Yuan Dynasty 1271-1368 was a time when China was a part of the bigger Mongolian Empire spanning from the eastern coast of China all the way to part of Europe today. This is a time of international travel via land and sea, the time when the Italian traveler Marco Polio visited China and years later wrote about his adventures. This a time when people from Eurasia and Arabic countries come to live, work and settle in China and their influence can be seen in this sword design dating to the time of the Yuan. The Mongolian saber has the characteristics of Eurasian Steppes curved saber and was a milestone in Chinese weaponry where curved swords with characteristically saber like blades were introduced to the Chinese. The sword was ideal for quick strikes from mounted cavalrymen and well capable of inflicting deep cuts and slashes from horseback.

Balaur Arms - Irish Gallowglass Greatsword - Kult of Athena

Description
The Gallowglass were the most sought after warriors of the Irish clans who characteristically fought dismounted in long coats of mail and with large and powerful greatswords and long-hafted biting axes. They were depended upon to form a hard and unshakable core to a 13th-16th century Clan army and could be counted upon to tenaciously hold a line or lead a vicious charge. The Gallowglass hailed from far northwest clans of Irish who had intermarried extensively with Scottish and Norse settlers and were thus called the Gall Gaeil (the foreign Gaels, the “Gallowglass”). It is from their Norse and Scot backgrounds that the Gallowglass clans inherited their style of fighting and mastery of heavy armaments and some cunning Irish chiefs perceived their martial potential and gave them land to settle upon in return for promises of military service. Not only an asset to the Gaelic Chiefs army, these warriors could be relied upon by an Irish chieftain for personal loyalty and he would often make his bodyguard, retinue or warband from these “foreign Gaels” who could be depended upon to not be involved in the complex familial plots and internecine intrigues of the Clan and its succession. Many Gallowglass would also offer their services (often seasonally) as mercenaries who would serve Irish chiefs who could afford their worthy price.
The Balaur Arms Gallowglass Greatsword bears the large and wide cleaving blade typical of their type and it is forged from GB 60Si2MnA High Carbon Manganese Spring Steel (a steel with properties similar to 5160) which has been tempered to an 54-55 HRc hardness. The wide lenticular blade is optimized for brutally slicing into and through a target with both power and velocity for fierce blows, especially when in the hands of a strong or imposingly large warrior. Despite its substantial size, the sword is surprisingly quick and easy to wield thanks to its notable distal taper and long grip affording the user great leverage to deliver powerful sweeping blows. The wide, spatulate tipped blade is very similar to styles seen in the Scottish two-handed Claymore and like the Claymore, the blades for the Gallowglass greatswords were imported from abroad by wealthy clan chiefs and nobles in places like Solingen and then hilted in the local Irish style by local cutlers and used to outfit personal retinues or warbands.
The stainless steel hilt is in the characteristic and unique Gaelic style with spatulate ends of the crossguard forming a rudimentary S-curve crossguard. These spatulate ends are a stylized derivative of some Irish swords which were worked into the shape of cupped hands. The pommel is in the open ring style pommel unique to the Irish and unlike most examples on the market has a central outer groove. The blade is stoutly anchored onto the pommel with a separate pommel cap and the sword was finished with a grip of two halves of wood which were tightly bound in leather.
The sword has its own well-crafted scabbard of wood which is wrapped in tightly stitched brown leather and capped with a steel chape. An etched Celtic Cross on the mouth of the scabbard gives it a finishing flourish of Irish character.

Lancelot Sword – Supreme-Cutter™ Compact with Standard Factory Edge
The Supreme-Cutter™ Classic from Lancelot is the result of his journey to create an optimized fighting sword, a blade that uses his 30 years of swordsmanship experience to full effect to create an ideal sword that balances reach, power, speed and practicality, a sword that is optimized for cleanly and repeatedly slicing tatami, thick rolls of newspaper and other targets. Each sword gets closely inspected by Lancelot himself to ensure that they meet his approval for a sword deserving of the Supreme Cutter title. The Compact Edition is specialized in combat in low height and narrow areas, such as doorway. It excels in defending behind the door, or in bashing through a doorway during an assault. It is also easier to carry around and is quicker to unsheath due to the shorter blade length. In addition, it’s also the lightest and fastest among the three, which allow single handed use more often, where the offhand is holding ranged weapons or something else to help one to defend oneself. You can read more of his design philosophy farther below.
The sword has a rigid and robust blade forged from well tempered GB 60Si2MnA High Carbon Manganese Spring Steel with a final tempered hardness of 50-55 HRc and sharpened to a fine and keen cutting edge and polished to beautiful reflective mirror finish.. The disk guard and pommel are of stainless steel with a sandblasted finish contrasted with a mirror polished rim. The wooden grip is tightly bound in blackened hand-wrapped cord. The sword is paired with a wooden scabbard which is tightly bound in faux black rayskin and is completed with a blackened brass locket and chape fittings. The scabbard is specially designed to ensure that sheathing / unsheathing the sword will not dull the blade edge. A cloth sword bag and sword presentation box are included.
Please Note: The standard factory edge merely means that the sword is not personally sharpened by Lancelot, but it is inspected by him. The edge from the factory bladesmiths is still very sharp and quite capable of efficient cutting.
The concept of the Supreme-Cutter™ – an optimized fighting sword
Why cutting is so important?
According to medieval German longsword swordsmanship, there were three sword strikes: cut, thrust, and slice. When a cut missed, it could become a thrust. When a thrust missed, it could become a slice.
However, if we consider “stopping power”, both slicing and thrusting would not stop a frenzied opponent right away. There are many historical records depicting duels that ended with mutual kills, with both parties inflicting the opponent with plenty thrusting wounds and together bled to death.
George Silver, the 16th century British sword master, criticized Italian rapier swordsmanship for causing the death of many brave young Englishmen in duels. It was partly because thrusting wounds, while they would eventually kill, were unable to stop the opponent right away and protect oneself.
The slicing attack was also not enough to stop a drugged opponent. There is video footage of villagers defending their home against gangsters, while the latter wielded glaives. The villagers were wounded several times in the fight. Hamstring and thumb were cut, but the brave villagers fought on. Also, there is footage of a modern European swordsmanship group which practiced with sharp sword sparring, and one of the participants was cut at the elbow, forming a gaping bleeding wound, yet the fencer did not even acknowledge the hit. It was his partner who pointed it out so they could stop the practice and tend the bleeding wound.
As a result, the only reliable way to stop the opponent in their tracks, was a physical removal of the opponent’s appendage. This works on drugged, frenzied, zealous, or even undead opponents like zombies. Moreover, it was also the only way that one can threaten multiple opponents, cutting through the first target and still capable of threatening the next one.
So, it was very important to have a design that can facilitate supremecutting power that would not have the blade getting stuck in the target and let the user become defenseless.
For my 23 years of test cutting, I have used swords from various cultures and taken notes on all the factors that would contribute to good cutting power. Yet, it was only recently, with the use of high FPS camera, that allowed me to pinpoint the problem of blades losing penetrating power during a cut, and later develop a solution to mitigate it.
In the end, “Supreme Cutter” is designed as the answer to maximize cutting power and minimize the probability of the blade getting stuck in the targets.

LK Chen – Persian Shamshir
Swift in the hand and a ferocious cutter, the legendary Persian Shamshir is now made available by LK Chen in a form eminently practical and suitable for routine and regular cutting practice and demonstration and takes its inspiration from a 19th century historic original which is now housed with the collection of the New York MET Museum and is a famous example bequeathed by George C. Stone in 1935. The sharpened blade is crafted from well tempered GB 60Si2MnA High Carbon Manganese Spring Steel and it is securely pinned and mounted into a hilt with steel fittings and a smoothly polished wooden grip. The long tang is pinned directly to the grip halves for a secure mounting and melding of blade and hilt furniture. The sword is matched with a wood core scabbard which is bound in black leather and completed with fittings of steel and stainless steel.
Although “Shamshir” in Persian culture became a byword for swords in general, the name originally meant “curved like a lion’s claw” – a self evident reference to its blade shape and the vicious “bite” of its slash. The sharp curve of the blade slices deeply into and through the target as the sword blade “pivots” around its impact point as the cutting arm goes through its plane of movement. Persian swords before the 9th century were originally straight-bladed, but after influence from both the Seljuk Turks and the Mongols the Shamshir took on its familiar form in Persia. Although optimized for cutting, particularly from atop a swift and light-footed horse, the Shamshir is also capable of powerful thrusts. Although the angle from which a thrust can be executed is not as straightforward as a straight sword, the sharp curvature of the blade allows for a skilled swordsman to strike home that thrust from unpredictable angles which can be difficult to anticipate or defend from.

🗡️The classic Italian Longsword from Balaur Arms returns with a twist🗡️
We asked swordmaker and martial artist LK Chen to not simply reproduce the original model, but to further optimize it to create a performance longsword. In addition to a host of material and construction improvements, LK Chen was able to achieve outstanding balance and performance characteristics with the use of substantial distal taper and faithfully executed hollow-ground blade. In the hand the sword is a natural extension of the arm and deft enough to be used with a single hand if necessary, but it truly comes into its own when wielded in two hands. A quick striker with a fast recovery, this is a sword that can keep pace with the speed of your mind in the duel.
