They’re back! Baseball! Tim and Lucy and back!

When Tim woke up, he found Lucy’s head snuggled into his chest, her right leg entangled with his, her right hand on his shoulder, and her left hand tucked under his back. She really does cuddle like an octopus, he thought to himself with a soft laugh. She was breathing deeply and seemed to be at peace. Every once in a while, she would hum a little bit or laugh for a few seconds.

He was pleased that she seemed to be having happier dreams now. He was even a little proud that being close to him seemed to scare away the nightmares so she could sleep for a long stretch. He was also glad that he hadn’t had much to drink the night before so he didn’t need to get up and use the bathroom. He didn’t want to do anything to disturb Lucy.

He laid there fully awake for at least an hour before the nurse came in to hang a new bag of fluids and put a new bag of IV antibiotics on the pump. She was a bit surprised when she first opened the door to see them snuggled into the souped-up cot they had provided for Tim. But the surprise quickly morphed into a soft smile as she saw how peaceful and happy Lucy appeared to be, and she gave Tim a soft smile. He returned the smile and put his index finger to his lips, silently requesting that she stay quiet. The nurse smiled in return and turned to leave the room, waving as she did.

The peace only lasted another few minutes. Soon the voice of a man arguing with the nurses could be heard throughout the unit. Tim couldn’t make out everything that was said, but there was some argument about visiting hours. He man was insistent that he needed to see his girlfriend while the nurses were insistent that visiting hours hadn’t started yet and the woman in question was still asleep. Tim looked at his watch. It was 6:45. The yelling faded down the hallway as the man was escorted off the unit.

However, when 7:00 hit, the argument started again. Apparently, someone else in the waiting room had been told they could visit a loved one at 7:00, an hour before visiting hours, and he wanted to see his girlfriend before he had to go to work. Tim rolled his eyes and put his hand over Lucy’s exposed ear to try to muffle the sound. What an inconsiderate jerk, he thought. The nurses seemed to acquiesce to his demands as he heard them give him directions, and the sound of footsteps echoed down the hallway.

Much to Tim’s surprise, the man threw open Lucy’s door and marched inside. He paused in surprise though as he saw Lucy’s sleeping form cuddled into Tim. “Lucy??!!” he said, his voice laced with surprise and concern.

Lucy quickly lifted her head, blinked several times, and looked toward the door. “Chris?” she asked in a quiet, sleep-heavy voice.

Chris’ attention then turned to Tim. His features twisted with anger. “Get your damn hands off my girlfriend!!” he spat out. “She’s mine!”
