Proper Brushing Techniques for Oral Health
How to brush Properly?
Use soft-bristled toothbrush
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Wet the bristles under warm water before applying a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.
Position the toothbrush
Position the toothbrush bristles at a 45-degree angle where your gums and teeth meet. Apply gentle pressure and use short, gentle, circular scrubbing motions. Be sure to brush the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces.
2 minutes total brushing
Spend at least 2 minutes total brushing your teeth, brushing all surface areas and allowing the toothpaste enough time for the fluoride to work and help strengthen enamel. Set a timer or play a 2-minute song to ensure you brush long enough.
rinsing out your mouth
Finish by thoroughly rinsing out your mouth 2-3 times with water. Spit out the water but don't rinse with water right after brushing, as you'll wash away much of the beneficial fluoride left from the toothpaste.
Brush at least twice per day
Brush at least twice per day - morning and before bedtime are most important. Wait 30-60 minutes after eating acidic or sugary foods before brushing to avoid damaging enamel weakened temporarily by acids. Change toothbrush heads every 3 months or sooner when bristles appear frayed from wear and tear.
Following these proper tooth brushing steps daily, along with flossing, will help ensure the best oral health and dental hygiene possible. Let our Dentists in London at Thousand Smiles Dental Clinic know if you need any clarification or have additional questions!

Unwind (Modern!AU) (Ebenezer/Constance)
A short little fic about being warm and cozy because it is WAYYY too cold to go outside where I am, haha.
Rated PG-13 for (descriptions of) nudity, and suggestive themes. Just two adult sharing a bath, haha~
The door to Ebenezer Scrooge’s London flat opened, and immediately, the biting cold of the outdoors streets and the stress clients and bank reports was forgotten.
It was Friday, and he was arriving home amidst a heavy snowfall, and his phone already silenced. The only company he cared to converse with that night was right beside him, her arm threaded through his while he keyed into the apartment.
“Bloody hell, what a week," he sighed.
The words practically melted into existence, the exhaustion that permeated his being done-deep and caustic as acid.
A softer, feminine voice followed his exhausted one. “At least it’s over for today.”
That was true. The sunset brought respite from the bustle of running London’s most prestigious private banking business.
Millions in funds exchanged hands over his desk (and through their office's Wi-Fi network) every day; even after decades in the practice, he still wasn’t used to it. That wasn’t to say he was ungrateful for all the business. Far from it. After all, it was how he was able to send six-digit donation numbers into philanthropic and humanitarian efforts across London and beyond. Yet, it was overwhelming some days, he had to admit. It actually hurt to ponder sometimes, the sheer responsibility of it all permeating his mind with the precision of a dental drill.
At least, just like his fiancée has said, the trials were over. For today.
As if to provide him further relief, Constance drifted from his side to help remove his coat. “I know. How about we share a bubble bath?”
There were few better ways to melt away the stress of the day than filling up his flat’s clawfoot tub and soaking in it.
After she removed his Loro Piana black wool trench coat, he motioned to return the favor. He slid the fur-trimmed Vivienne Westwood coat off her shoulders and propped in on the coatrack, then gently dusted the spare snowflakes from her fiery locks of hair.
“That might be the best proposition I’ve heard all day,” he teased, leaning in to kiss her cheek. Her laugh as his lips caressed her frozen skin was nothing short of musical.
He was feeling less tense already.
They walked hand-in-hand across the living room to the flat's spacious, ensuite bathroom. Along the way, the left their shoes near the door and their bags (two suitcases, one charcoal black and the other a freshly-baked shade of brown) propped against the master's bedroom's ajar door.
"Now, this is one of the best parts of coming home," she said as she approached the bathroom's spacious vanity. She reached back to remove the bobby pins and elastic that held her hair into a slicked-back bun. With a sigh, she let her hair down and bent over her knife her fingers through her copper hair, tousling it into messy glory. “Oooh, that feels so nice.”
Ebenezer gave her a teasing look as he walked to the tub and began to run the water at the temperature he knew they liked. He gave the cold water tap a 45-degree twist, and the hot water one three turns of the wrist. He checked the temperature with a swipe of his fingers. Sure enough, it was perfect.
Reaching up to a golden tray with marble handles that was perched on the windowsill over the tub, he produced an orange blossom bath bomb and passion fruit bubble oil. He tossed the brightly colored orb into the water, and it began to tumble and froth immediately. Mere seconds passed before the room was filled with the aromatic blend of orange and vanilla.
One last drizzle of the oil made the water glisten warmly in anticipation of its guests.
Once that was done, he turned back to see Constance had undressed fully, her skirt, hose and blouse all melding together in a pool at her feet.
They’d been together many months, and yet, he still found himself agape at her beauty. He knew he would always be stunned into a state of disbelief by her elegance.
She was tanner than him by a few shades. She seemed to absorb the sun’s rays effortlessly and just glow from inside out, from the top of her copper-colored head to the tips of her pedicured toes. In addition to being glowing like a goddess, she was sculpted like one as well. It was difficult to not leer, though she’d given him enthusiastic permission to do so. The tabloid writers that wrote smartass and derogatory captions about the cellulite on her bum and thighs didn't have a clue about womanly beauty, as far as he was concerned.
When she glanced over her shoulder and saw him staring, still perched at the edge of the tub, she giggled and walked over to him. Even after all these years, she still walked like a model, miles of bronze skin and tumbling locks on full display with each sway of her hips. Not to mention, best of all, a radiant smile that made his inside weak and his heart ache in longing.
She stopped before him, his eyes level with the tips of her ample breasts. Gently, she guided his face up with one hand while the other worked the top buttons of his shirt. It was only when her hand could no longer reach the lower buttons and she cleared her throat that he stood to help her. His own hands lofted to undo the remaining pearl snaps, but she had the honor of pushing the crisp white fabric off his wide shoulders and down those lightly muscled forearms.
Watching the planes of hair-dusted skin move as he shifted out of his shirt made her eyes glaze with mesmerized intrigue. When he was under the adoration of her lake-colored gaze, he felt more desirable than he’d ever felt before. Regardless of how he felt about himself on any given day, (with his wrinkles, his salt-and-pepper hair) she ogled him like a seven-course meal, rendering any and all insecurities beyond moot.
She made him feel like an Adonis, and she was his Aphrodite, pining over him and caressing him into embraces that were possible to resist.
With his shirt gone, her hands rested atop his chest, fingers tapping his flesh in rhythm to his heartbeat. He reached down and undid his belt, watching her flesh prickle with gooseflesh and the clasp clinked with release. One hand tugged the belt from his pant loops and tossed it to the marble floor. The other undid the clasp and zipper at the crotch of his trousers.
“That’s it,” Constance urged, fingers giving his pectorals a squeeze. “Just like that.”
Good Lord, he almost moaned at the praise! Bending to kick the pants away and tug off his socks, she bent down and placed a kiss on the bare back of his neck. “Glorious, glorious man.”
When he unfurled upright, an arm went about her waist and hauled her close for a kiss.
Even her kisses tasted of warmth, amber and womanly musk. Maker, how was she real?
As their lips and mouths melded, Constance hooked her thumbs into the band of his boxer briefs and gave them a swift tug down. He broke the kiss against to ease out of those as well, but immediately rejoined her, which earned a gasp of delight. Her arms wound about his neck, fingers loosening the pomade-slicked coiffure in his silvery hair.
Upon breaking the kiss for air, he gazed upon her pleasantly dazed expression with confidence and delight. “My glorious, glorious goddess.”
Taking a ginger step backward, he guided her toward the tub with an extended arm, their hands remaining clasped together for the entirety of the short journey. The body heat from their grasp made the warm of her engagement band practically brand him, and he adored it.
She followed like a snake charmed by a flute and slinked into the large tub first. She looked at home in the glittering water, like Venus rising from the tides. He followed, filling the void of space beside her.
As they eased into the steaming water, the tension from the day melted away as she nestled into his lap. Using his chest as a pillow, she leaned back, and he idly toyed with her hair, peppering random kissed along her face, neck and shoulders.
He flexed his long legs out, feeling the hot water ease the stress out of his muscles almost instantly. The feeling of her body, alive and breathing atop him, brought even more peace to his soul.
The room was silent, the only sounds coming from the London traffic outside the fogged window and the occasional sound of water lapping at the edges of the tub when one shifted their weight. One could almost go to sleep. Hell, he likely would have, if there wasn’t also a light ache of hunger in his stomach.
“What do you want for dinner, love?” he asked gently, pressing a kiss to the shell of her ear.
“Hm…” she hummed, eyes falling shut. “How about we try that new Caribbean takeaway place? I saw a sign in the window saying they deliver.”
His head fell back in relief. “Perfect.”
She giggled, lifting her foot out of the tub playfully. She watched the perfumed bubbles roll down her calf in shimmering trails. “Not in the mood to leave the flat?”
“Not the flat. Not this tub. Not you.”
Two strong arms lifted out of the water, soap bubbles running in rivulets down his hair-dusted skin, he wrapped his arms around her belly. His hands rested over the pudge there (something she’d felt much more comfortable about showing him after having some time to breathe from the modeling industry). His lips skimmed the back of her shoulders, running over the water droplets that lingered there.
“Hmm…” she said, peachy glossed lips grinning. “That might be the best proposition I’ve heard all day.”
The jest earned an impish growl. His grip tightened, giving her only a hint at his intentions. “Come here, you minx.”
As expected, he didn’t let her rest long. With swoon-worthy ease, he rolled his body so that she slipped beneath him in the tub. His wider frame covered her easily, arms caging her. He was aided by his hands finding purchase against the edge of the tub, despite how the passion fruit oil from the bath had otherwise slicked their bodies. That, he thought with a smirk, would be helpful in other ways.
Head thrown back in laughter, she welcomed this bout of necking, basking in the glory of him, and the warm cocoon around them, all the while.
@quill-pen Just an innocent little bath. ☀️

Because I am evidently a masochist, I am taking advantage of this little break in other bullshit appointments by...trying in earnest to finally get in to see a dentist. 😰
Given the fact that I know I have at least a couple of problems that need to get fixed after those years of uncontrolled blood sugar, and the whole "local anesthetics not working right" bendy person situation? It does seem better to go for a dental practice that WILL do sedation worst case, right from the get-go. Thankfully I did find one of those in town, with good reviews to boot--and a decent online booking system. Now I just need to make sure Mr. C is OK ferrying me there, and when might be workable. 🫤
Also, dental stuff really does seem to be expensive af here. Almost as bad as back in the US. But, that really can't be avoided if I want to keep my teeth--which I kinda do! Already ended up losing two molars in London, and one of my front teeth is having an obvious problem now. (Which is thankfully not visible unless I bare them at people like a disgruntled chimp. Admittedly tempting to do sometimes, but I do try to refrain.)

'Glad All Over (Cake By The Ocean)', Chapter One
Summary: Nyssa Traken, a dentist from London, finds herself in the small Cornish town of Tregonnereth. While initially in the town for a short break from the big city, upon meeting Tegan Jovanka (a jack-of-all-trades), Nyssa begins to find herself falling in love with the charms of the close-knit local community (and maybe a certain someone as well)...
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here's my new multi-chapter fic, everyone! I hope you enjoy it! I've been wanting to write a chill, cosy, slice-of-life rom-com for a while, so I hope you enjoy it! This won't have so much of a dedicated release schedule, but -given the more relaxed pace of this fic- I think that fits it quite well.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Read on AO3.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Nyssa Traken sighed, stretching her toes out on the sand.
To be honest, when she had started her working week that Monday in London, she hadn’t been expecting to end it sat on a beach, in Tregonnereth, a small town in Cornwall. For one thing, she had a job in London.
But her job as a dentist was growing increasingly unfulfilling. Dental practices across the country were becoming increasingly geared towards the rich, with a noticeable reduction in patients from the NHS. It saddened Nyssa; one of the greatest health services on the planet was being broken up piecemeal and sold off to private companies for profit.
Nyssa, the daughter of a dyed-in-the-wool Welsh trade-unionist, felt an immense sense of anger towards the people responsible for this.
Many dentists were either leaving the profession, or moving abroad for better pay. She’d read somewhere that, in the decade since 2010, the amount of dentists throughout the UK had severely declined, especially outside of major cities.
Nyssa sighed again, drawing her knees up in front of her and wrapped her arms around her legs.
So, why Cornwall? Why this particular town in Cornwall?
To be honest, Nyssa had only been to this place once. On a family holiday when she was a small girl. Her parents had taken her here to get away from London, from the noise and frantic pace of life. Nyssa remembered walking with her parents along the sandy beach, looking forward to the promised ice cream for a mid-afternoon snack.
It was the last holiday they had been on, just the three of them.
Nyssa let out a small sigh, staring out to sea. It was a calm day, and the first signs of summer sunshine were peaking through the clouds. Whenever she had looked at weather forecasts, it had always seemed as if Cornwall got an astonishing amount of both rain and sunshine. Mercifully, today was highlighting the latter.
She imagined she probably looked a rather strange sight; a woman sat on the sand in a suit (the fabric of her waistcoat, of course, contrasted nicely with the Edwardian-styled knee-length skirt, the jacket having been tidily folded into Nyssa’s bag due to the warmer weather). But she found it difficult to care; the sand was dry and this suit had done her in good stead for years. The warm wind was pleasant on her exposed forearms, as she had smartly folded the sleeves of her blouse up to her elbows.
There was a buzz in Nyssa’s leather messenger bag. Frowning slightly, she rummaged through the contents, past her jacket and socks, and extracted her phone.
‘Hi, Mel,’ she said, climbing getting to her feet. It was more comfortable to walk on sand barefoot anyway.
‘Nyssa, where exactly are you?’ came the confused voice of Mel Bush. She was both a friend and a colleague; the two of them had even been housemates for a while at one point.
‘Er… Cornwall.’
Nyssa heard the redhead take a large intake of breath.
‘Why are you in Cornwall? You barely like going further than the M25!’
‘I…’ Nyssa put her head in her other hand, as she walked along the beach. It was so deserted that she wasn’t concerned about her shoes being stolen, as she might have been back in London. The sea breeze ruffled her Gibson-Girl-inspired up-do of brown hair. ‘I… I needed somewhere quiet.’
‘And… you decided on a seven-hour drive through the West-Country instead of just going to a park?’ Mel asked, sounding concerned. ‘Nyssa, is something wrong?’
Nyssa sighed, grateful for the worry her friend was showing.
‘I’m sick of practicing in London, Mel,’ she said. ‘Looking into the mouths of rich people who just want their teeth whitened and spend half their time in the surgery treating the clerical staff like rubbish. Our NHS patients can’t afford our fees, and I’m not high-up enough to do anything to help them. I just… I feel like I’m not helping anyone doing what I’m doing.’
Mel made sounds of sympathy.
‘Maybe Cornwall will be good for you. Wellness, and all that.’
Nyssa chuckled. Mel was a bit of a keep-fit nut, and her latest interest was a combination of mindful meditation mixed with yoga.
‘The sea breeze is pretty nice here,’ she said, looking out through the waves. ‘There’s no traffic. No taxi drivers yelling at each other. And the air is so clean.’
‘Hey, you focus on you,’ Mel said. ‘Have a nice long weekend, and do that breathing technique I recommended the other day.’
Nyssa chuckled.
‘I’ll try, Mel. Thank you.’
‘No problem,’ Mel replied, warmly. ‘See you next week; bye!’
‘Bye.’
Nyssa hung up, placed her phone in her bag, and turned around, heading back to where she had been sat.
Both her shoes were missing. In their place was the tide.
‘Drat!’
Nyssa hurried forward. Sure enough, she couldn’t see a thing. Well, shoes probably didn’t float, so that was unsurprising. Still…
Nyssa sat down on the sand, and groaned. Yes, she could always buy another pair, but that pair had seen her through so much. They were a good pair of shoes; comfortable yet smart. Nyssa had always been very particular about her personal belongings; when she wore something out, she tended to just replace it with something either identical or something very similar. It was the way she had always been-
Thud.
Nyssa’s shoes landed on the sand.
‘These yours?’
Nyssa looked up.
A woman was standing in front of her. She was a couple of inches shorter than Nyssa, wearing a wetsuit. Her hair -shortly cropped- was wet and swept back to keep it out of her eyes. Her bicep bulged under the material of the wetsuit as she held a surfboard under her arm, and her stance on the sand was confident yet relaxed. Her accent was Australian, and Nyssa could see herself reflected in those large brown eyes.
‘Y-yes!’ Nyssa stammered, stumbling to her feet and picking up the shoes. ‘That’s-how-thank you- I-’
‘They washed up on my board,’ the woman said, not seeming to notice Nyssa’s flusteredness. ‘I’m guessing they got caught by the tide?’
Nyssa nodded.
‘Thank you; that’s very kind of you.’
The woman shrugged.
‘They almost stabbed me in the eye! You need to be more careful what you’re doing with your shoes.’
Nyssa stared at the woman, startled.
‘I… they just got swept out-’
‘You can’t just leave your shoes lying around when the tide is coming in,’ continued the woman, clearly irritated. ‘What if this had gotten stuck in the fishing nets- hang on, are you from London?’
‘Yes, I am!’ Nyssa exclaimed, feeling very thrown off. ‘How could you tell?’
‘Just a feeling,’ the woman said, wiping her nose with her free hand. ‘Most locals don’t tend to wear suits on the beach.’
Nyssa frowned, feeling irritated by the woman’s tone.
‘You’re being rather rude.’
‘This, coming from the person who almost blinded a surfer with her shoes. Whatever, just be more careful in future.’
Without so much as a backward look, the woman walked off, her board under her arm, leaving a trail of wet footprints in the sand and a very angry Londoner.
Nyssa turned, fists clenched as she sat down on the sand. The cheek!
*
Eventually, once she had cooled down (that breathing technique of Mel’s was surprisingly effective), Nyssa put her now-dried shoes on her feet, left the beach, headed across the road, and into the café. It wasn’t a chain shop, but she didn’t really mind; coffee was coffee.
The place was well-made-up, with lots of seaside paintings on the walls. There was no queue at the counter, although a couple of teenagers were sat in the back.
‘One cappuccino,’ Nyssa said, as she approached the counter, rooting in her bag for her purse. ‘I think I’ve got some spare change here-’
‘Don’t tell me you lost that in the surf too?’ came a familiar voice.
Nyssa looked up.
‘You again!’
‘My name is Tegan, actually,’ said the Australian, who had presumably changed from her wetsuit into a black shirt, trousers and a matching apron. Not that Nyssa was taking notice, of course. ‘D’you want that cappuccino with dairy or non-dairy?’
‘Er... non-dairy,’ Nyssa replied. ‘Thank you.’
‘No worries,’ said the woman called Tegan.
‘Er, sorry about earlier,’ Nyssa said, slowly. ‘I… well, I’ve been having a rather strange day, and I took it out on you.’
‘I kinda gathered,’ Tegan said, chuckling a little. ‘Apology accepted. What’s your name?’
‘E-er,’ Nyssa said, suddenly feeling flustered. ‘I-’
‘It’s for the cappuccino,’ Tegan said, without missing a beat.
‘Nyssa,’ said Nyssa.
‘With a ‘y’?’
Nyssa nodded.
‘Welsh family, I take it.’
Nyssa repeated her nod.
Tegan chuckled, bemused.
‘Do baristas not talk much in London, then?’
‘Not really.’
‘Sounds rough.’
The Australian began making the cappuccino. Her biceps strained slightly against the fabric of her button-up shirt as she worked the coffee machine. Nyssa blinked quickly, feeling rather warm all of a sudden.
‘So… Nyssa with a y,’ Tegan said, mouth twitching into a lopsided smile as passed over the coffee, and then leant against the counter. ‘What’s a big-city girl like you doing in Tregonnereth? Most tourists don’t arrive until later in the summer.’
Nyssa took a sip of the coffee. It was just right; not scalding, but warm enough to taste good.
‘Needed some quiet,’ she said, inbetween sips as she started to drain the mug. ‘London can be… a bit much.’
‘So I’ve heard.’
Nyssa finished the mug, and placed it back on the counter.
‘Thank you; that was lovely.’
‘No worries,’ Tegan said, smiling as she moved the mug away. ‘Would you like a cookie? We get them from the bakery in the high street.’
‘No, thank you,’ Nyssa said. ‘Too much sugar.’
‘Let me guess; you’re a dentist?’
‘Er… yes, why?’
Tegan shrugged.
‘You look like a scientist to me.’
‘Well, I did train as a doctor initially.’
‘Gotcha,’ Tegan cheeked, grinning. ‘You’ve got that vibe. Like you read science textbooks for fun. But -then again- I read airplane manuals for fun, so I suppose I’m not one to talk.’
Nyssa suddenly found herself snorting with laughter.
The Australian grinned, as she watched the Londoner double over with a fit of the giggles.
‘There we go,’ Tegan said. ‘Something tells me you needed a laugh, right?’
‘Y-yes,’ Nyssa gasped, mouth stretching into a smile ‘I did. How could you tell?’
Tegan shrugged.
‘Just a guess. You were carrying a lot of stress in your shoulders. Stress that I may have inadvertently added to, now that I think about it,’ -the Australian grimaced apologetically- ‘Sorry.’
Nyssa waved a hand.
‘It’s fine. You weren’t to know. And you made me laugh, so I would say we’ve even.’
‘Is that how it works?’
‘Yes. Equal and opposite reactions. Trust me,’ Nyssa said, smiling. ‘I’m a scientist.’
Tegan grinned.
‘See you around, Nyssa.’
‘Thank you… Tegan.’
Nyssa smiled, softly, as she turned and headed out the door. As it shut behind her, she couldn’t help but feel strangely buoyed, as if she had been given a second wind. Well, a pretty Australian smiling at you might well do that, she supposed.
She headed up Tregonnereth’s high street, away from the main harbour. It sloped upwards at a decent rate, meaning that Nyssa felt herself begin to tire as she approached a small square situated roughly halfway up the slope.
A fair-sized building (presumably the town hall) faced the square, with another side being taken up by a church. In the middle of the square was a war memorial and -stood in front of the memorial- was a group of children. There was all roughly school age, between nine and fifteen, and were all staring at a woman. The woman, dressed in a skirt, blouse and cardigan, had a commanding presence, like teachers Nyssa had known when she was at school herself, and possibly in her early forties. It was difficult to tell, as she had one of those beautiful ageless faces.
‘Now,’ said the woman, speaking to the children. ‘As you all know, Tregonnereth has existed for almost a thousand years, in one capacity or another. Can anyone hazard a guess as to why?’
‘Near to Plymouth?’ a young girl asked.
‘Partially, yes,’ replied the woman. ‘The trade heading along the Tamar valley passes here, and so there has always been a harbour of sorts.’
‘Not much here now,’ muttered a boy.
‘Oh, that’s not entirely true,’ said the woman. ‘Well, granted, the dental practice has closed, the library is now a mobile library and the GP surgery is on reduced hours, but-’
‘No cinema, no good shops-’
‘Yes, thank you, Andrew,’ interrupted the woman, frowning at the teenager who had spoken. ‘I will grant you that things are rather sparce in the town as of late, but you shouldn’t be pessimistic about it.’
The church bells rang for six.
‘Okay; let’s leave it here for today,’ said the woman, clapping her hands together. ‘All of you, make sure your parents know about the next town meeting, alright?’
There was a chorus of agreement, and the children dispersed, heading into the streets nearby.
As the children hurried away, the woman noticed Nyssa and walked across the square towards her, a warm smile on her face.
‘Hello, I’m Barbara Wright,’ the woman said, reaching out and shaking Nyssa’s hand. ‘Hope you didn’t mind my lecture; I’m one of the teachers at the school here.’
‘Nyssa Traken,’ Nyssa replied. ‘And I didn’t mind at all. I found it very interesting, actually.’
‘Thank you,’ Barbara gave a kind smile. ‘Oh, that’s a lovely name, by the way; are you old Cornish?’
‘Er, my father’s Welsh,’ Nyssa said.
‘Still Celtic,’ Barbara replied. ‘People often say that, when they come to Cornwall, it’s like coming home.’
Nyssa nodded, thoughtfully.
‘I was curious about something,’ Nyssa said. ‘Tregonnereth doesn’t seem to have a dental practice?’
Barbara sighed.
‘I’m afraid so. It’s the same in a lot of rural places nowadays; I’m afraid there just isn’t the population needed to keep a practice open. At least, that’s the official reason we were given.’
‘People still want a dental practice, surely?’
‘Absolutely; not everyone can drive to Plymouth or Truro, and -for the elderly- it’s not that easy to get the bus.’
Barbara sighed, folding her arms.
‘I wouldn’t say it in front of the children, but I am concerned about the town’s future. There’s nothing here for young people; most move to the nearest cities when they leave school, and the ones that leave for university rarely return- oh, hello, Tegan.’
Nyssa startled, as the Australian came to stand next to her.
‘Hi Barbara,’ Tegan said. She was now wearing a pair of dungarees over her black shirt, the sleeves of which she had folded up to her elbows. ‘I see you’ve met Nyssa with a y.’
Nyssa felt her face burn at the nickname.
‘Yes,’ Barbara said, clearly noticing Nyssa’s reaction but deliberately not saying anything. She gestured to Tegan. ‘Nyssa Traken, this is Tegan Jovanka; our resident… jack-of-all-trades, I suppose. Tegan, Nyssa and I were discussing things in the town; you remember how the dental practice closed down back in February.’
‘Hang on, weren’t you a dentist back in London?’ Tegan said, turning to Nyssa. ‘Why don’t you start our local practice up again?’
Nyssa stared at her.
‘What?’ Tegan asked. ‘You could do it! The building is owned by the town itself, so the rent is basically none-existent.’
‘Oh, that would be wonderful!’ Barbara said, smiling widely. ‘That would mean so much to us! But… are you sure? We are a long way from London, and I understand the change from the capital to a small town would be a big ask.’
Nyssa looked, between Barbara’s barely-disguised delight and Tegan’s encouraging smile, and found herself unable to mount a counter-argument.
Well… she had been growing tired of working in London, after all. It wasn’t as if she had much to go back for; her father had moved back to Wales years ago and, with the exception of Mel, Nyssa didn’t really have any friends back in London.
‘I… well, I’d have to see the practice,’ she said, slowly.
Tegan grinned, and Barbara smiled even wider.
‘It’s just down the road,’ Tegan said. ‘C’mon; I’ll show you the way-’
Without warning, she reached out and took Nyssa’s hand. Nyssa felt the heat rise in her cheeks, but she found herself unable or unwilling to resist Tegan pulling her away. She cast one last quick look at Barbara, who gave a rather knowing smile.
*
The premises for the old practice had definitely seen better days, she had to admit.
Granted, it wasn’t the roof was falling in, but the place had definitely not had much TLC in a long while. The front door urgently needed painting, and the grass outside was very overgrown.
‘What do you reckon?’ Tegan said, smiling at Nyssa. She had dropped Nyssa’s hand as they had come to a stop in front of the practice, and didn’t seem to have noticed Nyssa’s flusteredness. ‘Great location; just off the high street, but far away from the road to avoid the noise. The town’s car park isn’t too far away, either.’
Nyssa stared at the building.
‘The place would need a lot done to it,’ she said. ‘I mean, the pipes probably need seeing to, and then there’s the matter of getting it redecorated-’
There was a flutter, as Tegan opened her wallet. A long chain of licenses descended halfway to the ground.
Nyssa’s mouth fell open.
‘Carpentry, interior designer… even plumber?’
‘I’ll consider myself hired,’ Tegan said, grinning cheerfully as she closed up the wallet. ‘Shall we have a look?’
Nyssa stared at the woman, mouth still hanging open.
‘You amaze me, Tegan.’
‘Er, thanks,’ the Australian said, a slight but rather attractive flush rising in her cheeks. ‘So… shall we?’
Nyssa smiled, feeling her cheeks dimple. She nodded, and followed Tegan towards the door.
About an hour later, the two women emerged from the practice. Nyssa’s phone was now full of pictures of the various rooms, as well as possible ideas for what she could do with each of the rooms. A lot of the furniture could still be used, although it would need some cleaning first. Tegan had politely listened as Nyssa had excitedly rambled about requirements for dental practices, the Australian nodding along in a state of cheerful bafflement. If she didn’t care much for the discussion, she hadn’t made it known.
‘Listen,’ Tegan said, as she locked up the door behind hind. ‘I know we kind-of hassled you into this, but the final decision really is yours. You’re the one who’ll be running the place, after all.’
Nyssa smiled, appreciative of the Australian’s kind words.
‘Thank you, Tegan. I… I think I’ll need to think about it about it some more, especially in terms of the financial side of it. Starting up my own practice is a bit decision.’
Tegan nodded.
‘I find surfing normally helps me think.’
Nyssa chuckled.
‘I wouldn’t know the first thing about surfing.’
‘Maybe a walk around the harbour, then?’
Nyssa nodded, smiling.
*
The sun was already beginning to sink towards the horizon. Tegan had pointed out a hotel in the high street that Nyssa could stay in overnight, before a flat or house could be found for Nyssa in the local area.
The two women reached the harbour. A few small fishing boats were nestled against the harbour walls, and the sounds of seagulls could be heard echoing above the town. Judging from what Tegan had mentioned, the birds were menaces, often attacking dogs and even small children.
‘It’s pretty quiet in the winter,’ Tegan said, leaning against the interior of the sea wall. Her brown eyes reflected the setting sun. ‘On my first day here, it was blowing a gale and chucking it down with rain. But… I dunno, I knew I’d found a place I wanted to live.’
Nyssa nodded, quite unable to take her eyes away from the Australian’s face. Despite only knowing Tegan for that afternoon, she felt as if she’d known her for years. Was that strange? Or was that just wishful thinking on Nyssa’s part?
‘Halfway around the world?’ Nyssa asked. ‘How did that happen?’
Tegan chuckled, giving Nyssa a quick wink that sent a happy shiver up her spine.
‘Nyssa, I can’t be mysterious if you know that, can I?’
Nyssa giggled.
‘Fair point. Alright, keep your mysteries for now, Ms Jovanka.’
Tegan’s mouth quirked slightly.
‘For now?’
Nyssa gave a wink in return, chuckling.
The two women laughed together for a moment. Nyssa now knew that her initial assessment of Tegan had been rather misplaced; the woman wasn’t rude, she was simply forthright and straightforward in her opinions. And she had a kindness behind her eyes that was intoxicatingly endearing.
‘Hey… please stay,’ Tegan said, softly, turning to stare at Nyssa. Behind her, the sun was beginning to set, casting a cosy pink halo around the Australian’s face. ‘Build something with us here.’
Nyssa stared at the Australian, feeling herself lost in those lovely brown eyes.
Oh...
‘I… I suppose I’ll need to have my things sent down from London over the next few days.’
Tegan stared at her for a second, before letting out a whoop. Dashing forward, the Australian pulled Nyssa into a hug. Nyssa felt her cheeks flesh at the sudden contact, and gave a squeak as Tegan hoisted off her feet and swung her around and around in an arc, laughing with delight the entire time.
‘T-Tegan!’ Nyssa stammered, very aware of how close they suddenly were. ‘P-people might stare!’
‘I don’t bloody care!’ Tegan exclaimed, eyes shining as she beamed up at Nyssa. ‘You’re wonderful, Nys!’
Nys?
Oh, dear, Nyssa thought, as she stared into those gorgeous brown eyes. This had all gotten rather complicated…
Enhance Your Smile with Composite Bonding: A Comprehensive Guide by Garden Dental and Implant Clinic in London
In the bustling metropolis of London, where style and sophistication converge, Garden Dental and Implant Clinic stands as a beacon of excellence in dental care. Renowned for their commitment to innovation and patient-centred care, they offer a wide range of services to help you achieve the smile of your dreams. Among these transformative treatments, composite bonding emerges as a popular choice for individuals seeking to enhance the appearance of their teeth with natural-looking results.
Understanding Composite Bonding:
Composite bonding, also known as dental bonding or cosmetic bonding, is a versatile and minimally invasive cosmetic dental procedure. It involves applying a tooth-coloured composite resin material to the surface of the teeth to improve their appearance. Whether you're dealing with chipped, cracked, discoloured, or misshapen teeth, composite bonding offers a simple yet effective solution to enhance your smile.
The Garden Dental and Implant Clinic Difference:
Located in the heart of London, Garden Dental and Implant Clinic is renowned for its dedication to excellence in dental care. Led by a team of experienced professionals, they combine state-of-the-art technology with personalized attention to deliver outstanding results tailored to each patient's unique needs and desires.
Personalized Consultation:
Your journey towards a more beautiful smile begins with a comprehensive consultation at Garden Dental and Implant Clinic. During this initial appointment, their skilled dental professionals will take the time to listen to your concerns, assess your oral health, and discuss your treatment options in detail. Whether you're interested in composite bonding or other cosmetic dentistry procedures, they will work with you to develop a customized treatment plan that aligns with your goals and budget.
Artistry and Precision:
At Garden Dental and Implant Clinic, they understand that achieving natural-looking results requires both artistry and precision. Their talented dental team possesses the skill and expertise to seamlessly blend the composite resin with your natural teeth, creating a flawless, harmonious smile that enhances your overall facial aesthetics.
Minimally Invasive Treatment:
One of the key advantages of composite bonding is its minimally invasive nature. Unlike other cosmetic procedures that may require extensive tooth preparation, bonding typically involves minimal removal of enamel, preserving the integrity of your natural teeth. This means less discomfort, faster recovery, and immediate results – allowing you to enjoy your stunning new smile without delay.
Long-lasting Results:
With proper care and maintenance, composite bonding can provide long-lasting results that withstand the test of time. By practicing good oral hygiene habits and avoiding habits like nail-biting and chewing on hard objects, you can help prolong the lifespan of your bonded teeth and enjoy your beautiful smile for years to come.
In the vibrant city of London, Garden Dental and Implant Clinic stands as a trusted destination for individuals seeking to enhance their smiles with composite bonding. With a commitment to excellence, artistry, and patient satisfaction, they are dedicated to helping you achieve the smile of your dreams. "Sup, G?"
The Grim Reaper grips his scythe ever-so-slightly tighter, but after a few millennia of bumping into each other like this, you've picked up on his little tells.
"I have told you before, that is not my name."
"I can go back to calling you Grimey."
The sound of his teeth grinding together is music to your ears.
Finally, after a moment of grip-tightening and dental damage, he heaves a great sigh (impressive, for a literal skeleton who lacks both lungs and a nose to blow it out of) and shifts his stance, rolling his weight back to the center so he is appears proper and in control.
(It's adorable, that he thinks he has any control over you.)
"I have come to offer you a deal," he intones in a deep, gravely voice that makes you think of tolling church bells and shovels sliding through dirt and worms overturning desecrated soil. In the beginning it had set your nerves alight, had triggered your fight-or-flight and led you to fawn, had left you with a hollow pit as you refused to eat for days (because being immortal didn't mean your body stopped running - it just made it run for longer, for eternity). Now, it was a comforting scrape against your mind - a reassurance that despite humanity changing, shifting from the pastoral, king-ruled fields of London to the bustling streets of Chicago, some things never changed.
"Is your name Jake?"
"It is - what?"
"Jake? Like, from State Farm. You said you want to offer me a deal - are you secretly Jake from State Farm?"
"I - who? What is a state farm?"
"That would make sense, you're name starts with a J, not a G. No wonder you were annoyed."
You can pinpoint the second he realizes you're fucking with him, and the bony fingers tighten hard enough around the staff of his reaping weapon that the wood splinters.
Wisely, he decides to ignore your witty banter and forge ahead. It only took him five-odd centuries to figure that trick out.
"I have come to offer you a chance to regain your mortality." His voice is less church-bells and more annoyed-Walmart-manager-on-Black-Friday now. "You have long walked this world, and the time has come to move on."
You frown, shifting a bit on the bed. "Wait, what? You said if I too the deal I'd never die-"
"Yes. Yes I did say that. But it has been a millennia, and surely you have seen everything there is to see? Your family is waiting for you on the other side-"
"Which one?"
"What?"
"Which family? I've been married seven times - who's waiting for me?"
The Grim Reaper fumbles for a moment, his jaw clacking as he opens and closes his mouth (a poor substitute for flapping lips, but you give him credit for trying). "All of them." He finally decides.
"Wow. Even my bitch ex? The one who kicked our dog?"
"Er..."
"I thought Heaven was supposed to be nice."
The reaper pinches his zygomatic arch (which you'd learned in a failed attempt to get a doctorate and practice medicine) and sighs again. You swear he mutters something along the lines of 'who said you're going to heaven?' but don't get a chance to call him out on it.
"Do you want to move on or not?" He snaps, all spooky, other-worldly pretense dropped.
"Nah, I'm good, J." You relax back into your chair, resting one hand behind your head, the other being occupied.
"This is a one-time offer, human. If you refuse you will never get another opportunity to recant and move on."
"Eh, I figure the heat-death of the universe will sort me out in the end. Can't exist if there's no atoms, right?"
"Look, you should really consider this - how much more can humanity do that you haven't seen?"
"We're getting closer to Mars every day - oh shit, there's an idea! I should be an astronaut! The whole immortality thing would be perfect for long space missions."
"You aren't listening-"
"Dude I gotta call NASA, they're gonna flip-"
"HUMAN!"
The shout is like shattered stained glass, a tree struck by lightning and falling, the keening last cry of a bird as it falls from the sky. You freeze, a little, tiny, itty-bitty bit of that ancient 'fight or flight' coming back to kick your unused self-preservation into gear. You stare at the skeleton.
"You cannot continue to live." He declares, voice back to its theatric deep timbre.
"Yes I can."
"No, you can't."
"Why not?"
The Reaper lets out an exasperated huff and motions to the needle in your arm. "You are sharing your immortality with the world!" He huffs, watching as the blood bag connected to the needle continues to slowly fill with your strange, silver-gold blood. "That was not the intent-"
"It wasn't forbidden in the contract." You have to wiggle, lifting your butt of the seat to grab your wallet, but after a moment you have it and are pulling out the wallet-sized laminated copy of the contract you had signed a thousand years ago. "There is nothing in here about not sharing my blood, or forbidding blood transfusions."
"That is because they did not exist-"
"There's also nothing about updating the contract." You had flunked out of medical school, but law school had been your jam. You'd been a damn good lawyer for a while too, until DC started giving you the ick and you retired. "This contract stands - you cannot amend it, not without the consent of both parties. And I don't consent." You shove your wallet into your front pocket with a shrug. "I don't make the rules."
The reaper hisses through his teeth, a sound like a sad black balloon at a 50th birthday party slowly giving a death cry. "You are upsetting the balance of the cosmos-"
"Not my problem."
"-and the scales of eternity-"
"Still not my problem."
"-and Anubis is on my ass about fixing it! So please, please, either allow yourself to pass on, or stop donating blood!"
You grin - it's all teeth, more than the Reaper himself usually shows, and squeeze the heart-shaped stress ball in your hand. More of your blood - silvery-gold, carrying the cursed gift given to you so long ago - slips down the line and into the bag, which is almost full. As soon as its gone, your body replaces it - a perk of the curse, the blessing, the whatever-it-is. You can stay hooked up all day and never run dry.
The infusions and transfusions don't make anybody truly immortal like yourself, but it's done wonders for cancer treatment and longevity. The work scientist have done in the past few decades, since you outed yourself to the government, has been incredible. People are living far past their predicted time, and the average life span is ticking upwards every year.
"I'm gonna have to go with no." You shrug, and the machine weighing the blood-bag beeps. The Reaper groans, running a hand down his skull. "Hey, you remember what you said when we struck this deal?"
"What?" He snaps, prickly as a hedgehog in a porcupine convention.
You grin. "You told me it would be waste to make me live forever - what could a road bandit with blood on their hands do to help humanity?" You shrug again. "It took me a while, but I figured it out." There are footsteps outside the room, and your smile widens. "Uh-oh, J. Better skedaddle if you don't want to be seen. I know how shy you are." A quick wink in his direction and the scythe haft shatters, sprinkling the room with splinters of bone. With a snarl and a dramatic swirl of black robes, the Grim Reaper vanishes, leaving you to your blood draw in peace.
Cackling, you lean back, hand back behind your head, refocusing on the news playing on the TV above. A story is running - the new average human lifespan is 350 and steadily climbing, and deaths from diseases are at an all time low. With a lowered birth rate, humanity has never had such low death rates, across the world as a whole.
Sure, maybe they're not living forever like you, but being a living blood bag for a few days every week is worth it, just for the stress and havoc it's causing J.
You were given immortality to atone for your horrific crimes against humanity. You wander the earth for millennium. Finally, you are given the option to revoke your immortality and end your suffering. You deny it.
