After a little over one month in a sectioned off area of their bay pen, Little Grey and Little White of the Beluga Whale Sanctuary are back in their indoor pool... again. This is the second time the sanctuary has been forced to transfer the pair back into their "landside care facility" because Little Grey failed to acclimate to the natural environment of the sea pen. Her food intake declined dramatically, prompting the move, and the vet team determined that she had developed stomach ulcers during her time outdoors.

Despite being an anti-captivity organization, the BWS does everything by the book. They have attempted to gradually introduce the whales to their outdoor habitat, giving them many months indoors (after the initial transfer from the aquarium in China directly to the bay pen went poorly) before moving them to outside "sea care pools," a small area of the much larger bay pen, for acclimation. They have legitimate cetacean care experts on their team and have continuously put the welfare of their animals over the demands of their parent organization and supporters, many of whom expected a smooth, Free Willy-esque transition to "the wild."

However, the long-term feasibility of the project is coming into doubt. Little Grey has proven numerous times that she cannot tolerate the sea pen and does much better in a "tank." Now, I can't help but wonder how many more times the sanctuary will attempt to move her outdoors before they determine she's had enough. Should it come to that, they will find themselves in an incredibly precarious situation... keep her (and Little White, her only companion) permanently indoors in the small yet adequate pool habitat, or surrender her to an accredited aquarium that houses belugas. Either decision will undoubtedly infuriate many of their supporters, as a quick perusal of the comments on their social media posts indicates that a good majority of them simply refuse to understand the situation.

I applaud the BWS for their honesty, and wish them the best in determing their next course of action... even if it is one that flies in the face of what they represent. If anything, I hope this serves as a lesson to the animal rights crowd that sea pens are not the magical solution to cetacean captivity, and that in many cases the animals are far more comfortable in the manmade habitats where they've spent most or all of their lives.

i was at a restaurant last week, watching the political ads on the TV between sports games. one from the trump campaign ended with the slogan “kamala is for they/them. trump is for you”. it was vilely clever - and it made a clear statement about who was the enemy, the other, the unwelcome, in trump’s great america. i thought about how the right had gone all-in on transphobia this election season, and i hoped it was a gamble that would cost them.

this week has been a gut punch, and i’ve been feeling a lot of things - rage, fear, grief, and subspecies of those emotions. what i kept coming back to, though, as i digested these feelings, were the people i love. my queer friends. the trans kids in my community. the people who, already, are losing their rights to bodily autonomy, state-by-state. the way that i’ve had to start looking at our country as a fucked up patchwork of safe and not-safe. the way that access to medical care, increasingly, changes depending on which side of an arbitrary border you’re on. i’m also realizing the ignorance and privilege it is to only think of our country this way, now. america has always been about picking and choosing who deserves rights, who we consider a person. but, despite the deep-seated flaws of this country, i live in it. so do so many people i love. and that’s what I keep coming back to: the people i love, and my desire to protect them. at the very center of all the rage and hurt and anxiety and sorrow i’m feeling, is a deep, perilous love. i am holding onto that love. i hope you are, too.
