Ah! Highland Park is my jam! *High fives*. The instructions were precious, ngl. They were all about how to create, like, a meditative and tranquil environment for the cat (Donna, I believe)... and let me tell you, she eats better than I do. lol. I think you can tell so much about a person based on how they treat animals- and also, of course, how they raise their children. So David Lynch really surprised me... The day the Kerch courts return his shares of the Crow Club and the Fifth Harbor to Kaz is as fine a spring day as he can remember. He watches the large, white clouds scuttle across the brilliantly blue sky through the large windows in the courtroom, and all he can think is, A good wind. A carrying wind. The kind that, he hopes, brings his Wraith back to him. She deserves to share in this victory just as much as he does; after all, she was the one who chased Pekka Rollins all the way back to the Wandering Isle.

If not for him cleaning out his accounts at the Gemensbank and fleeing the country this would have been much harder. But Kerch law favors citizens in all things, and Rollins, as a foreigner, was only allowed property in the country so long as his person, and more importantly, his money, stayed in Kerch. After a year of absence, his properties are to be returned to any one who can prove title, and failing that they are to be auctioned off. Kaz very seriously considered buying the Emerald Palace just for the pleasure of tearing it down.

It is a strange sensation to be in a courtroom accepting a handshake and a quiet congratulations from his lawyer as they conclude their business. The only other times he has appeared at the courts is when he was on his way to jail, but he’s a respectable businessman now, not some juvenile thug in need of the rehabilitative powers of hard work and prayer.

He lets the delight of letting the system do his dirty work make a warm little nest in the hollow of his chest. The good feeling lasts exactly until he is stopped by a Stadwatch officer by the name of Visser on his way out of the building. Kaz is well acquainted with him. He has shockingly bad luck at Three Man Bramble and an apparent inability to walk away from a losing hand. Kaz has been more than happy to extend him a not insignificant line of credit at the Crow Club. And to let him pay it off with something other than kruge.

“Speak,” Kaz says shortly, once they are alone.

Visser hesitates for a moment, and Kaz can see the struggle within the man, between decency and duty, and self-preservation. He hands a file over, his lips pinched tightly together like if he doesn’t speak he’s not betraying his oath as a Stadwatch officer. Inej’s indenture documents are the first thing Kaz’s eyes light upon when he opens it. A year, maybe two, he told her. That is how long he estimated they had before the Merchant Council started hunting her. There’s no satisfaction in being right.

I think most of them meant well but after being freed from the Capitol, Peeta surely had no reason to think he was any safer in 13 than in the Capitol, did he? that moment in District 11 in CF, when Peeta got understandably angry at Katniss and Haymitch for yet again keeping secrets from him showed that he had anger in him but learned (early on?) how to keep it in check and this feeling of the two of them "ganging up" on him is still playing a big role here ... and with the hijacking kinda unlocking all that anger/fear/helplessness about what happened to Lavinia/Darius/Portia/HIMSELF/etc. ...Comment Actions

So glad I checked it out - this first chapter is nicely done. This period is such a critical time in Peeta's recovery and we get next to no information about it so I'm so glad to see you explore it so well.I just reread MJ and was surprised by how many things I'd forgotten or not paid much attention to the first several times I read it. One thing was Katniss calling for Gale after Peeta prevented her from committing suicide. I wondered what Peeta might have felt about that. As the reader, we know why she was calling for Gale but Peeta wouldn't have known that and probably viewed it as another example, in his mind, of Katniss' preference for Gale. So timely that I found this in your story only a few days after having read it in canon.Are you going to explore Peeta's realization that what he's thought he's known about Katniss' preference hasn't been accurate? How far might you take this back into D12? Another critical period into which we don't have much insight is their process of talking through their issues, fixing the miscommunication, apologizing for past hurts, etc. Obviously such a discussion had to take place before they could truly grow back together so just wondering if you had plans to include this as part of the Peeta's healing.I like how you alternate between D13 and the Capitol post-City Circle. I hated the way Peeta was treated by pretty much everyone in D13 and I identified with how marginalized and abandoned he must have felt. That cafeteria scene was especially heartbreaking to me, but I am glad that he was snarky and sarcastic and didn't let people get away with giving him shit (although I did want to slap him for his remark about stealing Annie from FinnicK). Outside of the choking- I can't imagine that under normal circumstances Peeta would ever put his hands on Katniss or try and harm her in any way - alot of what we saw of Peeta in D13 was his real personality. THG was a great series, don't get me wrong, but it could have been unparalleled had more POVs been included than solely Katniss', who, albeit fitting to her character, misses out on so many things. MJ in particular felt very rushed to me, like Suzanne Collins wanted to wrap it up and be done. Peeta's, Johanna's and Annie's time in the Capitol was merely acknowledged, but never expanded on. With Peeta especially it was a 'he's-hijacked-alright-we'll-deal-with-it-off-page' king of thing. Then again, the emphasis was on Katniss, teenager with heavy PTSD, who, for what it's worth, isolated herself more and more from other characters for the sake of her own sanity.All the better that there are authors out there who grant us a glimpse on the other side of the veil, and that in a formidable quality of writing nonetheless. I'm looking forward to following Peeta's (long) journey to recovery -- there are a lot of monsters under that bed that need to be confronted.Comment Actions

He is such a complex character, and we're only given a few scenes to understand his perspective, so what you have done here is so wonderful. There are a few things you've focussed on that I've also wondered about- mostly the Haymitch/Katniss dynamic in relation to Peeta, and the scene after the assassination when she calls out for Gale. i am interested to see how you develop this further, because what you have done here initially is so complex I am sure the rest will be excellent. In each chapter my heart breaks a bit more for him because of what he had to go through, but at the same time I'm amazed at his strength. Gorgeous!I love Dr. Aurelius's detached, clinical manner. Peeta's sessions with Dr Aurelius is hard to comprehend yet it is necessary for the reader to understand what he experienced through the hijacking and his recovery. I wish this was addressed more in the actual MJ2 movie.Peeta is always asking for Katniss. His memories are conflicting and he is trying desperately to figure them out. He asked for paper and pencil not to write down his dreams but to draw them. I sense this is the turning point where the old Peeta is slowly coming back.I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of this story. :)Comment Actions
