i appreciated the farscape episode that verges on this, where a colony planet with little to no genetic diversity uses a chemical during kissing to indicate the genetic safety of future children.

We don't get to see much of if this system works for the colony beyond the fact of its continued survival; the thrust of the episode for the characters is of course that love is bigger than a science thing and that the mystery of not knowing is essential to romance.

What we do see of these people is that they expect a "favourable match" to lead to a good relationship, and are either surprised when it doesn't, or think that love ultimately isn't as important as fulfilling the good match. When a match isn't favourable, they instantly drop all interest in the other person, which usually doesn't break too many hearts because the first act of any fledgling relationship is to do the kiss test.

I was trying to figure out from Wikipedia how the brain processes erogenous zones vs non-erogenous zones and I just read that apparently it's been shown on fMRIs which part of the brain corresponds to love.

So apparently it is within the realm of possibility that you could use an fMRI to determine if someone is in love with someone?

That's a weird idea, and one that begs some creative exploration. You've got a box you can use to tell if two people are in love. How does that change how relationships and society's relationship to them? How would famous stories of romance change if this technology was available?

So L and I are one episode away from Look At The Princess. And y’all - I’m not okay.

Farscape does two and three part episodes a fair amount and they do them SO FUCKING WELL and the first three part we get is Look At The Princess in season 2.

And it’s good. It’s soo good. Not just for John/Aeryn moments. Not just D’Argo and Chiana. Not just all the incredible memorable lines: “it’s not you, it’s me. I don’t like you” “Chiana and I are having amazing sex” “I haven’t had the pleasure / yes I’ve heard that about Scarrans”

It’s a powerful three episode arc and I fucking love it and this is what Farscape does best. It beats your heart up and squeezes it until it pops like a water balloon. It’s a heart smoothie force fed down your throat. It’s rearranging your organs and placing you back together without checking the instruction manual. It’s brutal and glorious and fuckkk why is it just such perfect television?

I’m not sure when we’ll watch it - we’ve got one episode before it and then it’s a three episode commitment (possibly all at once if we don’t wanna wait on the heartache) and I have plans with friends tomorrow. But it will happen. And it will happen soon. And then I will be reblogging all the Look At The Princess posts I can find because FRELL ME John and Aeryn are so hot and tragic and beautiful.
