Not to make an already long post longer, but saw these great tags and wanted to respond:

I actually discuss exactly this in chapter 4 of The Essay in Marcille's section (starting under the heading "ELVEN SUPERIORITY"), that because Marcille is taller and heavier than most elves, and Kui shows repeatedly that she makes great efforts to be feminine (and gets upset when her femininity is questioned, or others don't obey gender norms the way she wants), I believe she is overcompensating by acting extra-feminine because she's afraid of people realizing she's a half-elf... Since everyone in-universe most likely believes "elves are small and feminine."

So failing to present in a feminine-enough way will make people assume she's a half-elf, and that has various social disadvantages.

Marcille is supposedly “not ashamed” of her half-elf status, however she hides it in her day-to-day life via omission and careful self-censoring, allowing people to believe that she is a full elf. The World Guide says that Marcille doesn’t tell people the truth because it would be “a hassle” or “too difficult” to explain, but the way this is phrased makes me think Kui is telling us this is only an excuse. Saying something is “too difficult” is a polite Japanese way of saying “no” or refusing to do it, so the implication is that Marcille simply doesn’t want to disclose her multi-racial status to anyone. It would be “a hassle” to explain because if people know she’s a half-elf, Marcille will have to defend herself and her family against all the assumptions she knows people will make: That her mother is a sub-standard, low-class elf scamming the short-lived races for her own benefit, that her father was a pathetic idiot that was seduced, and that Marcille is a foolish, immoral and incompetent half-breed who is jealous of real elves and desperately wants to be accepted by them, and is bitter about her inability to have children. She’ll have to explain that she isn’t like that, and probably not even be believed, so it’s better not to let anyone know that she’s a half-elf at all.

I think to elves, more than anything Marcille reads as a foreigner, she's not a REAL elf because she wasn't born in the west and she doesn't actually conform to their social standards, she doesn't know how elves dress, talk or act, because she was raised in the east.

Kui tricks us into thinking Marcille and Fionil are normal elves because they're the only ones we see for such a long time, but once a lot of actual elves from the west show up, we can see that they're very different from them, both in physical appearance, grooming and clothing, not to mention personality and behavior.

Marcille and Fionil are emotional and expressive, but the elves are (generally) much more cold and stoic... When we do see emotions from them, it's usually anger, not sadness or happiness.

Compare Marcille's elaborate ever-changing hairstyles to how every western elf has an extremely simple, minimalist hairstyle. Her weird, complicated outfit versus the extreme minimalism of elven clothing.

I believe this is in some ways a parallel Kui is making to Japanese culture, where Japanese people who have spent time outside of Japan are considered foreign, and often bullied or discriminated against for that, even if they are 100% ethnically Japanese. They've been "tainted" by living or being born overseas, and can never be "really Japanese" no matter what they do or how long they live in Japan.

As for Kabru...

Honestly there isn't really anything feminine about his presentation in my opinion, compared to other men in the story. He's just a beautiful fantasy South Asian man who was raised by both a mother "from a good family" and an elven noblewoman who gave him an extremely thorough education.

He wears the same clothing as all the other male characters, he's an extremely skilled and brutal physical fighter, he's a good leader, he doesn't wear makeup (Kui has told us several other characters do though!)... He's just naturally very beautiful, with long dark eyelashes and facial features common to Asian people, like a small nose, almond-shaped eyes and a small chin. These are traits that are often perceived as "more feminine", but many Asian men have them.

He's a sophisticated, cultivated gentleman with the old timey equivalent of a college education. He speaks multiple languages and knows about all the different world cultures, including their etiquette. None of these things are feminine, in fact in many ways he'd be considered the ideal upper-class man throughout most of history, someone who should work in a high level government position or rule a country.

He's like a prince, a nobleman, he's dreamy, he's ideal husband material, etc.

To the elves I think his gender presentation just seems "correct", and I imagine he often gets backhanded compliments like "wow, you act so much like an elf!" by which they mean "you almost act like a civilized human being! That's amazing, I didn't know tall-men could do that! You must be working really hard to reach our level."

So to the elves, he is androgynous but that's a good thing, and he seems to be masculine by their standards.

Probably this means he seems a bit androgynous or effeminate by the standards of the Eastern hemisphere (where Dungeon Meshi takes place) but that is because those standards are pretty harsh, and seem to be somewhat misogynistic... Remember, the dwarves (who set a lot of the cultural standards in the East) only respect people who have a beard, and they expect their women to shave. Meaning only bearded older men are considered "people" who matter and can impact society.

So until Kabru grows a beard (or glues one on) he'll probably be looked down on, and seen as a "lesser" category of man no matter what he does... But he knows the social etiquette for the societies in the Eastern hemisphere, so I think he's able to blend in and present "correctly" among them if he wants to.

Basically it depends on how dwarf-like the people Kabru interacts with are. To anyone who is deep into dwarven social norms (dwarves themselves, tall-men of the Northern Continent), he probably seems "too elf-like" to be considered a real man...

But people who follow gnomish social norms (gnomes and some of the tall-men in the Eastern Continent) might find him perfect, romantic ideal husband material, as I said. The kind of wonderful guy girls dream about marrying.

I could keep going but I wanted to try and keep this short LMAO it's a HUGE topic though, and incredibly complicated.

Basically I think Kabru's mostly just a Guy, and he's flexible enough to code switch to convey his Guy-ness to whomever he's around.

It is very cool! Cithis has a very overt gender presentation that we don't really see in other elves, even Otta who makes a point to present as male doesn't read as super masculine to the level of "hyper-feminine" that Cithis is

Elves seem to have their own fashion preferences independent of gender (from what we can tell from the gender swap)

Which makes sense, Lycion himself wears a very feminine hairstyle even in the original, so Pattadol also keeping the same hairstyle while she's a man is consistent! Meanwhile Cithis seems to be way more conscious of her own gender when dressing?

I wonder if presenting more feminine is more common than presenting more "masculine" for elves? Would a male elf dressed like Cithis be strange? I don't think Cithis is completely unique in how feminine she is cause we do see a few other elves with similar traits. Flamela has a exposed cleavage, Mysil has a long skirt, Daltian clan "Aunt Uranesse" seems very feminine with makeup and adorned hair, Cithis has it all at once but the pieces aren't unique I guess is what I'm saying

They say that for the most part there isn't much difference between male and female fashion but even here we have an elf in what we would call a "feminine" looking long dress

The biggest issue with the "critical" side of the acotar fandom is that very few offer any suggestions on how the books could be improved. They latch on to certain characters that they either identify with or feel have been wronged by other characters, making post after post on why x character "deserves better", why x character is actually a trump-adjacent dictator (and yes, you should feel bad for liking them), without considering any nuance or how characters are plot devices before they are "people." Their concern doesn't seem to be with the quality of the books/world building but that their favorite character who they deeply relate to is being used in a certain way that they don't like, without offering any type of interesting analysis or suggestions. In fact, the only suggestions they do make are objectively absurd considering who SJM's favorite characters are (you're never gonna see the entire IC getting killed off, sorry!) You can't be mad that you're surrounded by people who DO see the appeal of the main pairing when the entire selling point of the book series is enemies to lovers/villain gets the girl. And don't be mad when people just see you as goofy contrarians who don't have the critical thinking skills to provide an actual good critique of the series, nor have the creativity to write good fan fiction (if it's the potential of the series you're so concerned with)

The TLDR: Fontaine MSQ aestheticised prison, poverty, child abuse, the justice system/court and didn't properly address any of it.

Focalors/Furina has way too much of a sympathetic angle for a dictator who's lets people drown with her inaction.

Neuvillette feels Bad for sentencing some people to death/prison, but that's it. He's one of the most powerful people in Fontaine. If he felt like there are systemic injustices, I.E sending an abused Child to prison, he should be the first person to DO something about it, not just cry and be sad so the audience can be like aw, that's complex character writing isn't it? No it's not! And guilt doesn't absolve you!!!!!!! (These are stuff we deal with in OTCOJ read my fic now /j)

Meropide has children in it, both Sentenced there (Wriothesley) and BORN THERE (Lanoire), and this is just a quirk of the place. Not only that, Meropide accepts prisoners of all genders and crimes. There are abusers and abuse victims in one place. Do you know how bad that is? How much potential for crimes to happen in a place like that— oh wait, Meropide isn't under Fontaine's jurisdiction. If you are assaulted as an inmate it literally means nothing to the court.

Wriothesley had no qualifications when he took over. Depending on how long he lived on the streets, how old he was when he killed his parents, how old he was when he was first taken in by the orphanage, etc, the man might never have more than 4–5 years of formal education. Sigewinne probably had to teach him how to write reports. And do Meropide's spreadsheets. Edit because I forgot to elaborate on this one: This isn't a point brought up anywhere, which is bad, because when poverty and incarceration robs you of a proper education (and the rights to vote in many places too, too, by the way), it reduces your prospects for jobs, reduces many people's ability to get a home etc etc. Wriothesley was just, narratively, Given his position.

Meropide is an industrialized prison, and they portray this as a good thing. Prisoners are paid in coupons for their labour, and this is also portrayed as a good thing.

The One-Meal-A-Day reform was something Paimon gushed about being so great of a perk, that people might want to go to jail for food (could be interesting and reflective of systemic poverty if MHY had brains, but they don't, so I was just Pissed because essentially all Paimon wanted to say was "Prison isn't so bad, but still don't go to prison guys! Prison labour is really hard!"). By the way, in most real-world prisons they are obligated to feed you three meals a day. Because that's how much food a human needs. MHY went with one meal just so they can say "if you want to eat more, you have to work." And then the welfare meal is a goddamn gacha. So imagine you're a starving child who's too weak to work in the fucking robot assembly line, and you wander up for your first meal in 24 hours, only to luck in with a shit one. I'd kill myself.

They wrote Wriothesley, who's a victim of the system, into a guy who's say shit like "I'm the Duke I can do whatever I want" for a cool moment where he choke-slams an inmate (I know he was a bad guy. But also, in copaganda when cops are violent/disregarding protocols, they are always only portrayed to do that against bad guys, so what does our critical thinking tells us about this one?) They wrote Wriothesley, who was an inmate of a prison so bad, so notorious that it is the literal boogeyman of Fontaine, that has a legal (???) fighting pit, with an administrator who abuses his position to be unreasonable, to willingly stay in the place and become an Administrator who would choke-slam an inmate while saying a cool line about how he has the power to do whatever he wants. They wrote him, the guy who had to be fed on the streets by melusines, to think one-meal-a-day was a good enough reform (while he spends god-knows how much on his boat). This wasn't a victim-turns-into-abuser narrative either, they want all this to be seen as positive character growth.

And then, the final kicker is, they gloss over his entire abuse. You can only read about these shit in his profile, which most people don't because they don't Have Him or doesn't care to unlock it/read it online, and they jammed his entire backstory into a flaccid info-dump at the end of his character story quest. This man isn't Allowed to feel abused and neglected and show any reaction to it within the narrative of Fontaine itself, because if they actually Gave Weight to what happened to him, they'd have to confront THE FUCKING JUSTICE SYSTEM they had NO PLANS on criticising. I don't think they ever explicitly said the fucking Crime-Theatre nonsense was Bad either.

i'm cry laughing some people on twitter are now saying "izzy bashing" needs to be tagged in fics. how did these people ever survive watching this show where izzy is the CANON ANTAGONIST i'll never know

benefit of the doubt but i think most of them have gotten to this point gradually. when they first watched the show they were not attached to izzy the way they are now. i know for a lot of people it was blorbo at first sight with izzy but i've also seen izzy enjoyers say they didn't like him at first, and then fandom made them care about him.

like i'm pretty sure for a lot of ppl it started off with isolating themselves from ppl who made posts that they didnt like, like ppl who criticized ofmd for being based on two real people with direct connections to actual real-world slave trade (which is an incredibly valid thing to criticize abt ofmd).

another one that i think funneled a lot of fans towards being so delusionally attached to izzy was people pointing out or complaining about the disproportionate amount of fan content for izzy compared to prominent characters of color—which is a consistent issue in fandom no matter what the media, and is also a very easy one for people to be uncomfortable with whenever they see it get pointed out. people venting that "fans care too much abt this white man" often make fans who care abt that white man very defensive right off the bat, and then rather than engage with why they feel defensive or question if maybe their enjoyment of this character is fueled by implicit bias (which it might not be, to be clear! im not saying—and i have never said—that everyone who enjoyes izzy likes him for racist reasons), they stop listening to the conversation abt white favoritism and continue blorboposting as much as they want. it's incredibly easy for fans to brush off this convo as "just starting drama" and avoid the topic altogether because "fandom is for fun!" and they dont want to think abt difficult topics like racism and implicit bias, they just want to enjoy their blorbos in peace.

so they kept narrowing the takes they were seeing until they were in an echo chamber that kept moving more and more towards complete woobification of izzy hands. these people are now looking at the show entirely through izzy's pov, making posts abt how sad it is that none of the other characters are ever nice to him, how frustrating the show is from his perspective, how it feels to be deeply in love with someone who doesn't love you back. they've stared at gifs of con's micro-expressions and read angsty fanfiction and looked at endless izzy fanart and their entire ofmd fandom experience revolves around empathizing with this one character even tho the show itself continually makes him the butt of the joke.

at this point, telling these people to rewatch the show doesn't even matter. they've spent so much time over-analyzing every single one of izzy's scenes to the point where the emotional responses they get from these scenes are not the emotional responses anyone would have watching the show for the first time. they've warped the entire first season to fit their version of the show and are forgetting how often the show itself bashes izzy.

and the icing on the cake is the trolling. there's like, one or two people on here who go around sending anon hate and leaving nasty comments on instagram posts and harassing people on twitter for... like, i would say "for liking izzy" or even "for saying positive things about izzy" but like. i've gotten these messages, and the most sympathetic i've ever been to izzy was the post i made like "maybe he's mean bc he has chronic IBS. i'd actually understand him more if that were the case." so when i get these messages it's easier for me to just laugh them off bc it's so obviously just someone trying to make me upset, but people who do care about izzy (a lot of them being the same people who avoided engaging with the "why does fandom care so much abt white characters" convo) get these absolutely horrible messages about how they deserve to get hate crimed and they should kill themselves. and these fans who didn't want to even see vaguely negative posts abt izzy bc they just want to enjoy fandom in peace are now like "im targeted for just liking a character!"

but you just get each other. you have similar mindsets and find each other comfortable. so you grow up and into each other - and become best friends after a long while. he comes over a lot to yap while you study and while it looks one-sided - you often take care of and look after yuuji and make sure he's not carrying too much at once.

anyway . you have a really good relationship. you're not glued at the hip but it's like, you stick together so much people often ask where the other is when one of you is missing. you get older to around middle school and puberty starts to really . hit you know.

a lot of girls confess to yuuji in that time. it's normal. sure he's rowdy and loud but he's the kind of good guy you notice when you really talk to him. fundamentally good, and not crude and shallow like other boys your age. popular but not obviously. it's the first time in your relationship you are self conscious about being his best friend and just happening to be a girl

(what you don't know, because yuuji never bothered to ask - is that the girls he used to date broke up with him simply because he wouldn't shut up about you. everything he should've done with a girlfriend he did with you already. he even keeps pictures)

when you get into college and grow into adulthood, you and yuuji are still extremely close. you chose to stay home and so did he - so not much is very different. except now you're meeting all sorts of new people and having new relationships form.

you don't know how exactly it comes up. you're studying for an upcoming midterm, yuuji is talking about how he got turned out by the cute girl that he works with and he pauses and asks.

"you know, i know you study hard but you should have fun too," he says this laying in your bed like he owns it, turning his head to look at you where you're bent over your desk. "haven't you thought about getting a boyfriend now that you're in college?"

you are good at brushing this off. you've been doing it for years. you do not tell yuuji that you don't date guys even after you get asked out because you're in love. you just shrug and tell him straight.

"i already told you. im not going to think about dating until i'm finished with school and i've held my career for two years."

"but aren't you bored?" yuuji asks, sincere. he doesn't press you but he is being nosy. "i don't play around that much either but i don't know. a little is healthy. and you've always working hard. playing around with handsome guys might be fun."

"don't you get i dunno," he lays on his back. "sexually frustrated, though?"

you pause. you flinch. you've never talked about this before.
