Song Review: Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers - “Living in the Sunshine” (Live, June 30, 2023)

Though it was recorded in the previous century, “Living in the Sunshine” didn’t get its onstage debut until 2023.

That’s because Bruce Hornsby only recently unearthed the Spirit Trail-era track. And now that he and the Noisemakers are touring to support the forthcoming (Oct. 27) anniversary reissue of the LP, it makes sense to play it.

Hornsby’s just released what looks to be soundcheck performance, recorded June 30 in Maine. Like the previously released studio version, it sounds strikingly similar to “Harbor Lights,” though this one is a bit stilted, as the song is new to the Noisemakers and there was no audience to egg them on.

Sound Bites is off to see Hornsby play a free gig tonight. If “Living in the Sunshine” shows up in the set, that’ll be OK by him. “Harbor Lights” would be even better.

i think one of my favorite things about aftg is how it so subtly shows such a deep level of affection through languages. like kevin learning french for jean even though it is a dangerous thing to do at the nest and neil and andrew learning a new language together post tkm and one of the first things jeremy asks jean being to teach him french. i want to know who you are in your mother language, i want to speak to you in a language that no one but us understands, i want to understand the language that you dream in

there's so many things in tsc that just come at you all at once, so it's hard to focus on just one thing to break down, but the most glaring thing that stood out to me is how hard it is to really put someone back together. especially someone so shattered that it's nigh impossible to glue them back and pray they don't crumble under your ministrations.

if jean is neil's foil, then jeremy is andrew's direct antithesis. whereas andrew is a steady bedrock because he's been broken too many times to know how to weather the storm, jeremy is too soft hands and an even softer soul. he cares and cares and cares. so empathetic and so gentle it almost breaks your heart. you pray for the impossibility that jeremy can survive knowing the truth because if he doesn't, then what hope does jean have? so you pray he can be steady too. that he can weather the storm as well. that he will not break when knowing that just under the surface lies shark-infested waters.

but then you remember the beginning. "even knowing everything could go completely sideways, you'd make that choice every time"

in every other universe, jean has not survived. but in every other universe, he did not have the trojans.

Song Review: Bruce Hornsby - “Living in the Sunshine”

Bruce Hornsby says he didn’t release “Living in the Sunshine” back in the late-1990s because the album he was working on at the time was blown off course by “a record executive.”

And that is probably true. But another good reason would’ve been that the song sounds an awful lot like the then-relatively new “Harbor Lights,” the title track from Hornsby’s stellar 1993 album.

With all the years having passed, the time is right for “Living in the Sunshine,” which is one of four “newly rediscovered” tracks that will appear on the 25th-anniversary edition of Spirit Trail, due Oct. 27.

“Sunshine” might be a redux. But it’s a quality redux. And given Hornsby’s only misdemeanor as a musician is a propensity for repeating himself on occasion, that’s OK - particularly coming 30 years after the fact.
