recent manga diary
- okay starting to read love bullet now.. the art honestly looks incredible im totally digging the art style 👁👁
- speaking of yuri im also reading erio and the electric doll. this is the new manga ive read the most of recently. it's a bit like kino's journey, mixed with yokohama kaidashi kikou, and pluto (naoki urasawa, and by extension, astro boy too). it tells of a post-war world in which androids destroyed a large chunk of humanity. because of that, people have taken to regressing to a pre-electricity world - into the world of steam. two girls walk away from their idyllic, albeit isolated life by the coast, in search of finding other humans and travel the world together. it has some really interesting world building and discusses some morally grey topics regarding humanity, war, and artificial intelligence.
- you might know the artist as the one who did a lot of work for final fantasy 14. the art is beautiful, with delicate linework, and a prominent steampunk aesthetic.
- going back to the yuri part - the main cast consists of a young teen and an android. the human girl has the power to create electricity, and so she charges her android by kissing her. they can charge via touching hands, but no they have to kiss. very cute.. i hyped it up but LMAO i don't know if i can recommend it for romance per se, as it's more platonic right now, but it's still a very charming read!
- i think this series would look so gorgeous if it came to life in an anime adaptation.. manifesting a steampunk anime in 2k25
- also started to read kageki shoujo, it's really fun so far!! those are my only thoughts on it for now. i haven't read a shoujo in so long i think.. might have to watch the anime adaptation as well, as i heard the animation is quite good.
- i also wanted to get into requiem of the rose king for the longest time, the brooding, gothic aesthetic totally looks up my alley, and the medieval politics looks interesting too. the pacing is a bit choppy, but idk if that's due to the poor fan translation, will have to source it from the library if i can..
- still catching up to medalist and shadows house, haven't read witch hat atelier in a while.
- caught up to skip and loafer 🥰 i wrote about it in some older diary entries, but it's literally so good. i really need to draw some skip loaf sometime..
- almost done the extra stories from emma.. and that's all folks!!

A One-of-a-Kind Affection: Skip to Loafer 53
This chapter revealed a LOT about Shima’s character so let’s break it down because oh my god. OH my god.
As was implied in the last page of the previous chapter, Shima is seriously put off guard by his conversation with Fumi. He can’t get over her comment: “Mitsumi-chan isn’t good at anything besides studying, is she?” She directly contradicts how Shima views Mitsumi, and thus prompts him to reevaluate his feelings.
To him, Mitsumi “has this image of always being right.” Keep in mind, Shima has already seen Mitsumi at her worst— from the very beginning, when she got lost in Tokyo! Shima has been there when Mitsumi failed, struggled, or was embarrassed with herself, and each time he only saw the girl who could pick herself up and run towards her goals, loafers in hand. He not only watched these things happen, but tried to give her a helping hand when she needed it, whether it was to encourage her, or help smooth out an awkward social situation. When Shima says Mitsumi “has this image of always being right” he doesn’t mean she is literally always right, but something with much more depth. Shima thinks Mitsumi, as a person, is fundamentally always right and good. Even when she fails. Even when she struggles. These are all things that make up Mitsumi, and therefore are always good (this guy. i can't).
The thing is, Shima himself is not even aware of just how highly he thinks of Mitsumi. He can acknowledge Mitsumi’s strengths and weaknesses, but unlike, say, Fumi, her closest and longest friend, he can't conceptualize objectively seeing Mitsumi's traits as anything other than positive. He likes her personality to the point it borders on putting her on a pedestal. This discrepancy between his opinion on Mitsumi and another close friend of Mitsumi causes him to question who IS Mitsumi, if not what he's been thinking this whole time?
To verify, he asks his friend Mukai, who basically repeats Fumi's words. Now Shima knows this is not a question of who is Mitsumi as a person, but who is Mitsumi to Shima?
(Shouout to Mukai for really helping Shima reach this critical break-through!)
When Mukai brings up the possibility of romance, Shima leaps to reject it because he is uncomfortable with romantic attraction itself.
Besides Mitsumi, romantic attraction always came from people who didn’t really know him and/or didn’t really care to know him. This had the opposite affect, and made Shima feel lonely and unloved. Unlike the most of the people Shima has dated, he actually really likes Mitsumi-chan as a person. There's an emphasis on liking her as a person because these are things he sees as absent or optional in romantic attraction. To describe his feelings for Mitsumi as romance discredits Mitsumi and what she means to him, which is why he asks with a frustrated expression, "Why does it always come back to romance?" Why does "liking someone a lot" have to be romantic?
Mukai hears this and recognizes that Shima seems to see “liking someone as a person” and “liking someone romantically” as separate things, so he tries to compare notes as to how he views romance vs how Shima views romance. On a scale of liking someone "a lot" to "not really" Shima places romance at the very bottom! Romance doesn't mean shit in comparison to friendship, or whatever it is he feels for Mitsumi. This makes sense because, again, Shima understands romantic attraction at best as a surface-level understanding of a person, and at worst as a detriment to the relationship(see: his parents). So there's no way he can like Mitsumi romantically AND as a person.
Mukai explains to Shima that he sees "liking someone as a person is a baseline," which aligns more closely to the common social perception of relationships. You start with liking the general vibes someone has, and then you becomes friends, and then becoming lovers is like the peak of a relationship's level of intimacy and affection. What's interesting is that both boys are correct about their perception of love. Even though Shima doesn't fully agree with Mukai, talking with him provides a new perspective on romance that Shima didn't consider before. Now he can finally consider that romance can add to a realationship's existing intimacy, not detract from it.
For most of the people in the story, as well as the audience, this might seem obvious, but for Shima this is incredibly novel and important, because it means that
Liking Mitsumi romantically doesn't mean he stops liking her as a person
Romantic attraction is another form of intimacy, not a performance or surface-level interaction.
When Mukai describes Mitsumi's feelings as a "one-of-a-kind" affection, he means it in a conventionally romantic way. Shima, on the other hand, understands Mitsumi is one-of-a-kind because he's never had a relationship or feelings like he does with her. He knows Mitsumi cares about him as a person, but before his conversation with Mukai, he didn't consider how romance can be another way of showing that you care for someone.
Romance between his parents only showed how much his father didn't care about his mom. Romance with the girls from school only showed how much they didn't really care about him. But Mitsumi fell in love with Shima because she cares about him, not despite of it. This is completely foreign territory for Shima. If romantic love is also a form of intimacy, then how is that any different from regular platonic love, or best friends? What does romantic attraction even look like?
As Shima recollects all the moments with Mitsumi that are dear to him, he wonders if what he viewed as "caring for someone as a person" were also romantic. Is it romantic to save extra food for someone else to have? Is it romantic to bring someone a souvenir when they go out of town? Is it romantic to teach someone how to hold a crab? These questions don't really have clear cut answers. Only Shima is able to decide what these things mean for him.
I want to bring your attention back to this crab, though. Besides being an adorable little crustacean, Shima's interaction with the crab directly parallels his journey trying to recontextualize romance.
In this scene, the crab is symbolic for romantic attraction. Shima awkwardly holds the crab Mitsumi gives him and expresses that this is an unfamiliar situation for him, just as receiving romantic affection from Mitsumi is a new and concept for him. Mitsumi is content with being able to share the crab (her feelings) with him and getting an honest answer back. The large panel that zooms in on Mitsumi looking down at the crab in Shima's hands draws attention to how content and happy she is spending time with Shima. It further emphasizes that their relationship, romantic or platonic, is about simply enjoying each other's company.
Even though Mitsumi tells Shima how to hold a crab, he ends up agitating the crab, which then pinches him and leave. I interpret this as when Shima initially started dating Mitsumi, he ended up treating it haphazardly, which caused Mitsumi to catch-on and break up with him. Finally, when Mukai, the person Shima was recently discussing romance and Mitsumi with, asks him about the crab, Shima responds in a daze, "I don't know," mirroring how currently, Shima doesn't know how he feels about romantic attraction, or how it might apply to him.
Furthermore, through the depiction of Mitsumi in Shima’s perspective, it’s implied the reason the crab pinches him is because he was focused on Mitsumi, and not holding the crab properly. This reflects the critical miscommunication from when they were dating. Shima was so concerned with protecting his prior dynamic with Mitsumi that he didn’t consider what committing to a genuine romantic relationship would require from him. He didn’t, or rather couldn’t, commit to a relationship as much as Mitsumi did. Mitsumi knew that she didn’t deserve that kind of stress, so she asked to remain friends.
Thanks to Mukai, however, Shima can start to understand that romance is a real option for his own feelings about Mitsumi, and it won't detract from their friendship if it is the case. It's this level of self-awareness that allows Shima to get flustered by Mitsumi getting physically close to him as they look at the crab.
I would even argue that it was the panel I have pictured on the left, with Mitsumi's smile, that is the moment Shima started getting flustered, since that panel is positioned to be in Shima's eye-line point of view, and takes up the majority of its page.
What is Shima thinking in this moment? He has 0 thoughts. Brain empty. Only one-of-a-kind feelings for a girl who he thinks is always amazing<3
I wanna reiterate this is truly such a special moment for Shima because while Mitsumi has always been a special person to him, he now understands that he thinks so because of his PERSONAL feelings. In caring for Mitsumi, Shima is able to care more about his own feelings. It’s a lovely payoff to all of his progress in understanding himself as an individual. He can discuss his personal life with Mukai, a friend who he previously kept at a distance. He can l stand up for himself when he thinks he being mistreated by an old friend. And he can even defend the people he cares about when other’s are inconsiderate to them. This is all part of Shima’s growth into becoming a fully realizing individual, and I’m so glad he’s been given the space to clumsily process all of this while remaining a true friend to Mitsumi.
TL; DR:
Shima truly adores Mitsumi and has only just realized that he likes Mitsumi to a different degree than what would be expected from a friend
Shima has been nonchalant about romance thus far because he didn't think romance was really about genuine intimacy, especially based on his past experiences
The narrative presents Shima's interest in Mitsumi as romantic attraction while taking great care in showing how romance has different meanings for different people and is not always the most important or intimate aspect of a relationship

Skip to Loafer Anime Episode 1, Part 1 - Thoughts and more thoughts? (Part 2/3)
Here is Part 1 of my Part 1 LOL
NOTE: these posts do contain manga spoilers/ spoilers to episode 1 of the anime
6. Nao's Introduction
When I was looking at my side by side comparison with the anime to the manga, I was REALLY surprised to see that THIS was a difference. Where in the anime, Mitsumi says something along the lines of “Nao is my dad’s sibling”, I was really surprised that the manga translation introduces Nao as Mistumi’s dad’s younger “brother.” I’m really glad for this change, because character-wise it just makes SOOOOO much more sense that Mitsumi would use a gender-neutral term in her perspective that introduces Nao to all of us.
When I was looking at two translations that are up on mangadex, I noticed that one had brother italicized, while the other doesn’t HM. Not too sure which one is the official one, but the italicized brother does give a different meaning than the one that isn't!
I’m really curious as to what the original Japanese translates to in the intro of Nao, and would love a confirmation as to what the official english release translation of it was if anyone can send me any info in regards to that!
Edit as of: Fri, April 7, 2023~
The lovely Millie on discord has let me know that the official english release translation is true to Nao's identity! Millie has also provided me with a photo - thank you Millie :))) So that's awesome for me to see that Nao's intro really isn't a change from the manga to the anime.
I'm still curious as to what the Japanese official manga translation is/ what the dialogue actually translate to in the anime, cause I think that'd give me far more context as to how the intro of Nao is adapted in the anime being introduced as "Nao is my dad's sibling", so if anyone has any info on that, I'm all ears and would love to know :)
Edit as of Friday, May 12th, 2023
The wonderful @li-changge has kindly explained the original Japanese translation. Please refer to the replies in this post :)))
7. Cute and cuter! Animals are the best.
I just thought it was so cute how we can see more of Mistumi’s lock screen in the anime! Honestly, I completely missed this when reading the manga
8. More Cherry Blossoms - they're falling for me, and I'm falling for them even more than I already am!
More cherry blossom action, but what’s cool is in the anime, we actually see it in action - LOL I love seeing anime doing its anime thing, but that's too bad in my screenshot.. you don't see any of the anime thing, so this is your sign to watch the episode again
9. Huh? She's stuck to it.
I love how we get to hear the little “huh?” that Shima does! In the manga, it seems more so that Shima notices Mitsumi, with no spoken reaction!
Also, in this sequence of “girl stuck on the wall” we literally see a crowd part before we see MItsumi which i think only adds to the humour of this moment. Also, hearing the characters say these lines and how the voice actors have delivered them so freakin' well only makes the dialogue of Shima and Mukai even funnier HAHA
10. Sound Rolling, Camera Speeding, Me Laughing
These moments were SO great to me on all senses - sound, visuals, my stomach muscles moving so I could ha ha ha
First of all, whatever gurgling sound mitsumi is doing in this moment made me topple over LOL
and then the moment of reveal when mitsumi looks at shima for the first time with the sound effects? Also, the anime throughout has SUCH a great use of realism and when to really exaggerate the dramatics which only makes things all the more funnier - and this moment before mitsumi turns, then having that bg music hit and the visual background turn dark, and then close up of that eye is one example of this anime’s great use of realism vs. heightened realism for effect
11. This Mitsumi Face
We get to see more of droopy mitsumi face in the anime and i’m here for it! This chibi-guilty face rocks my world and i’m very happy we get to see it, as it’s not really clear in the manga
12. A little mix and match
This next moment, the anime and manga actually swapped/combined together some visuals from different moments and put them in one and the way they used it imo is really cool!
In the manga, mitsumi has this post-train ride reflection moment. For the first time, it happens right before she meets shima
and the anime plays each sequence out in its own scene.
Then later, after they got off the train and shima asks mitsumi if she wants to run to school, mitsumi’s has her post-train ride reflection a second time. In the manga, it looks like this:
but in the anime, we just stay on her face
i think what’s cool with this choice of using the different vignette scenes only during the very first post-train ride relfection - the being lost, being in the wave of people, etc. is that with the funny bg music, the added visuals only make it more funny.
Then by having her second reflection only focused on her face with no background music at all, really makes us feel like she’s reflecting on what happened in a different way, with more seriousness, and more gravity, and we can feel that through the simplicity of just looking at her, no sounds aside for her inner thoughts

Hisoka/ Ilumi (HxH)
Yuzuki/ Makoto (Skip and Loafer)
Chihaya/ Taichi (Chihayafuru)
Thoughts?
Hisoka/Illumi
Ship It
Nobody serves cunt like they do lmao, I think from their interactions that they have a unique relationship where they seem to actually like each other? Which I'm not sure you could say they really like any other character, there's always an ulterior motive behind their other interactions. Also seeing that they get married (kind of) in the manga is just so them lmao.
I like their honest partnership, these two are such tricksters and schemers with everyone else, there is certainly a vulnerability these two share only with each other and such a straight forward honesty in what they want and are trying to achieve that only the two of them share. Also as stated before they do just look good together, truly served and left no crumbs lmao.
I guess not about the ship but it is pretty controversial to just...like Hisoka as a character lmao. Like don't get me wrong, he's awful and his creepiness towards Gon is uncomfortable, so I get it. But he's soooo entertaining to watch, and I think he's well written! I'm always interested to see his next move, he's unpredictable but also such a performer, he is one of my favorite characters in HxH.
Yuzuki/Makoto
Ship It
Oh my gooooooodddd the lesbians of all time!!!! I think the moment that made really me ship it was when Makoto is the first one to really appreciate Yuzuki's painting instead of just being there to try and get with Yuzuki, and how happy that made her and how she felt so seen ahhhhhh I love them.
God they're just so wholesome and really capture a lot of those common lesbian/sapphic feelings. Yuzuki is SUCH a girl's girl, the way that she values her female friendships so much and especially with Makoto where she truly feels comfortable around her instead of her the constant yet shallow attention she gets from guys. And Makoto becoming more confident of herself and not feeling the need for a boyrfiend after Yuzuki reassures her so much??? They truly are the cutest and have such a mutual love and appreciation for each other.
It should be more popular, in fact I should spread the Yuzumako agenda more I've been slacking, I love this ship soooo much.
Chihaya/Taichi
I'm actually gonna skip this one for now! I'm doing a Chihayafuru rewatch right now because I've forgotten literally everything aklfsdlsklg so I don't think I can give good answers (but the answer is also yes absolutely they are IT I love them)

buncha words 'bout some spring animes #3
Still here, still watching, still writing. Can't believe it's May already. I remember having this weird feeling last time I was watching seasonal anime - that I can't wait for the next episode to come out but once it does, I realise how time flies. It's almost scary! Many of the series that have only just come out are already at the halfway point. ...But let's not think about the inevitablility of time passing and instad talk about them animes. Enjoy!
Hell's Paradise (ep. 5) - After episode 4 I was a bit wary of where Sagiri's plot was going but episode 5 assuaged my worries somewhat. I used to get very annoyed whenever an action show would introduce A Sexist character. Why aren't the female characters just allowed to be badass without anyone putting them down, I was thinking to myself. Why can't I just have a nice escapist fantasy? But somehow I don't mind it here. I'm not sure why - whether it's because I changed or because (so far) Jigokuraku handled this subject better, or at least differently than other series I've watched. We'll see what comes next. As for the rest of the episode, I feel like the series is still at the phase of setting things up and I really hope the plot moves forward next time. Nurugai is Very Good.
Oshi No Ko (ep. 4) - I won't be a stinker this time, I quite liked this episode. We got to see Aqua acting and I got this great idea for battle-shounen like manga about acting, where the main character has to analyse their surroundings and gather data about their fellow actors to know how to rile them in front of the camera, so that they act well. (I'm going to pitch this to President of Anime whenever I get the chance.) I'm curious how will that reality TV show that Aqua got hired to act in go. As for the school plot... I don't watch many idol shows but I recall 'school of idols' is a recurring theme. Will Oshi No Ko subvert it somehow or play it straight? No idea. I'd assume the former if not for plethora of colour-coded female characters we've met already. I appreciate this series' commentary on show-business harsh truths a lot but it somehow doesn't feel grounded in reality because of the visuals, particularly character designs. And I REALLY hope there'll be more male characters in the main cast, although judging by the opening, that might not be the case.
Tengoku-Daimakyou (ep. 5) - We focus more on Maru and Kiruko this time, which is good because They Are Great. By the way, I've been reading a little about this series' production and I was surprised to learn that it's really speeding through the manga - but does it so well that it doesn't feel rushed or anything like that. It doesn't happen often in anime, I think. I'll probably read the manga once the series ends just to see how does the story unfold there (and to see all the quality K&M content that's been cut from anime). Also I absolutely need to cite one sentence from ANN's weekly review of T-D because it was simultaneously the best and the worst sentence I've read in a review in a while: "And while Maru's boner gets in the way of their hug, we can see that it's not getting in the way of their friendship." Absolute perfection.
Skip and Loafer (ep. 5) - I've already written how I appreciate what they do with Egashira in this series and episode 5 fleshes her out even more. I think my favourite moment was after Egashira's and Mitsumi's clash with the third-years in the gym - how Egashira made sure to remember the names of the students who were rude to them, while Mitsumi remembered the name of the one who helped them. It's a very telling character moment for them both. Skip and Loafer is really growing on me, it might even end up as my favourite series of this season. I'm literally feeling happier after watching every episode, it's that powerful.
My Love Story with Yamada-kun ar Lv999! (ep. 5-6) - As I thought, the matter with Runa is solved pretty quickly and she's already Akane's bestie in episode 6. That's pretty good in my opinion. Even if Runa's change of heart may be a bit sudden, I don't think she'd make a compelling long-term antagonist. That 'gamer guy' from episode 5 gave me massive creeps and there was some great direction in that scene in the toilet. I like that even though ultimately nothing bad happened, the guys from the guild immediately went to the rescue because they knew the potential danger. Then episode 6 is back to usual shenanigans and I thought it was very funny. And one important note: Kouki Uchiyama's acting when Yamada was talking to Eita right after waking up was Extremely Good.
And in the backlog section:
The Witch from Mercury (season 1, ep. 7-9) - You know guys... maybe it's because the Internet was screaming about Prospera lately (I didn't catch any spoilers, thankfully) but I'm starting to get a feeling she might be a bad guy! On a serious note, it's very interesting how Prospera is contrasted with Delling and papa Jeturk (whatever his name is, I don't even care). All three of them are shitty parents but whereas Delling and Jeturk are very openly shitty in how demanding, strict and cold they are towards their children, the way Prospera treats Suletta is just chilling. Only three episodes left in season 1, I have no idea what might happen in the finale but I'm definitely looking forward to find out.
Spy x Family (ep. 6-7) - As I knew that The Face was coming, I actually appreciated The Punch more - that was a real good piece of animation. Damian's developing crush on Anya (including the special romanticised version of her in his eyes) and Loid suspecting that Becky obviously must be plotting a political sabotage or something because he just doesn't get kids were hilarious. Also, I totally forgot about Yor's and Anya's time together (or maybe it wasn't in the manga, though I think it was). It was great! I'm not going to be original by saying that Yor often feels a bit secondary in this family, so it was real nice seeing her getting more screentime. Next episode Yuri will show up - I think his visit was the last thing I've read in the manga, so I have no idea what happens next.
Aaand that'd be the end of this week's musings and ramblings. I start a new job on Monday but I think I should be able to keep up with all the shows. At least I must find some time for more Skip and Loafer. Hope you enjoyed reading and see ya!

Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Thanks....
hi!! sorry for the late answer i have to consider a lot about this lmao. i apologize in advance because i'm bad with character rankings, so: this top 10 are not in any order, i limit myself on one character per series, and it's probably rly rly subjective and even then i'm still not sure so it's more like just a ten characters i love list :D
kim dokja (omniscient reader's viewpoint): character of all time, really. it's actually so hard to verbalize how much i love him but--someone who finds himself unlovable but loves with all his heart. i adore his dynamics with every single other character in orv and the writing utilized a very interesting first person pov in his stead. also he's a sad pathetic loser and that's why he's so perfect
takumi asa (ikoku nikki): a young girl who's just a girl--she's silly and outgoing and withdrawn and serious, she's trying her best to be the her that she wants to be. i just feel like she's written with so much empathy and care and it shows in how wonderful her character arc is so far 🥺🥺 i truly love her so much
iwakura mitsumi (skip to loafer): a girl with SO much dream and spirit, how can you not adore her!! overwhelmingly honest with herself and so emotionally intelligent anyone would be shamed. just such a refreshing character to see when we're talking abt a story of youth
natsume takahashi (natsume yuujinchou): you can literally feel his compassion from just reading/watching him he's just so 😭😭 the epitome of you need to choose to be kind yourself but it's only from others that you could get to know what kindness is in the first place. he has to learn to accept that he is loved first to properly love!! that's peak fiction!!
hinata shoyou (haikyuu): actual ball of sunshine and probably who made me end up loving outgoing characters lmao. infectious passion and just absolute masterful writing. haikyuu is just rly good but hinata's character arc is an all timer
sohma yuki (fruits basket): all he ever wants to be is to be kind and to be himself!! i feel like i need a read to get a proper grasp on him but his arc means so much to me. once again, learning to be loved to love
hild (vinland saga): i'm unreasonably attached to her and it's probably not stopping for a long time lol. how she parallels with the mc but is her own person, letting go of the grief and anger and relearning to believe in others. also i simply have the biggest crush on her
qi yan (clear and muddy loss of love): girlboss gaslighter, something is just so wrong with her. the conflicting feelings between revenge and lesbianism and everything else is just so good. a pathetic little meow meow with several successful assassinations under her belt
anonymous (shimanami tasogare): to live positively in isolation, to be alone but not lonely... they're the first one to taught me that it's possible. so much charm in just a short character arc
kodama sakuko (koisenu futari): she means so much to me!! straightforward and honest and always true to herself. very very amazing journey of self discovery i have never been so proud of a character!!
perhaps half of this would make no sense without the context that comes with the character's story but i hope this is decipherable lmao
#tldr i love characters who are inherently kind but still has to put an effort to show that kindness#especially when it comes to learning that they to are worthy of love and deserving of kindness#just. clenches fist. these kinda guys#that's why it ended up such a long post. sorry about that

For shoujo anime, A Sign of Affection is a good recent addition to the genre, and it's about adults too! If you want a genuinely good, relaxed romance about high school students growing and maturing, Skip and Loafer! (It even has a trans side character who just exists!) Oh, you want wlw, not het? Bloom into You, unfinished yet the gold standard. Or maybe you want historical shows? I've only watched the first season, but Golden Kamuy looks like a good romp. Vinland Saga, meanwhile, is a slower burn in its development, but it delivers some really powerful character growth and has some good action and drama in the meanwhile.
Maybe a drama less set in a distinct historial period is what you want? Violet Evergarden is a literally beautiful (full Kyoani production in effect) story about a girl setting down a weapon in exchange for learning how to convey the emotions of others, and understand her own. ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Department is a slow-paced political thriller about a fictional kingdom and one of the men assigned to keep the peace. Dungeon Meshi is just actually the best anime I've ever watched, a fantasy show about fantastically-characterized dungeon delvers learning to eat good food and have moments of happiness amidst the life-threatening setting, and which beautifully balances serious and comedic tones.
Speaking of - comedies! Bocchi the Rock has some of the best directing and comedy chops I've seen, and it comes with music too! Another music-minded comedy is Zombieland Saga - yes, its name has zombies, trust me it's a fantastic comedy show. The robot I'm reblogging from would be saddened if I didn't mention Nichijou as well, not something I've watched but which she insists is stellar.
Or maybe you just want to relax? Mr. Villain's Day Off is a lovely show about the quiet moments of a costumed-superheroes-vs-alien-invaders setting, featuring a panda-obsessed villainous general as its MC. Too Cute Crisis carries on an alien theming as outworlds reach Earth and are just bowled over by the absurd cuteness of Earth animals; pet owners will absolutely resonate with this show.
Anyway that's just a selection of some really good stuff out there that's not shonen, or isekai, without any 'anime humor' (unless my memory lies to me), if anyone reads it and wants to check some stuff out.
ppl are so mad in the replies to this tweet but op is literally right

Spring 2023 Anime Wrapup
Original Post:
This sure was a season. I finished 14 full-length series, plus some OVAs and carryovers. Undisputed show of the season Oshi no Ko and underrated hit Dead Mount Death Play lead the pack, but there's a range of other content between hate-watchable and actually good as well.
New Stuff:
Oshi no Ko (My Star) - Holy shit. I don't want to say much to avoid spoilers, but it was a 10/10 candidate from episode one and still might end up there on rewatch. For now 9/10, you MUST watch this. There will be a post forthcoming when I process it for a while.
Isekai de Cheat Skill wo Te ni Shita Ore wa, Genjitsu Sekai wo mo Musou Suru: Level Up wa Jinsei wo Kaeta (I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in The Real World, Too) - They put the entire power fantasy in the title for your convenience. It's not a great message that all you need to do to become popular is inherit a bunch of money and literally magically change your entire body, but here we are. The power fantasy is truly stratospheric - for example, he accidentally seduces a model and is proposed to by a princess in the space of one episode. The "animation" (or lack thereof) doesn't give the at best mediocre plot the support it needs, alas. A very generous 6/10.
Jigokuraku (Hell's Paradise) - Samurai Suicide Squad with a hearty helping of EDGE and a surprising amount of heart. The action was good, even though it sometimes felt like they ran out of time to make things truly excellent. 8/10.
Kanojo ga Koushaku-tei ni Itta Riyuu (The Reason Why Raeliana Ended up at the Duke's Mansion) - Another villainess anime, this time with the twist being that she becomes a villainess on purpose in order to save her own life. Most of the time the plot foreknowledge twist was used to undermine typical shoujo tropes rather than heighten them. Between that and the nothing ending, I found it oddly muted. 7/10.
Kimi wa Houkago Insomnia (Insomniacs After School) - I didn't finish this yet, because I don't think I'm ready for the emotional punches it's setting up. Not dropped, just not done.
Skip to Loafer (Skip and Loafer) - A country-girl-in-the-big-city shoujo story, in which our protagonist good-natures her way through a whole stable of stock high school antagonists. I like that given only twelve episodes to work with they didn't speedrun to parts where relationships happen, and instead let the story take its time. This is the first time since Hyouka I've really liked something with this sort of sedate pace. Looking forward to more! 8/10.
Tengoku Daimakyou (Heavenly Delusion) - A trip through the post-apocalypse featuring spooky monsters, bioethics failures, and a mix of hope and despair at how people face life after the end. Worth a watch, but be aware there's some extreme content. 8/10
Yamada-kun to Lv999 no Koi wo Suru (Loving Yamada at Lv999) - Shoujo for gamers! Unlike Raeliana above this shoujo with a twist did it for me. For personal reasons I appreciated the respect paid to online relationships. Convincing characters and relationships plus distinct and consistent art make this a very honorable 8/10.
Otonari ni Ginga (A Galaxy Next Door) - A guy touches an alien princess funny and they're married now. Yes, another one. This time, she's his manga assistant. Very light and fluffy, despite the subtheme of family alienation. 7/10, though at the high end for myself.
Dead Mount Death Play - Reverse Isekai! With a name like that you'd expect some serious edge, and there is some. Surprisingly though the themes are very wholesome. This was the biggest surprise of the season. I didn't watch it in the first round of shows, but when I looked at it out of curiosity it blew me away. 9/10, you should really watch this.
Tonikaku Kawaii - This is a sequel, but I hadn't watched the previous season, so it's new to me. I added it later in the season mostly out of curiosity. It turned out to be another entry in the impossibly perfect significant other microgenre, like The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten. As with Angel Next Door, the point is that you should be an actual good person. This time it's about the rewards of getting married as soon as possible, and here are step-by-step instructions. There's a subtle-but-not-subtle supernatural undercurrent that becomes increasingly obvious in season 2, as well. 7/10.
Sequels:
Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story Season 2 - What can you say about a show that introduces multiple dangerous forbidden techniques in the middle of a tournament arc... of golf? Anyway here's lesbians doing more wacky special moves. If you're into weird sports anime you're sure to be into this. 8/10.
Dr. Stone: New World - There was a lot more yadda yadda this time, so it fell a bit flat. The less they show Senku's work coming up with things the more they feel like instant win buttons instead of things they worked for. I had hoped the cast size constraint in the second half of the season would have let them go back to spending time on inventions, but alas no. 7/10.
Kimetsu no Yaiba: Katanakaji no Sato-hen (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc) - Yep, it was more Demon Slayer. I'm pleased that Demon Slayer has mostly maintained its quality, in contrast with My Hero Academia which fell off a bit in the middle there. 8/10.
Kidou Senshi Gundam: Suisei no Majo Season 2 (Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury Season 2) - The robots (and lesbians) are cool, but I don't see how it's possible to miss the "war (and unfettered capitalism) is bad" message. It's also a new take on Revolutionary Girl Utena, which I've been meaning to re-watch and write about for some time. No excuse now, I suppose. 8/10.
Uma Musume: Pretty Derby - Road to the Top - I forgot to put this on the first list because it's a four episode ONA that hadn't started airing yet. As one of the weird sports anime I actually enjoy, of course I was up for even just a small arc of it. 8/10.
Carryovers:
Kubo-san wa Mob wo Yurusanai (Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible) - Finally a bulli anime I can enjoy, thanks to it not actually being bulli for very long. In the end this was a sort of nothing-in-particular show, falling somewhere in the fuzzy area around impossibly perfect SO and teasing anime. As expected it's almost all frosting and no cake, but I did enjoy my time with it. 7/10.
Itai no wa Iya nano de Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu. 2 (BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense. Season 2) - This fell off a bit, and I think I know why. It suffered from the same thing as later Dog Days seasons, where it used its expansive cast by shuffling who hangs out with who. This provides less novelty than the original concept of "what will they get up to now" did, and it also necessarily slows things to a crawl as we need to see more perspectives on every event as a result. Still, the characters remain fun and the game is as busted as ever. 7/10.
Dropped:
Kaminaki Sekai no Kamisama Katsudou - Garbage. A fetish fest with godawful CGI. Rancid vibes. You'll never know where it's going. You may have trouble looking away. I did eventually, though. Dropped at episode 10. 6/10.
Isekai One Turn Kill Neesan: Ane Douhan no Isekai Seikatsu Hajimemashita (My One-Hit Kill Sister) - Lots of Rule D edging. The quality isn't the most consistent, the tropes are basic, and little of value is to be found here. When it's good, it's actually kinda good. Unfortunately it got boring. Dropped at episode 10. 6/10.
Edomae Elf (Otaku Elf) - Elf in real world! Wooo! A nice comfy show. Not much happens, but it's cute enough. Got boring in the end though. Dropped at episode 10. 7/10.
My Home Hero - It's hard to think of anything recently that used tension and suspense to this degree. That said, the every-episode cliffhangers eventually got exhausting and turned me off and I stopped keeping up. 7/10 not for me.

CHAPTER 1 ~ dress up
You never intended to end up at this Halloween party. You didn't even know who to expect to see here, other than your roommate's friend from high school, the host, who had invited y'all as a package deal even though she knew you didn't really do parties. At least not ones like hers, where every bedroom ended up occupied by the end of the night and nearly no one went home alone. Thrilled to break out of your lame group of friends for a taste of flirtation and fun, you tried to relax into the scene but the unspoken expectation of casual sex intimidated you the tiniest bit.
Speaking of casual sex, there was Jungkook.
Used to admiring him from afar in your "14 Films To See Before You Graduate" class, you paused to take in the sight of him in what you supposed was a more natural habitat. Everyone knew Jungkook got girls, thanks to the rumor his first freshman-year hookup had started about his seriously impressive dick. He had a beautiful body too, carefully crafted muscles obvious even beneath his usual baggy black clothes, so as the more intimate rumors spread and various co-signers confirmed every detail from length to curve to (you had always hated this word, but...) girth, getting a piece of all that became a badge of honor among the girls in your grade. You had never really understood how the awkward boy who hid manga under his desk in class could supposedly be such a sex symbol, but you almost felt bad for him. That kind of reputation following you around everywhere couldn't be all fun and games. If anything, though, it had intrigued you even more about the rest of him, all his little weeb quirks and the way he debated your points in the discussion boards like he actually cared. He wasn't exactly studious in general, but he clearly loved film and you enjoyed speaking up in class just to see how he would jump off of your observations. You hadn't really talked to him other than that, but he didn't seem to be talking to anyone else tonight either. From the corner, you let yourself appreciate the way his nervous hands tugged at the skinny black tie of his costume, freeing more of his throat from a thin yellow button-down shirt.
At least you no longer felt overdressed in your Nancy Drew outfit. The retro headband, brown loafers, and bookish plaid knee-length skirt set a much more sophisticated tone than most other ensembles you'd seen, but Jungkook's weeb ass had basically worn a full suit to channel Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop. With his grown-out hair tousled and a navy pinstripe jacket cinched tight with two strips of electrical tape over his tiny waist, you couldn't deny that he rocked it. He leaned against a long plastic table left in the hallway, bobbing his head to the music in the next room and adjusting the too-slim suit pants around his thick thighs. His translucent cup stayed hidden behind a hip until he raised it quickly to his face for another sip of...red wine? Probably Franzia, knowing tonight's crowd, but anything was better than beer. You made a beeline for the one boy with taste at this party, your sole mission now to get wine drunk, sneak some Usher throwbacks on this playlist, and drop it low enough to leave some dude hard on the dance floor. #wastehistime2019, yknow.
"Hey!" You got his attention, grabbing the hand with the cup before he could lower it out of view again. His eyes grew comically wide and his mouth formed an "o" in shock before you demanded "Where is the wine?" and he pressed his lips back into a line, stuttering.
"I-I-I'm sorry, I just brought a bottle because the beer here sucks but I think it's all gone by now, I tried to hide it but yeah anyway you can have the rest of this one if you want though." Wincing at his own ramble, he ruffled the retro pouf of his hair with one hand and proffered the plastic cup in another. Both actions highlighted how pretty his hands were and you were just slightly tipsy enough to thread your fingers over his in the also-pretty black waves falling over his yep-still-just-as-pretty cheekbones.
"Aw, it's okay, I don't want to take your wine. No more liquid courage for me," you grinned, dotting the lightest kiss on his nose. It was an innocent gesture, but as your face naturally lowered so your noses touched, leaving your lips centimeters away from each other, something snapped—in him.
His wine discarded on the table, a hand curled around to clutch your ass and you practically felt his tongue before you felt his lips. Slamming your body abruptly into his, he nudged a thigh between your legs to grind it up on your center and as your arm got caught between your bodies, the tension you sensed filling his frame gave you pause. You pushed him away gently but firmly with the hand already flattened against his rock-solid abs. Looking down at the slight space restored between y'all, you removed his hands from his hair and your ass and laced them in yours to guide him back against the wall.
"I...what was that?" you almost giggled. You definitely weren't trying to laugh at him, but you couldn't hide your surprise at this first potential proof of his fuckboy reputation.
"I'm—" his whole face crumpled, both from the simple sting of your seeming rejection and the possibility that he had broken a boundary or forced himself on you against your wishes, which made him so sick he could barely face you. Squirming under your light hold but not quite resisting, he rambled again: "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to force myself on you or anything, don't worry I would never try anything if you didn't want to, I just figured we might as well get to the point if you did because, uh...when girls touch me like that or even talk to me at these things it's pretty much always just because they...want to."
"Jungkook," you breathed, pulsing your hands over his in reassurance. He squeezed his eyes shut, still distraught, and when they opened, you had craned your neck to meet his averted gaze.
"I never said I didn't want to."
His eyes widened again. "Uh...uh...then..." he trailed off, never having needed to directly proposition a girl like this before. He really had been inexperienced before the rapid escalation of college, and was at a loss for how to get to the good stuff from here via anything more eloquent than a rushed "Wanna fuck?" You shook your head silently, nose grazing his again, and let go of one hand to cup his face with care, like he was something precious you were scared of breaking.
"What? You want to get right to fucking me?" you murmured into his ear. He shivered at hearing you curse for the first time, freed from the constraints of class discussions and closer than he ever guessed you'd get to him. "Is that really what you want? Or is it what you think I do? Because if it's alright, I think I want something better. For you."
You pressed a new kiss to his nose, only slightly stronger than the one that had started all this. He held his breath and his untouched, open mouth trembled as you scattered soft introductions of your lips across his forehead, to his temples, over the scar that sliced his cheekbone. Finally inhaling a skittery heave of your shared air as you passed closer to his lips, he forced it back out in frustration when you ducked away to nudge under his jaw instead. Returning your hand to his hair, you grinned, enjoying the spike in his pulse under your thumb and skipping the tip of your tongue lightly over his neck right up to the earlobe. You lifted the choppy ends of his waves away from the dangly silver hoop they hid, tensing the strands just slightly between your fingers in an inability to hide your glee. Something told you this was going to drive him crazy.
Taking a slight detour to suck his pierced lobe between your lips, you responded to Jungkook’s low moan of surprise by wedging your tongue through the first oversized hole and letting your teeth clatter over multiple rings of metal. He was trying so hard to stay pliant under you, but the tease of slight pain in a new and unusual spot made him want your mouth more, anywhere he could get it. No one had ever spent this much time tracing so few inches of skin.
And so many girls had buried his face in their necks, craving evidence of an encounter with the Jeon Jungkook, that a strange kind of empathy caught him off guard when you showed him how good it could feel to receive. You connected your lips to the hollow right under his ear, feeling the tendons stretch as his head lolled away from you. Working him through a cascade of light gasps, you stepped away satisfied once you had sucked a dark bloom to the surface. He watched you leave with his mouth agape and chest heaving, unable to believe you could just walk away with a wave and a "See you in class!"
But you did, and he would.
"Shit!" he swore, a shaky hand darting straight to the spot. Now he had to keep his hair long for at least another two or three days. If he showed up to discussion on Monday and had to watch you admiring your work on his skin, he would probably just die on the spot. And that would not be very Spike Spiegel of him.

Trevor chuckles, and it spreads into a large grin as Elijah laughs out loud. His heart skips another beat, and in that moment, he wants to either kiss the wolf, or find a way to record his laugh, so that he can listen to it whenever he feels down. "You do look like a pasta and steak kinda guy. Guess you're the steak and me the noodles then?" He continues in jest. And then he's roaring in laughter at Elijah saying he'll cancel his appointment with the surgeon. "You're such an idiot." But the insult is spoken with much affection.
"Alright, alright. But you can leave once I've syphoned one person if you want, okay? I doubt you want to stay in there much longer than needed." Most people of lower ranks hate the Château, but someone like Elijah is probably also quite nervous about going in there. After all, all hunters end up dead or prisoners that have it the hardest———and they deserve it in his opinion. But Elijah... his hunter. He'll never let that secret reach anyone's ears, because he needs this man to stay safe and out of harm. "Thank you though, for not leaving me alone." He doesn't mean just at the Château, but also at his bedside.
Once inside the Château, Trevor has to hold in a laugh when Eli defends him against an innocent prisoner. Though, he does truly appreciate it, because while he can walk, it wouldn't take much for him to lose his balance. Truth is, Trevor doesn't tell the wolf that he'd asked for no humans to be amongst the prisoners———he'd used the reason that they had little life force compared to supernatural, but truth be told, it was because he'd known... known that watching him kill a human might have been terribly triggering for the younger man.
His feeding is interrupted, surprisingly, not by the intense fear coming from his next two preys, but from Elijah himself. Trevor cannot discern what the multitude of feelings are as they're both positive and negative, and truth be told, he also cannot tell whether he's the one targeted. He walks back to the wolf for a moment, leaning his head closer to whisper only for him to hear. "If it's too much, I'll understand if you prefer to look away." Then he removes his loafers, so that he was barefoot. "I don't want you to look at me differently." And there, as he turns his back to the wolf, the black wings come out and he completely shifts into his elysian form—he's so hungry. His next target quite literally gets jumped on, like a bird of prey, snatching his meal. This time, Trevor bites the male mage's forehead. The noises the victim makes are quite unnerving really; first a scream of pain, but then, moans, just like the mage before him. And his eyes, widened in terror and confusion. He knows he's dying and yet enjoying every single second of his death.
Once done, Trevor stumbles back like a drunkard, and a soft giggles falls from his mouth. The last one is a another mage who manages to break free from her bindings, but she doesn't go very far. And the wolf that he used to be is triggered, and this time, he crunches down, approaching her like he would've have under a full moon. "It's alright———it won't hurt... much." He whispers, then lashes out at her, ripping through her stomach like he'll devour her. But he siphons her as she hits him with all her might, but it's no use, and soon, her strength leaves her, and moments later, she too is dead, completely drained.
Eli hadn't actually thought about the fact that he really had done something insane. He'd jumped on a grenade to save Trevor. There were reasons why he had acted without thinking. Why that had been the response he'd had when the other man had been in danger. But they weren't things he could think about deeply yet. Not yet. He'd never done anything like that for anyone. Even kin. It had never occurred to him to do something so selfless for another person. Because he'd always been a selfish, scheming, survivor.
The wolf says nothing when Trevor speaks and gives them a long beat before he turns it on its head and takes the teeth out of it. He smiles, thankful at how Trevor responded. He nodded his head. "You found me out Angel. I'm idiot noddle-sexual." His smile turned into a grin as he added, "But that's just cuz I make those pretty little wings flap." Eli laughed out loud when Trevor said that boobs wouldn't look good on him. "I guess I'll call the plastic surgeon and tell him to cancel the boob job I had planned."
Eli very nearly growled at Trevor's teasing little comments. But he kept his cool even if his brain was now imagining all the things he was going to do to Trevor once the Elysian was back up to his regular strength. Making Trevor unable to walk again sounded right up their alley, pun intended.
Eli hadn't left Trevor's side and just ridden out the high on his own for the most part. He hadn't trusted himself around too many people when he was full of Elysian blood. But now that Trevor was awake he wouldn't feel guilty catching up with the handful of people that really mattered. He hadn't seen them on any casualty lists. The wolf nods when Trevor says no one would be coming to the house, which made him relax a little. He snorted when Trevor said he didn't have to go inside. "Shut up. I ain't letting you limp in there on your own." But he hated the Chateau. And he had avoided it at all costs. But he wasn't going to let Trevor go along either. His discomfort he knew was palpable. But he could handle his shit.
The wolf's face was carefully blank. Dressed like he would if he was going to work as private security. Eli didn't look or acknowledge any of the prisoners. Not wanting to be recognized by anyone. Probably not but the chances were never zero in this cesspit. Another reason why he stayed out of the Chateau. Only when one prisoner actually had the balls to reach out and try and touch Trevor, Eli broke two fingers, a warning flash of green wolf eyes. Eli set himself up against the wall of the room that was probably once a torture chamber, crossing his arms. God, he hated this place. Looking at the poor fucking wretches that had been lined up.
He'd seen Trevor fight before. He'd even seen Trevor kill before. And nearly kill. But this was something he'd never seen. Less of an angel and more a hawk. The only thing that Eli is grateful for is that none of the three are human. They were traitors. But so was he. So many times over. And if he'd ever been caught. If he ever was caught. He'd be lucky to get a death as fast as this one. It was brutal, bloody and perfunctory. But there was something sick and beautiful about the look on Trevor's face with the blood smeared lips. He'd never seen what Elysian's could do if they didn't stop feeding. And it gave him an uncomfortable impression of a vampire for just a moment. As he watched Trevor crush bone with his teeth he thought about what they felt like in his own skin, how very different. This was the man he'd saved. And even watching the gory display Eli knew that he would've done it again. Because even this grotesque display didn't change how he felt for the Elysian. The thought surprised him and worried him.

Storytime iii (longtime, no see)
November 27th, 1957
Jack was pacing. And pacing. And pacing. He checked his watch. Had really only three minutes had gone by from the last time he'd checked? He ran his hand through his hair, a habit he often did when he would get stressed.
"Jack, come and sit. Nothing is going to change what's happened," his campaign worker called out.
Jack turned around, a look of complete fear etched onto his face.
// I'm such a lousy husband.//
Jack let out a sigh, before coming to look out the window at the large fluffy clouds. He couldn't get his mind off her. Jackie.
His mind was in a barrel race of thoughts, one looping right after the next. What if something happens to the baby? What if something happens to Jackie? What if he didn't get there in time? What if the hospital messed something up? What if the baby was stillborn, just like Arabella? Was Jackie already mourning the loss of their child? What if-
"Jack, please. Have a drink." Jack was rattled from his thoughts, to find one of his campaign workers holding a drink of Scotch out in front of him.
Normally, Jack would be tempted to drink, to celebrate the birth of his child. But now, no. He was far too stressed to even think of lifting a drink to his lips. He wanted to be ready. Ready to run from the plane, and literally almost run to the hospital.
// I should have stayed home. I should have KNOWN this would have happened, especially after Arabella. How dumb can one person be?//
"What's on your mind, Jack?" He asked, as Jack pushed his arm away.
Oh, um, nothing. I'm just in my thoughts. Just thinking of Jackie, that's all."
"Jack, you didn't know that this was going to happen."
"Yeah, but I should've!" Jack snapped, standing up. "I'm such an idiot! She was begging me not to go, I should have listened to her. I didn't know better. I thought that I could head to a trip to Florida, one day, just to discuss my political future. I didn't think that she would've gone into labor in the middle of the flight!"
Jack sat down again, putting his head in his hands. "I'm just...worried. I'm worried that..." Jack didn't want to voice what he was thinking, but he knew that he would have to. "I'm worried that something bad is going to happen to them." His friend seemed to understand. He knew that the Kennedys had a rough past with having children.
"You can't think like that, Jack. I know it's hard, but you can't."
Just as he finished talking, one of the air staff poked his head through the door. "Senator? We'll be descending shortly."
***
The car ride to the hospital seemed to take hours, each minute growing painstakingly longer. Jack was watching his breathing, trying to relax and count his breaths. He knew that he couldn't show up to the hospital frantic and worried. That would be the opposite of what Jackie would need, especially if something happened.
//Breathe, breathe. Jackie and the baby will be fine. They're doing fine. //
The car barely pulled to a stop before Jack bounded up the steps, two by two. He knew that he'd pay the price with his back later, but he didn't care. He was slowly unraveling, minute by minute. He briskly walked over to the receptionist's desk, quickly asking, "Do you know what room Mrs. Kennedy is in?"
"Why, hello Senator," The lady at the front desk greeted. On a normal day, Jack would have noticed her beauty, and might have even flirted back. But not today. His sole and sheer focus was on his wife and his child. His fingers drummed on the counter, while she began to look for the information on file.
"She's in room 245."
"Thanks," Jack responded breathlessly, before taking off towards the elevator.
After several more agonizing minutes of waiting and trying to search for the right room, Jack finally found it. Standing in front of room 245, he sucked in his cheeks, trying to get himself back into order. He was trying to prepare himself for the worst that was going to happen.
//You can't think like that,// he told himself one more time before knocking on the door gently.
"Come in!" His voice was beating faster than a rabbit that was cornered by a fox. He gripped the handle, opening it gingerly.
He saw his wife, who looked tired, but still effortlessly beautiful. The next words slipped out of him, like a waterfall.
"I'm so, so, so sorry, Jackie. I should have been here, especially when you asked for me to. I can't believe I did that to you, especially after everything that happened with Arabella. I'm such an awful husband for leaving you like that. I can't forgive myself if something happened and I wasn't there to-"
"Jack, please. It's alright." Jackie cut him off quietly, but Jack didn't seem to hear.
"What if something happened to you? I can't believe I did what I did. I can't believe you still love me, for all of the mistakes that I've made, especially after Arabella. I promise-"
"Jack!" Jackie said, this time with more force in her voice, a soft laugh following. She grasped his hand gently, giving it a gentle squeeze.
"You haven't met her yet, have you?" Jack's face wrinkled in confusion.
"Met who?"
Jackie gave him a smile, the happiness pouring out of her eyes. "Your daughter."
Jack felt his breathing hitch. "I...I have... a daughter?"
"Yes!" Jackie responded, letting out a giggle due to her husband's reaction. She gestured with her gaze to the corner of the room. Jack turned, and noticed a bassinet that wasn't there before.
Jack looked back and forth, between his wife and baby, not sure who to greet first.
"Go say hi," Jackie urged. Jack walked tentatively over to to the bassinet, part of him still terrified that his daughter wouldn't be there. Gazing down, he felt his voice catch in his throat, and felt a wave of emotion encompass him unlike anything he had experienced before.
There she was. His daughter. She was sleeping quietly, but she was there. She was alive, and she was perfect. Her fingers were clenched in small fists, one of them resting near her face. She had big pouty lips, and small tufts of golden, light brown hair.
Jack could feel the tears swell in his eyes as he glanced down at the bundle of joy that was his child.
//She's mine. I'm a father. I'm a FATHER.//
With that notion, Jack could feel the lump in his throat start to rise, and he turned to his wife, the tears starting to form in his eyes.
"Can...can I hold her?" Jack seemed to be at a loss for words.
"Of course you can, Jack. Bring her over here." Jack reached down into the bassinet, carefully reaching down to pick up his daughter. His back let out a small scream in protest, but Jack didn't care. This meant more to him than that.
Cradling his daughter in his arms made his throat clench again, and he could feel his eyes fill with tears. Walking carefully to the bedside, he looked up occasionally to make sure that we wasn't going to trip on anything, but his attention was solely focused on his daughter.
Jackie gently patted the beside next to her, shifting so her husband could sit next to her.
"Hello there, how are you doing?" Jack asked his daughter in a breathless whisper. His daughter opened her eyes, and began to make gurgling noises, her hands flailing softly. Jack let out a soft chuckle. He couldn't tear his gaze away from her.
"Let me hand you off to mom," Jack replied, passing the baby off to his wife, who was smiling, her arms outstretched to hold onto her baby. As Jackie was rocking and cooing gently, Jack took the opportunity to slide off his loafers and sit on the bed next to his wife.
He put his hand behind her head, and pulled her close, gently kissing her forehead, letting his lips linger for a while.
"I love you, and this baby, so much. I'm so sorry, Jackie."
"Shh. Don't worry about that right now." Jack let out a small chuckle.
"Did you come up with a name for her yet?" Jack asked quietly.
"I was thinking of Caroline. Do you like the name Caroline?" Jackie asked.
"It's perfect." He responded, before leaning over his child and placing a small kiss on her tiny forehead.
Caroline giggled softly, while her steel blue eyes locked on her father's, which caused for Jack's heart to skip a beat.
Jack let out a soft chuckle before whispering,
"Oh Caroline. I'm going to give you the world."

CLOSED STARTER. | @storieswrittcn (Allison Hargreeves)
He REALLY fucked up this time around. Not only was he back in the godforsaken sixties, but now he lost his entire FAMILY in it too. What a MAJOR fuck up.
He finally had his family back -- to an extent -- and now as he falls through the portal, being alone feels even heavier than ever. . .Wait a minute. Yeah, ending up here alone sucks, but that’s not exactly what feels heavier. His entire BODY feels heavier and when he staggers to his feet, he realizes he's no longer at a five foot eye level. In fact, he recognizes this height, six-foot-four was it ? It's been a little bit since he wasn't at child’s height. Inspecting himself further he see's he's also out grown and even ripped his old school clothing, leaving him almost scantily clad, but with his shorts remaining, barely. Wonderful. Well, he has no shame in his human body, and at least his hair was still short so he wouldn't have to worry about it being in his face.
Next thing he notes is a massive explosion from behind him, whirling around to witness what appears to be another goddamn apocalypse. Jesus Christ, would they EVER catch a break ? After the ordeal with Hazel and the albino psychos, Five barely managed one more time jump, before he’s landing in the same god forsaken alleyway AGAIN. He staggers to stand this time, the world tilting a little bit and he could feel something drip from his nose; a quick wipe of the fingertips tells him he’s suffering a NOSE BLEED. Wonderful, he suppose he should be thankful he still kept his new adult age intact this time around too; should make for more easier, quick work. He ditches the busted suitcase behind a dumpster and ignores the drying blood on his lip, jumping into the clothing store adjacent from him and ends up tripping into a rack of clothes, falling in a noisy mess of 60′s attire. God DAMN IT. He growls out his frustrations as he strips from the school boy getup, replacing them with a decent combination of a soft, black pullover sweater and grey chino’s with black loafers. He even finds a good enough blazer jacket the color of a deep navy. Eh, what the hell. He see’s that he’s dropped a small package of film and retrieves it, brows furrowed as he reads the info and curses under his breath. One thing at a time.
Next he hears is someone running in front of the shop, prompting him to shove the film box into his inside breast pocket and jog to the shop window to see who had passed. He’s immediately jumping out again with a gasp and strong case of vertigo when he realizes it was Allison running by. He takes a moment, waiting for the dizziness to pass as he keeps an eye on where she enters; it appeared to be a diner. Good, they can meet there and discuss where to go from -- wait, why is she leaving ? Three guys start cat calling at her and begin crossing lines into violent harassment. . .SHIT, it was three WHITE guys. A quick glance around and Five is instantly reminded where -- WHEN, he was, and that made him VERY angry, more so once he see’s Allison start to run after punching out one of the men. He’s quick to follow after, ignoring other white men and women expressing faux concern for his disheveled state. He call’s out to her but figures she can’t hear him. He skips to a halt just at the corner of the street she went down, watching as the women of the salon defend her from the jerkoff’s before they left.
He waits a little longer, steadies his breath, before walking up to the salon. A few people looked at him funny, mostly the men even GLARED at him. Good, he could care less but he supported their points of view and feelings during this time. But he has FAMILY he needs to get to, someone who could ANCHOR him right about now. He knocks on the salon door, offering a tight lipped smile to the woman who glared at him from the window. He watches as she flips the sign to ‘CLOSED’, having to fight the urge to roll his eyes to kingdom come. He speaks loud enough to be heard through the cheap glass; he’s impatient, he doesn’t have the luxury of TIME.
“Please, I need to speak to Allison ! She’s my --” wait, were interracial adoptions even a thing yet ? ! Wait, of course not, dammit. Please forgive him Allison, it’s just easier to explain away.
“She’s my GIRLFRIEND. Please ! We got separated and I’m looking for her -- is she okay, at least ?” he watches as the women look back toward her, and he catches a glimpse of her through the window. His smile feels strange, more GENUINE right at this second than it has been in literal YEARS, jumped or otherwise. He even waves at her, pointing at himself and mouthing ‘FIVE’.

Band AU Outline
Because where else am I going to put this?
[Lol I made it long, it’s under the readmore]
Scene 1 is Jax is trying to get coffee for his shitty boss and this asshole bumps into him, spills it all over him, and has the goddamn nerve to not stick around. Jax doesn’t know how he feels about the $50 bill casually thrown at him before Asshole runs off
Scene 2 is Robb arriving late to after school rehearsal and smelling faintly like coffee and his stupid brother is there and sneers at him because Eric is sooooo perfect and Eric gets to be the one that plays the violin, the instrument that everyone likes, and Robb is here playing the bass. Well fuck you, Eric, because Robb’s a damn good bass player and he actually likes how it sounds, thank you very much. If he’d gotten stuck with the viola he would have killed himself; he’d literally be second fiddle to Eric.
Scene 3 is Jax on his lunch break talking to Ana about their bassist or something I think?
Scene 4 is Robb secretly practicing his electric bass in a quiet part of the mansion, like he always does, playing along with youtube videos and learning whatever he feels like
Scene 5 is Jax arriving at the venue and finally feeling the stress of the day wash off a little
Scene 6 is Robb arriving at the venue; he’s got a genuine ticket, but he brought his electric bass to try and say he’s part of the opening act or something and get backstage to try and get an autograph (maybe got dared to get one?) This goes, of course, wrong when the stage runner insists on personally seeing him to the correct dressing room saying they’ve been looking for their goddamn bassist all over the place, where the fuck have you been? and just shoves him in
Queue: “YOU!” “Me?” Robb studied the other’s face, looking for where he’d know those features from. Suddenly it came to him. Oh. Oh no. Coffee boy. “Oh no,” Rob said, unable to help it, “Me.”
Robb fucking OWES Jax for that bullshit, he may have payed for replacement coffee, but you can’t pay for replacement dignity, and that was his FAVORITE sweater. What’s that instrument he has? A bass? Fucking good because Barger is a no-show and they’re on in 15.
Ana’s drums, Di does keyboard and synth, Jax is lead (only) guitar and lead (only) singer -- Di cannot carry a note to save the galaxy and Ana gets too excited and just ends up screaming more than singing (you physically cannot stop her from doing this, mind you, so mostly Jax just doesn’t give her a mic. It helps only so very much. To be fair, it is Ana’s band, so she has a certain right to do whatever she wants) They are the Dossier [Idk if I wanna include Xu and Elara in here yet; if I do, Elara’s a techie and Xu is additional tech support + Social media manager/marketing/gig booking/etc]
Queue the gang tearing up Robb’s pretty boy outfit to get grungier bc if you believe Ana started some kinda new wave bullshit band full of crooners you’re goddamn wrong. They do loud hard rock and you can die made about it. Also Jax applies Robb’s eyeliner and Robb has never had a more intimate moment with an individual without actually touching one another in his life.
Then there’s the show. Lucky for Robb they’re playing all covers and it’s stuff that he knows. unluckily for Robb, it’s completely different to playing quietly in his tucked away chamber to youtube videos. He makes do, though.
He’s kind of mouthing along to the words he knows and then he’s singing them quietly and then he’s singing them outright and then Jax notices and somehow there’s now been a mic placed in front of him and he’s become backup vocals now and if he believed in fake things he’d think Jax was actually pleased about this. Wow, performing sure makes your heart beat hard.
Then they’re taking a bow and off the stage before he even knows it. He thinks now he’ll be shooed off, but actually they let him watch the actual concert with them and then there’s like an after party and they let him tag along and actually he has a really good time (He gets that autograph he wanted too lol)
Like a week later he gets a call from Ana -- Di had made him sign a goddamn liability waiver including personal and emergency contact info -- and turns out that Barger skipped town for reasons which are genuinely undisclosed but 99% probably because he has a gambling problem. They need a new bassist. He worked out well in a pinch, does he think he can make practices monday at 7?
So that’s how Robb starts sneaking around to be in this band and play little gigs here and there and it isn’t the sort of places anyone from his circle would be involved in and it isn’t so big that he’s so very worried about an internet presence (he does “”Shyly”” hide behind his hand when Di tries to get pictures for their social media). Robb like tells his mom he’s doing some extracurricular thing and turns his phone off and pays off his chauffeur to say nothing
There’s probably some cute scenes or clips of outings or something. They go thrift shopping to get Robb some actual stage clothes, they hang out with Ana’s moms, they don’t talk about Jax’s parents ever and don’t mention that Jax pretty much lives with Ana or the rotating cast of personnel through the house, there’s heart-to-hearts, there’s laughs, there’s drama, there’s friendship blossoming, walls breaking, truly incredible stuff
Then comes the inevitable. The day of the Big School Concert is also the day of the big Battle of The Bands or something. It’s some sort of contest where they play some songs and then they play one they were like assigned and they were assigned Space Oddity and one thing is that the judges are really looking for those strings but Di’s synths just aren’t cutting it; they’re timing and intonation just aren’t right. So Robb is like “Okay, you can’t ask any questions, and I’m going to be like on the wire BUT I will be there and I will bring strings. You have to trust me.”
And then it’s Robb’s concert, and bananas things happen and he gets out of there with the bass and we’re switching back and forth between everyone being antsy and worrying and Robb booking it with this big ass piece of shit on his back and he’s in the back of the car fucking up his $300 suit. Maybe there’s a run-in with Eric? I kinda really want him to show up a little worse for ware for Jax to fuss over.
And Jax and Ana and Di are like Bass??? Suit???? Hair half slicked back??? Are those LOAFERS??? Is that a BLACK EYE?? [one of the judges later asks the same thing and Robb just replies “We are a grunge band, ma’am] But there’s no time to fuss! Because he rolls up literally like two minutes from going on stage!
They rush out and they play their song and it’s magical and fucking gay and Di’s going fucking ham on the piano and the whole room is vibing. Then they play a couple more songs or something idk I don’t want to like ruin this emotional high but I do need to justify the electric base being there for the next bit which issss
Di and Ana shove Robb and Jax into the dressing room and they FINALLY make out. And it’s amazing and heavy and full of emotional and physical catharsis and it’s just exactly what everyone -- robb, jax, the reader -- needs.
And then there’s a knock on the door. Followed by “Robbert, darling, are you in there?”
And Robb’s blood goes cold. Because of course Eric told his mother. Of course he forgot to turn his phone off. Of course, just as he finally has the things he wants, what he’s been craving for all his life, here comes his mother reminding him of what he is supposed to be.
“What’s wrong?” Jax asks, “Who’s that?” But Robb can’t bear to say a word. It’ll all become obvious in a minute anyway. All he can do is hope that the sadness on his face shows, for once he wants his stupid face to show his goddamn emotion to the one person, and that Jax will know that’s how he really feels and won’t take this next part too personally.
His parting words are to hand his electric bass to Jax and say, “Here, can you keep this safe for me? Valerios aren’t supposed to play these sorts of things.”
And before Jax can say anything Robb turns away and makes his face a mask and replies, “Yes, Mother.”
The door opens and there stands his mother, graying hair pulled into an elegant bun, still in the dress from the recital. Eric stands there too with his sharp suit, looking as if their tussle had never happened and like he didn’t need to wash blood off his rings. There were also a couple of men in suits, some of his mother’s assistants. One entered unceremoniously and silently took the bass from the room.
“My dearest, whatever are you here for? I believe we agreed to a dinner at your favorite restaurant for your recital tonight,” it was Eric’s favorite, Robb hated the place, “This event was not on my itinerary.”
“I apologize for the delay, Mother,” Robb said, as if he’d made them wait five minutes instead of running off across town and surely ruining their evening, “I owed a debt, and as you know that cannot be outstanding.”
The barest hint of anger flashed over her face; she absolutely hated when he threw Valerio Family Names items back at her. He must have been hanging around with Ana too much, because he found himself relishing in having made her mad. The flash was gone almost before it was there, though, and her face was cool once more.
“And what, pray tell, did you owe to these... people,” his mother said, eyeing Jax in a way that made Robb so angry he could feel the white hot rage in the center of his chest. But he was a Valerio, and he knew better than to show it like Ana was allowed to.
“Did you not catch the show, Mother?” Robb asked, protectively stepping between her gaze and Jax and praying that it didn’t show his cards too thoroughly, “They required some strings accompaniment. I lent them some. Our transaction is done, I have no more business here.”
He had so much more business here. He had results to hear. An after party to go to. Pizza to eat. Jokes to laugh at. A boy to kiss.
But now all that business is done for. Who wants to hear results for a song played by a liar? Who wants to go to an after party or eat pizza or tell jokes with a Valerio? Who would want to kiss him after seeing who he really is: a spineless wimp who is doomed to live and die by his mother’s whims. This whole arrangement was doomed from the start, and he always knew it. He was just too happy to let himself know that.
His mother was clearly displeased with him, but what was new? “So I see,” She said at last, “Well then, come along, no need to tarry in this... venue.”
“Of course, Mother,” Robb said. A cool nothingness washed over him. He knew his lines. He knew his place. This was who he was.
Robb left the room, not sparing Jax a single look over his shoulder. He told himself it was because his mother would certainly notice, and she would, but really he couldn’t bear to see whatever expression Jax was wearing -- betrayal, shock, anger? It would only break his heart further.
As he left the room he now saw that Di and Ana were looking on in shock. Apparently they hadn’t stepped too far away. “Hey!” Ana yelled, “What’s going on?”
“Did you not hear the entire conversation about what’s ‘going on’?” Erik asked, and Robb wanted to punch him again. Apparently Ana wanted to too, because Di instinctively reached to hold her back just as she began forward.
“And who is this, Robbert?” his mother asked, as if they were at the zoo and she was asking which animal was in this enclosure. It was so hard for Robb to see Ana riled up without getting riled up too.
“The leader of the band, Mother,” Robb said, carefully not naming her. She was nondescript, hard to track down by description alone. Hopefully more trouble than his mother thought worth it. He never wanted any of this night to come back to hurt the band.
“Well, as you’ve heard, his debt is payed, so he is leaving. Say goodbye, Robbert.”
“Goodbye,” Robb said, feeling like a dog, “Thank you for the experience.” That was as close as he could get to what he wanted to say. Thank you for being his friend, for being there for him, for letting him be dumb and clumsy, for a thousand things Ana has done for him. Her and Di and Jax. And all he can say is, “Thank you for the experience.” He makes him sick.
And like that he turns with his mother and brother, because he is nothing but their dog. A spare for if something goes wrong. An extra to be married off for a good business deal once he’s ripe. That’s all he is and all he will ever be.
He can hear Ana yelling after them, struggling against Di’s hold. He can picture Di’s face as he struggles between holding Ana back for her own good and letting her go because he knows she’ll at least land a hit. He tries not to picture Jax at all.
But don’t worry because I hate sad endings but idk exactly what I want to happen but basically a few hours pass and then either Siege or Ana is like “So, when are we going?” and Jax is like “? Going where?” “To break your boyfriend out.” and idk, but it works out in the end.
