Happy New Year everyone! Enjoy the fireworks from Sydney, Australia! I feel 2025 will be a pivotal year for me. I’m finally releasing my magnum opus Bad Americans, a book by the People, of the People, and for the People, in one of the most ambitious publishing campaigns in literary history, with 16 publications across the next year and a half. The New Wei will continue to grow. We’ve reached the Twilight of the Publishers and their inability to release dynamic fiction like The Human Tragedy will simply embolden the rise of literary movements and author collectives like this one, changing the literary landscape and culture forever. I will be doing author events during this period and other lectures throughout the country, including at NYLA’s Combatting Racism Series online and in Phoenix at ALA LibLearnX in late January. Just wanted to share with y’all pieces of literature I find particularly compelling, as it’s food for thought and nourishment for the soul (if you’re in need of something new in which to read and bury your imagination). 😁📚📖🤓 1) Without question, the QUINTESSENTIAL Bohemian-Austrian/German poet of the modernist era, and my absolute favorite of them all, Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) is not for the austere of mind. His lyrical intensity WILL not disappoint you. And he aided immensely in getting me through my mother’s death when she first passed. A dear and complicated man. 2) Friedrich Hölderlin (1770-1843, Romanticism/German Idealism) began for me as a bit of an acquired taste, perhaps because I was so engorged in Rainer for about five years. He was a schizophrenic, which, astonishingly enough, didn’t seem to present itself within his works in the form of what many with the disease experience as psychotic episodes; Rather, his ability to paint scenery with merely words and write with all the emotional fervor and dramatics of a Shakespearean drama are what eventually piqued, and built, my interest. Great stuff. 3) Marina Tsvetaeva is quite the wordsmith (almost finished with the unfortunately thin book). However, her pieces pack quite a powerful punch—especially those regarding romantic (and unrequited) love. She was a prominent Russian/Soviet poet of the Russian Symbolism movement, born in 1892 and dying in 1941. 4) it’s imperative to be well-rounded. 😂😉 I’m eager for my book by Max Picard (Swiss, 1888-1965) entitled “The World of Silence” to arrive in the mail next week! From there, I’ll take on Alexander Pushkin and, oddly enough, Sylvia Plath (I only say oddly because my taste tends to sit somewhere within the realm of OLDDDDDD and dead artists.
