AN ODE TO REAL RED (or, i didn’t wake up planning to write an analysis on storytelling through red but here we are)

look, im really out of my depth here. i really am not one to make these lengthy, wordy analysis posts that articulate what color means to me. (if it’s your kind of thing, pls go read everything @dribs-and-drabbles posts! i love it there and look forward to the episodic breakdown each week). and yet, after my first rewatch, it hit me how much the color red spoke volumes. it hits different because it really explored the color in the way traditional storytelling and filmmaking treats color: as a visual dialog; to draw out depth in a scene.

ive told @talays-portkey that i needed to turn off everything i learned in color theory (and production/post-production for that matter) when i go into each episode. why? this show pokes fun (and i LOVE them for it, to an extent) at using the concept of color to saturate the show: tess’ wardrobe, spotlights, set locations, the collective group at the assoc, and script all create this gorgeous, playful style that works into believing it’s a different universe. there’s specifics in the worldbuilding (ex: counting, flowers, the beer) and then there’s the production that makes it fun to guess how each episode will build on the last.

but i think Real Red really shines in bringing us back to their world. to me, it’s the show’s way of telling me, “hey, time to turn that brain on because it’s now a dialog. look at what it’s telling you now.”

it gets reallllly lengthy (literally an a-z on everything on red i found), see ya under the cut

let me preface this by saying that this has no merit beyond my own interpretation of the visual dialog and it consistently fell into two categories: 1) of course, Dang translates to Red (so, Puen) and 2) Red symbolizing STOP.

a. the first real hint at red in the ambulance scene (not pictured, the vehicle itself probably also red); but i find this show a nice set up when the reflection lines up with the red, where the reflection would line up with his chest, like yes bb you are Dang b. and then we know how this scene continues, with the medical gear in the bg; fits the scene, him thrashing about and begging to leave, but everyone is telling him to STOP and pins him down

c. since we flip back to the au, this red is serving the two worlds imo - it’s being playful as a set for the Red episode, while at the same time, it’s a dialog; here, it represents the vehicle that will bring talay to puen (the secret island) but also the tides are preventing talay from crossing; d. he’s wearing the lighter end of the red palette; the boat is turned over, a visual representation of a STOP

e. he’s playing with the red controller… i love a show

f. the overflow of fan support (which, aww! deserved) has a specified cubby in his apartment, in plain sight; it’s not organized in any particular way but still there for him to see (there’s something to be said about his character but this post isn’t about that) g. then we get the bucket hat callback (SOBS) and we have the camera lined up like so - not only showing how much his heart misses talay, but the oncoming divide that the fans will create between them

h. back to the au, where puen’s wish is written in red i. when i say this show has layerssss

j. (SOBS AGAIN) no but really, when i heard his mom’s voice and he just STOPS; i thought to myself, “is2g if she’s wearing red, i will never speak ill of this show ever again" (pending transaction); there’s plenty of other posts about the art in the bg that you can find in the tag

k./l. now we get into the push and pull of getting them reunited; this is when the push and pull comes in the form of green vs red; the universe is both trying to bring them together and keep them apart; nature/set is organically telling them where they will eventually end up (glass house), but the artificial inserts of red also is STOPPING them from letting it happen

m. STOP interviewing!

n. STOP and take a break (au version) o. STOP and take a break (ou version)

p. the green vs red continues (outside edition)

q. red vs green (inside edition), but this is where the visual dialog really stands out; here, the tim horton’s Red is evenly halved with the green wall, representing the turmoil talay is in r. we switch to where puen’s voice is coming from, where the green starts to outweigh the red

s. the close up now positions talay to have the plants in the bg as he hears puen’s speech confirm his true feelings for him t. without saying a word, talay rushes back to the theater and we see him physically abandon red

u. i love a good wardrobe choice; something something when a person embodies a house v. the lamp speaks for itself *shoves mic at it*

w. just wanted to point out that the last time we were in this glass house in the au, puen was sitting in that corner with his apology; intentional or not, i think it’s lovely that the hint of Red is in the same place x. he STOPS (and i CRY)

y. when doubt creeps in and he thinks it’s still tess, i love that red is still peeking through; literally STOPPING him from believing who is in front of him and almost leaves z. “ai DANG” (and then my soul left my body and the shell of user talaypuens writes this post)

bonus: this can be interpreted in two ways - either they are recreating a piece of the au in their own personal space or we treat it as the visual dialog (that it’s both Puen and it’s a warning… to STOP??)

sign on the line 'cause you're running out of time

a/n: a scene from watt/hadestown (but i go off on too many tangents in brackets)

riley steps forward. 'she can't go. she signed a contract. she belongs to the team.'

kate stares between eva and riley, and back to eva. "is it true?"

they speak in unison. 

"she does." "i do."

(kate thinks, sometimes, about eva and 'i do's and their wedding song. this is not the 'i do' she wanted. this 'i do' she dreamed of only in her nightmares, on the track to here, this hell.)

"i can't leave the team," says eva, "i signed. 90k, my scholarship, for me to be on the team. climatology, kate! any way the wind blows," she sings bitterly.

"you can't leave- please not you- not you too-" comes kate's response, words spilling, falling from her lips, the same ones she said to chess before she left and never came back and now eva is going too- there isn't even a promise to skype, to keep in touch, to let her follow- "come home with me," she begs, "we can fix it-" 

(she knows they can't. riley is the richest girl in the area. the school can't afford to lose her. 90k scholarship, fancy gym- giles corey would bend over backwards for this girl.)

eva laughs sadly. "you don't know what it's like to be hungry." 

(i have worked so hard for so much less, eva thinks, remembers being unable to study for college because she was always working, how the stress got to her. thinks about how annleigh said kate would make her feel alive- but she can't quite remember how it felt. being a tiger has dulled her inside. riley is rich, and she knows how to use the money and power she has- a world where all the wrong kids keep getting all the nice things, she thinks wildy for a moment, watching kate stare at her brokenly, and she loves kate but sometimes she doesn't get it, lost in her music, lost in her grief.)

from the side, cairo watches. 

(the memory of seeing eva flashes through her head. up on top for spring, above and away from this basement, pouring drinks for everyone in the sunshine. kate had cried, "she will always fill our cups," a praise, a challenge, a reassurance to the girl next to her, staring at this bringer of life with skepticism. cairo had noticed, and looked directly at this girl, hungry and tired, and chimed in with "i will," watching her face grow hopeful. kate grinned, strummed her song and toasted, "and we will always raise them up!")

(growing up, despite appearances, kate never hated cairo. "i'll play my song and you and riley can kiss and make up," she told cairo as a child. cairo looked at this mortal girl, fingers red from holding guitar chords, and scoffed a disbelieving "sure.") there was a frenemy sort of passive-aggressiveness between kate and cairo, and out of all the gods, cairo was one of the rare few she trusted to help. like now.

(she thinks to annleigh turning to her, looking haunted, saying that cairo and riley were behind chess's death, and her immediate reaction being to defend cairo- "cairo never hated chess!")

kate turns her head to the side, and cairo, lost in the tumultuous thoughts of an immortal who has lost so many (her mind, right now, is thinking of farrah) looks up. "cai," kate pleads, and cairo steps forward, into the dull glow of riley's basement, so different from sunlight above. riley's voice hums, a calming technique cairo taught her long ago, and cairo can nearly hear the words with the tune. "please forgive me for doing what's best for you," echoes riley's voice in her head, sad and desperate.

"riley," she starts, and her friend looks to her. riley's hands are shaking, something cairo remembers from fourth grade. "make this easier" riley sings softly, voice trembling, and looks at her.

"eva means nothing to me!" says riley, defensive, mind whirling with 'cairo must think i have a crush on eva or something and now she hates me just like i got mad at farrah when cairo started spending so much time with her but farrah was bad for her they kept getting drunk and please forgive me for doing what's best for you i love you i love you i love you please she means nothing to me it's always been you-'

and maybe the two of them know each other too well, maybe they're too in sync, because cairo looks at riley and sees how much riley cares for her, and also thinks of farrah, and the suspicions she has, and her heart breaks because she knows how to fix this and she doesn't want to do it.

"i know," cairo says (reassuring, i care for you too, do this to please me) and then, "but she means everything to her."

riley is beset with phantoms that take cairo's voice and face and rip them off, because suddenly, even though she is looking at her best friend, all she can see are ghosts.

chess floats near her face, and riley can almost feel her nonexistent breath beside her cheek. "damned if you don't", she sings, hauntingly persuasive. let them go. the guilt claws at riley's chest. she can't breathe. 

chess then glares at farrah as her double braids flop onto riley's head. with fake cheer, she somersaults through the air and grins at riley upside down. "damned if you do!" mocking, taunting. you can't win.

clark appears, broods by her side. choruses with the other two before they fade- "whole damn nation's watching you."

even as the apparitions subside, drifting in front of her instead, their song continues around riley- "what you gonna do when the chips are down, now that the chips are down?"

"here's a little tip," farrah hums, sing-song, and a bottle of belladonna wine appears in her hand.

"word to the wise," sighs chess, and suddenly her hair is filled with poppy red, flowers blooming and covering the blood from an inconspicuous stab hidden beneath her jacket.

clark, instead, seems to be spiralling, twisting the ring around his finger until it warps into a bloody knife. "here's a little snippet of advice," he sings.

three fates, always singing in the back of her mind, in front of her vision. here, they mock her. clark places the knife he is twisting before riley, and it hovers there as the spirits disappear. "men are fools, men are frail, give them the rope and they'll hang themselves."

Authors Note: im sorry i haven’t been posting for a while my peeps its just ive had a lot on my plate atm and im just trying to sort thru that stuff now. but i will keep trying to write all the requests its just you guys pls be patient with me i rlly do appreciate u guys and ur kindness thank you. hope you guys enjoy this! 

It was always killing him. That feeling inside where he had to make a decision. Let you suffer and give in to the temptations and selfish deeds of your love or take that all away so you wouldn’t have to endure the painful life of being with Remus. It made him heartbroken to have to think of calling the marriage off. All he wanted in life was to be with you for the rest of his life. 

He would lie awake at night, fighting with himself as he stared at your sleeping form. His heart rate quickened as he would glance at your chest, rising up slowly and then down. The way you mumbled in your sleep and clutched onto nothing. He adored the way your eyelashes kissed your cheeks a thing he too would like to do. He had to leave, but he didn’t want to. Yes, no. This was an ongoing thing day and night until he finally made the decision. 

You would catch yourself day dreaming about paradise with Remus as you looked at the ring Remus got you. The day was magical and the thought of declaring your love for one another sent you over the moon. You would call him yours one day. 

You gave a sigh as you looked at the delicate ring once more. “Oh Remus, what am I to do with you?”

Remus was sitting in his favorite chair reading a book. The room fell silent with no answer. As you looked at him you saw that he was tremendously focused in whatever he was reading, he was truly captured. 

“Love...love...Remus!”

Remus shook startled and blushed shyly, “yes darling?”

You chuckled lightly at his actions and smiled, “I was just saying how beautiful this ring is. It really is. Its so perfect, so dainty. Thank you.”

Remus felt bad. He felt guilty that he would have to drop the terrible news on you, especially that you were so excited for something like this. Remus stood up, closing his book and brushing his trousers. “Love?”

“Yes?”

He rubbed his hands and bit his lip, “I have to tell you something.” You were sitting as he motioned over to you. You felt odd and could sense something was wrong. You knitted your brows, worried. “Remus, dear, is there something wrong?”

Remus so badly wanted to tell you, “yes there is something wrong! With me!” but he didn’t have the courage. He didn’t have the guts to tell you that he was insecure and worried you wouldn’t really want to spend the rest of your life with him because of his issues with being a werewolf. 

“Yes y/n...I regretfully hate to tell you this but we cannot get married.” He uttered the treacherous words as he took a hold of your hands. 

You were shocked, thinking you heard wrong. You stood up suddenly and look confused, “what? Remus, why not?”

Remus didn’t think of an excuse or anything. “Um because I’m not ready to marry you y/n.”

Tears were starting to appear in your e/c eyes, “No, please, don’t say that. Did my brother and his dumb friends put you up to this. If so its not funny!”

Remus gulped and tried with all his might to hold back more tears, “Its true y/n. We cannot get married. We cannot be together no longer. I don’t...I don’t love you anymore.”

You had to take a seat and fell down on the couch. Your heart split into two, but your mind was racing with a million thoughts. “I , I don’t know what to say. I thought you loved me, I thought you wanted to get married. We’ve been through so much together! Even when you hated yourself I was there for you, always have! Why would you say this?”

Remus tried to hold back the tears. Biting his lips to stop them from quivering. He clenched his fists, trying to fight the black hollow feeling in his chest. All he wanted was to be with you, to hold you, to love you from now to forever. “I just...can’t y/n. I can’t.”

You were feeling so many emotions. You shook your head and just gave him up. Your voice was rough and shallow, almost a whisper. “You need to decide Remus do you want to change in mind or change your heart?” 

You were about to leave him a when Remus blurted out, “wait!”

“What Remus? What more can you say? What else do you want to tell me to break my heart more?”

Remus finally let the tears come out and he sat in his chair, pulling his locks and hating himself. He sobbed quietly, softly almost to himself. You just looked at him, irate but then realizing what the issue was. 

“The problem isn’t me...is it?”

Remus shook his head as he bit his lips.

You then realized it, he was trying to brake the engagement off because he was insecure. He hated himself more than anything. 

“Its because you are different.”

Remus didn’t want you to know this. He thought it would make him seem weak and you would hate him more. He shot up and looked all over your face, “no love its not what you think, its just-” He was a loss for words. 

You motioned to him and cupped his face, “I know you Remus, but you need to tell me. You need to open up to me, tell me the truth.”

It took Remus a little while and then he finally gave in, “I hate myself y/n. I hate what I am and I’m scared about frightening you or even worse hurting you. I can’t let that happen. You need to stay far away from me.”

You kissed him harshly, closing you eyes, feeling your eyelashes meet your cheeks. Your warm hands squished his cheeks to get him closer to you. Your tongue touched his for a moment. You felt complete and utter love for him. You didn’t care what he was, all you felt in that moment, all along was love. 

“I don’t care what you are Remus I could never hate you. I don’t mind that you are a werewolf. To me you are special and important. There of course will be trials along the way but together,” you laced your fingers with his. “We can do it. I just know it.”

Remus whispered, full of love for you as he rested his forehead against yours. “I’m scared love.”

“Its okay darling, we’ll go through it. We’ll make it.” 

Remus kissed you again, sweetly. You tasting cinnamon twists danish on his tongue from breakfast. 

“I love you so much y/n. Please forgive me for ever making you cry like that.”

“I do, but you gotta make it up to me.”

Remus got on his knees and grasped your hand in his, “my sweetheart, will you do me the honor of being my wife?”

You chuckled ans grinned, “I would love to...husband.”

If you make a flatbread and then cut it into strips like noodles, but it’s literally just flatbread. And then you combine it with amazing cooks veggies and meats and spices and...really good stuff. It’s really good. mm wow.
