1973 San Francisco Gay Night Life Culture

This is sort of VC adjacent, since we know Daniel and Louis meet in a bar in San Francisco in 1973. It's very likely a gay bar, though this is never explicitly stated.

That means both Daniel and Louis were at the very least on the fringes of gay culture in San Francisco in 1973 (and very likely far more involved). As it happens, my dad was a musician in the Bay Area in the 70s, and he kept copies of papers that advertised his band playing, no matter how small the ad. Among them, I found some of those free "here's what's happening around town" type newspapers that existed before the internet from the summer of 1973, all about the gay nightlife culture in SF.

I found this really interesting, and I love gay history and learning what the culture was like, so I figured I'd share in honor of Pride! 🏳️‍🌈

Here are some photos of the ads, along with a map of the Castro District as it was in August 1973. Some of the art is a little risque, although keep in mind these papers were just sitting on counters in bars and cafes for people to take.

Armand's whole outfit in the bench scene gives me such strong Casablanca vibes, specifically the "We'll always have Paris" scene -- another scene where one half of a couple has to talk the other into a plan of action in the face of rising danger Which is interesting because Armand's outfit is basically the same as Humphrey Bogart's, but his demeanor/the way he's framed/his role in the conversation make him seem much more like he's Ilsa in the actual scene

Hi same anon, I appreciate your response and get what you’re saying. I suppose I’m just still quietly confident that the writers aren’t going to do that, like I really don’t think the amnesia thing is gonna be this big reveal or something I think it’s just a device for the story to move along and not have everything revealed at once and to compliment the memory is a monster theme as kind of a foil to Louis’ experience. You’re right though it’s about how they frame it so I’m just gonna choose to trust them for now and we’ll see if I have egg on my face…

I mean to me it's like.. is there any possible way daniel's amenisa bullshit is pertinent to louis/claudia/armand's main arc? i mean the DM theory that involves like years of his life (as hinted by the soundtrack title) and not just the night of the interview being hazy. ABSOLUTELY not. it's a devils minion storyline that at best only marginally involves louis, if at all, and i guess maybe draws some parallels to louis's story bc i guess unless something happens to a white character ppl won't understand?? which again, for a season that's purported to explain what the root of louis's guilt re: claudia is about and also WHY louis would call armand the love of his life, what is that doing there? is daniel going to suddenly remember that armand actually explained his evil plan to him once in the 80s?? again, in the book, louis comes to this realization on his own over time and doesn't need some white guy to explain it to him lol. it simply undercuts the loumand relationship, the claudia mystery, and louis as the driver of the story of s1-2. as for keeping the mystery, well the show only audience doesn't know what happened to claudia yet?? and its not like daniel got to that part of the story in the first interview so there's a lot that he and the audience don't know, which is more than interesting enough to be the narrative thrust of the season. however it just doesn't feel like the show has confidence in that.

like i think it is baffling to me how ive only seen one person ever discussing the immense amount of racism in this book because this is like. shes been powering up her racism in her writing to blast out with this bullshit. like this is so fucking gross.

thinking a lot about the dynamics and mechanics of one direction. simon cowell throws together these five dudes who, at the beginning, are like, just some guys. i've seen harry's first audition. it was fucking bad. and they just look like normal guys. fast forward they are now five of the like. idk. all five are attractive and have massive groups of fans and a handful of gay allegations (obviously. OBVIOUSLY. two more than the other three.)

like "i'd do niall" is so insane because like. you have three other hot friends. why niall? why did you say that? like i get it. niall's MY favorite. but i'm not publicly stating (fairly unprompted) which of my four best friends/coworkers i would bang.

and then zayn leaves and the world collapses for a bit and then the whole band breaks up and like. one of y'all is . pretty obviously. way more successful than the other ones.

but also like, seeing harry (much like seeing taylor, and olivia, etc etc etc) is a status marker. you don't even have to like him that much, but you go if you can for the outfits and the bracelets and the instagram posts.

idk i got thinking a lot about this bc i saw niall last night (so good btw) and he kept talking about how lovely and large the crowd was (sold out, but a small ampitheater— maybe 6-7k?) and i just was thinking like. you've played to much bigger audiences than this. sold out stadiums. bigger than stadiums. but he genuinely seemed so happy to be playing for us. i wonder how different it feels to play for like 15k but they're there for five of you versus 6k who are they Just For You.
