During summers in her last two years of high school, she performed for tourists in Branson, Missouri, living with her Aunt Gracie.

She met Cathleen Spengler when they were in an off-off Broadway production of Kiss Me, Kate; Cathleen was playing Katharine/Lilli Vanessi and Willow was playing Bianca/Lois Lane. The two struck up a friendship, and shortly after Cathleen gave birth to her second daughter Marie, she introduced Willow to her friend Ray Stantz. After a whirlwind courtship, the two tied the knot on Halloween 1990.

She was nominated for Best Featured Actress in a Musical at the Tony Awards in 1991 for her role as Sister Ruth in a musical adaptation of Black Narcissus, but lost to Daisy Eagan.

She would later win Best Leading Actress in 2001 for her role as Polly Kern in Red as the Curtain, a Drowsy Chaperone-style vaudeville satire mixed with the blood and guts of Chicago.

Both of her pregnancies were rough-- her pregnancy with Addison was especially uncomfortable and the labor/delivery was fraught with complications, while during her pregnancy with Natalie, she was still dealing with the emotional fallout of the Spenglers' perceived betrayal.

Favorite Thing About Them: Let's face it, besides Lois Maxwell's portrayal of Miss Moneypenny in the James Bond film series, there weren't really other examples of desk secretaries so well developed as Janine Melnitz. It is a hard job, and vital to keep government institutions and companies organized, but like the also hard work of being a howsewife, it is often overlooked because is a job associated with women that writers tend to think it won't be interesting to audiences as " the stories of man of action going into a battlefield or other dangerous kind of adventure" that they often choose to focus on. So to have this simple working class lady being portrayed with charisma, as we empathize with the boredom, excitement, confidence, anger, stress and fear that she shows as she navigates trough her job, acting as the human element that helps to keep us grounded in this fantastic story about scientists hunting ghosts in New York City, is marvelous to watch. And she is also shown to be able to adapt and become a competent Ghostbuster in her own right, even leading a back up team while being someone who, like Winston Zeddemore, didn't got access to an Ivy League University Doctorate, showing that there are other forms of being inteligent besides having a golden framed diploma, like conecting with the general public and providing emotional support for friends who need it.

Least Favorite Thing About Them: The fact that when Ghostbusters 2 went to take inspiration from the cartoon The Real Ghostbusters, it made the mistake of only getting inspiration from the character design in the messy later seasons, ignoring the idea of her acting as the fifth Ghostbuster presented by the first two seasons and instead making her have a sexual escapade with Louis Tully out of nowhere to boost his confidence so Louis could be the new fifth Ghostbuster. The writers of the second movie, wich was the same team as the first one, had the template to make progress in making a urban fantasy adventure comedy story where man and woman worked together as a team to save the day without seeing anything weird about it, and didn't tooked any advantage of it.

Random Headcanon: Her maternal family is of german-irish, lutheran and catholic background, while her paternal family is of ucranian, polish and georgian jewish background. She always took part in traditions of both sides of her family, but has more strong identification with the jewish side.

Unpopular Opinion: I understand the idea of the Real Ghostbusters cartoon series episode Janine, You Changed being an attempt to criticize the executives that wanted to force Janine into what they deemed conventional patterns of femininity by inserting the plot of an evil fae that prays on insecurities manipulating Janine after she feels insecure about her appearance, but I think that is still out of character because when it camed to her physical appearance, Janine never seemed likely to feel insecure about it, but take pride in it. If a writer really wanted to explore some insecurity in her in a way that felt organic, it would make more sense to explore her insecurity due to the fact that she camed from a working class background and didn't have access to a college and university doctorate like Peter, Ray and Egon because of lack of money or family connections and because the universities criteria to accept new students is arbitrary and elitist, but Winston, who also shares a working class background, and the other Ghostbusters would assure her that just because she isn't a former Ivy League graduate, doesn't mean she is less inteligent or capable to understand the work of tracking and studying the supernatural.

What a Woman

Summary: Janine and Egon have been married since 1985, this is their story...from dealing with Walter Peck, the Staypuft Marshmallow man and Gozer to pink mood slime and the march of Lady Liberty in the first years of their marriage. To the clues that there might be a second Gozer resurgance.

The Morning after Gozer's Vanquishment 1984

Janine waited a little ways away from the bulk of the crowd. She hoped her premonition wouldn't come true and that her boys would come back to her safely. She fingered the ring under her glove and prayed that they would walk out at any moment. She heard the crowd go wild and looked up relieved tears falling from her eyes. They're alive! And relatively unscathed, at least she thought so from what little she could see of them through the horde of people. She saw Ray walkout followed by Peter who was helping Dana Barrett then Winston and finally Egon. They were are covered in fluff but she wasn't thinking of that, or cared, as she made a dash for him.

"Egon!" She called out over the cheering crowd.

He smiled widely and hugged her close.

"Thank God," she breathed into the collar of his suit.

Egon crowded them into the back of Ecto-1 where she, like Dana, ended up on the lap of her respective ghostbuster after Louis Tully practically jumped in behind them.

Janine felt Egon's tight grip on her as they made it to what remained of their headquarters.

"Let's be real here," Peter said, "There's nothing."

"There won't be anything for a while," Winston said honestly.

"We'll need to store Ecto-1 somewhere before anything can really be done," Ray said looking forlornly at the rubble they called home.

"I can help with that," said Janine, "My roommate just moved in with her fiance, garage is free for storage if you need it."

The boys sighed in relief and nodded at this.

"Also, it might be a bit cramped but I can make some room too," Janine added finally feeling like herself after the rollercoaster that was the last couple of days.

Ray, Egon, Peter, Dana and Louis breath a sigh at that, they had a place to go.

The group piled back into Ecto-1 slimer hanging on to the lights as they drove to Brooklyn.

"Head warning, there is only one bathroom, so for the sake of us girls. And I cannot stress this enough, boys please flush and at least put the seat down after using. I'm your secretary not your mother," Janine said already sounding tired.

"Well you're gonna be babying one of us at least," Peter said with a smirk.

Janine glared at him before snuggling into Egon's neck. In her mind, now all that took presence was if her boys had any bruises they need looked at, she is no nurse but she can defend herself pretty well.

Once they arrived, Janine breathed a sigh of relief, she's home.

"Home sweet home," Peter said helping Dana out.

Janine opened the door making way for her boys, Louis and Dana.

"Dana I've some pajamas you can wear till I've the time to go and pick more things up. Ray, I think my brother left some things here you can borrow, should fit you ok. Peter, Ray, Mr. Tully you'll have to leave me your measurements so I can pick things up later," Janine started off, "Bathroom's through there, the couch pulls out and the spare bed has clean sheets, we'll just have to figure out what the sleeping arrangements will be."

Egon not so subtly pulled Janine to him making it clear where he'd be.

Ray and Peter gave each other a look.

"Take turns?" Ray asked nodding to the guest bedroom.

Peter nodded and no sooner he agreed, Ray ran off calling dibs on the bed for the first couple of nights. Peter rolled his eyes at his friend’s antics but said nothing as he stayed, respectfully, close to Dana.

"The packs can go in the corner," Janine pointed to an empty corner of the living room, "For the love of God don't try charging them here please."

Egon nodded respectfully and left her side to shed his proton pack before making his way back to her.

Peter and Winston did the same the latter going to the bathroom to shed their respective overalls.

"Don't worry about Louis," Winston said, "I've a pull out for him to crash on."

Janine sighed in relief at the knowledge she'd not have to shoulder everything. Granted this did not mean that her home wouldn't be cramped for the next while with all of them going in and out.

A game plan set, Janine made her way to her bedroom Egon in toe.

Egon shed his on overalls on the way tossing them in the laundry hamper as he followed her. He found her shedding her own coat and outerwear, her back to the door. He saw her tense shoulders drop as she removed her coat and realized how tense he himself had been before now. He walked up to her and put his hands on her shoulders before pulling her back to his front in a tight intimate hug.

Janine felt his arms around her and she felt the last of her walls drop. In the blink of an eye, she turned in his arms, buried her face in his shirt-covered chest, and sobbed holding onto him for dear life.

Egon pressed his lips to the crown of her head and closed his eyes. All those times he'd snubbed her advances crossed his mind. All the resistance and denial and for what? Granted he'd proposed not too long ago, but the lost time on what he thought he needed had him stumped. Why had he resisted living so much before realizing there was no shame in having something outside of academia? He realized just how pivotal having her in his life had become even before they'd made it official. He vowed to himself he'd never let anyone hurt her...even himself.

"I'm right here," he softly said into her pixy hair, "And I'm not going anywhere."

Janine nodded her sobs slowly subsiding.

The pair stayed like that for a bit longer, Egon making sure his little love is alright and Janine taking a moment to make herself presentable. If only to make a quick dinner for them all before crashing.

Janine felt a warm hand on her cheek and she looked up to Egon's soft brown eyes and tender smile.

"We're alive," she said as laughter bubbled up.

Egon pulled her into a tender kiss filled with promise...and more.

"Knock it off! Brooklyn, we're hungry what do you have that's edible in this place?" Peter called out from the kitchen.

Janine rolled her eyes and Egon chuckled.

"Better go out there before he destroys the fridge," Egon said half serious.

Janine ran out at that knowing very well how bachelors work, especially these ones.

"Rule number one, hands-off until things have been check-over," Janine said pushing Peter away from the refrigerator.

"What's rule number two then?" Peter asked cockily.

"Follow my rules till a routine is set or sleep outside with the strays," Janine said pointing to her back door.

Peter took a seat on the sofa for once listening and sitting quietly.

Meanwhile, Janine looked through her fridge to see what it was she had on hand to feed the people in her home.

“I have a leftover roast, green salad and matzo ball soup from Passover,” she said as she took out the food and called out, “Ray! Come and get food before it’s gone!”

Egon floated in behind her eying the soup like a starving man. If there was anything food-related he’d call his guilty pleasure it would be matzo ball soup. Janine had sung her praises of her grandmother’s recipe and was curious to see how it stood to the praise. Though not attached to his Jewish roots, his grandmother made sure to at least instill in him and his brother the respect held for the varying traditions of each religion…and because her matzo ball soup is unbeatable.

“I don’t think anyone’s gonna get the soup,” Winston said with a chuckle.

“If he knows what’s good for him, he’ll leave enough for at least Dana and Mr. Tully,” Janine said firmly, “It could be the one thing she can eat and actually keep down after such an ordeal.”

Egon pouted, though he’d never admit it, but gave in and let Janine dish out the food and put the soup on the stove to reheat. He looked on in awe at how fluffy the matzo looked, how rich the broth looked and it did not lean on the light side where meat content was concerned.

Janine spared “subtle” glances at him and grinned. Her bubbe always said a way to a man’s heart was with food.

Once the soup was done heating, she gave a good portion each to Dana and Louis before serving the others. Egon sat at the kitchen island and stared at his plate of steaming soup and dug in without much prompting.

Janine looked on in satisfaction as Egon’s face morphed into bliss at the first mouthful of soup. She settled for some broth, not being too hungry herself, and settled for feeling proud that she’d rendered her boys, and guests, speechless.

“You learned with your grandmother right?” Winston asked between mouthfuls of soup.

“Bubbe wanted to make sure at least one of her granddaughters learned to cook before she kicked the bucket,” Janine said with a small smile and nod.

“Oh I’m sorry,” he said sympathetically.

“Oh she’s not dead, believe me, old Bubbe Melnitz will live on outta spite,” Janine said with a laugh, “If only to prove my mom right.”

“Sounds about right,” Dana said a fond smile on her face, “My mom can be a force of nature, got that from my grandmother.”

Janine nodded with a smile and went back to eating her broth.

“I may move in with your grandmother after eating this roast,” Ray said between bites of food.

“She’s planning a move out here believe it or not,” Janine said with a roll of her eyes, “Something about needing a break from my sister, her husband I don’t know.”

“I’m moving,” Ray said boyishly causing the group to laugh.

Janine noticed her silent partner, taking his sweet time eating his soup and approached him.

“You ok?” She asked quietly.

He nodded and kept eating.

“It’s official J’s broken him!” Peter said boisterously.

Dana nudged him.

“What?” Peter said, “She did!”

“Keep going Doc,” Janine warned.

Ray, Winston and Louis focused on their plates as Peter toyed with his comfort.

Egon looked at Peter brow raised wondering if Peter was really going to play this game. He knew they were all coming down from a rather severe adrenaline high, however Peter being Peter needs to stop before he’s sleeping outside. It surprised him how Peter seems to forget that Janine wrangles them and works the business from top to bottom.

Janine glared at Peter and felt she only needed one more push.

“Pete,” Ray said quietly, “Do you really wanna risk sleeping outside?”

Peter scoffed, “She wouldn’t dare.”

“We’ll see about that,” Janine said having had enough.

The other three ghostbusters shared a look and new that Janine had about had it with Peter. Winston for his part knew coming down from an adrenaline high depends on the person, it doesn’t surprise him one bit that Peter’s would be for him to be his ever joyous self time a hundred. And by the dubious look in Janine’s eye, something is bound to happen.

Peter smirked thinking he’d won one over their spunky secretary. Unbeknownst to him, he’d sealed his fate.

After eating, Ray volunteered to get himself and Peter some clothes while Janine looked and hunted down a pair of sweats for the taller woman to wear. Winston, bless him, volunteered to wash the dishes as Egon dried and set them aside to put away later. Louis bid everyone a farewell as he left with Winston and Ray. Winston opted to run, he has no death wish, he also knows his girl will help get Dana some clothes for the next few days.

With them gone, Janine ignored Peter’s quips and focused on keeping her blood pressure down and not letting him get even more under her skin than he was. She prepped her tub for Dana knowing the woman needed some much needed processing time.

“Bath is filling if you want to go ahead and take a long soak,” Janine said with a sympathetic smile, “There’s two scents to choose from and take as long as you need. I’ll drop off the clothes so don’t worry if you hear the door opening and closing.”

Dana nodded and thanked her grateful to have a moment to herself.

Peter went to the guest room and promptly passed out.

After putting the extra clothes on the counter for Dana, Janine made her way to the master bedroom, closed the door and stripped.

Egon saw her go and trailed after her. He made sure to be quiet when entering the room seeing she’d been changing. He locked the door and approached her from behind making sure to put some force under his feet so as to not startle her.

Janine turned to find Egon walking up to her just as she was about to unhook her bra and said, “Not tonight. Especially not with the others here.”

Egon dropped kisses on her left shoulder and up her neck and said, “I know. You’re mine and I don’t share.”

Janine felt that to her core, this was a first for her. To actually witness him be as possessive as he was currently being.

Egon pulled off the bra and took her in.

“You look as beautiful as the night I asked you to marry me,” he said softly pulling her to him in a hug.

Janine sighed into his chest again and yawned feeling exhaustion take hold.

Egon nudged her to get in bed before stripping to his boxers and joining her. He pulled her to him and held her close.

Janine tangled their legs together needing to feel him close.

“Ya know what I forgot to do?” Janine said just before passing out.

“Hm?”

“I forgot to shove Peter out the back door,” Janine said lightly exhaustion clear in her voice.

Egon chuckled at this and pressed a kiss to her forehead.

The Following Morning

The couple woke up to the smell of smoke and yelling coming from the kitchen.

Egon and Janine made quick work of putting something on before running out to find a green ghost in her kitchen doing a good job of eating the burnt up…whatever it was that’s in the pan. She looked to find Dana in the corner wide eyed as Peter tried to put the fire out.

“Looks like we may have found ourselves a new pet,” Egon said rubbing the sleep from his eyes.

“And an over abundance of ghost slime,” Ray said as he went to help Dana up.

Janine rolled her eyes at their antics and figured this is her new family, she might as well get used to it.

The other women of the Addams family (1)

 I will not start chronologically with Chas Addams’ work this time - rather I will begin with the two iconic 90s Addams family movies.

LOIS ADDAMS

Sorry for the poor-quality image, it is the one used by the Addams Family Wiki and I couldn’t get a screenshot myself.

Lois Addams can be seen in the movie during the Fester’s ball/ Mamushka scene. She doesn’t have any line and isn’t even named - she is just one of the Addams guests, a very short woman with a brown/gold dress, played by Patty Maloney. But quite noticeably she is one of the Addams women that provide the tambourines for the Mamushka dance. 

We have a tiny bit more information about her in the script for the movie, in which we learn that she is named Lois Addams and that she is the “child-sized wife” of Slosh Addams. Due to her being a small woman and her husband being described as “toad-like”, I strongly believe they are supposed to be the movie’s version of the “wall-eyed couple” from Chas Addams original drawings (though Lois Addams clearly doesn’t look the slightest like the wall-eyed wife, beyond a simple question of size). 

“HEIDI”

I do not have any picture for her, but she is like Lois one of the guests at the Addams great ball, and one of the women that provide the percusions for the Mamushka - she is recognizable by her very long blond braids. Played by Victoria Hall in the movie, she is merely called the “Swedish Blonde” in the credits for the movie, but in the script we get a slightly more detailed description of her: she is actually the date of Digit Addams (a four-armed man), and described as an “over-age Heidi, with thick blonde braids”. Due to her not receiving any name and just being described as the date of a “proper” Addams, I believe she might not be born into the Addams... 

THE AMOR TWINS

Flora and Fauna Amor are... technically not part of the Addams Family, and yet still part of it. They have a clearly different last name, they are only involved romantically with Gomez and Fester (so unlike you believe the Addamses aren’t again dating distant cousins or far-away branches of the clan...). BUT on the other hand they are not just invited to Fester’s grand return ball, they are also present during Debbie’s wedding as guests, AND they are part of the tambourine-players for the Mamushka... And in the script is is pretty much explicitely explained that the tambourines are wielded by “Morticia, Granny and all the Addams women”. All clues showing that they are actually tied and close enough to the family to be considered a part of it... All of this is really bizarre and murky. But hey, that’s the Addams we are talking about.

Played by the Lewis twins (Maureen Sue and Darlene) as adults, they first appear as teenagers in the memorabilia of Gomez and Fester: as we learn, they were twin sisters romantically involved with the Addams brothers when they were teenagers/young adults - the two brothers notably were the dates of the twin sisters during their “debutante ball”. As it is revealed, they are the cause of the feud between the Addams brothers: apparently Fester was quite in love with the twins but Gomez, prideful and jealous of Fester’s “dashingness” decided to wooe the two sisters out of spite, and this started the tensions between him and his brother. 

They reappear at Fester’s grand ball, where it is revealed that they are siamese twins. Dressed in mauves and lavenders, they are shown to be both very bickering and very flirty: Gomez, Fester, Tully, they are interested in ALL the men they encounter (though, while they just use Tully as an “amusement” and having moved on from Gomez even being friendly with Morticia, their real interest lies with Fester due to him being the “king of the castle” and the rightful owner to the manor and the house - they keep trying to seduce him as a result). As for the bickering part, they regularly spite each other: they regularly insult one another, each one always claims to be the “first” to do anything while the other is just a “copy-cat” or “tag-along”, and they cannot stand when people mistake one for another. They also seem to hold the delusion that each one can live separately from the other or be “alone” . The script actually clarifies a bit their bizarre behavior - on top of noting that, from youth to adulthood, they stayed beautiful red-heads, it is also said that they are quite insane. In their youth they were noted to have “dementia in their eyes”, and as adult they still look “quite mad”.

And if this wasn’t clear enough, when the Amor twins leave the Addams party their craziness is revealed by the fact that their “ride”... is a ride to a mental hospital for the criminally insane, coupled with a two-person straightjacket to wrap them in. 

COUNTESS APHASIA

This character might seem quite mysterious and out-of-the-blue for those who watch “The Addams Family Values”. One Addams woman, played not by a woman but by Charles Busch, a notorious drag-queen, insults Wednesday when she catches the bouquet at Debbie’s wedding saying “It is not binding”. This character, with her iconic line “Tramp!” is merely listed in the credits as “Countess Cousin Aphasia du Berry”.

And as for many of those small Addams Family characters, we must look back at the original scripts to find more information about her.

In the shooting script “Countess Aphasia” is described as one of the many guests showing up for Fester’s wedding. Described as a “tattered, gin-soaked actress” she is noted to have a “Tallulah basso” (of course a reference to Tallulah Bankhead) - the script explicitely writes “She might be a man”. 

Another interesting fact: when Morticia presents her to Debbie, her name was originally going to be “Countess Aphasia Dubarry-Addams” (not “du Berry” as in the finished movie). When Morticia says Aphasia is an actress, she says to Debbie “Enchante. Have you seen any of my films?”. Debbie replies she is not sure, to which Aphasia asks “Where you in the Army?”. We see her interact again with Debbie during the deleted scene of the gift-shower: Aphasia offers the future bride “something old”, as per the tradition... which turns out to be stained, ripped and clearly used lingerie. 

Beyond that, Aphasia was supposed to form a sort of “unofficial” duo with Ophelia Addams: they are the two Addams women that Morticia presents to Debbie one after another ; when Debbie throws the bouquet they are noted to be the two first women to launch themselves on it before a riot breaks out, and finally during the wedding ceremony there was this exchange written between them:

ANGLE on Ophelia and Aphasia, among the guests. Ophelia dabs at her eyes with a lace hanky.

OPHELIA: I do love weddings. Have you ever been married?

APHASIA: Oh yes.

OPHELIA: In white?

APHASIA: In Berlin.

Despite all of these scenes being cut, Aphasia can still be seen beyond the “Tramp” scene in the background during the wedding sequence: during the wedding ceremony she can be sit next to a weeping Ophelia on the second row, left square, right next to the middle alley ; when Debbie leaves the house she is again with Ophelia right next to the door cheering on them ; and during the scene of Debbie meeting with Margaret you can briefly glimpse Aphasia walking around the room, with red hair, a glass in her hand, and a big white fur stole.

Kun Lalli tuli kotia. niin Lallin paha emäntä pieksi suuta kunnotonta, käytti kieltä kelvotonta: "Jo tässä kävi väkeä, täss' on syöty, täss' on juotu, tässä purtua pidetty, viety heiniä hevosen, hietaa annettu sijalle, syöty leivät uunin päältä, sijalle kivensiruja, olut juotu kellarista, santaa annettu sijalle." Paimen kirkui kiukahalta, parkui poika pankoltansa: "Vaimosi puhuu valetta, elä usko tuota naista!" Vaan Lalli pahatapainen, mies kovin pahasukuinen, kohta keihäänsä kokosi, piru suuren kirvehensä, sukset seinältä sivalti, lykkäsi lylyn lumelle, työnsi kalhun kaljamalle, hiihti herrojen perähän.

This was extremely difficult to do. The first two were easy, since they are my ride or die, but choosing 10 different characters? From ten different things? I don’t know if I even like 10 different things, but I found some loopholes, lol.

1. Lara Croft - Tomb Raider

Lara Croft has been one of my idols since I was a small child. My mom had bought Tomb Raider: Starring Lara Croft and Tomb Raider: Adventures of Lara Croft for my sister on the PlayStation. I remember watching my sister play it, and then sometimes I was allowed to play it. I continued the Tomb Raider legacy throughout the years.

Lara Croft is just. Amazing. I love every version of her. Classic Lara deflected the life her parents had wanted her to have, and paid the price for it. Did that stop her? No, it did not! She was able to make her own mark in the world. LAU!Lara wanted to find out what happened to her mother, and honestly I love Keeley Hawes as Lara. She was witty and funny, and Legend is one of my favorite TR games. And Reboot!Lara? I love her. I honestly don’t care what people say, Reboot!Lara is great! Her first game is also fun to play. Each version of Lara Croft offers something different, and I love it. While many of Lara’s core values are in each incarnation (adventurous, ambitious, brave, etc.), each brings a new perspective which I enjoy!

Fun fact: my irl best friend and Lara share the same zodiac sign!

2. Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch) - Marvel

I LOVE WANDA MAXIMOFF WITH ALL MY HEART!!! She’s a huge comfort character for me. She’s one of the most powerful mutants (yes, I am ignoring the retcon), and she’s complex. Wanda first appeared in X-Men #4 alongside her brother, Pietro, as members of Magneto’s Brotherhood. Eventually, the twins become heroes and join the Avengers.

Wanda’s mutation is magic; probability, to put it at best. She can warp reality. While she is strong, she is also human. Many remember her best as having a mental breakdown and creates House of M (influenced by her beloved brother). After this, she goes off the radar for a few years before her reincarnated sons find her.

I love Wanda because she has heart, courage, and cares for others. She’s intuitive and sensitive and, in many ways, reminds me of myself. I genuinely love Wanda with all my heart. She remains to be my number one favorite superhero. I wish more people knew her--the real her. The MCU does not do her (or her brother) justice. At all. (At least AOU kind of got their “reluctant villains to heroes” origin story well enough?)

Also: fuck you Marvel for retconning Magneto as the Maximoffs’ father. It’s been 5 years but I still elect to ignore that.

3. Phoebe Halliwell - Charmed

Growing up, Charmed was one of my favorite TV shows. To sum it up, it’s about a group of sisters who discover that they’re witches. Specifically, they’re the Charmed Ones and they protect the innocent. For awhile, I’ve said that Piper is my favorite sister but after my last rewatch, I say that Phoebe is my favorite.

At the beginning of the series, Phoebe was the youngest and the rebel of the family. Before the pilot, Phoebe was living in New York but we see her move back in. We also see that she has a strained relationship with her eldest sister, Prue, due to her scummy fiancé. Phoebe is also the reason why their magic was unlocked. (As children, their powers were bounded in order to keep them safe.)

Over time, we see Phoebe mature more. However, there are a few things that never changes with Phoebe. She’s kind and caring for others, always wanting to help them no matter what. (She shares this trait with the youngest sister, Paige.) She is deeply connected with her emotions (which causes her to gain the power of empathy in season 6). Phoebe has also had rough luck with love (see: Cole the demon, etc.) but no matter how much she gets hurt, Phoebe still has hope. She still has love in her heart. No matter how much she gets knocked down, she finds a way of getting back up, and I admire her a lot for it.

4. Catelyn Stark - A Song of Ice and Fire

Family. Duty. Honor. This is House Tully’s family motto, which is deeply embedded into Catelyn. Catelyn was married to Ned Stark during Robert’s Rebellion, after her former betrothed was murdered in King’s Landing (who, ironically, was Ned’s older brother). Their wedding night resulted in the birth of their firstborn: Robb Stark, heir to Winterfell and King in the North.

Catelyn Stark is the mother of the wolves, and her love for her family is no doubt a core of her character. However, Catelyn is clever and if you mess with her, you will certainly gain her wrath. Her eldest values her for her wisdom, and will turn to her for help. She will do anything for her family, such as freeing Jaime Lannister to get her girls back, or offering herself to save her eldest during the horrific events of the Red Wedding.

Catelyn is murdered, along with majority of the Stark party, at the Red Wedding. However, she is resurrected and becomes Lady Stoneheart. Stoneheart is out for vengeance, because she believes all of her children are gone; taken by the enemy. Stoneheart murders Frey or Lannister alike--whoever is associated with them. She holds no mercy.

There is so much more to Catelyn that I could go on, but I will stop here. (Besides, I need to reread the books again!) I will say this: fuck you, D&D.

5. Erik Lehnsherr (Magneto) - Marvel

MAGNETO TIME? MAGNETO TIME.

Erik Lehnsherr was a young boy when World War II happened and because he was Jewish, he was sent to Auschwitz. His family did not survive, but Erik did. Depending on what you follow on, Erik either A) escaped with Magda (who is the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver’s mother) and started a life with her or B) he hunted down the men who worked for Sebastian Shaw (movie universe).

Anyway, Erik had been a mutant since around the time he was sent to the camps and after the horror and trauma he’s faced, Erik decided that mutants would never be accepted by “their less evolved kin”. So, he became Magneto, a protector for mutants and enemy for humans.

Magneto is only one side of the coin, however. Charles Xavier is a longtime frenemy of sorts, both having different perspectives in life. Xavier believes in coexistence, but Magneto believes otherwise. He had seen what humanity is capable of, and he never wants that to happen again. If he must be a villain, than so be it.

Magneto is beautifully complex. He has done some questionable things (I’m thinking of the comics for this one), but he has also done great things for his people. “Never again,” he says. He fights to keep it that way. Magneto is sympathetic at best, and I certainly understand where he comes from. Tell me this: if you were Magneto, what would you have done?

Also: while Michael Fassbender is not Jewish in any way, he did one hell of a job portraying this amazing character.

6. Kira Yukimura - Teen Wolf

I wasn’t planning on adding Teen Wolf to the list, but here I am.

Kira was introduced to us in season 3b, written as a “new love interest” for Scott McCall. I remember a lot of fans of a certain ship were pissed, but whatever. I’m not here to talk about romance.

So, in 3b Kira was a new student, with her dad as the new history teacher at Beacon Hills High School. She’s of both Korean and Japanese descent, and she ends up playing an important role in the story arc. We find out that she’s a Kitsune, thanks to her mother who explains how a Kitsune and a werewolf must come together to defeat the Nogitsune, who happens to be possessing the loveable Stiles Stilinski.

After this, Kira becomes a part of the McCall Pack and Scott’s girlfriend. In my opinion, they’re cute together but many people hate them together. Oh well. Kira also becomes a badass in her own right, as her abilities evolve. However, in season 5, the creators put her on the shelf, as she trains with Skinwalkers and is never seen again. I am so fucking MAD about that.

Like many characters on this list, Kira has heart and courage. She’s a bit of an introvert but she is loyal, and cares for her pack. She’s cute and a bit goofy. She is skilled and deadly. Kira is one of the coolest characters Teen Wolf had, and the way they treated her was disappointed. (Even though after her death, Allison was always mentioned/connected in some way. I like Allison, don’t get me wrong but all I can say is: interesting...)

Fun fact: Arden Cho, the actress, is the VA for Sam Nishimura in Tomb Raider (2013)!

7. Lois Wilkerson - Malcolm in the Middle

The mother of four boys, the matriarch of the Wilkerson household is not one to push around.

Lois has had a rather rough life. Her parents were not the best, and everyone tries to push her down. However, Lois fights back and is not afraid to stand up for what is right. Francis, her oldest, describes her as an absolute menace and while her sons and husband fear her, they also admire her for her strength and courage. Lois is tough as nails, but she can also break, too. However, her family--the family she and Hal created, no one else--is there for her. Lois is incredibly strong willed no matter what, and I love her so much.

8. Theon Greyjoy - A Song of Ice and Fire

No words can describe on how much I love this fashionable war criminal.

Before the start of the series, Theon is a hostage/ward of Lord Stark, as a result of his father’s failed rebellion. Theon was a reminder that if Balon Greyjoy pulled something again, his last (male) heir would get the chopping block. Pretty brutal for a young child, right?

Now, at the start of the series, Theon is nineteen and is seemingly best friends with Robb Stark, the heir to Winterfell and the North. He shows loyalty to Robb and the Starks, claiming that Lord Stark was like a father to him. He’s also skilled with archery and, like I mentioned earlier, fashion.

Then A Clash of Kings occur, and we began to see how Theon Greyjoy is.

Robb Stark has been proclaimed as King of the North, and sends Theon to the Iron Islands in hopes to gain allies with Balon Greyjoy. However, this does not occur. Old Greyjoy says “fuck that and if you’re [Theon] aren’t with us, then you‘re against us.” We see Theon conflicted, but we also see how strained his relationship with his father is. In the end, Theon joins the Greyjoys, and promptly sacks Winterfell. However, that is not the end. Theon is tricked by Ramsay Bolton and this vile man takes Winterfell. I believe while he took the women and children captive, the men were killed...save for Theon, of course.

Theon is held captive by Ramsay Bolton, and is tortured quite brutally. Theon goes through a lot in this time. His appearance had changed drastically: black hair turned white and brittle, he becomes skin and bones, and loses a few fingers and toes. Theon is no longer Theon. He became Reek. The new Reek.

Then, Jeyne Poole (or Sansa; I hate you D&D) arrives, under the guise that she is Arya Stark and she is to wed Ramsay Bolton. Jeyne begged Theon to help her, but he is in no position of power. He is a completely broken man. Time flies by. Jeyne is in absolute misery but with the help of Mance and some spearwives, Theon is able to escape Winterfell with Jeyne during a winter storm. Currently, in the books, Theon is set to be executed by Stannis Baratheon, who is currently holding him captive.

Theon Greyjoy may be a fuckup, but to me he is such an amazing character. He holds much conflict, from being a hostage/ward to Prince to prisoner. Theon Greyjoy may have done a lot of shit, but he is also a survivor. Everything he has been put through, he somehow lives to see another day. Despite holding negative feelings to Lord Stark and everyone around, claiming he owed no one anything (fair enough), he loved Robb. When Theon had found out he was murdered at the Red Wedding, you know what he thought?

I should have been with him. Where was I? I should have died with him.

Theon is far from perfect, but that is what makes him great. He has come so far, and I hope his journey does not end any time soon.

9. Suki - Avatar: The Last Airbender

Zuko may have the best redemption arc (or does he? See above.), but Suki holds a special place in my heart.

We first meet Suki season one, on Kyoshi Island. She is the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors, and effectively puts Sokka in his place. However, when Sokka requests a few lessons, Suki is happy to help...as long as he followed the guidelines.

Suki is a certified badass. Although a non-bender, Suki has incredible skill and event went against Azula. However, Suki and the others surrendered (so that Appa would not be captured), leading to her imprisonment at Boiling Rock. Eventually, Sokka and Zuko free her (with the help of Mai). After this, Suki joined the Gaang in ceasing the 100 Year War.

Suki is strong but like many other characters in this list, she has heart. She is an effective leader and fighter, offering her help whenever she can. Too bad she was never mentioned in The Legend of Korra. Suki is underrated and she deserves more love and respect.

10. Max Mayfield - Stranger Things

We first meet Max in season 2 as the new girl in Hawkins. She seems like your average girl but she quickly gets tied into the party after Lucas begs her to show her what has happened with him and the rest of the party. However, there’s a lot more to Max.

Max moved to Hawkins with her mother, stepfather, and stepbrother. It’s easy to see that Max and Billy, her stepbrother, do not get along. Billy is outright mean to her, lashing out at practically every chance he gets. Max fights back, however...especially when he threatens her friends.

In season 3, we finally get to see Max and El bond. (Thank God we didn’t have to put up with the “jealousy” tidbit. I would have--) El believes that Mike is lying and Max is like, “Well yeah. Come on let’s go to the mall!” and the girls have a blast together. I was so happy to see the two bond and have fun. I was so happy that El was spending time with someone other than Mike. I was so happy the girls were having fun by themselves. Honestly, the best part of season 3 was them becoming friends.

I love Max because she is confident and is not afraid to speak her mind. She’s funny and in many ways, we are alike. (Especially with our attitudes on boys and relationships.) However, Max is also vulnerable. We see this with her stepbrother, especially in season 3 I think. Their relationship was drastically different in season 3 and while many didn’t like it (myself included)...I also thought about Max. She’s a young girl and no matter how much bad blood was in between them, it will be traumatizing to see a transformation like this to someone you know quite well. It would be scary.

Anyway, I love Max.
