Balaur Arms German Kriegmesser Reveal | Kult of Athena
Order this blade HERE!
An iconic sword of the principalities of the Holy Roman Empire and of central Europe in the late Medieval period, the Kriegsmesser brings the Messer into its largest and most destructive form. Its large, saber-like blade coupled with a two-handed grip for power and leverage creates a sword with superb cutting and slashing ability. Whatever the source of the #messer and its smaller and humbler forms, a Kriegsmesser such as the one here with its elevated stylization was a weapon for a professional warrior, mercenary or noble.
In cooperation with famed swordmaker #LKChen, the #BalaurArms Kriegsmesser manages to recreate this powerful, large #sword in a form that is particularly agile and swift for its size. Its blade features a high degree of distal taper with a thick and strong base which thins considerably toward the main striking portion of the sword to create a blade that will bite into and pass through a target with minimized drag and resistance. The keenly sharp blade is ready for powerful cutting right out of the box; the blade is well-tempered high carbon spring steel with a hardness of 54-55 HRc. The guard and pommel are stainless steel and the grip has two halves of smooth-polished rosewood which are solidly copper riveted to the thick tang of the blade for a tough construction. For heightened durability, the blade tang is peened over the pommel. The nagel gives excellent protection to the knuckle and is solidly fitted to the guard; its base pin goes straight through the guard and is peened on the reverse to ensure that it will not shear off in an impact.
This #Kriegsmesser is paired with a durable scabbard of wood which features a finely cast locket and chape of stainless steel. The wood is bound in leather and etched with late #Medieval scrollwork on a single side to complete the sword.

I am fascinated with this sword, for the length and heft of the blade, it still maneuvers quite easily. It's also really cool to wield the same sword as the famed 108 Heroes of the Song Dynasty, to cut, chop and slash like Wu Song the Pilgrim...

LK Chen – White Serpent Ming Jian
The White Serpent Ming Jian is a 1:1 replica of one of the most exquisite Ming Jian in a private collection and represents the apex of the Chinese Jian in both form and function. During the Ming Dynasty, nobility, high ranking ministers and members of the court preferred the agile and balanced Jian as their chosen weapon of self defense and a symbol of status. This Chinese Jian features a beautiful blade designed for cutting and thrusting with equal prowess and the blade is forged from folded 1060 and T9 high carbon steel. The steel is well tempered and the melding of these two quality steels gives the blade beautiful, ripple-like patterning throughout which is made visible and prominent with a high quality blade polish. Folding steel in this manner to combine the properties of two steels into a single blade was a well understood art in China and common to their high quality swords.
The twin edges of the blade run almost parallel to each other with subtle tapering and end in a almond shaped tip. The sword has a classic Ming guard and Lingzhi hilt design which feature highly detailed and well cast metal come together to project a sense of lightness, flowing balance and rich symbolism. These hilt components are cast from brass and this grip is smoothly polished wood with brass highlighting. The sword is matched with a equally beautiful scabbard of wood with intricate brass detailing and ivory-hue damask.

LK Chen – Twin Peaks Liao Dao
The Twin Peaks Liao Dao is a 1:1 recreation of an surviving 1000 year old double handed Liao Dao of the Liao Dynasty (916 – 1125). This unique sword pairs a large and powerfully curved blade which delivers impressive and decisive slicing and chopping power; the thick spine of the blade not only gives it excellent durability, but use that spinal mass to power it through a cut. A look at the wedge-shaped cross section of the blade gives its wide profile a well angled slope that terminates into thin edge that bites into and through a target for a clean separation. A long grip ensures that there is plenty of leverage for wielding this sword effectively.
With its long curved upper edge, distinctive twin peaks spine, multi loop hand guard and huge gourd shape plate pommel, Twin Peaks Liao Dao is unique in it’s design. Menacing, full of untamed energy and yet at the same time, beautiful, these are the vibes one can feel in the presence of this exquisite Liao Dao. The blade is forged from well-tempered high carbon Manganese alloy spring steel (GB 60Si2MnA); a steel with properties similar to 5160 spring steel and a tempered hardness of 56-58 HRc . The guard, pommel and guard collar are forged from iron and the grip is polished wood. The tang runs the full length of the grip and is dual-pinned for a solid construction. LK Chen – Wo Yao Dao
The Wo Yao Dao from LK Chen is an excellent recreation of Ming and early Qing Dynasty sabers which had blade shapes that were greatly influenced by the Japanese Katana. The blade has the thick spine, rigid body and wedge-shaped cross section of the katana and this creates a quickm single-handed saber with the ability to cut strongly, deeply and decisively. The blade is GB 60Si2MnA High Carbon Manganese Spring Steel which is a durable and tough steel that can flex and return true and this makes it an excellent steel for a sword blade.
The crossguard and pommel components are antiqued steel and the wooden grip is bound in knotted suede cord and finished with a wrist lanyard. The sword is paired with a wooden scabbard which is tightly wrapped in high quality synthetic black leather and completed with fittings of matching antiqued steel.
The Chinese Wo Yao Dao (Japanese style waist saber) is a single handed saber with a slender profile and an accelerated curve towards the tip which is typical for Ming to early Qing sabers. It has a ridged cross-section, much in the style of Japanese swords but without the kissaki that is so characteristic for Japanese work. Since the Song Dynasty, the quality of Japanese swords was well regarded in China and the Ming government set up import trade agreement with Japanese feudal lords to produce quality swords.  Between the 115 years from 1432 to 1547,  there were 11 official sword import contracts and many unaccountable smuggling of Japanese swords via Macao.  The number of Japanese swords imported numbered over 200,000.  These Japanese swords were often made to Chinese specifications to adapt to single handed use and the imported swords are of various qualities ranging from exquisite blades for officials to much humbler and lower quality swords intended for rank and file soldiery.
With the abundance of Japanese imports as inspiration in China, Many Chinese swordmakers crafted swords that melded Japanese influence and advanced Chinese forging techniques and the results were often blades with equivalent quality of the imports with the added benefits of local repair and restoration if needed. This Wo Yao Dao is closely based on an antique Late Ming Dynasty Yao Dao in the fame Mandarin Mansion Collection.
