Wiblingen Abbey Library  Wiblingen Abbey was a former Benedictine abbey which was later used as barracks. Today its buildings house several departments of the medical faculty of the University of Ulm. The former abbey is located south of the confluence of the rivers Danube and Iller, south of the city of Ulm in the German state of  Baden-Württemberg. Administratively, the former independent village of Wiblingen now belongs to the city of Ulm. The abbey is part of the Upper Swabian Baroque Route.

BEN HARDY (1921-1994)

Custom motorcycle builder Ben Hardy was born Benjamin F. Hardy on July 25, 1921, in Los Angeles, California. However, historical data regarding his family, upbringing, and obituary have yet to be recovered from the annals of time.

After World War II, as the United States experienced a slight depression with high unemployment, and California had an unemployment rate of 8.8% compared to a national average of 3.9% in 1946, Hardy established Hardy’s Motorcycle Service shop in South Central Los Angeles, located at 1168 E. Florence Avenue. He built two ‘Billy’ bikes and three’ Captain Americas,’ made at that time from a 20-year-old, heavily customized Harley-Davidson Panhead, with the assistance of another Black motorcycle builder, Cliff Vaughn, the most famous motorcycles ever made.

Los Angeles, California, was a city divided and segregated along racial lines, and it did not welcome Hardy and his creation into the mainstream motorcycle world. However, Hardy and Black motorcyclists continued riding the typical ‘Billy’ bike in their limited circle. In the 1950s, during the high point of Jim Crow, some viewed the camaraderie of riding a customized Harley chopper creatively in a group as a revolutionary act.

In 1969, Hardy’s chopper was showcased in the iconic 1969 motorcycle film Easy Rider, in which two bikers travel through the Southwest and South of the U.S. with lots of money from a cocaine deal. His bikes were duplicated for this movie if mechanical failure or wreckage during film shortage were anticipated. The film Easy Rider brought in more than $60 million; however, Hardy was inadequately recognized and did not benefit financially from the movie’s success.

In 2014, 20 years after the death of Hardy, the Captain America bike sold for $1.35 million. Four years later, in 2018, Hardy’s work was featured in the “Black Chrome” at the California African American Museum. This exhibit, sponsored by the Automobile Club of Southern California, the most prominent member of the AAA Federation of Motor Clubs, was about the historical development of African American motorcycle culture. A replica of Hardy’s Captain America bike is housed in one of Germany’s largest motorcycle collections at the German Two-Wheeler and NSU Museum in northern Baden-Württemberg.

Ben Hardy died in 1994. He was 74.

Oh- on the topic of johann von württemburg; when episode 4 of protocol came out the whole “old timey German guy + his nephew” thing ofc instantly reminded me of the episode Schwarzwald so I looked up the locations in it just out of curiosity. The violinist was headed for Mannheim, which is in the German state today known as Baden-württemburg! I imagine the forest he met the stranger who seemed to compel him and then gave him the violin in probably was the Black Forest based on the locations he mentions? Unsure if this means anything but it was interesting to me

oh ho ho. I don't know enough about german states to say whether contemporary baden-württemberg would be in the same place as the setting of mag 23 and I think my alchemy tomes have maxxed out my magpod background research quota for this weekend, but hmmm...

1918 04 Remember me - Russell Smith

Remember Me? depicts a hypothetical but plausible encounter between and Bristol F2.b of 48th Squadron, RAF and a Fokker Dr.1 triplane piloted by Leutnant d. R. Friedrich "Fritz" Kempf of Jasta 2 (Boelcke). The scene depicts Kempf zooming up and past the Bristol, catching the crew by surprise. The client was fairly specific about the attitudes and positions of the aircraft, but he left the overall composition and the choice of Bristol markings up to me.The Bristol Fighter was a maneuverable, heavily armed two-seater biplane, and one of the most successful fighters of the war. It got off to a poor start during "Bloody April" when it was introduced to the Western Front by the inexperienced pilots. Believing that the aircraft was structurally weak, pilots avoided violent maneuvers during combat. It was soon realized, however, that the Bristol fighter was actually a very sturdy aircraft that could be maneuvered as if it were a single seat fighter with rear protection. Bristol crews met with great success by using their aircraft in that capacity. By the end of the war over 240 pilots and gunners achieved ace status in the type. My choice of markings for this particular Bristol was personal. Growing up in SC I often attended the Shawfest airshow at Shaw Air Force Base located in Sumter. In my 20’s, as a budding aviation artist, I donated a painting to the 20th Fighter Wing which was based at Shaw AFB at the time. For those reasons I have had long felt a familiar connection to Shaw AFB. A few years back, though that connection became very personal. While doing some research on Ancestry I found that I had a great great grandfather who was a Shaw and who was born in Sumter, SC. I knew immediately there had to be a connection to Shaw AFB. After further research I came to find that Shaw AFB was named after 1st Lt. Ervin David “Molly” Shaw, the first Sumterite killed in the WWI & the only Sumter Aviator to die in combat. Shaw served with the 48th Squadron, RAF, British Expeditionary Force. In combat, he is credited with shooting down two enemy aircraft. On July 9, 1918, well behind enemy lines on a scouting mission, he and his British observer were greatly outnumbered by enemy scout planes and they perished in battle. They were flying Bristol F2b B-1113 at the time. As it turns out, 1st Lt. Ervin David Shaw, after whom Shaw AFB is named, was my great-grandmother’s cousin!Frederich "Fritz" Kempf was born in May 1894 in Freiburg in the town of Breisgau in the southwest of Baden-Württemberg. At age 19, he joined infantry in October 1913 and by August of the following year was promoted to Unteroffizier . After being wounded in battle and a lengthy hospital stay he applied for a transfer to the Luftstreitkraefte. Once accepted he arrived at FEA 3 in Gotha on May 6, 1915. He was then sent back to Freiburg to complete training and then on to FEA 9 at Darmstadt at the end of November 1915. In March 1917, after serving with various aviation units, he received the Iron Cross 1st Class and joined Jasta 2 "Boelcke". He scored his first victory on 29 April - a BE2c near Le Pave. His second was a Sopwith Pup on 5 June at Masnieres, then the 3rd was a Camel on 20 Oct. at Gravenstafel.He was sent to Jasta-Schule I as an instructor , returning to Jasta Boelcke in January 1918. On 8 May he scored his fourth victory, a Camel west of Steenwerke. He returned to Jasta-Schule I in August 1918 where he served until the end of the war. Although he only had 4 victories to his credit at war’s end, Kempf was none the less a respected and valued member of Jasta Boelcke. He died in August 1966.Of the aircraft that Fritz Kempf flew during his wartime career, perhaps the most recognizable were a pair of Fokker Dr.1 triplanes which carried similar

Hauff’s novel romanticized the ideals of medieval chivalry and heroism. The 19th century experienced a resurgence in interest in medieval history and architecture, a trend known as historicism. Count Wilhelm sought to create a physical embodiment of the novel's themes and settings. Neuschwanstein Castle itself was influenced by similar romantic and historicist ideals and a 2009 filming of "Dornröschen" - The Sleeping Beauty - further cemented Lichtenstenstein's place in popular culture. The family of the Dukes of urach which began when Wilhem was granted the title maintains ownership to this day. The castle serves both as a private residence for the family and a public attraction, allowing visitors to explore its historical and architectural significance.

In 1962 architect Egon Eiermann finally moved into his own house in Baden-Baden, Germany, after having spent years in a small and sparsely furnished apartment in Karlsruhe, the city where he also taught at the university. His family home, he lived here with his second wife Brigitte and his daughter Anna, is one of only two houses he built after WWII and an exceptional piece of postwar modern architecture in Germany. At the same time it is one of four projects Eiermann realized in Mittelbaden, a vaguely defined region in the Baden part of Baden-Württemberg, that comprise the Hardenberg House as well as the administration of „Stahlbau Müller“ and the „Burda Moden“ office building, both located in Offenburg.

Mittelbaden also is the sphere of journalist and architectural historian Ulrich Coenen who in recent years has dedicated a number of articles to Eiermann’s works in the region.

In order to conclude his research Coenen recently published „Egon Eiermann in Mittelbaden - Anmerkungen zu seinen Villen und seinen Gewerbebauten in Offenburg“ with Verlag Mainz, a small but substantial volume. The author exclusively focuses on the four buildings mentioned earlier, locates them within the complete works of the architect and recounts their genesis in detail. In addition Coenen also sheds light on Eiermann’s prewar buildings as well as his involvement with the Nazi regime: although he wasn’t a party member he nonetheless received a number of important commissions for industrial buildings and even designed a propaganda exhibition.

But the main focus lies on the buildings and their meaning for Eiermann’s work: while the Burda building (1953-54) was ahead of its time and had a lasting impact on the design office buildings well into the 1960s, the two villas and the Stahlbau Müller building share the two-layer façade, a typical Eiermann element. And it is these two villas that are a real rarity in his oeuvre as they are the only postwar houses.

By focusing on only four buildings, Ulrich Coenen’s book is a dense and very insightful book that unites different strands of research and does away with some of the myths surrounding Eiermann’s work. Warmly recommended!

Der Großmann

Origin

Der Großmann originated in the 16th century in Germany with woodcuts carved by an unknown artist. Der Großmann was often described as a fairy of the Black Forest who abducted bad children that entered the forest at night, and would stalk them until they confessed their wrongdoings to a parent.

Alongside one of the wood cuttings in the New York Library there is a note that says "Steigen sie nie in seinen wald ein" which roughly translates to "Never enter into its forest"

Translated 1702 journal entry

“My child, my Lars… he is gone. Taken, from his bed. The only thing that we found was a scrap of black clothing. It feels like cotton, but it is softer… thicker. Lars came into my bedroom yesterday, screaming at the top of his lungs that "The angel is outside!" I asked him what he was talking about, and he told me some nonsense fairy story about Der Großmann. He said he went into the groves by our village and found one of my cows dead, hanging from a tree. I thought nothing of it at first…But now, he is gone. We must find Lars, and my family must leave before we are killed. I am sorry, my son… I should have listened. May God forgive me.”

Schlankwald

The following is the English translation of a German poem describing the Schlankwald which may be linked to Der Großmann. Not just because Schlankwald translates to 'slim forest' but the two have other similarities. The poems origin date is unknown.

“They say that monsters come only at night,     That light will drive them away.     But not all creatures follow this rule,     Safety not certain during the day.     He hides on the fringes of your vision,     Brief glimpses of the distorted.     He slithers and writhes behind your eyes,     Reaching for you, limbs contorted.     Before you know it your children are taken,     And now it's come down to you.     His breath is oppressive, his presence acidic,     He feels pity is undue.    Suddenly, trapped in his grasp so tight,     You struggle to break yourself free.     He laughs and he gurgles and he screeches with glee,     He turns your head for you to see.     Your children are crying though their eyes are removed,     They collapse, still and silent.     His arms and legs bend pulling you closer,     The man's eyes dark and violent.     He strikes and he cuts, your skin flays open,     Your soul to weak to resist.     This should not have happened, if only you had listened,     Never go into his forest.”
