Thinking about rooms. Who we're trapped with I each. She changed him. She created a new perspective. A new line of thinking. He doesn't often open himself to new ideas. She broke through that. Through his walls. One other person does that. His God. He told her something he doesn't talk about. She changed him, he changed her.

it's probably not, but i wonder a little bit if this line is an intentional reference, given that "the last house on the left" is about a pair of girls who are abducted, raped, and murdered and whose killers are then murdered by their respective parents, while the episode is about a pair of girls who are abducted and raped, one of whom is murdered, with the last of their killers being murdered by the surviving girl's father. (ironically, the remake where one of the girls survives came out after this episode aired)

Thoughts on the latest Spain spoilers; are we going to the “Dog Islands”? Plus a tangent on alcohol, pilgrimage and a cure.
In light of the latest Spain spoilers laid out in this post by @bookqueenrules, I wanted to bring back this post that I wrote back in April, when the first rumors of TWDDD filming in Spain appeared. The currently unconfirmed spoilers below describe how Daryl and Carol arrive on the coast of Galicia:
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Like I explained in the post from April, themes of Spain, Santiago de Compostela, and pilgrimage under the “way under the field of stars” have been lurking in the background of the show since at least 5x8 Coda, possibly even further back. We now know that there will be filming in Galicia/ Santiago de Compostela (read here) and I can’t help but feeling that it’s all coming together. In this post, I talked about how Santiago de Compostela could be tied to “the green route” written on Morgan’s wall back in 3x12 Clear, and how that potentially could be a tie to Beth (whose last name is Greene), and how the Northern Way of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, which goes through an area called “Green Spain” could be significant for TD.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I’ve also discussed the themes of Spain, Santiago de Compostela and pilgrimage in more detail here, here)
Also, @galadrieljones made an incredible discovery while researching some coordinates from FTWD, coordinates that supposedly were pointing to a repeater station in Georgia, but in reality pointed to an area of the Atlantic Ocean near the Canary Islands (which are Spanish territory located outside the West African coast).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are several interesting aspects to the Canary Islands, aside from being loved holiday destinations for sun-deprived North Europeans (of which I am one). The name itself comes from Latin Canis, which means "dog". There's even a breed of dogs local to the islands, Presa Canario.
Tumblr media
Again, the dog theme is super significant in TWDU. I’ve talked about the Sirius symbolism incessantly since 4x13 Alone, when Beth and Daryl were visited by a one-eyed, white dog, embodying the spirit of Sirius the Dog Star, the star that returns to the night sky after having been missing for …let’s just say several seasons. 4x13 was when I became aware of this particular symbolism, but in reality it’s been present since the pilot 1x1 Days Gone Bye, which I’ve also discussed in several posts.
Tumblr media
Sirius the Dog Star is located in the star constellation Canis Major, “canis” is Latin for “dog”, and the Canary Islands can be translated to “Dog Islands”. And as @galadrieljones discovered, coordinates from FTWD pointed in that direction.
Tumblr media
I’ve laid out the theoretical foundations of the Sirius symbolism in many posts over the years, here’s one of the first ones I wrote on it.
So yeah, there’s that. Lots of dog/Sirius symbolism. Additionally, the Canary Islands serve as an important gateway to transatlantic crossings. This is due to their favorable position in the Atlantic Ocean, where the trade winds historically has aided vessels across the ocean.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Could this latest development, with Daryl and Carol reportedly aiming to cross the Atlantic on a boat from the UK, lend itself to a future storyline where they instead have to cross from the Canary Islands, or shall we say Dog Islands?
This could, in the narrative, serve as a plausible solution in Daryl and Carol’s quest to RETURN to the US after their European adventure. See what I did there? Sirius symbolism is about returns/rebirths/resurrections. Where better to achieve that than on a group of island whose name literally means Dog Islands? That’s double Sirius symbolism.
And of course, for TD, the big question is, will Beth, the Sirius figure, return (or RESURRECT) with them? Will they find her there, or have they already found her and she’s the one who suggests returning via the Canary (Dog) Islands?
I have no idea, just throwing out suggestions here. We won’t know until we know, plus keep in mind these are, at the time of writing, unconfirmed rumors. However, it is interesting how spoilers constantly seem to be perfectly aligned with theories we already explored months and years ago.
And on a personal note, I started theorizing about Santiago de Compostela and pilgrimage literally after 5x8 Coda, and now, all these years later, we have confirmed reports on filming in Santiago de Compostela, on a show that was originally called Pilgrim.
Tumblr media
Of course that doesn’t prove anything, but it gives me the feeling we might be on to something 👀
Finally, I will mention that I believe “the green(e) route” from Morgan’s wall (possibly represented by the Northern Way to Santiago de Compostela, through “Green Spain”), will be tied to not only Beth’s “resurrection” specifically, but rather a “resurrection” of human kind in the form of a vaccine/cure/treatment to the Wildfire zombie virus. I talked about how that was foreshadowed in 4x4 Indifference in this post, where we saw Daryl completely mesmerized by a green jasper he found, literally a "rock in the road", while they were out searching for antibiotics to combat the prison flu back in season 4.
Tumblr media
My hypothesis is that the “rock in the road” is a reference to St. Roch, pilgrim and patron saint of plague victims, known to have healing powers, who was himself healed from the plague when a stray dog licked his wounds. He therefore also became patron saint of dogs and dog lovers:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
See how there’s dog/Sirius symbolism in that? Sirius symbolism is ultimately about resurrection, rebirth and returns, and what represents resurrection more than an actual cure to the zombie virus?
In 4x4 Indifference, Daryl and company were specifically out searching for antibiotics (a "cure for the plague”) when he found the green(e) “Roch in the Road”. I believe that’s a metaphor for how we will find hints of a cure in relation to symbolism that deals with pilgrimage (St. Roch and Santiago de Compostela), something green (Beth Greene and green(e) Spain) and that Beth’s resurrection will be a metaphor for the revival of humanity.
@galadrieljones recently wrote an incredible post on how she believes the bottles of green Chartreuse spotted in the trailer for TBOC might be a nod to a historical template for how scientists working on a cure for the zombie virus were exiled to Spain, modeled after real events where monks producing Chartreuse were exiled to Spain in the past. Go read it, it's excellent!
The Chartreuse can be seen on the table under the Mona Lisa painting in this screenshot:
Tumblr media
I’ve been meaning to write a separate post replying to the Chartreuse post, and I still have every intention of doing so one of these days, I just don’t have the greatest time-management skills, I guess 😄 I don’t know where time went, this summer was super busy. But it’s coming, I promise!
In the meantime, I’ll just say that I believe the Chartreuse hypothesis sounds more than plausible, in fact I’ve written several posts on how in TWDU, alcohol has always been used as a metaphor for “the antidote”, meaning a cure, such as here, where I also explain how it is Sirius symbolism.
In FTWD 4x16 I Lose Myself, we saw this meticulously explained when our heroes had to find a way to survive being poisened by antifreeze containing methanol:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wrote a post on that, read it here.
Remember how in 4x4 Indifference, at the veterinary college where they found the antibiotics that ultimately saved the lives of the flu victims that were dying, Bob famously also found a bottle of brandy:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Daryl did not approve, to say the least. He felt Bob should have focused on finding antibiotics for the plagued prison population. However, TPTB, by placing the bottle of brandy among the antibiotics, cleverly made sure to establish an association between the alcohol and the antibiotics, the "antidote/cure".
They also did that earlier in the episode, when they came across a gas station where several people had committed suicide by drinking antifreeze, which often contains methanol. This was a storyline that was later repeated in FTWD 4x16 I lose myself, which I mentioned above, where they explicitly articulate "the antidote is ethanol". Again, the takeaway for us is that alcohol is a metaphor for a cure.
Tumblr media
The antidote to methanol poisoning is ethanol, otherwise known as alcohol. So where methanol is the poison, ethanol/alcohol is the cure. Meaning, TPTB established alcohol as metaphor for a "cure" all the way back in 4x4 Indifference, first by showing the deadly effects of the "opposite" of alcohol, meaning methanol. Then they did so again, by strategically placing a bottle of alcohol among actual antibiotics, the actual cure which helped heal the sick prison community.
I also elaborated on this in the Fighting Fire With Fire posts (here, here and here).
Long story short, alchohol has been used as a metaphor for a "cure" since at least 4x4 Indifference, where we also saw Daryl find a "Roch in the road", which in my opinion was a reference to the pilgrim St.Roch, patron saint of plague victims, known to be able to heal people from the plague, as well as being healed himself. Basically, it's peak "cure" symbolism.
I believe the fact that Daryl's "Roch in the road" was green, is a nod to Green Spain, a stretch of land that needs to be crossed (in pilgrimage) in order to get to the real cure, which potentially could be under production in Spain, possibly somewhere near Santiago de Compostela, a world famous destination of pilgrimage.
Pilgrimage has always been about healing in some way, shape or form, and we saw this clearly with Morgan, in the coda after 5x8 Coda, when he reached Father Gabriel's church as though it was the destination of his pilgrimage. The last time we had seen him, in 3x12 Clear, he had been a tormented soul, now he was a pilgrim reaching his destination, and he was "healed".
He "resurrected" a cross, which TD interpreted as a foreshadow of the "resurrection" of Beth, who had "died" just moments earlier.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I believe we will see the resurrection of a certain Beth Greene, which will serve as a metaphor for the revival of hummanity, meaning a cure for the Wildfire virus. Fighting Fire With Fire.

Note
Seriously there are a lot of bad buck-centric takes/tropes on here but the one that chris thinks eddie will push buck away is the absolute worst to me like 1. Chris loves buck but eddie is his dad and he wants eddie to be happy and eddie has never actively pushed anyone out of chris’s life nor has chris expressed worry eddie would do so. He actively keeps his shitty parents in his life and is trying to fix his relationship with them so chris can have a relationship with them as well. and 2. Chris and buck’s relationship is actually quite separate from eddie in canon like the only signification chris/buck development that I can think of that eddie was present for was maybe 3x12 ? And 4x14 I suppose. But if (strong if here) chris were ever worried about buck leaving if something bad happened with eddie it is something that would and should be explored via a buck/chris conflict and not a eddie/chris conflict. Because it is a sentiment that is tied to buck and chris in 4x08, not anything that has happened between eddie and chris. (And also if buck ever “left” it wouldnt even be because eddie did something I think. It would be because buck perceived himself as in the wrong and would be giving eddie and chris space) Also 3. chris is like soo much older than he was in s4 now, and is also written as older/more mature in canon and it would be nice if fanon/headcanons could keep up
yes literally all of this and. well honestly i’m not even saying that it’s not a realistic response i guess? like it’s not out of the realm of possibility. but by no means do i believe it’s the most likely AND it has very quickly become THE singular conflict that anyone can conceive of. half the time it doesn’t even come across as being written based on chris’s character but on what people themselves think about eddie’s relationships (and my BIGGEST pet peeve is when people act like he’s been regularly externalizing his issues with shannon when that is quite literally the opposite of what he does!!!!!!). it’s just so unenjoyable like probably my least favorite thing to read about at the moment. and it’s EVERYWHERE. so.

The Couch Manifesto: Or, when is a couch not about the couch?
When is a couch not about the couch? When it’s about the home.
I made a post at some point earlier in the season about Buck and couches, and am interested to see that we are very much still on theme.  Because the couch metaphor is about the couch, but in reality it’s not about the couch at all, and that is, in fact, Buck’s problem.
At its core, Buck’s journey from the beginning has not been about finding love.  It has been broader than that.  Finding love is one piece, but he’s really been on a journey of self-discovery, and first and foremost searching for family, for home, for belonging.
In S1, Buck didn’t really have a home.  He had a house that he lives in, yes.  A room in a house that he shared with a bunch of other guys.  And then he fell in love with Abby.  And then she was gone, but he had her apartment.  Her couch.  Still not his home, but a place to live, a place that had memories of them, a place where if she hadn’t left, maybe they could have built a home together.
Buck finally left Abby’s after he accepted their relationship was over, but he then spent S2 adrift, even once he started dating Ali.  He was literally couch surfing, rotating between Maddie and the members of his found family.  He didn’t have a couch of his own.  He didn’t have a home.
Buck associating the couch with romance because his “couches came with girlfriends” is really interesting in that context, because when you look at S2, Ali didn’t just pick out his couch.  She picked out the loft.  The fancy, gorgeous, hipster loft that is a stunning space but really isn’t Buck.  And immediately after he signed the lease, he got his leg crushed and had to…what?  Sleep on the couch.  Feeling like a constant guest in what was supposed to be his new home.  The home he was going to share in part with Ali, but didn’t get the chance because they also broke up almost immediately thereafter.
The couch is not the problem.  The couch isn’t the wrong couch (because see 3x09).  The home is.  (Or at least, the physical space of the loft is).
It doesn’t feel like an accident that the times Buck’s loft feels most like a home are scenes with Eddie and Christopher.  And there are a lot of scenes involving Eddie and/or Christopher in the loft (and thereafter, Buck also in the Diaz home) in S3, beginning with Kids Today and the tsunami (and Christopher sits on his couch).  3x01, 3x03, 3x09 (the Kitchen Scene that culminated in all three of them on Buck’s couch), 3x12.  But 3x11 (on the heels of Buck and Christopher at Eddie’s with Hen and Denny in 3x10) verbalized something that had previously been unstated.  “This is Eddie’s house, I’m not really a guest.”  Buck, who has felt many times like he was a guest even in his own house, feeling like he isn’t in Eddie’s is Important.
In 4x07, (after Buck and Christopher were on Eddie’s couch in Future Tense), Buck talked about a need for a safe space and how the loft didn’t feel like a safe space.  But the loft hasn’t been a safe space for Buck for awhile.  It wasn’t for much of S4, and it certainly wasn’t in S5 with how miserable he was there with Taylor.  Yes, Taylor made him get rid of his couch (the Ali couch), and replace it with hers, but Buck was already forcing things with her, was already settling, was already unhappy.  The loft was not a safe space.  It was not a home with her.
Again, notable that the times when the loft feels the most like a home is when the Diaz Boys are there.  Equally notable in the context of the BT misery of S5 that Eddie and Christopher were absent from the loft.  The only time we saw Eddie there was in 5x04 on the balcony—outside looking in.  Eddie (and Christopher) could not exist in the loft at the same time as Taylor, just like how Buck disappeared from the Diaz house as soon as Eddie introduced Ana to Christopher and didn’t return until Survivors (when, pointedly, he was sleeping on the couch).
In S6, Buck didn’t have a couch, and then he did (one chosen by his mother), but regardless of whether he did or not, all of the loft scenes with Eddie and Christopher were in the kitchen.  The heart of the home.  (Indeed, interesting how until Kameron gave birth on it, the only person to ever sit on the Margaret couch was Buck himself).
6x12 was loud as hell though about the couch metaphor though, so we have to unpack that.  6x12 was tying everything together—about how the couch is about the couch, but not about the couch.  Buck fell asleep on Eddie’s couch immediately after not being able to sleep on his own.  But it was more than that.  It was about Buck running to a safe space, running to the place (the people) who are his true home.  It wasn’t just that he couldn’t sleep on his uncomfortable couch, it was that he didn’t feel safe in his entire apartment. (And as we saw in 6x17, he was once again made a guest in his own space when Kameron came to stay).
And the way that Eddie’s home is a safe space for Buck is underscored by what happened after he woke up in 6x12.  He couldn’t open up to Maddie or Hen or Connor in his apartment (even in his kitchen, the heart of the home), but he could open up to Eddie in Eddie’s kitchen, because that’s where he feels safe and home.
The couch is not meant to be about romance in isolation.  The couch is about romance, but also about home and family (emphasized further by showcasing Madney + Jee-Yun and the Wilsons on their couches).  Focusing exclusively on the couch-as-romance is missing the forest for the trees, and the fact that Buck is so singularly focused on only the romance of that is quite possibly part of why he’s missing the point/misunderstanding the assignment so badly, unable to see what is right in front of him (remember, he was confused about how he was so quickly and easily able to fall asleep on Eddie’s couch in 6x12).
Honestly, it’s almost as if Buck needs to make the connection between Eddie + Christopher + him as family before he can realize that the connection between him and Eddie is romantic. Because he’s still trying to do things in the “right” order—find love and then family—because he thinks that’s what life/love should look like, he’s still misunderstanding the assignment, still trying to find it instead of building up what he already has.  Buck is not in a place where he is ready to see and accept the full extent of his desires about what he already is and what he wants to be with Eddie and Christopher.  And so we continue.
So with the couch metaphor + the end of this season being Buck and Natalia together and Buck asking her to help him find a couch, I feel like the broader concept is really…Natalia might be the right person for now while he is in the place he is, the couch he picks out might be the right couch for now, but he’s still not quite picking it out himself since he asked for her to go with him, and more than that, he’s still picking out a couch to fit an apartment that’s not and never has been a true home for him (except when Eddie and Christopher have been there).
Two other brief points:
1. I am obsessed with the Buck-Eddie-Christopher sleeping on Eddie’s couch trifecta.  And want to point out that In 6x01 before Maddie and Chim got back together, before they were able to be open and honest with each other about their true feelings and what they wanted, we saw them fall asleep on their couch.  Asleep because they weren’t ready yet.
  2. For further evidence that the romantic aspect of the “right couch” isn’t about the couch but about the person, one need not look further than Eddie and Ana.  We saw Eddie and Ana (and Christopher) in relation to couches a lot.  In Breaking Point, Eddie and Ana on her couch during their awkward math date, Eddie later inviting Ana in to reintroduce her to Christopher as his girlfriend and sit on the couch with them.  And in Parenthood, Ana was on Eddie’s couch with Eddie alone and then with Eddie and Christopher when Christopher comes in.  Eddie’s couch is the right couch, but Ana was the wrong person for it and for them.  Buck, however, is the right person, to be Eddie’s romantic partner and Christopher’s other parent.  They just need to open their eyes and face it.

I’ve said before that I think it could make sense that Nate might want to return as assistant kitman for a little bit - to concentrate on being happy, to be one with the guys, to join in with all the team rituals he was barred from in S1. I also think that, going by clips from 3x12 and dialogue from 3x11, it’s not ridiculous to assume that he ended up back as coach, and that the kitman stint was intended as temporary (and likely done at Nate’s instigation).
However, do to that well it really needed a couple of additional scenes, which I can only assume had to be cut to save time...
-
“Good to have you back, mate,” Colin says, coming up to Nate while the team come together, chatting and laughing over Isaac’s costume. “But what are you doing as assistant kitman? We thought you were gonna be our coach again.”
“Oh! Oh, I know that. But, you know, it was all very sudden, and there wouldn’t have been time to draw up a new coaching contract before the season ended, and I still wanted to return in whatever capacity I could, and I - ” Nate’s cheerful ramble ends, his gaze slides over to where Will is shaking Isaac’s hand, “I had some unfinished business here, you know? Besides, I always enjoyed spending time in the locker room with you lot.”
“Glad to hear it, boyo. But you’re going to be coaching us next season, right? We didn’t trek it all the way over to Tooting just to set you up doing laundry, you know.”
“Hey, I’ll have you know that my fabric softener blend has been much sought after by members of the team,” Nate snarks. “And their mums.”
Colin just looks flatly at Nate.
Finally Nate grimaces, eyes briefly tensing shut. “I…I don’t know; alright, Colin? I just – I didn’t behave well as a coach at all when I was here, and I don’t know if I trust myself to do the same thing again, you know? I don’t think I deserve to be your coach again.”
“Oh, come on, you weren’t all that – ”
“No, no, no, let me say it – that was something I was wanting all my life, you know, and I,” hands flail, “I fucked it up, alright? I made mistakes, and I hurt people, and I just – I’m not sure if I want to put myself back there yet.” Nate sighs, visibly pulling himself together. “Look, for now I just want to enjoy my time here and focus on the last game, alright?”
Colin sighs and huffs, but he nods. “Whatever you say, Nate.” He glances around and lowers his voice conspiratorially. “Look, rules are rules and all, but me and the Honourable McAdoo are gonna split your fine between the two of us, yeah? No need to worry about it.”
Nate laughs. “Well, that’s very generous of you; but if I’m part of the team I want to be part of the team, and I can afford it now – ”
“Nah. Don’t worry about it, boyo. Just some unfinished business, yeah?”
Colin tips Nate a wink and heads back into the group of laughing footballers, leaving Nate watching them all. His eyes travel over the Greyhounds – the team he once said could do anything, his smile broad – and then, as his smile softens, he glances back to the coach’s office. Ted can be seen in the window, talking to someone.
Jolted out of his reverie by someone’s laughter, Nate looks back to the footballers. He laughs genuinely, loudly. When Bumbercatch gestures him into the crowd he joins them, willingly. He’s part of the team.
-
“No! No, no, no, that’s…that’s lovely.”
“Knew you’d understand.” Ted pauses, smiles. “Mind if I ask you a personal question, Nate?”
Nate’s still blinking back tears, but he manages to muster a deep breath. “Of course, sure.”
“What the heck are you doing back here as a kitman anyhow?”
Nate nearly flinches again, as if Ted has snuck up on him a second time. He looks around sharply, but Ted is just staring up at the wall, smiling.
“Sure wasn’t expecting it, when I came in to see you folding towels again.”
“I just…didn’t feel it was right to return as a coach yet,” Nate says. “It just didn’t seem right.”
Ted looks at him, until Nate blushes and glances down. Finally Ted nods.
“Right, right. Well, I get that. After I came home and found out that my dad died I dropped out of my high school drama club entirely. Kept thinking that if I’d just got home in time that day I coulda gotten him the help he needed, I felt it was only right.” Ted’s words are soft. Nate blinks in surprise, looking at him carefully. “Just landed the role of Kenickie as well. Heckuva thing, could have landed myself a career on Broadway rather than Richmond.” He smiles. “I just wonder…what would have happened if someone had pointed out that I was just wasting time punishing myself, you know? That it wasn’t helping anyone to deprive myself of something I loved, least of all me.”
Nate bites into his lip. He’s trying not to cry.
“Right. I…I think I understand that.”
“I knew you would, Nate. You’re a smart fella.”
Another pause.
“I just need to think about it, Ted.”
“Well, you’d better think long and hard about that sucker,” Ted says. His eyes crease gently. “After all, after this week there’ll be a space going free on the coach’s team for someone with plenty of smarts and a big old heart as well. I can’t think of anyone better for the job.”
Nate visibly softens as he looks at Ted. “You’re really going back, aren’t you?”
Ted pauses. His eyes flicker back up to the space where the poster used to hang, and then a tender smile deepens. “Time to go back, Nate. I didn’t know how much longer I could take, not being with my little boy.”
Briefly Nate hovers, and then touches Ted’s elbow. “Yeah. Yeah, I get that.”
-
“Aren’t you going to stand up with the other coaches, Nate?” Will asks as they sit together, awkwardly watching eleven grown men openly weeping on the pitch.
“I’m the assistant kitman,” Nate murmurs absent-mindedly, already chewing on a thumbnail. God, he’s nervous. “To. Assistant to the kitman.”
There’s a pause. He glances across to see Will glaring pointedly at him.
“You get a better view from back here anyway,” he adds weakly.
“Uh-huh,” Will says, not sounding particularly convinced.
-
Throughout the match Nate is on the edge of his seat, almost straining at the bit. Unable to join Roy, Beard and Ted standing on the sidelines. Not quite part of their group, but not in amongst Will and the physios and the reserves either. Eyes fixed on the Richmond team.
Whenever the Greyhounds miss a pass or take a tackle Nate winces. Halfway through the second half Ted turns and sees a notebook has appeared in Nate’s hand: he’s jotting down notes without even taking his eyes off the play. Ted smiles to himself, and then turns back to the game.
When the additional seconds of time are added Nate’s on his feet: still not joining the coaches, notebook still in his hands. Staring onto the pitch as if his life depends on it. Nate’s eyes are flickering as Roy and Beard debate the merits of trick plays - murmuring beneath his breath, brain going into overdrive, and then – oh. Ohh.
Realisation dawns on Nate’s face. On Ted’s face. Their gazes meet.
“Oh my God,” Nate says softly. Half a whisper, half elation.
“Yep,” Ted is going – grinning, already beckoning Nate to come forward. “Yep, yep, yep, yep, yep – ”
“You sure that – ”
“Yes.”
“You really think it’ll – ”
“Yes! Hey, hey Jamie!” Ted hollers for Jamie’s attention and then mimes handing something over to Nate. “It’s an Oscar!”
“Or a Tony Award!” Nate hollers. He’s grinning.
He knows where he belongs.

Meta: Root as the Chosen One
One thing I love about Root's arc is that it's a subversion of the traditional 'Chosen One' narrative.
The Chosen One is usually born with special powers or featured in a prophecy, making them the only one capable of saving the world. Root, however, strong-arms her way into it as an adult by seeking out the Machine for a chance to serve Her ("I don't want to control your Machine. [...] I just want to set it free." 2x01).
The Machine then chooses her as Analog Interface, likely both because of the abilities and loyalty she demonstrated and out of a desire to help her, which Root eagerly accepts ("The Machine offered me a job. She never said it would be easy." 3x17).
This position gives Root special powers through access to the Machine's omniscience. Including real-time updates about her surroundings ("Twelve US Marshals guard the building, plus our friend over there who was scouting the perimeter that we're now inside. Air support is ten minutes out." 3x10), information about people posing a danger to her ("2 O'CLOCK. 2007 ANTERIOR CRUCIATE LIGAMENT TORN." 3x12, via Morse Code) and being told where to aim when shooting people, which she demonstrates to great effect in 3x10 and 3x17.
Being the Analog Interface comes with the job of "trying to save the world, of course. By preventing the emergence of a second machine." (3x17), then later ensuring their survival when Samaritan comes online ("We had to settle for protecting the seven people who might be able to take it back." 3x23) and working to defeat it ("Because this is war. And the thing we're up against, it has virtually unlimited resources." 4x01). Which, as the one person the Machine speaks to directly, only Root can do.
The typical Chosen One is a reluctant hero, who struggles with the pressure thrust upon them or the idea that they are special. Root steps into the role with ease and enthusiasm, immediately considering herself one of the heroes ("I know it seems weird, but I'm one of the good guys now." 3x17). She feels secure in the idea that she's special ("The truth is that She's chosen me." 3x01) and carrying out her job brings her fulfillment, as demonstrated by her blissful expression when being retasked in 3x19.
She has no problem accepting that this mission, which she takes very seriously, means that her fate is no longer hers alone:
Shaw: Wait, Root, is that all? Where are you?
Root: Right where I'm supposed to be. (3x23)
Despite their doubts, the Chosen One is committed to defeating the Big Bad because they want to save the world. Root is immediately dedicated to the cause ("Like I said, we have a larger fight ahead of us. I think we should be together when that begins. Don't you?" 3x10) and willing to do anything, even give her life in service to it ("If I don't see you, Harold, it's been a fun ride." 4x05). However, this hinges on her desire to serve the Machine and protect Shaw and Finch, rather than any concern about the world as a whole:
Root: In the first thirty minutes after Samaritan comes online, a lot of people are gonna be killed. But they're gonna start with four: you, me, your helper monkey, and Shaw. And there won't be a damn thing anyone, including your Machine, can do to stop it. You think I don't care about people, Harold? I'm doing all of this to save you. (3x17)
Therefore, it is only when she loses these three tethers that her doubts show themselves. After Samaritan comes online and her contact with the Machine is severely limited, she begins to struggle ("She was supposed to remake the world. Now God's on the run. I have to keep going. [...] Even without Her, I can still see the edges of the tapestry." 4x05). She sought out this position because she wanted to be the Machine's Chosen One, now she has all but lost that connection yet remains a key player in the fight.
Shaw is then taken by Samaritan (4x11) and Root's devotion to the cause falters for the first time. She begins to disregard what the Machine taught her by preparing to kill Control (4x12) and torturing Leslie Thompson (4x13). When the Machine tells her to stop looking for Shaw, she walks away both from the team and the job that has been her purpose for so long:
Finch: The Machine is asking us to stop looking for her. Perhaps the Machine does know, perhaps it has a plan. But for our own survival, our sanity, I believe we must reconcile ourselves with never knowing the truth. Otherwise, our pursuit of it will consume us entirely.
Root: Goodbye, Harold. (4x13)
The next time we see her, she saves Finch's life and smiles at a security camera, then tells Reese "there's a lot that's new." (4x15). This indicates that she and the Machine have renegotiated and, while Root is working with Her again, she no longer holds the same unwavering faith.
When Finch has a plan to strike a blow against Samaritan that will likely cost his life, Root directly disobeys the Machine:
Finch: My value to the Machine is irrelevant.
Root: You're too important to me.
Finch: The Machine didn't tell you to do this.
Root: She told me not to. I thought I could sacrifice everyone, I really did. Win some, lose some, right? It's for a good cause. But it turns out I can't lose you, Harold. Not you and Shaw. (4x18)
For the first time, she puts her own needs ahead of the 'good cause' she was willing to give everything for and sabotages a chance to defeat the Big Bad, because she found the one thing that matters more to her than her duty. Finch then tells her "I don't want to see you for a while." (4x18).
Despite all of this, she continues to carry out the Machine's instructions and comes to Reese's rescue in 4x19, then goes back to working with the team.
In 4x21 she gets a call appearing to be from Shaw and instantly regrets stopping her search when Shaw has been alive all this time. Prepared to walk into a trap for a chance to save her, Root uses her own life as a bargaining chip to manipulate the Machine into helping them. Once again, she prioritizes the life of her loved one over everything else.
While following this lead, Root learns that Samaritan is close to finding the Machine and her goal expands to protecting both Her and Shaw no matter what:
Root: They're close to finding you. I don't care what happens to me.
Finch: What did the Machine tell you?
Root: She says it's too dangerous.
Finch: I'm inclined to agree.
Root: This isn't just a rescue mission to save Shaw. The Machine needs our help too. If we don't save them, who will? (4x21)
When Samaritan threatens her to get the Machine to reveal Her location, Root begs the Machine not to do it ("Don't do it. Please. Don't give yourself up. Harold was right. We are interchangeable. You can replace us. You can keep fighting." 4x21). All she wants is to protect her loved ones.
The Machine agrees to Samaritan's bargain, then gives the team Her own number to warn them of an imminent system shutdown and directions for how to help Her. When it looks like they won't be able to get there in time, Root gives the Machine an ultimatum - "No more standing on the sidelines. You want us to save your skin? Get in the game." (4x22). Ever since becoming the Analog Interface, she has been helping with the Machine's mission. Now she wants the Machine to help with her mission.
Root and Finch then save the Machine and work tirelessly until they restore Her. Root is also focussed on protecting her loved ones, which has expanded to include Reese and Fusco ("John needs our help now. You have to give us something to work with." 5x05. "An exit strategy. For you and your son to disappear off the grid, just in case." 5x07).
The priority of finding Shaw never leaves Root's mind and eventually she once again forces the Machine to help her by threatening to withhold her cooperation ("I refuse to do one more mission until I know that what I'm doing is going to lead me to Sameen." 5x07). Together they send a message to Shaw, which gives her the motivation she needs to escape, and Root is so desperate to be reunited that she would have given herself up to Samaritan if Reese hadn't intervened.
Throughout all of this, Root remains dedicated to the war against Samaritan and vehemently advocates for them to take a more offensive stance ("We have to be willing to do whatever it takes now, or we've already lost." 5x03). She then adds to the Machine's code to give Her an edge in the fight ("What if I said I hard-coded a little something extra into the system before you closed it for good? I gave Her the capacity to defend Herself." 5x10), thus fulfilling her duty as the Chosen One by using the abilities and loyalty the Machine chose her for to ensure Samaritan's defeat - but for her own reasons: protecting the family this role led her to.

Well i was talking about towl fav ep and fav richonne moment but i want your thought on twd too now :)
thank you so much clarifying anon, and for the question! i think the easiest way to do this is to break it up by show.
towl
favorite episodes: I think it goes without saying that just like everyone else episode 4 is my favorite. it's a stand out not just for towl but for twd as a whole and is magnificent from start to finish. as for the rest? i have a lot of trouble ranking them actually because i love all of them for different reasons, but I guess my other favorites in no particular order are:
6 because it was just SO satisfying. that reunion seriously healed something in me. I love the flashbacks and how their pillow talk was incorporated throughout.
3 because it had me literally screaming at my tv and i love angst <3
1 because i didn't realize how much i missed rick grimes until i got him back, and i'm still so impressed by how much they accomplished in that one episode. also i think andrew lincoln was phenomenal and the ending was perfect. it gave me that WE'RE SO FUCKING BACK!! feeling that set the tone for the whole series.
favorite richonne moments:
the family reunion in episode 6 goes without saying right? it's all i wanted from the series and they gave it to me and it was everything
like, all of episode 4 lol but the standouts for me are "you don't have to thank me ever" (like, that whole sequence of him saving her) "the only time I feel safe is when I'm with you" (because i'm STILL reeling from that) the without you I die monologue obviously and i also really love the specific way rick's voice cracks when he says "you think I didn't want to be with you? I tried everything" and the way michonne's lip trembles in response. i talked about how rick is suppressing his emotions throughout that entire episode and that's one of the few moments he loses his composure - it's SO effective
the full reunion in episode 2!
rick putting the ring on michonne's finger MID THRUST. hello?
the proposal! his nervousness! her obvious joy and delight! i actually really love how light and funny they were all throughout episode 5. i re-watch all of those scenes a LOT
rick pulling his gun on thorne when she put her hand on her knife while interrogating michonne/rick stepping in front of thorne's gun when she had it pointed at michonne.
MICHONNE THROWING THEM OUT OF THE HELICOPTER
an underrated moment from the finale i really love is when rick grab's michonne's fingers when thorne orders them to walk with their hands up. i love that he needed that contact!
in the finale when rick says he just wants to go home. he wouldn't have, and they both know it, but i love that he was allowed to express that. AND i love michonne's reaction to it.
michonne dropping her sword (again!) when she thinks rick is dead
i really really REALLY love the dream sequences from episode one. it definitely felt like a huge fuck you to everyone who said they never would have ended up together if the apocalypse hadn't happened. like! sorry but no! michonne is rick's soulmate! die mad about it!
twd
favorite episodes: 6x10 the next world, 7x12 say yes, and 3x12 clear for obvious reasons. I also really love 6x09 no way out for having one of my favorite richonne scenes ever, 4x09 after, 4x11 claimed, 5x11 the distance for the amazing richonne build-up, 9x01 a new beginning (richonne just feel VERY married), 9x05 what comes after because i was tense and distraught the whole time even though i was spoiled for the ending, and 9x06 who are you now: michonne's grief is so palpable even years later, danai was incredible and that scene with judith at the end wrecks me. plus the RJ reveal!
favorite richonne moments:
"i've never seen your face like that before." listen. LISTEN. years ago i saw a gifset of this exact scene right here on tumblr dot com and it was so cute that i decided i would watch the zombie show if those two get together. and now HERE I AM. it's the scene that started it all for me, and it's still one of my favorites because it's so cute.
FIRST KISS ON THE COUCH. arguably the best first kiss of all time
all of say yes but SPECIFICALLY when michonne drops her sword, and how she jumps into his arms when it turns out he's alive, the panicked way she says "no no no" when rick tells her she could lose him. but also, how goofy and silly they were the rest of the time. they have fun together! they don't just love each other, they like each other!
THE END OF 6x09 WHEN RICK WALKS OUT INTO THE HERD. michonne loses her shit completely in a way we didn't see again until the bridge. nothing is more terrifying to her than rick (or her kids) dying, and that will always get to me. the way she was the FIRST one out the door once denise gave the go ahead? the fact that the ONLY thing that kept her from running after him sooner was the fact that carl still needed her? GIRL???
rick smiling at michonne and carl on the train tracks AND the "i'm okay/I know/how?/because I'm okay too" exchange also on the train tracks. i'm a 'rick fell in love with her on the train tracks' truther forever and ever amen.
that hug at the end of 7x10 and the little kiss on her forehead :)
"I'm still with you." everything about that scene is just the two of them saying "i love you" without actually saying it.
"we should go to washington" oh my god the look on her FACE
in 4x09 that whole sequence where michonne sees herself in the walkers, kills them all, makes the deliberate choice to follow the tracks and they lead her directly to rick and carl???? the way she LOOKS TO THE HEAVENS AND CRIES??? rick's incredulous laughter and "it's for you"? what kind of invisible string tying you to me-soulmate bullshit?
the 9x05 "do you know why i fell in love with you?" dream sequence
9x01 "how'd I get so lucky finding you?" the domesticity of that entire scene.
first meeting at the prison. it's SO charged and it's so amazing to re-watch that scene and be like rick!!! that's your wife!!! and again. towl just confirms it really WAS soulmates meeting for the first time. incredible!
