely a vessel to be discarded. it is the soul that persists through lifetimes, and the quality of one's spiritual actions that determine their next life. throughout the show, bending has always been inextricably linked with spirituality, and so the argument could well be made that - in accordance with dharmic beliefs - stripping ozai of his bending is much more cruel and harmful than merely killing him. for the writers to present energybending as a “humane” or “nonviolent” option that maintains aang’s moral purity is a fundamental misunderstanding of the basic tenets of hinduism and buddhism, both of which view the the non-material or spiritual self as more important than the physical body it inhabits.

ironically then, it is Arjuna who both fulfills his duty and protects his opponents from real harm, while aang accomplishes neither task. had the show stayed true to the moral conflict it was co-opting from the Gita, the real resolution would have been for aang to accept his dharma as a kshatriya (warrior) and do his duty, no matter the personal cost or sacrifice.

like with combustion bending, regrettably this is yet another instance of the writers being happy to cherry-pick "cool" concepts and ideas from hindu beliefs and myths, but failing to understand the true meaning of the lessons they were trying to impart.

though atla is an incredible show and was a hallmark for asian representation at the time it came out, i wish more people would recognize that it did fall incredibly short in many ways. it’s not too much to ask for desi characters to be more than lazy stereotypes, for important iconography be respected, and for the thought-provoking moral questions raised by scripture as ancient and rich as the Gita to be engaged with meaningfully rather than handwaved away in favour of a flashy, easy ending.

for a show that based so many of its fundamental concepts and ideas on hinduism, i think it’s fair to say that atla could and should have done better by the culture and religion to which it owed so much.

Imagine that will all come out soon enough), met his band mate in Hawaii. Is it conceivable the song is referencing really just hanging out with his friends as he pleases without all the drama that solos and shippers attach to it? Perhaps the verse about knowing people are disappointed but telling them to just let it go, is actually referencing ARMY?

By using those pictures, I am not reducing that song choice to be ONLY about Jimin, I'm just not choosing to add other connections to my post just because those aren't as interesting to me personally. Yes, I know he went to Hawaii with Tae, and I think I read about his trip with his friend.

However, I think, for JK, at least, Jimin is, just like for me, his main focus. JK and I have that in common. So, my inclination is to see those lyrics in connection to either Jimin or whatever he's feeling at that moment. Because that's definitely a theme with him.

His song choices aren't just random. You're doing the man a grave injustice if you think like that. Whenever he goes live, he curates his playlist. It's his work and his passion to listen to music. Sharing songs with someone you love (us) is a love language we need to acknowledge more of. Way back when casette tapes existed, people used to make mixtapes for their crush with songs that reminded them of that person. The little cover could be decorated with handwritten titles and maybe some doodles..how cute! It was a: 'Listen to this song, the lyrics speak words I dare not say' kind of idea. How romantic anon 😭 and it's just SO JK of him. He's per his own admission, not good with words. His song recommendations, therefore, speak for themselves.

So, after he made it clear that him and Jimin were sitting together as they were posting, he then also made us take note of a bunch of songs. So, connecting his mood to Jimin isn't that strange as they have been, were, and will be together while they're enlisted. And he's not hiding that. He is the one who keeps spilling the proverbial beans. He's showing off 😩!

Given we have finally gotten news regarding the anime what do you think about it being an adaptation of the manga?

I have some mixed opinions since we'll be seeing the same story for the 4th time at this point (game/manga/novel/anime) but there does appear to be some differences with each especially with each unique Yuu. I do think the OBs and fight choreography is best animated over a slice of life show.

I'm not expecting any major changes from the manga if any at all but I'm happy to see it animated at all. I do hope it is successful so that the other books get animated. I feel like we are in a purgatory of early TWST with how often we go back to the earlier books in different mediums.

Gonna be honest with you, I’m kinda numb to getting yet another adaptation of the main story (a story that, mind you, we've already heard ad nauseum). At this point, it really does feel like a never-ending purgatory or time loop where we are forced to relive Heartslabyul over and over and over 😅 Of course, I'm still looking forward to seeing the anime and watching some of the more complicated scenes play out (fights, flashback sequences, playing magift/spelldrive, etc.). However, I think I would have preferred something new...? For example, vignettes, the event stories, etc.

The anime being an adaptation of the manga is... fine? But that means the anime may also have the same issues that I have with the manga. Those would be:

We will never really be able to fully bond with or know Yuu on a deeper level since Yuu is constantly changing between books/seasons. We won't get to see how the Yuu of Heartslabyul interacts with characters in later books, we won't get to see how the Yuu of Octavinelle handled the Heartslabyul and Savanaclaw conflicts, etc. We won't see any of them grow or change as a result of interacting with the NRC cast. This sucks particularly because if you really love a particular Yuu, you know they won’t be sticking around.

Despite the Yuus being designed as foils for the OB boys of each respective arc, no special meaningful interactions come out of it. The reader/viewer is just left to draw the parallels but there is never a moment where Yuu and the OB boy reconcile about their similarities/differences, which would actually justify the frequent changing of the POV character.

Barely any alterations are made from the game's story, since the manga isn't allowed to deviate in significant ways. No matter how different the Yuu is, they cannot ever make a decision or even have dialogue that would actually change the story in interesting ways.

General time constraints (manga arcs are 20 chapters, seasons have a limited number of episodes).

Limited showing/screen time of some characters. Because the adaptation will be of the main story, some characters that make very bad first impressions (hi, book 2 Leona… hi, Sebek without the vignettes…) will maintain those bad first impressions and won’t have a chance to redeem themselves simply because the bonus content (vignettes, event stories, etc.) aren’t adapted. Other characters won’t get as much focus simply because they aren’t the OB boys. The former would mainly be a concern for anime/manga-only fans.

Most of my disappointment comes not from reliving the same story, but that we are reliving the same story with minimal changes. I would enjoy adaptations more if they actually played around with the source material and explored new avenues! It feels like a missed opportunity, you know??

As I said earlier in this post, this is NOT meant to be overly negative; this is healthy skepticism. I'd describe myself as still excited, but not as excited as I would be if the anime were about something else set in the Twst world. Hope that makes sense 🙏

I would also caution readers to take my concerns with a grain of salt; for all we know, maybe the anime will add new scenes or fix some of the issues I pointed out. We should wait until the anime is out to judge its content and quality for ourselves.

I thought I would make a list of possible things to donate to NC and TN if you’d rather donate goods instead of funds.

I would like to note that most stores lost power and a LOT of goods are either sold out or were destroyed for obvious reasons. It’s a disaster in the stores, and my area wasn’t hit as hard as others. Most people don’t have the means to get to a store or, even if they could, the store will likely be out of what they need. Goods are being air dropped and distributed within these places. (This is not to say that financial donations are not needed. BOTH are necessary.)

Here’s a list of needed donations;

Dry, shelf stable, ready to eat foods (crackers, bread, jams, fruits, vegetables, snack foods; anything will be helpful) Canned goods are a maybe. Pull tab is best as a lot of people don’t have manual can openers or know how to use one.

Water. Bottled water. Jugs. Anything. Water is absolutely VITAL right now as we have a shortage of clean water and plenty of broken water lines

Power banks, while they might not be able to charge them at home, many community places such as churches are offering for people to charge their devices. This can help keep them in touch with help and loved ones longer.

Children activities (coloring books and crayons/pencils, non electronic toys, etc) Many kids are left without their devices and need things to help them through these terrifying times.

Pet foods of any kind

Gasoline canisters; for those that have access to getting more gasoline and powering generators

Charcoal and matches; this can help with making sure people are able to cook and have a heat source

Toiletries; toilet paper, personal hygiene goods, wet wipes, pads and tampons

Clothing and towels (please keep in mind sizes in XL and higher. These sizes can be scarce even without disaster)

Flashlights and batteries

Newborn needs (formula, diapers, wipes, jarred baby foods)

Chrollo Relationship/Romantic Headcanons

Now for these headcanons, this is where my opinion might really differ from the rest of you guys. Of course this isn’t all but just some of my favorites. I will be putting a clear NSFW warning for when I start to talk about him in bed. 🔞

I do want to add that some of my headcanons would change depending on his partner. If they’re a Nen-user or not, exactly what their ability is, if they’re in the Phantom Troupe, and how long he’s known them, etc. These are just as neutral as possible haha. Even some of what I say here contradicts how I’ve written him in certain ships because I knew exactly how he would act for those specific love interests.

✥ Right of the bat, Chrollo is bi-romantic, having very little preference of gender when it comes to his s/o. And sexuality wise, he’s definitely on the demisexual spectrum.

✥ Chrollo never really planned on being in a long term relationship or ever settling down with someone when he created the Phantom Troupe. It was just another aspect of life he was prepared to sacrifice. So giving a genuine relationship a shot he’d have to really love the other person.

✥ It would take forever for Chrollo to actually recognize he was feeling romantic attraction to another person as the entire thing is foreign to him.

✥ This man’s charisma goes out the drain when trying to flirt with someone he’s genuinely interested it. Tapping his fingers as a stim while he awkwardly flirts. It’s painfully adorable.

✥ Before making things official, he may do extensive research on his s/o. Background checks, verifying friends and family members, overall borderline stalking. It’s a safety measure. He doesn’t want to risk falling for someone who works for an opposing group or who might betray him.

✥ In a relationship, his s/o would be a source of comfort, especially if the relationship is long term. He’ll relax in their arms after a heist or cuddle up to them when he has a nightmare.

✥ I said in my last post but I’ll say it again here. Chrollo is a little spoon!

✥ It’s not too often Chrollo will verbally tell someone he loves them, his main ways of showing affection are quality time, and gift giving. And for his special someone, he wouldn’t just give them random things willy-nilly, he’d put thought behind each one. Say his partner mentions needing new shoes because their current ones are really worn out. You bet next time Chrollo sees them he’s bringing two pairs of brand new shoes.

✥ He loves to be able to lay his head in his s/o’s lap and have them play with his hair while he reads. He might even purr if given the right setting.

✥ Chrollo can be touch avoidant in general. If anyone touches him and he hasn’t given that person mental permission he will move away, shudder even. So if he’s actually allowing another in his space it really is a sign of fondness.

✥ This man definitely takes notes from romance novels he’s read when it comes to dates with someone he’s head over heels for. It can be cheesy.

✥ Chrollo isn’t a chef by any means but on occasion he’ll attempt to cook for his s/o when staying in. Might as well put some of his cook books to use after all.

✥ The times Chrollo is with his partner, things can be quite pleasant. However he can still be emotionally distant. He often wonders what he did to deserve all of this. To be able to love and be loved. It’s a mental battle he might struggle with quite often in the relationship and he wouldn’t be too open to communicating that, leaving his s/o confused. Just some general reassurance could go a long ways.

✥ I feel like a lot of people go for the idea that he’d like others with similar interests or are like him in general, and I could see potential in that mindset however I much prefer the “opposites attract” trope. I think Chrollo might have a bigger interest in someone different than him who can really show a different perspective on certain things. Or even test his mindset and show him new interests.

✥ He’s protective of his s/o, knowing with the life he has, anyone might try to hurt them to get to him so Chrollo wouldn’t be one to really “show off” his partner unfortunately. They relationship could be pretty private.

✥ Assuming his s/o isn’t in the Troupe, Chrollo may ghost them while he’s away on the job. He’ll let them know he’s working, but no calls or texts while he’s away. He won’t even give a location. He wants to keep his personal life separate and doesn’t want to risk revealing to an enemy his relationship or possibly get distracted.

✥ Before the relationship, Chrollo didn’t really like sex (as I mentioned him being demi), he viewed the act as a chore used on jobs to get information and didn’t find it all that gratifying.

✥ With his s/o, Chrollo much prefers to make love as opposed to casual sex. He likes the intimacy of being with someone he truly loves and not just an act of pleasure.

✥ He prefers bottoming though is open to being a verse. Acting as Boss all the time he really just likes to relax in his personal life so in all honesty it wouldn’t be rare to catch him being a pillow prince in bed.

✥ Chrollo’s not the biggest cock wise, probably just reaching average. He’s uncut being from Meteor City but trust and believe he keeps that shit clean with his pubic hair trimmed.

✥ He’ll almost never out right ask for sex, he’s honestly fine if his partner doesn’t have any interest in the act either. Though if they make a move he’s more than happy for a session.

✥ He’s got VERY sensitive nipples. Give them a little tug with your teeth and he’ll mewl.

✥ Aftercare is always a given between him and his s/o. If Chrollo just got done bottoming, cuddles and praise are a must. He’d especially melt if given a massage.
