complicated — hamzahthefantastic
1. pushing it down and praying
contains: a little cheating..smoking, some nsfw content but nothing crazy
summary: after half a year of no contact, you run into your ex at a party.
a/n: kinda got this idea from the lizzy mcalpine song bc i am obsessed with it. so listen if you haven’t lol. also i decided to split the fic but it’s only gonna be two parts!
it’d officially been six months since you and your ex boyfriend went no contact.
the first few months were hell for you.
of course, you went through the stereotypical phase of eating ice cream and crying to rom-coms directly after your break up. but that short-lived phase gradually shifted into one that was much more melancholic once the two of you decided to go no contact.
everyday that you woke up, you were engulfed by an emotional numbness. a dull pain that served as a constant reminder of your grief.
you were grieving what the relationship was and what it could’ve been.
you had always envisioned your future with hamzah in it which is why the lack of communication between the two of you left you absolutely soulless.
you had never experienced such an intense love before him. everything was picture perfect in the beginning. it was even better than the movies.
but after two years, the miscommunication between you to became destructive.
things that should have been minor disagreements escalated into full blown arguments. you’d yell over each other, ignoring each other’s feelings and growing overwhelmingly defensive.
eventually, it became exhausting. you were both so angry all the time and too stressed with work or school to address it properly.
ultimately, you two mutually decided to call it quits. additionally, you later agreed that going no contact would be the best option for both of you.
now, half a year later, you were finally trying to move on.
after reading an endless amount of self-help books, you learned that after experiencing every stage of relationship grief (which you had), you theoretically should be ready to search for love again.
despite your reluctance, your best friends had forced you to join all the dating apps- urging you to hook up with someone new to get your mind off your ex.
it took days of swiping left on men that were literally the epitome of a walking red flag for you to finally find a man suitable enough to go on a date with.
his name was matthew. he recently graduated from college and instantly started a 9-5 working in finance. he spent his free time hiking. he had a golden retriever.
he was kind. he was stable. but he wasn’t hamzah.
you two had gone on a few dates. you had even hooked up after a couple of them.
as guilty as it made you, each hook up was spent closing your eyes- imagining hamzah on top of you. that it wasn’t matthew deep inside of you but it was hamzah; the one that knew your body like the back of his hand and knew just how to please you every time.
you were giving your all to this “moving on” stage but you simply weren’t satisfied.
that being said, when matthew had asked you to attend an old friend’s party with him on your last date, you politely agreed.
now here you were, shuffling through a crowd of sweaty bodies with a man that barely knew you guiding you by your waist.
“how do you know the host again?” you ask, nearly yelling over the music that was blasting through numerous speakers.
“he’s a friend from my hometown, remember? from ottawa?”
“right, right. i remember now.” you look up at him. you did not remember.
you two make your way into the kitchen. he pours shots of vodka into red solo cups and hands one to you.
you feel the familiar burn of alcohol stinging your throat as you down the shot.
“you look gorgeous tonight by the way. forgot to tell you earlier.” he tells you, running his hand up and down your waist.
hamzah would’ve told you earlier. he would’ve been kissing up and down your neck before you even finished your makeup while getting ready. reiterating how beautiful you are each time his lips left your skin.
fuck. there you go again. comparing everything matthew said or did to hamzah.
he’s not in your life anymore, you think to yourself. it’s time to get over him.
“thank you.” you answer matthew, mustering up a smile.
“you ready to go meet my friends?”
“yeah, let’s go! i’m excited to meet them.” you were lying straight through your teeth. but you continued to put on this enthusiastic act simply because he was nice.
he leads you to the main room where you meet a couple of his hometown friends. one named kyle. another named josh.
they were essentially carbon copies of matthew. frat bros that grew up and became finance guys.
you quietly listen as the boys catch up on one another’s lives.
until something, someone, catches your eye.
hamzah. he was across the large room with his back faced toward you. but it had to be him.
you could recognize the shape of his shoulders and you knew that those dark curls stuffed under a camo hat could only belong to him.
you stomach drops. somehow, you had never ran into him since the breakup.
the sight of him mixed with the alcohol made you sick to your stomach.
“hey”, you tap on matthew’s shoulder. “i’m gonna go find a bathroom real quick.” you explain.
“okay, just come find me when you’re done.” he replies before resuming his conversation with his friends.
you turn around, walking in the direction of a long hallway that you knew must have a bathroom.
you turn the doorknob of the first door you find and miraculously, it is a bathroom.
you clutch onto the counter, letting out a sharp exhale.
one of your hands grips to your stomach while you continue taking deep breaths.
in for 4. hold for 7. out for 8. you repeat.
a breathing technique that hamzah had taught you.
you hear the doorknob rattle. before you can say anything, the door is being launched open.
“oh shit! sorry!”, you hear a familiar voice as the door is being pulled closed again. “wait- y/n?”
the voice belonged to mandy. hamzah’s bestfriend’s girlfriend. you forgot that her and martin were from ottawa. they must’ve known the host of the party.
she steps inside, shutting the door behind her.
“are you okay? what’re you doing here? i haven’t seen you in so long.” she pulls you into a hug.
“yeah i’m here with some guy i’ve been seeing. but i saw hamzah and just needed to take a sec.” you explain during your embrace.
she pulls away, looking in your eyes.
“did he see you?”
“no, he was facing the other direction.”
“oh okay”, she nods and looks down.
“yeah. i haven’t seen him since we ended things so, it gave me a bit of panic attack.” you chuckle awkwardly.
“i’m sorry, y/n. break ups suck.” she pauses, “when i went through my first break up, i saw my ex at an amusement park about a month after. and i got so upset, i threw up in front of one of those stupid basketball games where you can win a big teddy bear.”
you laugh at her story, “seriously?”
“yes! it was so bad, the worker ended up giving me one of those huge bears out of pity!” she exclaims.
once your laughter dies down, mandy breaks the silence once again.
“he still talks about you, you know. every once in a while.”
every once in a while. you had thought of him every single day.
“every once in a while?”
“yeah. seems like most of the time it’s too hard for him to talk about. but sometimes, he can’t help himself.”
maybe he did think of you as often as you did.
“anyway”, she continues, “whose this new guy?”
she smirks teasingly.
“ugh. mandy, he’s so boring! but he’s so nice! he’s just- he’s nothing like hamzah. i don’t know- he’s really sweet, it’s just not, exciting? i guess?”
she nods. “well, if you want my advice..i say you shouldn’t stay with someone just because they’re nice to you. a lot of people are nice. only a few people will make you feel ‘sparks’ or whatever.”
you nod understandingly.
god you missed talking to her.
“i gotta get back to martin but if you want to talk to hamzah, he went out on the balcony. and let’s not have to run into each other at a random party to catch up again, ‘kay? text me.”
“okay.” you hug her tightly, “we’ll go for coffee soon.”
she smiles before exiting the bathroom.
you look into the mirror, trying to decide if going out on the balcony is a good idea.
“fuck it.” you whisper to yourself.
you didn’t know when you’d ever get the opportunity to speak to hamzah again. you had to go out on that balcony.
you walk out of the bathroom, sneaking past matthew who was still deep in conversation.
turning the corner past the main room, you find the sliding glass door to the balcony.
there he is. alone. sat on the small balcony, lighting a joint that hangs between his lips.
with his camo hat he wore a pair of dark wash jeans and white t-shirt.
you take a deep breath before reaching to slide open the door.
his head instantly whips towards you, his eyes widening a bit.
“hi.” you break the silence. you feel awkward. what are you supposed to say to someone you’ve been completely heartbroken over for the last six months?
“hey.” his eyes soften as he speaks.
“i, um- ran into mandy. she told me you were out here.” you explain to him.
he nods slowly. “come sit.” he pats the space on the floor next to him.
you do as he says. plopping onto the ground and pulling your knees to your chest.
he takes a drag from the joint between his fingers before pulling it out and handing it over to you. you two had shared a joint countless times during your relationship, making the action feel natural.
you bring the joint to your lips, sucking on it for a few seconds before blowing out the smoke and handing it back to him.
“how’ve you been?” he asks.
his voice was calm. you wondered how he could act so nonchalant in this situation.
“i’ve been okay. school’s been stressful.” you say, trying to avoid ranting about the emotional turmoil you’ve experienced since you two separated. “how about you?”
“good. just working a lot. martin and i upload multiple times a week now and run the merch ourselves so it’s been busy, but it’s fun.” his face lights up as he talks about it. he’d always been passionate about his career.
“that’s great, hamzah. i still remember when you had him up on that cracked screen just to have him on the pod.” you laugh.
“oh god, it was a shit show trying to get that thing to run properly.” he chuckles at the memory.
it falls silent for a moment.
“you still gonna become a journalist?” he asks, cocking his head to the side while looking at you.
“that’s the plan, yeah.” you answer.
“good. you were always good with words.”
“yeah?” you smile.
“of course, it’s why i was always calling you smarty pants.”
you chuckle at the nickname you’d forgotten about.
“i thought you were calling me that because of my attitude.” since childhood, you were teased for being bit of a know it all.
“i mean- yeah that was part of it.” he laughs, “but it was mostly because of that big brain of yours.”he taps his pointer finger to your temple.
“well, i don’t feel very smart these days.” you admit. “my grades have been slipping.”
“seriously? how come?”
“just had a rough last couple months.” you try to remain vague.
“your new guy not keeping you happy?”
your eyes widen. how did he know about matthew?
“did you see me with him inside?”
“yeah. i was about to walk into the kitchen when i saw you two together.”
you exhale deeply. “oh, uh. sorry about that.”
“answer my question, y/n.” his voice was low, serious.
“what?” your voice tinged with confusion.
“are you happy?”
you think for moment. you could lie, tell him you’re happy, let him believe that you’ve moved on. but everything in you wants to be honest with him.
“i’m trying to be.” you respond quietly before taking the joint from his hands and up to your mouth once again.
his eyes were glued to you as pushed the smoke from your mouth, like he was studying your face.
“that guy’s not right for you.” he shook his head as he spoke.
“hamzah, you don’t know him.” you’re not sure why you feel the need to defend matthew but you do.
“i can see what kind of guy he is—the kind that can’t even begin to grasp the complexity to you.” he explains.
“you’re high, hamzah. and you’re jumping to conclusions.”, you shift your position on the ground, “based on looks, might i add. didn’t they teach you not to do that in elementary school? the whole don’t judge a book by its cover thing? did you tune that part out?” you say as you stand from your spot. it pained you how well hamzah could read people- how accurate his description of matthew was.
“baby all this rambling makes it seem like you’re avoiding the truth—that he’s not good enough for you. and you’re not happy. i mean has he even noticed how long you’ve been gone?”
you forgot how stubborn this man could be.
you let out a defeated sigh. “it’s none of your business, really. and you’re right, i’ve been gone too long. i should get back to him.”
you steal the joint from his hand and take one last drag before you start to walk back towards the sliding glass door. you hear hamzah rise to his feet behind you.
“y/n, wait.”
you turn around, facing towards him again. “yeah?”
“i’m sorry. i shouldn’t have said that.” he apologizes.
“s’okay.”, you shrug your shoulders. “it was nice running into you.”
he nods agreeably.
you turn back around, beginning to accept that this was it. your last few seconds with him before you were back to no contact.
your hand reaches the sliding glass door, about to pull the door open when you hear hamzah’s voice once again.
“y/n, don’t go.”
don’t go.
“what?” you question, furrow your eyebrows.
he takes slow steps toward you, ditching his joint by throwing the remains of it to the floor.
he keeps walking towards you until you’re just a foot apart. he grabs your hand, pulling you to him and shifting your bodies so your lower back rested the black metal railing of the balcony as he stood directly in front of you.
his face was inches from yours. you could so easily lift your head and kiss him.
“come back to my apartment with me.” he whispered.
“why would i do that?” you replied, feeling the pace of your breath quicken due to the close proximity.
“because you miss me.” the corner of his mouth upturned into a cocky smirk. “and i miss you.”
you were speechless. all you could do was stare into his eyes, trying to decipher whether or not those words had actually just left his mouth.
you swallow harshly before speaking, “i’m here with someone else, hamzah. i’m going home with him.”
you try to stand your ground, but god you wanted to give in.
he scrunches his nose and shakes his head as he places his hands on the metal railing behind you, trapping you between his arms.
“but he doesn’t know you like i do.”
before you can respond, you feel his fingers brush your hair away from the side of your neck.
he places his hands on waist as his head falls to your neck, his plump lips hovering above your skin. your head instinctively leans to the side, giving him full access.
“does he know how much you like being kissed right here?” he whispers softly, feeling his lips move on your skin as he speaks.
he presses his lips to place where your neck and shoulder meet, remembering how much this spot had an effect on you.
you shut your eyes in utter satisfaction. you hated how much of an effect he had on you.
you bring your hands to his neck, then weaving your fingers through his curls as he continues kissing, sucking, and nipping at the sweet spots on your neck.
his hands float down, gripping onto your hips- another minuscule touch that he knew drove you crazy.
with his hands on your hips, he pulls your bodies closer. suddenly, the thought of matthew has completely vanished. you’re completely caught up in hamzah, and it felt so good- indulging in his recognizable scent and familiar touch.
you let out a soft moan as his hand falls to your ass, grabbing it shamelessly.
“hamzah, hamzah— i can’t, we can’t do this.” you say breathlessly, using your hand to tap on his chest.
hamzah steps back, his breath unsteady as watches you carefully, his gaze lingering on your lips. for a moment, you think he isn’t going to say anything— that he was just going to turn around and walk away.
but then he leans, his voice low “meet me outside in five.” his tone carrying both a question and a promise.
you feel a rush of nerves as he walks away, opening the sliding glass door and slipping back into the crowd.
you stay out there for a moment, catching your breath.
you shouldn’t go. you know you shouldn’t.
but you couldn’t stop thinking about the way he looked at you.
next part: with you all night
a/n: yuppppp part two coming very very soon and it’s gonna pick up right where this leaves off. sorry if this is long and boring, tbh i just needed something to distract myself from everything going on lol…k bye muah

November 22, 2023
Written by TMZ team
Her Royal Highness, Princess Y/n of Cambridge as well as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex made a surprise appearance at the Vancouver Canucks game last night.
The Princess has been on quite the anticipated tour, starting in Ottawa this past spring, heading east then ending in Victoria where she'll leave for later today.
Before the game the prince and princess had dropped the puck at the ceremonial puck drop, or rather not dropped the puck as Prince Harry had to be told to.
But it wasn't the prince's embarrassing story that's making headlines today, it's the Princess of Cambridge leaving with the Canucks captain, Quinn Hughes.
Hughes is an American hockey player, a couple years younger than our princess, but nonetheless we would love this couple together.
We know King Charles is never one to come become his children and love, we can only assume the King will be even more supportive than he was with the Duchess of Sussex. Hughes has never been married and on paper would make a great fit for our outgoing and adventures princess.
-
Quinn was on FaceTime with his brothers, they were in a hotel room in Michigan just having come back from their morning skate. Luke happened to go on his phone and see articles about his brother and the princess.
"Were you ever gonna tell us your dating a princess?!"
"We're not dating. That was my first time meeting her." The oldest said, rolling his eyes slightly, though his brothers ignored his obvious annoyance and continued their questions.
"And she came home with you?!" "Damn, Quinny!"
Rubbing his hand over his face, Quinn defends himself, "Shut up. It wasn't like that. We just talked, and got to know each other."
“Yeah? ‘Got to know each other’ how?” Jack said in his usual teasing voice with a smirk on his face.
“I don’t know, just talked- she’s coming out to Seattle in a couple days and-” “Shit! No way, dude.” Luke came into frame now, sitting next to Jack on the hotel bed. Jack elbowed Luke slightly, telling the boy to give him space before he looked back at Quinn on the screen, “And how exactly did you pull this off?”
“I have no idea, she was just waiting outside the dressing room after the game and asked me out. It was a little awkward ‘cause her security guys were right there the whole time.”
“In your apartment?” “No Lukey, outside the dressing room. They were outside the apartment the whole night though.” Jack’s head shot up at this, “She stayed the night?!”
“Yeah, but nothing happened. I’m not you.” “Fuck off.” “We talked all night and we watched a couple movies.”
Jack and Luke seemed to have got, maybe not exactly what they wanted, but got out all the questions they wanted to ask out.

Pairing: Fraser Minten x fem!reader
Warnings: fluffyyyyy, one kiss (I think), one swear
Summary: Y/N stays over at Fraser's for the first time after their usual Hockey Night in Canada Saturday date
Notes: Thank you so much for the request! I love writing for Minty and there is a lack of Minty content on here. Hope you enjoyed!! Prompts 35: "That's my girl" and 39: "You're blushing" "No I'm not". I also made up the entire game except for the misconducts that were given in an actual Florida-Ottawa game last fall.

As per weekly Saturday tradition, Y/N and Fraser watch whatever hockey game is on TV. Both avid hockey fans and players, they both grew up watching Hockey Night in Canada, rooting for their teams with unabashed pride; Fraser for Vancouver and Y/N for Winnipeg. Occasionally, their hockey-watching dates are over FaceTime when Fraser is out of town for games and he often falls asleep, his phone dying overnight.
Tonight, however, isn’t one of those nights. The Blades played a rare Saturday matinee game, ending just before four. This gave the couple time to make dinner before the start of the game. His billet family is away visiting relatives for the weekend, so it’s just the two of them. They settle in for the game with plates of spaghetti and salad. Ottawa is playing Florida tonight.
“This should be interesting.” Y/N comments, “nothing good ever happens when the Tkachuk brothers are on the ice together.”
“Very true. How many fights do you think will happen?” Fraser asks, half-Joking, half-serious.
“Oh, easily three or four.”
The game starts off fairly uneventful. No goals from either team and only a penalty or two. But you can tell the teams are chippy with each other. It's the start of the second when things finally amp up. It starts with a slash to the shins of Jakob Chychrun from Nick Cousins, sparking Brady Tkachuk to get involved. The refs are able to break it up before anything exciting happens. There is a pair of goals in the last 10 minutes of the first, so the teams are tied heading into intermission. The second follow is much of the same pattern; a goal for each team, a few minor penalties, and one scuffle. They had barely taken their gloves off before the refs broke it up, boring.
“ Boo.” Fraser says to the TV, “Let them fight, it’s more exciting that way.”
Y/N laughs and rolls her eyes. But he's not wrong, “You just like to see Matthew stir shit up.”
“You've got me there.”
It's in the dying minutes of the third one Fraser gets his wish. A cheap shot from Carter Verhaeghe sends Parker Kelly into the boards awkwardly. He doesn't get up as both teams end up in the corner. Claude Giroux tries to pull Parker away from the fight. The rest of the guys grab each other and start fighting, well most of them anyway. Brady and Matthew are both in the mix. Helmets are off, gloves and sticks are scattered on the ice and the refs are circling. Parker got some help getting to the bench and is getting checked by a trainer. The fight goes on, eventually guys are in headlocks, jerseys are half off, and others are piled on the ice, still swinging punches. The refs break up the fight, sending the guys towards penalty boxes before dishing out the penalties.
“Every player on the ice gets a 10-minute misconduct, except for the goalies and Ottawa number 27.”
Both Fraser and Y/N are staring, absolutely dumbfounded. Almost never do 10 players get game misconducts.
“Well, there's the entertainment for the night.” Y/N quips.
The last few minutes pass quietly, the benches are looking very bare, five guys gone from one side and four from the other. Fraser has nodded off by the time the game ends, and Y/N isn't far behind. She turns off the TV and folds the blanket that she used. She sighs tiredly, looking around the dim room. Fraser’s half-asleep on the couch, all sleep-warm and face cast with shadows from the kitchen lights. Y/N moves about the room, gathering her bag and phone. She smiles softly, love in her eyes as she looks as Fraser. She wakes him gently, prompting him to go to bed.
“Just stay.” Fraser mumbles sleepily, yawning.
“I…I don’t know.” Y/N hesitates, wanting to say yes.
“Please.” He interrupts, giving Y/N a soft, pleading look.
Y/N stays quiet for a minute, reaching out to brush a piece of hair off of his forehead, “Ok. I’ll stay.”
“That’s my girl.”
Y/N flushes, turning shy all of a sudden. She looks away, avoiding his gaze. They haven’t slept over at each other’s places yet, and it makes Y/N’s cheeks warm.
“Why’d you get shy?” He asks as they walk to his room.
“What? No I didn’t”
“Yes, you did. Look, you’re blushing.” He grins at her, poking her cheek.
“No I’m not.”
“Yes, you are. And it’s cute.”
Y/N gives him an exasperated look, she will never admit it but Fraser is right. It’s their first night sleeping over together so it takes an extra few minutes to get everything sorted. She is a little jittery, nervous to share Fraser’s bed with him. Her brain goes into overdrive as she tries to avoid making things weird. Fraser gives her a shirt to sleep in and he pulls on a pair of sweatpants. They stand on opposite sides of the bed, unsure of how to proceed. Sure, they have cuddled before, but usually that was on the couch or her cramped twin bed at school. Fraser climbs in, throwing back the covers and he holds his hand out for Y/N to grab. She takes it climbing into the other side. He pulled the covers over them, rearranging his pillow for optimal comfort. Y/N does the same, relaxing more as the minutes go by. Fraser reaches over and shuts off the lamp, sending the room into darkness. By the light of the moon, they face each other. Fraser pulls Y/N closer, giving her a sweet kiss on her forehead before tucking her into his chest. Before long, the couple has drifted off, wrapped up in each other’s arms like it's the most natural thing in the world.

Back to You - Matthew Tkachuk x Jessie (ofc)
gif from @drysaladandketchup
Title: Back To You
Author: Tory / @tkwrites
Relationship: Matthew Tkachuck x Jessie (ofc)
Warnings: Swearing, lots of flirting. Slow burn. Smut at the end: fingering (f receiving), oral (f and m receiving).
Summary: Jessie and Matthew meet at a New Years Eve party and form an instant connection. When a fire rips them apart, can fate bring them back together?
Word Count: 12,700
Comments: This is my entry for @wyattjohnston‘s winter fic exchange written for @luvsherleafs
This is by far the longest piece I’ve written for Tumblr. I had a really clear vision of where I wanted it to go, and I eventually got it there. In the end, I’m so proud of how it turned out. I hope you enjoy, and would love to know what you think.
Many, many thanks to Mari @eyesthatroll and Bre @fallinallincurls for looking this over and assuring me it wasn’t garbage when I was in the trenches of writing.
Me and you We were a strange situation And kissing you Felt like Christmas Vacation An exciting place to escape Sometimes I wish that I could've stayed Cause you were my favorite Holiday -Christmas Vacation by LØLØ
Back to You
Matthew couldn't tear his eyes away from her and knew he wasn't the only one.
With dark hair cascading down her back in a long, shiny waterfall, big eyes and a plump little mouth that looked just made for kissing, she was the kind of classic girl next door people wrote into movies and books for the hero to find his way back to.
He especially liked what she was wearing. Bare legs weren’t really something he would advise at two hours to January in Ottawa, but at least it wasn’t a mini skirt like most women were tugging at constantly. Her shorts had a gold stripe on the sides that caught the flashing lights, as if they might have once been extravagant tuxedo pants tailored explicitly to show off her curvy legs. Her dark shirt had flecks of something metallic in the fabric - a wrapped and tied number like he’d never seen before.
Laughter was all over her face as she danced with the people around her. Slamming her foot (clad in gold oxfords) down with the beat before circling her hips in time with the music.
“Do you need a towel, man?”
“What?” Matthew asked, pulling his eyes away to look at his brother.
“I asked if you needed a towel,” Brady repeated, failing to keep the teasing smile off his face, “for the drool.”
Matthew flipped him off, and Brady laughed.
“Go talk to her,” he encouraged, pushing Matthew off the bar stool. “I’m sick of watching you sit here and stare at her. Go do something about it.”
He hesitated. It hadn't been that long since he’d broken up with Heidi.
“Go,” Brady repeated, shoving him across the walkway onto the dance floor. “Move on.”
Although he wasn't sure if he was ready to meet someone new, Matthew knew Brady was right. He’d be kicking himself come morning if he let a woman this good looking go without at least shooting his shot.
As he weaved through the crowd of dancers, his competitive drive growled in his chest, pleased. He’d be damned if he let someone else get to her first.
“Your admirer is coming this way,” Roger said, nodding to someone over Jessie’s shoulder.
She glanced over. A tallish guy with curly hair was walking right at her, a determined intensity all over his handsome face. Her gaze swung back to Roge, eyes wide.
“Just letting you know so you can prepare,” he said with a wink. “I told you those shorts would bring all the boys.”
Although she'd made them for the occasion, she didn't think they would pull the amount of attention they were getting. Her clothes often garnered a lot of lingering glances, though they usually came from other women.
Someone tapped on her shoulder and she turned.
The same guy was standing in front of her. He was much taller up close, had light eyes, and his hair looked like it might be blonde. It was hard to tell under the dim dancefloor lights.
He flashed her a charismatic smile. The gap between his front teeth only added to his charm.
“Can I buy you a drink?” he asked, leaning in and yelling to be heard over the music.
Jessie wasn’t generally the type to accept drinks from random strangers, but this guy was hot, had nice style, and of all the dudes that had stared at her that evening, was the first one to do something about it.
“Sure,” she yelled back.
“Wanna go to the bar?”
After she nodded and they started walking through the mass of dancers, she glanced over her shoulder. Roge lifted his phone out of his pocket and shook it at her. His flashlight turned on.
She sent him a text about going to the bar and his flashlight, made sure the ringer was turned on, and slipped her phone back into her shorts pocket. Another good thing about making her own clothes: she could make the pockets as big as she needed.
Matthew couldn’t keep the smug smile off his face at the glares and disappointed looks that followed them to the bar.
“What'll you have?” the bartender asked as they came to a stop in the corner of the club. It was a bit quieter.
“A mojito, please” she said, before gathering her hair into a fist behind her and running her hand down the length of it.
Momentarily distracted by her actions and the flash of dark red, the bartender had to ask him again what he wanted.
“Beer would be great,” he said, flashing a bright smile, “whatever light you recommend.” Glancing back at the girl, he ran a hand through his hair to make sure it wasn’t doing something stupid, and said, “I'm Matthew, by the way. “
“Jessie. Are you from around here?”
“No, but my brother lives here. You?”
“My family is from here, but I'm usually in the states.” she said, watching the bartender muddle the mint in her drink. He didn’t seem to be doing anything funny with it.
“Yeah? Which one?”
“New York. Well, technically New Jersey, but I study in New York.”
“What do you study?” Matthew asked, lifting his beer bottle to his lips.
“Fashion.”
“I should have guessed,” he said.
“You should have?”
“Yeah. You have great style.”
The smile that spread over her face made him want to kiss her.
“What do you do, Matthew?” she asked, as she brought the black straw in her drink to her mouth. She caught it between her tongue and teeth before her lips wrapped around it.
His train of thought ran off the rails with visions of her mouth wrapping around other things.
Thankfully, autopilot kicked in and saved him from looking like a total creep, “I play hockey.”
“Seriously?”
He nodded. “I'm based in Florida.”
“Why the hell are you in Ottawa for New Years,” she asked, aghast, “when you could be somewhere warm?”
“We played here yesterday, so my family are all staying with my brother. Why are you here?”
“My dad grew up here, and wanted us to experience the joys of the frozen tundra at Christmastime,” she said with a long sweep of her hand, as if gesturing to the whole country.
He laughed again, and held her eye contact. It was so intense, she was the one to break it.
“Anyway,” she flipped her free hand, “what do you do for fun?”
“I honestly don’t have that much free time, but I always enjoy a good libation,” he said, holding up his bottle.
A wide smile spread over his face when she clinked her glass against it as she said, “amen.”
“And I like to hang out with people and I play a lot of other sports.”
“I will never understand why athletes always want to play other sports. It’s not like I sew upholstery when I’m not making clothes.”
He laughed, loud and genuine, and Jessie felt her heart flutter a little.
“It can be hard to turn off the competitive drive, so it helps to have somewhere to channel it. So did you make these clothes?” he asked, nodding at her outfit.
“Yeah. I found this gold fabric,” her fingers ran down the stripe on her left hip, “and fell in love with the idea of tuxedo shorts for New Years. I play around with a lot of menswear styles.”
“I like them,” he said. If he, by some miracle, got nominated for another award, maybe he would get a gold striped tux made.
“We have to wear suits to all of our games, so I’m always looking for something new and interesting,” he said.
The conversation lulled for a moment, and he continued, “what do you do for fun?”
“I also enjoy a good libation,” she clinked her glass against his again, “and I like to play tennis and I love movies.”
The rest of the night was spent in that little corner of the bar, talking and laughing - Matthew was funny. Quick with a movie quote and a sarcastic comment in her ear. She told him about coming to the club with her cousins, only one of whom she really knew, and he told her about coming with his family. A younger, married brother, and a sister still in college.
He refreshed their drinks and marveled at finding a woman who could keep up with his banter, genuinely laughed at his jokes and seemed interested in him as a person rather than as Matthew Tkachuk.
They talked about hockey, she knew some as her dad was Canadian, but not a lot, then about fashion.
She admitted one of the reasons she’d said yes to his drink had been his pants.
“Listen, more American men need to understand how many more girls they’d get if they just wore the right pants!”
He cocked an eyebrow.
“Your pants are fitted properly so I can see your ass and your thighs, and it makes you about a thousand times more attractive.”
A cocky smile spread over his face, “Oh, yeah?” he asked, leaning into her space.
She gulped, “yeah. If more men wore pants like yours, they wouldn’t be single.”
He stayed in her space, and her eyes darted to his lips. He licked them, just to see what she would do at the flash of his tongue.
Her eyes darted back to his and her cheeks pinked. He smiled.
The music changed to a slower, more house-style song he recognised. Jessie bumped her shoulders to the beat.
“Do you want to dance?” Matthew asked.
“Sure.”
They moved to the floor, and he watched, entranced as she swung her hips in rhythm.
When she turned around, pressing flush against him, his right hand immediately grasped her hip, as if that might provide some kind of grounding from the fluttering feeling in his chest.
It wasn’t like this had never happened - girls grinding up on him. It happened quite a lot, actually. Sometimes without any kind of consent. But this? Jessie? He couldn't get enough. She was pretty and they had the kind of instant chemistry you couldn't fake.
He found himself thinking about her beyond that night. A first since Heidi.
For her part, Jessie couldn't stand not touching him any longer. The chemistry between them was so palpable, she was surprised other club goers weren’t getting caught in it. Feeling him move against her made desire rumble to life in her belly, growling to be released.
They danced that way for - Matthew lost track of how many songs. She felt amazing pressed up against him. He was so in tune with how they moved together, the dancing felt like foreplay.
When the countdown to midnight began, she turned to face him. They were still so close - she could feel his body heat seeping through his clothing and into hers, see the way his button down was just starting to cling to his skin.
Matthew looked down at her, not hiding any of his interest. She looked back with so much hope and lust in her eyes, his stomach twisted.
“Three, two, one!” the crowd cheered.
He leaned down, then paused, “okay?”
Rising onto her toes, she closed the gap between them in answer.
All of their flirting was leading up to this moment, and Jessie wasn’t disappointed at all. It was as if everything around them faded into soft focus and the din of the crowd melted away. It was better than she could have imagined. His tongue brushed along hers, and heat flooded her stomach.
Matthew angled closer when her fingers slid into his hair. His hand splayed over her lower back. He wished he didn’t have this beer bottle so he could have both hands on her.
It went on and on for what felt like ages - a promise of things to come.
Someone cat called from nearby, and Jessie broke away, pursing her lips to hide how flustered she felt. At least he was as breathless as she was, his chest expanding to the confines of his shirt with every inhale.
They stared at each other for a moment longer, not quite engaged with the crowd, which was growing increasingly restless with the New Year in full swing.
She was debating between kissing him again, or asking if he wanted to leave all together when the lights went out, plunging them into total darkness.
The suddenness of it made her laugh. She thought it must be some kind of prank until all at once, a mono tone alarm started to scream. Lights began to strobe - harsh, bright flashes that instantly made spots appear in her vision.
The word “fire” was popping up in the crowd.
Just as he was starting to register what was happening, murky water cascaded from the ceiling.
The club was dissolving into chaos. Matthew snapped out of his reverie, and looked around for Taryn.
“I have to find my sister,” he told her.
As Jessie's face was illuminated by the flashing lights, she looked stricken and worried.
“I’ll call you, though!” he promised.
“But -” she watched him run off, knowing she hadn't given him her number. She didn't even know his last name.
“Jessie!” Roger yelled from somewhere to her left. Her eyes roved for him, and landed when he shouted again, waving his cell phone flashlight in his own face.
She ran to him, and they followed the swarming crowd outside.
To her complete surprise, smoke was pouring out of the building and the fire department was pulling up. She had been certain someone had pulled the alarm as a prank.
“Fuck it’s cold out here,” she said, wrapping her arms around herself, as if that would do any good. Her coat was inside, a pair of wool tights tucked in one of the pockets. She'd planned to put them on in the bathroom before they left.
“We should call it,” Lacey said. “Catch the next train. If we hurry we won't have to wait for another one.”
“But my coat’s in there,” Jessie complained. She hadn't made it, but she may as well have, she’d altered it so much. It was the best thing in her wardrobe.
“We’ll come back tomorrow,” Roger assured, “but Lacey’s right, we should get out of here. We’re soaked and it’s below freezing.”
It wasn't just the coat. She didn’t want to lose Matthew. She hoped she might run into him in the parking lot, but had yet to see him.
Roger and Lacey were right. Her wet clothing was already starting to freeze - stiffening and biting into her skin. Glancing around the crowd once more, she hoped she might see him, but there were too many people moving in too many different directions.
As Roger pulled her away, she hoped against hope the universe would bring them back together. It had been so long since she'd felt a spark like she had with him.
“Who was that girl you were kissing at midnight?” Taryn asked, her tone suggestive as she waggled her eyebrows at her oldest brother.
“Her name is Jessie,” he said, looking around for Brady. He finally spotted him with Emma and some of the Sens guys across the parking lot.
“Seemed pretty serious.”
Matthew rolled his eyes. “We got on, that’s all.”
“I’ve seen you look like that before, and that was not just getting on with someone,” Taryn argued. “I hope you got her number.”
“I did,” he assured, then stopped dead in their pursuit through the crowd.
Taryn ran into his back. “Matthew!” she complained.
He was too busy digging his phone out of his pocket to apologize or move out of the way. Thankfully, it wasn’t ruined. As he opened his recent contacts, though, he found his fear confirmed.
Taryn pushed on his back, “Matthew, move! I wanna get inside.”
The older brother in him took control, wrapping his arm around Taryn's shoulder to lead them to Brady and finally into the car to go home.
As they settled into the SUV, heat blasting to melt the ice that had formed in their hair and on their cheeks, Emma punched Matthew in the arm. “That was some New Year's kiss, Matty.”
The disappointment of reality bit into him, and he snapped, “I don’t want to talk about it.”
“Whoa,” Brady said in warning.
Matthew leaned forward, putting his head in his hands. The possibility of her was still buzzing on his skin.
The future was being ripped out of his grasp. How could so much hope be dashed so quickly? So completely? He'd been making plans in his head. Immediately, where they were going to spend the night if she was willing. Beyond that, how he would see her whenever he was in New York, and beyond that? Hopefully something that ended up with them together.
“Oh no,” Taryn whispered, her hands coming up to cover her mouth. “You didn’t get her number did you?”
He shook his head.
“Oh, Matthew,” Taryn said, laying a hand on his back, “I’m sorry.”
The rest of the night, he lay in Brady’s guest bedroom, Taryn in the bed next to his, and tried to relax. It wasn’t working. He could still feel the phantom of her grinding up against him, and if he thought about it too much, he got hard.
Opening Instagram, he typed “Jessie” into the search. There were pages and pages of results. He scrolled through, hoping he might see her face. When the photos started to blur together, he clicked off the app.
Feeling hopeless, he pressed the heels of his hands into his eyes. Jessie’s face was etched on the inside of his eyelids. He saw her smiling, heard her laugh ringing in his ears, felt her lips so perfectly fitted between his own. They should have been tangled up in bed together. The actuality of his loneliness was a slap in the face every time he turned over.
It was after four when he finally fell asleep.
He woke sometime around 10am when Taryn sat by his feet.
“Mom wants to know why you’re still in bed,” she said when he sat up, rubbing his hands over his face. “I told her you were hungover.”
“Thanks,” he said dryly.
“Listen, I heard you last night.”
His hands dropped and he gave her a suspicious look. “And what did you hear last night?”
She took a deep breath. “I heard you crying.”
A groan fell out of his mouth as his head tipped back. He didn’t even try to deny it. It hadn’t lasted long, the crying, but he hadn’t been able to stop it for a few minutes. He was sure Taryn heard his sniffling.
“Is this about that girl?”
“Listen, Taryn, I don’t want to -”
She cut in, “Matthew, I saw the way you looked after you kissed her. It’s the same way Brady looks at Emma.”
Shit. He was in deeper than he thought. And they hadn’t even slept together yet. He didn’t even know her last name. If he knew her last name, he’d be able to find her.
Letting his hands fall in his lap, he slouched over, and let the reality of what happened wash over him again. He would get over it eventually, but now? It felt too close to push aside.
Taryn’s hand came to rest on his knee, “I was thinking, what if she left something at the club? I mean, people must have left coats and things with the fire alarm. We could at least try. See if you can leave your number for her, or something.”
A spark of hope flickered to life in his chest. “Yeah, that’s a really good idea.”
Jessie wasn’t too surprised to see the tent in front of the club when they pulled up. The post on their Instagram page said they would be available for people to pick up their belongings all day. Two women were sitting there, bundled up to the hilt. As she got closer, she saw the propane heaters. At least that was something.
“How can we help you, darlin?”
“Yeah, I was here last night, and I hoped I could get my coat that I left with the coat check?”
One of the women stood, “what does it look like?”
“It’s a black wool trench, and it has sort of wavy lapels,” she demonstrated on herself. “There’s a pair of gray wool tights in the left pocket.”
She walked over to a rack behind their table.
The Club had seen better days, that was for sure. Some of the glass had been blown out from the heat, and there were charred bricks on the front from where the flames had licked out the windows.
“Is it condemned?”
“No, but it’ll take us a while to remodel, especially with the winter,” the other woman said, giving her a smile.
“Did they find out what caused it?”
“Not yet, but we’re pretty sure it was some faulty wiring.”
“Here we go. Is this it?” The other woman, the one with pink hair, turned the coat around.
Jessie smiled, relieved, “Yes.”
As she reached for the coat, she debated about the next part. What was the harm really? She knew she would be kicking herself all the way home if she didn’t.
“I know this is a little strange, but I met someone last night, but we were separated before we could exchange numbers, and I wondered if he’d come by?”
“I’m not sure. We’ve seen quite a few people today.”
“His name was Matthew, and he had curly hair, light eyes, and he was tall.”
They looked at each other, each shaking their head. “I don’t think we’ve seen anyone like that today.”
She wasn’t sure what she would have done if they had.
“Do you want to leave a note for him, or something?”
She chewed on her lip, petting the smoke soaked coat draped over her arm. If he happened to come by, it might work. But what if he didn’t? Or what if some other guy with curly hair came by, and they gave him her note?
She shouldn’t have even asked. It was fruitless. What did she expect? That he would just walk out of the building: here I am!
“No,” she said, defeated. “I was just hoping.”
“Well, love has a way of coming back when you least expect it.”
It felt like such a throw-away thing to say. “Yeah, I hope so,” Jessie said, turning back to her parents' car, parked in the lot.
Matthew walked up to the women sitting in front of the club. He knew he was used to the Florida warmth by now, and just despised the cold on principle, but sitting out here? In this? They were nuts.
“Hi, honey,” the older, motherly looking one greeted, “did you leave something here last night?”
Yeah, my future, he thought.
“No, I was hoping,” he reached up to scratch the back of his neck nervously. “I mean, I met someone here last night and I was -”
“Are you Matthew?” the other woman interrupted.
His eyes shot to hers. “Yeah,” he said, breathless with anticipation.
“Oh no,” the women looked at each other. One had her hand over her mouth.
“Someone was just here looking for you.”
Hope started hammering in his chest.
“Pretty little thing, lovely red hair.”
“Yeah,” his heart was running so fast he felt like he might be sick.
“I’m so sorry honey, we asked her if she wanted to leave a note or something, but she decided not to.”
Now he really was going to throw up.
They had been so close. So close to meeting again. Why hadn’t she left a note? Why didn’t he just get her number last night?
Because he’d planned on asking her for it in the morning.
“Well, thanks anyway,” he said, hand falling limply at his side.
“Good luck. I hope she finds her way back to you.”
“Thanks,” he said, turning back to the car. Taryn was watching with rapt anticipation. He shook his head and her expression fell.
**Nine Months Later**
For the first time since moving, the bright Florida sunshine didn't make Jessie smile as she got out of bed. That September morning, she woke up to an anxious fluttering in her chest, trying to tell herself it was going to be a day like any other. She would go to the shop and sew that new sculptural blazer for the window. She'd help Raul with his clients and do the same things she’d been doing every other work day for the past three months.
It didn’t matter that some of the Florida professional hockey team were coming in for suits for the new season. She’d already checked, and there wasn’t a Matthew on the books.
Even if he did show up, he had probably moved on. It was just her romantic streak that kept him alive in her memory.
After a few miserable, sulky hours on New Year's Day, Roger had finally suggested she look him up.
“I don’t know his last name, Roge.”
“Didn’t you say he plays hockey in Florida?” he’d asked, pulling out his phone. He found a roster for her to look through - all men in blue, none of them Matthew. There wasn’t even a Matthew on the team.
“I think it’s hopeless,” she said.
“Hold on, there’s another one.”
“Another what?”
“Another team.”
“Here, I think this is him?” he turned the phone around and Matthew was staring at her, a smug little smile on his face.
Her breath caught in her throat. His eyes were blue. And his hair was a dark blonde, with almost a gingery tone to it.
“Matthew Tkachuk?” she asked, trying to pronounce all the letters. It came out a bit of a garbled mess.
“Look him up on Insta.”
So she had. She found him easily. He was verified with over 150 thousand followers.
She messaged him, hoping.
Hey this is Jessie from last night before the fire stole our thunder.
He’d never even seen her message. She had checked every day for a while, then every couple of weeks until she'd all but forgotten about it, moving on with her life.
Pulling out her phone now, she scrolled down to the thread. The date was still staring at her, no read notifications in sight.
Matthew wasn't even all that great. That’s what she told herself every time she went on another failed date with some guy so boring she wanted to just drop off the chair and fall asleep on the bar floor. If she let herself believe he really was as charming and interested and built just for her as he’d seemed, she would never go on another set up or app date again. It had been the alcohol and the rush of the new year that had painted him in such rosy light. It was likely he was just another boring dude like all the rest.
The pink lace she put on under her clothes before going to work was for her, and she wasn’t hoping anyone would get to see it.
She absorbed herself with structuring the new women’s blazer all morning until the appointment at 2.
Matthew wasn’t entirely certain why he’d agreed to go with Benny that afternoon. He already had a suit guy in St. Louis. He didn’t need another one. But Sam was persuasive, a few other guys were going, and Matthew was always looking for something new. When you have to wear the same item of clothing over and over again, might as well make it something interesting.
Walking into the little shop, he could see why Sam liked it. There were racks and racks of interesting fabrics. Subtle and bold patterns and solid colors he never would have considered for a suit before.
As the other guys got to browsing, Matthew wandered over to the wall of photos. In every one, a short, dark haired man was posing with various people in beautiful suits. Sam was up there as were Barky and Bob. He didn’t know they came here too. Apparently, this was the place to be.
Something rustled in the back, and he turned. Nothing was there, but a glass cabinet that housed a display of cufflinks.
“Matthew?”
His head shot up.
A pretty young woman who wasn't in any of the photos was standing in the doorway behind the display case, holding up the heavy velvet curtain. He could see a row of sewing machines under her arm. She had on a blue skirt and a green blouse. A fabric flower was attached to her wrist, a porcupine of pins sticking out of it.
His breath locked in his chest. She was here. In Florida. She was in front of him. The girl from the New Years Eve party he couldn’t quite convince himself to let go of for half a season and the whole summer.
Her hair was shorter than it had been - ending at her collar bone - and a dark auburn red. He supposed it had probably always been that color. She had creamy pale skin with a dusting of freckles across her nose, and shit, had her eyes always been that green?
He’d never seen her out of that harsh club lighting, he realized. Of course she would be prettier in the daylight.
The murmuring behind him hushed into silence, and his mind went completely blank, as if he’d never had a thought in his life.
“Hey,” he heard himself say. The shock of seeing her was so intense, he couldn’t remember her name. He’d just been thinking about her last week after another failed third date.
Sam shot him a questioning look.
He was in shock. He was overwhelmed. He was… he was… he was acting like an idiot.
His heart thundered in his ears. She was looking at him like she was trying to figure out if he remembered who she was.
“Jessie,” she said hesitantly, pointing to her chest. “From New Years?”
Didn’t he remember? His face was branded into her memory. The dream of him - of them - roared to life in her chest unbidden. Her body reacted instantly, as if no time had passed.
Right. Jessie, Jessie, Jessie, he thought.
Cool. He needed to play this cool. “Oh, hey,” he said. “How’ve you been?”
As soon as it was out of his mouth, he knew it was the wrong thing to say. Hope fell right off her face. He saw the moment it happened, and it sliced through him like a knife to the gut.
Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
She wasn’t some old acquaintance he hadn’t seen in a while. She was the girl he kept coming back to. The one he thought about after failed dates or that relationship that started at the beginning of the summer only to fizzle out six weeks later. She was his, it might have been, girl.
The man walked in then, forcing her into the shop. “Ah, I see you have met Jessica. She just graduated from FIT in New York,” he bragged, “and is helping us expand into womens suiting. She’s also a marvelous tailor, so she’ll be helping with the suits as well. Jessica, these are the clients I was telling you about. From the ice hockey team. Good clients. They like interesting things.”
She painted a smile on her face that almost looked convincing. “I can’t wait to help.”
“You,” Raul said, “I don't know you.”
“Matthew,” he said, holding a hand out to the older Italian man. “Sam said you make the best suits on the eastern seaboard.”
Raul pulled out the leather bound book that served as his ledger, and flipped to the section Jessie had been looking at that morning, simply marked, Hockey.
“Last name?” he asked.
He spelled it out, then pronounced it, “Tkachuk. The T is silent.”
Raul nodded, noting the silent letter next to his name.
“Jessica and I will take your measurements,” he said, gesturing him over to the plinth near the mirrors surrounded by dark wood.
Jessie picked up a notebook and followed Raul. Matthew had definitely recognised her, he’d been shocked by her appearance, even. Then he treated her like…like a one night stand or an acquaintance he wasn’t quite sure he wanted to reunite with. It hurt more than it should have to have the things she was telling herself come true.
She had hoped Raul would let her help the other clients, but luck seemed to be against her. At least he hadn’t handed her the tape. She didn’t know what she would have done if her hands brushed against Matthew’s body. She already felt on edge just being in the same room as him.
“Very important to get the thigh measurement with these hockey players,” Raul was saying as he threaded a measuring tape around Matthews upper thigh. “Big legs.”
“It’s from all the skating,” Matthew said, almost out of habit.
Jessie was doing a very good job of not looking at him. She had a little notebook in her hands and she kept her eyes trained on it as she wrote down every body part and corresponding number Raul called out. Upper thigh, lower thigh, calf, hip to knee, knee to ankle. Matthew had been measured like this before, so he just stood still and let the man do his work.
“So, Jessie, right?” Josh asked, leaning onto one of the mirrors, nearby where she was standing, not quite in Matthew’s peripheral vision.
She hummed in agreement. Raul was still calling out numbers to her, and she couldn’t divide her focus that well.
“What brought you all the way down to Florida from New York?”
Matthew clenched his jaw to keep from telling Josh off. As much as he wanted it, he didn’t have any claim over Jessie.
“Um,” she said, still jotting numbers. She spared a glance at him. He had long, unruly, dark hair, dark eyes, and a goofy smile. She smiled back, “can you give me just a minute to finish up here?” she asked, pointing at Matthew’s stomach with the cap of her pen.
Josh blushed, “yeah, of course.”
She went back to her notebook, face impassive once more.
Josh stayed where he was.
“So Chucky, what do you think about the schedule this year?”
Matthew shrugged, then snapped himself back into place at Rauls reprimand. “Sorry,” he mumbled.
Jessie gagged internally. hoping that wasn’t really his nickname. Chucky was either a possessed doll, or a possessed rat mascot, neither of which she liked to think about for very long.
They continued to talk about something with their team. When she and Raul finished, she handed the notebook off to him, which he would transcribe into the ledger. He still didn’t trust her to do it the way he liked.
Matthew didn’t move off the plinth, but she turned to the other man, “sorry, what was your question?”
She sounded so polite, so formal. Sure, they’d only met that one night, but she hadn’t been guarded like this at that club in Ottawa. He supposed that was probably his fault. God, why was he such an idiot?
“I wondered what brought you to Florida. It’s a long way from New York.”
“Oh, the heat,” she said. “I was so tired of the north-east cold.”
“And you know Raul…”
“He and one of my mentors are great friends, and he got us in touch. I have some family down here, and wanted to live somewhere warm for a change. Raul wanted to expand into some womenswear, and tailoring happens to be one of my specialties.” She said it without much emotion. Just stating the facts. “We met, I made him and myself a suit to audition, and here we are.”
Matthew opened his mouth to say something about how he was glad she was here, but she walked away before he could force the words out.
Josh gave him a look that said something like, women, right?
Matthew walked away before he said something stupid.
“While I update the rest of your measurements, Jessica can help you with fabrics. She’s excellent with color. Jessica, why don’t you get the samples and help them pick out what they need.”
She nodded, went into the back and came out with five big binders. She set them on the table, and flipped some of them open.
She helped Reino pick out a dark teal, a blue and a few subtle plaids before moving on to someone else.
Matthew was the last at the table.
“What are you looking for?” she asked, trying to keep her voice and demeanor level. No need to let him know how her heart still pounded just looking at him when it was so obvious he didn’t care about her.
“I'm always looking for something interesting,” he said. “What would you suggest?”
Her eyes darted up to his face. His eyes were so blue - much more intense in person. He had the kind of eyes poets say hold summer skies and glacial lakes. It was the first time she really saw them, and they took her breath away.
“Well,” she forced herself back to work, “you could pull off almost anything with your coloring. How adventurous are you?”
“I’m willing to try anything once,” he said, trying to sound flirtatious. It just came off desperate.
She chewed on the inside of her lip. “How many suits are you looking for?”
“Eight,” he said.
He didn’t need eight suits. But if it kept him at this table for longer, he would buy as many as she would sell him.
“All for here?”
“For here?”
“To be worn here, in Florida? The others have mentioned needing some for travel.”
“Oh, I’ll need three or four for travel, three at least for the cold.”
They talked through colors. She opened a binder she hadn’t given anyone else. None of the other guys were as handsome, or seemed as adventurous with their style as Matthew.
“If you’re brave enough, I think this lilac would look really good on you,” she said, pulling the pastel fabric sample off the board and holding it up. He was more bronze than he had been when they’d met, but it would still look good when his summer tan faded.
“Okay,” he said. He trusted her style. He’d never worn lilac, but if she thought it would look good, he’d give it a shot.
Jessie got the feeling he was just agreeing with her to get this whole thing over with. Still, she couldn’t help pulling the best fabrics for him, even an expensive light blue linen blend that would make him look like Brad Pitt in Santorini. He didn't balk when she mentioned the price. He didn't even seem to notice.
“Chucky, how did you know Jessie?” Bennet said as they walked down the block to the public parking they’d all met at.
“A party,” he said, trying to sound non-committal.
People got into their cars, but before Matthew could leave, Benny came up to his driver's window. “You wanna tell us what’s going on?”
“You’re never this quiet,” Reino said from his place on Benny’s left.
Matthew sighed and got out of the car. This was going to take a while. Sam had always been a bit of a brother to him and he knew he wouldn’t let him go without an explanation.
“Jessie and I met last New Years Eve,” he said, crossing his arms over his chest and leaning against the hood of his car.
“Okay, and what did you do? Hookup and never call her again?”
“No!” He sounded too defensive, even to his own ears.
Reino raised an eyebrow, “so what happened?”
His hands raked into his hair so he didn't have to look at them as he told the story. “We met at this club in Ottawa, and we had this amazing connection. I've never felt anything like it before. Like, boom: Instant chemistry.” It felt even worse to say it out loud.
Both guys just waited.
“But the club caught fire.”
“Wait, what?” Benny asked. “Really?”
“I know, man,” Matthew said, throwing his hands up, “and I thought I had her number, so I left her to find Taryn, but I didn’t, and I couldn't find her after. I didn’t think I was ever going to see her again, and then, all of a sudden she was here,” he gestured in the direction of the shop, “and I just…”
“Fucked it?” Benny asked.
“Yeah.”
“So go back and talk to her,” Reino said, like it was the easiest thing in the world.
He scoffed. “What would I say? ‘Hey, sorry I completely forgot your name and treated you like our connection didn't matter, but I actually haven’t been able to stop thinking about you for the past nine months?’”
“Better than not saying anything,” Benny said.
Matthew shook his head, “I can’t go back in there.”
“Why not?”
“You didn’t see her face. There’s no way she wants to talk to me.”
A few weeks later, Jessie was piecing Matthew’s jacket from the blue linen in the back of the shop. The fabric was so light and delicate, she couldn’t even have music going while working with it. One wrong move and there would be pulled threads all over the place. She knew Raul would disapprove, but she gave herself twice the seam allowance to make sure she could finish the inside raw edges. Otherwise the fabric would start to pull apart - eventually, quite literally, fraying at the seams.
“Uh, hello?” someone asked.
She jumped and dropped the scissors. She let them clatter to the floor with a curse. She’d been so focused on the task at hand, she hadn’t heard the bell ring.
“One second,” she called, before securing her pattern with an extra pin, picking up the scissors and coming out to the sales floor.
“Hi, sorry about that. I got kind of in the zone. What can I do for you?”
It was one of the hockey guys. The one with strawberry hair. She couldn’t help but glance around him to see if he’d brought anyone with him.
She shouldn’t even be looking for Matthew, especially considering he'd ignored all of her phone calls about his suiting. All the same, seeing him again had awoken her longing in a way she couldn’t quite tamp down.
“Raul said I had some suits he wanted me to try on,” he said.
She asked his name, then went to the back to retrieve the garment bag. She remembered this one. She’d convinced him an oxblood red wouldn’t look too harsh with his coloring, and she was hoping he would like the results.
Giving him a pair of pants, she left him in the changing room while she cut extra threads on the inside of the jacket.
Immediately, she could see the pants were a smidge too loose. They talked about his preferred fit, and he avoided looking at her as she pinned the inner thigh. All men reacted this way, but to Jessie, this was all about the garment. As far as she was concerned, he was a mannequin under these clothes.
Finally, the questions that had been ruminating in her mind got the best of her. “So, did Matthew get traded or something?”
“Chucky?” he asked, surprised.
“I guess so.”
“No,” he was laughing as he said it, “he has seven more years on his contract.”
“Oh.”
“Why?”
“I’ve just called him a few times about measurements, or fittings, and he’s never called back or come in.”
“Really? He told me he was here yesterday.”
Of course he was coming in on her day off. Why had she even told him that in the message?
She stood up, and moved onto the jacket after asking him if he ever planned to wear it with a sweater. He wasn’t sure. Or if she should shorten the sleeves. He liked them a little longer.
“Chucky told us what happened in Ottawa,” he said.
Jessie felt her shoulders tense, but kept working. “Yeah?” she asked, not daring to look up. All this still felt too close to the surface, and she didn’t want this man she barely knew to know how much it had hurt when Matthew brushed her aside.
“Yeah, he said he looked for you after the fire.”
“I tried to stay, but my cousins and I were soaking wet and it was below freezing so we had to catch the train.”
“He said he went back the next day and you’d been there, but didn’t leave a note.”
That made Jessie gasp. Audibly. She blushed and tried to brush it off, “I was worried it might go to the wrong person,” she said, “plus I messaged him on Instagram and he never responded.”
He hummed, debating the best way to approach this. He wanted to do some digging without letting on that’s what he was doing. “He said you guys had quite the connection.”
Was she really going to go into this with one of his teammates? She hadn’t talked to anyone about it but Roger. Words bubbled up into her mouth so fast, she guessed she was.
“Yeah, we did.” God, why did she have to sound so moony?
“Do you think there’s still something there?”
“He made it pretty obvious there’s not.”
“I don’t think he meant to do that. He was pretty shocked to see you.”
“I was shocked to see him too, but I didn’t just brush him aside.”
“Listen, Jessie - it’s Jessie, right?”
She nodded.
“Matthew can be pretty thick. He gets so in his head, sometimes he doesn’t really think things through, but he told us what happened, and how much he liked you, and he said he fucked it and you wouldn’t want to see him again.”
She hummed, and got him a new suit to try on. She’d been right. The oxblood did look killer on him, like he could be in a GQ shoot. He looked impressed.
“Would you want to see him again?” Sam asked.
“If he came in here himself?”
He nodded.
“I’d at least give him a chance.”
Even though she would usually just move on, she’d never felt anything like the instant connection she and Matthew shared on New Years. It was the kind of thing she thought only existed in books and rom coms. Experiencing it in real life made it into something she couldn’t just walk away from.
They talked about where they were from and made comfortable small talk for the duration of the fitting. She told him how relieved she was when Raul trusted her enough to run the shop by herself one day a week.
“Listen, I’ll tell Chucky to come by next Wednesday. We’re leaving for the opening roadie that day, but I’ll try to get his head out of his ass before then.”
She giggled.
He could see why Matthew liked her, and could see how their personalities would match up well. She was kind and easy to talk to - quiet at first, but got louder as she got comfortable, and Chucky was just loud all the time. He could tell they both valued relationships more than things.
The next week, after their final practice before the season opening road trip, Benny cornered Matthew in his stall. “You need to go see Jessie.”
“She doesn't want to talk to me, man.”
“The way she asked me about you last week would say otherwise.”
He scoffed.
“I told her you still like her -”
“You what?!”
“She brought you up first, and you weren't doing shit, so don’t tell me I'm ruining your plans or some bull. She said she's called you a bunch of times, but you only show up when she's not there.”
“It's just easier,” Matthew mumbled. It wasn't his fault she told him when she'd be gone.
Benny rolled his eyes. “Dude, wake up. She still likes you.”
Matthew looked at him, skeptical, “she told you that?”
“Yes, but she didn’t need to. The first thing she asked me was if you’d been traded. We weren’t even talking about you.”
A ridiculous amount of hope lit up his face.
“I knew it! You still like her too!”
What’s not to like? Matthew thought.
“She runs the shop on Wednesdays. Just go talk to her.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I went there last Wednesday, dumbass. She told me.”
Matthew hesitated, still unconvinced.
“Go. Now. I’ll drive you myself if I have to. I’m sick and tired of you moping around when there’s such an easy solution to your problem.”
“Okay, okay. I’m going,” Matthew said, holding his hands up in defeat.
“And check your instagram. She said she sent you a message.”
Usually when she walked onto the sales floor after the doorbell dinged, Jessie would have to search for someone among the racks of fabric samples and ready to be tailored suits. This time, a man was standing at the counter, watching her with the same determined intensity he’d shown the first time they met.
He was here. Finally. Four of his suits had been sitting in the storage room for more than a week, further proof that he was avoiding her.
“Hi Matthew,” she greeted hesitantly.
“Hey Jessie.”
They looked at each other in awkward silence for a moment.
“Can I help you with something?”
“Yeah, Raul told me some of the suits were ready?”
“They are.”
“I just came to pick those up.”
“Oh,” the tiny spark of hope fizzled out again. Sam must not have made it through to him.
She looked instantly downcast.
To hell with it. He couldn't make any more of an ass of himself. “And I wanted to see you,” he blurted.
“You wanted to see…me?” she repeated, pulling a pen from her ponytail to start fiddling with it. He didn’t know why, but it struck him as such an endearing gesture.
“Yeah,” he said, heart falling. Was Sam setting him up? He was a prankster, but not to this level, usually. Not when it was this important.
“Why would you want to see me?” she asked, feeling that guard go up. Every time she got her hopes up about Matthew, he tore them down.
Thoughts raced through his mind. He could lie so easily, but where would that get him? It was time to just own up and blurt it out. Her reaction be damned. “Because I really like you.”
She looked surprised. Way more surprised than he’d expected. “I thought you didn’t remember.”
“How could I forget?” he asked. “I thought you must hate me since I forgot your name and acted like such an ass that first day.”
Shaking her head, Jessie wondered how on earth they got into this situation. “I mean, I was disappointed, but then, you backed it up by never coming to the shop when I was working, I thought you must be trying to avoid me.”
“I was.”
One of her eyebrows shot up.
“Not like that,” he floundered. “Like, I couldn’t stand to see you and remember how well we got on, and how much I like you, and how pretty you are when I knew I'd blown my chance and you hated me.”
She let out a laugh. “That makes no sense. What did I ever do to make you think I hated you? I called you every time something was finished, or we needed a new measurement. I gave you the best fabric selections.”
Had that been because she liked him? “I don’t know, it did in my brain. I guess I was so embarrassed I forgot your name when I like you so much, I was telling myself you must be angry with me.”
Jessie rolled her eyes. “You know, Matthew, for someone so smart, you can be pretty dumb.”
“You think I’m smart?” He’d been called many things in his life, but smart was rarely one of them.
“Yes. I think you’re very smart, except when it comes to romance, I guess.”
He chuffed a laugh, grabbing the back of his neck. “I really fucked this one up, didn’t I?”
“I don’t know,” she said, trying to be cool and hoping against hope that this last shot would land on target. If it didn’t, she was kicking him out and scrubbing him from all her memories. “I think you might still have a chance.”
His eyes snapped to hers. “Yeah?”
She nodded.
Heart pounding, but trying to keep that flirty, cool skin on, he walked around the counter to remove the barrier between them.
Knowing he still liked her brought all those feelings from the club rushing back. She’d never felt like that with anyone else. If only he knew how many times she’d replayed that night. How many times she remembered how he felt and how no one had ever kissed her like that, or swept her off her feet so quickly.
“Play your cards right,” she said, feeling breathless with the nearness of him. “And I think you might get another chance at bat.”
As he leaned in closer, her pupils dilated, and her eyes darted to his mouth. He licked his lips just to see her force her eyes back to his like last time. Her blush was even more adorable in the daylight.
“If I swing, what are my odds of getting a home run?”
She laughed. It didn’t break the spell. It turned out that palpable chemistry was still between them, just waiting to be ignited. Their eye contact was hot and glued together.
“Maybe not today,” she said, “but I think it’s a safe bet that you’ll get on base.”
Time moved in slow motion as he leaned in further, looking at her mouth, then her neck, then her cleavage, barely visible through the two undone buttons of her starched, white shirt, before snapping back to hers as she stopped him with a hand pressed tightly to his chest.
“We can’t do this here. There are cameras on the floor,” she said.
His head dropped forward in defeat. “I have to leave for Vegas in two hours,” he said, feeling more than a bit desperate. “I really don’t want to wait until I’m back.”
“I don’t want to either, but I’m telling you, if Raul catches me making out with a client, I’m going to be out on my ass.”
“So what do we do?”
She thought for a moment before an idea struck her. “Follow me.”
She made a big show of walking into the back, digging his new lilac suit out of the garment bag and hanging it in the private dressing room. “You go in there. When I come back and ask you how it’s fitting, you need to tell me something needs to be adjusted and invite me in, okay?”
“Right. Yeah, okay.”
She put out the sign that said she would return soon and locked the front door. It wasn’t that unusual to lock up when they were helping a high profile client, anyway. Plus, Wednesdays were always the slowest day of the week, hence why she was allowed to man the shop alone. She just hoped Raul wouldn’t have any reason to review the tapes.
Her whole chest felt like it was full of helium as she walked back to him. Were they really about to do this?
“Everything going okay in there?” she asked.
“Something’s wrong with this suit jacket,” he said. “Can you come take a look?”
Upon entering, she found Matthew with his shirt already off.
Sweet Jesus, she was not prepared for that. For his sculpted body, and his chest hair, that tapered into a thin trail running down the center of his abs before it dipped enticingly into the waistband of his pants.
“That’s not fair,” she said.
“What’s not fair?” he reached for her and drew her to him, hands splaying over her waist.
“You’re already half naked,” she said, eyes wandering down his chest again.
“You could be too,” he teased, playfully pulling at the shirt tucked into her waistband. He didn’t actually pull any of the fabric loose, which she appreciated. He was letting her set the pace.
“Damn, Jessie. You’re the only woman I know who can make a pant suit look sexy.”
She laughed, and pulled the whole shirt over her head, leaving her in a white camisole, a black lace bra peeking out from underneath it.
“Do you always wear black lingerie to work?” he asked, voice gone husky as he ran a finger under one of the straps.
“Only when I think you might come in.”
His eyes snapped to hers, thrilled but questioning.
“Sam told me he was going to try to get you to come by today.”
“So this really is for me?” he felt dizzy with the prospect.
“No. It’s for me. I put it on this morning, thinking that at the very least if you came in and you were an ass again, you wouldn’t get the satisfaction of seeing how hot I look in my bra,” she said, before stripping off the camisole so he could see exactly how hot she looked in her bra.
Seeing her, in black suit pants, a gold belt buckle flashing at her waist, and her sheer, floral lace bra that plunged between her breasts, the breath was sucked out of his lungs.
His ongoing ache for her intensified, pressing insistently against the confines of his jeans.
He stepped toward her when she once again stopped his progress with a hand to the chest. “I really like you, Matthew,” she said, swooning a little at the happiness that lit up his face, “but I was serious. I don't want to have sex.”
“Can you define that a little more?”
“What do you mean?”
“Like you don't want oral sex, or…”
She wouldn't have guessed oral sex would even be on the table. She practically had to beg past boyfriends for it.
“I mean I don't want to have penetrative sex. The first time with someone new is hard enough. I don't want to make it more complicated by taking a bed out of the equation.”
“I get that. Plus, it'll give me something to look forward to when I get back,” he said with a grin and a cheeky wink.
God, maybe they really were made for each other.
As his left hand slipped to the back of her neck, the other spread over her rib cage, thumb brushing against the soft lace that cupped her breast.
She sucked in a breath, letting her hand ghost up his torso over the ridges and valleys, until her fingers hooked over his shoulder. The other slid around to his back.
It felt like it had been a million years since they’d last done this. Not the touching, not the skin to skin, which felt like…it felt like heaven, but the longing.
Jessie was looking at him with that same hope and lust in her eyes. It made his stomach twist with that same wanting to fulfill them both.
It was so long coming, he wanted to savor every movement, every breath, every glance. Her eyes were so green. Somehow even more green up close.
Finally, when their lips met, she sighed, melting against him.
This was all together more intense and less hurried than their first kiss had been. It was a slow burn, a thorough seduction, a fulfillment of everything Matthew had been dreaming of that night they lost each other.
When he pulled away, their heavy breaths crashed together.
Fingertips sliding up her back, he tried to memorize the feel of her. Her skin was so soft.
Jessie was growing impatient. Any other moment, she would love this slow seduction. Most of the time she felt like men moved too fast. Today though, she had so much sexual frustration built up for him that the weight of desire was already heavy between her legs.
Taking matters into her own hands, she leaned in and trailed her mouth along his jaw before nipping the soft spot behind it, just under his ear. He shuddered when she soothed it with her tongue.
“I’ve been dreaming of this for so long,” she confessed, barely above a whisper.
That snapped him into action. Taking her waist, he pulled her flush to him, and crushed his mouth to hers.
There was the passion she’d been looking for.
As they surged together, she felt so restless and turned on, she tried to hook a knee over his hip in an attempt to slot him between her legs.
Groaning against her, his hand slid over her rear and down her leg to keep it elevated and wrapped around him.
Kissing her was so much better than he remembered. How was that possible? She was so good in his dreams. In reality, she was living - flesh and bone and wanting - and he couldn’t get enough.
Moving to her neck, he sucked her pulse point. He felt her tremble against him, but her hand still came up to pull him back to her mouth. “Nothing visible, okay? I have to go back to work.”
He nodded and caught her lips. It might be too late for that one, but he wouldn’t do it again.
Her desire was a wildfire, consuming every part of her. It wanted to consume him, too.
When she tucked two of her fingers behind the button of his jeans, a moan fell into her mouth.
“Okay?”
“Yeah.”
She tore the zipper down, and palmed him through his boxers. His hips jumped into her hand as a moan ripped from his throat.
His fingers fumbled to her belt buckle and paused.
“Please,” she whimpered.
He was clumsy with desperation and the distraction of her kissing and biting his neck, but he finally got it open and her pants undone.
The weight of the buckle sunk the waistband to the floor with a heavy clink, and Jessie stepped out of it, kicking off her shoes at the same time. Sinking her hand into his pants, she shoved them down his muscular legs.
He nearly fell over in his attempt to get out of his shoes so he could free himself from the shackle of the fabric around his ankles.
Jessie giggled, and moved with him as he stepped away. He finally got his first look at her in her underwear. Made of some fabric he couldn’t name, they were also black and cut high on her hip. He could see it was a thong in the mirrored wall behind her.
His jaw grew heavy with longing, but managed to make his mouth work enough to tell her, “you’re so beautiful, Jessie.”
“Thank you. I think you’re really handsome.” she said, running a hand down his chest. And he was - he could be a living sculpture in the Greek wing of the Louvre with his curly hair and sculpted body.
Sliding his hands over her hips, he pulled her to him once more. He hesitated for a moment, and Jessie took charge, too impatient to wait. “Matthew?”
“Hmm?”
“I really appreciate you getting my consent, I really, really do, but you can just move forward. I’ll tell you if I don’t like something.”
“Okay.”
She captured his mouth again and the fire roared to life between them, stoked hotter by so much skin touching skin.
Sneaking his fingers into the waistband of her panties, he pushed them down, trusting that she would stop him if she wanted to.
She didn’t want him to.
His fingers traced back up her leg and when he stroked her, she broke from the kiss to let her head lull forward onto his shoulder. Her panting breaths were the stuff of his dreams. She was already so wet, and he wanted nothing more than to bring her pleasure.
“Oh,” she moaned when he explored more, running a couple of rough fingers from her entrance to her throbbing bundle of nerves. She rocked into his hand, and he took the hint, caressing her over and over again until she was trembling and moaning.
“Matthew,” her voice was wrecked: desperate and thick with longing.
“What do you need?”
“Your fingers,” she begged, “inside me.”
He obeyed, following the rhythm she set. Pressing the pad of his thumb to her clit, a wicked, self satisfied smile took over his face as her head tipped back, and her breath hitched.
“Oh,” she moaned, “just like that.” Her hands slid to his arms, clinging to his biceps.
He wanted to eat her pleasure for breakfast - sustain himself with it on long, lonely nights. He knew he would dream of her voice and all her little sounds through the whole ten days away, anxious to come back to the very actual reality of her. He kept having to remind himself this wasn’t a dream.
He rutted against her thigh in an attempt to pacify some of his own lust.
Body shaking, she cried out.
Matthew continued to stroke and leaned in, kissing her right through her orgasm.
Feeling her core pulse around him again and again, the release was so long coming, it seemed to go on forever.
As her breathing finally slowed, he eased his fingers from her.
“Oh my god,” she said, still clutching him to stay upright. “I’m so pissed we had to wait nine months for this.”
Laughter barked out of his mouth.
When she could make her hands work, Jessie pulled his hard, hot length from his boxers, and stroked a few times.
His mouth fell open, and he panted, “it’s bullshit, right?”
“Such bullshit,” she agreed, devouring the pleasure that washed over his face.
“Wait,” he said, grasping her wrist. “I want this to last.”
“You already got me off,” she said. “What do you need to wait for?”
“I'm not going until you've come at least twice. What's the point of women being able to have multiple orgasms if I can't give them to you?”
That was some flawed logic, but she allowed him to pull her hand away. She wasn’t going to say no.
“Can I taste you?”
“If you want,” she said hesitantly, as if he might be pulling some kind of prank. She'd never had a man offer to go down on her first.
“I do want,” he said, guiding her to lean against the mirrored wall and sinking to his knees. “I've been wondering how you taste since we met.”
Maybe that oral fixation all the girls talked about online was actually true.
“Can you put your leg up here?” he asked, sliding a gentle hand to the back of her knee, and lifting so the joint bent around his palm. He guided her foot to the stool.
When he looked up at her, his blue eyes shining with excitement, she retraced their steps to get there. Not even ten minutes before would she have expected to end up with Matthew Tkachuk eating her out in the back dressing room.
“That feels okay?” he confirmed, palm stroking back up her thigh.
God, he was even making sure she was comfortable. Her whole body fluttered in anticipation. “Yeah,” she breathed.
Every other time a man had given her oral, they were fast and sloppy, obviously trying to get it over with as soon as possible. With Matthew, he seemed to be dragging it out for his own pleasure, tasting and teasing like he just couldn’t get enough. He was driving her crazy - winding her tighter and tighter.
“Matthew,” she moaned. It was better than any of his dreams. Better than any fantasy. “More. Please. More.”
She felt his lips briefly curve into a smile against her before he really got to work. Licking with the whole flat of his tongue, then flicking with the tip, he was suddenly everywhere.
Her hand scrambled for purchase on the wall behind her. Met only with the slick mirror, her fingers fumbled into his hair, searching for anything to hold on to.
He groaned into her, almost as if in pain.
“O-okay?” she asked, voice shaking as she attempted to loosen her grip.
When she felt his response but couldn't hear it, it took all her willpower to push him away. She was not going to hurt him, especially when he had been so insistent on her consent. She could feel his hard breathing rushing over her and it set her skin to trembling.
“Okay?” she asked again.
“Good,” he assured, eyes flicking up to meet hers. “I'll let you know if you pull too hard,” he said with a wink before diving back in.
Her head thunked back against the mirror. He really was made for her, that was the only explanation.
God, she was perfect. She tasted like paradise, like water in the desert, like his favorite meal after a long period of fasting. She satiated his every craving.
His competitive drive growled into a higher gear, demanding to please her until she whimpered and begged. He licked and sucked and spelled his own name with his tongue, gauging where she liked to be touched most.
“Matthew,” she moaned. “Oh my god, Matthew.”
Pleasure began to tingle low in her pelvis. It loosened her hips and turned her legs to putty. She'd never had a man take this much interest, let alone put so much effort into her pleasure. She moaned something unintelligible, even to her own ears.
He slipped a finger into her, and she cried out. Her hand tightened in his hair when he added another.
A whimper on every exhale, she panted, trying to keep some semblance of control. It shattered when he gently kneaded her g spot.
Pleasure thundered low in her belly, and she was forced over the cliff, glad to know Matthew would be there to catch her fall. Her vision turned hazy as she crashed. Time and space exploded into nothing more than shadowy constructs. She heard herself shout as if listening from another room.
When she came back to herself, Matthew was still languidly tasting her folds, one of his forearms braced over her hips to keep her upright.
Pushing him away from her core, she tried to catch her breath.
As he sat back, he wiped his face with his free hand. The satisfaction of pleasing her rumbled contentedly in his chest.
“Don’t take this the wrong way, but I think I fucking love you.”
He laughed, a look of delighted surprise on his face.
The reality of what she'd just said hit her and Jessie covered her face with her hands, “oh my god. I can't believe I just said that out loud.”
“That might be the nicest thing anyone’s ever said to me during sex.”
Relief sunk into her bones. Soul mates. They had to be soul mates.
A few moments later, she finally found her feet and pushed away from the mirror.
“Alright,” she said, reaching for him and wrapping her fingers around his erection. He stumbled toward her, anxious to feel more.
She smoothed the precome leaking from the tip onto the shaft with her thumb. “I think it's my turn to taste now.”
Matthew wasn't entirely sure what he'd expected her to do, but lowering to her knees in front of him right away hadn't been at the top of the list. He expected her to jerk him off for a minute, maybe kiss and tease him a little. Not that he was complaining. If she was willing, he'd gladly accept.
“Do you like more suction or more mouth?” she asked before licking the underside of his shaft.
Oh God.
“I dont - I don't care.” He wasn't sure he was even going to last long enough for it to make a difference. He felt so close to the surface already.
“You don't care?” she repeated, sitting back on her haunches to look up at him.
With her mouth off of him, he could explain his reasoning a little better.
“Frankly, I've been dreaming about this for so long, I could almost bust just from seeing you on your knees.”
She was flattered and also a little relieved she wasn't the only one.
“Okay,” she said as she reached up to pump him a few times. “Something we'll figure out later.”
The fact that she was thinking about the future, too, made him weak.
Her lips wrapped around his tip, tongue caressing, and he was right there.
Fuck. Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck.
“Jessie,” he moaned, “god that feels good.”
Was it the best blow job ever? Objectively no, but it was Jessie, so it felt more important than any that came before it. He felt like he was fifteen again, getting his first head, amazed by everything and having no restraint.
“I'm - I'm gonna come,” he moaned, trying to pull back so as not to come in her mouth.
Jessie would rather have it in her mouth than all over her, so she gripped the backs of his thighs to keep him in place.
“Oh, fuck.” How could she possibly be this perfect?
She sucked and caressed and he exploded with a long low groan.
She kept licking, albeit more gently, until he pulled back, sensitivity making it too much to bear.
“Holy shit,” he said. The room felt muggy and he felt content in a way he'd been longing for since they'd lost each other.
“Yeah,” she agreed.
He helped her to her feet, and pulled her against him, wanting to feel her close.
A while later, her phone, which had fallen out of one of her pants pockets, buzzed and the time flashed.
“Shit! I have to go,” he said, scrambling for his clothes. “I still have stuff to pack!”
“When’s your flight?”
“In an hour, but I have to drive home and then to the airport.”
They rushed to get their clothes back on. He hated seeing her bra disappear under the camisole again.
As soon as he was dressed, he grabbed her jaw and kissed her. Her hands floated from tucking her shirt to cup his face.
He'd just had her, but the wanting roared back to life as soon as she touched him, as if his body was trying to remind him what was possible between them. Like he could ever forget.
“This was so amazing. I promise I'll take you on a real date when I'm back, and I'll call you while I’m gone,” he said. “I'm sorry I have to dash out of here.”
He kissed her again, hard and purposefully, before rushing out of the dressing room.
“Wait!” she chased him onto the sales floor still tucking her shirt, “my number. You need my number.”
“Oh my god,” he slapped a palm to his forehead. “I can't believe I almost left without it again!”
She giggled, “you're not getting away from me this time.”
They exchanged numbers and Matthew raced home.
He rushed to pack the last of his things, grateful for the example his dad set, in always having a base bag packed the day before a road trip just in case something came up.
He was the last one on the plane, a first for him.
“Chucky just got fucked!” someone yelled.
Matthew felt his cheeks get hot. His hair was probably wild from Jessie's hands, and he could feel the love bite on his neck, a sure sign it would soon be a full blown mark.
Reino met his eyes and raised a brow. Jessie? he mouthed.
Matthew nodded.
He wiped the back of his hand over his brow in mock relief.
“Oh thank God,” Bennett exclaimed from across the aisle. “I thought I was going to have to lock you two in a room until you got together.”
Matthew laughed.
When he got settled, he sent Jessie a text. Just on the plane, but I'm missing you already. I'm back on the 14th, so pencil me in for that date.
I have you in for the weekend. We have a lot of time to make up for.

Liu Woods: Moving from Ottawa to Toronto he’s brand new to the district and city. Liu looks like your average loser, but he’s much more. A lot more social.
Helen Otis: Helen was actually sent to jail for attempted murder. He lied and manipulated his way through, pretending he was getting better. He is now back in Proxy High. He has a weird obsession with blood.
Candy Pop: Funky little jester who looks as if he’s ready to catch Pokémon! He was born in New York but now lives in Toronto Canada with a weird man (human Night Terrors) who he avoids by filling up his free time with after school activities.

Kagekao: School’s one and only plug. I’m not kidding when I say that. Kagekao provides people with drugs and alcohol, though he only provides it to trusted and known people. Ones who won’t snitch. He’s also one of the rich students that attends Proxy High.
Jason Meyers: Honor student. His parents expect highly of him, and so his own exceptions of himself are high. Though his wish is to be a toymaker, he knows his parents would kill him if he ever said that out loud. Jason gets bullied because he is: British, a born red head, self-centered, and worst of all…he wears a top hat.

He chooses to do all the work just because he doesn’t trust anyone else. Despite this, he can be caring for some people. He lives with his three siblings and older cousin.
Jonathan Blake (The Puppeteer): He’s sort of a sad little man these days. Found out his girlfriend cheated on him, but he has his best friend Helen Otis. Jon likes instruments and arts! He works as a delivery person. Delivers pizza at night and newspaper in the morning.
Laughing Jack: Schools personal clown. People either hate him or love him, he pulls pranks on anyone, anything, and everyone. No one is safe from him. Not even the teachers! He’s gotten in trouble because of his pranks. Oh and. He’s most likely never going to graduate. So. Have Fun LJ. His childhood best friend who was Issac Grossman turned out to be a serial killer, so that fucked him up a bit. But, he distracts himself with jokes and avoids people who want to question him about it.
Laughing Jill: She is Laughing Jacks twin sister. She’s the better twin. She does pull pranks, however her pranks only targets assholes like school bullies! Sometimes she gets pulled into LJ’s shenanigans. She does ballet after school!
Jane Richardson: She’s in a relationship with Mary. She’s also an honor student! Jane doesn’t mess around with her grades, she does everything on time and completed. She wants to make her parents proud (they already are).

a street interview: mason mctavish
tagging: @ivy-34, @francesfarhadi, @hzstry8, @cixrosie, @itsnotgray, @estapa94, @trevs-swiftie, @heartz4hischif you want to join the taglist let me know!!
mason was walking through the mall with trevor and jamie when he got stopped by a girl holding a microphone.
"hi i have a podcast and this weeks theme is sports so I was wondering if you guys would be interested in answering a question on one of america's major sports," you spoke.
"what do you mean?" trevor asked, looking between his friends.
"well, i'll ask you a question from either the nhl, nba or mlb and if you guys answer it you can win a prize if you're interested," you explained.
the three boys looked at each other and nodded.
you turned to your friend and started rolling the camera. “okay choose a category, nhl, nba or mlb,”
trevor answered first “nhl.”
“the nhl is comprised of 32 teams with 7 of them being canadian. can you name the 7 canadian teams in the nhl?” you asked.
“toronto maple leafs!” mason exclaimed first.
the three then huddled into a group to think of the rest. “what about cole’s team?”
“montreal canadiens!”
“hey isn’t hughes in canada?” jamie asked
“omg the vancouver canucks!” trevor picked up on quickly.
“you guys have a minute to name the other four,” you prompted.
trevor looked at you appalled “hey, you never said it was timed!” he argued. you shrugged at him “now you know,”
“edmonton oilers and calgary flames,” mason added.
jamie and trevor tried their hardest to think of the last two teams but failing short they looked to mason.
“ottawa senators and umm i think the winnipeg jets,” he added.
you smiled at mason and nodded. “congratulations you guys are correct! and you’ve got a little prize. the three of you are the owners of the coffee hours podcast new merchandise and these tickets to the long beach indy car grand prix!” you handed the three their prize.
mason put his beanie on and smiled at the camera as trevor inspected everything.
you signalled to your friend to switch the camera off before turning to the three boys again. “you guys don’t have to keep the merch if you don’t want to but please use the tickets. my cousin gave them to me and i don’t know if i want to go,” you explained.
“i think my sister listens to your podcast,” trevor spoke. you smiled, your eyes twinkling at the realisation that people actually liked your content.
mason thought it was adorable.
"can i get your instagram," mason blurted.
jamie and trevor snickered at the boy as you gave him a warm smile. "sure," you held out your hand for his phone and put in your username.
it took mason three days to gain the confidence to message you. the boy stared at your profile for a whole hour before trevor forced him to say something.
"look she's half swiss and you were born in Switzerland, make conversation about that," trevor suggested.
mason shrugged. there wasn’t much to go on with that conversation starter and he knew deep down trevor also knew that.
zoe.fraser shared a video
zoe.fraser: you’re a hockey player?
“she messaged me!” mason exclaimed showing trevor and jamie his phone.
at that time, trevor’s girlfriend walked in as the boys discussed how mason should respond.
“i think you should send a shrugging emoji” - trevor
“maybe say you weren’t sure if she was a fan and didn’t think it was necessary to mention” - jamie
“girls like it when you’re a bit cocky” - trevor.
trevor’s girlfriend promptly hit her boyfriend over the head and asked mason for his phone.
“holy shit, that’s the host of the coffee hours podcast. i love her content, i always listen to her in my car,” she explained.
“mils, can you help mason?” jamie asked.
millie smiled and formulated a response.
masonmctavish: guilty 😅
zoe.fraser: well then i think you guys cheated
“you were in one of her video?!” millie exclaimed. trevor nodded and asked his girlfriend to continue her work.
masonmctavish: how about i make it up to you?
zoe.fraser: are you asking me out on a date?
masonmctavish: only if you say yes
zoe.fraser: friday 9:30, after your game
masonmctavish: you’ve got yourself a date
mason hugged millie before she moved over to trevor. millie patted the boys shoulder before settling in next to her boyfriend.
“i cant believe you met her. i would actually die and that’s saying a lot cause i’ve met fernando alonso and sebastian vettel,” millie mumbled.
trevor squeezed his girlfriends cheeks “i’ll give you the sweater she gave us. she said it was her first official merch,”
millie kissed her boyfriend before turning to mason. “you better not screw this date up,” she threatened lightly.
mason nodded, gulping hard.
that threat did not help his nerves. at all

before the season starts, do you have predictions based on the current rosters/draftees? who do you think will be standout players? who might have the best season? etc etc
Making me flex my creds after a couple bourbons, I see you!
The Good: Boston is the team to beat this year. They didn't lose any of their stars this year (to retirement or free agency), they got my No. 1 pick of the draft in Hannah Bilka, and Frankel/Soderberg still make the best one-two goalie tandem in the league. The only question mark on the roster is if the new-look D corps can take some of the pressure off the goalie.
Montreal didn't tweak much of their roster, nor did they have to. ARD is aging out of her prime, but you've got a window there with her, MPP, and Stacey that you need to maximize. Hope that you can get a draft seed that doesn't rematch you against Boston and maximize what you can get from your role players. O'Neill was sneaky good last year and is only 26.
The Bad: Toronto is going to regress. You can bookmark this and come back to clown on me if they get the top seed again, but I don't see the pieces lining up for a second year in a row. Campbell isn't a strong enough goalie to stand on her head every game, and they were carried by an offense that will take a hit as Spooner works her way back from major surgery. I don't expect her to hit the wall as hard as, say, Tyler Seguin did after his season from hell a couple years ago, but you never want to be in a spot where your sparkplug is a step behind. (At the time of this post, Toronto also only has five goalies under contract, which... remember what I just said about Soupy standing on her head? Yeah.)
Ottawa has one big regression candidate as well, and that's Maschmeyer. Masch not only has the most mileage on her body from last season (not her fault, Abstreiter was working through injury) but she has a newborn at home, and I anticipate the Cole Hamels problem coming into play. Hamels, for those who didn't follow the Phillies in the late aughts, had a newborn at home right before the 2009 playoffs and suddenly forgot how to pitch, because he was sleeping maybe two hours a night. I think the Charge knew Masch was primed to take a step back, and that's why they swung for Gwyneth Philips in the draft. Philips was lights out in college - not sure how she'll adjust to senior-level play.
The Ugly: Let's talk about the elephant in the room that is Minnesota. A title hangover is real, and it's made worse by the behind-the-scenes drama. When I say that I expect Britta Curl to be a liability for the Frost, I'm not just talking about her Twitter personality. I had the misfortune of watching her on the Badgers for five years, and she may have decent counting stats, but I noticed a selfish, whiny player, which carried over her to her national team play. On D, you're expecting Clare Thompson to be a major contributor after an extended break from competitive play. The one good thing you can say about Minnesota is that Heise is finally healthy. You can't tell me that AC injury wasn't bugging her the back half of last season. I do think Taylor needs to add one step to her game, and it's physicality. A lot of that was being snakebitten by injury, but she has the frame of a power forward, and she needs to be throwing her weight around like Knight does.
And, last but unfortunately least... New York. For what it's worth, they will get a Fillier deal done now that they've indicated they're open to a shorter contract. I really like the Schroeder/Levy tandem. The coaching change will do them well. Now that I've given them their flowers, I need to be mean for a second. The Sirens do not have a player who can quarterback their offense. I love Alex Carpenter deeply, but she thrives as a second choice. She buries the greasy goals that snipers and true playmakers leave out for her. Abby Roque is the same way. That was my worry about taking Fillier 1OA - Princeton fucked her up. They took a dynamic, play-driving forward and made her a passive floater. Now she's on a team of people who hang around the zone, waiting for something to happen.
Players to Watch: I'm excited to see what Izzy Daniel can do with competent players around her. Her counting stats in her Patty Kaz year weren't great, but that'll happen when you're dragging along a husk of a team. Minnesota must have seen something in Hymlarova that I didn't. I've watched a lot of St. Cloud State hockey, and they're. Well. Not terribly great. Brooke McQuigge was sneaky good for Clarkson, perennial thorn in the rest of the NCAA's side. Elle Hartje has a good hockey IQ and 200-foot vision (though she doesn't solve New York's dynamo problem). Anna Wilgren adapted very well to Mark Johnson's system last year, which shows an adaptability that will come in handy in the pros.

Gérard/Sven/Yvette; up to snuff
As we approach the final two weeks publication, here's the last of the extras! For the prompt: I would love early relationship Sven/Yvette/Gerard, angst or fluff or first times or hurt/comfort.
(It's early relationship! But maybe not the OT3 one)
“I have a question for you,” Sven says.
“If it’s about that shirt, the answer is no,” Gérard says.
Sven looks down. “It’s a no?” he says.
“I feel like I’m looking at one of those books of optical illusions,” Gérard says.
“I liked those books,” Sven says.
Gérard did too. He doesn’t even mind the shirt, dizzying as it is, though Sven would get fined if the team saw it, and he clearly knows that, since this is the first time Gérard has seen it.
“It’s visual stimulation,” Sven insists. Gérard has to wonder, sometimes, where he comes from. Ottawa, by way of Sweden, but Gérard knows a lot of Ottawans, and a few Swedes too. They also find Sven inexplicable.
“Don’t you think Yvette gets enough of that in a classroom?” Gérard asks. He can’t think of anything more visually stimulating than an elementary school classroom. It’s almost like that’s the point.
“You have a point,” Sven says. “I’ll change.”
“No patterns!” Gérard says.
“You’re no fun!” Sven says.
Gérard’s fun. At least, he remembers being fun. Lately, perhaps, not so much. Perhaps he’d be more fun if Sven wasn’t constantly asking him for advice before his dates with Yvette.
He’s trying not to be weird about it. It’s hard, though, when Sven’s asking how to look sharp for a woman he only met because Gérard met her first. That is, when he isn’t asking where to take her, what to do, how to act, like he’s forgotten everything in the face of meeting her.
Gérard would think Sven had never dated before, but he was coming to the bitter end of a two year relationship when they met, and he’s dated a few women since, though nothing was serious enough for Gérard to meet them, let alone the rest of the team.
Yvette has met the team, of course. Day one, but Sven’s invited her to every event open to significant others since. She’s only come to one, to Sven’s disappointment — unsurprisingly, the schedule of a hockey player clashes with the schedule of a teacher — but if Gérard needed a sign that Sven was serious about her — he didn’t — that would have made it very obvious. The team’s important to him. More important than anything. Though perhaps not lately.
Sven was hesitant to ask him for advice at first, considering the situation, but Gérard told him it was fine, and he can’t be mad at Sven for taking him at his word. And it should be fine. He wants it to be fine. He’s sure it will be, eventually, and he’s waiting for that.
And who else could Sven ask for advice, really?
His parents? They’re somehow even weirder than Sven is — everything about him was explained the day Gérard met him. Or, nothing was explained, he’s still inexplicable, but at least he figured out where it came from.
Friends? Sven doesn’t have them, outside the team.
So then, the only alternative is their teammates. Yvette seems almost as smitten as Sven, which is saying something, since Gérard wouldn’t be surprised if he’s already surreptitiously measuring her ring finger whenever they hold hands. But even with that latitude, if Sven follows their boneheaded advice he’ll almost certainly end up single again. Every one of their teammates in a relationship got to that point despite everything about them. Gérard is saying that with affection — mostly — but even so.
“How’s this?” Sven asks, emerging from his bedroom, then striking a pose as Gérard surveys him.
“You look good,” Gérard say.
He does. The shirt’s a solid colour, thankfully. Sven was unable to resist pairing it with a patterned tie, but they work together. His hair’s sticking up a little, probably from the quick change, but it’s endearing. Gérard thinks Yvette would find it endearing too, but then, he doesn’t really know that, does he?
“You need to fix your hair, though,” he says, and Sven runs his fingers through it, messing it up worse until Gérard takes over, finger combing it into submission. His hair’s soft and thin, almost downy, like a child’s. Gérard tries not to linger.
“I’m nervous,” Sven admits. Gérard’s well aware of that, though there isn’t really anything to be nervous about at this point. It’s not like it’s a first date, or meeting the parents — if it wasn’t already clear they were serious, the fact she’s already met Sven’s and Sven’s already met hers, well, Gérard thinks that makes it very clear.
Sven’s parents adored her, and Gérard’s not surprised. Sven’s unsure how her parents felt about him, and Gérard’s not really surprised by that either. He bets they liked him, though. It’s hard not to be a little overwhelmed when the full force of his attention aimed at you, but it’s hard not to be bowled over by it either.
“You have nothing to be nervous about,” Gérard says.
“I know,” Sven says, cracking a small, nervous smile.
How could Yvette be anything but endeared? Gérard never had a chance, but she didn’t have one either.
“Thank you,” Sven says. “For, you know.”
“Saving Yvette’s eyesight?” Gérard asks.
“Yes,” Sven says. “Thank you for that.”
“Any time,” Gérard says, and wishes he was strong enough not to mean it.

It says I have to pay for the New York article 🥺 do you have any screenshots
here's the whole article
If you had the choice, would you rather play with Jack or Luke? And why? — Gage W.
If I had to choose right now, I’d probably play with Jack since he’s in the NHL. Playing with Luke I’d be USHL U18 so don’t wanna go backwards. (laughs) But I believe Luke’s a really good player and he’ll get here one day so that’ll be a tough question at some point but right now it’d be Jack because he’s in the same league.
Do you think it’s easier to find chemistry with another defenceman versus a forward or does it not really matter?
It depends. Sometimes you just think the same way and that can be with a forward that you read off. A lot of the times I’m on the ice with Millsy or Petey and we kinda know what we’re all doing to a certain extent so that’s pretty easy. And then me and (Travis) Hamonic have gotten pretty used to each other, I think the last couple of games we’ve really been doing well.
I think regarding that question, me and Jack, we’ve played together and we’ve had good chemistry. I think that’s kinda because we play the same way with our reads and the way we think of the game is the same. I think that’s the same with Luke so it’d be pretty easy with both of them.
Compare yourself to Luke as a defenceman. Who wins in different aspects of the game? — Junginator J.
Luke’s a hell of a player and he’s gonna get drafted really high. I think Luke can be … a guy I really like for him is Miro Heiskanen or Shea Theodore. I think those are guys he likes to watch because as much as he is like me, he is bigger than me, he’s 6-foot-2, so I think he can be more like those guys. For Luke with having that range he can be what he is as an offensive guy and then also defensively be really solid and be hard on guys.
I think he’s kinda got the best of both worlds and I always tell him he better take advantage of his height. (laughs)
What does a typical night on the road look like this year? What occupies your time away from the rink? — Andrew P.
We haven’t been on the road in a while, I think this is our first trip in 30 days maybe. But yeah, it’s definitely different this year. If it was last year and I was in Ottawa, I’d be going over to Brady’s (Tkachuk), see (Josh) Norris and we’d have dinner and he’d take me out somewhere.
Right now I think it would just be a quiet night. We’d have our team dinner and then maybe hang out as a group for a bit in the team lounge and then probably just all go up and get a good sleep.
Has it been tougher than other years because of that?
Yeah, I think it has been. Everyone’s dealing with it but I think last year was probably more fun than this year just because (of) the team camaraderie and being able to go to these cities and go out, see things, go eat and those things, not just sit in your hotel room. But it is what it is, the whole league’s dealing with it. We’re happy to be playing and if this is what you gotta do then it is what it is.
What is your favourite thing about living in Vancouver so far? — Andrew U.
When I first went to Vancouver I had no idea about some of the nice beaches they had. Especially at the start of the season, I got the scooter so me, Petey and Brock usually take our scooters along the pier and we’ll chill on the beaches.
If you go right now is it raining there? But a week ago it was really nice and we could take our scooters and go for a nice ride.
I think that’s something that not a lot of people know about Vancouver is how nice the beaches are. I always say that there are crazy beaches here and people are surprised. I think that’s a really nice part of Van that I really enjoy.
We’ve come to know that last season Petey chirped you for driving a Toyota. Did he peer pressure you into getting an Audi this year and have you ever chirped him back about the Audi commercial he was in? — Paolo M.
Yeah, I mean I think he’s pretty sensitive with his commercial, I don’t know how much he liked that. (smirks) For me, it was all fun and games and I thought he did a good job.
He would chirp me about that Toyota but I love the Toyota. I thought it was great, it was a really nice car. I would have went back to it for this year but just went with the (Audi) RS7. I’m not a car guy so I’ll take a wagon to the rink if I have to, anything with four wheels. (laughs) But yeah, it’s a nice car and sometimes Petey used to give it to me, it’s all good.
Last year I was coming out of the parking garage and I was like wow, Quinn’s got a bright blue Toyota SUV. I didn’t think you’d go for the bright colour there.
Wasn’t very subtle, was it? I thought I was getting black actually and they showed up with blue. I didn’t wanna be a brat, I was happy for the car so that was fine. But yeah, the bright blue wasn’t very subtle. (laughs)
What was one thing you splashed out on when you got your first big league paycheque? — Will C.
I haven’t bought anything yet honestly. I know my brother bought a car and he needed one. I haven’t really needed one right because I’ve gotten some in Van. I dabble on clothes, I buy some nice stuff once in a while, I’ll buy some nice shoes. But as far as something really big like a car or anything like that, I haven’t done that.
What clothing do you like? I heard from guys there’s a Gucci tie you wore a lot as a rookie.
Yeah, the Gucci ties are nice. I like Kith, Kith is a really cool brand I like to get into. We’ll see, I usually follow my brother’s lead too he’s pretty dialled into clothing.
Petey called you a messy guy, what was Elias Pettersson like as a roommate last year? — Emily B.
Me and Petey are really tight so I loved it. We had a lot of fun together. We don’t have roommates this year in the hotels but I think me and him both miss each other and would want to roommate.
Him as a roommate, sometimes he would ask me like a million questions at night. I would just be on my phone trying to relax and chill and I wouldn’t respond because I was just zoned in on my phone. He would get so mad at me and then all of a sudden he wouldn’t talk to me for like a day, he’s like “Oh, how does it feel now” and that happened two or three times. So I had to be careful with that not to hurt his feelings and act like I’m ignoring him.
But yeah, we had a lot of fun, he’s one of my best friends so we had some good times too.
What would he ask you about?
You don’t wanna know. (laughs)
Are you actually as messy as he says or are his standards for cleanliness too high?
No, I think his standards are crazy high and I mean good for him he’s a really neat and orderly person. I also think we were just on these crazy long road trips like we had a 16-day one and we were sick of each other. We must have been in one of those fights and he just got pissed at me and said that. I gave him a lot of crap after that, though.
Which Tkachuk brother is more annoying to play against? — Rebecca T.
I don’t know. I know Brady rubbed me out a couple times (Monday) and he had two assists so that was annoying. He was really good (Monday) and Matthew the same thing.
I think it’s more fun to play against Brady because I’ve known him since we were 10 years old, he’s one of my best friends and I can’t take him seriously out there. And Matthew we’re really good friends too, but I’ve just known Brady for so long so I’d say Matthew is more annoying to play against.
Who tells the best jokes and/or chirps on the team? Also, who would be your dream defence partner in the league (other than Chris Tanev or Travis Hamonic)? — Owen C.
We have some funny guys. Millsy’s really funny. (Brandon) Sutter’s funny too. (Tanner) Pearson’s funny, he says some good stuff on the bench. (Jayce) Hawryluk never stops talking on the bench, it’s crazy. It’s pretty funny we love his energy. (Tyler) Myers is very timely he says some good things that are pretty funny.
We got a fun group and definitely on the bench sometimes when someone’s yelling at someone, especially the last couple games because you know Brady’s yelling at someone and someone’s yelling back so it’s been funny.
And regarding the D partner, I don’t know. I don’t put a lot of thought into it because it’s a what-if question, I think me and Hamonic are doing a really good job right now. Obviously, me and Chris were good last year. I think me and Ham are starting to figure things out and we’re playing pretty well to be honest.
What’s one life lesson that you’ve learned since turning professional? And what’s one piece of advice you would give to 14-year-old Quinn Hughes knowing what you know now? — Eric L.
That’s a tough question. I don’t know, I think part of being a pro is just eating well, sleeping well, doing the right things and I think sometimes my rookie year I’d come to a game and I’d be really tired because maybe I wasn’t hydrated or warming up the way I should have been or whatever it was.
I think I played 68 games last year, it’s way more than what I usually play. I think this year I’ve been learning as a pro, getting some good sleep, eating the right way, practising hard and doing all those things so you’re more ready for the game.
Regarding the 14-year-old thing, I’d tell myself to just enjoy the process. As a young kid sometimes, you’re so worried about where you’re going to be or where you’re going or what’s going on but (I’d tell myself) to just enjoy it.
I think I did that. I did that and enjoyed it but if I had to say to other kids, I would say enjoy the process, work hard and have fun with it. When you’re having fun you’re going to work hard and if you’re working hard you’re going to get better.
If you weren’t a hockey player, what else might you be doing? — Veronica X.
I don’t know, I love golf. I’d probably be golfing a lot. I’d be in school somewhere … I’d be a senior right now so I’d probably be getting my degree in the next couple of weeks. Maybe business or sport management? That’s what I was looking at at Michigan for two years.
Never really had to think about that because I love hockey and that’s what I realized I want to do at a young age but if hockey was not an option I guess I’d be doing another sport.
Back when you played in Michigan, someone saw you dipping your turkey sandwich in your cup of coffee. Can you share with us any other weird food habits that you have? Also, have you made any progress on your cooking skills this season? — Paolo M.
That’s so crazy, I don’t know where this comes from — like I don’t even drink coffee. (laughs) I’ve never really drank coffee in my life. I even hate turkey sandwiches, I’d go with the salami sandwich.
But yeah I don’t know I feel like I’m a normal guy. I just have my same things as everyone else. I’m a normal guy, nothing crazy.
My cooking’s gotten better, it’s had to with (the fact that) we’re not allowed to go to restaurants and stuff. I’ve had a lot of fun with it, especially at the start of the year me and Petey would switch off and I’d eat at his house one night and he’d eat at mine. It was almost like a competition of whose dinners are better so that was pretty fun.
It’s getting tiring now, I’ve been cooking for five months, I kinda just wanna go out and eat but yeah it’s been good.
What are some of your favourite things to make?
I’m really good at making steaks. I can make salmon as well but I think Petey’s gotten me on the chicken and he’s pretty good on the steaks too but I’m solid on them. I make good steak and he’ll tell you that too.

Summer 2018
It is currently summer, and I am at home in St. Louis with my family. Hockey season is officially over which means both my brothers are home. I am currently in my room sitting on my bed and I have both University letters that I applied for in front of me right now, I'm scared to open them.
My dream school has always been Ottawa but it’s hard to get accepted. My second choice is Michigan since the Norris family lives pretty close to Ann Arbor. The only thing that sucks is that Josh will be a Sophomore at Michigan and we do not get along.
We’ve known each other since we were kids, Brady and Josh played in the Untdp together which is when we met, our parents became good friends. Dalton has always been like an older brother to me. Josh on the other hand has always been mean to me, whether it was insulting me, or pulling my hair when we were 12 years old or making fun of me in front of my friends and it never got better. I thought back to the first time I met Josh.
Flashback
We are 15 years old, it is my first time spending the summer at the Hughes Lake house along with my family and Josh’s family.
We just got to the Lake house when Ellen and Traci came outside with Josh.
“Josh this is Yn, she is Brady's younger sister and she's going to be spending the summer with us.” Traci told Josh. Josh made a disgusting look when he looked at me and then back at his mother.
“I don’t want to be friends with her” he told his mom before going back inside the house. I looked at my mom with a sad look. Her, Traci and Ellen gave me a sad smile.
“I’m sorry Yn, he’s not usually like this, it’ll get better I promise '' Traci reassured me.
I nodded.
End of flashback
It never got better, it only got worse.
I snapped out of it when there was a knock on my door.
“Come in,” I said. Matthew poked his head in the room smiling, but it soon disappeared when he saw the nervous look on my face. He came in and closed the door behind him. He made his way to the bed and sat in front of me.
“What’s going on? Are you okay?” He asked worriedly.
I sighed and shocked my head before pointing and both letters that are next to him. He looked and his eyes widened.
“When did they come in?” He asked, looking back at me.
“This morning, mom gave them to me. I told her I wanted to open them alone before telling everyone but I'm scared” I told him.
He smiled softly at me before picking them up and giving them to me.
“Do you want me to stay with you?” He asked.
“Would you?”
“Of course, now open them so I know which shirt I’ll need to buy to support you” he said smiling. I chuckled before putting the Michigan letter down and opening my Ottawa letter.
I took a deep breath before smiling and reading the letter. My smile soon disappeared when I learned I am on the waitlist.
“What does it say?” Matthew asked worriedly.
I brushed off tears that were threatening to fall. I shock my head.
“Waitlisted” I said sadly.
“Yn, it’s going to be okay, even if you don’t start there, you might be able to go after your first year,” he said. I nodded. I knew all of that, I just wish I could have been accepted immediately.
I grabbed the Michigan letter and opened it. I read it, and I got accepted. Matthew raised his eyebrows in question. I nodded my head. Matt leaned forward to pull me in a hug.
“I’m proud of you no matter what, and in Michigan you’ll have Josh and Quinn,” he said, trying to encourage me. I scoffed, pulling away from the hug and giving him a ‘are you for real’ look.
Matthew laughed.
“Look, maybe this will get you and Josh to be friends,” he said hopefully.
“I doubt it Matt, please don’t tell any of them i’m going there” I said. He nodded.
“I won’t but Brady might tell Quinn who might tell Josh, and we all know that mom and dad will tell Dwayne and Traci” he said, making me groan.
“Come on, let’s go tell everyone the news” he said, taking my hand and pulling me downstairs where everyone was.
“Yn has something she wants to share with everyone” he said smiling.
“Did you open the letters?” Mom asked. Brady’s eyes widened.
“Oh where are you going?” Brady asked excitedly, I know he was hopping I was going to Ottawa with him.
“Michigan… I got waitlisted for Ottawa, but i’ll try again next year” I said hopeful.
Everyone smiled and came to give me a hug and congratulated me.
“As much as i wish you would be joining me in Ottawa, you won’t be alone in Michigan, Wait till I tell Quinn and Josh about this,” Brady said happily. My eyes widened, I shook my head.
“Please don’t, Josh and I don’t get along. If you tell Quinn please tell him not to tell Josh. I don't want him knowing I'll be there” I asked.
My mom looked at me sadly.
“Can we at least tell Dwayne and Traci, same with Jim and Ellen? If there’s ever anything and your dad and I can’t be there we know that one of them will be.” My mom asked.
I nodded.
“Can you just please ask them if they don’t tell Josh?” I asked
“I will sweetheart, I’m incredibly proud of you, all my kids are now grown ups” she said smiling softly, with tears in her eyes.
“Don’t worry mom, Matthew still acts like a kid” Brady said, making everyone laugh.
First week, Michigan 2018
I’ve been getting settled in Michigan for the past week. My parents went back to St. Louis yesterday. I’m in a single dorm room which i’m happy about, I didn’t want a roommate.
My mom ended up telling Dwayne and Traci along with Jim and Ellen that I was starting the year here. They were all very happy, they also promised not to tell Josh and to let me do it once I was ready, but they did let Quinn know so he could keep an eye on me, or help show me around, thankfully he promised not to tell Josh.
Classes are starting soon, I’m excited yet nervous since I don’t know anyone here. I’ve never been shy so I know I'll be able to make friends, I just have to make sure not to tell them I'm related to Matthew and Brady because when people find out that’s one of the only reasons they want to be friends.
I just hope everything goes well when classes start.
One Month, Michigan 2018
I’ve been here for a month now, classes have been good, I've made a friend whose name is Molly. Her dorm is right next to mine, it turns out her brother plays on the hockey team.
I also met her brother, I have Econ with him and a few other freshmen on the men’s hockey team. After Molly introduced me to her brother, he introduced me to Nick since we all have Econ together I usually sit with them.
The boys invited me to a party tonight which the sophomore’s are throwing at their house. I was a little hesitant to accept since Josh will be there since it’s at his house.
But it’s already been a month so he’s going to find out soon anyways plus I don’t like lying to the guys about who I am, so I ended up accepting.
Molly was also going so she asked if I wanted to pregame with her, which I gladly agreed. Jimmy ended up getting one of the seniors on the team to buy us alcohol, which thank god since if i’m going to be seeing Josh, I’ll need alcohol in my system.
Molly and I were sitting on her bed talking and drinking. I've been nervous the whole day. I don’t know how Josh will react when he sees me, will he make a scene in front of everyone? Will he tell the guys not to talk to me again? Will they listen to him?
“Yn are you okay? You look nervous” Molly asked worriedly. I sighed before nodding.
“I didn’t really tell anyone here about this but um, I already know Josh Norris and I didn’t know who your brother was before but then I found out they’re teammates. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you but my family is really close with him along with the Hughes family since my brother Brady played in the Untdp with Josh and Quinn.” I said she looked at me surprised.
“It’s fine I get why you didn’t tell me you didn’t want him to find out you go here, and by Brady do you mean Brady Tkachuk?” She asked. I nodded.
“Okay then, I guess we both have brothers who play hockey,” she said, making me chuckle.
“So you’re not mad I didn’t tell you?” I asked worriedly. She shook her head and smiled.
“Not at all” she said
“Great, I was worried that when you found out you wouldn’t want to be friends anymore” I said and she laughed.
“I understand why you didn’t want anyone to know, i’m not going to stop being friends with you because of it” she said and I smiled
“I’m just worried that Josh might cause a scene tonight when he sees me,” I said.
“If it gets to much, or he starts to make a scene, let me know and we’ll leave”
“I don’t want you to leave the party because of me”
“Don’t worry about it, I wouldn’t leave you alone” she said smiling.
After a while we met up with her brother, along with Nick. We all made our way to the party together thank god. I ended up warning them about the Josh situation, just like Molly they understood.
Once we got there we made our way to the living room where it was already packed with people. Nick and Jimmy went to get us some drinks. When they got back they gave Molly and I a white claw. I’m already feeling a little drunk, but not too bad.
We kept talking when I felt someone tap me on the shoulder. I turned around confused to see a happy Quinn Hughes, which made me smile. Quinn is probably one of the Nicest guys ever, I like him, and unlike Josh he actually likes me.
Quinn Smiled brightly.
“I thought that was you, how are you enjoying Michigan?” He rambled before pulling me in a hug. I Chuckled.
“I like it,” I replied. He pulled away from the hug before looking at me confused.
“I’m glad, remember to text me if you ever need anything?”
“I know” I said
“ I could have showed you around campus, you know” he said. I could tell he was a little hurt that I ask him.
“I’m sorry Quinn, but I didn’t want to risk Josh finding out” I said, Quinn’s eyes softened.
“Well if he tries anything, let me know, he’s not the only one who lives here” he said.
“Thanks Quinn” I said.
“He’s in the kitchen now if you just want to get it over with,” Quinn said.
I looked at him before looking at Molly and the guys. They nodded.
“Okay sure probably best to just do that, if it goes south Molly, can yo…” I started but she cut me off
“I’ll rescue you, I promise,” she said with a smile.
“Thank you” I said before looking back at Quinn and nodding.
As we started walking I got even more nervous than I already was.
we made our way to the guys.
Josh has his back to us so he can’t see us making our way to them, but Will looked our way and his eyes widened, he was at the lake house for a bit this summer.
Josh turned around confused but when his eyes landed on me, he was pissed.
He met Quinn and I half way And looked down at me with a glare. If I was anyone else they probably would have been terrified and honestly I was a little bit, Josh is way taller than me, I'm only 5”5 so he’s towering over me.
“What the hell are you doing here?” he said harshly.
Quinn looked at him Annoyed
“Josh seriously, leave her alone. She’s a student here now, and unlike you I actually like her along with some of the freshmen so she’s not going anywhere "Quinn told him.
Josh rolled his eyes and laughed. What the hell was so funny?
“Just because you go here now, doesn’t mean I'm going to start being nice to you” he said looking me straight in the eyes.
“Wouldn’t expect anything else from you” I said annoyed.
He just rolled his eyes and went back to the rest of the guys.
“Well that went better than expected, '' Quinn said surprised, which made me laugh.
“Same Quinn, I honestly thought It was going to be worse.”
If it wasn’t the fact that Josh was angry with me, I actually thought he looked amazing. I thought, I snapped out of it, what the hell? I can’t stand the guy and now I think he looks good? I think I had enough to drink.
March 2019
(Pretend they made it to the big ten)
With Josh finding out that I'm in Michigan I thought it would be worse than it is. I think Quinn has been keeping him in check, which I am very grateful for.
I’ve been going to the hockey game with Molly, we got even more close.
Even though Josh still tries to make my life a living hell, the rest of the guys on the team like me.
I reapplied to Ottawa about a month ago. I'm still waiting for my acceptance letter by email, I didn’t tell the guys, the only one who knows is Molly.
It’s now Monday and this weekend the guys are going to Minnesota for the Big Ten Championship. Molly was going with her parents since it’s a big game for the boys.
I really hope they win, they’ve been playing amazing.
I am currently in my dorm room working on some homework when my phone starts ringing. I looked to see that Traci was calling me.
I answered.
“Hey Traci” I said happily, she’s always been like a second mom to me.
“Hey sweetheart, what are you up to?” She asked
“Right now I am finishing some homework, what’s up?” I asked.
“That’s good, I always have to keep those grades up,” she said, making me laugh.
“I was actually wondering if you wanted to come with Dwayne and I to Minnesota this weekend for the Big Ten Championship game?” She asked.
“I don’t know if that’s a good idea, Josh and I don’t exactly get along”
“Sweetheart, that doesn’t matter, I know Molly is also going and Dwayne and I love you like a daughter so we thought we would ask, you don’t have to if you don’t want to” she said softly. I thought about it for a few seconds. I can complete all my homework before, and that way I won’t be alone in Ann Arbor when all my friends are in Minnesota.
I smiled softly.
“I’d love to,” I said.
“Perfect, I can’t wait, I’ll send you the details” she said happily.
“Thank you Traci”
“Anytime sweetheart, I'll let you get back to your homework” she said.
Once we said our goodbyes I hung up and texted Molly to tell her I was going to Minnesota with them, she’s excited and so am I.
Big Ten Championship, 2019
Dwayne, Traci and I got to Minnesota this Morning after we made our way to the hotel. Traci and I met up with Molly and her mom, along with Ellen and we went to do a little bit of shopping at the mall. That game is tonight, so at 3 we all made our ways back to the hotel so we could get ready for the game.
I was nervous the whole game but luckily Michigan was able to win. Thankfully it’s Friday, and everyone is leaving to go back to Michigan tomorrow morning. The guys have already said they are throwing a party as soon as they step foot in Ann Arbor.
As soon as the plane landed Traci and Dwayne dropped us off on Campus where we both made our way to our dorms to get ready for this party and hang out with the boys.
They’re flight is supposed to land in an hour, so we have time to chat and get ready.
When the boys were ready to get the party started Quinn texted me to let me know we could go over to the seniors house.
Once we arrived we started drinking with the boys, they were already drinking full swing when we got there.
Talking and partying with them is always fun.
At around 8:00 p.m. I saw Josh make his way to the kitchen, probably to get himself another drink, I followed him there. He took a beer out of the cooler, he turned around to see me there, I smiled weakly.
“Do you mind giving me one?” I asked.
He rolled his eyes before taking a second beer and passing it to me.
I smiled
“Thank you.” I replied.
He gave me a small nod and went to walk away but I stopped him.
There was no one else in the kitchen, everyone was either in the living room or outside.
“Wait” I rushed out so he wouldn’t leave.
He stopped in his tracks before turning and looking at me. He raised his eyebrows in question.
“What?” He asked, annoyed.
I was a little drunk but not too bad, but thankfully when I have alcohol in my system I’m not scared to talk to him.
“I just wanted to say congrats, you guys played really well” I said.
He nodded and went to walk away again.
“Why do you hate me so much?” I blurted out.
Josh rolled his eyes.
“Because I don’t like you,” he said and walked away. Why can’t he see me the same way I see him? He’s an incredible person even though he’s always mean to me, he’s nice to everyone else he’d do anything for his friends or family. I just wish he liked me.
It sucks having a crush on someone when that someone hates you.
I sighed before making my way back to Molly.
Frozen four 2019
I finally got the Letter from Ottawa. I've been accepted so it means I'll be moving there next year. Molly was a little sad when she found out I was leaving Umich but she was also excited for me to be going to my dream school, she told me that we would still stay in touch and we both promised to visit each other.
Jimmy heard the conversation and ended up telling Will who told Josh. Josh ended up coming to my door angry saying that the only reason I was going to Ottawa was because he was going to Ottawa. I was going since it’s my dream school and my brother is also there.
The argument ended in a screaming match and we haven’t talked to each other since.
I really wish we could get along but I don’t think we ever will.
I went to Tampa with Dwayne and Traci to watch the Frozen Four, sadly the boys lost, which meant Josh left for Ottawa, Quinn was leaving for Vancouver, it was an emotional time.
Once I got back to Umich, the last 2 weeks of University flew by. I said goodbye to Molly and the guys before finally heading home to St. Louis.
Three Years Later, Summer 2023
NHL playoff we’re officially over, sadly Matty lost in the finals against Vegas and got injured but they had a good run.
Everyone has been home for a while now. We are leaving today to go to New Jersey for Brady and Emma’s wedding.
I can’t wait to finally have another sister. Emma and Brady are perfect for each other, I hope someday I’ll find that type of love.
Three years went by fast, I spent the past three years in Ottawa ignoring Josh, it wasn’t that hard since he was also keeping his distance from me.
Thankfully the flight went by fast and I was able to sleep on the plane, I didn’t spend it worrying about seeing Josh. The whole Norris family along with the Hughes family will be at the wedding. As excited as I am to see Dalton, Quinn, Josh and Jack, I am not excited to see Josh.
Josh and I have seen each other a few time in Ottawa but the only time we talked to each other was to argue, it only got worse after he accused me of only going to Ottawa to make his life a living hell since I was going to be in Ottawa. I never told anyone about that fight, they all know we don’t get along so it won’t be a surprise if we get into an argument at the wedding.
My parents warned me to try and not make a scene to ruin Brady and Emma’s wedding. I totally understand that’s the last thing I want to do, plus we are all adults here.
Rehearsal dinner
Once Taryn and I were ready we met up with Matty and our parents to go to the venue.
I’m so nervous about seeing Josh, that's all I can think about. Once we get there he’s the first one I see, he’s with his brother and parents he had his back to me which meant he didn’t see me but Dalton did so he waved and smiled. I did the same, that’s when Josh turned around confused and saw me, all he did was send me a glare and went back to talking with his brother.
I really hope this doesn’t cause any trouble.
During the end of the night when everyone was around talking and drinking I made my way out on the balcony so I could get some fresh air.
I didn’t realize anyone followed me until I heard the door slide open and then shut.
I turned around only to find Josh.
I rolled my eyes and turned back around to look at the view.
If he doesn’t want to be anywhere near me, why did he follow me outside?
“What do you want Josh?” I asked, annoyed, when he came and stood next to me. I looked up to see he was looking at the sky.
He looks really good in his suit.
“I just thought I’d tell you not to cause a scene this weekend and ruin your brother’s wedding” he said
I scoffed before turning fully to look at him.
“Screw you, I was doing pretty good at ignoring you, why the hell did you have to come out here and start this?” I asked angrily.
He chuckled
“This is what I meant all you had to do was agree and move on,” he said, pissed.
“You started it, What the hell is a matter with you? It’s always like this… why do you hate me so much?” I asked, pissed.
“Because you deserve it”
I scoffed.
“Except I don’t… i’ll i’ve ever tried to do was be nice to you… what have I ever done to you to make you hate me so much?…” I said tears are threatening to fall. Before Josh could say anything Matt interrupted.
“That’s enough you two, don’t do this here” I heard Matt say before he pulled me away. I saw Dalton and Quinn giving me a sad look before he pulled Josh back inside.
I was so focused on the argument I never realized they’d made their way outside.
Once Josh, Dalton and Quinn made their way inside Matt, looked at me worried.
“What happened between the two of you? Usually when you guys know something important, you guys ignore each other, I mean brady always said you guys mostly ignored each other in Ottawa except for a few times… Did something happen?” Matt asked.
I sighed before nodding my head.
“When I got accepted to Ottawa three years ago as you know, I had only told Molly, but turns out Jimmy had heard so he told Will who told Josh… Josh accused me of only going to Ottawa because he was also going, so I could make his life a living hell, which is why i tried ignoring him as much as I could for the past three years” I said, wiping away the tears that rolled down my cheek.
Matthew signed before pulling me in a hug. I started to silently cry.
“I’m so sorry, Yn” he said sadly.
“Why does he hate me so much? Should have I stayed in Michigan? Should I never had moved to Ottawa in the First place?” I asked
Should I have let him win and stayed in Michigan even though Ottawa to my dream school three years ago? Should I have left my dreams while he goes to live his? Should I leave the Job I’m supposed to start in September in Ottawa and stay in St. Louis?
“First off you Went to Ottawa because you had worked your ass off for it, so you weren’t ever going to back out. Second I don’t think he’s ever hated you, so you better not be thinking of turning that job down in Ottawa just to please him…” matt said
“You literally just heard him, he clearly doesn’t like me… I just wish he could see me the way I see him” I blurt out. I look at Matt with wide eyes, I can't believe I just said that.
Matt started smirking.
“Stop, you better not say anything” I pointed at him.
He raised his hands up in surrender.
“Look I won’t say anything… but guys are kinda idiots so we usually do stupid things when we like a girl… I think he might actually feel the same way he’s just too afraid to say anything, "Matt said, making me laugh.
“Yeah right” I said in disbelief, there is no way Josh feels the same way about me. I won’t believe it.
Matt and I finally made our way inside, we didn’t mention what happened to anyone, no chance was I going to ruin Brady and Emma’s night.
I didn’t see Josh anywhere so maybe he left.
Once the night was over we all made our ways to our rooms. Thankfully I'm rooming with Taryn. When I was finally ready for bed, Taryn was laying on her phone when she saw me making my way to my bed.
“What happened on the balcony tonight?” She was curious. She put her phone on the bedside table before looking at me.
I looked at her shocked, I didn’t realize anyone noticed we were there.
“You saw that?” I asked, before getting under the blanket.
“Yeah, Emma’s the one who noticed and told me, '' she said. I looked at her Guilty. Fuck i was really hopping neither Emma or Brady saw that.
Taryn saw my guilty look before she reassured me.
“Don’t worry, she wasn’t mad… she was just worried about you… apparently she thinks you like Josh or something?” She said
My eyes widened.
“What about me? Puff no…” I struggle nervously. Taryn's eyes widened before she started laughing.
“Oh my god, she was right? Why the hell didn’t you tell me this?” She asked
“Because he’s never going to feel the same way” I mumbled, but she still heard me.
“He’s an idiot if he doesn’t and you never know… maybe Dalton or even Quinn will talk some sense into him. Plus tomorrow’s the wedding and a lot of people fall in love at weddings…” she said.
“Are we still talking about Josh and I? Or is there something you want to tell me?” I laughed.
She chuckled.
“We’re still talking about you and Josh,” she said, chuckling.
“Whatever, get some sleep we have to wake up early tomorrow” I said.
“Good night sis” she said
“Good night,” I replied, yawning.
Wedding day
Taryn and I woke up early to make our way to the suite so we could get ready with Emma since we were both bridesmaids.
Emma is absolutely stunning. I know for a fact that Brady will cry, Taryn and I made a bet with Matty. Once it was time to make our way to the ceremony we made our way down to meet the groomsmen, I’m walking with Quinn thankfully.
When Quinn saw me he smiled. I stood next to him so he gave me a side hug.
“You look beautiful,” he said. I smiled at him.
“Thank you, you don’t look too bad yourself” I said, making him chuckle.
The pair started making their way down the aisle, before it was our turn, Quinn leaned in my ear to whisper.
“Josh is going to try and talk to you at the reception… I promise everything will go alright, Dalton and I talked to him last night, you should hear him out” he said, I sent him a nod.
The ceremony went amazing, I cried during their vows. When Brady saw Emma walking down the aisle he cried, both Taryn and I sent him a look that said you better pay up.
After the ceremony we all made our way outside for pictures before going to the reception.
At the reception after the speeches I saw Josh looking at me. I thought about what Quinn said, it still made me nervous so I tried to ignore him until I was at least tipsy.
I talked with Kevin Hayes and his wife. They got married about a week ago, it was a beautiful wedding.
“Why is it that when I leave St. Louis you get traded there?” I asked smirking, He laughed and shrugged.
“Promise me you’ll visit when you visit home?” He asked
“I promise,” I said chuckling.
I saw Josh make his way to the balcony, I was finally tipsy so I went to the open bar to get another drink before making my way to him.
I took a deep breath before opening the door.
He was leaning on the railing looking at the sky in front of him.
I made my way and stood next to him.
It was quiet for a few minutes and I was just starting to get even more nervous so I decided to speak up.
“Quinn said you wanted to talk to me?” I asked, looking at him.
He looked at me and smiled shyly. He took a deep breath before nodding.
“I’m sorry” he said
I scoffed, is that really all he has to say?
“Sorry for what exactly?” I asked, annoyed.
He rolled his eyes
“I knew you were going to be difficult” he replied annoyed
I signed before scratching my head.
“Look Josh I’m tired of fighting with you, why are you always so mean to me?” I said sadly.
If he could just tell me why, I'll leave him alone after and he won’t have to talk to me again.
He sighed before turning to look at me fully. He was standing right in front of me. My face was inches away from his chest. I looked up at him.
“I never meant to be so mean to you, or hurt your feelings, trust me I know, i’ve heard it from our friends and my family…”
“Then why are you?” I whispered looking up at him.
He raised his hand to my cheek stroking it with his thumb.
“I’m really sorry, I really like you, always have but when we first met I thought you had a crush on Jack and I guess I was jealous and according to Quinn I was very wrong but when I finally figured out that wasn’t the case I really thought you hated me for the way I treated you so I just never stopped…” he said caressing my cheek.
I looked at his eyes, I could tell he was sorry, that he meant every word he just said.
“I never had a crush on Jack, him, Luke and Quinn have always been like brothers to me…same with your brother, you’re the one I had a crush on and Jack figured it out so he would always tease me about it when we were kids” I said chuckling.
He smiled.
I saw him look from my lips then back to my eyes.
“Can I kiss you?” He asked
“I’d like that,” I said smiling.
He leaned down and smashed his lips to mine. Our lips moved in sync. I moved my hands to his chest.
One of his hands was still on my cheek, he moved the other around my waist and pulled me closer, deepening the kiss.
Before the kiss could get too heated we pulled away breathing heavily. I smiled looking at him.
“I’ve been waiting to do that since we were 15” he said smiling. I giggled.
“I'm glad you finally did,” I said.
I saw something in the corner of my eye at the door. I pulled slightly away only to see Quinn, Jack, Luke, Matt, and Tim Stutzle, watching us.
My eyes widened, I hid my face in Josh’s chest and groaned.
“What?” He asked, chuckling.
“We have an audience” I mumbled embarrassingly. I felt him turn his head to look at the door.
“We’re never gonna live this down are we?” He asked
“Definitely not”
“Come on, we better go back inside before they start yelling at everyone,” Josh said, making me chuckle.
“Good idea” I said nodding
He kissed my forehead before grabbing my hand and pulling me inside.
I’m really happy, I don’t even think the teasing we were about to get will even ruin my mood.
I saw Jack giving money to Luke and Quinn.
“Did you guys bet on us?” Josh asked them, surprised.
“Hell yeah we did” Jack said excitedly.
“There’s more than one, Brady, Tim and I have one going with Emma and Taryn, guess the girls were right about the fact a wedding loves bringing people together” Matt said.
“You better go pay up and put Emma in a better mood and piss off Brady” I said, he laughed.
“Come on let’s go find Brady we’ll need his money too” Matt said, grabbing me by the arm and dragging me with him. I laughed while Tim and I followed behind. Josh stayed with the guys.
“You couldn’t have waited until we went to the lake house next week?” Matt asked me right before we find Brady
“Sorry Matty,” I said smiling, I'm not sorry at all.
Brady was talking with a few of his teammates, Emma was talking with some of the girls along with Taryn not far from him.
Brady turned around when we got to him.
He pulled us into a hug.
“I’m Married, can you believe it?” He said excitedly. I couldn’t stop laughing.
“Tone it down, we owe money to Taryn and Emma” Matt said
Brady's eyes widened then his jaw dropped.
“Seriously, you couldn’t have waited till next week? Did it really have to be on my wedding day?” He asked.
“Clearly your wife is okay with that,” I said, smirking.
“Yeah, yeah here” he said, handing the money to me. Matt and Tim did the same. I made my way to Emma and Taryn, they both smiled when they saw me.
“Well i’m about to make both of you very happy” I said, they looked at me confused until i showed them the money.
“You guys won the bet” I continued.
“Oh my god, Finally” Emma said, hugging me. Taryn joined us.
“We’ve all been waiting for this to happen” Taryn said
“Well I'm just glad someone believed it would.” I said, making them laugh.
“I’m pretty sure everyone believed it would, we just didn’t know when” Emma said.
“Well i’m glad that i got to help you both make a little bit of money, i’ll let you guys go back to chatting, I’ll find you both later… enjoy your wedding sis "I told Emma.
“Thanks Yn, couldn’t be happier to receive two sisters,” she said.
“Love you both” i said smiling
“We love you too, now go back to Josh “ Taryn said. I started laughing while making my way back to Josh, who smiled when he saw me.
New Jersey, Two years later.
“You may now kiss the bride” the officiant said
Josh put his hand on my waist and pulled me into a passionate kiss.
All the cheering in the back was loud.
When we pulled away, we learned our foreheads together, smiling.
“I love you Mr. Norris” I said
“I love you more Mrs. Norris” he replied
“We finally have a sister” I heard Dalton yelling in the background making me giggle.
I can’t believe I just married the love of my life, it feels like forever ago we had just confessed our feelings for each other, on this exact balcony and now we're married.
I looked behind Josh to see my Brother Brady who is one of the groomsmen, he was crying which made me laugh.
“Brady, when did you become the emotional one in the family?” I joked, he just gave me the finger, with Matty slapping his hand down.
Looks like I found a love like Brady and Emma After all, I couldn’t be happier.
