I have been tagged by @truthhux to share my fave first watches of May! and what an excellent time to catch me, because I’ve just had two 12+ hour flights and I spent them watching:

the colour purple: one of my favourite musicals, slightly disappointing adaptation

suzume: wonderful 2022 film from makoto shinkai!

the boys in the boat: I cannot tell you how much I did not care about these boys in these boats, however my friend is in the final 20 minutes of it so……..I just watched that

mean girls: fantastic. excellent adaptation (if you ignore that the songs aren’t actually very good), loved every second, jon hamm was a surprise!

the miracle club: wonderful!!! fantastic!!! no notes!!! 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪

all of us strangers: i went in without any knowledge of the plot except “andrew scott gay”, highly recommend

a strange way of life: i really just watched non stop gay sex for about two and a half hours on this plane. pedro pascal and ethan hawke revisiting an old romance in this wild western short film!

the great escaper: fan 👏🏽 tas 👏🏽 tic 👏🏽, and I’m not just saying that because Michael Caine was using my exact rollz rollator throughout! very strong film about a 90 year old veteran sneaking out of his nursing home to go to calais for the 75 year d-day anniversary. glenda jackson is supreme. wonderful.

(the way it reinterprets season 3 is so good and heartbreaking, I haven’t reread it in a while but it has stuck in my brain. excellent characterization, haunting story, stayed with me so much that it’s semi-responsible for my brain inventing a fantasy au for my current sci-fi fandom.)

Fandom: Gallifrey Audios

it’s difficult to think of a Gallifrey fic by @whifferdills that I don’t feel this way about (I have a note in my notes app that’s just quotes from their fics bc oh my god, so many sentences that drive into the heart of these characters’ stories, that show how complicated they are). but to pick one:

The Far Tundra by @whifferdills: Transformation, destruction, movement, growth. s5/6ish, vaguely canon-compliant. Rated E.

(a brilliant character study of the main three characters, their complex relationships with each other and with Gallifrey — but it’s especially a Narvin character study. I don’t know how to accurately describe what is so !! about it, but it is so good, highly recommend)

I'd like to know how I'd do at Elsewhere University. I'm a medieval history student, who specialises in medieval fairy lore. I also know a lot of fairy tales and have an almost encyclopedic knowledge of Fairy Tale Rules, most of those being Stay Away From The Fair Folk. I have blue/purple hair and spend most of my time singing, telling stories, knitting or spinning thread. Would I survive?

There’s so many talented people in this fandom and I have blown away by things people have made, but I will try to keep it to just a few.

In terms of fic, I adore the fantasy AU ‘Something enchanting, something deadly’ by @lottiesnotebook and @motherfortuna which really effectively adapts the characters of the podcast into a completely different and well-developed world (plus Hera is a dragon!!) https://archiveofourown.org/works/11390229/chapters/25506954
