The original korean names of weak hero honestly are better than the English ones . By better I meant their names have certain meanings that matches their traits . Such a bakejin Na . Baekjin means golden and bright . Also favoured by dragon ( you will see later he has a dragon tattoo on his back ,sorry if it was a spoiler for you . I read the raws first so ) . Besides the story ,culture and plot everything is set in korea , so having western names sounds really odd . Not only that the translations are not accurate as the korean. Which is why we sometimes miss some inside jokes .

oh yeah that suits him a lot more. it's sort of imposing and intimidating sounding compared to his 'adapted' name (also he sure likes the colour gold)

it sucks that every name in weak hero was probably chosen by seopass to reflect their personality/arc and we're not getting any of it. i mean at least they translated sieun to gray but it's exactly as you said english sounding names in korean setting are just a bit....weird

could you tell me more about their original names (at least of the main group)? also always wanted to know what nickname does ben have in the korean? i'm guessing it's not big ben that wouldn't make much sense

btw i WISH i could read raws but my korean isn't nearly good enough for that

As of Chapter 177 or the week of March 7th

can I just say? Yikes.

tw: abuse, blood, trauma, ptsd, ...

Before, (^) I mentioned some mysterious, long-ago event that we're not worried about today.

Well today is the day we are worried.

I'll give a run-down of what we know for a fact, my take on it, and what I think this means moving forward

He is the child of an abusive relationship

Yikes okay there it is

We know whoever the man in the situation we were given is knife-wieldingly violent against Donald's mother

His mother? you say

You won't say the man is his father, but will say that's his mother?

As much as it pains me to say this...

He looks like his mother

Same skin

Same hair

Same profile

He looks so much like his mother in just one poorly-lit panel it hurts

So parents are as they are

I want to take a look at what this says about everybody

Side note: There is no situation where I can spin this man into a good person. The fact remains that he's taking a knife to her, and so there is definitely a significant degree of abuse here

I could go way in depth about the cycle of abuse, but I don't feel that's necessary here, so sparknotes:

The abuser may lash out in a high-tension situation (like an argument)

and this outburst is what we see in the brief panel

After an outburst, the peace returns

The abuser might apologize for the outburst.

Say it will never happen again.

Make grand gestures for forgiveness.

Whatever it may be -_-

In the last stage, there is an important distinction.

A more manipulative abuser will use this stage to remind their victim why they are still together, luring them with promises of a healthy or 'good' relationship.

They may gaslight their victim to place blame of the outburst on them as well.

An abuser with less manipulative tendencies will probably do less of this, or not even apologize at all, often relying on their victim's private hope for a better relationship.

This kind of victim has more dependency on their abuser, as they do not require manipulation from their abuser to stay.

(THIS DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE WEAKER. dependency has many contributing factors)

So we know he's nuts, but how bad is it?

We're wondering how hair-trigger the knife-inclusive rage is

Buuuuut how manipulative he is in his abuse affects how we see the mother, and then how we see Donald. so

if it's as bad as it gets, no manipulation needed- and instinct tells me that is what we have here- their relationship is a constant state of abuse.

Donald's mother is then completely dependent on her abuser

She is trapped

here we move from fact to headcanon

Donald probably resents his mother for her weakness in staying with his father

He absolutely feels rage against his father for the abuse though

which means he still cares deeply for his mother

The next thing we know after the fight is Donald on the street

I think in the same clothes, I think...

So it is possible that his mother died that night

As always, when we know more I will pick this back up.

Facts first Donald is going to a hospital

maaaaaaybe for a physical injury but I doubt it

I'm pretty sure its for the medication mentioned

you don't go to a hospital for a regular prescription

at least not where I'm studying

MEDICATION oh my gosh

Kingsley says something to the effect of

"oh no I hope he doesn't get addicted"

which

first off

is a New Thing

You don't worry about addiction to medication a person has been taking for years no problem

you feel? Great. Moving on.

sometimes the difference between recovery and suicide is a simple

"hey you seem a little down today- want to talk about it?"

do NOT let the trauma be the elephant in the room

back to Donald's specific situation

I would never have considered his trauma to cause a physical weakness

because it really hasn't been evident in him

either the weakness from the trauma occuring before we meet him

or the change in him if it occurred during the series

(No one's that icy, someone would notice)

BUT

Kingsley is worried about addiction

which is WILDLY more prevalent among pain medications

(prescribed for serious short term pain and

in rare cases

severe long term pain)

ADDICTION WOULD BE A SERIOUS AND VALID CONCERN

like, my sweet little old grandma got addicted to pain meds after a surgery its not an 'it happens to other people' thing

but at this point there's no real evidence for a physical impairment

so that means that the medication is likely mood stabilizers

for a mental trauma

oh boy

y'know all those 'scarred for life' jokes?

Yeah...

this is where they come from

We are now begging the question:

what has Donald seen/done/been a victim of

that has scarred him this deeply?

There's more I could say but it's less concrete and I think this is a good point to leave it at. I'll reblog with more analysis if we get more information.

Even today he still looks back and finds it ridiculous, but when the ins and outs of managing people in the Union (similarly without equation or formula) escapes him, he'll murmur "ask the stars" to himself and scoff.

So strange a place that reverberates with age but is reborn every second to the new faces flooding in and out of its arteries.

Such a wonder was lost on him as a child.

He really did used to hate the subways with their crowded noise and deafening cage of legs all around his too-short frame.

An ever changing and shifting labyrinth that was so incessantly dirty. He could never ignore the impulse to scrub himself down after traveling through them.

Walled away from miles of rock and city above him, the filth of cigarette smoke and street water and eyes that lingered too long.

All churned through the cloying air by the steel of the rails that flew into the air as dust after the screeching of a new train sent it drifting slowly, malevolently, into his lungs.

But these things don't seem to bother him anymore. Life had changed him to be different now.

He had the stain of blood and immorality inked onto his hands.

He was dirty now. Taller too.

And the subways simply called to him now. The strange, thrumming, incomprehensible maze that never slept.

Just like him. Sprite- What's the most spontaneous thing you've ever done?

To be honest, that time he was bored and curious and bought every available stock in some speck-of-dust small business.

Economy, babeyyy

No its really as crackhead as he gets, but if the business goes under like probability says it will, he will be losing a good chunk of money for the Union.

"oops" probably won't suffice then.

On the flip side, if they do well, he has a monopoly on the lucrative and dangerous industry of goat-powered lawn care in Croatia.
