Chapter 1 Patchwork...

Eris traced the rim of her teacup, her eyes darting over her notebook filled with scrawled quotes. The cafe buzzed softly around her, a hum of clinking cups and murmured conversations. Two mismatched eyes - one a forest green the other a pale ice blue-shifted from the page to her surroundings. Her tow-toned hair split perfectly down the middle, a cascade of black and silvery-white. The threads connecting patches of skin were faint, like the lines of an old map. To most, her appearance was jarring-a mosaic of what were once separate people yet here, she was just Eris.

The faint shuffle of paws against the tile floor caught her attention. By the door sat George, his guide dog resting dutifully by his feet. The sweet elderly man wore his usual knit sweater, one headphone tucked behind his ear, likely so he could stay aware of the world around him while listening to another audiobook.

Eris smiled softly. George had been one of the first people in town to treat her like an ordinary person, though his blindness may have helped. She admired the way he carried himself, unbothered by the whispers of others, and his constant warmth towards her had been a rare comfort.

Her gaze drifted to the rest of the cafe. The elderly couple shares a slice of cake at the corner table, as part of their usual morning routine. A young woman typing furiously on her laptop, her coffee growing colder by the second, probably trying to finish a college assignment. Finally a honeymooning couple by the window all painted a comforting tapestry of normalcy. But normal wasn't a word Eris associated with herself.

"Eris, how does it feel to live among them?" The voice in her mind is that of Orin, the soul of freedom, his tone light yet probing. She ignored him, taking the last sip of her tea instead. Placing the teacup back on its saucer and standing to leave, she pulls her scarf tighter around her neck. Carrying her tray back to Jane at the, counter the cafe owner gave her a warm smile.

"Take this for later," Jane said, sliding a brown bag with a freshly baked blueberry muffin across the counter.

"Jane, you don't-"

"No arguments." Jane interrupted firmly.

Relenting quietly Eris nodded in thanks taking the bag into her hands, arguing with the stubborn owner would be pointless. Her mismatched eyes flickered towards George as she turned to leave. She paused for a moment, her voice soft but clear. "Goodbye George. I'll see you around."

George lifted his head slightly, a small smile spreading across his face. "Take care Eris." She stepped out into the crisp winter air, the sound of his audiobook, resuming faintly behind her.

As Eris walked, snowflakes clung to her scarf, the cold biting at her exposed skin. Her body, a patchwork of disparate mutations, often reacted differently to the elements. The parts of her skin taken from mutants with adaptive defences grew tougher in response to the chill, while others prickled painfully with cold sensitivity. She pulled her coat tighter around her, grateful for the balance between resilience and vulnerability her body provided, even if it reminded her of what she was.

She passed by a group of teenagers who stopped mid-conversation to stare. One whispered loudly, "She looks like Frankenstein's monster."

Eris's steps faltered, but she didn't stop. Her eyes fixed hard on the ground ahead of her. Refusing to acknowledge the sting in her chest. "They're just children, Eris. Their words have no weight." Haran, the soul of strength, rumbled his steady voice like an anchor, She nodded slightly, grateful for his presence.

The bookstore was Eris's next stop, a haven of quiet where she could lose herself among shelves of stories. As she browsed her mind wandered to her mutations. Her enhanced strength allowed her to easily pull a heavy volume from a high shelf, while her adaptive reflexes caught it before it could fall. But each power came with its cost.

The chaotic flashes of memories, remnants from brains used to construct her own, were the most troubling. They came at random fragments of lives she didn't know, faces she didn't recognize. Sometimes they left her dizzy, disconnected from reality for moments at a time.

She placed the book back, steadying herself against the shelf as a familiar warmth settled in her chest. Althea, the soul of compassion, spoke gently. "Breathe my dear. You are whole, even in your pieces”

Later that evening, Eris stood before her bathroom mirror. The dim light illuminated her patchwork reflection, her two-toned hair framing the network of stitches that crisscrossed her face and body. She traced a line across her collarbone, Her fingers trembling as memories surfaced.

Darkness. A sterile, chemical stench. Pain seared through her body as she opened her eyes for the first time. She had screamed, her voice hoarse and raw. The room around her was cold, filled with metallic tools and dim, flickering lights. Figures in lab coats stared down at her with clinical detachment.

"What am I?" she had cried out, but no one answered.

Her limbs had felt foreign. Heavy with strength she didn't understand. When she tried to move, her arms snapped the metal restraints holding her down, and the sound of shattering metal echoed in the sterile room. Panic consumed her. She didn't know what the world was. Let alone who or what she was.

A sharp knock on the glass had startled her. A voice calm and clinical had spoken through an intercom. "You are my greatest creation."

Eris blinked, pulling herself back to the present. Her breathing was uneven, her heart pounding.

"You're not that person anymore." Haran rumbled gently, his fatherly tone grounding her.

With a determined shake of her head, Eris stepped into the shower letting the hot water cascade over her. The steam fogged the mirror, erasing her reflection.

Dressed in comfortable clothes, Eris settled into her bed with her notebook. The collection of souls had grown quiet, retreating to give her space. Her pen hovered over the page as thoughts swirled. She glanced at the window, where snowflakes clung to the glass. Somewhere out there, life continued as it always did-messy, imperfect and achingly beautiful.

Eris placed the pen down, staring at the ceiling.

"Who am I, really?" she whispered into the darkness.

No answer came, but the faint, comforting presence of the souls lingered in the background, like a family watching over her from afar. For now, it was enough.

ok so one thing i'd like to see in a fic (and plan on putting in mine) is like...

so you know how tom hiddleston has played loki for like a decade. obviously he has aged, he's gotten some wrinkles, hairline receded just a little bit, etc etc, which isn't a bad thing, aging is normal. Especially in that span of time.

But loki himself is a being that would live thousands of years. Even though he does age, the amount of physical aging that tom hiddleston underwent in like a decade would probably happen over the course of several centuries for loki. But even so, you see loki age physically throughout the films, because tom does (and obviously editing tom and chris to look the same age over that many years would probably be offensive and also be a lot of extra work)

So one thing i'd love to see in a fic is like... recognizing that loki is physically aging way faster than he should. Is it all the stress he's been under from thor's coronation + torture + being on the run from thanos? Is it the effects of malnutrition? Did Thanos/The Black Order take advantage of how time is funky in space, and so even though Loki was missing for only a year, perhaps he was tortured/kept aboard The Sanctuary for several years?

And what would Loki think of this? For the context of my fic, Loki basically got resurrected a bit after Infinity War, so he would really be around to see how much his physical appearance has aged. And loki is obviously someone who cares about how he looks, i imagine he would be very self-conscious (maybe even like paranoid) of how he now looks and be sort of desperate to 'fix' it. And it would really add to the whole multi-faceted crisis he's going through.

Chapter 1

"Stark we need you" I hear a strange voice walking out to the living room as I get closer I hear my dad reply

"Not happening eye patch" I sense it's a serious conversation so I hide behind the wall near the living room to listen in more I know I shouldn't but I can't help it

"Loki needs to be stopped everyone else is already on the ship helping out why can't you" the strange man says who loki I think

"To busy" my dad says cockily I roll my eyes

"To busy to save the world" the man says I scrunch my face in confusion

"What" I say to myself but apparently not quiet enough

"Vi?" My dad says I come out from behind the wall

"Uh yeah....hi" I say awkwardly my dad and the man with an eye patch look over at me

"Kid what are you doing I told you not to listen to my conversations" my dad says sighing with his hands on his temples rubbing them

"Sorry..." I say apologetically looking at the floor my dad goes to speak but the man interrupts him

"So you must be violet I've heard a lot about your fighting skills" the man comes over to me looking me up and down putting his hand out for me to shake

"Nick furry" he says

"Um hey" I say shaking his hand he smirks

"Maybe we should involve you in this conversation sense your so interested" he says cockily

"Absolutely not nick I'm serious" my dad walks up to nick angrily

"Calm down stark I've just heard she's a pretty good fighter and with a suit-" he gets interrupted by my dad

"Ok heard enough get the hell out" my dad says looking him in the eyes

"Dad calm down" I say going between him and nick he looks down at me

"Your not getting involved in this vi" he says seriously

"Getting involved in what?" I say confused

"A god loki is trying to tak-" nick speaks up

"What part of of no don't you understand" my dad says looking at nick like he's an idiot

"She's an adult she can make her own choices" nick says getting angry now to my dad goes to speak but I get there first

"Your right I can so what's going on with a god I mean gods don't even exist" I say looking at nick

"May I talk to you for a Second, great" my dad says pulling me away from nick I huff annoyed

"Your not getting involved in this im serious" he says letting go of me looking me dead in the eyes

"Dad come on im not a little kid anymore I can handle it atleast give me a chance" he goes to speak

"Please" I say pouting knowing begging always works normally my dad huffs out annoyed I used this method on him he thinks for a minute

"Fine but I monitor everything be there with you the whole time and you don't get physically involved, deal" he says putting his hand out

"Deal!" I smile ignoring his hand hugging him instead he laughs

"Alright alright, nick fill her in"

So in the past hour I've learned gods are real, ones helping the "avengers" they call themselves and my dad's apparently apart of that, and one's trying to take over the world, the brother of the one helping us Thor and loki well that's all not mind blowing at all I run my hands through my hair sighing

"Ok how can I help" I say finally

"Well-" before nick even speaks one full sentence my dad speaks up

"You can't help you won't help you shadow me and when I fight you stay on the ship ok" he says with finality

"Sure" I sigh annoyed he doesn't trust me to help

"Well that's settled go get changed and we'll go" my dad says to me as he goes to change to I go with him

As i get to my room the reality of what I'm doing settles in I start to get nervous, after I'm done changing I look in the mirror taking a deep breath adjusting my flannel

"You got this" I say to myself trying to build my confidence

"Vi come on let's go" my dad shouts from the hall

"Coming" I shout back I take one more deep breath heading for the door I stop looking back at my side table by my bed I go over and open the drawer looking in

"Well this will finally come in handy" I say picking up a special purple knife my dad gave me after my last training session as a gift for completing my training I know I'm not Suppose to be fighting but who knows i tuck it in the back pocket of my jeans feeling more confident and go out to meet my dad

Celebrating Ten Years of Agent Carter

In January 2015, Peggy Carter did something no other female Marvel characters have done at the time: headlining her own show. She strutted onto our screens, knocked out some bad guys with a stapler, and told us to call her “agent”.

In the years since, Peggy, her friends, and the fandom have gone through a lot. We’ve seen the show get cancelled, and Peggy returning, Jarvis returning, Daniel Sousa returning. We tried to #SaveAgentCarter, we held fic exchanges, we cosplayed and Disneybounded, and we created zines. Despite the show’s premature end, these characters stayed in our hearts, and we made sure no one could forget them.

Agent Carter will turn 10 in January 2025. To mark this milestone, I am super excited to collaborate with @peggynet to launch We Know Her Value: Celebrating Ten Years of Agent Carter. Starting from 6th January 2025, the anniversary of the show’s premiere, we will be hosting ten themed days to celebrate ten years of our favourite show. You can join by picking a theme, making a post on that theme, and post it on the theme day. Tag me (@ssrarchives) or @peggynet, and add the tag #AgentCarterTurns10. Your works can be as simple or as elaborate as you like!

Day 1: Favourite Character

The show has presented us with a whole host of amazing characters, from Peggy to lab rats and background agents. So…who is your favourite?

Day 2: Favourite Episode

Agent Carter packed a lot into 18 episodes: fights, spy shenanigans, musical numbers, engagements, kisses. Which episode is your favourite? 

Day 3: Favourite Ship

We cannot talk about Agent Carter without talking about the ships, especially not when the cast happily fanned our fandom flames. Whether you are headcanoning any two or three to be passionately involved, or you have the one true friendship that does it for you, what is your favourite relationship on the show? 

Day 4: Favourite Scene/Arc

From Peggy threatening a fellow diner with a fork, to Daniel flopping his five-episode relationship, Agent Carter packed many interesting scenes and arcs into the overall spy shenanigans. Do any of these scenes or arcs stand out to you? 

Day 5: Favourite Cast/Crew Moment

Time to look behind the scenes! Once the episodes were over, the cast and crew kept the party going, from the Stark Jar to on-set pranks to the legendary Dubsmash War. Do you have a favourite cast/crew moment? 

Day 6: Into the Multiverse

Even though the show was cancelled in 2016, that was not the last we saw of Peggy and her team. Peggy herself returned over and over again, eventually becoming one of the few mortals privy to the knowledge of Loki and the Sacred Timeline tree. Jarvis returned in Avengers: Endgame, becoming the first Marvel character to debut on TV and move on to a movie appearance. Even Daniel made a return in Agents of SHIELD Season 7. Which of these cameos were your favourite? Who do you want to see in future MCU projects?

Day 7: Containment Breach

There is a life for everyone outside of murder gases and space goop. Since the end of Agent Carter, the cast and crew continue to entertain us with excellent projects. From Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning to Resident Alien to The Merry Gentlemen, we have definitely not seen the last of our favourite agents. Have you watched any of these? Do you have a favourite? Day 8: Favourite Fanfic

What is Agent Carter without its fandom? From SSR Confidential to Agent Carter Zine, from fandom-defining multi-chapter behemoths to short and sweet ficlets, the fic writers have not been resting at all. This is your chance to shout out your favourite fics!

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected?  I was wrong in my 2024 roundup post—I wrote 25k more words this year despite having 10 fewer fics. Which I did NOT expect. I figured I was trucking along to make my usual ~270k, but I forgot about The Secret Fics lol.

What’s your own favorite story of the year?  I think I have to go with Body and Soul(mate), which I'm just so so proud of. I love how it came out and I think it's really original.

Did you complete your writing goals from last year?  The Goal: My goal is to have a similar mix of fics as least year, and also to write my first collaboration with @cricketnationrise, which will be a long multichap. First part, pretty close. I wrote more multichaps (21% vs 15%) this year, which meant fewer fics in total. Second part, oops. Cricket and I have both been busy, but the hockey fic lives!! We'll get to it eventually!

Do you have any writing goals for the New Year? I can't believe I'm gonna say this but... write more original fiction. See below for more on that. Fanfic wise... finally finish some of the planned stories I've had kicking around for a while.

Did you take any writing risks this year? I submitted a pitch for an anthology, was accepted, and wrote my first original story! I had a lot of fun with it and I think I'll purse more next year. Idk if I'm ready for a whole novel and trying to get (more) published, but we'll see.

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Even though it's numbers have come up since publishing, I'm still gonna go with The Impossible Soul, aka my Westworld-esque android/human AU.

Most fun story to write: Probably Body and Soul(mate). Figuring out all the body swaps and soulmate lore was a lot of fun and the whole thing just flowed so well.

Biggest disappointment: Why do I keep this question? I hate complaining publicly. 😂 My biggest disappointment is that I sometimes let fandom drama/trends/popularity make me feel bad. Being mad because a fandom loves X type of fic doesn't help anyone.

Biggest surprise: I'm not sure I really had any big surprises this year. Biggest surprise in my stats was that my percent of explicit works is way up—T used to be my most-used rating. Part of that is publishing fewer one-shots, since those tend to be T for me, whereas a long fic is more likely to be E.

Coming soon/planned for 2024: It's a little depressing how so many of these are the same as last year. Hence the resolution above, I guess.

Interview With a Writer

Story: Leverage

Paring: Michael Gavey x Female!Reader

So, when did you start writing?

I guess I have to say as a teenager, though I never shared anything I wrote back then. I still have the notebooks I used to drabble in (in Dutch), it wasn’t very good at all but I guess even back then I had that need to be creative and make my own stories.

I officially started writing fanfic in 2013. I watched Thor the Dark World, fell in love with Loki, made a Tumblr and a whole new world opened. After a few months of reading fanfic, I started writing my own. Again, it wasn’t very good at all but even my bad stories slowly started to find an audience on here, so I stuck with it.

Loki is amazing, just Aemond energy in a different font.

He truly is! I've written different characters since, but the moment I saw Aemond on screen I was transported back to the first time I saw Loki. His intensity, that quiet threat like you don't know what he's going to do next, combined with this, "I was made to be king but my stupid brother is the chosen one."

And a certain sadness, of course. We know they're the villains, but we understand them in a way and can feel their pain. And they are sexy as hell of course ;)

Where did the plot for Leverage come from?

Okay, so first of all, I am someone who never plans an entire plot when I start a fic. I am very much a "make it up as I go along" writer. I start with an idea and a dynamic I want to write between two characters and then I build from there.

For this one I wanted Reader and Michael to have a common goal and a common enemy, something that would push these two different characters to want to work together. I wanted the enemies to lovers vibe but soft. Like, you can tell very early on in the fic that they have empathy for each other. When Reader is crying, Michael softens up easily, and when she sees Michael being vulnerable about not being able to get girls, she feels for him as well.

Their personalities will still clash even after that, but you can (hopefully) feel the connection between them as well. I wanted Ben's threat to loom over them for the entire fic but also never make it the main plot point in every chapter. The main plot for me here was how Michael and Reader could help each other change and grow, and then either accept that change or turn away from it.

Was there anything in specific that inspired your Reader portrayal?

No, not really, I think. I wanted to make her independent and confident, but also a little bit lonely, all traits you can also find in Michael. And anything else, as usual, I make up as I go along. I get to know the characters as I write them and often I'm surprised where they take me. In this fic I think it was Michael who surprised me the most though, he really turned out different than I initially had planned.

Explain your interpretation of Michael. What drives him? How did he differ from what you originally had in mind?

Salburn didn't give us much to work with, and I actually love that because it gives us so much freedom to play with the character.

I went with what the movie did give us: Michael's obvious hatred for the popular privileged kids. It's the reason he initially hates Reader, but warms up to her when he learns that she is actually working for her place at Oxford and she is not a real part of Ben's group. I think he is driven to help her purely because of that common enemy in the beginning.

Then he gets to know her a little and the promise of sex comes into play, which he definitely doesn't say no to. What surprised me in writing him is that I initially planned on writing him as a sub throughout the entire fic, but then half way in the tables started turning and he started taking over control a bit (of the Reader and me as well apparently!). And then suddenly it made complete sense to write him that way, because he would be that overeager student who wants to do well and who does the homework to get it exactly right, it doesn't matter whether it's math or sex, he wants to show how good and smart he is.

Him just accepting his feelings for her so calmly was also something I didn't plan, but just sort of happened as I was writing.

My initial plans there was going to be a big fight between her and Michael right before they would call things off. He would force her to admit her feelings and the sex would turn quite rough; Michael just being Michael and saying a lot of wrong things to her that would eventually shut her down completely. But I never wrote that scene and by the time I got there in the story it didn't seem to fit their characters anymore and it also seemed too heavy for this fic so I let go of that idea.

Do you feel your Reader and Michael complement one another?

I definitely think they complement each other, but I also think they are quite alike in many ways. As I said before, they are both quite confident in different ways and insecure in others.

I do think they complement each other perfectly with Michael being more book smart and focused, while Reader is (a lot) better with people and social skills. I think them being together changes them both for the better cause they can learn from each other's personalities and bring out the best out in each other (but also the worst, of course).

Let's say that in their future they definitely learn to focus on bringing out the best and not the worst in each other ;)

Do you think you'll ever continue their story?

Never say never, but there's no plans to write more for them for now. I don't think I've written many sequels over the years, but I love writing different ideas and dynamics between two characters and once they are together, it's like "my work here is done."

Do you have a personal favorite story (on ao3 or Tumblr) you'd like to share?

My absolute favorite story is from a previous fandom that I'm not in anymore, but I have to share that one as it is the single most beautiful thing I've ever read. It was the fic that pulled me into the fandom. It's a Stucky story and it's called Not Easily Conquered, known as NEC in the fandom.

It will crush your soul and heal you and I will give anyone the same advice I got before I read it for the first time: be prepared because this one will hurt. I cried for like a week after I read it and I don't cry easily so this one should come with a warning. But it is absolutely worth it!

Do you have another story in the works?

The only thing I'm working on right now is a Felix Catton x Reader story called Pretty Little Liars. Two chapters have been posted and I'm working on the next ones, but it may be a while as life has been a bit full on here lately.

Would you like to share a snippet of what's to come?

“I think he has a little crush on you,” you stated while Felix opened the door to his room and let you step inside first. Felix shook his head but the little blush on his cheeks didn’t go unnoticed by you. “It’s not like that,” he denied, “He’s just…a bit lost and I’m trying to be his friend.” “You sure that’s all he wants?” “Yeah,” he laughed, “Ollie doesn’t want me, he just wants to be like me.” “If you say so,” you sighed, not convinced. Felix grabbed you by the shoulders and pushed you down to sit on the side of his bed, leaning forward to look into your eyes, “Hey, come on, don’t ruin this by becoming jealous.” “I’m not jealous, I’m…concerned.” That wasn’t a lie. Jealousy was never a factor, you knew right from the start that Felix would never truly be yours, you would always have to share him with the rest of the world. And you always accepted that. But the idea of sharing him with Oliver somehow made your blood boil. Felix kneeled down in front of you, eyes locking with yours as his gaze darkened and he smiled that irresistible smile of his. “Now, did you come up here to chat about Ollie, or to get your pussy eaten, hmm? Cause I can’t do both at the same time.” His lips connected with your knee, kissing your skin softly and you bit your lip and sighed deeply, “Fine, I’ll shut up.”

This is the phrase that greets Dr Dana Scully the second she walks through the door of the glorified storage closet in the basement of the Hoover Building that is the X-Files division of the FBI, on what would otherwise be an unassuming mid-June Monday morning.

“Run that by me again?”

“Animal transformations, Scully.” Says Mulder from beside the projector, and Scully knows from the excited look on his face and the dimmed lights in the room that she is in for one of his world-famous slideshow presentations. “Stories of humans turning into animals exist throughout history and transcend cultural borders. Dozens of stories in Greek myth of gods turning humans into animals, the Norse god Loki becoming wolves, horses, birds, the selkies of Celtic mythology which shed their seal-skins and become human. There’s also the Japanese Kitsune, powerful shapeshifting spirits which take the form of foxes! Not to mention the classic vampires turning into bats and men that become wolves in the light of the full moon.”

“Of course. Werewolves. How could I forget.”

“Precisely, Scully. Werewolves.” Mulder has a self-satisfied grin on his face, and he continues: “The phenomenon also appears in literature. I take it you’re familiar with the works of Shakespeare?”

“In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, when Bottom is turned into a donkey?”

“Right. And in Kafka’s Metamorphosis,” Mulder continues, flipping to a slide of an illustration depicting a giant insect lying on its back in a tiny bedroom, “when Gregor Samsa becomes a beetle because of the overwhelming stress from the demands of his employer and his family. Humanity is obsessed with shapeshifting, has been for millenia.”

“While it is endlessly enlightening to learn about the common threads that unite our species’ storytellers throughout time, Mulder,” Scully says in a flat voice with an exaggerated sigh, “what exactly is the point of all this?”

“The point, Scully,” He replies immediately, drawing out his pause for several moments for dramatic effect, “Is that tales of human-to-animal transformations exist all across the world, and have existed for just about as long as humans have. And these stories have to have started somewhere.”

Oh boy, here we go, Scully thinks. Couldn’t he have waited until I’d had some coffee? It’s barely 8 o’clock in the morning.

“Oh, Mulder, please, don’t tell me you’re suggesting-”

“Lightalley, Colorado is a small mountain town about two hours west of Denver by car. It’s known for picturesque views of the landscape, popular hiking trails, and, most recently,” he says, and flips one slide further to a missing persons poster, then another, and then three more, “several disappearances under mysterious circumstances.

“Freya Pennington, 33, was last seen eight days ago, on the 14th, in the backyard of her own home. Her fiancé, George, says she was there one moment and gone the next, and he reports hearing no sound to indicate that she was in distress even though he was in the kitchen facing the yard when she disappeared. Harley Williams, 27, is a recently qualified medical doctor. He lives alone, and his disappearance was only reported to the Lightalley Police Department when he didn’t show up to work at the local hospital on Tuesday. Edward Irwin, 49, and his daughter Ellie, 17, are tourists from New York who were last seen on Thursday leaving their hotel and heading in the direction of a hiking trail. Sydney McIntosh, 21, works at a bar and was last seen by her boss, Daniel Meyers, leaving her work at 1 o’clock on Friday morning at the end of her shift. Crime scene technicians have examined the locations of their last known sightings thoroughly and turned up nothing. No blood, no weapons, no DNA samples, not even the victims’ possessions. None of the victims have connections to one another, and none of the disappearances happened within two miles of each other.

“Five people gone and not a single witness testimony, nor a shred of evidence, that suggests where they might be, who or what might have taken them, or if they were even taken at all. Any theories, Scully?”

“Well, it could be that they left of their own volition, however this many people disappearing in this short a timespan makes that rather unlikely. Perhaps there is a serial kidnapper at work here, but given that the first victim’s partner was at the scene and didn’t see or hear anything, that could be discounted as well, or in the case of a kidnapper the first disappearance may be unrelated to the rest. I really couldn’t tell one way or the other without speaking to the local PD. But I’m guessing you had your own theory ready before I even walked in the door, didn’t you?”

“You know me, Scully, always prepared.” He replies, smiling. “While it is true that Lightalley PD’s forensics team didn’t find anything that suggested a struggle, indicating that kidnappings were unlikely, that doesn’t mean they didn’t find anything. At each location, there have been footprints leading away.”

“Footprints belonging to who?”

“Not who, Scully, what. Animal tracks, in every case leading away from the crime scene, but not towards it. As if they simply came into being right then and there.”

“Animal tracks.”

“Absolutely, Scully. Victim #1, a rabbit. Victim #2, an elk. Victims #3 and #4, coyotes, two sets of tracks alongside each other. And victim #5, some sort of large bird, perhaps a raven, which end a few yards away from the bar, implying takeoff.”

“Mulder, please don’t tell me you believe these people were somehow transformed into animals.” She says, halfheartedly glaring at him. When he responds with a shrug of his shoulders and a mischievous grin, she just lets out a resigned sigh. “Alright, what time do we leave?”

“I thought you’d never ask,” is Mulder’s reply as he hands her a plane ticket. “We leave at seven tonight. See you there, Scully.”

Scully’s just glad the packing means she gets the rest of the day off.
