I've been wanting to write an August background fic/character study for a couple of years now. It was meant to be a small series of encounters to examine the evolution of his views on women and romance, but I don't have the time or creative energy for that. Luckily, this first 3k scene between him and Carl Johan also makes a good pre-canon one-shot to set us up for S3!

As hard as August tried to rack his brain, he couldn’t think of anything that his mother might have done to cause the upset. He knew his parents had argued a few days ago while he was at school, but they had already made up. Hadn’t they? It had just been the usual pointless tension brought by Louise’s credit card statement. Carl Johan had already given her a new pair of earrings since then, to be worn at Sunday’s fundraising event, so they must’ve made up.

“Well, August,” Carl Johan’s voice said at long last, pulling August back to the present. “It looks as if you’re on your own for most of next week. Apparently, your mother would rather be in Zermatt with her sister than in Stockholm with me or here with you.”

I was at the beach today so here are some bobs burgers beach headcanons

Bob applies LAYERS of sunscreen to himself

It’s pretty gross looking, actually

To the point where even Linda is like “yikes” 😬

It’s fine though because at some point (always sooner than later) Louise WILL dump a pail of water in him

She says it’s for the prank but irl she just thinks that her dad slathered in sunscreen in public is of the utmost embarrassment

Gene and Tina wholeheartedly agree

Gene isn’t allowed to bring his keyboard to the beach anymore

There was an incident

But the family doesn’t talk about it so just drop it, okay?

So yeah

He brings a little radio instead

And Gene just plays the most unhinged shit

Drives Louise crazy (so she says)

Honestly, it bothers Tina even more bcs it makes her senses go brrrrrr in a bad way

she does NOT vibe with the gummy bear song

Gene wears a swim shirt/rash guard

And despite the fact that she hates it, Louise's swimsuit has one of those cute ruffled skirts attached to it

She's tried to cut it off but Linda ALWAYS sews it back on again

Linda brings wine coolers disguised inside her travel thermos (stanley knock off??)

But she has extras in the cooler

Obvi bobby brings his portable grill

his burger of the day is the "Beach Burger"

Just a reg burg except he arranges the sesame seeds into a sand dollar pattern

well, an attempted sand dollar pattern

tbh he gets through one burger bun and gives up

To make up for it he attempted to add fish sauce to the burger meat, but it's okay bcs Gene spit it at him and he got the message

Bob also wears a rash guard btw

Linda is a bikini lady; always red, always high waisted

Tina just sticks with the sexy one piece with the wonky stripe

Louise will always invite her friends along

and they always end up coming, much to bob's chagrin

Andy and Ollie let her bury them up to their necks in sand

Rudy (who not only wears a rash guard, but it's a long sleeved rash guard) just watches from a distance

He really does not like it when any parent gets him in trouble, let alone bob

Gene tans, he loves it

It's a lifestyle, not a skin colour

Linda is right behind him on that one

Tina spends most of her time collecting shells and cool rocks she finds

One time she found a heart-shaped stone and gave it to Jimmy jr

but he thought she was handing him a skipping stone so he chucked it right back into the water

(Zeke spent the rest of the day trying to find it, but it was gone forever)

Louise loves skipping rocks

but literally only because it means that she can throw rocks at people on purpose and say that she's just practicing

Bob ends up with wicked tan lines

Every time he takes off his shirt, for weeks afterwards Louise screams bloody murder

Louise can't really swim

she can pull off a mean doggy paddle but quite frankly she doesn't like getting her ears wet

Tina is the strongest swimmer of all of them

but even still, she mostly just sinks

Gene just floats

The kids are pretty sure they have never seen bob get in the water

Something that he denies, even though it's true

He can swim

He just chooses not to

Linda doesn't get in the water much anymore but she used to be an avid swimmer

She briefly got back into it during her syncro phase but after she embarrassed herself and her kids so it didn't last too long

but she does like to go to some sort of community centre pool sometimes just to swim a couple laps

Anyway

when Linda's at the beach she, like Gene, spends most of her time tanning

where else do you think he got it from?

The only difference is that she makes Gene put at least a little sunblock on

While Linda herself does not put any on at all and gets horrifically burned

BUT its okay! Her skin eventually peels off into a nice, dark tan

bob is terrified of her getting skin cancer, and honestly, its a valid concern

One Linda brushes off, naturally

Tina and Louise LOVE the feeling of the hot sand on their feet

Louise loves the beach because she can comfortably go shoeless

Gene, however, wears his red sneakers

just without socks

It's linda's, but as if she uses it lolol

It makes him look classy

Jewish Cinderella. tells her dad she loves him as meat loves salt, he thinks she doesn't love him and kicks her out, she ends up marrying the rabbi's son and when her dad shows up to her wedding she has his food prepared without salt. and then her dad's like, this tastes terrible. and she's like, yes because meat loves salt

Settarah:

Settareh lives among her many sisters, being considered an outcast due to the star-shaped birthmark on her cheek. Still,  she is very kind, giving a poor elderly woman most of her money that was to be spent on new clothes for the Prince's party. She is then entranced by a small blue jug that she buys, which secretly grants her wishes, including clothes for the party. When her sisters find out about the jug, they ask it for a way to be rid of her,  and it gives them hair pins which turn Settareh into a dove. Still, she keeps the prince company as a bird until he finds and removes the pins

WAIT YOU HAVE LAB KIDS ;__; TELL ME EVERYTHING

OK OK SO. tysm for the ask and sorry for taking so long to answer this oopsies I got distracted badly. (redesigned a few of the labkids and then wanted to redesign the rest of them and then forgor) also this is gonna be a bit messy on account of it is 2 am woopsies. and also uhhh warning for lotsa body horror type stuff and fucked up science things and also most of it is kind of a metaphor for how the education system fails some kids?

ok so. the Hopkins Demonology Lab is trying to create artificial demons. for... reasons. what demons are, though, is pretty fuckin' weird - they're basically like. things that look like some kind of animal or other on the outside just with red eyes, but have the ability to 'evert' or turn themselves inside out and basically go bodyhorror gore monster mode. this is generally a big risk to the whole "bodily integrity and not dying" thing, so demons are generally regarded as pests because they tend to cause problems and then die about it. the bigger ones can cause more problems and are worse at dying, but in general they're just an inconvenience. the lab is trying to change that. specifically, it's trying to create human demons. although, creating them isn't the hard part- creating ones that don't die is the hard part. because the lab demonkids are humans, they're better at putting their bodies back together, but because they're artificially created, things have a tendency to go wrong anyway...

ok and here are some of the characters:

first the ones I don't got (regular) art of (I have some art of them but it's either gore, body horror, or outdated, and I'll put it under a readmore at the bottom of the post)

Oliver Izolde: formerly a regular human, who volunteered to get experimented on for... some reason. probably so he could pay his rent. he's one of the most successful experiments there. and also a huge bully to a lot of the less successful ones, especially Emery.

August Watkins: another one in Oliver's group. possibly an orphan who joined the experiments because it was better than his current life. they regret this very much now! this is because he learned something that Dr. Hopkins didn't want anyone finding out, and she made sure they're incapable of telling anyone. and then decided to do more experiments on them since it was too much of a risk to keep letting them leave the facility. he's basically incapable of using his demon powers because he is very squeamish and faints instantly on the sight of his own internals.

Miles Landon: not an experiment, she's a lab assistant... but they relate more to the experiments than to their bosses. on account of their bosses are, not the nicest exactly.

ok and now ones I do have art of!

Nashville Hopkins: no one's entirely sure what this guy's deal is. he's in his own experimental group separate from both the former-regular-human ones and the fully artificial ones. some of the other experiments (and Miles) wonder if Nash might be Dr. Hopkins' son, but she maintains plausible deniability about that since he doesn't look like her aside from their hair color, and he needed a last name in order to have an official identity and stuff. and that's because he's actually allowed to be out and about, since his powers are fully under control. (that's because he wears a sort of power restricting collar. he'd sort of explode without it so he don't mind.) he often runs errands for the lab, does Dr. Hopkins' grocery shopping, etc.

Enzo: one of the artificial demon kids. he's like 8 when stuff starts going wrong... he starts struggling to complete his exercises, moving less, etc. the 'doctors' at the lab (they do not have medical degrees) brush this off as him just being lazy, but actually his body is destabilizing. while that's all going down, he's besties with Elodie so they get put in the same containment area together.

Elodie: another artificial demonkid, also about 8. like Enzo, she's starting to destabilize. she's also one of the more relatively successful experiments, and gets pushed to try to strengthen her powers more. this is painful for her and she's stressed all the time, which gets brushed off as her just being angry/defiant.

Emery: one of the more... sort of successful artificial ones. they're 19 and haven't destabilized yet, but they also can't fully evert, only partially (and they have a tendency to make eyes where they really shouldn't, unintentionally.) they're one of Dr. Hopkins' favorites, but are kind of not a fan of this because she thinks they're just too stupid to distrust her like most of the others do. (they're autistic and she's terrible.) they help with the younger experiment kids, basically helping them do their exercises, making sure they eat, helping Miles secretly teach them how to read, etc. they're also 6'4 and built like a brick shithouse so the Doc likes to have them around to... help intimidate auditors or whoever else comes around to pry into her business. not that she needs the help!

after Enzo and Elodie both completely destabilize on the same day, causing serious damage to the facility, Emery loses the last remnants of their trust in the 'doctors', and pretty soon after that they escape the place with Miles' help. (Miles also lies to their bosses and says she don't know what happened.)

they're the true protagonist of RETW! they're a member of Gavin's party, and like him they're a "hero" which means basically wandering do-gooder... they help people out, fix things, etc. in comparison to Gavin who's uh. a demonslayer. things don't go too great there but not in the way you'd think. here's them post-escape. they got a sword almost the size of their self

oh and then some time later this kid joins the party... they're like 10 ish, they have Problems, Emery recognizes them, and they keep changing what they say their name is... sometimes Elodie and sometimes Enzo.

Emery (cursed twink version again) and Dr. Harwell (I didn't mention her in this post oopsies. she's Dr. Hopkins' subordinate, and seemingly meaner than her boss but the bar is a lot higher than she realizes. they sorta have a good cop bad cop dynamic sometimes. also doc harwell has a crush on doc hopkins because I love evil woman yuri. and divorce. doc hopkins is extremely divorced. the divorce is plot relevant. im going on a tangent)
