Victor Hugo's opinion on depictions of Jean Valjean in fanart

So, in April 1862, 21 year old Julien Girard de Rialle published a  ���Critique of the Critiques” of Les Misérables his newspaper the Revue théâtrale, littéraire et artistique, along with the above image by up-and-coming artist (and former bookstore employee) Rodolphe Julian. Naturally, de Rialle sent the paper to Victor Hugo, who sent this letter in reply:

Your April edition is only arriving to me in June. Absence has its displeasures to which one must be resigned. Your article charmed me. Nothing but grace, wit, and verve! I thank those who have the goodness to be my enemies, their attacks are caresses because they bring me such defenses.   I shake your hand, Monsieur.  Victor Hugo P.S. Please congratulate on my behalf the author of the drawing, which is truly lovely and which couldn't be clearer. The bishop is sleeping soundly, the convict is hesitating profoundly. Perhaps the beard is too long. It's only a few days' growth. I make this observation because other painters have made the same small mistake.

So there you have it: temper your desire to give Valjean too long a beard.

started re-watching LM 2K with some friends who also make terrible life choices

I'll give John Malkovert this: he does seem disturbingly horny for the idea of inherent traits and inborn social hierarchy. Beeblevert didn't really seem to know what to do with his phrenology displays; Malkovert whispers to them lovingly at night and probably licks them. This guy feels about eugenics like Grantaire feels about Enjolras. This guy is messed up.

( ...filmmakers know that when they've got someone with lots of human skull measurements and phrenology and Types of Human displays, they're saying that character is into eugenics, right? I'm not saying it's a bad move, it can be very accurate and telling ,but like. They get what that's doing there, right? RIGHT???)

The dialogue...is bad.... it's so bad...

this timeline is a shambles. Fantine doesn't have Cosette until after Tholomyes is gone, and then apparently holds out for YEARS in Paris, since Cosette is if anything a little older than her book age when Fantine meets the Ts; meanwhile Valjean doesn't get out of prison until AFTER Fantine has moved to M-sur-M. Which of course means there's no factory for her to work at!

...but then after Valjean (very intentionally) steals from Petit Gervais, we cut to Fantine working in the factory. The Nettle Cloth factory . Which means Fantine was doing SOMETHING before Valjean showed up to Disrupt the industry with his Tech Breakthrough but like. What. If she was doing something else then why doesn't she go do that some more after she's fired? Because she very much doesn't, she goes right to attempting sex work...badly

like trying it with Javert first Badly

and then he threatens to arrest her but doesn't?? who is this man, what kind of Javert is he ffs . Letting a Poor go unarrested? Seriously this doesn't even scan with his characterization in this series

Instead he starts stalking Fantine and giving her Helpful Hints. He comes in right after she has a client?? and tells her to go to the circus??

She goes and finds the dentist and tries to get him to pull TEN of her teeth bc for no reason he's giving 4 francs a tooth instead of 20 for the fronts. The dentist is the only character in this show with sense and says NO THAT'S TOO MANY TEETH, and he just cuts her hair instead And listen we've got another Fantine with Mostly Straight Brown Hair , it's not even that long, and I'm sorry but there's NO WAY that's worth more than teeth, why do adaptations keep doing this

also why do they keep making Fantine so passive, so dependent on people telling her what to do? She makes bad choices sometimes--often even!-- but she Makes Decisions and fast, she goes all in without any pushing, that is a defining part of Fantine's character! but everything she does here gotta be because someone told her she Should

another one where Javert inexplicably goes to M sur M to see Cosette. Why? What possible reason for this?? he almost seems like he has a weird crush on Fantine rather than JVJ but that's. That's incoherent, for this character. even in this series!!

I've written so much and haven't even gotten to Valjean officiating a wedding for, apparently, a famous former sex worker in the town ? this is mentioned once and I don't think it'll ever be relevant again

1862 critics when they imagine les mis from Louis XVIII's pov:

imagining les mis from louis xviii's pov. really funny. napoleon is defeated & you are restored to the throne. fast forward four years & they tell you a successful businessman has come into public eye in montreuil-sur-mer so you have him appointed mayor. the guy refuses it. that same year you try to appoint a winner (?) of the industrial exhibition a chevalier of the legion of honor but he turns it down. it's the same guy. you have him appointed mayor again & he finally accepts. fast forward another four years. they tell you the same guy again confessed to being a former convict & a recidivist & has been sentenced to death. well okay you're a merciful king so you get out your pen or whatever & commute his sentence. less than a year later he's reported drowned & you're in your carriage in paris feeling sick & miserable & they point out to you a guy on the street in a horrible yellow coat. little do you know it's the same guy. you die before the rest of the book

Transmasculinity Throughout Time: Lou Alcott

Yes, you heard me. There is substantial evidence that the author of Little Women was in fact a transgender man! He actually didn’t go by the name that Little Women was published under, with family and friends he would go by Lou, Louy, or LM. His children called him “papa” and “father” and his father, Bronson Alcott, called him his son. He said in 1882, “I am more than half persuaded that I am a man’s soul, put by some freak of nature into a woman’s body.” As a child, he said in a journal, “I don’t care much for girls things. People think I’m wild and queer.” He would pass as a man at masked parties for fun, and delighted in people’s reactions. For his entire life, he expressed this identification as a man, and the character of Jo in Little Women was in part a self insert character based on this. So why don’t we hear about him as a trans man? Well, it’s just not convenient for most people to believe that a beloved book about girls becoming women was written by a man.

Did you know that the Yale Literary Magazine is the oldest student literary magazine in the US? It was started in 1836! So then it is no surprise that the December 1863 issue of the magazine makes reference to Les Miserables. The article begins with this appreciation of Victor Hugo:

Victor Hugo is a wonderful man. His ardent love of France, his efforts to maintain her constitutional liberties against her present usurpers, and his eleven years of exile, show the nobility and consistency of his character. Moreover, his ability as a writer, both in verse and prose, has won him an enviable fame as an author. Aside from all this, he possesses a heart overflowing with the milk of human kindness. [. . .] “Les Misérables,” coming from such an author, the essence of ten years thought, could not be a common book. Critics might call it “sensational,” or “French,” “less miserable than his other works,” but the “ people” were fascinated. There was something in the great and touching miseries revealed, and as much, perhaps, in the very title, which won its way to every heart weighed down with its own peculiar sorrow.

The author of the article declines to comment on the topic of the book, and proposes to muse on the thoughts evoked by its title. He says that everyone feels included in the class of miserable, but that most people simply are making themselves miserable (the tone is joking but that's the point).

The merchant makes himself miserable on the possibility of the loss of his richly freighted vessel at sea; and the manufacturer finds a similar employment in speculating on the decline of market prices.

But the best example of this is, apparently, men. Men who aren't married wish that they were and men who are married wish that they weren't and thus make themselves miserable.

Victor Hugo has given us Marius, for the one [who wants to get married], while our own observation finds multitudes of representatives of the other.

There are also the miseries experienced by the college freshmen:

He mistakes the sweep for the professor, the Sophomore for the Senior—horrible mistake—and treats them accordingly. He never opens his mouth, but to put his foot in it. His well-digested ideas and words fail him on rising to his feet in debate.

And let's not forget the miseries of the college "crusty man":

Talk under his window when he wishes to study and, ten chances to one, he throws water on you. Suspicious, resentful, and disagreeable, he makes a miserable fool of himself generally.

I haven't found nearly so much joking about Les Miserables in American papers as in French papers so even though this is kind of dumb, it's also interesting to me.

Regina ‘live-watches’ Last Man: Zenmou no Sousakan S01E06.

This time up, a hostage situation -- which seems straightforward at first.

This episode is prefaced by a content warning of the 'barricading situation' and ends with a reference to and blessing for the victims of a similar situation in real life.

[Sidenote: I find this approach interesting because events like this happening in an American drama get the episode pulled, especially if they happen very close to the airdate. I'd be interested to know if that is at all standard procedure in Japan.]

I will also point out that there are scenes of child endangerment.

Everyone else is having a good time at the Godo patriarch's birthday party but Godo certainly isn't.

Oh, he's remembering a past incident. Aww.

And, immediately we're dumped into the case of the week.

Ah hah, this conflict between Minami and Arai of the equivalent to SWAT here (I'm assuming) is like watching the pissing contest between Lieutenant Reed and Major Hayes on Enterprise.

Godo is very concerned about Minami, ostensibly so that Minami won't cause trouble, but there's a bit more there, methinks. More than what existed before.

Godo: *leaves* Minami: *trades himself for a hostage*

Godo specifically tells Minami not to do anything rash and Minami goes and does that immediately. *facepalm* Yes, that's why the warning. Gosh.

Listen.

Telling the person you trust to be your eyes you have that much trust in them is as much a burden as an act of faith. That said, I love the relationship between Minami and Agatsuma so much, guys, so so much.

Get him, Sakura. Yes, good.

All of the teamwork in this episode is splendid, conflicts and otherwise.

Is Minami okay? Well... of course he is but suspense!

Prime whump, y'all. Good stuff. I like actual injury a bit more than what this show is giving me, but threat of imminent danger/death does it for me quite well, too.

At least Arai and Minami reach consensus faster than Hayes and Reed. (Also, how dare Masha have so much chemistry with everyone he works with. How do he do it?)

Such a tense episode. I like how it kept me guessing as it was telling the story, but also gives enough clues that I'm just a step behind whatever it's doing. That is excellent narrative. Well done, writer.

And there's just enough pause amidst the action to comment on the perpetrator's motivation. Minami's emotional intelligence is so refreshing to see.

Aw, this final scene with Godo senior is lovely. Adorable. Not overly sentimental, just the right touch of sweet.

My heart breaks.

Okay, so I know the angst of the revelation that's coming with Godo discovering that Minami has kept his true reason for coming to Japan away from him will probably not be as much as is being telegraphed before it's worked out. At least, that's my expectation. The focus of these stories isn't to wallow, but to just have enough conflict that the audience stays invested.

It's a good thing that we're being given the viewpoints of those around Godo before he finds out, since that both ratchets up the investiture and takes sting out of the eventual fallout. At least, that is, from Godo and his own personal entanglement with Minami. You see, I have the sense that when Godo discovers that his entire family kept this from him, he'll be more angry with them, and they stand a better chance of being able to mollify him, as well.

That doesn't mean that it's going to be any easier to watch.

Speculation: I think Minami has always intended to get close to Godo, perhaps to use him as is speculated by Izumi at the end of this episode, but not with ill intention.

Minami is, without a doubt, a naturally charming person, but a lot of what he was doing with Godo at the beginning was aggressively charming, even obnoxious. It's evened out over the course of the six episodes as he's gotten to know Godo.

Yes, he's been gently prying information out of Godo about his father, but none of it seems to come from a place of malice. Additionally, the information Minami is seeking has changed a bit, as when he attempted to discover Godo's favorite food -- that has nothing to do with what he wants to know. That comes from a personal interest and you can see how it affected Minami when Godo gave his answer. There was a shift in his perception, an understanding of Godo's internal viewpoint.

It's clear to me that he's very aware that what he's doing is disingenuous, because he was the one that offered to Godo complete usage of his own skills, from the very start. It's a way of dealing with the dishonesty of it, a silent quid pro quo.

I also think Minami came to the conclusion at that point of that shift in understanding to continue to keep his intentions secret from Godo, conducting this investigation on the sly in the hopes that his suspicions are not correct; that Godo's father will be absolved of his actions. He's doing it secretly because he doesn't know what he'll find. It could go either way, and in that case, he's the only one that wants to be hurt by it.

Perhaps his motivation in being friends -- genuine friends -- is to indicate that he's come to peace about what happened to his parents. That he understands Godo is himself innocent of his father's crimes.

And, if Minami has the character I think he does, he's just waiting to tell all of this to Godo himself. And he's ready for whatever happens then.

God, I hope.

This is still and adult show and no matter who may watch it (I'm in highschool, not even necessarily what some people may consider a young adult), we must treat it with nuance and care as well

PSA to everyone in this fandom before YJ goes on Netflix, season 3 comes out, and we inevitably gain some new people: LET PEOPLE ENJOY THIS SHOW. Let people be shippers, deer Lottie and raccoon Nat people, shitposters, Travis or Misty haters or lovers, deep scholarly analyzers, fanfic and smut writers, gif makers, ETC. People are allowed to have any opinion they want about this show as long as it’s not harmful to other people. If you don’t like it literally all you have to do is ignore it. We don’t all have to agree on everything, that’s what makes it fun. It’s good to have different perspectives, just be nice to each other.
