The Amputated Franken-Plus
Last year I revived an old Mac Plus that had been destructively robbed for parts over the years. I added sockets for the chips that had been removed, gave it a new power supply, added my SE-VGA card for video, and bodged a few broken traces. But there still remained the most heinously destructive part removal that had been committed against this poor board ...
Long before I had mastery of a soldering iron, and lacking the proper tools for desoldering components successfully, I had a project where I needed n 8-pin mini DIN connector. I had this non-functional Mac Plus board gathering dust so I decided to remove one of its connectors. With a knife. By cutting the board around the connector.
I was young ...
Obviously, there's no repairing that. The board has a permanent chunk removed from it.
However, I find myself wanting to be able to use those serial ports now that I have the rest of the board running. There are lots of fun things to use them for, like LocalTalk networking, printers, zTerm, etc.
So I set out to build a breakout board to add the connectors for these serial ports back to the board. I started by digging up datasheets for the RS-422 & RS-232 transceivers Apple used, as well as schematics for the Plus and similar era Macs so I could trace out how the connectors were originally wired. It turns out all of the signals for both ports are routed to some RC filters in a straight line at the back of the board. This made it fairly easy to solder a ribbon cable to the filter pins on the back side of the board.
I've come to like ribbon cables; they're easy to work with. I can just crimp an IDC connector on one end and attach them to some pin headers. The breakout board itself is just some generic protoboard, and has said pin headers and two female 8-pin mini-DIN connectors.
It's not ideal. The ribbon cable wires are fragile and cold easily be pulled off the motherboard. But hopefully this will restore the last lost functionally for this poor tortured Mac Plus motherboard.
I plan to include the Franken-Plus in my exhibit for VCF Southwest in Richardson, Texas this weekend (23-25 June 2023). If you're in the area, definitely stop by; it's shaping up to be a great show.

The eMate 300
The eMate 300 📟, a personal digital assistant made by Apple 🍎, was a low-cost laptop specifically for the education sector. Launched on March 7, 1997, and discontinued in 1998, it was the only Newton device with a built-in keyboard ⌨️. It had a 6.8" grayscale display, stylus pen 🖊️, infrared port, and Macintosh serial/LocalTalk ports, and was powered by rechargeable batteries that lasted up to 28 hours 🔋. Although less advanced and memory-equipped than its contemporary, the MessagePad 2000, the eMate 300 was faster than the previous MessagePad 130. 🚀

This was a page I put together when I was playing with all the little Macs, ca. ‘98. Click at the top for the page. Besides the hard drive (Strider) I’ve got the hard disks of several other Macs on the desktop of my SE/30 here.
I could just drag and drop files between drives on different Macs, all via TELEPHONE WIRE (4-wire) plugged into a LocalTalk connector, from Mac To Mac. I had a stable of ‘em for awhile. All named for Hobbits or other LOTR characters.
And here’s the link to the “index” of all the pages I put up about “MacArchaeology”, including several articles I wrote 20-odd years ago:
http://beebstuff.net/macarchaeology/index.html
Enjoy digging around the MacArchaeological Artifacts. I miss playin’ with them all. They’re all long gone.

Macs I Have Known...
Yep, that post earlier got me to diggin’ in the old hard drive. ‘Bout 20 years ago, I figured out that you could get an amazing assortment of vintage Macintosh and exotic flavors of video and accellerator cards at any and all thrift shops in Austin.
I went nuts, for a few years. Had a house full of Macs for a long time. Bought dozens of machines, gave away most of them, fully set up and decked out with groovy programs and add-ons. Wrote articles. Formed bonds that still exist, and have grown over the two decades that have passed since these silly little machines first brought us together in the ethers. (@misfitwashere)
These photos were of one phase of one of the setups I had. On the “peninsula” is “The Terrible Three Headed IIci”. Note groovy and sharp as a tack two-page, 15″ AV and flat-face Trinitron running. It was “LocalTalked” via 4-wire phone cords, to a ring of Compact Macs, running the gamut from the Original 128k to the SE/30.
In the corner, is “The Gaffer” a beautiful 128k given a Plus upgrade, with his original keyboard and number pad, HD20 Hard Drive, and external SCSI 40MB drive, SCSI’d up to an original Apple Scanner. Yep, that’s a modem. Yep, it still connected. And the external 800k drive worked.
There’s a third leg of the setup that was comprised of a IIfx with several heads, as well, one of them being an impeccable Portrait monitor that I kept up until this last year. Sigh. Miss the Portrait and Two Page most of all! That grayscale is SO MUCH EASIER ON THE EYES! Anyway, they’re all gone now!
Anyway...Yah..I’m an old MacHead. I’ll try and dig up some more photos of Das Beigeboxen. Now that I’m trying to re-integrate “regular posts”, I’m actually finding it therapeutic. Reminding myself of what I love. Especially now.

Linux netatalk server
LINUX NETATALK SERVER SOFTWARE
LINUX NETATALK SERVER WINDOWS
This can be useful if your Linux computer is on a Macintosh-dominated network that hosts printers that don't understand other protocols. Īn AppleTalk print client ” The pap program allows Linux to submit print jobs to AppleTalk-enabled printers or print servers. The papd server is controlled through nf, which is usually located in /etc/atalk. The print server features work only over the original AppleTalk, not via TCP/IP. Used in conjunction with Ghostscript (part of Linux's standard print queue), this allows you to share even an inexpensive inkjet printer as if it were a full-featured PostScript device. In addition, the fault file controls which directories are shared, and AppleVolumes.system maps filename extensions onto Macintosh file and creator types, which are stored directly on MacOS-native filesystems.Īn AppleTalk print server ” The papd program allows a Linux computer to operate as a print server for Macintosh systems. (In the event they don't, LocalTalk-to-Ethernet converter devices are available to bridge the gap.) This server is controlled through a file called nf, typically in /etc/atalk. The file server supports both native AppleTalk and TCP/IP, so Linux can serve even old Macintoshes, so long as they share a network hardware type. This package provides three features:Īn AppleTalk file server ” The afpd program allows a Linux computer to operate as a file server for Macintosh systems.
LINUX NETATALK SERVER SOFTWARE
The Netatalk package, which comes with most Linux distributions, is the primary AppleTalk software for Linux. Good security practices, as discussed in Part IV, can help secure a TCP/IP network, though, so AppleTalk isn't the only option for improving security. Similarly, disabling everything but AppleTalk printing on a network-enabled printer or print server can keep this system from being abused by outsiders, unless they first gain a foothold on another system in your local network. You can disable TCP/IP on a Netatalk server if you want to be absolutely certain that nobody can break into your system from outside your local network by exploiting a flaw in your Netatalk server. The fact that AppleTalk packets are seldom routable by typical routers makes AppleTalk a good choice for providing a little extra security. net) is the main program that uses AppleTalk in Linux it's discussed in the next section. Even in the case of Macintosh-dominated networks, the Unix-based MacOS X supports NFS as well as AppleTalk, so you may prefer to use NFS if your network's Macintoshes run MacOS X. There's seldom any reason to use AppleTalk except on a network that contains MacOS systems, though, because most other OSs provide better support for other network protocols.
LINUX NETATALK SERVER WINDOWS
Many network-enabled printers "speak" AppleTalk natively, and AppleTalk file-sharing protocols are understood by MacOS, Windows NT and 2000, Linux, BeOS, and other systems. The primary applications for AppleTalk are the file and printer sharing for which the protocols were developed. (In a zoned network, the computer attempts to set its zone automatically, and the zone name may bear no resemblance to anything in the TCP/IP hostname.) The two-tiered nature of AppleTalk names is an important limiting factor on AppleTalk networks without more layers of names, creating an AppleTalk network with more than a few hundred computers becomes awkward. For instance, if a computer has the TCP/IP hostname, the computer's AppleTalk name becomes larch. When you start Netatalk, the primary AppleTalk package for Linux, the software sets the system's AppleTalk name based upon the TCP/IP hostname, unless you override this setting. Small networks may be zoneless, meaning that the zone name doesn't obtrude itself upon users. Each computer has a name, and resides in a zone, which is a logical group of computers. (You can request a specific address or an address in a specific range if you want to, but this usually isn't necessary.)Ībove the AppleTalk numeric addresses lies a two-tiered alphabetic naming system that humans use more directly. AppleTalk includes a procedure by which the computers on the network can negotiate their own AppleTalk addresses, so you need not set this address explicitly. Also like TCP/IP, the AppleTalk address is broken down into two components ”a network address and a computer address however, the division of these two components is fixed, with each consuming 16 of the 32 bits available for the address. Like TCP/IP, AppleTalk uses a 32-bit machine address. If you run Linux on such a system, you will not be able to use the LocalTalk hardware, although you may still use AppleTalk over Ethernet, if the computer has a built-in Ethernet adapter or a supported Ethernet expansion card. Ironically, Linux doesn't support the LocalTalk hardware built into Macintosh computers.
