Northern lights will be visible in Michigan due to a Strong Solar Storm.
Tumblr media
Michigan residents are in for a celestial treat this weekend as a severe solar storm is set to make the northern lights visible across the state, not just in the usual northern regions. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued a severe geomagnetic storm watch on Thursday, marking the first time since 2005 that the agency has put out a G4 alert.

What would Machete think of winter ? Would he dislike snow ? I wonder.
I see him staying inside warming up while watching the snow fall, not really liking going outside. Idk.
He wouldn't deal well with winter. I don't think Vasco would be a fan either, they're both short coated dogs that are used to the comparatively warm Mediterranean climate.
I guess there would be an element of novelty to it at first, and maybe even Machete would find the snowy lanscapes pretty. But he's already having issues with thermoregulation in the canon setting (mostly due to anemia and low body weight. He tends to have cold hands and feet), adding in freezing weather would drain all life out of him very fast. He'd be taking even more hot baths than usual and spending as much time as possible near fireplaces.

Aurora Borealis May 10 2024
Last night, something truly magical unfolded right from my backyard. As I gazed northward, the night sky transformed into a breathtaking canvas of vibrant colors. Thanks to a series of potent solar storms, the Northern Lights were visible much farther south than usual, and I was lucky enough to capture this stunning phenomenon.
The colors were extraordinary. Swirls of green and purple danced across the starlit sky, a display supercharged by recent solar activity. This year, the sun is at a solar maximum, brimming with sunspots that lead to coronal mass ejections (CMEs). These CMEs have been hurling charged particles towards Earth, enhancing the auroras and making them visible across vast regions—including here in Ontario.
The NOAA had issued a G4 geomagnetic storm watch, indicating strong auroras driven by the second-strongest level of solar storm. Although these events can affect power grids and communication networks, last night’s event was purely a visual treat with no reported disruptions.
Witnessing this natural wonder was a reminder of the beauty and mystery of our cosmos. For those who missed it, keep your eyes on the sky; the current solar cycle promises more such displays.

How cool is it that so many people across both hemispheres got to witness something usually reserved for a much smaller area all because the sun is throwing a huge tantrum right now. Just throwing out huuuge amounts of energy and our planet is like cool lets make pretty colours in the sky with that. Thats called turning a negative into a positive on a celestial scale 😌. We should be more like Earth lmao

I love you winter!
I love you, first snowfall of the season. I love you, powdery snow and frozen grass in the mornings. I love you, pink and purple sunsets. I love you, heavy snowfall. I love you, waking up in the morning to find a thick blanket of untouched white snow. I love you, skiing trips through the woods. I love you, hot berry juice. I love you, making running steps through the untouched snow to see how far you can leap. I love you, frost and snow in the tree branches making everything look glistening and perfect. I love you, grey cloudy days when everything looks monochrome except for the red trunks of the pines. I love you, downhill skiing. I love you, trying out new routes and tricks while downhill skiing and getting out of my comfort zone! I love you, hot chocolate and whipped cream. I love you, great tits and magpies flying about looking for food. I love you, clear days when the sky is blue and you remember how beautiful it really is. I love you, heavy snowfall illuminated by the street lamps at night. I love you, walking on the sea ice and lake ice and accessing places I never could before. I love you, glögi. I love you, snowflakes and inspecting your patterns. I love you, steaming hot saunas. I love you, ice swimming, even though you also frighten me! I love you, fairy lights in the trees. I love you, wind-carved waves and shapes in the snow. I love you, blue hour. I love you, warm blankets. I love you, tiny black streams still staying unfrozen and moving. I love you, icicles and other beautiful ice formations. I love you, crown snow-load and thick snow covering the trees. I love you, northern lights. I love you, fireplaces. I love you, waking up in the middle of the night in your warm bed, finding the house completely quiet as you walk through the hall, and upon looking out the window, all you can see is the calm snow slowly making its way to the ground, illuminated by the colourful fairy lights and the orange street lights. And you get this magical feeling inside of you, that you’re so warm, and calm, and perfectly safe and sound in this very moment. And you feel like you could stand there forever and just… take it all in.
I love you winter!

Aurora Borealis: May 10th 2024
This was my first time ever seeing the northern lights!!! I never thought it would be right above my head! I live pretty far south from the usual auroral zone so having this treat was surely a once in a lifetime thing for me! These pictures I took had a lot of exposure used cause with the naked eye you could barely see much, however you could make out the different hues in the sky especially when the pinks and purples were more present. All in all, this is yet another thing ticked off my bucket list :D

From My Backyard: Aurora Borealis May 10 2024
Last night was one of those rare evenings when the universe decides to put on a grand show, and I was lucky enough to have a front-row seat right in my backyard. Facing north, the night sky began to illuminate with the northern lights, an event magnified by a series of intense solar storms that brought these beautiful lights much farther south than usual.
Anticipation had built up as I had been reading about the expected solar activity and its potential to display the aurora borealis vividly this far south. The weather forecast had predicted partly cloudy skies, which had me worried that I might miss the spectacle. But as darkness settled, the clouds were not as thick as feared, and in fact, they added a dramatic touch to the overall visual experience.
In person, the aurora displayed faint greens and a hint of pink. However, it was through the lens of my camera that the colors truly came to life—a vibrant display of greens and purples that painted the night sky in a way that seemed almost surreal. The camera's sensor managed to capture the intensity of the aurora's colors far better than the naked eye could see, resulting in photographs that felt as magical as the experience itself.
To the south of our village, the sky was heavily overcast, and I felt incredibly fortunate that the cloud cover there didn’t extend to obscure my view. It seemed like a small miracle that the weather cooperated just enough to allow a clear glimpse of the aurora through patches of drifting clouds. This bit of serendipity made the experience even more special, knowing how close I came to missing out.
This event serves as a powerful reminder of the dynamic and beautiful interactions between Earth and the sun. NOAA had issued a G4 geomagnetic storm watch due to the coronal mass ejections hitting our planet, indicating that we could expect significant solar displays. While these geomagnetic storms can disrupt technology and power grids, they also create one of the most stunning natural phenomena one can witness.
Capturing this event from my backyard, where the universe felt both immense and intimately close, was a profound reminder of the wonders above us. The night was a perfect alignment of celestial activity, weather cooperation, and personal readiness, culminating in a deeply fulfilling experience of nature’s artistry. For those who appreciate the night sky, these moments remind us to keep looking up—the stars and the skies have endless stories to tell, and last night was a chapter I’ll never forget.
