Proper Brushing Techniques for Oral Health
Tumblr media
How to brush Properly?
Use soft-bristled toothbrush
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Wet the bristles under warm water before applying a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.
Position the toothbrush
Position the toothbrush bristles at a 45-degree angle where your gums and teeth meet. Apply gentle pressure and use short, gentle, circular scrubbing motions. Be sure to brush the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces.
2 minutes total brushing
Spend at least 2 minutes total brushing your teeth, brushing all surface areas and allowing the toothpaste enough time for the fluoride to work and help strengthen enamel. Set a timer or play a 2-minute song to ensure you brush long enough.
rinsing out your mouth
Finish by thoroughly rinsing out your mouth 2-3 times with water. Spit out the water but don't rinse with water right after brushing, as you'll wash away much of the beneficial fluoride left from the toothpaste.
Brush at least twice per day
Brush at least twice per day - morning and before bedtime are most important. Wait 30-60 minutes after eating acidic or sugary foods before brushing to avoid damaging enamel weakened temporarily by acids. Change toothbrush heads every 3 months or sooner when bristles appear frayed from wear and tear.
Following these proper tooth brushing steps daily, along with flossing, will help ensure the best oral health and dental hygiene possible. Let our Dentists in London at Thousand Smiles Dental Clinic know if you need any clarification or have additional questions!

Roger Taylor was born in Norfolk, on the east coast of England, and he spent his teens in Cornwall, the summer resort area in the southwest. His background was respectable and ordinary – “the boring middle class,” he calls it – but he’s been captivated by rock ‘n roll ever since the age of eight.
“It was like a bit of a dream then,” he says.
He started playing acoustic guitar at nine, and then when he was 12 he decided to take up drums and electric guitar. “Basically I was a frustrated guitarist,” he says. “But I seemed to be better at drums. My father just bought me a drum, and I took to it and started adding to it and found I could get along well.
Taylor was a 19-year-old dental student in London when he joined his first real band – an outfit called Smile which also included future Queen guitarist Brian May. He quit after a year of dental college because he “just couldn’t be bothered any more,” but then he decided to go back to school for a degree in biology from East London Polytechnic. But by that time Queen has been formed.
“Brian and I were very disillusioned,” he recalls. “But we had known Freddie and eventually, after about six months or so, Freddie persuaded us to start Queen working. Which we did. It was pretty hard going in the beginning. We had quite a few bass players, we went through about five or six until we found John, who was the only one who really fit in.” And after that came the problem of finding the right contract, which wasn’t accomplished until 18 months after the band’s formation, when they hooked up with the new production arm of Trident Studios.
“We wanted to do it right. We wanted the right contract with the right people. So we were really very careful. I think we could’ve moved a bit quicker, but I think that probably was the best idea. It took a lot of patience, a lot of faith, but we got a pretty good deal in the end. We were offered quite a lot of deals by virtually every major company over here, but this really seemed like the best thing to go for at the time.”

11th March 1932 saw the birth of Binkie Stuart, the child film actress, in Kilmarnock.
Born Elizabeth Alison Fraser in Kilmarnock, to a musician father and actress mother, the blonde youngster was named "London's Most Beautiful Baby" at the age of two. After she won first prize in a Daily Mail competition in 1935, her father became her full-time manager and arranged for her to audition for film director Monty Banks, who wanted a child for his next film, a George Formby vehicle, Keep Your Seats Please.
The child's character was called "Binkie" in the film, and the name was appropriated for the young star, who was billed as "Binkie Stuart" he surname coming from her Scottish ancestry.
The movie's musical highlight was Formby's rendition of his famous hit, "When I'm Cleaning Windows". Stuart did a short table-top version of "I'm on the Tip of my Toes" which was strained and tentative, and all her major lines of dialogue were filmed in isolated close-up. The producer Basil Dean had tried to dissuade Banks from using her, maintaining that she was too young but, despite her obvious inexperience, her winsome personality and cute smile endeared her to audiences. Other minor films followed, but none of note
Until Stuart's biggest role in My Irish Molly, the last film made by Maureen O'Hara before her departure to the United States. As an orphan mistreated (yet again) by a domineering aunt, Stuart stole the film, described by one critic as "a Shirley Temple flick without Temple", but the advent of war prevented a planned trip to Hollywood and her film career came to an abrupt halt. Later there was some friction with her father when she rejected his plans for her to become a variety performer on the music-hall stage, insisting instead that she would become a dramatic actress.
She worked as a dental receptionist and, after a further unsuccessful attempt to become an actress in her mid-twenties, she became an assistant in an electrical store, where she met her husband John Prentice. The couple had three children, and Prentice died in 1980, after which Alison Prentice, as she had become, worked as a telephonist and a nurse.
She died on 15th August 2001, aged 69, it’s a shame there are no pics of her when she was older, and had World War Two not got in the way, who knows how she would have got on in Hollywood?

Getting Together (7) Masterlist
part one, part two, part three, part four, part five, part six
a game of chance (ao3) - danhoweiis
Summary: Phil worked at Chance and Counters, a board game cafe in North East London. One definite perk of the last few weeks had been the guy who Phil was now delivering a coffee too. Phil had been smitten from the second he stepped through the door which was something he now wished he hadn’t told his friend and manger Nate, so he could have saved himself being teased every time Cute Dan (as Phil had affectionately called him after overhearing someone say his name) came in
A Perfect Pair (ao3) - husbants
Summary: Dan, a struggling actor who works retail by day, and Phil, an ex-YouTuber-turned-porn-star, end up matched together on the new reality show, Perfect Pair.
cat got your tongue? (ao3) - megiaolf
Summary: A near wholesome cat cafe au.
Communication Is Key (ao3) - philsmeatylegss
Summary: In which au Dan and Phil are friends with benefits despite the fact that neither of them want to be friends with benefits and Dan just sucks at talking about his feelings
company policy (ao3) - watergator (orphan_account)
Summary: dan works in a bakery-by-day, gay club-by-night bar. phil owns said bar. things happen.
dan is not a pianist (ao3) - Marranje
Summary: How Phil went from watching the pianist and youtuber Dan from afar to being by his side through the most important moments of their lives.
Fade into View (ao3) - nic0ler
Summary: Phil works as a receptionist and he loves it. Dan works as an editor for a fashion magazine and he kind of hates it. Dans really pretty and Phil notices. Dan doesn't notice Phil, until one day, Phil makes himself noticed by everyone.
fade to black (ao3) - sierraadeux
Summary: That’s the thing about Phil. He’s a tease.
or
films, flirting, and other things that start with f.
knight of wands (ao3) - dizzy
Summary: Some days are just boring.
(And some aren't.)
linger on (ao3) - dizzy, waveydnp
Summary: A recent loss has ground Phil's life to a halt. At 33, he's static in his grief and living in the house he grew up in - until his mother kicks him out.
In a fit of indignation and with nothing to lose, he answers the first listing he finds for a room to rent in London... a listing posted by a guy named Dan.
more than convenient (ao3) - baroquen
Summary: In which Dan keeps seeing Phil as the closest profile on Grindr and finally says "fuck it."
(Except it's very sappy)
Neighbourly Nook (ao3) - wednesday_ukiru
Summary: The stranger had a dimple on his cheek that appeared when he laughed.
“I’m Dan,” he said, extending his hand. Phil reached for it with extreme eagerness, their knuckles knocking together in a particularly painful way, and they both winced, but Dan immediately broke into a smile. “I don’t know why I offered you a handshake, I never know how to do them.”
Orally Fixated On You (ao3) - dickiegreenleaf
Summary: Dan's a stickler for oral hygiene. He brushes twice a day, flosses religiously, and makes sure to go to the dentist every six months. His strict dental regimen has nothing to do with the way it feels when he's got tools scraping his gums, and it certainly has nothing to do with his adorable dental hygienist.
Revolving Door (ao3) - intoapuddle
Summary: Phil really doesn’t want to think about what Dan said. He really would like to leave, and take this strangled feeling elsewhere. But he can’t stop listening to Dan’s song.
scratch bark bite (oh, love me, i lied) (ao3) - Tarredion
Summary: Music & Drama teacher Dan Howell has a well-known rivalry with his coworker, English teacher Phil Lester.
An unforeseen event flips everything Dan thought he knew about Phil and himself on its head. Slowly but surely, the grudge withers, and the two of them cross the line between enemy and friend. But what will happen when their true intents and feelings get revealed? And was what they had ever really a rivalry? Was it even mutual?
Soft Speak with a Mean Streak (ao3) - Nefertiti1052 (Succubusphan)
Summary: Phil was a lonely film student; Dan was a mysterious new classmate he got stuck in with for a big project. It was only a matter of time and the right circumstances.
Take a Picture (It'll Last Longer) (ao3) - phantasticworks (steddieworks)

The Boy And The Builder (ao3) - intoapuddle, jestbee
Summary: Dan is stuck in a house full of builders feeling sorry for himself. Until he meets Phil, that is...
The Problem With Travelling During The Holidays (ao3) - Nefertiti1052 (Succubusphan)
Summary: Dan is in a tricky situation, running to catch his connecting flight with no other than his annoying enemy right on his heels. If he could just get on the plane and be away from Lester that would save Christmas.
Luckily for Dan, things don't tend to go his way.
The River (ao3) - Portia331
Summary: Dan arrived in Melbourne two weeks ago with just one suitcase crammed with running gear, psychology textbooks, and a mere fraction of his wardrobe especially curated to fit both his aesthetic and the Melbourne weather.
He's about to start in the role of a lifetime on a 12 month contract, but he's barely ready for the Australian summer heat, let alone what the world is about to throw at him.
vacation getaway (ao3) - angelmichelangelo
Summary: phil burns easily, but that soon proves to be not such a bad thing
what might come with the dawn (ao3) - cloud-gays (wind_brewed)
Summary: The Island has a Guardian, that's what people say. Phil doesn't know if this guardian is a mythical being or just a piece of gossip; a made-up story to make people feel safe during storm season. A made-up story just to make them feel secure.
Now that he decides to move in with his parents again, Phil needs the protection. Maybe he needs to reach out to this lonely, black-clothed being; reach out to the lonely man of winter.
Also called: Phil is a storm-chaser of sorts and Dan, a storm-magnet. In between running and hiding, they find each other inside the calm of the storm.

There aren’t many scenarios in which getting a good look at a bunch of Komodo dragon teeth ends well. The massive lizard’s mouth holds 60 serrated teeth, each up to an inch long, that get replenished throughout the creature’s life. And dangling from the serrations are the remains of previous meals, plus dozens of bacteria that feast on them.
To be fair, Aaron LeBlanc, a paleontologist at King’s College London, got his close look at Komodo dragon teeth minus the grizzly decor and detached from their ferocious owners. His examinations paid off. “Every now and then, I would see this sort of orange discoloration to the outer layer of the teeth,” LeBlanc says. “I honestly probably saw it three, four times and just dismissed it as staining from feeding.”
But closer inspection proved that the orange hue LeBlanc saw on the serrations and tips of Komodo dragon teeth was iron that was present before they ever took a bite. The result, described in research published on July 24 in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution, is the first confirmed finding of iron chompers in reptiles. (Some fish and salamanders, as well as a handful of mammals—most notably beavers—are also known to include iron in their teeth.)
Tumblr media
Close-up images showing orange serrations running down the front and back of a Komodo dragon tooth.
Komodo dragons, which can grow up to 10 feet long and live on a few islands in Indonesia, are typical reptiles in terms of teeth replacement, LeBlanc says. “They’re basically tooth factories,” he adds. The tip of each pointed tooth curves back into the animal’s mouth, which allows it to tear off and swallow large chunks of meat. And the iron reinforcement is strategic as well, LeBlanc says. The orange detailing precisely marks a single line of serration running down the front and back of each tooth—with the serrations more pronounced on the back—and marks the tooth’s tip: puncture, pull, swallow, repeat.
LeBlanc was drawn to the giant lizards’ teeth because of their pointed, curved profile, which would look at home in the smiles of even more fearsome animals: dinosaurs. Such comparisons are a valuable approach for paleontologists, Brink notes. “When we’re studying fossils, especially when we’re trying to interpret behaviors which we can no longer observe because the animals are dead, we have to look to modern analogues,” she says.
Inspired by the Komodo dragon finding, LeBlanc and his colleagues looked for signs of similar iron reinforcement in the teeth of other living reptiles and dinosaurs. They discovered that a few different species of monitor lizards had the adaptation, though to a lesser extent, and that some crocodilians showed signs of iron in their teeth as well. For the dinosaur teeth, the team found iron throughout, but think it was likely deposited from the fossilization process, given the abundance of iron on Earth’s surface. “Iron is probably the worst thing to look at in fossil reptile teeth,” LeBlanc says. “If you bury a dinosaur tooth in the ground for tens of millions of years, iron will eventually seep into every nook and cranny.”
Still, he and Brinks agree, the research suggests that scientists should take a closer look at teeth in living reptiles and dinosaurs alike, with eyes peeled for unexpected dental adaptations like those of the Komodo dragon. “We shouldn’t take for granted how complex reptile teeth can be,” LeBlanc says.
A version of this article entitled “Iron Chompers” was adapted for inclusion in the November 2024 issue of Scientific American.
