Split Review: Phantom Spire x Hauntfaerie - Black Spells over Wallachia
ok were bringing back music reviews even tho nobody read the original ones!!!!
Phantom Spire and Hauntfaerie are projects of Sorrel Holy Arrow, both fuse elements of raw black metal and dungeon synth music, with Phantom Spire emphasizing metal and Hauntfaerie comprising of softer, more synth-driven music.
Phantom Spire's side of the split is iconic. This is by far Phantom Spire's most popular work, with the first song having been sampled by the rapper Sematary on his song Truey Jeans. That being said, while the first song is the fan favorite of the two, I think the second track is better. Not for any particular reason, I just prefer it.
The first thing that strikes the listener upon playing the first track is the sense of melody that the music has. Most black metal has some focus on melody, usually in an effort to sound ~eeeevil~ or depressing, but this is music is actually very uplifting sounding. The melodies are powerful and driving, and never fail to make me feel better when I'm upset. The first 2 songs on this split feel like riding a dragon above the clouds on a freezing winter night towards ur epic wizard tower that's so tall it you can see it for hundreds of miles. In short, this is fucking AMAZING music.
Phantom Spire feels occult and mysterious in a way that most black metal just doesn't. It's almost like trying something new actually creates interesting music, something most black metal bands could learn from this EP.
The final track is by Hauntfaerie, and is titled Haunted By Fae Mix Vol. II. I LOVE THIS SONG SO FUCKING MUCH IT'S UNREAL. Haunted By Fae Mix Vol I. is one of my favorite songs ever and I've probably listened to it 20 times in the last 3 days even tho it's over 15 minutes long. Vol 2 is significantly shorter and much more upbeat, than its predecessor, but still focuses on melodic repetition and a continuous hypnotic beat. I love this song so much holy shit.
Hauntfaerie is a perfect combination with Phantom Spire, as they show 2 sides of the same coin. The music compliments eachother perfectly, creating a euphoric and mystical vibe that I haven't encountered anywhere else. This Split is a 100/100 project with no flaws.
